How I Fell In Love With A Pony
Confessing to Royalty (AKA My Nerves Are Shot...Again)
Previous ChapterNext ChapterThe moment was perfect. She and I were seated there on the rooftop of her beloved School of Friendship. Every inch of Equestria seemed a million miles away, and it was as if we were floating on thin air. The night was beautiful, and the shimmering beams of the moon cast their spell over the entire scene. The flowers seemed to pour forth more of their sweet fragrances than ever before, and Fluttershy’s bird chorus set the stage beautifully. We had eaten most of the delicious treats Pinkie had made, and the thermoses of cider were half empty.
Her eyes dazzled in the moonlight. They reflected the stars themselves, and I swore that some deity had created her just for me. Her beauty radiated around the roof, but it never seemed to escape anywhere else. Her lithe body was lovely to view silhouetted against the backdrop of the thousands of twinkling lights in the sky. Her mane seemed to flow even smoother than it once had, and her smile was breathtaking in the nightly atmosphere.
“It’s such a beautiful night,” she remarked, “only…I didn’t raise the moon. Who did?” When she asked this, her eye gleamed because she already knew the answer. She was simply looking for an explanation.
I chuckled. “Well, I got Princess Luna to help with that. She retained a small trace of her power after retiring and, though it took her a bit to do so, she managed to get it up there.”
“Stony, I want to thank you for this evening,” Twilight said, “this surprise nighttime picnic was just what I needed. Everything tonight has been wonderful, from the things Pinkie made to the cider from Sweet Apple Acres. But…you’ve never done anything like this before. Why now?”
I realized that the time had come. I tried to gather my thoughts and create some resemblance of coherence, but it was difficult to do so. With the most beautiful creature in the world staring back, I’m fairly sure even the world’s greatest orators would have issues creating sentences. I sighed and calmed my nerves a bit. Rarity’s advice popped up in my head. Your heart will tell you what to say…
“Twilight,” I said, “we’ve been friends for quite some time now. Everything we’ve ever done, we’ve done together. I can’t imagine being without you. I know nothing I can say could ever convey just how special you are to me. You…well…you light up my life. Every single day, I wake up and hope that just once, I get to be with you. Your kindness and compassion for everypony has enraptured me, and the way you rule with justice and integrity warms my heart. As someone who comes from a world where things like that are often in short supply, I can say with full knowledge that the importance of those things in a ruler are quite often underestimated.”
“I heartily agree,” Twilight said, smiling, “and I think I know where you’re going with this. But all the same…what are you getting at?”
I shivered a bit. Her eyes seemed to glow with happiness and love, and I melted at the sight. My heart was not only running a marathon, it was now the equivalent of comic book icon The Flash. I felt as if it would beat so hard that it would tumble out of my chest cavity and land at Twilight’s hooves. “I…I…” I stammered, “I love you, Twilight. I’ve loved you for a long time now. There’s just something about you and about our friendship that makes me feel happy and joyful. I’ve never been able to feel that with a girl back in my world, but with you…it’s happening. I’ve never been this close to a girl before. I know I may not be the most handsome stallion in Equestria, but my love for you is real, and it’s not going anywhere.”
I swore I saw her eyes moisten. Her lip quivered and ended up right back in a smile. She swallowed and bent down to nuzzle my head. I gladly returned the gesture, and my heart leapt for joy. She’s gonna do it! I thought, she’s gonna reciprocate my feelings! Finally! Finally, it’s happening! This must be what every other guy in the world feels like! I’m just so…elated!
After a good minute of nuzzling, she bent back up and softened her look even more. “Do you remember our first outing?” She asked.
“At The Pizza Pony?”
“Yes,” she said, “and if you recall, I told you a pony was beginning to steal my heart. That pony…was you, Stony Tail. I’ve never met somepony I’ve fought with or been friends with…or loved as much as you. Our companionship is strong, and our friendship has bent but never broken. At first, I didn’t wanna believe it. I thought it was some crazy idea. But then you kept proving to me that you did love and care about me. Every time we fought, you were always humble when we came back and apologized to each other. Every time we were apart, you were always bound and determined to return to me. As far as looks are concerned, you’ve grown more handsome in my eyes every single day. Stony, I love you too, and I promise I always will.”
She bent back down, but this time it was our lips that did the meeting. Her kiss was soft and gentle, just as she was, and I reveled in the feeling. Electricity shot up and down my spine as the gesture continued, and I found myself sitting on my haunches and wrapping my forelegs around her. She did the same to me, and we sat in each other’s embrace for a few moments more. When we finally broke for air, her smile was happier than it ever had been, and I saw tears in her eyes.
“I…I’ve never felt this before,” she confessed.
“Me neither,” I said, “but I love it.”
“Promise me something,” she said.
“What’s that, my love?”
“Promise me that, no matter where you go, I’ll always be in your heart.”
“I promise, Twilight,” I said as I gave her a quick peck on the cheek and nuzzled her head, “I promise…”
