I realized that our cries of love and pleasure had been intensely loud, and had woken the foal. I set Diamond down. “Baby girl,” I said, “I-“
But she didn’t let me finish. She ran over and hopped up onto the bed, cuddling in next to her mother. Twilight wrapped a comforting wing around her, and she nuzzled her. I trotted back over and got into bed next to them and both of us began comforting the small foal. “Diamond, sweetheart,” Twilight cooed, “there’s nothing to be worried about.”
“You two were screaming at each other! I thought you were in trouble!”
She suddenly sat straight up and looked around the room. “Where are they?!”
“Where are who, darling?” I asked.
“Where are the bad ponies?! I’ll teach them to mess with my Mommy and Daddy!”
Twilight and I had to work really hard to stifle our giggles. The way Diamond was bravely “protecting” us from malicious malefactors that didn’t exist was extremely adorable. Her defiant squeak was filled to the brim with her love for us, and she truly felt as if she was defending us from vicious marauders. I quietly sat up and gathered her into an embrace, pulling her back down into the warmth between us.
“Sweetheart,” I told her, “there are no bad ponies.”
“No bad ponies?” She asked in disbelief. Then her small, yet brilliant mind went to work, and she looked at us both incredulously. “You two were fighting!” She suddenly cried, “you don’t love each other anymore!”
As soon as we saw the tears, we went into parental overdrive. We had to reassure her that we, in fact, did still love each other and weren’t fighting. It was rather difficult to console the crying magic kindergartner, but in the end, our soothing words won the day and she ceased her weeping. “So…you do still love each other?”
“Of course we do, darling!” Twilight said happily, “and we love you, too!”
“So…then…why were you screaming like that?”
We knew Diamond was WAY too young for “the talk,” but we didn’t want to be dishonest with her. I knew how important the Element of Honesty was to Twilight, and we both knew that if we killed the trust of this, the very youngest among us, we might never reacquire it. So Twilight sighed. “Sweetie, you’re gonna have to trust us on this one,” she said lovingly, “you’re still too young to understand why, but believe me when I tell you that everything you heard was…love.”
“How can it be love?” Diamond questioned, “it sounded as if you two hated each other.”
“You’re just gonna have to trust Mommy and I,” I told her, “we still love each other, we still love you, and that’s all there is to it. Someday, when you’re older, we’ll tell you the details. But right now, you just wouldn’t understand.”
“I would! I would!” Our inquisitive little filly squeaked cutely, “I understand lots of things! Ms. Neighly said I’m really smart!”
We both smiled at each other and at her. “I’m sure your teacher was right,” Twilight said, “but even smart little fillies your age are too young to be told what your father and I were doing. It was special and private, and that’s the way it needs to stay. You just need to know that we love each other and you and we always will.”
Diamond pouted a bit. “I wanna know!” She said, “I bet Barrel Stripes gets to know!”
“Barrel Stripes? Your friend?”
“Yeah!” Diamond said, “her parents tell her EVERYTHING.”
“Well, Barrel’s parents can raise Barrel however they see fit,” I said, “but we’re raising you the way we see fit. We want what’s best for you, darling, and sometimes that means keeping some things secret until you're old enough to fully understand just how special they are.”
“But I WANNA KNOOOOOOOW!”
“Now, Diamond, that’s enough!” I said sharply, “we’re not gonna have this complaining.”
She knew, by my tone of voice, that I meant what I said and that she was pushing the envelope too far. So she acquiesced, but I could tell she was disappointed. “Yes, daddy,” she said, “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, my little one,” I said, “now, then, would you feel better if you slept with Mommy and I tonight?”
She nodded her small head and nuzzled into Twilight’s coat. Her mother smiled down and gently rubbed her mane with a hoof. “Go on to sleep, my little Diamond,” she soothed, “and know that your father and I’s love for you will never, ever end. You don’t need to ever doubt that again, darling.” With that, I wrapped a wing around both my precious filly and my precious mare, and we all fell into a very satisfying slumber.
