In the dimly lit hallways of Canterlot Castle, a couple walked side by side down the rug covered path towards a door. This, however, was not a usual couple. This pair were a secret-at least, that’s what they wanted to be...for now. Aten shrugged his shoulders, the plates on his armor rubbing against each other. "I have other duties besides attending to you and your sister, your Highness. Your mother enjoys keeping me busy."
Evening huffed, letting go of his hands to cross her arms over her chest and pout dramatically. "Taking more of my time to spend with you, now is she? Well I'm glad she's focused on making sure all of the guests that crash here tonight don't get nightmares in their drunken stupors. Why does Aunt Tia allow them to drink so much, anyways?"
The hybrid gave her a look. "It's a party, of course there's going to be enough drinks to supply a small army. And perhaps it's also to deter any uprisings. It's hard to fight against a ruler who gives you all the sweet bubbly you can force down your throat, hmm?"
Well, it made sense. "I guess."
Aten sighed while he looked her over, taking note of the sequin covered gold dress-which matched her curious eyes- that adorned her frame and trailed behind her on the floor. "It's a shame that such a beautiful dress had to go to waste on a night like tonight. No one is going to see it."
"But someone is seeing it," Eve protested. "You."
The guard attempted to conceal his surprised blush, but failed, hints of green dusting his black, scaly skin. “Well, when you put it that way...you look gorgeous, Evening.”
She beamed, grabbing his hands again and pulling him towards her. “Thank you. Now hurry up! The firework show is about to start!”
Aten sighed and shook his head, but quickened his steps as the mare more or less dragged him down the rest of the hallway, helping her push the door open to one of the castle’s many balconies. “Fireworks? With your sensitive ears? You’d think you’d be hiding underneath the castle with all those explosions.”
Evening stuck her tongue out at him before turning to face the starry sky. “I can handle fireworks, you winged dog. It’s sudden noises that bother me.” Right on cue, a firework erupted into a scattering ball of color and light, unintentionally startling the princess and sending her subconsciously barreling into her guard’s arms, to which he simply held her until her pinprick sized pupils and on end fur settled down. “S-see what I mean?”
He chuckled before twirling her around so her back was to his front, gently resting his palms on her shoulders. "I can see that. Don't worry, your Highness. I'll protect you from the big, bad, scary fireworks." Smirking as he watched her already rosy cheeks go full on red while a fuming frown pulled at her lips, he plopped his chin on the top of her curled grey and blue mane, long tail starting to wag. "You know, for having so many perches set up all around the grounds, you make for a pretty good one yourself."
The princess sputtered, at a loss for what to say, having to settle for an annoyed grumble. The two soon fell silent, watching each firework that was launched shed its florescent light over everything below it for a second or two before fizzling out into a small cloud of smoke. “It’s pretty,” she finally murmured.
Aten agreed with a hum. “It’s mediocre. This is no match for the show on the Fourth of July. The castle walls shake with those fireworks.”
Evening grimaced. “All the more reason why I stay inside my tower for that one.” There was a pause, and then her ears perked. “Come to think of it, you’ve never been to my tower, have you?”
“I believe not. Why do you ask?”
A bright smile burst onto the mare’s face, almost teetering into an overly excited sort of grin. “No reason… let’s go!”
The sound of wings flapping filled the otherwise still and quiet air as the two gracefully landed on the small balcony outside of Evening’s bedroom. Well, Aten landed gracefully. Evening herself nearly crashed into the structure, having to grab onto the banister to keep herself steady. Her guard snorted.
“I’m surprised you still haven’t gotten the hang of landing down yet. How long has it been, ten years?”
The princess wasn’t amused. “Hey! You try spending more than half of the day hanging upside down and all of the blood rushes down to your head! You’d feel disoriented sometimes too.”
“I’m kidding with you, Eve.”
She huffed, shaking her head. “I don’t know what to do with you anymore.”
Aten chuckled. “Well you’d be doing a lot of things without me, so there’s that. ...So, what did you want to show me?”
“Oh, right!” She moved past him to open the large glass bay doors that led to the dark room. Spinning around to face him, her wings spread open in a graceful flourish. “Ta da! Welcome to my humble abode!”
The space was dark-as expected- yet also relatively small, at least when compared to the many guest rooms in the castle halls. A golden colored bar with chains hung from the ceiling to serve as a perch, just over the batpony’s moonlight bathed star themed bed. Besides that, not much else filled the area besides the princess essentials: a vanity, wardrobe and full sized mirror that stood off in the corner. Oh, and pillows. Aten hummed, glancing around before letting his gaze rest on her. “It’s… nice. I have two questions though.”
Her eyes lit up. “Shoot!”
“One, where do you go to the restroom? I don’t see any stairs or other doors anywhere.” His face began to pale when she pointed behind him, back to where they came from. The look in his eyes was serious. “Why am I here?”

A hum rumbled in his throat as he rose back to his full height, giving her an expression that was hard to decipher. Finally a clicking sound reached her ears, looking down to find that he was untying the straps that held his attire snug to his body, silvery chestplate and pauldrons that covered his shoulders falling to the floor with a clank. The fur on her neck stood up in shock. “Ten, what are you-”
“I’d like to play a little game with you, your Highness. I’ll tell you to do some things, and you’ll follow them. Kind of like Simon Says. Sound fair?”
Evening wasn’t sure what to make of that. “What if I mess up?”
Aten smiled, working on removing the boots that encapsulated his hooves. “You won’t, don’t worry. I’ll make sure of it. What do you say? Shall we get started?”
