1000 years ago, Celestia had to turn the elements of harmony upon her greatest friend, her sister. Though Nightmare Moon's evil was banished, the combined magic transformed Equestria and all its inhabinets, and none but Celestia was left to remember the ponies she had loved. With the help of her prize student Twilight Sparkle, Celestia must recover the elements and set things right.
