There was none to be found; she truly meant it, hers was the laughter of a mare brimming with satisfaction, sincerity and love. He understood for the first time that afternoon what sheâd meant before about her good mood, the sweetness sheâd been feeling prior to a certain dragon, namely himself, interrupting the spell somewhat, and he felt his chest swell as every bit of it came into him entirely.
He stopped and posed, putting a claw behind his head as he stood up straight. âDo you really think, Rare? Feels good to wear, at least. He planted his foot back on the floor before making a full rotation, however, looking in danger of toppling over, and Rarity inhaled sharply as it looked like he might.

He covered his mouth with a claw as he apologised, âSorry. Uh, absolutely! I was wondering when youâd ask, actually. Usually you get dressed up in something yourself, or grab the gramophone for a piece to dance to.â
On that last point, Rarityâs eyes lit up. âOoh, idea!â she trilled, âI was listening to our song just before you returned, as a matter of fact! Two ticks while I bring it through!â Then she trotted out into the hallway, across to the dining room for a moment, before returning with a purple vinyl disc levitating in front of her.
He smiled as he focussed on the discâs midsection. âBeyond Divine , huh?â he smiled, putting his claws on Rarityâs shoulders, âAw, Rare⊠you werenât joking when you said you were thinking about me while you made this.â He chuckled as Rarity returned his grasp, putting her hands on his muscular biceps and standing on her hind legs as she attempted to pop the record onto the rose-gold bedroom gramophone. She was so preoccupied with giving Spike her tight embrace that she had to stop for a moment to concentrate to centre the disc and place the needle onto its groove. Then she turned back to him, Spikeâs forehead resting on hers.
The two of them closed their eyes and cuddled for a moment as they paced back and forth to the songâs piano introduction, and Rarity looked up at him. âThis song marks occasions for us, darling,â she said, âAlthough thereâs merely a lovely day to celebrate⊠this is magical, donât you agree? A Brave and Glorious Afternoon, Pt.1
Rarity beavered away industriously at the dining room sewing desk, her silver-streaked mane elaborately tied up and her detail spectacles perched on her muzzle as she basked in the clear afternoon light streaming through the flowing gossamer-silk curtains, hanging off the balcony doors sheâd left open to let in the southerly warm winds. It was another beautiful blue sunny day in the Crystal Empire with barely a cloud in the sky, though it was only slightly warmer than normal.
From her vantage point in the penthouse she could see an eyeful of it for miles around to the point where sheâd considered moving the desk outside so sheâd not need to move to drink in its panorama. Sheâd second-guessed the idea when the mesh material she was working with had threatened to waft away in the breeze; where she was sitting now sheltered her work while keeping her regulated, and between that and the romantic glam rock ballad lilting softly on the gramophone she felt utterly at peace as she stitched away on her project.
Life and work were good at Crystal Beautification. While today sheâd taken a half-day, Rarity had been occupied with a round-stable just that morning with both Ms. Pommel and two representatives on behalf of the eastern fruitpunk fashionista Kimono, to discuss and confirm the logistics of overseas transaction via airship between Manehattan and the farflung city of Hinba, the bustling Equestrian outpost located across the Celestial Sea on an island off the coasts between the Dragonlands and the Kirin Grove. Her good friend, the Pillar of Old Equestria Mistmane, hailed from there in ancient times, though it had developed far, mostly vertically, since then.
Their meeting had gone quite well, cementing a deal which had potential ramifications for a touch or three of cross-pollination between the two disparate cities, something that had never hurt fashion before. Expansion beyond Equestriaâs borders was slowly but definitely taking form, and while this was for trade with ponies living away from the mainland specifically her fashions for other races around Une were taking off quite nicely besides. It was an important point of pride for Rarity that she was no one-trick pony, able to adapt and cater for all creatures great and small, and just as much to give other, rising talents a boost whenever possible.
To that former point, following the meeting, just a couple of hours ago sheâd measured up two touring yak females with shawl and anklet combinations theyâd absolutely adored, and yaks could be difficult to please; the secret of a successful transaction, sheâd learned from her good friends Pinkie Pie, an honorary yak and Equestriaâs first point of contact with their prince; and Yona, her former apprentice and successor at the Carousel Boutique back in Ponyville; was simply to be yourself and keep the cultural appropriation to a minimum.
After all, if yaks wanted yak gear theyâd procure it in Yakyakistan, where the product would without fail be considered highly superior to any pony-manufactured imitations. Rarity knew the key was to offer them something theyâd never find at home and see if they appreciated the rare wares, and on this occasion, a fusion of polished ceramics, amethysts and velvetine ruffles interfolded with a fine silken mesh had done the trick. They paid well for the service on top of the fashion itself, although the payments were often accompanied with a tip, a sloppy bucketful of⊠vegetation⊠she hadnât much use for it, although Mistmane herself always appreciated nutrition for her gardens.
As for the latter, tomorrow she intended to make a return via railroad to Hope Hollow to check in with, among the other friendly faces there, Kerfuffle; her once-imitator, now turned up-and-coming hipster-woollens shopkeeper of no modest success. Theyâd planned a friendly drop-in ahead of the seasons turning back towards winter to catch up and plan a spot of logistical co-ordination â having some of her dazzling and unique, yet hoofmade and cosy designs on hoof in her own boutique always pulled in the punters as well as spreading the good word of Kerfuffleâs not-inconsiderable talents further than the fairly remote village from which she hailed, but such things required forethought. Sheâd been wearing the violet bandana the shaggy-yet-chic pegasus had given her the first time theyâd met before the Rainbow Festival there all day, and it definitely would factor into her outfit ahead of their pow-wow.
On top of all that the upcoming midsummer Crystalline Ciderfest meant that for her boutique and spa business was booming, very reasonable prices for what they offered, meaning creatures from far and wide made a point of dropping by if they needed some respite from the oft-bleak weather just outside of the Empireâs borders, though that hadnât been exceptionally inclement of late. Crystal Beautification was, after all, the centre of her fashion empire, an attraction to the place almost as much as the palace that towered high enough that she could see it to the north without standing from her desk.
While she, the ultimate brains of the outfit, busied herself like this the floors below her home were a buzzing hive of activity, full of ponies and other creatures passionate for fashion and beauty giving it their all, and be they customer or staff they all went home handsomely rewarded one way or the other. If her input were needed everycreature working in the building had a direct line to her, but her ponies were competent enough that she could afford to be hooves-off once in a while and concentrate on the more important things in life, like the beautiful dress before her. As busy as she often was, if she didnât take the fleeting moments for personal projects like this when she could sheâd never finish anything on her own terms, after all.
While life could be exhausting on occasion, she loved what she did without end⊠all told, things were going very well for Rarity nowadays, and her ongoing pursuits brought happiness and fashion to anycreature who wanted them! As she stitched the last hem onto her work she took a moment to rest her hooves and sighed, then leaned back in her chair before starting to sing along to the song, Beyond Divine by Splendid Cut and the Pearlescents â their song, actually, as it was one she and her husband Spike had spent many romantic moments together during â as it reached a heartfelt crescendo. She became so overwhelmed by its feeling that she picked up the dress, white, covered in ribbons and blue sequins and a fine floral mesh around the shoulders. She reared onto her hind legs and clasped it to her chest, singing and dancing with delight as it trailed in front of her a bit.
âThese nights will never end with you, and the way you hold me close is just beyond divine ,â she crooned as a virtuoso guitar solo washed over her, of course knowing the lyrics by heart, âAnd Iâm on an adventure with you, going where nopony goes⊠forever, and ever, with yooooou⊠ooh ooh, ooh ooh, yeah, yeah yeah! â It was such a corny song, but one that brought back so many happy memories and one she felt deep inside her heart⊠with a breathless laugh and an overenthusiastic spin on one back leg her tail bumped against the dark oak dining table, and she squeaked as she almost fell onto it, her glasses becoming crooked on impact. She let herself lean back onto the table, and she lay on it with the dress atop her, listening to the song come to its close as she sighed happily. She looked through the balcony door and felt the warmth of the sun and the wind against her fur. Life was good. Wonderful, trulyâŠ
She snuggled the dress against herself for a moment with a contented squeal and a wriggle, then opened her eyes and looked at the crystalline vaults supporting the ceiling, which had become out of focus from her displaced eyeglasses. âOh, dear, I fear I got a tad swept away just then,â she breathed as she adjusted them, then giggled as pink spots appeared on her cheeks, âI really oughtnât to drag a long dress around in circles like a giddy schoolfilly, but itâs such a magical afternoon I can't help my own joie de vivre! â
Rarity hopped back onto her hooves and placed the dress on a hanger, giving its pure, sheer folded fabric an inspection, nodding with quiet satisfaction before addressing it and prancing on the spot for a moment. âAh, youâre perfect⊠anyponâ I should say, anycreature lucky enough to wear you is sure to be the belle of any ball⊠or perhaps I should say, beau âŠâ
She paused for a second, silently glancing back towards the balcony, not-so-subtly hoping the timing was right for the âbeauâ in question to fly in. He didnât, but the clock in the parlour in the bedroom across the hallway chimed the first few bars of the Crystal Empireâs anthem in his stead before dinging four times. Spike would be home soon, at any rate â when he wasnât away on diplomatic matters nor needed by Princess Twilight, not wanting to twiddle his claws at home for extended periods he had, once in a while, taken to assisting with Crystal Guard duties.
Today had been a day heâd patrolled with a group, led by his stepbrother Shining Armor no less, hewing close to a forest just out of the Crystal Heartâs radius of effect. Rarity grinned slyly to herself in anticipation; it was a feature, not a misstep, that the dress sheâd made was fit for a dragon, and after marching around in royal armour all day she fully intended to persuade him into every inch of its figure-hugging, feminine fit. All in the pursuit of fashion, of course! After all, prototypical dragon fashions such as this needed their models, and darling Spikey was closest to hoofâŠ
Satisfied that the dress was fit for purpose, Rarity wrapped herself in her favourite coat, a sparkling royal blue one with a big collar and minkish blue-silver fur inside, and turned back towards the balcony, stepping through the flowing curtains into the sunlight. She smiled as she leaned against the railing and crossed her arms, nude but for her bandana and coat, drinking in the gorgeous view, every bit of the so-called Empire â a city-state, truthfully, regardless of its prosperity, a former mining town made good long ago â visible and gleaming in front of her.
In between the shining rooftops of the citadelâs pointed, crystalline homes and businesses the snowflake layout of the roads slicing the city into its separate districts was plain to see from this far up and the wide marble plaza slap-bang in its centre containing the palace, a huge, gleaming ivory structure of arches and spires whose central tower stretched far, far up into the firmament. Princess Mi Amore Cadenza, her dear royal sister-in-law, kept order as ruler of the realm from its highest tower, and the eternally-spinning Crystal Heart that kept the hostile outside wastes at bay was housed within the arches at its base. Far beyond that, beyond the city limits the icy peaks of Mount Everhoof and the Yaket Range dwarfed even the tip of that â their barren vastness looming beyond the palaceâs grandeur a monument to ungulatesâ hubris, she often thought to herself sardonically.
Every bit of greenery around the city as far as her eye could see was liberally dotted with the primary colours of summer blooms, white ones in addition, and the streets were bustling with crystal ponies and other creatures â she could clearly see a changeling here, a few yaks there, a family of hippogriffs over there besides â doing their doings. While today wasnât market day, the cityâs market one of its primary attractions to passersby, much was being made of this perfect summerâs day by the frolicking, happy denizens of the citadel. It almost made her a little sad to realise sheâd spent most of the day so far breaking bread or sewing inside her boutique, but obligations were obligations.
It was so beautiful from up here, a truly breathtaking view from vista to vista, but before long her attention drew back to the castle and she peered closely through her spectacles and pursed her lips as she leaned against the curved floral railing of the balcony that encircled the entire perimeter of the penthouse. Spike⊠where was that dragon, she pondered? He should be flying back here at any moment, surely? The dress sheâd crafted so lovingly wasnât going to wear itself!
A âping!â sounded behind Rarity that she recognised immediately as the elevator leading from the ground floor of the boutique to her home. Only two creatures could access that, herself and one other, and she spun around just in time to see her husband, the great big purple dragon she loved so dearly, wearing the platinum armour of the Crystal Guard standing in the tiled-floor hallway. âOh, there you are, Spikey-Wikey! I was watching the skies for you!â she chirped, trotting back inside, âHow was your day on patrol, precious?â
Spikeâs posture was slumped, his plumed helmet already removed, and with a âclankâ he shifted in his metal getup as Rarity approached him. She reared onto her hind legs to greet him home with a smooch on the cheek, a very furry hug and a snuggle into one ear frill, which he reciprocated less full-throatedly than usual, putting a claw around her shoulder. âHey, Rarity. Shouldnât you be working?â
âThe morning was simply packed, but Iâve been fortunate enough to have the privilege of taking a half-day today,â she smiled, pulling away from her embrace, âSo I hunkered down up here to finish a little project⊠I just finished five minutes ago, actually! Iâll show you⊠but, how was your day, darling?â she pressed. Spike usually answered her questions.
âIt was alright, I guess. So, allâs well in the world of glitz and glamour?â
âExceptionally so, thanks so much for asking, making deals and getting paid⊠my little fashion empire grows bit by bit, day by day. But enough about moi ⊠why didnât you fly back through the balcony as you normally do? Is something wrong?â She gave Spike a serious look through her glasses, pouting a bit, âSomething is wrong, isnât it. Whateverâs wrong, sweetheart?â
Spike looked down at Rarity with bared fangs and an annoyed snort as she stood back on all fours and gave him a probing glance. âWhatâs wrong right now is that somepony is grilling me about my day â which like I said, was alright â the second Iâm finally home, when I just want to get out of this dumb armour and relax, Rare,â he said, raising his claws, âWould you mind butting out for one second, please! We can talk later, maybe. Iâm tired.â
Without another word he pushed past her and dragged his tail into their bedroom to undress, and Rarity inhaled sharply, faintly indignant at his rudeness, not to mention spoiling her mood. She considered for a second following him through to give him a jolly good telling-off, before stopping herself â after all, he wasnât incorrect, she supposed. If he needed some time to recover from his day, the two of them could discuss it with more level heads a little later.
âWell! If youâre going to sulk about whatever it is youâre sulking about, donât let your own wife stop you!â she called after him, not resisting the temptation to stick a barb to him for he had hurt her feelings slightly, âIâll just be on the balcony in the meantime, enjoying this glorious sunshine until youâre dragon enough to use your words like a civilised creature! Hmph!â
He didnât respond, so she did just that, returning to the view sheâd been drinking in before Spike had returned. It didnât seem quite as bright and happy to her as it had, though. She stepped away from the railing and pulled her coat around her as she felt a colder breeze than before almost blow her precisely-arranged mane out of position, then lay on her side on a foldable chair, sighing.
Spikeâs withdrawn countenance was most unusual, she thought, quite unlike his usual triumphant returns via dragonflight to sweep her off her hooves and give her a passionate, fiery kiss. More likely than not something had perturbed him, but what? She started to fuss, despite telling herself how unproductive it was to dwell upon conjecture â perhaps his troop had encountered some wild beast, or a threat to the Empire en route? What if one of his fellows had been hurt, or injured in combat? Could it be a political issue, or something that might require the Elements of Harmony, herself included in that number of course, to unite? What if they couldnât handle it? What ifâ
She gasped, the dark cloud upon her dissipating as a warm purple claw found its way into her coat, planting itself onto her bare shoulder. She squeaked with surprise, then turned her head upwards and saw Spike standing above and behind her, looking contrite and without his armour. âHey, Rarity. I love you,â he said, âIâm sorry I was a bum to you just then. Itâs just⊠ehâŠâ
Rarity looked Spike dead in the eyes, still fretting. âNocreature was hurt on your patrol, were they? You should tell me if something happenedâŠâ
He sat down next to her, his huge claws resting on his swirly knees as he vented a bit. âNo, nothing happened, Rare. Shining Armor kicked all our tails, regardless, worked us hard and was kinda rude about it⊠you know, I donât have to go on patrol, I just go along sometimes when Iâm not busy doing royal stuff to spend time with him and the other roughneck guards. I think having Cadanceâs second kid well on the way is stressing him out, but he didnât have to take it out on us.â
Rarity relaxed, looking into Spikeâs eyes with relief, although he returned it with slightly sad eyes. She noticed, and caressed his cheek. âAw, darling⊠Iâve been caught up enough in Cadance and Twilightâs meticulous plans to make certain thereâs no chance of a repeat of what happened after Flurry Heart was born back in the day, not that youâd know sheâs expecting to look at her. I donât know how she does it, it was the same with Flurry to hear Twilight tell it, and she is a thin mare to begin withâŠâ
He thought on it for a moment, his green eyes looking up at the few clouds in the sky. âIt is strange approaching her last quarter, isnât it? I wouldnât have guessed if they hadnât told us directly back during Hearthâs Warming. Maybe itâs an alicorn magic thing, but thatâs not really our business,â he ended with a laugh.
Rarity returned his laugh with a hoof raised to her mouth. âQuite. Nevertheless, I feel confident that he neednât be overly on edge, our princesses have everything planned out, and he has a far better idea of the joys of fatherhood this time. Besides, a peaceful patrol is good, is it not? Thereâs simply no call for being so dratted crabby on such a gorgeous, peaceful day on either of your behalves, though I understand if you were put out. I forgive you, precious. Come here.â
Then she reached over and kissed him. She only meant for another peck on the cheek, but Spike took her, both claws rubbing her shoulders and pulling her atop his body. She just about had chance to cry, âSpikeyâ mmmph!!â before he popped off her glasses, and they clattered to the tiled balcony floor as he gave her a big bear hug and an explosive, passionate mashing together of their lips, before pulling away and looking at her with an almost-painful sweetness. âThe dayâs all the more gorgeous now Iâm with you, Rare. Itâs great to be home. Iâm sorry again, my love.â
Rarity inhaled and closed her eyes, her horn rubbing against Spikeâs forehead a little as she leaned back into him, showing her sincerity when she said all was forgiven. She spread her arms so her fur coat enshrouded the two of them as she ran her hooves over his chest, kneading him softly as she kissed back twice as deep, her comparatively short equine tongue pressing down against his forked salamander. Spikeâs claws slid over her sides to her waist, and she broke off the kiss with a gasp and a short moan as he squeezed her hips, just above the cutie marks on her flanks. He gave her a lingering smooch between her jaw and right ear, then reared back to look her in the face. âItâs alright, Spikey-Wikey. I love you, truly I do,â she cooed.
She breathed more heavily, slowly turning light pink in response to his touch. âWell, never mind all that. Iâve no more duties for today unless thereâs an emergency, Rarity⊠we should go out later, what do you say?â he asked.
âHahh⊠Spike, you get me in the mood just like that and then your mind flits elsewhere, and so soon after your hotheadedness! Darling, perhaps, I will need to check up on the boutique before close but after that, well,â she pulled back from her husbandâs big arms and pontificated, âThere is a little place down the western branch I visited with Pinkie while she was passing through to Yakyakistan last week that serves absolutely fabulous seafood, and I was thinking about us both going there. Would that sound good to you⊠ooh, Spike...â
Spike chuckled, one ear reaching up and sliding across Rarityâs mane as she thought about dinner, behind her ear, which flicked twice as he gave it a caress. âIf they serve lobster, we can share that, Rare⊠you know, they say thatâs an aphrodisiac!â
