It wasn't the air raid siren that woke him up.

If an answer was given, no one heard it as the AA guns blared to life and fought back against the aerial menace.
No one needed to hear an answer; everyone knew deep down inside what was going on: The Germans were attacking.
"Schnell, schnell!" he heard his captain call.
He ordered his squad forward and over the mounds surrounding the American training camp so that the water would be retained when it rained to make life harder for the recruits.
The bombing run had just ended, and it was time for phase two of the attack.
