The Tale of the Nightmareby Whispering SubtextChaptersFirst MeetingA Growing FriendshipFight for the EverfreeBetrayalThe Bitterness in Her HeartA Nightmarish CurseRaising the PrincessFirst MeetingThe Everfree Forest was populated with various creatures, from small to large. While the forest inspired the curiosity of some ponies, others desired to steal a treasure from the Everfree Forest. Centuries ago, a war divided Equestria and the Everfree Forest, and there hadn't been civil interactions ever since. The alicorns, from whom Luna had descended from, had taken it upon themselves to guard the Everfree Forest. As time passed, more and more had either died or gave up on a possible peace between two lands. Luna rested on a branch, levitating a pair of small figurines in the air. They reminded her of her parents. The white figurine would be her older sister... if only she could remember her name. It wasn't something to dwell on, yet her dreams involved her family. Why did the other alicorn disappear? Who could be watching over her sister? Was the alicorn alive or not? She had many more questions, but for now, only time would tell. What struck her odd was the fact that she heard fragments of a lullaby from time to time. If she met her sister face-to-face, would the alicorn look similar to the white figurine? A branch snapped, startling Luna out of her introspection. She rose to her height and channeled her magic into the branch. Once she was done, she said, "All fixed. You're good to go." The moon ascended into the clear dark sky, illuminating a nearby lake. Beams of silver light penetrated the forest ceiling. Nocturnal breezies stirred from their slumber and danced above the lake. It was a beautiful sight. Luna tilted her gaze toward the starlit blackness. Unfurling her large wings, she swooped upwards and spun with ease. Gone were the days of awkward flights. She zipped past the trees, giggling. The nighttime was her favorite time of day, as it was peaceful. Still, she never understood why some ponies performed their wicked deeds in the darkness. Someday, she would discover the reason. The diamond dogs tossed the mud balls at each other. One of them prepared to toss a mud ball at her. "Don't do it," Luna said. The diamond dog threw the mud ball. Luna ducked, then made her way to a glade. A trio of sisters gossiped about a young visitor. She landed in front of them. Who was the visitor, and why were they alarmed? What if the stranger was kind? She waited until they were finished talking. "A colt-" Apple Bloom began. "No, I get to talk," Sweetie Belle interrupted. "No, it's my turn," Scootaloo retorted. Luna furrowed her brows. "What did the colt do?" As usual, the three sisters bickered amongst themselves. Luna rolled her eyes and let out a sigh. As much as they meant well, they could be a nuisance at times. Her patience grew thin, and she tapped her hoof against the ground. She cleared her throat. "One at a time," Luna said. "Our apologies. The colt stole a jewel-" Apple Bloom replied. "Now he's being confronted," Sweetie Belle chimed in. "Hush, Sweetie Belle. She said one at a time, not multiple at once!" Luna dashed into the air. Her wings carried her to a pond filled with jewels. She spied two bat ponies scrutinizing the veil of leaves. She descended to the ground. The bat pony on the right stopped her from stepping closer. She turned to him, and he shook his head. Did he view her as a weak mare? She wasn't hesitant. On the other hoof, she hoped the visitor wasn't dangerous. "I'm not scared. Besides, I've never encountered an outsider up close," Luna said. Her eyes darted to the leaves. Behind the leaves was a cowering shadow. "Come out. Return the jewel to its rightful place." "No. I don't have it," a terrified voice murmured. "Yes, you did. They told me." "They mean to kill me. And they're hideous to look at." "That's not nice. The bat ponies are handsome. On a count to three..." Luna observed the shadow's body language. "One, two..." The colt emerged from the leaves. He had a gray coat and a black mane. His eyes were the color of rubies. "Alright, fine. I'll return the jewel. Can you let me go now?" Luna nodded. "I'll escort you out. Why did you steal it?" "Because it's pretty. Are you my age?" The colt asked. "I'm a preteen. There were times when you shouldn't touch something, no matter how beautiful it is." Luna levitated the jewel away from the colt's magical grip. "What's your name?" "I'm a preteen, too. My name's Sombra. Yours?" "Luna." "It's an unusual name. I thought alicorns were extinct." Luna's ears flickered. The myths and fables of ancient alicorns came to mind. Because of the legends, they were feared in Equestria. "It's a story for another time. How do you view them? Do they intrigue or frighten you?" "I'm not sure. My father never saw one, so he told me not to believe in such tales." As they walked to the border, Luna gazed at the vast field. A tall structure loomed in the distance. Who would lock oneself behind a wall? Somepony who hated the kingdom? She glanced at a small village. Was it where Sombra came from? The colt turned to face her. Wouldn't his parents be looking for him at this time of night? "You better go now. Your parents must be worried," Luna said. Sombra hung his head. "They're dead." Luna placed a hoof on his shoulder. "Mine are, too. I understand how it feels to lose a parent." "Don't you have relatives? Older siblings, aunts-" Luna pulled away. She always felt a mix of emotions whenever somepony questioned her about her relatives, or a lack thereof. Grief at her loss, disappointment in her sister for leaving the Everfree, and uncertainty concerning the future. To her friends, she was the last of her kind. In reality, nopony knew if her sister was deceased or not. "It's a sensitive topic, and I'd rather not bring it up," Luna said at last. "Can I at least accompany you to the village?" "I don't mind," Sombra replied, and they began walking toward the village. Torches lit the stone streets. Not one pony was out admiring the stars or the beauty the night brought forward. Did the Equestrians shun the night? Why would they? Luna observed the windows. They were dark. Was everypony asleep? If the absence of civilians said anything about the ponies in general, it was that they didn't share the Everfree creatures' love of the night. She wouldn't hold it against them, though. She followed Sombra to a large home. Was his adoptive family important to the town? "It's an orphanage, where I sleep each night," Sombra said. There was a sadness in his eyes, which tugged at Luna's heartstrings. "At least the mare of the house takes great care of us." He motioned to the castle in the distance. "The fortress?" Luna murmured. "Let me tell you this..." "What's so interesting about it?" "One day, I shall marry the princess and become the next king of Equestria. It's where I will live if it ever happens. I'll move out once I turn sixteen." Luna nodded as she listened. Wasn't Sombra a commoner? The Everfree creatures mentioned the king's brutal hatred of the forest. It was the reason her parents died in the last war. Once the colt finished speaking, he approached the door. She reached out her hoof, and when Sombra touched it, a hot flash shot through her hoof. She noticed a sunstone on his hoofshoe. The sunstone left a red burn on her hoof. "What's wrong?" Sombra asked. "Your hoofshoe has a sunstone on it," Luna explained. Sombra removed the sunstone and tossed it into the field. "I'm sorry. My parents gave it to me, and if it hurts you, I'll stop wearing it." "That is very sweet of you. We'll meet again." Sombra entered the house. Luna made her way back to the Everfree. Nopony outside her homeland had done something kind for her. Perhaps not all Equestrians were bad. Still, the friendship would remain a secret, as she knew her friends would tell her how dangerous the Equestrians were. If she did introduce him to the creatures, they might take some time to warm up to him. She flew to her favorite tree and began watching over the forest. Little did she know was that Sombra would someday reveal his true colors. For now, she hoped to see the peace flourish between both kingdoms... A Growing FriendshipA week passed since Luna met Sombra. In the middle of her daily afternoon flight, she spied a familiar figure in the clearing. It wasn't every day that an outsider would visit the Everfree Forest. She landed behind the figure, who turned out to be Sombra. The sun inched toward the horizon. Trees swayed in the breeze. An array of colors spilled from the horizon. A deer approached her. She touched the deer's muzzle, and it nuzzled against her hoof. Sombra was staring at the deer, yet he didn't pet the animal. Did he have something against the creatures? She hoped not. "It won't hurt you," Luna said. "If the deer attempts to eat the crops, I will chase it away," Sombra replied. Choosing to ignore the colt's remark, Luna petted the deer. Sombra stepped forward, which made the deer back away. He was staring at her wings, and she closed them. Did he expect her to attack? She knew the Equestrians held stark misconceptions about alicorns. Not all of them were dangerous. And she might be the last of her kind. Should she cover her wings to appear less intimidating? "Your wings are beautiful. They're by far the most magnificent pair I've ever seen," Sombra said. Luna blushed. "Thanks. My wings are special to me, as they're a part of who I am." "Are you aware of the tales surrounding alicorns?" "In some ways, yes. Not all are wicked. What are most Equestrians like?" "They can be gentle. Others are awful." Sombra's gaze was still on Luna's wings. "Can I touch your wings?" "Sure." Luna unfurled her wings. "Try not to push on them." Sombra's hoof met Luna's wing. "It's soft, yet strong." He pulled away. "What do you do for fun?" Luna grinned. She had just the idea. They could play on the river, where the creatures didn't gather too often. She led Sombra past the trees. She knew her friends would search for her, so she couldn't make the meeting last until bedtime. He would have to leave within an hour. By the time they found the river, they sat on the riverbank. She collected a few nuts and berries from the ground. She offered some to Sombra, and he accepted. She ate several nuts, too. "Coming here is worth the risk. My guardian will ground me if she sees me with an alicorn," Sombra said. "What scares many Equestrians the most about alicorns?" Luna asked. "Alicorns are rumored to possess great power. They're much stronger than mortal unicorns." Sombra dipped his hoof into the water. "Are we going swimming?" "Something similar. Climb onto my back." Luna beckoned Sombra closer. "And hold on tight." Sombra climbed onto Luna's back. Luna hovered above the river, flapping her wings. He was heavier than she thought. At least she managed to carry him. She could feel Sombra's head on her neck. From what she registered, he was hanging on for dear life. She continued to fly, and when he slipped off, she observed him. While she chuckled, he splashed the water at her. She descended toward him, then splashed the water back at him. They proceeded to play in the river. Their laughter penetrated the air. "You have a sweet voice," Sombra said. Luna's cheeks warmed. She hoped that he didn't see her blush. "Aww, thanks. Do you have any other friends?" "Does Radiant Hope count? She's a commoner who lives in the orphanage." They reached the riverbank and dried themselves off. Luna draped a wing across Sombra's back as they sat on a rock. "Do you want to be my friend?" Sombra smiled. "Yes. I have a gift for you. A necklace." He retrieved a necklace from his saddlebag. The sapphire was shaped like the crescent moon. Luna gasped, eyeing the gem. "It's so beautiful. This aside... I hope you don't mind me asking, but-" "Go ahead." "If you ever become the king of Equestria, what will you do on the throne?" Sombra stroked his chin. "I hope there can be peace. If the princess agrees to this, there won't be any more wars." Luna tilted her head. "Sounds ambitious. Won't you still visit the Everfree Forest?" "Of course I will visit." Without forethought, Luna hugged Sombra. Her wings cocooned him in a warm embrace. They had something in common - a desire to bring peace. And she adored this about him. Or at least, it was the same goal they had shared. Once it was time for Sombra to go, she released him. It was as though the old hatred between Equestria and Everfree had been forgotten. Perhaps harmony could be achieved in this era. It was what her parents wanted, and what her sister might have lost hope in. "I'll see you again," Sombra said. "I love the necklace. I'll wear it all the time," Luna replied. "It suits you, as your name reminds me of the moon." Luna nodded. She watched as Sombra left the forest. The golden light from the sunset bathed the forest in an ethereal glow. She trotted through the forest, and as she approached her favorite tree, a question presented itself to her. If Sombra liked her, then why did he desire to marry the princess someday? The rosebush rustled behind her. She turned her attention to the sound, and a certain draconequus leaped from his hiding place. "Boo!" Discord shouted. "You could do better than this. I don't get scared easily," Luna said. "Okay, whatever." Discord snapped his talons, and a stool appeared. He settled on the stool. "How's the afternoon by the river?" "Great." Luna hoped the draconequus wouldn't mind her friendship with Sombra. "You saw me by the river, didn't you?" "Isn't the outsider our enemy? The king of Equestria murdered your parents." Discord made a face as he mentioned the war. "It's too impossible to make peace with Equestria." "Not every Equestrian is terrible. There are wicked denizens in the Everfree, too." "I know, but even wicked creatures defend the Everfree. My ancestors fought alongside yours in countless battles of old." Luna rolled her eyes. She didn't need her friend to be overprotective. Her magic was powerful enough to harm the most baleful of enemies. "True. However, your ancestors didn't have a conscience. They've caused trouble in Equestria. Forces of nature didn't have as much of a moral compass. It didn't mean all alicorns were better than them." Discord leaned against the tree. "Do you know the real reason behind those wars? Equestrians aren't tolerant. They're trouble, and you should avoid them." "My parents want peace." "Their intentions had a cost. No wonder they aren't here today, along with your sister." Luna's ears perked up. "Did she share our parents' beliefs about peace?" "I'm only a year older than Celestia, so I don't know if she wishes for peace." "Oh. Don't you remember her?" "A little. I was four at the time." Discord flew away, unable to continue the discussion. Did he hold a grudge against the Equestrians? He never met Sombra. Therefore, he was wrong. The colt didn't have a mean bone in his body. If Discord met Sombra, he would be suspicious of him, regardless of how kind he was. Couldn't both sides let go of their prejudices? Luna sighed, observing the various creatures. If there was harmony between Timberwolves, diamond dogs, breezies, and others, why couldn't the same apply to Equestria and the Everfree Forest? Even the woodland animals were friends with one another. As the years passed, Luna and Sombra grew closer. And each time they met at the border, they would discuss their future and their lives. Sombra had made it no secret that he hoped to take the throne from the royal family. Romance blossomed in their friendship, yet she didn't know of his feelings toward the Equestrian princess. While she fostered a genuine fondness for him, he was the opposite. On Luna's sixteenth birthday, Sombra visited the border. He called for Luna, expecting her to arrive. Where did she go? His eyes scanned the treetops. The moon levitated above the eastern horizon. Did she decide to avoid him tonight? Why would she not respond? Then, he heard a familiar sound - the flapping of a certain alicorn's wings. Luna was gorgeous in the moonlight. The silver light formed a halo around her head. "I thought you wouldn't come," Luna said. "I did. I have a gift for you," Sombra replied. "What is it?" Luna's eyes brightened. They were now mere inches apart. Sombra leaned closer and closed his eyes. Luna's mouth met his. Time seemed to stand still. It was pure and honest. Luna called this the True Love's Kiss. When they finished the kiss, Luna wore a bashful smile. He found it adorable. "This is the gift," Sombra said. "It's what I thought," Luna murmured. "I hope we never drift apart." The young couple reclined on the grass, stargazing. A star streaked across the black sky. Luna pulled Sombra closer. They might be in love, but it wasn't meant to be. After all, Sombra kept his involvement with the princess a secret. On the other hoof, Luna had nothing to hide. "Have you moved to the castle yet?" Luna asked. "I'm a squire," Sombra revealed. "Are you and the princess-" "No. She's betrothed to a prince." Sombra sounded unsure. Was he being honest? Luna didn't want him to have an affair. If serving at the castle meant he couldn't visit as often, he better not flirt with the other mare. What if it was all a lie? What if his true motive was to get what he wanted from the Everfree? Soon, she would find out whether his love for her was real or not. Fight for the EverfreeAs the years hurried on, Sombra visited the Everfree less and less. He didn't seem as concerned about harmony as he used to be in his youth. Luna wondered why. Was it possible that he was having an affair with the princess of Equestria? Did somepony really need to have two lovers at once? Was it Sombra's intention to lead both mares on? No matter what questions Luna asked about the castle, Sombra preferred to keep it private. He didn't think she should be snooping around in his business. Yet Luna was suspicious. What on Earth was going on over there? Luna became the most powerful defender of the Everfree Forest. Although the Equestrians investigated the border sometimes, they wouldn't destroy the forest as long as she watched. One evening, Sombra visited the forest after days of being absent. She landed behind him as she did in her youth. Her wings now spanned nearly eight feet, which could intimidate somepony who had never met an alicorn. "Greetings, Sombra," Luna said. Sombra whirled around. "Oh. I thought you wouldn't notice. How are you?" "I'm good. Is the princess your other romantic interest?" "No. She won't rush into a relationship after her husband died. And she has a newborn son to look after." "You're interested in her?" "Of course not. You're my first love, and our first kiss wasn't for nothing." Luna draped a wing over Sombra's back and led him to a glade. There, they lay on the grass, gazing at the starlit sky. She leaned against him. She kissed his mouth. For a moment, she felt as close to him as they were years ago. When she finished the kiss, she moved her head to his ear. "You're one to disappear these days. Can you be honest for once? And don't beat around the bush. I can't stand dishonesty." Sombra rose to his height. "Whatever you say. I'm not in love with Princess Velvet! As I stated earlier, she's still in mourning!" Luna jumped to her height. "Don't use that tone on me. Admit it. You're being evasive! It better not be a secret affair!" "I. Am. Not. Lying!" Sombra narrowed his eyes. "Stay out of my private life!" His horn emitted a red glow. Luna's wings stiffened. "Just don't. I thought we shared a desire for peace." Sombra's posture softened. "Oh, right. Forgive me. I won't use my magic against you. Good night." "Night." Luna watched as Sombra escaped the glade. A familiar flap of wings, and Discord was standing by the trees, his arms crossed. Did he see the whole thing? He had made it no secret that he disapproved of Sombra. Even when they had chatted a few times, Discord made subtle insults. One time, he threatened to banish Sombra to his chaotic dimension. "Did I hear you correctly? Do I see a break-up in the near future?" Discord asked. Luna's ears flattened against her skull. She had no time for Discord's jealousy. "Sombra is just distant. I'm sure his job requires more and more of his time, so don't jump to conclusions." "Oh, come on. I think you're cute." Luna felt her cheeks redden. "You're not the only one who says I'm cute." Discord stepped forward. "It's a shame that you're pushing me aside." "And for a good reason. Why do you hate Sombra? What has he done to you? You can't judge every Equestrian-" "I've heard that many times." Discord rolled his eyes. "It's like a story about forbidden love. You have me." Luna made her way to her favorite cliff. Discord trailed behind her. "Let me get this straight. The reason you hate Sombra is because you have a crush on me?" "I can't tolerate Equestrians," Discord said. "I don't want to lose you." Luna knew what Discord meant, yet his voice suggested something else. It confirmed her guess about his feelings. He had liked her for quite a while. Why else would he be jealous and protective? Despite his protectiveness, she could take care of herself. Alicorns were stronger than other ponies. She scrutinized the border. Her eyes followed the path to the castle, and she shuddered. It appeared more frigid at night. She never understood her coltfriend's desire to live in that fortress. "Just be careful," Discord whispered. Luna nodded. She didn't even look at her friend. The night dragged on, and she couldn't take her gaze off the castle. If Princess Velvet was widowed, it could open up the possibility of Sombra dating her. A marriage might happen, and then what? Would he still consider settling the conflict between Equestria and the Everfree Forest by then? Or abandon his promise altogether? She wasn't one to be jealous unless there was a genuine reason. Even if she were to discuss the potential peace when she met the royal family of Equestria, the king wouldn't listen. He was the one who murdered her parents. As the sun rose into the eastern horizon, a noise interrupted Luna's thoughts. In the distance, a large army approached. The hoofsteps pounded the ground. There were unicorns holding weapons. All the Equestrians were armed. Not one pony was without the armor. She took to the skies and dashed to the border. The thought of an alicorn ready for battle should intimidate them, right? "The mysterious Everfree Forest, where all the treasures are hidden!" The leader of the army shouted. "We're not afraid of some malevolent creature!" "I watched you come," Luna said. "Go no further!" As she spoke, her voice increased in volume. "Return to where you came from!" The stallion glared at Luna. "A king doesn't take orders from a winged unicorn." He scanned the crowd behind him. "Anypony too afraid to charge at her?" A group of ponies turned to leave. "Crush the Everfree creatures!" "You... are no king to me! Depart from the border!" Luna hollered. Behind her, the creatures came forward. From diamond dogs to Timberwolves, they were determined to protect their home. "Those are dark creatures!" The king exclaimed. Luna charged at the army. Her wings slammed into each pony. One by one, they fell to their sides. She summoned a large magical ball. She was about to eliminate the king. He deflected her magic with his own. The beams pushed back and forth. She descended closer to him. Her horn came in contact with the king's helmet, and she gasped in pain. She jumped back. The king smirked. Who was he to march over here and try to destroy the Everfree Forest? She shot another beam at him, slamming him into the ground as a result. "You will not have the Everfree Forest! Not now, not today, not ever!" Luna bellowed. The army retreated to the castle. Luna gave the signal, and the creatures ceased their attack. She flew back to the cliff. And for once, something didn't seem right about her current romance. Would Sombra side with the king? What if he chose to turn against her? It had always been her biggest fear. If he turned against her, how then would there be peace? Since the princess might be the king's child, they could convince Sombra to betray her. Discord landed next to Luna. "The war is the reason you should reconsider your relationship with Sombra." "He's not responsible for the war," Luna replied. "Don't pester me about him anymore." "Go ahead and defend him. I'll mind my own business in the chaotic realm." Luna dismissed the draconequus. He was stubborn, but this time, it was as though he wanted to change her opinion on Sombra. She'd rather not be pessimistic. Discord's attitude toward Equestria was wearying enough on her soul. She had hoped that he would at least keep an open mind, yet he didn't. What if her dream of peace was too far-fetched? Was he correct in his suspicions? Would a future meeting with Sombra bring out his true colors? BetrayalThe king lay in bed. Dozens of generals and council ponies surrounded him. Sombra watched the scene from the doorway, waiting for his turn to speak. Part of his focus was on the golden crown. It beckoned him, tempting him to put it on. Yet he couldn't. Not with others present. They could suspect his motives. Somepony might assume that he planned to overthrow the king. He strained to hear the conversation. The ruler's voice wasn't as loud and commanding as usual. Instead, the king was wheezing between each sentence. "When I inherited the throne, I promised Equestria that I would take the treasures from the Everfree Forest... and destroy the dark creatures," the king continued. "Is this to be my legacy? Defeated in battle... Now you're watching me die. Who will take the throne? My daughter can't rule alone. And my grandson is too young to bear this responsibility." Sombra stepped closer. He was tempted to say yes to the opportunity. What if there was a cost? He had been friends with Luna since their youth, and he didn't want it to change. Yet his heart was on marrying Princess Velvet. Why didn't Night Light survive the plague? It was as though the hoof of fate was directing him toward his ultimate goal - the crown. In his eyes, the princess had lost her luster. Perhaps because she loved Night Light with her entire heart. Would she even accept a commoner's hoof in marriage? Probably not. Unless he could do something about it. "My daughter doesn't need the extra burden on her soul. She had given birth to Shining Armor last week, and if she gains my full power..." "Your Majesty, I'll take the throne," Sombra said without hesitation. "Really, Sombra? You desire to accept my offer? There is one thing you have to do before marrying Princess Velvet. Kill the winged unicorn. She's cruel and wicked. The prophesied mare of darkness. She'll destroy Equestria if you choose to spare her." Why should Sombra murder his own friend? Luna had done nothing wrong. She had to defend the Everfree Forest. "There is another way. I can discuss the peace treaty. I'm sure she'll be willing to listen." The king grunted in response to Sombra's suggestion. "Then why did she choose to attack me and my army? She is the reason I'm about to die. Have nothing to do with such beasts. Wait, have you known her?" He narrowed his eyes. "Kill her and avenge me! If you do as I say, I'll give you the crown!" Sombra hesitated. Perhaps he shouldn't have hinted at his secret romance. "Never mind. I'll obey your orders." He backed out of the room. He bumped into Princess Velvet. She was a beautiful young mare with a purple and white mane, a light gray coat, and bright blue eyes. "How is my father?" Velvet asked. "He's dying," Sombra said. "I'll avenge him." "Don't let the winged unicorn win. They're more powerful than unicorns." "I'll be back soon." "Luna? Luna!" Sombra called. He was in the glade, where he and Luna had argued last night. The moon slipped behind the clouds. So did the stars. Where was Luna? Did she hold his words against him? He heard a sound that wasn't uncommon in the Everfree Forest - Luna's wings. The alicorn's hooves touched the ground. Her teal eyes searched his face. An invisible breeze seemed to ripple through her mane. Instead of the usual warmth, there was distrust and worry in her expression. The war must have added to her stress. "Hello again, Sombra," Luna murmured. Her tone was stoic. "Are you still loyal to me? I loved you. Was the gift on my sixteenth birthday for real?" "I love you... too..." Sombra didn't feel honest. His mind was still on the crown, not on his marefriend. "Besides, the king intends to kill you. So does his servants. They're horrible. Even a peace treaty won't-" "Won't what?" Luna unfurled her wings. Sombra inhaled deeply. He couldn't escape this confrontation. "It won't convince them to stop their hatred of the Everfree Forest. Forgive me if I had been distant since your sixteenth birthday." He maintained eye contact. "My heart doesn't belong to the throne and the princess." Silence fell between them. Luna had once loved Sombra. Now she wasn't sure if she should trust him. His voice sounded honest, yet her instincts told her to be skeptical. "Last time you said you loved me, you didn't visit as often. You got defensive last night when I questioned you. Is your love genuine?" Sombra nodded. "Yes, it is. Don't doubt me. My heart is here, not in the castle." He caressed Luna's cheek. "No princess or kingdom will prevent us from being together." Luna's cheeks warmed. Her heart fluttered. It was like her sixteenth birthday, where Sombra expressed his fondness for her. The clouds disappeared from the sky, as though the night was in-tune with her emotions. Perhaps it was. Since she was moved by Sombra's words, she would give him a second chance. There was no reason to hold a grudge. She could achieve her parents' goal. Peace was possible. It would take some time for the creatures to trust the ponies of Equestria. There should be no more wars for as long as there was a peace treaty. They walked to a river, then sat against the rock. Luna was reminded of her youth. She draped her wing across Sombra's back. It was the most wonderful of nights. There, they discussed the two kingdoms and the need for peace. Eventually, the conversation shifted to their future together. Well, their future offspring might grow up in a world that never knew a single war. "It's still worth the risk," Sombra whispered. "I know. Regardless, I'll introduce you to other creatures in the Everfree. I want them to be acquainted with you," Luna said. "Discord doesn't like me." "Don't mind him. He's prone to jealousy. He should be able to get over it." "Want a drink?" Sombra levitated a flask. Luna took the flask and drank it. Something in the drink made her tired. It was unusual, as she wasn't sleepy at night. She began to drift off. The last thing on her mind was a visualization of a wonderful future, with Sombra by her side, enjoying the harmony between Equestria and the Everfree Forest... The alicorn's body went limp, giving Sombra the opportunity to avenge the king. He pulled a dagger from his saddlebag, then levitated the weapon above the slumbering mare. However, he couldn't bring himself to harm Luna. He shoved the dagger into his saddlebag and yanked the chains out. The chains were lined with sunstones. He wrapped the chains around Luna's wings and ripped them off her back. He had a feeling that Luna would retaliate, so he nudged her body to make sure she wasn't awake. A sigh of relief escaped Sombra's mouth. For a moment, guilt shot through his heart. They were friends, and yet he did this to Luna? He shook the thoughts from his mind. There was no use lingering by her side after what he did. He galloped toward the border. He peered over his shoulder. At least the alicorn didn't come after him. It would be scary if she did. A snakelike figure with horns made its way forward. The branches snapped behind him. He galloped away from the Everfree before the creature could catch him. Once he wasn't in the vicinity, he teleported to the castle. By sunrise, Luna awakened to a sharp pain in her spine. She observed the area. Where did Sombra go? Perhaps it was a strange dream. A blue feather caught her eye. Dread formed in her stomach. She glanced at her back, where her wings were. In place of her wings were a pair of scars. Tears formed in her eyes. An anguished cry erupted from her throat. Sombra stole her wings! How could he? She struggled to sit up, but her legs gave out under her. Why did he do this to her? He claimed to love her... yet actions spoke louder than words. Her fear was right all along. Sombra was a liar and a thief. He chose Equestria over the Everfree Forest. Their first meeting had led other Equestrians here. The kiss on Luna's sixteenth birthday was all a lie. And Discord had warned her many times. She hadn't listened to him. If she had chosen him over Sombra, none of this would have happened. Not that she wanted to enter another loveless relationship. Her sobs racked her whole body as she dwelled on the betrayal. How did she ignore the red flags? How could she have been so blind? Would the Everfree creatures view her as vulnerable from now on? Luna swore to never allow another soul into her broken heart ever again. Not after what Sombra did. Besides, he had shattered her heart into a million pieces. She rose to her height and strolled past the trees. Because of her vulnerability, she had put the Everfree in danger. Perhaps she shouldn't be here. The ruins in the distance beckoned her closer. She might live there. The Bitterness in Her HeartMeanwhile, at the castle, Sombra dropped the alicorn wings on the bottom of the bed. The king watched his every move. Was the royal impressed? He ran his hoof across the midnight blue wings. The soft sensation transported his mind to his youth, where he had first met Luna. He shoved the memory aside. Now was not the time for nostalgia and guilt. He was here to take the throne, not reject it. "I avenged you, Majesty. Give me the reward you had promised," Sombra said. "You're a lowly commoner. Why should I let you marry my daughter?" The king replied. "Did you not hear my words? The wicked alicorn is dead. I'm sure of it." "You're not the only servant who seeks power. Everypony wants to rule over a kingdom of their own. It's nothing new, and nopony knows your name!" The king began laughing. His laughter became a series of coughs. Sombra clenched his jaw. He had obeyed the king's orders, yet he was taunted like this? Why would he aim for the throne if the king intended to stand in the way? He had not done the unthinkable just to be mocked. He stomped to the left side of the bed, levitated a pillow, and glowered at the king. Even when the king was close to death, this old stallion had managed to make fun of him. "You're not a worthy successor! Velvet will never marry a mere peasant," the king said. "I'm called Sombra. Your daughter shall marry me... whether she likes it or not!" Sombra retorted as he shoved the pillow into the king's face. The king took in a final breath. Sombra turned his gaze to the crown on the vanity. He levitated the crown closer to his head. Even the mirror seemed to agree with his goal. Hoofsteps approached the door, and he swiftly returned the crown to the vanity. He answered the door. A servant scrutinized the bed, and before the servant could say anything, he led him into the hallway. Today, he shall be king, and he shall marry the princess. "He suffered a heart attack," Sombra lied. "I'm the one who killed the alicorn." The stallion hung his head. "The king will be missed. I'll go fetch the royal robe for you. What is your name?" "Sombra." Once the stallion was gone, Sombra trotted to the throne room. Princess Velvet smiled at him, and he smiled back. According to a chancellor, the coronation would start when the worthy stallion inherited the crown. Once again, the guilt tugged at his heartstrings. Would his position cost him his conscience, too? He had heard stories of rulers who ignored their morals to become the most powerful leaders of their kingdoms. "Are you the one who will become the next king?" Velvet inquired. "Of course," Sombra said. "And I'm proud of my accomplishments." Luna stood in front of the ruins. It was desolate, just like her. She had loved Sombra, but he had not reciprocated once in their relationship. She entered the ruins. Shadows stretched across the stone floor. The sun hurried behind the clouds. She allowed the darkness to fester in her heart. Where had their relationship gone wrong? On her sixteenth birthday? The meeting after? She sat by the window. The hours dragged on, and she sensed the occasional flap of phantom wings. Thunder crackled in the distance. Was there anything left for her in this cold, harsh world? She closed her eyes and hoped that it was all a dream. Luna opened her eyes, and she was still in the ruins. Was her dream of peace all for naught? If her parents hadn't chosen peace, they would be alive today. They never got to watch her grow into a beautiful young mare. It was Equestria's fault. The other kingdom was too brutal to be tamed by a mere peace treaty. As night surrounded the land, she became aware of a presence in the room. "Luna, the time has come for you to avenge the Everfree Forest," a soft voice said. Luna looked up. She found herself staring into a pair of slitted eyes. "And who are you? Have you followed me here? I have no interest in anypony whosoever." "I am your dark side. Nightmare Moon. I cried with you the whole time. Sombra is a piece of vile scum, and so is the rest of Equestria. Your wings were magnificent... and he had robbed you of such a treasure." Luna couldn't find a reason to disagree. Today was the worst day of her life. "If you were my dark side, why was Sombra allowed to steal my wings?" Nightmare Moon's face was mere inches from Luna's. "Together, we won't allow Sombra to get away with his deeds. He stole something important to you. Revenge is the perfect solution." She walked around Luna, keeping her pace as slow as possible. "Are you ready to transform into your dark side? Destroy anypony who dares to threaten your homeland? You must not allow anything to soften our heart." The temperature in the room dropped. There was venom in Nightmare Moon's voice. Luna was prepared for her transformation, no matter the cost. Summoning her magic, she fused the aura with Nightmare Moon's. She levitated into the air. A ball of darkness surrounded her. Countless memories, good and bad, rushed through her mind. Her body became taller, her teeth turned into fangs, and her pupils were now slits. She would no longer be Luna, as the name itself didn't have a sinister connotation. From now on, she was Nightmare Moon. Three hours before sunrise, Nightmare Moon walked along the border between Equestria and the Everfree Forest. She spied a nearby village. It was where Sombra grew up. Even the thought of his name made her blood boil. Trotting to the village, she found the orphanage. Her horn glowed. A dark aura emerged from the tip of her horn. The spell caused the residents to plunge into the scariest of dreams. A malicious grin widened across her face. Years ago, she wouldn't even consider casting a curse upon the villagers. Shadows entered the next house. A pony raced out of the village, screaming in fear. Nightmare Moon left the village. A small shriek garnered her attention. Instead of a pony, it was a small creature. Despite the lack of light, she could tell that the creature was a possum. It was trapped under a net. A stallion chuckled at the possum's pain. That poor thing. Her magic flowed into the possum, and it transformed into a Thestral. The stallion backed away, trembling visibly. "What is this?" The stallion exclaimed. His eyes darted around, and the moment he glanced at Nightmare Moon, he froze. "Is this... an alicorn?" "You're looking at one," Nightmare replied. "A wingless alicorn, to be exact." "Get away from me!" The stallion galloped toward the village. Nightmare approached the Thestral, who was once a small possum. Her gaze traveled to his bat wings. An idea formed in her mind. Perhaps he could spy on Sombra. "You can come with me. There are rules to follow. Number one, don't cease your loyalty. Number two, be as detailed as possible in your reports." "What happened to my beautiful self?" The Thestral inquired. "I saved you. Would you rather be killed by those savages?" "Sorry, miss. I'm Tiberius, and I prefer my possum form." Nightmare stroked her chin. "Understandable. However, there is something you need to do first. Do you know where the castle is? And if anything significant occurs..." She lowered her voice. "Tell me what Sombra and his princess are doing." "I know where the castle is! Okay? And I'll be honest once I gather the information." "Don't keep me waiting." When morning came, Sombra entered the throne room, wearing a deep red robe and charcoal gray armor. Because of his regal attire, he seemed intimidating. He settled on his new throne, surveying the room. The ornate hall was a picture of royalty with its high ceilings, a marble floor, giant tapestries, and colorful stained glass windows. Sunlight illuminated the windows, making the colors glow. A hoof touched his. Queen Velvet made eye contact. Her warm blue eyes reminded him of a younger Luna - except Luna's eyes had a greenish tint. A wave of guilt rose in his throat, and he quashed it as soon as it came. He forced himself to focus on the task at hoof. Sombra couldn't help but feel as though he was being watched. The advisors weren't even looking at him. If it wasn't them, who was judging him? He saw something move in his peripheral vision, yet it wasn't his wife. He turned his head to the right, and sure enough, there was somepony staring through a high window. Was it a Thestral? He blinked to make sure he wasn't imagining things. Once he opened his eyes, the Thestral wasn't present. "You seem troubled," Velvet pointed out. "I'm exhausted," Sombra lied. "Oh, it makes sense. The coronation and the wedding had taken their toll on you." "That's for sure." A trio of breezies barged in, interrupting the conversation with their unexpected arrival. Sombra glowered at them. Did Luna send them? If not, then who? Discord? He could never tolerate Discord's existence anyways. The breezies hovered in front of Sombra. As tempting as it was to blast them away, he restrained himself. No use being viewed as a tyrant early on in his reign. "Your majesties! The castle is extravagant!" The breezie with a yellow coat said. "My name's Apple Bloom. My sisters are Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo." "Ah, so Luna sent you," Sombra assumed. "No, she didn't. We sensed the darkness descending upon the Everfree-" Apple Bloom continued. Sweetie Belle nudged Apple Bloom. "We're here to seek asylum. Your furnishings are gorgeous... and you love to dress up!" Her words brought a smile to Velvet's face. "Also, we hate wars," Scootaloo said. Apple Bloom nodded. "We wish that you will have a foal to continue your bloodline." Sweetie Belle wore a broad grin. "We're good with little ones." Sombra sighed. "Alright. You can stay here." Back at the ruins, a certain Thestral landed by Nightmare Moon, prepared to deliver the news. She had been silent the whole time, as she was still processing her pain. What Tiberius was about to tell her wouldn't make her happy. Regardless, she desired to know what Sombra was up to. "Sombra is a king. Also, a trio of breezies sought asylum in the castle. He's married to Queen Velvet," Tiberius said. "Just as I suspected," Nightmare muttered under her breath. Her aura intensified around her. "Sombra stole my wings... to become king?" Her voice echoed off the stone walls. "I wish we never met." A huge scream erupted from her throat. Thunder boomed ominously. Nightmare turned Tiberius into a possum, then allowed him to climb onto her back. Marching toward the Everfree, she allowed dark clouds to block out any remaining light. She had been a fool to think the war between Equestria and her homeland would end. It wouldn't be long before Sombra and his army chose to attack the Everfree Forest. The creatures backed away in fear as they watched Nightmare stroll past them. In the center of the forest, a throne emerged. She lowered herself onto the tall throne. The minotaurs told the creatures to kneel before her. As they did so, she accepted her role as Queen of the Everfree Forest. A Nightmarish CurseOver the next year, Nightmare Moon had remained vigilant. The danger was imminent, yet there hadn't been any wars as of late. The creatures, though wary of her, had adjusted to the change in the Everfree Forest's leadership. They hadn't needed a queen or a king before. She preferred to spend her time alone. Because she missed her wings, she wore a cape that would flow in a strong breeze. Her armor was created to protect herself against sunstones. As spring took winter's place, her companion visited the castle more often. One morning, Tiberius landed behind her. He wasn't used to his Thestral form. "Nightmare Moon," Tiberius began. "The king-" "What?" Nightmare interrupted. "He has a..." Tiberius' voice trailed off. "No, I mean..." His bat wings unfurled, ready to flee. Nightmare's glare intensified. "Speak!" Her voice startled Tiberius. "He has a daughter. Her name is Twilight Sparkle." Nightmare grimaced. It was a name that she liked, and Sombra dared to ruin it. "Continue. Don't stop at the name. Why is this important?" Tiberius' ears flattened against his skull. His eyes darted around. "Today, there will be a christening. The celebration will be huge. Don't overreact. Maybe you can, uh... not attack the royal family?" "Your suggestions don't mean anything. A christening sounds wonderful..." Nightmare smirked. "Let's go." Everypony in Equestria was invited to the christening. From the highest noble to the lowest commoner, they had a chance to see the newest princess. Nopony could contain their excitement. Not even the king and queen. Countless servants decorated the halls and prepared the feast. Delicious aromas filled a grand dining room. Hundreds of chandeliers had been lit, and the floor was polished until it shone. Little fillies and colts asked the rulers if they could look into the bassinet. Queen Velvet's older son, Shining Armor, scowled at the foals. For a young colt, he was already protective of his little sister. The king and queen didn't seem to mind. A trio of breezies levitated above the bassinet. Everypony settled in their respective seats. Queen Velvet caressed the stone on her pendant, a stone that originated from the Everfree Forest. King Sombra had given the necklace to her last year. The stone glistened in the light. Sombra leaned closer and whispered into Velvet's ear. Hidden in the shadows, near the grand doors, stood Nightmare Moon. She couldn't ignore the pendant. So, not only had Sombra stolen her wings, he also stole the stone? Anger surged through her heart. And the chatter about Twilight Sparkle! If not for the betrayal, the princess would have been her own daughter instead of Velvet's. Tiberius, in his possum form, fidgeted as he sensed Nightmare Moon's growing rage. She proceeded to glower at the large crowd. They were so in love with the little breezies. They probably thought that little breezies were adorable and harmless. There had been darker breezies. Apple Bloom touched Twilight Sparkle's sapphire mane. There were streaks of rose and magenta. "Sweet Twilight Sparkle, you shall have the gift of beauty." Next, Sweetie Belle granted a wish. "You'll never be blue, only cheerful, all the days of your life." Scootaloo was the last to give Twilight a gift. "I wish..." She paused as she glanced around. "I wish... excuse me, your majesties... I need to think..." Nightmare Moon had enough. She could no longer stand by while the ponies obsessed over Sombra's squirming little spawn! Her mane swirled around her, and she transformed into a mist. She teleported to the front of the crowd, startling everypony in the room. A powerful blast exterminated the chandeliers and tossed the headpieces about. Only Sombra recognized her, despite a change in her appearance. "Luna! I never expected you to attend the christening," Sombra exclaimed, his hoof on his chest. He considered begging his former friend to forgive, yet he couldn't bring himself to do so. "Depart in peace." The word itself made Nightmare scowl. "Peace? You're kidding, you're kidding, right? You chose Equestria over the Everfree Forest. Regardless, I shall grant your dear Twilight Sparkle a gift." She inched forward. "Quite a grand assemblage, King Sombra. Nobility, the peasantry..." She pointed at the breezies. "Even the rabble." "You're not welcome here." Nightmare Moon ignored Sombra's words. "I felt quite distressed at not receiving an invitation." Sombra shook his head. "You heard me." Nightmare let out a dramatic gasp. "Oh, dear... what an awkward situation." She peered at the crowd, and the ponies cowered. Queen Velvet rose from her seat. Despite her fear, the royal upbringing compelled her to speak. "And you're not offended?" "No, your Majesty." Nightmare Moon approached the bassinet. "You made a wise choice when giving Twilight Sparkle her name. I, too, shall bestow a gift upon her." Sombra moved closer to the bassinet, prepared to fight Nightmare Moon. "Don't do something you'll regret. I kept telling you to leave, and you won't listen. If you cross the line-" Nightmare cleared her throat. The sound silenced Sombra as a result. "No. Do not assume." Her horn glowed. "Twilight Sparkle shall indeed grow in grace and beauty... beloved by all she meets." As she spoke, jealousy swirled in her heart like a violent storm. She would never have a filly this beautiful, and nopony to care for. There would never be a foal of her own to carry on her magnificent wings and her hair color. "It's a nice gift," Velvet murmured, still frightened. Nightmare Moon whipped around. The crowd gasped at her reaction. "When the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday, she shall prick her hoof on a spindle and fall into a death-like slumber. No power on earth can change it!" Sombra stepped forward. "Please, Luna-" "Nightmare Moon!" "Okay, Nightmare Moon... I beg you." Nightmare snickered at Sombra. He had the gall to grovel. "I like begging. Do it again, Sombra the traitorous king." Sombra peered at the crowd, aware of their presence. They were oblivious to what he had done to a certain alicorn. His daughter's life was at stake, so he couldn't give up. "Alright... I beg you. Don't make it any harder than it was. Velvet desired a foal ever since the wedding, and if Twilight dies young... it's your fault." "The curse can be broken by..." Nightmare paused for dramatic effect. "True love's kiss. The curse shall last until the end of time!" The grand doors swung open, and Nightmare prepared to leave. Behind her, Sombra signaled the guards to attack. She shot magical blasts at them and fled the throne room, leaving panic and distress in her wake. She teleported to the Everfree Forest. It was time to take extreme measures, as she was now powerful enough to create a sturdy barrier. But she needed a bit of help. "Discord! Over here!" Nightmare Moon hollered. The moment she finished speaking, Discord materialized by the border. "You look like Luna, only scarier. What do you need?" "Plunderseeds. They are known to grow into massive vines." "What do you need the vines for?" "To protect the forest." Discord tossed the plunderseeds into the ground. He snapped his talons, and massive vines sped toward the sky, forming a massive barrier. Nightmare Moon was satisfied with the result, so she smiled. "Good job. Now go back to your chaotic dwelling." Discord gawked at Nightmare's back. "What happened to your wings?" "Sombra happened." The pain returned to Nightmare's heart. "It's a sensitive topic." "Sorry." Nightmare watched Discord leave. She didn't want his pity. She trotted past the trees and reached her throne. Earlier, she had been unsure of what she should do at the castle. However, her plan came through, and now Sombra would go insane. It was what she wanted to see. One cursed foal meant one less threat to the Everfree. While many creatures were comfortable around her, old friends chose to stay away. Somewhere in her frozen heart, she understood the reason. She had lost them as soon as she lost her wings. She might miss their friendship from time to time, but what was done was done. Her former naivety had caused her so much pain. And before Tiberius could express his disapproval, Nightmare Moon turned him back into a possum. She cackled at the thought of Sombra's misfortune. By now, the kingdom was probably in an uproar over the curse. And she didn't care. However, her heart might change over the years... Raising the PrincessAfter Nightmare Moon cursed the princess, Sombra requested a nationwide removal of spinning wheels. The spindles were removed from countless households and thrown into the depths of the dungeon. He had also ordered the three breezies to take Twilight Sparkle to an isolated location, where they would raise her for sixteen years and a day. His intention was to keep her safe from dark magic and spinning wheels. While he had assumed that nopony but his closest advisors knew of the plan, a certain Thestral had seen the breezies on the way out of the castle. Apple Bloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo had made themselves grow to the size of regular ponies. Once Tiberius reported this information to Nightmare Moon, she couldn't believe what she was hearing. So the three breezies were tasked with raising the princess? She shook her head. "Sombra doesn't have a clue, does he? Also, those three... raising a foal? Idiots." Before Tiberius could ask who Nightmare was referring to, she turned him into a possum and put him on her back. She strolled past the border of both kingdoms and reached a small cottage. It was located on a small hill, with cobblestones leading up to the front door. Tons of flowers dotted the yard. Butterflies hovered above the colorful blooms. If not for the recent events, she would have considered the garden beautiful. Upon closer inspection, there were weeds in the ground, and cracks in the foundation beneath the cottage. Somepony hadn't occupied the residence in quite some time, it seemed. The three breezies, who now masqueraded as a trio of earth ponies, clumsily renovated their new home and cleared out the remaining debris. Nightmare Moon hid behind a cluster of trees and waited for them to enter the cottage. They had forgotten to take Twilight inside. She knew they would forget. She looked to her back, where Tiberius was currently sitting. The possum peered over her head, as though curious about the secluded home. "We're not here to watch them," Nightmare reminded Tiberius, and the possum squeaked in protest. Apple Bloom rushed out and retrieved the bassinet. "Oh, I'm so sorry, sweet Twilight. You'll be inside your new room, safe and sound." Then, she disappeared through the door. Nightmare moved to the window, where the new room could be. The window was left open. Baby Twilight was sleeping peacefully. "Oh, look..." She murmured. "I could almost feel sorry for it. This little beastie won't live a long life." Twilight opened her eyes and gazed at Nightmare Moon. In response, Nightmare scowled in disgust. This made the princess giggle, so she hissed at her. Twilight giggled again. Why wasn't the princess scared? After all, Nightmare Moon had fangs and slitted pupils. Those features would frighten anypony else. "I hate you," Nightmare said. Before Nightmare could make the scariest face possible, she heard the breezies approaching. She hurried back to her hiding spot. Immediately, the filly started to cry. Nightmare listened as the trio bickered among themselves. Apple Bloom attempted to be the leader, while her younger sisters were trying to figure out the reason behind Twilight's screams. A minute later, Apple Bloom plopped the fruits into the bassinet. The wailing grew louder once the trio fled the room. Nightmare tensed. "The little beastie will starve. With those three looking after it, the princess won't survive." Despite her words, Twilight Sparkle was the least of her concerns. At least the reports on Sombra would keep her entertained. She trotted to her homeland. And when night came, Twilight's screams faded. By then, she knew who had fed the princess. It was fine if the princess could stay alive. The young royal would be in for a huge shock sixteen years later. For the next several weeks, Tiberius visited the castle in Thestral form and came back with new information each time. Apparently for Sombra, the lack of spindles wasn't enough. The king had boarded up the windows and rose the drawbridge to prevent Nightmare Moon from entering. Sombra's paranoia was already beginning to overcome his psyche. At times, he sent his army to the wall to destroy the plundervines and burn the Everfree Forest to the ground. Once, the Equestrians catapulted fireballs at the massive vines, hoping to bypass the barrier. Behind the barrier, Nightmare Moon strengthened the vines. The vines launched one pony as far away as possible. The scream was music to her ears. She chuckled at the stallion's misery. Her enemies seemed to understand the message, so they returned to the castle. Her parents had believed that civilized talks would prevent future attacks. However, the barrier was the only way to keep the Equestrians out. Let Sombra's kingdom fall into ruins. He had found a reason to hide behind the frigid castle walls. He was a coward and a liar, much like every other Equestrian. Nightmare found herself veering toward the impenetrable wall. For some odd reason, her old memories had prompted her curiosity. Maybe the village was abandoned? There was one way to know, which was by visiting the town. She hesitated as she parted the wall. Other than her memories, there was no other reason to enter the village. The cottage beckoned her away from the border. Tiberius squeaked again, and Nightmare gave him a strict glare. "You don't get to be here for long. Why do you want to see Twilight?" When the possum didn't answer, Nightmare let out an exasperated sigh. She trotted to the cottage and settled on a tree. She observed the breezies from a distance. They were tending the garden, and it was tedious to watch. Was there a no-magic rule? As usual, the trio quarreled. "This isn't what I signed up for," Sweetie Belle complained. "Why? What do you mean?" Scootaloo retorted. "We can't go back to Everfree. Nightmare Moon would destroy the princess," Apple Bloom interrupted. "Let's stay positive. After all, she brought a dark cloud of doom upon Equestria," Sweetie Belle said. "Sweetie Belle has a point. Let's change the topic." Nightmare summoned a small thundercloud. The thundercloud hovered over the group. Small raindrops fell onto Apple Bloom. To be fair, they asked for a storm. She suppressed her laughter so they wouldn't hear her. Flashes of lightning startled Sweetie Belle, who was the most sensitive of the three sisters. Scootaloo appeared nervous, yet she didn't react the same way. "Who did this?" Apple Bloom shrieked. "We didn't do it," Scootaloo said. "I told you not to use magic! And you broke the rules!" "Sweetie Belle started it." Sweetie Belle shook her head. "I'm the innocent one." Apple Bloom rolled her eyes. "Stating the obvious, aren't you?" More and more thunderclouds formed. The breezies concluded that it was raining, so they rushed inside. Nightmare Moon laughed. She hurried back to the Everfree Forest to supervise the border. Once she was alone, she allowed herself to go into hysterics. However, the possum appeared unamused. Didn't Tiberius find it funny at all? She moseyed to her throne and surveyed the forest. The months turned into years, and Nightmare Moon continued to visit the cottage. Now Twilight Sparkle was a toddler, intrigued by the world around her. One evening, she saw that the door was wide open. The breezies were nowhere in sight, and Twilight was already playing by the river. The first cluster of stars materialized in the sky, which garnered Twilight's attention. The moon had just rose into the eastern horizon. The water reflected the moon. Twilight stepped into the water. But the current was too strong for her to handle. She lost her balance and fell into the water, screaming. Nightmare Moon reached the river in time and levitated Twilight to safety. A grin replaced the filly's frightened expression. "Hello," Twilight murmured. "I'm going home. Be careful," Nightmare said. She had intended to tell Twilight to go away, yet those words came out instead. How did this happen? Was it a motherly instinct? She'd rather not let the princess into her heart, not after what Sombra had done long ago. "Don't go..." Twilight said. She widened her eyes and frowned, which was what any foal would do when begging a parent. Try as she might, Nightmare Moon couldn't look away from the big purple eyes and the adorable little voice. Before she stopped herself, she drew Twilight into a hug. The warmth surged through her heart. She willed herself to ignore Twilight's soft heartbeat. As she released the filly, she told her to go inside the cottage and wait for the breezies to return. She made her way back to the Everfree Forest. It was hard to deny that Twilight was cute and precious. Those thoughts made her furious at herself. What was the point of caring for Twilight if the princess was cursed to eternal sleep? The next day at noon, the breezies had a picnic. While they were chattering, they ignored Twilight as the filly played with butterflies. Nightmare Moon was struck by Twilight's innocence. The foal had no idea of the atrocities that Sombra had committed. Neither was Twilight aware of the curse that would befall her on her sixteenth birthday. Nightmare clenched her teeth. She had been innocent once, too trusting and cheerful. And look where it had gotten her. Her old self, who was referred to as Luna, was not too different from Twilight in that aspect. Beside her, Tiberius squeaked. She tossed a berry to him. As Nightmare watched Twilight chase a butterfly closer to the cliff, she said, "The little beast is about to fall off the ledge." Tiberius let out a worried squeak. Nightmare Moon narrowed her eyes, then poured her magic into the cliff. A branch emerged, then caught Twilight in time. It carried her to safety. The possum sent her a quizzical look, and she groaned. "What? I saved her, so everything's alright." For now, she silently added. It didn't mean that she liked Twilight. Did she?
First MeetingThe Everfree Forest was populated with various creatures, from small to large.
Did she?
