Author's Note
This is my first fanfic on this site (and kinda in general). I really like Maud's character and was kinda surprised to see a severe lack of her. I really tried to make sure formatting was as good as it could be here, but if you notice anything with the format that stands out or bugs you, please feel free to let me know and I'll fix it!
The Surprise
Pinkie hopped gleefully around her friend, Twilight. She planned to visit her sister’s cave today in Ponyville Adjacent, and couldn’t contain her excitement.
“Twilight we’re gonna have so so sooo much fun! Are you sure you don’t wanna come with? Two’s great but three is so much better!” Her bouncing only get faster and more energetic. Twilight shook her head and continued sorting the books in her library.
“I’ve told you before Pinkie, I think we all have, that Maud doesn’t exactly click with us as well as you. Plus, she’s your sister, so maybe she might prefer just some sister bonding time?” They were all familiar with Maud by now, and while no one didn’t like her, she wasn’t exactly easy to be around, unless you grew up with her on a rock farm.
"That’s what you guys always say when it comes to Maud. She’s always so good at surprising me, I wanna surprise her for once, and wouldn’t more friends be the bestest surprise ever?” Pinkie Pie ceased her gleeful hopping and placed her hooves on her head with her eyes closed in an attempt to think of a new way to surprise her sister. After a few seconds of grunting and deep thought, she fell to her back and let out a groan. “Come on Twilight you have to help me! You guys know Maud just as well as I do!”
Twilight had to stop herself and really think about what the floorbound pony just said. “Yeah I’m not sure about that one. If you really want to surprise her so bad, why not try something you’d never do? She is your sister after all, and chances are the only way to truly surprise her would be to do something Pinkie Pie would never do. Bringing over your friends to a visit sounds like something she would do if you ask me.” She gave a smirk and magically lifted her friend back to her hooves.
Something Pinkie Pie wouldn’t do. Those words filled her with so many emotions! Fear, excitement, and probably other emotions that would only exist to Pinkie Pie! “Twilight you’re a genius! I’ll do something Pinkie Pie would never do!”
As the alicorn nodded and felt hope that she might be able to go back to her book sorting, a dreadful thought shot in her head. “Just make sure it’s safe and not too much! Think rationally!”
Pinkie’s newfound excitement was immediately crushed. “Aww come on! I had so many ideas and plans! What’s something Pinkie Pie wouldn’t do that’s still within the realm of keeping things rational?” She fell back to the floor, this time with her hooves crossed and a pout. “Let’s see… Something Pinkie Pie wouldn’t do, but it has to be rational… Oh I think I got it!” Pinkie jumped back to her hooves again and grabbed hold of Twilight’s attention, and face. “I’m always so punctual about keeping my parties and visits on the dot, what if I showed up early for my visit? And not like a few seconds or minutes, what about like an hour, we’ll get to spend time with each other much sooner and that means we’ll have more time today to have the best time ever! I wouldn’t even need to bring a gift or present because the gift will be my presence!”
Not exactly rational, but not too irrational either, and even though Pinkie Pie had trouble keeping surprises to herself, she did make sure they happen exactly when they were supposed to. Twilight struggled to pull herself away from the grasp of the pink pony.
“I suppose that’s innocent enough. Are you sure you won’t be walking in on something important or catch her unprepared?”
“Hmm… Maud has always been pretty well prepared for everything, and she told me she had no plans today except for our visit, so I think it’s safe to assume that it’ll be fine. Wait, what time is it?” Looking around for a clock, Pinkie started to panic.
“Oh it’s--”
“I have to get going right away if I want to surprise her! Thank you Twilight! Thank you Spike!” and with all her might she became a blur and bolted out of the library past Spike, who had the door open when trying to enter. He stood there in the doorway, frozen in place unsure of what just occurred.
Pinkie Pie wasn’t sure if she’d ever been more excited to see her sister. She might have been more excited, and she was pretty sure she has been, but there’s also the chance she never has been, and that’s what made it special to her. For such a simple thing, she couldn’t stop thinking about how surprised Maud would be to see her early! It’s like getting to open your birthday presents early, but then you still get to open your birthday presents on time! Or something like that. She wasn’t good at analogies, but just thinking about them made her grin.
She got closer to her sisters cave before realizing there was a small possibility Maud was outside her home, wandering about, or even expecting Pinkie, and that would ruin the surprise! Her cheerful trot became slow and quiet, as she looked all over for her stealthy sister. She was a Pie after all, and Pie’s are crafty, resourceful, and very good at being everywhere and nowhere. Pinkie Pie moved quickly from tree to tree, she wasn’t going to let her surprise be ruined by her sisters surprise, she may be a Pie, but Pinkie Pie was the surprise Pie! She was the master and wouldn’t let herself be outdone.
As she approached the entrance she felt a large amount of relief, and fear. This could either mean two things, Maud was safe and sound in her home like Pinkie expected, or expected Pinkie to be unlike herself and is waiting for a surprise attack. She decided to check the entrance to make sure it was safe, and chucked a nearby pebble threw it. It made a clack when it hit the cave floor, and rested silently after. She thought this would ease her fears, but only made it worse, as this means there’s a chance Maud was extra prepared and knew better than to jump at a mere pebble at her cave entrance.
By this point Pinkie knew that if she were to ever surprise anypony like this again, it most definitely would not be one of her sisters, it’s just too dangerous and risky. The only option she had left was to head straight in, but a new thought popped into her head. Why take the front door? There’s probably a bunch of ways she could enter without trotting on in! Her in progress plans were shooed away after realizing that not using the front door was too much like Pinkie Pie and would be expected by her clever sister. The most efficient way was to walk on in, no disguises, no side entrances, and no loud noises. This was the most rational not-herself way to catch her sister off guard.
She took a deep breath and carefully, normally, and quietly walked into her sisters home. With a cheery, but not too cheery like Pinkie Pie would do, voice, she shouted out, “I hope you’re ready for the best hang out ever from your best sister ever in all of--”
On the hard rock floor of the cavern was Maud, where she knelt in front of Boulder, but her usual frock was not being worn. Wrapped around her body was a similar colored onesie, something that’s normally meant for foals, but big enough for a whole Maud. A violet pacifier, one also normally meant for foals but currently being used by a Maud, filled her mouth. This exact pacifier was dropped from her mouth as she turned to her sister, with the same neutral face she always has. Using the monotonous voice that always accompanies her flat expressions she responded back, “Oh hi Pinkie. You surprised me.”
Despite being successful in her attempts, she felt as if she had lost again. There was nothing more surprising than Maud doing something Maud would never do. Losing all seriousness, the pink mare began giggling uncontrollably, rolling over from being unable to stand before rolling herself over to the other pony. “Alright I give! You win again Maud! There’s no beating you in surprises!”
Maud kept her gaze on her younger sibling and tilted her head at the response. “I haven’t even shown you my surprise yet Pinkie. I found some rose quartz and dug out enough to make a replica of your party cannon.” She gestured over to the other side of the cave, where a dusty blanket covered a cannon shaped object, presumably the rock party cannon. “It’s not functional but it looks pretty. I wasn’t expecting you for another hour, so I’m sorry if I’m not prepared.”
“So, the surprise I thought you surprised me with wasn’t the actual surprise and the surprise you planned to surprise me with was something else not even ready and by surprising you I ruined my surprise by being surprised by something you didn’t plan to surprise me with in the first place? You really are the surprise master!” Pinkie grinned again before coming to a state of confusion. If Maud’s getup wasn’t supposed to be the surprise, then why was she wearing it? She looked to her older sibling, who began unbuttoning the onesie she was wearing. Once enough buttons were undone a white plastic was revealed to be on her rear, and considering the rest of her attire, Pinkie was pretty certain it was a diaper.
“Hey, if my surprise is over there, then what are you wearing?”
Maud continued to get her onesie off, revealing that she was, in fact, in an all white diaper. She looked down at herself before returning the gaze. “It’s a diaper. I thought you worked with foals before. I wasn’t expecting you for another hour so I was relaxing with Boulder.” She grabbed the attire she was wearing and folded them nicely into a nearby dresser. “We can start our hangout early once I get dressed.”
These answers didn’t seem to satisfy her confusion, and only increased her curiosity. She watched as Maud placed her pacifier in the dresser carefully where she had put her onesie. Pinkie shook her head and placed herself in front of Maud.
“That doesn’t really answer my question! Err, it does, but it doesn’t! I know it’s a diaper, but why? Wait, scratch that, you answered that too, let me try again. Why do you do this to relax?”
Pinkie had to be specific with Maud, or else she would give the most basic answers. It was kind of a perk and con of talking with Maud: You will get the answers you ask for, but you will get only the answers you ask for.
“I don’t know. It helps. I suppose I don’t need to, but it helps. When me and Boulder have alone time I dress up like a foal. We spend time reading books about rocks, identifying the rocks in the cave, playing rock fortress, and sometimes we listen to music. It’s actually really relaxing to us.”
Maud reached to the tapes of her diaper to undo them when pink hooves grasped onto hers and stopped her.
“Wait a minute Maud! I’m getting an idea! What if we hung out like this all day!” Pinkie wasn’t sure where she was going with this, but she’s never really seen Maud relax before, or at least like this, and thought it’d be a fun new way to bond.
“You want to hang out with me while I wear a diaper?”
Despite Maud’s tone almost never changing, those close with her can pick up the tiniest bit of emotions she lets out. Maud was well aware that what she does is not normal, and her sister wanting to be with her while she relaxed was perplexing.
“Not just a diaper, but that whole outfit you had going on! I could even join too! We can play foals together and be baby sisters!” Pinkie rode off of the idea that this was going to be fun, even if she wasn’t entirely sure, but if Maud liked it, certainly she must like it too!
The gray mare took a second to think before looking back to her dresser. “You don’t have to Pinkie. I’m really fine doing this kinda thing by myself, it’s not for everypony.”
“But, this is a whole new side of you I want to view! It’s exciting!” The dresser was opened and Pinkie grabbed the stashed outfit and pacifier, tossing them on Maud’s back, and finding another diaper stashed in it. “Please just once?” She begged.
Most ponies who have an obsession like this would do anything to have someone else to play with, but Maud really did see nothing wrong doing it by herself. She didn’t want to upset her sister of course, they did plan to hang out today after all, and gave a small nod.
“If you really want to Pinkie, you can join me. I don’t have any other onesies or pacifiers though, so I hope you’re okay just wearing a diaper.”
As she clutched the padding with a smile, a weird feeling hit her with those words. Was she really going to do this? After some considerations, she realized there really wasn’t any harm in trying. She glanced at Maud casually putting her onesie back on. The way she did it without any embarrassment or shame was really something to marvel at. As much she tried to copy her mannerisms, Pinkie ended up fumbling and blushing as she tried to tape the diaper on her.
After taping the diaper on herself, Pinkie admitted she felt… silly. More silly than usual, like a silly even her friends would be concerned with. The padding was soft, a bit thick, but not as thick as she’d thought. She stood up and looked over herself, and did a little pose towards Maud, appearing how she was when Pinkie first arrived.
“So, how do I look baby sister?”
Maud stared at her sister, now fit with one of her own diapers and responded, “You look like my sister, but in a diaper.”
This response wasn’t exactly what Pinkie expected, in fact it made her feel more silly. “Sooo… What do we do now?”
Maud looked around for things to do, and found a pile of cubed rocks a few feet away. She grabbed one and held it up to show. “I carved these rocks to be building blocks to build towers with. We could do that if you want.”
Blocks were fun! Pinkie Pie used blocks all the time when playing with the cake twins, they made so many towers together, but of course those towers never lasted long. Blocks should be more fun with another pony who can actually communicate.
They spent a few minutes playing Maud’s version of blocks. The rules were simple, but definitely something only Maude could come up with. Each pony has a stack of blocks, and take turns arranging and stacking them. The twist is, the blocks can only be placed on top of similar rock types, as each block was made of a different type of rock. If all players use all of their rock blocks, they win, but if you can’t find a spot for your rock block, or the structure falls over, the game is over. Maud gave a long list of which rock blocks can be placed next to each other, but after the second explanation provided Pinkie with a handout to use. Maud normally considers it cheating, but it was her sisters first time playing, so she didn’t mind.
After starting, they stacked blocks for several minutes in silence. Boulder had trouble reaching the blocks, so he ended up telling Maude which ones to place and where. After the base of their rock structure started to take shape, the pink mare took notice of something and spoke out, “If the goal is to match the rocks with each other, why not just build several towers straight up? Then you don’t have to worry about putting unlike rocks next to each other!”
After setting down her block, Maude examined what they have done so far before giving a response.
“Well then it wouldn’t be fun. Don’t you think it’s more fun if you end up up with a pretty rock castle when playing instead of a few rock pillars? You should know this Pinkie Pie.”
This made perfect sense to the party pony, but why didn’t she know that? This whole new Maud must have really been throwing her off. She looked over her list of rocks to decide which one would go where, and decided now would be the best time to make some small talk with her older baby sister.
“So Maud, what made you start doing this as a way to relax? Was it recent? I never thought wearing diapers and onesies would be your kinda thing.” Finally finding a spot, she made her move.
“Remember when we were little and Marble had bedwetting problems? She was really embarrassed about it, so I offered to wear diapers with her at night to help her feel better. For some reason that stopped Limestone from making fun of her too.” Maud leaned in towards Boulder to hear his move, and after a moment of silence made the move for him and started on her own. “After doing it for so many nights I found a strange comfort in it, So once she stopped wetting the bed I decided to keep wearing them when no one was home. I’d go out and buy my own. Once I went to college I started trying onesies, pacifiers, and toys. I don’t know why it works, I always told myself it was because it made me feel softer than the rocks around me. Your move.”
With a little jump Pinkie grabbed her handout. She couldn’t believe Maud has been doing this for so long without anyone noticing. She grabbed one of her blocks and placed it on top of their forming rock castle.
“How come you never told anyone about--”
“Game over.”
“W-Wait! What does that mean? I--”
“You put granite on marble. Those aren’t matching rock types. Game over.”
Pinkie looked to the blocks she had placed and, sure enough, the game was over. A frown formed and her ears fell down in shame.
“I’m sorry… I wasn’t paying that much attention I guess, I must not be good at blocks then.”
“We still had fun and made a sizable rock castle. Me and Boulder have never played blocks with anyone else before so it was interesting. You can be the one to knock it down if it will make you feel better.”
Looking over the rock block tower, it didn’t take long before a smile appeared and she pushed the build over, causing a satisfying, yet slightly painful noise of a bunch of rocks collapsing over rocks onto a rock floor. Although the act of destroying what she built was thrilling, her attention was brought down to the garment she wore. Something about it just didn’t feel right to her.
“Hey… Maud, it’s okay if I take this off right? You don’t have to undress too and everything! I just, well, how do I--”
“You’re allowed to Pinkie. This thing isn’t for everypony, I’m just excited to be spending time with my little sister, what you wear or partake in doesn’t concern me.”
With a sigh of relief, she began to free her rear from the padding that wasn’t really meant for her in the end. She thought about the day they’ve had so far, how shocked and confused she was at first, but how calm Maud was the entire time. She concluded that she was perfectly okay with Maud like this, because in the end it wasn’t really different than normal Maud, she just looked different, played different, and seemed less tense.
“You were about to ask me why I never told anyone weren’t you.”
“Well, yeah, kinda! You’ve been doing this for so long, and it seems like a big part of you!”
“There’s never been any reason to. I never hid it intentionally, I just prefer doing it by myself, and our family doesn’t really need to know what I do when I’m alone.”
Again, everything Maud said made sense. The shock of being surprised must’ve done something, because every question she had so far was answered in a way that should have been obvious. There was just one last question that’s been bugging her this whole time, and she figured she might as well ask it now.
“So… Do you… Ya know… Use your--”
“Pinkie Pie, do you really want to ask your older sister what she does in her diapers? I’ll answer honestly, but I’m giving you a second chance to think about it.”
“Um… Maybe not… heh, I’ll let that be something you can keep to yourself.” Pinkie leaned over and rubbed Maud’s head. Her older baby sister found her pacifier on the rock floor and stuck it back in her mouth and started putting away the blocks. Pinkie meanwhile just stared at the water that took up a significant portion of the cave Maud called home. While certainly not for her, she could see why it was loved so much.
“Hey Maud… Even though it’s not really my thing… Is it okay if we do this again sometime? You said we no one else really had a reason to know, but now I know, and that’s like, super important to me! Of course it doesn’t have to be all the time! You and Boulder can still have your alone time and we can stall have normal hang outs doing normal things! But just every once in a while maybe possibly because like, I feel like there’s more to you than I could ever imagine and I want to know all-- well, not really all of it, but--”
“You do realize you haven’t even been here more than two hours yet, right? I’m here now, you’re here now, we still have the rest of the day to do things.” Maud had removed her pacifier and was sitting in front of Pinkie, looking up to her. It was silly to think that a game of blocks would last a whole visit, both of them knew this.
“… You’re absolutely right Maud! Why should we waste time talking about the future when we can waste time during the now! You said you had books about rocks you like to read right? Can I see can I see?”
Maud let a small smile escape and nodded. “I would love that.”
