Luna and the Nightmare
The guard’s changed shifts with their solar counterparts as the Sun shined in the sky, and by the look on one of the lunar guard’s face the solar troops figured it was quite the night. “What’s wrong with him?” A solar guard tapped a lunar guard on the shoulder.
“From what I heard, ‘Once in a lifetime chance’.” He replied walking away.
“Once in a lifetime opportunities also happen with Celestia, just a bit more often…”
The solar princess headed for her sister’s chamber. At the doors the guard’s saluted and opened them for her. Princess Celestia took a quick peek in the room and found her sister sound asleep with an empty platter next to her. “Hungry were we.” she chuckled then gently shut the door behind her. “Guards.”
“Yes your Majesty.” They both perked up and saluted.
“Be mindful of what you hear in there.”
Both the guards looked at each other slightly confused at what she meant.
“Last night I felt an unusual presence in her room, and I want to make sure that if it were to return, you and the rest of the guards would be ready.”
“Yes Ma’am!” They both saluted as she walked away, hearing her hoof steps shrink as she went along.
“What does she mean be ready? If anything were in her room last night don’t you think the night princess would have quelled it?” The right guard shrugged, not really being able to rap his mind around it. Even if there was a presence in her room the lunar guards would also have heard it. Too bad they didn’t…
-
Hours after hours passed and not a peep from Luna’s room could be heard and again the night was coming to take over the sky. By now Luna was well awake and like last night she raised the moon and the stars creating a dark aerial blanket that was the sky. Looking at the empty dish on her bed she would feel a little embarrassed if it remained there. “We better return this. We don’t want roaches in our room.” She said quietly to herself. Lifting the dish with her magic while heading for the door she heard a creak come from her wardrobe. “Thy wardrobe is always locked. Who’s in there!?”
-no reply
“Very well…” Her magic opened the wardrobe only to find that only her dresses and night gowns were slightly wrinkled, but no intruder. “It’s been years since we’ve worn these.” She examined the dust on a few dresses and blew it off. “But tonight isn’t the night to be profound.”
Heading for the chamber door she heard another noise but this time it came behind her dresser. Luna put a key in her chamber door and locked it and she did as well with the balcony door. “There is no way out! We know thou shouldn’t be in here!” She called out only to hear her voice echo.
-no reply
Luna kept a watchful eye, waiting for whomever was in her chamber would reveal him or herself to her. “We are not leaving till thou reveals thyself!” she called again into the emptiness.
-
“Hey, you hear something?” One lunar guard asked the other.
“No.” He replied bluntly, not wanting to talk because of how tired he was.
“I think I heard something though.”
“Just your imagination. Close your eyes for a couple seconds to get the sleepies out.” He recommended.
Of course it was about two minutes later when he saw his fellow guard asleep on the job. He smacked him with his hoof which instantly woke him up. “Wh-what! What happened!” He began pointing his spear aimlessly.
“There was a fly on you.”
“I didn’t see it fly away.”
“It was tiny…”
-
There still was no reply to Luna’s command and again she heard another noise, but seemingly it came from the mirror? She began to lift up all her furniture with her magic to find the intruder. “Curses!” Quickly eyeing every corner and shadow in her room starting to think it was maybe a coincidence that she may have forgot to lock her wardrobe, maybe something fell behind the dresser, or how she saw Nightmare’s face instead of hers in the m-.
“Nightmare!” Luna growled.
“Come closer Luna. You don’t want to be rude when talking to yourself!" Her darker half teased.
Luna snorted at her reflection but she did have a point, she was actually talking to herself. “What does thou want! Luna demanded, about to break the mirror with her magic.
“Seven years of bad luck if you shatter this mirror.” She smirked.
“We were banished for a thousand years! Seven years of bad luck will be nothing!” Luna retorted.
“Please, just relax. I’m only here to talk.” She assured with a gentle voice.
Luna didn’t put her guard down she knew how tricky she…or herself could be. “We’re listening.”
“Come closer and I’ll tell you……..closer…….closer……closer…….when I say closer I mean stand right in front of the mirror.” Nightmare agitatedly sneered.
Luna eyed her suspiciously and put one hoof in front of the mirror.
“That’s it, now the rest of you…"
Slowly she put herself directly in front of Nightmare who looked rather un-amused because of how long she took. “Alright, finally! Now you-ahh hoof stamps! You made me forget what I was going to say!”
“We thought we were the same…” Luna used Nightmare’s words against her.
“Neigh, you used your own words against yourself!” She shot back.
Luna came to her senses and realized that this argument was going to lead nowhere. “Can thou get to the point.” She cocked a brow.
“Very well, I remember now.” Nightmare was amused how quick Luna could easily be made impatient. Not to princess like huh?
“It’s come to my attention that we’re growing apart…”
“Pitifully said.” Luna whispered.
“I heard that…” Nightmare bluntly said. “Also I’ve noticed your desire to have a little fun. Last night was rather a good step for you, but more of a great leap for me. The way the guard touched us, sweet Celestia‘s plot! I wish he kept squeezing." Nightmare moaned having saliva drip from her fangs. “But that’s irrelevant. You will have fun and I will be free.”
“No deal! Thou had already caused enough trouble.”
“I never said it was a deal, this is what’s going to come.”
“Never! Thou will never escape again.”
“We’ll see. In the meantime enjoy your few petty hours of ‘fun’. I’ll be seeing you at dawn!”
Nightmare disappeared and Luna only saw her reflection in the mirror. Looking behind it to make sure that this wasn’t some sort of prank something slapped her flank and quickly turned around to see…nothing. In her head though she could hear a distant maniacal laugh of Nightmare, but as quick as she heard it, it disappeared. “She’ll be seeing us at dawn, what’s that supposed to mean? Nightmare hates sunlight.”
-
Celestia awoke having feeling the same presence like the night before. Quickly exiting her room and slightly galloping down the hall, confusing a few guards along the way she made it to her sister’s room. Opening the doors she found Luna’s room empty, she wasn’t in there. She felt something tap her flank and saw her sister looking at her with confused eyes. “Are you okay Luna?”
“We were about to ask thou the same. Thou seems to like peeping in our room.”
“No…”She backed away sheepishly. “Just making sure my little sister was alright.”
“Why wouldn’t we be?” she asked curious to know what was bothering Tia.
“Nothing, just got little jumpy that‘s all. Good night Luna.” She headed back for her chamber.
Through all the talking and going on no pony saw that one of the guards was asleep. “Perfect.” Luna cleared her throat and put her mouth right next to his ear. “WHY ARE THOU NOT AWAKE!!!???” She said again in the royal Canterlot voice.
The guard didn’t wake but instead he started to drool. Luna tapped her hoof against his helmet but still no signs of rising. “Leave the poor thing alone, can’t you see he’s had a long night.” Luna heard Nightmare’s voice in the back of her head again. Luna pointed at a guard whom was trying to hold in a laugh, but by the looks of him he was about to burst. “Thou shall schedule him for the day-shift. She decreed. “Oh, and thou will replace him with another.”
He saluted and carried his sleeping comrade on his back. Though in the sleeping guard’s mind he was having the ride of his life with Nightmare.
-
“Oh WOW! I can’t believe I’m doing this with you.”
“Just wait, it get’s so much better.” Nightmare’s breath touched his neck.
“Really?!” The Guard’s eyes lit like stars.
“Really, and don’t forget to put this on.” Nightmare handed him a thick leather belt. “It’s going to be a wild ride.” She said strapping it on him.
“By Celestia when do we begin?!” The guard grew more excited that he started to sweat.
“Mmmm…NOW!”
“Yeeeeeeaaaaah, WOOOOOHOOHOOHOOO! SWEET CEELSTIA AND BEYOND!!!!!!!!”
“ONE HOOF, TWO HOOFS, NO HOOFS!!!” Adrenaline rushed to his brain and wouldn’t even think of stopping this moment. The twists and turns of it all just made it more and more exciting for him, almost making him pass out.
-Ten minutes later
“That was…that was…I can’t find words to-”
“Shhhh” Nightmare put a hoof to his mouth. “Now that you had what you wanted, I want something in return.”
“Anything!” He quickly blurted out. I mean I would too if she gave me a ride on the most epic rollercoaster ever.
“Good, now put this around your mouth.” She handed him a gag.
“Is this for the ride?” He tied it around his head but not tight enough for him to not speak.
“Not exactly.” Her mane crept around the unwary guard and pulled his limbs revealing his ’soft’ underside. He was thrown against a wall and still her mane held him in place. Nightmare tightened the gag and received a *gulp* from the foalish soldier. “Relax and stay awhile, I mean what stallion wouldn’t want this.” Nightmare said innocently, pulling out a whip.
“ I change my mind!” he mentally panicked.
“Aww, but you already had your slice of fun.” Nightmare walked up to him, shaking her flanks along the way. She got real close to his ear and whispered. “Shouldn’t of fell asleep on the job... NOW SUFFER!!!” She cracked her whip making the guard whimper like a filly.
-
The guard that was carrying him felt tear drops on his back and saw his sleeping companion crying. “That must be one heck of a nightmare.” He murmured continuing to carry him to the barracks.
-
“You have no idea…” Nightmare heard him while whipping his colleague.
-
Morning came quicker than Luna had expected and was ready to deal with what Nightmare had in store for her. She stood in front of the mirror waiting for her darker self, rather than being in bed asleep.
Seconds, minutes, hours had passed and still no sign of Nightmare. Luna began to drift away and lied on the ground. Moments later Luna heard the sound of lightning strike…in her room.?
“Sorry I’m late. I had to punish a naughty guard.” Nightmare grinned.
“It was thy sleeping guard, was it not?”
“Maybe…” Nightmare’s pupils shifted to the upper left of her eye’s.
Luna face hoofed herself and shook her head. “What does thou want. Thou made me stay up till morning.”
“I’m here to discuss my terms…”
“What terms?”
Nightmare didn’t explain but instead struck Luna with her hoof and was sucked into her mind.
Luna shook off the strike but couldn’t help feel tired, not just tired but as if she hadn’t slept in years tired. She collapsed to the floor and everywhere turned darker and darker until black.
