Spike Solaris, proud adoptive son of Ex-Princess Celestia, little brother/number one assistant of Princess Twilight Sparkle, Friendship Ambassador, forger of alliances, and hero of the Crystal Empire sat on his designated place around the committee table. Alongside himself sat several other ponies, a zebra, and two griffons; all of them wearing a formal business vest or coat.
The dragon watched silently, offhandedly straightening his purple business vest, smirking as he did, as the present table members sat in anxious silence. He really couldn’t blame them for acting that way. He had been in the same situation the first couple of months he started working as a consultant, pseudo-adviser, and liaison under the orders of Ms. Harswhinny.
It was mainly a joint idea conjured by Cadance and Shining Armor to employ him in such a manner. With his role as future Royal Advisor and Friendship Ambassador being good and all, they pointed out he had still much to learn. Thankfully, he had time and connections on his side. So when they proposed to send him under royal orders to maintain a direct royal connection to the Equestria Games Board, Twilight had been reluctant.
That is, until the couple had explained that it would not mean he’d leave her side forever, just for a few years at most whilst he trained, learned, and improved the necessary skills he would need to fulfill his future roles at her side. After that explanation, Twilight accepted under the condition of keeping constant letter communication.
To call the start of his new role bumpy would be an understatement. He had been a nervous wreck when he met the Board members, almost chocked himself when they told him he would be positioned under Miss Harshwhinny’s authority, forgot how to speak when they met the next day (he remembered the absolute fool he made of himself during his ‘interpretation’ of the Cloudsdale Anthem), and nearly had a heart attack when she told him she remembered it, too. Clearly.
Spike had honestly expected to be put through a meat grinder, and while the actual workload was no walk through the park, it simply could not compare to the work he was used to performing as Twilight’s confidant and Number One Assistant. Probably the biggest change was how he now had to report and work alongside a team. He was used to doing everything practically solo, so that particular shift had been the toughest one to adapt to. It didn’t take him to figure out that was one the reasons why he had been sent in the first place.
His eyes shifted to Miss Harshwhinny, sitting at the head of the table wearing her trademark business purple coat alongside her collar, magenta polo neck, and earrings. Like usual, her stoic, cold, calculating expression was broken only when she occasionally blinked. Her hooves were busy carrying a small stack of papers and reports while she read page after page. Her blonde mane was, as always, kept in perfect condition as well as her tail; her brilliant orange coat sharing the same care.
Geez, you can cut the tension in the air with a feather, Spike mused to himself.
It was a sight he had grown accustomed to. To be fair to his colleagues, they were amazing creatures, really good at their work, and easy-going, too, most of the time. But whenever Miss Harshwhinny was in the vicinity everyone clamped up. The ambient turned rigid and cold, as if a monster had entered the room and would attack anything that dared to move or make noise.
He couldn’t blame them. Miss Harshwhinny irradiated an overpowering aura of pure, stern professionalism that made it a monumental task to talk to her without stuttering. He knew it quite well, and he had been in their horseshoes for over a little of half a year.
“This report,” Miss Harshwhinny suddenly said, her voice indifferent and stern. Everyone, except for Spike, straightened up in their seats. “Is inadequate. The type of letter is incorrect, the punctuation is horrid, and,” she slammed the table with said offending paper in hoof. For the first time since the meeting began, her eyes moved from the papers to a single stallion near the bottom on the right row. “It lacks the signature! Even a foal would be more careful than you! Take this sorry excuse of a report and make it right!” She said loudly, not quite yelling but with enough force to make the stallion flinch.
“I-I-I don’t know how could I missed it, Miss Harshwhinny!” The stallion ignited his horn taking the paper to himself. “I’ll be sure to personally fix it!” He got up on his hooves, did a small bow, and then bolted out the room like his life depended on it.
“Gleaming Streak,” Miss Harshwhinny called, paying no heed to the departed stallion.
“Y-Yes, M-miss Harhswhinny?” The pegasus mare replied, her wings flaring open.
“Your report is neatly done. Functional. Structured. But the outer lines are too pronounced. Make them one point thinner,” she said passing the paper to one of her assistants standing at her side. “It lacks professionalism. Fix it. Now.”
“Of course, Miss Harshwhinny, right away!” Gleaming Streak said, relieved, before taking the paper from the assistant’s mouth and rushing out to make the corrections.
“Solomon,” Miss Harshwhinny called.
“Y-Yes, Miss Harshwhinny?” The male griffon sitting in front of Spike replied.
The professional mare stared into the red eyes of the griffon, piercing him with her icy blue ones. It wasn’t until Spike did a small polite cough that Solomon noticed the mare had a stretched hoof with a paper in hand. Solomon chirped in embarrassment before taking the paper.
“Rewrite it entirely. The Board would first use it as toilet paper than deign it with a quick glance!” Miss Harshwhinny practically growled.
The poor griffon jolted from his seat and with a ‘whoosh’, he was gone.
Spike couldn’t hold back a short-lived chuckle at the display.
“Is something wrong, Mister Solaris?” Harshwhinny asked raising an unamused eyebrow.
“Nothing, Miss Harshwhinny, the room is a bit chilly, is all,” Spike replied looking back at her.
“How amusing,” Harshwhinny replied with dry humor, her expression unchanged. “A dragon feeling cold. What a comedian. There must be a joke in there, I’m sure.”
“What can I say? I’m no Pinkie Pie, but I love making ponies smile regardless!” He said with a proud smile.
Mouths went agape all across the table, but the mare at the head merely sighed. “Quite. Everycreature else, your work is in order. You may return to your duties. As for you, Mister Solaris,” she began giving a folder to an assistant. “Here is the information Princess Cadance and Prince Shining Armor required. Be sure to tell them I hope everything is in order for my arrival next week to oversee the preparations.”
Spike bowed his head as he took a hold of the folder the assistant delivered to him. Then, he set the folder of fire alongside a scroll of his own. The ashes of both documents flew out a nearby window and soon they were gone.
Everycreature rose from their seats, the meeting now adjourned. No one moved until Miss Harshwhinny rose to her hooves and was followed by her assistants. No one dared to breathe until she was gone and her hoofsteps could no longer be heard.
Than everyone let out a relieved sighed.
“I can’t believe you just did that, Spike!” The zebra mare shoved Spike’s side with her rump.
“Did what?” Spike asked with a little smirk.
“Don’t you dare play coy with me, Mr. Crazy! You just sassed Miss Ice Queen Harshwhinny!” The zebra pointed out.
Spike tilted his head looking at the mare directly to her eyes. It’s so nice to finally be at eye level with ponies! Spike thought cheerfully for a moment.
After his molt, he thought he’d stay a runt, not that he minded his low stature that much, but he had been relieved beyond himself when one morning he noticed he had grown just a little bit. And then a little bit more the week after. And then the week after that. Until he now stood naturally at the average height of an adult pony.
As a very welcome added bonus, he had lost most of his rounded for along with his lingering baby fat. More than that, he had actually gained quite a bit of muscle. Nothing impressive, but still noticeable.
“I didn’t sass her, I was playing along. There is a difference,” Spike clarified.
“Who cares about differences. It’s like you have a freaking death wish!” A stallion called. “You do not backtalk to the Miss Harshwhinny!”
Spike sighed. “Again, I was playing along. I didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Whatever!” A unicorn mare yelled. “You still went along with it! What if she fires you over it!? What if she fires any of us over it!? Have you thought about that!?”
“Yeah! Have you no idea how ruthless Miss Harshwhinny is? Oh, wait, you do! You’ve been with us for almost seven months and you know how quick she eats through assistants, secretaries, and staff in general!” The remaining griffon pointed out gaining several nods around the table.
Spike frowned crossing his arms. “She’s our boss, not a monster. You do know that, right?”
“Is there a difference? Tell me, have you ever seen her smile?” The zebra asked.
“Always,” Spike said, half a second later he smiled seeing the shocked expressions on his colleagues. “She even smirked half a millimeter after my joke, didn’t you see?”
“I hope you choke on your flames, you damn sack of scales!” A stallion pegasus said stomping his hoof.
“Funny, I thought dragons lacked a gag reflex, but hey, what do I know, right?” Spike replied making the stallion neigh in frustration. He then turned to the zebra. “See? That was me sassing Meadows.”
The zebra groaned. “Aren’t you afraid of her, Spike? She can have your tail on a silver platter if she wants. She’s already eaten through five assistants in six months! Not to mention Solomon and Streak are new to the Overseer staff!”
“Why should he be afraid? He has royalty on his back, he knows he can get away with it,” an earth pony mare scoffed.
“First of all, my family and friends have nothing to do with my attitude. And second, why should I be afraid of Miss Harshwhinny? Yeah, she’s a very strict boss, and maybe some of her high standards are… difficult. But that doesn’t mean she’s malicious, spiteful, or petty,” Spike cleared out.
“She made Crystal Glimmer cry before she fired the poor mare for Luna’s sake!” The pegasus countered. “Harshwhinny is a near heartless monster that sucks all the fun and good of any room she is in!”
“Yeah, she’s a total killjoy. Did you know she’s never attended a single department party? I’m thankful she hasn’t. No wonder she’s single despite being thirty-two. No stallion alive would be able to stand her for more than a few hours,” the griffon added, again, gaining a series of nods.
“Ha! As if, she’s married to her job. I bet she doesn’t even know what a date is,” an earth pony stallion added.
Spike was about to reply when a chime coming from the room’s clock made itself present. The dragon closed his eyes and swallowed the ire that had formed in his stomach. With a smoky sigh, he began to walk to the door. “This is getting us nowhere. Let’s just get back to work,” he opened the door but stood by the frame as he turned around to see the rest of his colleagues. “Do try to remember that Miss Harshwhinny is more than our boss, okay?”
The dragon closed the door and sighed. He wanted to tell them the reason Harshwhinny had fired Crystal Glimmer was because the mare had been caught red-hoofed forging documents that would’ve put the entire department in peril. There were other things he wanted to tell them, but he couldn’t. And he would not, at least not in the foreseeable future.
As he made his way to his office, he noticed a pair of very attractive and young mares, more or less around his age, were waiting on the chairs outside of it. Their uniforms told him enough.
“Miss Jolt. Miss Flash. Welcome. How may I help you?” Spike asked politely as the two athletic mares.
“We were wondering about some of the rules and regulations for the upcoming games. And we were told to come here for further information,” Jolt explained.
“Of course. If you’d be so kind as to follow me?” Spike gestured with an arm and a small bow that earned a soft giggle from the mares. As Spike went through the usual initial speech and began guiding the two athletes for a three-minute-long trip around the main area of the department showcasing a few important events on the past, current sponsors, and the history of the Games themselves.
As he was about to finish and head into his office to properly deal with the two mares behind him, he noticed Miss Harshwhinny inspecting a now revised paper from Gleaming Streak. Her eyes shifted for half a second, maybe less, from the paper to him, their gazes meeting. He knew he didn’t imagine the momentary frown or that particular glint in her eyes before she looked away.
Spike smiled seeing the mare leave passing the paper to one of her assistants.
“Now, ladies, if you could follow me into my office I’ll be able to answer all your questions appropriately.”

By the time emerged from his office, the department was practically empty. He had to go through a mountain of paperwork and a few more meetings, but now he was done for the day just a bit after working hours. He saw a few members of the staff either finishing up or already setting everything up for the next day.
He stretched a little to ease his tension before he closed the door of his office and headed towards the exit. He was about to make it out the entrance when he spotted Miss Harshwhinny leaving her office, this time unescorted by her assistants. He moved to the side and waited as the mare slowly turned to the exit. When she saw him her posture straightened a little and began to walk a pace faster than her usual speed.
She exited first with Spike following her a moment later. When they made it to the elevator they stood in silence. Moments later the gates opened revealing two occupants from another department above them. They entered wordlessly and without complaint.
“Hard day, Miss Harshwhinny?” A pony clad in a fancy suit said with courtesy.
“What day isn’t? But it was productive,” she replied flatly.
“Haha! Right you are, right you are. Everything looking fine for the upcoming Equestria Games? All up to schedule, I hope.”
“We are ahead of schedule, in fact. Your concern is welcome but unmerited: I always perform my work diligently and with professionalism.”
“Of course, of curse. I did not intend to question your efficiency, Miss Hasrshwhinny. You are the best in your field of work, everypony knows that. Still, I’m quite happy to hear everything is fine with your department. Mine? Well, not so great!” The stallion said with good humor. His companion merely rolled his eyes. “Tell me, what is your secret?”
“To be diligent and make sure everyone under me is doing their job properly. That is all,” Harshwhinny replied.
The stallion nodded as the doors opened up again. “I’m sure the Board will be more than pleased with your progress, Miss Harshwhinny.”
“Mhmm,” the mare replied. The remaining of the walk was spent in silence until after they checked out at the reception. Once they left the building, the stallion and his companion waved at the dragon and mare before boarding a carriage.
“Have a good day, Miss Harshwhinny,” Spike said politely before unfolding his wings and taking off.
“Likewise, Mister Solaris,” she said in the same manner.
Spike flew to his modest apartment. He had to beg to his mother, Celestia, to let him stay in that apartment and not in a more luxurious house. It wouldn’t be right and it wouldn’t fit him. He could fit all he needed inside his small apartment anyways.
But he wasn’t planning on staying for the night. In fact, he had no intention of staying in his apartment for the next two days. It was Friday and that meant a few couple of hours of work by the morrow and a free Sunday. Which, in turn, meant that he could finally spend some time with his lovely mare.
“Ha… my lovely mare. Damn, that sounds so good,” Spike chuckled grabbing only a fresh coat, his toothbrush, a towel, and a set of keys hidden below his Power Ponies comics.
With all he needed in hand, he locked his apartment and once again took flight. After several minutes and a near-crash with a sleepy pegasus, Spike made it to his destination: a small balcony. Landing softly, he pulled out his keys and unlocked the doors. Instantly, he was met with a slightly burnt smell and a panicking voice.
Smirking devilishly, Spike entered the much larger, fancy apartment. Tiptoeing his way to the source of the smell, he found Miss Harshwhinny herself out of her clothing, standing on her hind legs, and a ladle in her mouth stirring something in a cooking pot. At the same time, a mess laid around her: spoons, frying pans, two torn recipe magazines, something that looked like rice laying on the ground, and stains of vegetables everywhere.
However, what caught his attention the most was her backside. Arrggghh, why is cooking so darn complicated!?” Harshwhinny complained, spitting out the ladle and moving to a beeping microwave. “Greeeeat… burned, again!” She said pulling out a set of carbon crip quesadillas. “And you!”
She tossed the quesadillas to the trash and turned to point an accusatory hoof at a large sealed cooking pot. “The recipe said you had to be done ten minutes ago! Why aren’t you boiling yet!? ...And you better taste good,” Harshwhinny turned to Spike. “Hello, Spike,” then again she turned to the cooking pot she was working on. “Now, where was that recipe again?” She asked inspecting the discarded pages from the magazines.
“I think you forgot to set the flame to high, Amber,” Spike said raising the flame of the sealed cooking pot himself.
Harshwhinny froze for three solid seconds before she looked to Spike. “Spike!” She jumped back stepping on a spoon and sending it flying towards Spike. The dragon caught the spoon and took a sip from the pot she had been working on first.
“Blergh,” he exclaimed lolling out the tip of his tongue. He then turned to face Amber. “This is almost edible, love. You’ve been practicing, haven’t yo--uuff!”
Spike was cut off as the mare launched herself at him, wrapping her forelegs around his neck and hugging him close. Standing just a couple of inches taller than her, Spike hugged her back, mindful of his claws and his strength.
“You’re early,” she said softly against his ear fin.
“I couldn’t wait to get my claws on you, Amber,” Spike replied as they slowly nuzzled the other. Sniffing against her mane, the dragon placed a chaste kiss on her neck. “Hey, are you using the shampoo I got you?”
Amber blushed nodding. “Yeah, it made wonders for my coat and mane, Spikey.”
“Hey, my mare deserves it,” Spike replied tracing a hand against her back.
Amber pulled back, her face flush red. “Y-Your… mare?”
Shit… I mean… it would be amazing… but I think it’s too early for it…, Spike thought as he tried to mumble out an explanation. “W-Well, you’re my marefriend, so… maybe… if you want… you can be my mare in the future?” Spike smiled, then his pupils shrank into pinpricks as what he had just said hit him.
Did I just seriously proposed to her like that!? UGGHHHHH! Romance, thine enemy is I, Spike…., Spike thought hanging his head in shame until he heard the beautiful and melodic song of Amber echoing through the kitchen. “Amber? Y-You’re not mad?”
“Of course not, you dolt!” She said in between laughs, trying her best to calm down and failing miserably. “T-That was terrible!”
“Please, no…”
“‘You can be my mare in the future?’ What kind of proposal is that!?” Amber managed to say, wheezing.
“Celestia kill me now…”
Spike stood there, waiting for Amber Harshwhinny, his manfriend and the mare he had fallen in love with, to regain enough control of herself and stop laughing. His face was as red as an apple, and he could not do anything to hide or dimish his shame. Worst of all, he couldn’t stop smiling whilst hearing his marefriend laugh wholeheartedly.
True, the usually abrasive, cold, professional, and proper mare, currently at the verge of a laughter induced coma, leaning against him was a mare that commanded respect and was feared by ninety-nine percent of those that work with her, he had seen this side of her openly.
The two first months working under her direct command had been tough, and he once had similar opinions, though not as brash or offensive, as his colleagues about the mare, he had noticed something… off about Miss Harshwhinny. It was at the end of the second month when he thanked all the experience he had gained for being surrounded by so many mares all his life. Being able to notice subtle body movements or how her posture shifted depending on how she felt was a blessing.
And a curse.
Beneath all that abrasive, direct, almost uncaring attitude laid a mare. Simple as that. Even he had forgotten that Miss Harshwhinny was a mare. And once he understood that single, solitary fact, his entire focus shifted to her and noticed so many wonderful, amazing things about the mare that by the time he realized it, he had fallen in love with her.
He still didn’t know, when standing alone in the elevator after a grueling over-shift, which factor made him ask her on a date. Blind hope? Stupidity? Bravery? He did not know. But at this point, he did not care. She had been shocked and left without a reply. The next day she called him to her office to tell him she accepted his offer.
Spike stopped his train of thought when he noticed her laughter began to die down and shift to something else. He pulled her away enough to see she was crying, her tears coming from a mixture of laughter and something he could not quite describe.
“Amber? Is something wrong? Did I do something wrong?” He asked gently, his shame buried and forgotten.
“You can be an idiot when you set your mind on it, Mister The Dragon,” she sniffled looking at his eyes. “Look at you… you… you…,” she sniffled again. “You could do so much better than I.”
Spike blinked one. Twice. Thrice. Then he hollered a single burst of laughter. “HA! Who’s being terrible now, Amber dear? How can I possibly do anything better than what I want and need?” Spike asked licking away a few of her lingering tears as they fell from her cheeks.
“I’m twelve years older than you, Spike. I’m not a young mare anymore,” Amber carried on all the while Spike lovingly caressed her sides, back, and flanks. “I know what everypony says about me behind my back, and they are mostly right. I spent so many years solely focused on my career and my job I never sought out any sort of,” she nuzzled him. “Romantic outlet. And now I’m past my prime. You could easily charm any younger mare, like those two from earlier...”
Spike kissed her chin, his upper lips brushing against her lower ones. “I suppose I could do it, but I kinda have a thing for older, mature, sexy mares. And past your prime? Pffft, you know how mirrors work, Amber!” He said before taking a firm hold of her rump that made her squeak in surprise. “Half the mares in Equestria would kill to have your figure. I know how diligent you are with your figure, love. Those yoga classes are my favorite time of the week,” he said giving her cheeks a nice, firm squeeze. He sighed in bliss; enjoying the feeling of his fingers sinking into her supple flesh again. “As for what other creatures say about you? Who cares about what they think or say behind your back? The efficiency and quality of your work speaks for itself, oh great and mighty miss Head of the Equestria Games and Chief Inspector.”
Amber chuckled first then sniffled. “You can be such a flattering moron, Scales. Plus, that doesn’t change the fact I’m much older than you, Spike. And I’m not getting any younger. I already have wrinkles and crows feet for pony’s sake!”
“The product of hard work and stress; nothing some cream can’t fix! As for your age? Then that means you’ll age like fine vintage wine!”
“But I’m a horrible marefriend! I was the one who insisted to keep out relationship a secret!”
“Only until you are sure this is what you want,” he said squeezing her flanks again. “I’m working with you, technically speaking, and not under you, Amber. Plus, I’m just a liaison: no rules are broken as far as I know.”
“Our first dates were a complete disaster!”
“Hard to believe a single spider could cause so much mayhem, huh?” Spike replied making Amber blush fiercely.
“B-but I’m so cold, and negative, and overbearing, and mean, and taxing, and plain!”
“Just shut up, you stubborn mare you,” Spike said before silencing any further protest with a kiss. Amber fought back for a moment before melting into it. After half a minute their lips parted. “You’re charming, unique, earnest, tenacious, hardworking, diligent, professional~,” he said that last word as he sniffed deeply and loudly against her neck and chest fluff; making the mare in his arms quake and shudder in delight. “You yourself know it’s true. And not only that, you’re funny, intelligent, dedicated, clumsy, silly, and beautiful… and a huuuuuge nerd. Don’t think I haven’t seen that O&O game set you keep in your closet,” Spike said, looking into his marefriend’s eyes and her blushing face.
“You’re the second most amazing pony I’ve ever met, Amber Harshwinny,” Spike said after a few seconds of silence. “I love everything about you. And yes, we’ve been together for a little over three months, and we’ve known each other since I was a hatchling… but I want… I hope you can be my mare once we are sure, truly sure, that is what we want.”
Amber smiled and gave Spike a chaste kiss. “Thank you, Spikey,” she kissed him again. “I love everything about you, too. You’re funny and smart and handsome and strong. Like me, you’re also assiduous and professional… when you want to be, loyal, honest, and kind. Generous and intuitive. The Council of Friendship really raised you into a formidable dragon, didn’t they?” Now it was Spike’s turn to blush. “Now, what was that about me being second place?”
Spike shrugged. “Hey, what can I say? It’s a pretty stiff competition going against the literal Princess of Friendship, Element of Magic, and multi-savior of Equestria. But hey, she’s up there just by a little bit of difference.”
“Hmmm, and acceptable answer, I suppose. But now that you mention it,” she kissed his snout before nuzzling his neck. “You’re pretty stiff yourself~”
Spike blushed, eyes opening wide, before leaning to the side and looking down to see his painfully hard erection nestled between her crotchtits. Then, she suddenly pulled away. Spike was confused by her action and even more so when she rushed to the oven and turned everything off. Then, she darted out of the kitchen.

Spike sighed. Smiling, he did as told and went to the living room. He took a seat on the large, fluffy sofa and waited. His stay didn’t last for more than two minutes as he heard her door open up.

Spike obeyed once again, but the moment he entered the room and laid his eyes upon the figure resting form of his marefriend wearing a set of red lingerie; hugging firmly her flesh and fur, Spike froze.
“D-Do you like?” Amber asked shyly.
