Fall of Equestria: Blacklight
Meeting the townsfolk and getting to know the sentient virus
Previous ChapterNext Chapter"Hey! That stallion that saved you guys is here!" Yelled Rainbow Dash from her position in the air. Princess Celestia and Luna looked at each other before running to the front doors along with some of the other Mane 6 with Spike following them. Princess Celestia was the one to open the door, looking down at the pony that had single handedly killed all the Caribou that had invaded Ponyville.
"So, you gonna let me in or what?" Alex asked Celestia as he stared up at her with a semi-bored look, almost as if he hadn't recently been in a death defying battle.
"We will, but first we have some questions." Luna told the stallion as she came up beside her sister. Alex sighed and made a 'get on with it' motion with a roll of his hand. "First, what are you?" Alex thought on it for a bit before saying.
"Well, I was human. But now, I'm not." He said as he looked down at his hands.
"Human? But if you aren't a human, whatever that is, or a pony, then what are you?" Rainbow asked for her position above them.
"I am a sentient virus known as Blacklight." They all seemed to back away in worry from that. "Oh come on, if I had wanted to infect you, I would have done so already. Besides, I'm not contagious."
"So this… Blacklight virus. What does it do exactly?" The purple princess asked which made me stop and think for a second.
"Results may… vary, depending on how your infected. If by accident, like by a drop of blood infecting a cut or getting inside your body, you'll most likely die, become a monster, or do both. But if on purpose, then you'll most likely become like me, a Blacklight Evolved. And what we can do… again, varies."
"Varies how?" Luna asked with scrutiny.
"Well, all of us become almost unkillable, by time and by other sources. Our greatest weaknesses being other being infected with the Blacklight virus, fire, and very strong acids. But with gaining new DNA, fire and acid weaknesses are no longer a problem." Alex said while covering himself with a quite intimidating set of armor. We all jumped back a bit, seeing his new form. All but the Rainbow Dash that is.
"That, is, awesome! But doesn't it slow you down?"
"Yes and no. Yes it can slow down our traveling speed, but in combat, it gives us less of a worry of being open to attack and lets us attack without worrying for our own health. Which is also helped by, what some would say, ridiculous healing factor. Like so." He said while reverting back and transforming one of his arms into a massive blade.
'He's not gonna do what I think he's about to do, is he?' All the ponies thought in sync.
Alex then put his other arm out in front of him and without care, sliced his entire arm off. The severed arm fell to the floor with a thump as he made a brand new arm grow from the hole where his previous arm had been. "That, is both awesome, and sickening… I love it!" Rainbow exclaimed again.
"In short, Blacklight Evolved are an unstoppable weapon of mass destruction. So be thankful that I just don't go ahead and kill you lot as well. But killing you would be pointless so I don't."
"So what's the point of slaughtering hundreds of Caribou and saving us?" Celestia asked with a steeled resolve.
"I get to play Anti-hero and do something good for someone else." That… was not something any of them were expecting. Least of all Celestia and Luna. "I mean, how else am I supposed to use these powers without looking like a murderous psychopath that only craves to kill all life that stands in my way?"
Rainbow was surprisingly the first one to answer. "I… guess that makes sense?" Rainbow said with mild confusion, looking at her friends.
"Anyway," Alex says waving it off. "next question please."
"Er, right. Umm, how can you fly?" Rainbow asked him.
"That is a much easier answer, I don't fly. I glide." They all waited for him to give an explanation to that but when none came he deadpanned. "Ugh, fine. I glide by decreasing the density of my biomass while expulsing small burst of biomass for thrust while in midair."
"And can this ejected biomass infect others?" Again, I shake my head.
"No, the stuff I eject is mostly dead cells. The only thing harmful about them is if it gets in your eyes. But again, that'll only cause mild eye irritation." Talking to each other a bit, we come up with another question.
"Where do you come from?" Luna asked as Alex winced.
"Uh, a place that used to be full of healthy people, but now an infected war zone." He said rubbing the back of his head.
"And how did it come to be like that?" Luna asked as began to glare.
"While there are many points of blame, it was mostly because of two things. Gentek and Blackwatch. The whole story is a bit long so I'll shorten it as much as I can. First thing you must know though, the Blacklight Virus is actually a strain of virus that was made from the original strain known as the Redlight Virus."
"Wait, your kind took a virus and made a new one from it?" I could only nod.
"Yes, no be quiet. I'm about to tell the story. Ahem," Alex cleared his throat before starting. "The Redlight Virus, also known as DX-1118 A, was made by a military group called Blackwatch. It's original purpose was to be used as a Bio-weapon. Blackwatch created an entire town and filled with real people. They would infect mother's to be to hopefully find the right host and after three years, they did in a woman called Elizabeth Green. She gave birth to a son that was Code Named, Pariah. The whole purpose of the fake town was to make the perfect lifeform. What they actually did however, was make the perfect bio-weapon. One that can't be stopped. Elizabeth and the child were taken from the town which was then destroyed. Hundreds of innocent lives, gone with a single detonation. Elizabeth was kept for experimentation because her body was constantly making new strains of the virus. Now we move onto Gentek, a company that worked with Blackwatch. One of the researchers there was tasked with making a new strain of the virus, which he did. This was known as DX-1118 D, the Blacklight Virus. He tried to expose Gentek and Blackwatch for their many illegal practices but ended up cornered in a train station. Here, he unleashed the virus on a large city that was on a small island. One thing after another and now I have the virus inside me."
They just looked at Alex in a scared type of awe. "Wow, that's just… wow." Rainbow said as she scratched the back of her head.
"Yeah, that doesn't even begin to describe it." Alex said as he crossed his arms.
"But, how do you know all of this?" Celestia asked.
"Because, all the memories of the things I consume, are added among mine. One of the perks and curses of the Blacklight Virus."
"Seems to me this 'virus' is more like a superpower giver." Rainbow chuckled.
"One would think. But by getting it, you become less of yourself. You become immortal, you can't die. Takes the meaning out of 'make the most of your life' when it can't end, huh?" Rainbow winces and looks away, scratching her arm.
"Well, it is getting late. Come inside, we'll talk more about this tomorrow." Celestia said as she opened the door for Alex.IHe nodded and walked inside, following after them until they got to the throne room. Which now looked like a refugee camp. Small tents, fires, and families all around looking like the world has ended. The sight would've tugged at anyone's heartstrings.
Looking around Alex saw the very open roof. Pouring a significant amount of biomass into his arm, he reached up and began to fill in the giant hole. All of us watched him as he did this, not sure to be thankful or scared. When he finished he staggered a bit. Why though, the ponies didn't know. "Hey, you alright there partner?"
Asked Applejack who had been with the group that had greeted Alex. "Yeah, just a bit low on Biomass. Probably gonna need one of those monsters out in the Everfree for more."
"Bio-what now?" The orange mare asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Biomass is the total mass of organisms in a given area or volume… you have no idea what I said, don't you?" She gives Alex a sheepish smile which he waves off. "Eh, figured. Your race isn't as technologically driven as my race was."
"Excuse me?" She said as got an annoyed tone to her voice.
"No offense, just that our races had to evolve differently. You all had magic so there wasn't a point to growing in your technological prowess. Mine had no magic and had to rely on good old human ingenuity to survive. What was once impossible became possible as we evolved our technology. Need to be somewhere over seas in a rush? Take a plane. Wanna talk to someone without traveling to their home? Use a phone. Humans have used their intelligence and curiosity to do things once thought the realm of impossibility. Heck, we wanted to go to the moon because we wanted to know what it was like up there. Give us a few years and bam, first man on the moon alive and comes back, alive."
He had gathered a few listeners as he rested a bit. "That's amazing! What else has your race accomplished?" Twilight asked with amazement.
"Another thing for another day. Now if you'll excuse me." He said as he jumped to a wall and ran up it till he reached the ceiling made of biomass. He then seemed to make a hammock out of biomass and rested inside it.
"Again, wow. That guy is so awesome!" Rainbow squealed in a fangirlish sort of way.
"And incredibly dangerous. I don't think anything we have, spell or otherwise, can kill him. If we were to do so, we would have to destroy every cell in his body, including his constructs. But seeing how they work… the task seems impossible." Luna said as she stared up at the bio-hammock.
"I'm just thankful he has a protective spirit." Celestia said, doing the same as her sister. "Though I do hope Cadance and Shining Armor are alright."
"Peace sister, I doubt the Caribou have anything powerful enough to get past the Crystal Heart's barrier." Luna said as she took Celestia's hand in her own. Celestia smiled and nuzzled her sister.
"True, but if they were daring enough to try and attack Canterlot, then they knew that they would have to fight us at the same time. So does that mean they are daring enough to attack the Crystal Empire?" Celestia could only hope that they weren't.
The night passed with Luna going from dream to dream, consoling foals and ponies alike. Telling them that help was coming and that they just needed to hold on till help did arrive. But Luna knew she was spitting lies. She had no idea how long it would take for Alex to get to them, or if it would be too late.
But she then stumbled upon a conscious that, unlike the others, was not induced by the fear of the Caribou. Looking into it, she was bombarded by hundreds of deathly screams of pain and agony as a single soul that was inside just stood, drinking it all in. She pushed her way inside till she got to that pony, but when she saw his face, she gasped.
It wasn't a pony, it was a being like Alex! A human if she remembered correctly. He had his head down, crying heavy trails of tears as he couldn't move, thick biomass holding his limbs together. Luna tried to banish the dream and was thankful she was successful. Kneeling down, she used her magic to dissolve the dream biomass cuffs.
"Peace young human, your nightmare is no more." After a few seconds, the human opened up his eyes.
"P- Princess Luna?! What are you doing here?! W- where am I?!" Asked the human as he backed away, looking around him in fright.
"Calm young one, calm." Luna said, not taking into account that this human knew her name. After a bit he did, but still looked at her cautiously. "Good, good. You are in your dream. I have dispelled your nightmare. But please, why were you dreaming of such a thing?"
He looked at her, confused, before looking at himself, recognition showing seconds afterwards. "Oh, heh heh. Right. Well, you see. Those weren't nightmares, but memories. But they aren't my own. The memories of the ones I have killed. All the Caribou who have been consumed by me." Luna looked astonished. Was this another Blacklight Virus holder like Alex was?
Before she could ask any further, the walls began to crumble until Luna was expelled from the dream as the dreamer woke up. Coincidentally, this also caused Luna to wake up. She sat up in her sister's old room, semi restored. Only the mattress had been replaced with twos sleeping bag and she had used her magic to blow away all the dust in the room.
"Who was that human?" Luna asked herself as she got up from the sleeping bag, stretching her body from the uncomfortable spot on the floor. Perhaps she should ask Alex to make a hammock for her. Luna soon slapped herself away from that. 'No, he is not a servant nor is he under our rule. Besides, my ponies would need that much more than me.'
Luna looked to the pony in the other sleeping bag, which was almost too small for the occupant inside it. But that was only because her sister had curled up inside it, tucking her legs against her chest. Luna would have giggled a little at the sight had the timing been any different. Luna heard a small thump as something outside landed.
Luna grabbed a small dagger she had kept next to her and began to inch towards the balcony. When she got there, she looked up to see a familiar human. Alex stood on the roof of the tower she and her sister rested in, which was the highest point in the castle. He was looking at the stars, a frown on his face. "Fucking hell, why did I dream of her." He mumbled under his breath as he looked up.
"Dream of who?" Luna asked as she jumped onto the roof, her wings giving her a boost in height. Alex jumped and almost slashed her to ribbons with one of his giant claws. The tips a hair's width from her eyes. When he saw who it was he took them away. He gave her a stern look before saying.
"Don't scare me like that. Ever. I was jumpy enough back on my world. I don't want to accidentally turn you into ribbons or a fine paste." Alex said as he looked at her.
"I apologize, I didn't mean to do such a thing." Luna said as she tried to get her heart under control. She had seen her life flash before her eyes when those claws were coming at her. She had not lead the most fulfilling of lives from what she saw.
"Thank you. I didn't mean to be so harsh. It's just… all of this has been pretty insane. One day I'm living a normal life and now I'm in a new world in the middle of an invasion and I seem to be the only one capable of stopping it. Heh, guess I really do have the world on my shoulders now, don't I?" He chuckled solemnly, no humor in his voice.
Luna just looked at him sadly and a tad bit confused, not knowing what he meant with the last sentence. "I… see. I can't say I have been what you have been through but I can empathize with being in a new world." Luna said as she stood next to Alex.
"... How so?" Alex asked after a few seconds.
"You see, I had been banished to the moon for a 1,000 years. When I had come back and was cleansed by the elements, I was in a world that was familiar yet… alien. New technology, new speech patterns, etc. But to everypony else, I was the alien in a normal world." Alex nodded, completely quiet. Luna raised her hand and put it on his shoulder.
"If you ever want to vent your feelings, I am always open. And if not me, then my sister would also be happy to listen to you." Alex smiled a bit before he did an action that surprised Luna. He hugged her. She could hear him sobbing a bit but no tears were coming from his. Luna just closed her eyes and returned the hug, softly rubbing his back.
There the two stayed, not knowing they had been watched by a white alicorn who knew exactly what Alex was feeling.
Luna and Alex had stayed in their embrace for about 5 minutes until they separated, going back to their own sleeping places but unable to sleep. Though it would have been pointless as the sun would soon need to be raised. Luna and Celestia did their duties of moving the two celestial bodies, though Celestia held Luna back from going downstairs for a second.
"Sister, I want to talk to you about Alex." Celestia said, a small amount of regret in her eyes.
"What about him sister?" Luna asked with her head cocked to the side. Celestia took a breath before answering.
"I… I had over heard the conversation you and Alex had last night. I didn't mean to, I promise, but I couldn't help but overhear what the two of you were talking about." Luna nodded, knowing where her sister was going with this.
"I know Tia, I know. He is a civilian that is forced to be a soldier. His state of mind is fragile and I fear what will happen to his psyche when all of this is done." Luna said as she looked down at the throne room and the new biomass ceiling. Celestia nodded, having the exact same fears.
"He will need friends to help him through all of this. And know that I am happy you offered both of us as a way for him to vent what is on his mind. But being friends with us will not be enough. Luckily, I can think of at least six ponies and a dragon who would happily be his friend." Luna giggled a little.
"Rainbow Dash has certainly found him to be interesting. Though Twilight might forget herself in her study of him. Applejack certainly seems like somepony he could get along with though. But dear Fluttershy seems to be way too fearful of him, I do hope that changes though. Pinkie Pie can get along with anypony, though she seems more likely of angering Alex than relaxing him."
"How come?" Celestia asked with her head tilted to the side.
"Alex seems to be quick to anger, and might find Pinkie's antics more frustrating than funny. I recommend keeping them apart for the time being." Celestia nodded, agreeing with her sister's logic.
"And what of Rarity?" Celestia asked, kinda proud of her sister that she was able to see possible friendships for Alex to have.
"She… might find his clothing interesting, either in a bad way or a good way. But interacting with him personally, I don't have that good of an idea. She can either anger him cause of her own tendency to let her mind roam, or find him charming to the point she might take a more… romantic interest in him and will try to pursue him with the intent of making him her coltfriend. Or something else completely different will happen. I guess you could say that Rarity is the wild card." Luna giggled again. Celestia joined her, knowing her sister was right.
"Come on Luna, let's go see our ponies." Celestia opened the door but was surprised when something lightly hit her breast. She looked down to see a wide eyed Alex, his fist on her large breast. He quickly took it away and rubbed the back of his head.
"Sorry! Sorry! I didn't mean to do that!" He said as if he had just commited a crime.
"Relax Alex, it was an accident. Though not an unwelcome one." Celestia said the last sentence under her breath, surprising even herself for saying that. Luna saw the awkwardness and decided to change subjects.
"Why have you come up here Alex?" Luna asked him.
"Huh? Oh, Right. Breakfast is ready and I want to discuss some plans I have." He said turning and walking down the steps.
"Plans? I wasn't aware you had any before now." Luna said as she and Celestia followed him.
"Yeah, I figured the breast, I mean best! Uh, way to stop the Caribou is for me to go with others like me."
"But there aren't any like you, so how would someone like you go with you?" Celestia asked him, thoroughly confused.
"Easy, I make more like me. Meaning that I need to infect others on purpose. But I am not going to force anyone to join me, and you won't either, alright? I want volunteers who are willing to help me." Alex said rubbing his chin.
"You want to infect our subjects!?" Celestia said as she glared at Alex.
"Yes and no. I don't want to but I have to. I can't do everything by myself you know. And as of right now I can only see one pony willing to do so and honestly, I don't think she's thinking it through." The two rulers nodded, knowing exactly who he was talking about.
The three got to the bottom of the stairs as they noticed some ponies were just waking up while others were making breakfast, the smell affecting the two princesses quite a lot. "Heh, figured you two were hungry." Alex said as he looked around. "You two go eat, I'm going to help fortify this place so it's a bit more livable." He said as he walked towards a broken window. He then jumped out said window, careful not to disturb any of the castle's occupants.
"He is certainly acting a lot different than yesterday." Luna pointed out. Celestia couldn't help but agree.
