Vinyl Scratch sat on her couch, staring off into the scenery outside her window as she pondered about her music career. She was already at the top of the game, with almost all her albums being hits and chart toppers, but she wants to expand it. After all, she had been doing electronic music for quite a long time, why not experiment with other styles of music?
She remembered seeing Pinkie rap before. The astonishment on everypony’s faces when they found out that she could rap very well! She also remembered asking Pinkie. “Why not pursue a music career? I’m sure you can release a hit in no time with your skills!” Vinyl had gushed as she grabbed Pinkie by her shoulder. The answer that she was given is still not understood by many till this day. Something about her mom getting eaten by cupcakes.
Vinyl leaned forward and scratched her mane thoughtfully. If she combined her style of music with hip hop, she’s sure that it will be a one-of-a-kind in equestria. Heck, she figured that she could even earn some big coins with that. She thought of the biggest money maker in the music industry, countess coloratura. Everypony relates to her soulful music, the lyrics that depicts her heartbreaks and loss. The failures that lead to success.
If she wants to succeed in music, she got to make content that resonates with everypony.
What kind of subject should her music be? Vinyl is not as good in this field, as electronic music only requires sounds thrown together to please ponies’ ears. Writing lyrics that inspire is a totally different game.
Maybe she could write about drugs? Yeah, really inspiring. Rap about colts? That’s kinda dumb and overdone not gonna lie. Suicide? Now that’s a good one.
These days the news is cramped with ponies that attempted suicide or had did it. The mayor had even appeared on the last episode, urging ponies to call the suicide prevention hotline. The numbers “1-800-273-8255” might be etched into Vinyl’s mind forever as she had seen it countless times. She could recite it backwards whenever somepony requested to, although why would somepony even do that.
The next step is counting the number of existing songs about suicide. So far, nopony had written a song about suicide if Vinyl remembered correctly.
“A unique topic paired with a unique vibe, awesome,” Vinyl said to herself as she rose from her seat, “Now time to find Pinkie.”
Before Vinyl’s hoof could reach the door to knock, the door swung open to reveal Pinkie’s face. “Sooooo, you wanna learn how to rap from me?” Pinkie asked with a wide grin.
“How did you know?”
“Just a hunch. Come right in!”
Pinkie lead Vinyl into the house. She reached her hoof out and pressed on a button. Without warning, the floor underneath them split open and both ponies fell into the basement below, Vinyl falling right into a chair screaming uncontrollably while Pinkie landed in front of a whiteboard.
“A little warning next time,” Vinyl grumbled, taking off her shades to accustom to the darkness.
“So, rapping! It isn’t just about talking very fast and going with the beat, it’s about the rhyme and the lyrics! Although there are some type of rap that has free rhyming, nopony listens to those! First lesson we shall be doing is poetic skills,” Pinkie pulled out a marker from her mane and wrote ‘buck’ on the whiteboard, “Now, what word rhyme with buck?”
“Firetruck,” Vinyl replied.
“Not the answer i was looking for, but that can do too. Rhyming is simply finding another word that ends with the same sound. Lyrics that rhyme is much more suitable for rap songs.” Pinkie rambled on.
“Now, you want to do a song about suicide? Don’t ask me how I know, but I know. Let’s try to write lyrics for that!”

Pinkie glanced at the words.
“I don’t get it. If this is a song about preventing suicide, why do you write about wanting to die?” Pinkie questioned.
“Reverse-reverse psychology,” Vinyl simply stated.
Pinkie nodded her head in understanding. Impressed, she turned to Vinyl.
“That was good. After you write the rap, you gotta learn how to rap the rap! Come,” Pinkie dragged Vinyl through a wall and somehow ended up in a studio.
“How... never mind.”
“You need to control your breathing Vinyl, literally everypony makes that mistake when they rap!” Pinkie’s voice rang out.
“Ugh, that’s the twenty-third time...”
The familiar clicks and clacks of the rap beat could be heard as the DJ next worked on the tune. She wants to include some instrument that is not usually used in hip hop, that fits the sad mood of the song and goes well with the pace.
“This song is going to be awesome!” Pinkie beamed. Vinyl smiled and balanced her shades on her nose.
“Yeah, I make awesome songs.”
Two months later, reporters and lots of ponies can be seen gathering at the streets, jostling at each other as Vinyl Scratch tries to push her way through the crowd of fans. Microphones are being pushed towards her mouth as she continued leading through the sea of ponies. The screams and shouting of those following Vinyl could be heard through the cacophony of normal Ponyville life.
Finally, Vinyl had managed to achieve the impossible task of returning to her home and plops down onto her couch with a sigh. Taking off her shades, she switched on the television.
“The newest release by DJ PON-3, titled 1-800-273-8255, had set a new lead in music, for its the first song ever to mix hip hop with electronic music! From the eyes-watering lyrics to the catchy beat, this song has all the elements required to make a hit! Furthermore the suicide prevention hotline had received 500% more phone calls from ponies that need advice from suicide!” The reporter pony eyed the camera and smiled, “DJ PON-3 thus had helped our community through a song.”
“Sooooo, do you feel satisfied Vinyl?” Pinkie’s head appeared from the ceiling and stretched down to level with the DJ’s head.
“Yeah,” she replied, “It’s cool to help ponies in need.”
“Recite the suicide prevention hotline backwards,” Pinkie challenged.
