My black heart
Welcome to Ponyville
Load Full StoryWelcome to Ponyville
Life is an odd thing, not really something anyone or anything can figure out completely. As a matter of fact, most go through their entire lives without understanding even a percentage of it. We have no control over when we’re born, where we’re born or even how we’re born. No control of our race, appearance or mental stability. It could be a gift of bless and relife to not have such a borden like that, or it could be a curse and damned punishment towards us even before we are made into this or any world.
Even when we are born into this world, we are only ever feed more questions for our starving bodies, souls and minds. Questions that might and may never be answered, and only leads to more and more unanswered prayers and pleads that makes one wonder what the meaning of an answer even is. Sometimes these questions are nothing more than a little nuisance, but other times it could be the force that drives our very lives.
When we grow the amount of knowledge we gain influence us, for better or worse. Knowledge itself changes and grows with time, becoming either corrupted or purified when influenced by the people or creatures making and experiencing them. Our minds crave knowledge, as it is the one thing more important and addictive to us than food, water or even in some cases our very lives.
You're probably wondering what all this means or why i’m saying all these things, well lets just say I have been given a life that isn’t what most would call worthwhile. You see, I am what can only be described as a creature of ...well, not really “pure” fear, but fear nonetheless. Fear comes from not knowing or understanding something, forcing us to avert our eyes and pretend to have no memory of that which inflicts fear in us in the first place.
If only it were that simple for me, but you see my fear is one of total isolation, yet mixed with the anxiety of being needed by all and hated by all. Since the very beginning of my start in life, my memories have been nothing but questions being unanswered either from me not acknowledging them or from the world not being able to answer me. But are my questions even in need of an answer? Am I worthy of asking anything to anyone? Those very things haunt my very thoughts each and every second of each and every day of every single year of my life.
I live in a world where I am the only one of my kind, and for most of my young youth I didn’t even know the name of my very species. As a matter of fact, I didn’t know anything about myself, I have no memory of my life before I was five years old. That was also the time I was adopted into a loving family, and the few ponies in all of Equestria that didn’t find me to be an abomination or an omen for a tragic event. Needless to say, I love being a Sparkle.
My full name is Nacht Sparkle, I have no idea what “Nacht” was supposed to mean but my adoptive mother explained that it was on a piece of paper attached to the blanket that I was wrapped inside of. I was unconscious when they found me on their doorstep, having absolutely no memory of how I got there, who I was or anything for that matter. I was taken to a local hospital, which resulted in most of the doctors being freaked out by the weird and strange creature presented to them. That was my very first taste of what else to come, a whole lifetime of Ponies everywhere looking at me with looks of fear, disgust or even simply confusion.
After a few days of medical care, I was diagnosed with a few symptoms. The biggest one was my memory, it was pretty bad and I could forget things at the drop of a hat. My soon to be sister asked her parents what they were going to do with me, as nobody knew where I came from or where my birth parents were. The very second the doctor said anything about an orphanage, Twilight Velvet, my new mother refused and decided that for the time being they could take care of me.
Many of the doctors and lawyers said that was a bad idea, however they soon changed their minds when their ruler and Twilight’s mentor Princess Celestia approved for the Sparkle family to adopt me into their family unit. Everyone was surprised by the princess's decision, but Twilight and Shining Armor were excited to have a new baby brother.
Twilight was a super smart filly at the time, being around ten years old but already regarded as one of the smartest ponies in Celestia’s school. Shining Armor is the oldest being six years older than Twilight was studying and trying to be a part of the Royal Guard, the Ponies responsible for protecting Canterlot and the Princess herself. I considered following his lead and joining the guard, but the glory of a knight in shining armor never really reflected the real me.
I was more of a writer anyway, making up stories and reading books with my older sister almost everyday. I never really had many friends, most of everypony thought I was a total freak and avoided me like if I was a Changeling or a scary Dragon. Speaking of dragons, I had gained an unofficial nephew in the form of a purple hatchling named Spike. Twilight hatched the little guy from an egg when she was trying out for Celestia’s school, and since that day he had been her cute little assistant.
Anyway it has been ten years since that day, and I am going to a place where I might get to feel things I have never felt before in my very life. For better or worse, I am going to open up my heart and see wither the world heals it or stabs it through with a blade.
At the train station of Canterlot stood a teen waiting with a few cases and bags, and unlike many of the different types of Ponies who were currently staring at him, he wasn’t like them. He was a strange stature who stood on two legs, and looked like an ape without fur and more height to him. He was a little taller than five feet and slightly muscular, which was shown even when he wore his black leather jacket. With grey circuit stripes on the waist and arms, and a small chain connecting the collar section. The jacket was opened up to reveal a white shirt with a grey gear imprinted on it, the fabric also showed off his muscular frame. The teen wore black leather pants with the same circuit designs, with colored blue and closer to his thighs and lower legs. Around his waist were a chain, and also a spiked black belt with the buckle being themed after a skull. Around his neck was a black collar, also spiked and matching his rough and punk appearance. He wore dark grey slippers, with blue stripes starting on the front.
His eyes were a bright blue, and oddly enough had a yellow tint instead of being simply white. He had black hair and eyebrows. With his hairstyle being a long ponytail and having silver strikes all around. The ponytail was tied with dark red string, and he used gel to make his hair harder and more difficult to mess up. On his lower lip and ears are piercings, the final touch to his gothic appearance.
This was none other than Nacht Sparkle, who was on his way to move in with his older sister Twilight Sparkle. It has been a month since she moved away and started living in some small town called Ponyville, and Nacht decided he had more than enough of Canterlot and these damn snubs to last a lifetime. His parents were sad about him leaving, but Nacht missed his sister and wanted nothing more to do with this stupid city anymore.
He had decided to move in with Twilight for both an excuse to leave Canterlot, but also to keep an eye on her since Ponyville didn’t seem to be the safest place in Equestria. Nacht almost had a heart attack after learning about Nightmare Moon returning, not to mention his own sister being the element of magic. It was a lot to take in, plus the introduction of Celestia’s younger sister Princess Luna had caused a stir in Canterlot.
Nacht looked all around him and up at a clock attached to the wall of the station, his train should've been here a few hours ago. Just his luck, he picks the day the train company is going haywire to move in with his older sister. He probably should've accepted the Princess’s offer for him to fly in a royal carriage to Ponyville, but thanks to his large fear of heights that was declines and he was stuck waiting in this dump. Knowing his sister she was probably not going to like him being late, especially since she planned to introduce her younger brother to her first ever friends.
“Come on already, how long will this damn train take to get here!” I grumbled out loud, causing a few bystanders to look at me shocked and nervously back away. he have an iron rule he never broke, it was actually what he based his whole personality. He didn’t like to wait, or keep others waiting. It was a simple little motto, but something that kept him from getting distracted or incomplete a task.
After what felt like years the conductor shouted out a call that Nacht’s train was ready to board, good timing because any longer and he would lose his mind. He picked up his suitcases and marched right to the train, the pony collecting tickets stopped to look at him with a startled stare. But he composed himself and took Nacht’s ticket, allowing the young man to board the train and sit at the place closests to the entrance. He placed all his luggage on one side, while he sat to the other. He stared right out the window as the train sounded off and began moving, Nacht was finally getting away from everything. He was happy to be able to see his sister and Spike again, and was excited to finally get a fresh start. If this town could give Twilight of all ponies friends, then it could do the same for him.
“Wonder what Twilight’s friends are like, wonder if their going to freak out about me like everyone else?” he asked himself, he really wanted to make a good first impression for these mares and absolutely didn’t want to embarrass Twilight in any way possible. He would miss his parents like crazy, but it was time to leave the old nest and spread his wings.
Nacht was about to get the surprise of a lifetime when he gets to Twilight’s home, she was going to make sure of it.
It wasn’t a piece of cake heading for Twilight’s home, and Nacht wasn’t going to be able to avoid getting spotted since her place was right in the middle of town. Guess these ponies liked reading, maybe that’s another reason his older sister moved to Ponyville. Nacht knew he was going to need to get used to ponies staring at him when he got there, what else would ponies do when faced with someone who was a completely different species from their own. He had grown to accept this by now, he had already gained his fair share from living in Canterlot for all his life.
He took a deep breath and walked forward, heading straight for the large tree that was Twilight’s home. Ponyville was a nice place if he was being honest, so many friendly ponies and fillies running, playing and going about their daily lives. He liked the fillies more than the adults, they actually found his appearance interesting instead of just disturbing. Nacht said hello to a few ponies on his way over here, and while they were startled by his body at first they reframed from looking rude and welcomed him to their town.
Nacht finally reached the tree and knocked on the door, after waiting a few moments the door opened up and Nacht was soon pulled into the house by the aura of pink magic. Once inside he was hugged by none other than his older sister Twilight Sparkle, who seemed very happy to see her little brother.
She was a Unicorn mare, twenty years old and the average height of ponies her age. Her fur was pale violet, while her mane were dark blue with a pink and purple flash shot through it. The same went for her tail, which was moving back and forth as she kept hugging her little bro. On her flank was her Cutie Mark, a pink star with several smaller, white stars around. It reflected her natural gift perfectly, her ability to use magic well beyond the average Unicorn.
“Oh Nacht, it’s so good to see you again! How was your trip here? Meet anybody nice?” she asked as she finally allowed her brother to breath as she let him go from her crushing hug, she really cared for Nacht and loved him dearly. Twilight was always there for Nacht when he needed him, he was one of the only people she could consider a friend before she arrived in Ponyville. He had thanked the stars Twilight finally made some real friends, that pony had been smothered in her books for too long.
“It was good Twilight, everyone here seems pretty nice.” He told his older sister with a smile, when made her feel relieved. Nacht has a really bad habit of getting into fights with people, even gaining a few scars that were one of the biggest reasons he wore his long sleeved jacket most of the time. However he broke from his train of thoughts after noticing they weren't alone. “Who is this?” he asked, gesturing to the other mare in the room.
She was an Earth pony, meaning she had neither wings or a horn. Her fur was orange, while her mane were blonde and tied tied near the end with a red ribbon along with her tail. She had yellow freckles, was wearing a cowboy hat and emerald green eyes. Her Cutie Mark were three red apples, making Nacht guess this was that farmer pony Twilight told him about in her letters.
“Well howdy there Nacht, Names Applejack. Pleasure to meet ya!” the farm pony greeted holding a hoof out, Nacht took it and was immediately being shaken all around from her strong grip. This mare was strong for being smaller than himself, as Nacht was typically taller than most ponies besides for the Princess. Twilight just giggled at the scene, seeing her little brother’s wobbly face just adorable. After roughly a full minute Applejack stopped giving him the shake, and allowed him to get his hand back. Nacht wobbled on his feet for a little, before regaining his composure.
“Nice to meet you too, i’m guessing your Applejack right? Twilight has told me a lot about you and her other friends.” Nacht said with a smile, and while it didn’t show he was very shocked. This pony didn’t react to his appearance at all, not making a comment or even flinching. He could only assume Twilight had told all her friends about him, and even showed them some of their family photos ahead of time.
Twilight seemed happy her little brother was getting along with her friend already, and he had just arrived. “Nacht, I would like to formally greet you to Applejack. She and her family run the farm just outside of town, and are known far out for their juicy apples.” his older sister explained, earning a smile and blush from the orange mare.
“Well shucks Twilight, no need to be giving me your praise now.” remarked Applejack with a friendly smile, although still very flattered by her friend’s words. While all this was going on Nacht looked all around, noticing there was someone missing from this happy moment.
“Where’s Spike?” he asked with a raised eyebrow, setting all his belongings down on the ground. He would have figured the little drake about come see him show up, as they had a very good uncle-nephew relationship. Twilight and the little dragon didn’t make it official, but as far as Nacht knew that small purple dragon was a Sparkle and her kid.
“He’s out doing some errands for the Princess, but he should be back in a few weeks.” Twilight explained, understanding the look of frustration on her little bro’s face. Those two are extremely close, Nacht truly loved the little dragon like a little brother.
“I guess if Celestia asked for it, then it couldn’t be helped. Still, it sucks I couldn’t see the little guy sooner.” Nacht grunted, understanding the situation but still feeling pissed about it. “So anyway Twilight, where should I place all my things?” he asked, wanted to unpack right away and relax from his long journey. Traveling was such a pain in the ass sometimes, it always made him tired and cranky all the time.
“Right up the stairs Nacht, your bed is on the left right across from mine. I hope you don’t mind sharing a bedroom with me while we renovate the supply room for you.” Twilight said as Nacht shook his head and grabbed all his luggage, he walked across the room and up the stairs. Twilight and Applejack were left alone while he unpacked, perfect timing as Applejack needed to talk with her friend a little.
“So are you going to tell him Twilight?” the orange mare asked her friend, a concerned look on her face. They have both wanted to tell the Unicorn’s brother something after he arrived, but only when he had settled right in of course.
“I will Applejack, don’t worry. I just hope he takes the news well, I would hate for this to ruin his time living in Ponyville with me.” Twilight responded while looking to the stairs, watching for when Nacht would return.
“If you say so sugarcube, but why do you want to tell your brother before our friends?” the Earth Pony asked. She and Twilight had a secret only they knew about, even Spike or their friends were clueless to it. But that made this even stranger for the mare, as Nacht seemed like the guy they should tell after the others.
Twilight understood her friend’s feelings, but she was sure of her actions. “Nacht was always the one I told everything to, even more than my older brother or Shining Armor.” she explained, as best she could anyway.
“If you say so Twilight, just don’t go keeping this from your little brother too long. If my experience with Applebloom a taught me anything, it’s keep secrets from your kin ain’t a good idea.” her friend explained, knowing how tricky little siblings were to deal with.
Before they could continue their discussion, Nacht returned after unpacking everything. It was mostly just his art supplies and clothes anyway, he didn’t really like collecting things he didn’t really need. He had managed to place everything in his dresser or closet, which Twilight was generous enough to get for him even before arriving. But after all that time on the train he wanted nothing more than to relax and take a breather, he would need the energy for starting his new life in Ponyville.
He stood in front of the two mares, not really paying much attention to their conversation. “So, what we gonna do for lunch?” Nacht asked as his stomach grumbled, he hadn’t eaten anything the whole way here. The only thing they were serving on that train was hay burgers and grass fries, and he wanted none of either. Nacht didn’t really eat most of the foods ponies would eat, mostly he would just eat sweets and pasta. That resulted in him needing to exercise almost daily just to keep from turning into a fat tub of lard.
Twilight gave her little brother a sweet smile. “I made your favorite chocolate filled cupcakes, and Applejack brought over her apple cream cakes.” the pony told her younger sibling, making his eyes expand and mouth water. It was no secret Nacht had a sweet tooth, or a couple dozen of them. Twilight had a feeling he and Pinkiepie would get along great.
The group soon went right over to the kitchen for their meal, Applejack smiled at the sweet display going on in front of her. Nacht was really excited about the sugary sweets, and Twilight laughed at how adorable her little brother was acting. The baby talk was prompting him to complain, telling his older sister he is not a kid anymore.
The group was now shown sitting at the dining table, Applejack was passing around her apple cakes while Twilight did the same for her chocolatey goods. Nacht grabbed both sweets as quickly as possible, as soon as they got on his plate the sooner they filled his opened jaw. It was than the apple pony saw the fangs that filled Nacht’s mouth, she was surprised by those chompers.
“Sweet hay Nacht, you got some sharp looking teeth there!” the farm pony announced, prompting the sweets eating machine to shortly stop his consumption of cakes to answer the pony.
“Ya, the ponies at my old school used to give me the nickname “shark” for how they looked. Their pretty tough also, I could bite right through a tin can.” the young man replied before going back to eating up the sweets, his older sister giggled and levitated a napkin and cleaned his face for him. “So um, when is Spike coming?” he asked, causing Applejack to raise an eyebrow in confusion.
“What do ya mean, Twilight already said the little guy would be back in a couple of weeks.” the farm pony said, earning a shocked look on Nacht’s face. He looked red in the face, he really sucked at remembering stuff.
“Nacht has some memory problems Applejack, especially with his short term memory.” Twilight explained, making her friend look guilty for not knowing that. Nacht didn’t think it was a big deal, his memory had been a problem he just learned to deal with all his life.
“Don’t worry about it, I could forget my own name if Twilight didn’t remind me of it.” The young man said with a grin, causing both older mares to giggle from his response. But there was something on Nacht’s mind he wanted to get out, he overheard the mares discussion while he was unpacking upstairs. “By the way Twilight, what was that secret you and Applejack wanted to tell me?” he asked, making both ponies turn their heads over to him in shock.
“W..what do you mean Nacht?” the purple pony muttered, sweating a little from her little brother’s words. But Nacht wasn’t going to play this game with the older mare, he knew when his sister was keeping something from him and he wouldn’t have any of it.
“I heard what you and Applejack were saying Twilight, now spill the beans!” Nacht said with his arms crossed and a smirk, his face still having some frosting and chocolate on it. Applejack looked towards Twilight, looks like later become sooner.
“Go ahead Twi, he needs to know.” the farm pony said, holding her friend’s hoof. Twilight took a deep breath and looked at her brother, this was going to be tough. She didn’t want to have to tell Nacht all this before he got settled in, but he needed to know this before her friends did.
“I wanted to tell you a secret me and Applejack have been keeping for a few weeks, something none of our other friends or Spike knows about.” Twilight explained to her younger sibling, making him look nervous. Twilight never looked this serious before, there were times she was close but every one of those situations ended kinda badley.
“What is it Twilight, your giving me a heart attack here?” warned Nacht, actually feeling his chest in a little bit of pain. Although to be completely honest with himself, he could be from him eating several cupcakes and cakes all at once.
Twilight took a deep breath, and finally spoke out. “Me and Applejack…..we started dating, and I want you to help us break the news to our friends and family.” she revealed the truth, making Nacht’s eyes threaten to burst out and his whole world freezing in time.
“......what?” was all he could say.
