(Prologue)
(Prologue)
As I walked inside the game convention I began to get a little nervous. This was my first time going to one of these things alone, but I never get the chance because I’m always busy playing video games or working at my crappy job. But when I was free I decided to move everything aside just to visit one of these.
To be honest I’m not too excited with my life. I’ve always had a Warrior's Heart. Ever since I was little and watch the movie 300, I've wanted to be a spartan. Even though I realize that they weren’t as cool as they were in the movie. I still want to be one of the best soldiers in history.
yes I know that they’re slavers and some of the young boys die at a very young age, but the thrill of battle has always fascinated me to no end. Unfortunately for me I live in the modern age. There’s probably other places where I can press blades with another person. But those aren’t real Warriors facing off.
I am also a brony. I don’t tend to watch the show a lot, instead I mostly read fanfics. I have collected a few favourites over the years but it saddens me that the fandom is getting smaller than what it once was.
I’m still a little upset that I got to miss the big hype as I only joined the fandom at season five and had to do a lot of catching up.
Right! The Story! Sorry, I got sidetracked.
I was dressed as Alexios The Eagle Bearer. Around me I had Achilles armour along with the blade of Nicolaos and the minotaurs axe. Finally I had the bow of Paris. The only thing I was missing was Leonidas' broken spear.
As I walked around the convention one particular stall caught my eye. The item I was looking for was perfectly placed in the centre of the table with no other items around it. I begin to walk towards the stall cautiously as they didn’t seem to be a vendor.
As I reach the stall I could feel the blade calling out to me, as if it wanted me to touch it.
“Greetings Young man are you interested in my stall.” I looked up to notice a new vendor has arrived. I jumped as it was like he appeared out of nowhere. He wore a hoodie around his face so I was unable to see him up close. All of this felt a little weird to me I usually have a feeling about these things.
“Greetings merchant. I am interested in your items. But I must ask, are you, ‘The Merchant’ everyone is talking about online.” I asked him cautiously.
“Let’s say I was.” he said without hesitation. “How would you react.”
We spent time looking at each other as I thought over my options. On one hand I’m leaving everything behind, but on the other I don’t have much to leave.
“Let’s say I’m interested in going to a New World, can I ask for a few things?” I askwhen I made up my mind.
“Aye, you may. So tell me what is it you want in your world.” He had said, and even though I couldn’t see it, I knew he was grinning like a madman.
“I would like multiple sets of armour each able to give me different abilities and special usages in different areas. Have all of them be from Assassin's Creed odyssey and upgrade them a bit and get rid of the more useless abilities.” I stated first.
“That I can do, but let’s make this more interesting, you must earn your sets of armour. I won’t tell you how, but I know you can do it.” I nodded my head, sounded fair enough.
“Next I would love to be fully levelled along with my gear and abilities and my overpowered attacks that cost two adrenaline bars. Thanks to my minotaur axe. I would also like knowledge on my weaponry and abilities. Oh and don’t forget to give me an inventory.” I stated second.
“I was planning on doing that anyway, but two things. First I will only allow you to have a maximum of 12 and four of them must be hunter abilities, just like the game. Second knowledge comes at a price, what are you wearing to sacrifice.” He said as he grabbed the broken spare and began to play with the end of it, with his right index finger.
“I will be willing to sacrifice my mental state of death.” I said as I looked at him straight in the face.
“A smart move, while it will make your adventures easier, sacrificing one’s human connection to death makes them a little less human. Are you willing to put your mental state through so much stress?” He said with a cock of his head.
“Yes.” I answered. “A true spartan Will see death countless times before their even 20 along with their first kill. I seem to miss my mark. And as for the abilities, i’ll take, Ghost Arrow, reign of destruction, Multi shot and predator shot For my hunter abilities. Battlecry of Ares, Second wind, spartan kick and Shield break for my warrior abilities. Shadow of Nyx, Vanish, Slow time and rush assassination for my assassination abilities.”
“Very well and you shall have all abilities that you have just mentioned. Is there anything else?” he said.
“Two more things. First I would like an ability from a different game. Revenge from for honour as a very special ability, I expected the cost to be very expensive.” I said while crossing my arms.
“Very well you will have the ability, Revenge but it will cost you all eight adrenaline bars. It will also last 30 seconds. Is this acceptable?” He asked. I could only nod my head in excitement.
“As for my last question, it’s mainly about the new world. All I care about is a lot of mercenary work.”
“Are you sure that’s all you want? What about location or story?” He asked me what I had simply said “surprise me!“
“Very well, buy what items you wish.” He said which I simply responded by grabbing the spear and tossing him my wallet that had a few hundred in it. He looked inside making sure that there was enough before closing it and pocketing the rest. “Congratulations on your new world, Alexios!”
I smiled to myself. ‘I like the sound of that.’ Was the last thing I thought before blacking out.
xxxxxxxxxx
After what felt like an eternity I could hear the sounds of birds chirping. It had brought a smile to my face but my body felt weird. Then I remembered everything that happened with the merchant. I shoot up looking around only to notice that I was in a thick forest with Little sunlight.
I looked at my surroundings and noticed that everything was far more colourful. I also felt like my senses have been upgraded as I can hear a beautiful river flowing down the stream a little ways from here.
As I looked at myself I noticed that in between the armour, that had now become real, was my skin that looked a little bit darker than I remembered. I took off my helmet and looked at its reflection to see myself. I was Alexios!
“I can’t believe it!.. Haha I even sound like him! By the gods!” I shouted with excitement. Slowly I stood up to my full height and instantly noticed how much bigger my body was. I had muscles that could shatter cannons. As if in a muscle memory I begin to take off the armour, noticing my body and… The countless battle scars.
Something about the made me feel uneasy. As I touched one I was greeted by memory of someone striking me with a blade. I took a step back in shock but noticed that it was only a memory.
“My price for knowledge.” I stated to myself as I slowly begin to touch every single scar. Pain, anger, fear… excitement… all clash together in a swirl of chaos.
Tears began to roll down my face as I noticed every single battle my body has been through, and I was reliving. Next came the scream of the people that I killed. Their face is contorted between anger, sadness and fear. Countless bodies both Spartan and Athenean, bandits and mercenaries, male and female.
Then came the memories of the Cultists. Everything they did to Alexios… no everything they did to me and my family! I am Alexios now!
I allowed all of the emotions to run through my body never fearing the next emotion that would come up. I should’ve feared the last…
The body of a child against A stone pillar crossed my mind.
“Phoibe…” she was the last one of my memories as I collapsed to the ground with tears on the ground. Her death did shake me in the game but not enough to cry. When she died I only felt more anger at the court and promised I would kill every last one.
But now that I experience these memories I can only remember sadness.
It took me a while to collect myself. I now know that I am at least prepared for the challenges ahead. And I don’t think I will ever know if becoming Alexios was the greatest idea I have ever had… but there’s no turning back now. I am Alexius the greatest mercenary the world will ever see!
