One More Night
Smolder sat by the edge of a cliff overlooking the lava pits of her Homeland, the Dragonlands. Everything about the seemingly desolate place gives Smolder a sense of security and peace. To her, the ideal relaxation involves smashing boulders, lava diving and eating gems. But that isn't the case nowadays. Ever since attending the School of Friendship, she started to take part in more softer and relaxing ways of spending time with friends.
From craft time, to playing board games, and her favorite and well kept secret. Tea time. But out of all the things she discovered, her favorite would be a certain teal colored student with pink fin like mane. That student is Ocellus, sent by King Thorax to study in the same school.
Unknown to Ocellus, Smolder has been developing a crush on her, and what perfect excuse to confess her feelings for her by inviting her to stay in the Dragonlands. Yet all those time, she failed to muster the strength she needed to confess her feelings for Ocellus. With the Summer Break almost over, she's been thinking if she should do it now or never.
"Smolder?" A familiar voice asked.
She turned around to see Ocellus with her small luggage, "Ocellus? What's with the luggage?"
"Well, you see Smolder, I kinda need to get going early. It's a week before the Summer Break comes to a halt and I need to prepare tomorrow."
Her eyes widened, she can't let Ocellus leave. Especially with the last chance she has at confessing her feelings.
"Smolder? Are you alright?"
"Y-Yeah! Duh, I'm fine!" Ocellus raised an eyebrow.
"Yeah, not really. I'm kinda... *Incomprehensible muttering*"
"What was that?" Ocellus asked.
"I-I said uh... *More incomprehensible muttering*"
"I don't quite understand you, Smolder."
Smolder then snapped and raised her voice. "I said I want you to stay for one more night!" She yelled, putting a palm on her mouth after yelling.
Ocellus tilted her head, to which Smolder cleared her throat. "I-I mean, if it's alright Ocellus, uh... Can you please just give me one more night? Like, to stay with me in the Dragonlands..." She fidgeted her fingers.
After a few moments of silence, Ocellus chuckled and smiled. "Of course, Smolder! I can do that!"
Relief filled her heart. Now she has the chance to confess her feelings to Ocellus.
... "And that's how it happened. I asked her to stay with me for one more night in the hopes that I'll have the courage to show my mushy side and tell my feelings for her." Smolder finished explaining to Dragonlord Ember.
"Huh. I didn't expect you to be the loving mushy type, Smolder." Ember then gave her a gem to chew on, "but why are you shy on telling her? There's nothing wrong for a tough dragon such as ourselves to confess our feelings of love to another dragon or creature."
"That's just it! I fear that Ocellus will reject me, or worse, make fun of me for being so mushy! I-I don't want to show that dragons are weak and cuddly in that way! I care about our reputation! That's why I'm here asking you for advice..."
Ember placed her hand on Smolder's shoulder, and smiles. "Smolder, there is no need to worry. What matters the most..." She taps Smolder's chest, "is what's in the heart."
Smolder looked at Ember and smiled. "Thanks, Dragonlord Ember."
"No problem. Now go on and and tell her your feelings! No buts!" Ember said
After Ember's pep talk, Smolder returned to her cave home. It consists of basic furnitures, posters from Ponyville, a bowl of gems, her lava surfboard, a kitchenette and many other stuff lying around. In fact, Smolder's room is a mess.
"Here you go Smolder! Tea for two!" Ocellus happily chirped.
"Thanks, Ocellus." She sat down and took her cup of tea, gingerly sipping it. Ocellus sat down as well, carefully sipping her tea in sync with Smolder.
"So, how was your day Ocellus?" Smolder asked.
"Oh it was nice! Ember showed me this morning the dragon eggs! Apparently, they're fairly new and will take months before it hatches! If only I could take one for studying on the features of dragon eggs and track its progress for research!"
"Eh, they take nine months to hatch. That and a bunch of daycare stuff like keeping them warm. That's why we routinely keep the lava flowing and the flames crackling."
"Oohhh, neat!" Ocellus said in amazement.
Okay Smolder, you can do it. No, you can't do it! What if I fail!? What if I do tell Ocellus what I really feel for her and she rejects me, makes fun of me for it or worse, if our friendship would be broken because of it!? I don't know what to do, maybe I should-
"Smolder? Are you alright? You seem to space out a lot today."
"O-oh! I'm fine, yep! Just fine!"
"You will never be able to catch her heart! You are not her type! You're rude, rebellious, and you're a dragon! You don't deserve her!" Smolder's bad side told her.
"Don't listen to to that pitchfork wielding dragon! Listen to me! She cares what's in your heart, not your appearance nor your status! Tell her and everything will be fine!" Smolder's good side said.
"Bah! What a load of mushy stuff! You can't do it! You're too afraid!"
"You can do it, Smolder! I believe in you!"
Her two sides continued to barrage her thoughts, until she snapped.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! I CAN'T! I JUST CAN'T!" Smolder screamed, closing her eyes as she looks away at Ocellus.
"Smolder!? Are you okay!?" Ocellus asked as she rushed to her side.
"Y-Yeah, I am! W-well, not really, I..."
"Calm down Smolder. Take in deep breaths."
Smolder inhaled, and exhaled. She repeated this until she felt better.
"Better now?"
Smolder nodded.
"What's bothering you, Smolder? Whatever it is, you can tell me. I promise I won't judge you for it."
"Really? Your promise?"
"Promise." Ocellus said as she pulled in her seat next to Smolder's, sitting right beside her and placing her hoof around her back.
"Take your time, Smolder."
"I've been trying so long to let you know. To let you know how I really feel. But I struggled to find the courage in me to tell you my feelings, and..."
Smolder hugged Ocellus.
"I'm afraid that if I do, I would be disrespecting my status as a dragon and my hometown as a result. I'm worried that you'll reject me, or make fun of me or worse, don't want to be friends with me anymore.
Smolder took in a deep breath. "Ocellus... I-I have a crush on you."
Ocellus's eyes widened, and looked at Smolder in the eyes.
"You mean... You see me more as a friend, Smolder?" Ocellus asked straight in the eye.
Smolder nodded.
Both creatures stared at each other, with Smolder's forehead sweating due to worry. Then the unexpected happened.
Ocellus nuzzled and embraced Smolder.
"That's the sweetest thing you could say to me, Smolder."
Smolder was taken aback. Was she really okay with her confession? "R-really..?"
"Yes. I'm proud of you for telling me too."
"So, does that mean...?"
Ocellus patted Smolder's back. "Yes, Smolder. I accept your feelings for me. I'm happy to accept it."
Smolder grinned, and returned the loving embrace, placing her arms around Ocellus's back, never letting go.
"Just promise me one thing, Smolder."
"What is it, Ocellus?"
"Take me out on a tea shop in Canterlot. I'd love to spend time with you there."
Smolder chuckled, "Sure, Ocellus. I promise. I have just one question for you."
"What is it, Smolder...?"
"Can you... Give me just one more night?"
