Looking Glass is what you could call an outcast. Her innate talent for what many consider "black magic" has made sure ponies stayed far away from her for most of her life. It never seemed fair to her: so what if she could temporarily manifest spirits and talk to the dead at will, or even summon the occasional demon? If anything, with the rare talent for that type of magic, her path in life should be clear and easy. If only her hometown wasn't painfully superstitious. Now her only company is her family. And the dead, including an oddly kind demon and his many slimy tentacles.
