Chapters When the three kingdoms founded Equestria, they didn't realize there were already ponies in the land. They were the remnants of a long forgotten realm, Grogar's Empire. Though centuries had passed since Grogar's defeat, the land still suffered. Perhaps, with the help of the newcomers, the land of Equestria can become peaceful and prosperous.
It is in a small village of survivors that our story begins, as a young filly is waiting for news...
The filly paced back and forth outside the house.
"What's taking so long Gusty?"
She looked up at the older pony. Gusty smiled down at her.
"These things take time little one. Your mother is trying very hard."
"Can't I help?"
Gusty chuckled.
"I'm afraid not. little foals are the business of grown ponies. That's why you and I are waiting outside."
"But you're grown."
"True, but I'm very grown. I'm too old for the excitement."
"You don't look that old."
Gusty glared at her.
"That's not exactly polite, Celestia."
Celestia ignored her and began pacing again.
"I wanna go in!"
"Soon child. You can't interrupt them."
"But I want to see Mommy!"
"Soon dearest. Your parents are trying to bring your little sister into the world."
"I don't want a sister! I just want Mommy and Daddy."
"You don't really have choice. She's coming one way or another. Though heaven knows why they wanted another foal so soon. You're a hoof-ful for a four-year-old."
"Am not!"
Gusty reached out with a wing and pulled the filly close.
"Little Celestia, you're going to be a big sister soon. Do you know what that means?"
Celestia looked up at her.
"I have to share my toys?"
Gusty couldn't help but laugh at the innocent filly.
"Well I suppose that may happen, but what I'm talking about is far more important. Being a big sister is the most important job in the world!"
Celestia's eyes grew.
"It is?"
"It is. You have to watch out for your little sister. You're her protector."
"Really?"
"Yes. Big sisters make sure their little sisters stay safe. And your sister is going to be especially small at the start, so she'll need extra help from you. And with all the new ponies in the land, you'll have to keep an eye on her. Do you think you can do that?"
Celestia smiled.
"Yeah!"
"Good. But before you can do anything, your sister has to arrive first."
Celestia's smile disappeared, replaced with a frown.
"What's taking her so long?"
"Well it's a long journey, so to speak. But she'll be here soon."
"What will she be?"
Gusty gave the filly a curious look.
"What do you mean?"
"Will she be a pegasus? Or a earth pony?"
"Considering you and your parents are unicorns by birth, I think she'll be a unicorn too."
"That's boring."
"I know ponies who would disagree with you."
"Could my little sister be like everypony else?"
Gusty shook her head.
"No. You can't be born an alicorn."
"Why not?"
Gusty sighed.
"Why are the young so full of questions?"
Celestia moved her hoof along Gusty's wing, feeling the feathers.
"Mommy says I'll get wings someday too!"
Gusty smiled.
"Yes you will. Every pony in our village gets their wings, horn, or both when they reach the proper age. You still have a few years until then. You're awfully lucky to get them so young. I didn't get my wings until I was grown."
Celestia tipped her head to the side.
"Why?"
Gusty looked off into the distance.
"It was a different time back then. The village was different too. Back when I was young, there were quite a few monsters roaming the land. The elders eventually decided we couldn't stay in one place. So we left our homes and started living in tents."
"Really?!"
"Yes. It was rather exciting when I was young. We traveled all over the land. I met all types of ponies and learned a great deal of my magic from the various mages I met."
"That's so cool!"
"Magic was the core of our society then. We relied on every unicorn to do their part against the monsters of the land. Not to mention it was the duty of the unicorns to move the celestial bodies."
"The what?"
Gusty smiled down at the filly.
"The Sun and Moon dear. Unicorns raise the Sun and the Moon."
"They do?!"
Gusty chuckled.
"It used to be an effort that every unicorn helped with, but as the years have gone by, the task has grown harder. Now only a few are capable anymore. Though I suspect some of those ponies from the Unicorn Kingdom might be able to lend aid in that matter... I seem to have gotten side-tracked. What was I saying before the Sun and Moon?"
Celestia tried to remember, but the story had left her without her original query.
"The...monsters I think?"
Before Gusty could continue, she heard the house door's handle turn. The door opened, causing Celestia to spin around. Her father was standing in the door, a grin on his face.
"Would you like to meet your sister?"
Celestia jumped up and down.
"Yes!"
Gusty stood up and sighed again.
"I look forward to meeting her at the gathering later. Is your wife well?"
The stallion nodded.
"Tired but doing well."
Gusty chuckled, pointing at the still jumping Celestia.
"Well this one isn't going to let her rest."
"Thank you for watching her again. I know she can be a bit...energetic."
"I'm happy to help."
Gusty turned, spreading her wings for takeoff. The stallion looked down at his daughter, draping a wing around her.
"Well, let's go in!"
Celestia raced inside, her father following behind.
"Where is she?"
Celestia looked around the front room. Her father chuckled.
"She's in our room Tia."
Celestia moved to the back room, pushing past a curtain. She spotted her mother at once, a smile forming.
"Mommy!"
Her mother held up a hoof.
"Shhh. You don't want to scare your sister."
Her mother looked down towards her belly and lifter her wing. Celestia followed her gaze, spying a small, dark blue shape. She approached slowly, unsure of the creature in front of her.
"She's small."
"That's because she's new sweetie."
Her mother motioned to her father and he came closer.
"What do you think we should name her?"
The mare reached out and brushed Celestia's mane.
"Well...we named this one after the sunny day she was born on. Perhaps we should name her for the night. She's certainly dark enough in color."
"Hmm...Twilight?"
The mare shook her head.
"I was thinking...Luna."
The stallion smiled.
"It's perfect."
He kneeled next to Celestia.
"Celestia, this is your sister Luna."
Celestia smiled.
"Hello Luna!"
Luna squirmed, making small noises of discomfort. Her mother pulled her into her hooves.
"You have to be quieter dear. Luna has small ears. They can't handle big noises yet."
Celestia covered her mouth.
"I'm sorry Mommy."
Her mother smiled.
"It's okay. Why don't you try again?"
Celestia approached cautiously, looking down at her sister. She got low to the floor and scooted forward until she was about to touch the foal. Her voice was no louder than a whisper.
"Hi Luna. I'm Tia."
She looked at her mother, who gave an approving nod. Her eyes turned back to Luna.
"I'm going to be the best big sister ever. I promise."
"Tia, wait up!"
Luna ran after her sister, trying to catch her. Celestia looked over her shoulder as she flew ahead.
"Come on Luna! We have to be on time!"
"I can't fly as fast as you!"
Celestia groaned as she slowed her pace.
"You need to grow faster."
"I can't help that my wings are short!"
"Maybe Gusty can make your wings bigger."
Luna smiled.
"Do you think she could?"
Celestia rolled her eyes.
"I hope I wasn't that gullible when I was your age."
Celestia picked up her pace again, but only stayed a few steps ahead of Luna. Luna frowned as she attempted to stay close.
"You're no fun."
"I just don't want to late for our lessons."
They rounded a corner and saw the rest of the village fillies and colts gathering. Three teachers sat at the front of the small group. The one in the center looked around.
"Where are-?"
Celestia called out.
"We're here!"
Celestia came in for a landing, sitting down at the edge of the crowd. Luna arrived, panting for breath. She sat down next to Celestia as the teacher began.
"Today's lesson will be concerning the weather. You'll all learn what you can do to help in situations that might require your skills. Even though pegasi have the most control over the sky, it is possible for unicorns and earth ponies to lend a helping hoof at times. Now I know you either already can or will eventually be able to handle clouds like pegasi, but it is still important to get a sense of how other ponies are able to handle them. We'll split into three groups so you can all practice with a cloud."
The teachers began picking students. Luna listened carefully, waiting for a teacher to pick her and Tia.
"Celestia, you'll be in my group."
Celestia smiled.
"Okay!"
She jumped up and walked to the front. Luna watched her with dismay as she realized the truth; they weren't going to be together.
Luna wanted to cry, but she forced the tears back. She didn't want to be made fun of again.
"Luna?"
Luna looked up to find Miss Poppy in front of her. She had a big smile.
"Would you like to be in my group?"
Luna slowly nodded, her gaze drifting to Celestia. Miss Poppy followed her gaze, spotting Celestia talking with the other three members of her group. The teacher nodded.
"I know you love to stay with your sister, but it's important for you to grow as individuals."
Luna looked at the ground.
"We usually work together."
"And when you do, Celestia tends to take the lead, doesn't she?"
Luna slowly nodded. Miss Poppy knelt to Luna's level.
"We want you both to be strong. You don't want to rely on your sister forever, do you? Eventually you'll want to do things on your own."
Luna's lip trembled.
"I don't want to be alone."
Miss Poppy's eyes flashed with alarm.
"Oh sweetie! I'm so sorry. I didn't mean like that."
She pulled Luna close.
"I know it must be hard for you two to be without your parents, but I know they would want you both to be strong for each other. And...you get strong by practicing on your own. Does that make sense?"
Luna nodded again as Miss Poppy pulled her into a hug.
"There, there. Let's go join the others and I'll show you how to wrangle a cloud."
Luna smiled and nodded, a little more energy in her eyes.
"Okay!"
She followed Miss Poppy and they joined with two other young ponies. Miss Poppy then led the way to a nearby cloud. It was hovering a few inches off the ground. The young ponies each took a side of the cloud and Miss Poppy smiled.
"Now, we all know that pegasi are the best at working with the weather. Rosy Meadow, would you give a little demonstration?"
Luna watched as Rosy Meadow, a pony about her age, took the cloud and moved it around. She began shaping it with her hooves and then suddenly kicked it. The cloud dissipated into mist, leaving Rosy looking embarrassed.
"Sorry Miss Poppy. I got carried away."
Miss Poppy nodded.
"It's okay Rosy. Will you go grab one of those low ones up there?"
She pointed up above them to a small group of clouds. Rosy nodded and flew up to grab one. Miss Poppy looked at the rest of her pupils.
"Pegasi can do just about anything to the weather with their own hooves. But that's a special trait only they have due to their biology. Alicorns are the only other ponies that share that trait."
Rosy returned with a new cloud. Miss Poppy nodded to a young earth pony on her right.
"Care to try Apple Twist?"
The colt stepped forward and tried to grab the cloud. His hooves passed through it, causing him to nearly fall onto his face. Luna had to stifle a giggle, but enough escaped to catch Miss Poppy's attention.
"Luna?"
Luna shrunk back a little.
"Um..."
Apple Twist straightened up and rolled his eyes.
"Not like she could do it without her sister."
Luna looked defiantly at the earth pony as she lit her horn. Her gaze moved to the cloud as she encompassed it in her aura. She screwed her face in concentration as the cloud began to lift over Apple Twist's head. He looked up at it warily.
Luna focused on her spell and put pressure on the cloud. A drop of water fell onto Apple Twist's nose. His eyes grew big as rain started pouring out of the cloud. He screamed in shock and jumped away, already soaked.
The other ponies in the group started laughing. Miss Poppy was doing her best to keep her composure.
"I think...I think that will...be enough for now. Rosy?"
Rosy nodded, taking off and towing the cloud up to the sky. Luna had a big grin on her face as she locked eyes with Apple Twist.
"Am I still too young?"
He rolled his eyes and walked off. Luna turned her gaze to find Miss Poppy approaching her.
"That was quite the trick Luna. Usually you need some more practice before making a cloud rain."
Luna's smile turned more sincere.
"So, I was good?"
Miss Poppy chuckled.
"Yes and no. You showed some real promise with your magic, but you didn't need to soak poor Apple Twist."
Luna looked at the ground.
"I'm sorry."
"It's okay. You didn't hurt him in any lasting way. Are you starting to see what I was talking about earlier?"
Luna looked up in confusion.
"See what?"
Miss Poppy smiled.
"You have great ability hidden in you. You need to exercise it and help it grow so you can be strong on your own. You don't want to always rely on Celestia, right?"
Luna looked over to her sister's group. Celestia was reshaping her cloud into a duck. Her group was watching in awe while Celestia wore a proud expression.
Luna turned back to Miss Poppy.
"She's so good at magic..."
"She's older. When you reach that age, you'll be better too."
"You really think so?"
Miss Poppy leaned over, touching noses with the young filly.
"I know so."
Luna giggled as she turned to watch Tia again. Someday, she'd be just as talented as her sister. Maybe even better.
"Come on Luna! We're almost to the top!"
Celestia flew up the hill, eyeing the summit. Luna was behind her, chasing after her sister.
"Give me a break! I'm still growing into my wings!"
Celestia reached the top and landed, taking a deep breath. Luna joined her and collapsed on the grass.
"Sweet heavens! Why do we always have to climb to the top?"
Celestia smiled down at her sister.
"Because the Canterlot Hills have the best view!"
They both looked out over the valley. Their village was down at the bottom of the hill they were sitting on, nestled among the surrounding hills. Celestia sighed, thinking of how small their world seemed down there.
"Don't you ever wish we could see more of the world?"
Luna sat up and smiled.
"We're young Tia. It's not like we've missed out or something."
Celestia groaned.
"But I want to see what's beyond the Hills! Look out there! There are forests, lakes, rivers, mountains-"
"Sounds like a lot of walking and flying."
Celestia glared at Luna.
"Come on Luna! Don't you wonder what's out there?"
Luna shook her head.
"I don't have to wonder. I know!"
Celestia's head jerked back in surprise.
"What?! How could you know?!"
Luna stood up and held her hoof out, pointing to the valley.
"Because I am the princess! Do you think a princess does not know her own kingdom?"
Celestia rolled her eyes.
"Aren't we getting a little old to play "Princess" anymore?"
Luna glanced at her, a smug grin on her face.
"I'll let you wear the tiara first."
Celestia was silent for a moment.
"....It better have some rubies on it this time."
Luna giggled and began searching the hill as Celestia made a play-crown. Luna's horn lit up as she began to locate some gems in the soil. Little by little, she gathered a small pile of jewels together.
"Diamonds, opals, emeralds...Aha!"
Luna held up a small ruby, the red stone sparkling in the sunlight.
"Behold the crown jewel!"
Celestia held up an intricate crown made of flowers.
"The perfect ornament for my crown!"
Luna set the ruby in the front of the flower crown as Celestia put it on.
"Do I look royal enough?"
Luna snickered.
"No. But you'll do as a ruler I suppose."
"Rude! As my first declaration, all ponies named Luna must be sat on for their rudeness!"
Celestia tried to tackle Luna, only to have her sister take off into the air.
"Stay away! You'll crush me with your butt!"
Celestia scowled.
"More rudeness? I shall have to sit on you longer now!"
She chased after Luna, the two of them flying down the hillside. They laughed and screamed as each of them attempted to better the other.
After several minutes, Celestia caught Luna.
"Gotcha!"
Luna screamed and as she and Celestia tumbled to the ground. Celestia quickly sat on her sister's back.
"Get off me!"
Celestia shook her head.
"I promised our subjects I would punish you."
"What subjects?"
Celestia looked around, pointing to a rabbit nearby.
"That subject! And...those ones!"
She spotted two squirrels in a tree and pointed to them. Luna groaned.
"Fine! How long do I have to have your big butt on me?"
"Keep calling it big and it will be all day."
Luna giggled as she lit up her horn.
"Are you sure?"
The grass at Celestia's feet began to wave back and forth, brushing her hooves. Celestia fell backward off Luna as she tried not to laugh.
"No! That's cheating!"
Luna jumped up and grabbed the crown from Celestia's head.
"BEHOLD CITIZENS OF THE CANTERLOT HILLS! YOU HAVE A NEW RULER!"
She looked around, discovering the animals had fled. Celestia stood up, brushing some grass off.
"You've got to learn to control that voice better."
Luna shrugged.
"Gusty said it's how royal ponies talk."
"But we're not royal ponies. It just sounds like you're yelling."
"Don't royal ponies yell?"
"How should I know?"
"Besides, we could be one day."
"You don't really believe that, do you?"
"You heard it with everypony else! The kingdoms are looking for somepony to rule over the country!"
"We're kids Luna. Nopony wants us to rule. Besides, they said that months ago. I'm sure they've found somepony by now."
"Wouldn't we have heard if they had?"
Celestia shrugged.
"Who knows."
Celestia walked up to Luna.
"But I did hear something recently."
Luna's eyes grew bigger.
"What?"
Celestia got close enough to whisper.
"I heard that-"
She snatched the crown off Luna and started running.
"There's a coup in progress! Equestria is mine!"
Luna ran after her.
"No fair!"
Celestia started running toward the village. Luna trailed after her, fighting to keep up. They barreled into the village, swerving around ponies. Cries of shock and mild panic filled the air as Celestia wove through everypony.
Luna watched her sister's first few moves and made her plan. She took a different path, gliding through the small market that was set up in the center of the village. She came to a halt behind a nearby house, waiting for her prey.
Celestia came flying down the street, looking over her shoulder for signs of her pursuer.
"Ha! Can't catch me!"
"Wanna bet?"
Celestia lost control as Luna flew out in front of her. Her body crashed into Luna's and they crashed to the dirt, rolling for a few feet. The last thing Celestia saw was the ground coming to meet her face.
But her face stopped an inch short.
Celestia looked around and realized she and Luna were surrounded in a white aura.
"Uh-oh."
Luna stuck her head up.
"What?"
"And what do you two think you're doing?"
They both looked up as Gusty approached them.
"The two of you are worse than a hurricane!"
Celestia looked down again.
"I'm sorry Gusty. We were playing."
Gusty picked up the flower crown, examining the ruby on the front.
"I can see that. Grand dreams for the future?"
Luna smiled.
"Yeah! We're going to be princesses!"
Gusty couldn't help but smile.
"Oh really? And do princesses chase each other through their kingdom?"
That shut Luna up. She looked back down, trying to hide her face. Gusty looked back at Celestia.
"You're supposed to be the older sibling. You're going to have responsibilities before long. What kind of example are you for Luna by flying through the village like a mad mare?"
Celestia sighed.
"I'm sorry."
Gusty stared between the two ponies for a moment before releasing her magic.
"Honestly you two. If you want a future like your make-believe, then you'd better learn to act properly."
Celestia dusted herself off and looked up at Gusty.
"Nopony cares what we do. We're not going to be princesses ever."
"Oh? You're so sure about that?"
Luna nudged her sister.
"Come on Tia! We've got as much chance as anypony!"
Gusty moved closer to them.
"More than you might think. I've heard tell that the kingdoms are looking for younger ponies. Somepony that doesn't hold a bias toward any of the kingdoms."
Luna lit up.
"So, they want...an alicorn?!"
Gusty nodded.
"But they'll only want mature ponies. Not a couple of fillies chasing each other through crowds."
Celestia sat up straight.
"Do you really mean it Gusty? Could we really be royalty one day?"
Gusty smiled.
"That's up to the two of you. If you want to really be princesses, you'll have to show them the type of ponies you are. Somepony who is kind, generous, honest, and loyal."
Luna piped up.
"Can't we have a good sense of humor too?"
Gusty chuckled.
"I suppose that would be necessary in such a position."
Celestia sparked her horn.
"And magic?"
Gusty nodded.
"Magic is a force that can be used for great good in this world. And Equestria will need all the good it can get."
Celestia's eyes sparkled.
"Do you really think we could be princesses Gusty?"
The old pony smiled, nodding her head.
"I've watched over the two of you all your lives and see the potential for greatness. You're both strong ponies. And you balance each other out. With a little help, you could learn to act properly and regally. I've met some of these new ponies and can tell you that will be important to them."
Luna and Celestia stood there in awe, pressed against each other. Luna grinned.
"Will you really teach us?"
Celestia began grinning too.
"We'll do anything you say!"
Gusty nodded.
"I know you would. But I can only show you how to act. What Equestria needs is leadership. I may be the elder in the village, but I'm by no means a leader. You will need to figure out for yourselves the type of leaders you are."
"How do we do that?"
"Well..."
Celestia and Luna leaned in as the old pony began chuckling.
"I don't rightfully know."
Luna groaned, looking at Celestia.
"We're never going to be princesses, are we?"
Luna paced in front of her sister.
"What do you think they're talking about in there?"
Celestia shrugged.
"I suppose they're discussing all of us?"
Luna looked around the clearing. It was her, Celestia, and three other young ponies. All of them had been asked to speak to the sorcerer the kingdoms had sent out. Luna shook her head in frustration.
"Do you think he's made a decision already? What if this was a complete waste of time?"
Celestia smiled.
"I'm sure that's not the case. I think you did especially well showing off your magic. Nopony was as impressive as you!"
"I'm no good at the basics. I just happen to have a couple random spells I'm good at."
""You were still impressive either way."
Luna smiled.
"Well, your concealment spell was pretty amazing. You turned yourself invisible in an instant! And not that shoddy invisibility that some other ponies try to pass off either. I couldn't tell where you were!"
Celestia blushed.
"It's not that great."
"Turning invisible? How useful. Isn't the point in ruling to be noticed?"
Luna rolled her eyes and turned around. A dark grey colt was standing behind her. He was younger than them but carried himself like he was older. Luna smirked up at him.
"Not like you were that impressive. What did you do again? Summon a rock?"
The colt snorted.
"I created a crystal! Can you create gemstones?"
Celestia rolled her eyes.
"How is your talent any better than mine?"
"Just wait until I get my wings! I'll be even better than you two!"
Luna snorted.
"You only just coming of age Sombra. You're still way behind the two of us."
The colt was about to snap back when the door to Gusty's cottage opened. The young ponies gathered together and sat down, waiting for the news.
Gusty emerged from the cottage, smiling at the group.
"Thank you all for entertaining our guest. You can all return to your homes."
A look passed through the small group. It hadn't gone well. Celestia looked up at Gusty, trying to read her expression. The old pony was stoic as she dismissed them. Luna looked worst of all as she attempted to keep her tears back.
"I thought...I thought we..."
Celestia put a hoof around her sister and pulled her close.
"It's okay."
"You two."
They turned around to see Gusty motioning them over.
"I need help getting supplies from my cellar."
Celestia sighed.
"Come on. Let's go help her."
Luna wiped her tears.
"Why can't she just do it herself?"
"You know she'd never make it back upstairs."
They followed Gusty inside. The old pony closed the door behind them.
"I'd like the two of you to meet Star Swirl the Bearded."
Celestia and Luna froze as the sorcerer rose from his seat.
"It's a pleasure to meet the two of you."
He was middle-aged by his looks, although his beard was a dark brown. His robe and hat were covered in stars and bells. All Celestia could think was that he looked like somepony out of a storybook.
"Hello."
Luna sniffled and nodded.
"Hello."
Star Swirl smiled.
"There's no need to be sad. This is a joyous day. Please, sit down."
They took a seat together and stared at the strange pony. He continued to smile as he started.
"Now I'm sure you two know why I came to the village?"
Celestia nodded.
"You're looking for somepony to rule Equestria."
"Spot on! I've been searching for two- No, three years nearly. I was in a small village not far from here and heard an interesting tale. THe ponies there told a legend of a village with ponies unlike any in the land, called alicorns."
Luna wiped the last of her tears away.
"Really?"
Star Swirl nodded.
"Yes! I knew I had to see it for myself, so here I am! Your teacher is a remarkable mage in her own right! The spells she's come up with are beyond anything I could have imagined myself. And to pass this sort of magic on to her whole village is generous."
Celestia looked at Gusty. The old pony didn't seem to be paying much attention, lost in her own thoughts. Star Swirl continued.
"You two show remarkable talent. And your demeanor could rival some of the Unicorn Kingdom's aristocracy. I've never met young ponies so...put together. On the outside anyways."
Celestia shifted in her seat.
"Thank you?"
"And Gusty tells me you have no ties?"
Luna frowned.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Well...your parents are no longer here, correct?"
Celestia sat up straight, her eyes ready to burn a hole in the wizard.
"I would ask you not to mention them please. That is a very personal matter to us, and we don't wish to discuss it with somepony we just met."
Star Swirl seemed surprised by the response. He slowly nodded.
"Of course. Forgive me. I meant no disrespect."
He cleared his throat.
"I find that you two are in a unique position. I've been discussing it with Gusty and, if you're up for it, I think I'd like to present you as my choice for the new rulers of Equestria!"
Celestia and Luna looked at each other in shock. Could this really be happening?
"There is a stipulation though."
Their eyes returned to Star Swirl. He looked to Gusty, causing the old pony to sigh.
"My dear girls...you know I wasn't born with these wings. What you don't know is that I gained them quite by accident through the spell I created."
Celestia nearly fell off her chair.
"You created the spell?!"
Gusty came forward, a book in her hooves.
"Years ago, the land was ruled over by a horrible creature named Grogar."
She set the book down in front of them.
"He ruled this land with an iron hoof. And when the suffering of those around me became too great, I took up a banner against him."
Luna sat forward.
"Did you win?"
Gusty nodded.
"Yes, but I've always feared he would return somehow. I knew I had to be ready when that time came. So...I found a way to stop aging."
Celestia actually fell out of her seat this time. She looked up at Gusty from the floor.
"But...that's not possible."
Gusty shook her head.
"It's very difficult, but not impossible. Don't you remember hearing stories of Grogar when you were little?"
"Well...sort of."
Star Swirl chimed in.
"Even we have heard of Grogar. But his reign was four centuries ago."
Luna's eyes bulged.
"You're four hundred years old?!"
Gusty nodded.
"I am. And I have spent a lifetime making sure that everypony is safe. It's been quiet for centuries, but recent stirrings in the ethereal plane have left me...troubled. So twenty years ago I began turning everypony into an alicorn, hoping to be ready for any trouble that might come."
Celestia got back into her seat.
"That's why you've been teaching us. You wanted us to be ready in case of Grogar."
Gusty nodded.
"I came to terms with the fact that I could no longer guard the realm on my own. There weren't enough ponies with the power to protect. With the arrival of the three kingdoms though, it brought many powerful ponies. Including Star Swirl. But three kingdoms have shown they can't survive separately."
Star Swirl nodded.
"I was sent to find the pony or ponies that could help unite the races. Not only are you a perfect blend of all three, you also have a kindness and compassion that this new nation needs desperately."
Luna looked at the stallion.
"Isn't Equestria at peace though?"
"So to speak. These first years of unity have been...difficult to say the least. That's why I've been searching for the solution. And now I've found it in you two."
Celestia shook her head.
"But we're nowhere nearly as strong or powerful as Gusty. Or most ponies for that matter."
Gusty opened the book.
"That is something I mean to fix."
She turned to a page filled with incantations.
"The reason behind my longevity and power stems from the ethereal plane. I've not given this knowledge to anypony in the village. It's not a magic that can be easily used. In fact...it's deadly if misused"
Luna glanced at Celestia. She was looking warily at Gusty.
"Is that the stipulation? We could possibly die?"
Star Swirl shook his head.
"I'm afraid that's not the issue. You see...the population at large doesn't know that there are multiple alicorns. And it has to stay that way."
Celestia narrowed her eyes.
"Why?"
Gusty put a hoof on Celestia's shoulder.
"Celestia, my spells give a pony immense power. If everypony knew they could obtain power like that, it would be chaos."
Star Swirl nodded.
"The kind of magic we're discussing is one that few could use without killing themselves."
Luna was shaking.
"What about us then?!"
Gusty shook her head.
"You'll be fine. The spells must be used in a very specific sequence to work properly. When we're done, you'll have more power than you'll know what to do with."
Celestia shook her head in return.
"What about the village? I think somepony will eventually notice there are other alicorns."
Gusty got quiet. She didn't meet Celestia's gaze. Celestia turned to Star Swirl.
"What aren't you telling us?"
Star Swirl glanced at Gusty. She nodded her consent and he looked back at Celestia.
"In order to make it appear that you two are the only alicorns, we'd have to erase the village. Everypony would forget they were ever an alicorn. And they would be turned back to the ponies they were before."
The room fell silent. Celestia and Luna looked between the two ponies in front of them. Celestia felt tears running down her cheeks. Luna was in no better state.
Gusty got between the sisters and folded her wings around them in a hug.
"These spells I created have brought prosperity to this village, but nopony can know it ever existed as it has. Not even it's own. This would be necessary for your safety."
Celestia pulled herself out of Gusty's wing, spinning around to face her.
"Our safety?! Making everypony forget brings safety ?! How could you ask them to do such a thing?!"
Luna freed herself and took her place by her sister.
"It's not fair! If that's what has to be done, then we'd rather not be princesses at all!"
Gusty looked at the two for a few seconds before responding.
"I know this is a difficult decision. Believe me, I've had plenty of them in my long life. But we're talking about bringing Equestria together. You two could be the symbols of peace this country so desperately needs."
Celestia stood tall against the older pony.
"And what about what we need?"
"And what is it you need?"
Celestia went to answer, but found she had nothing. She looked at Luna, who shook her head. Her gaze drifted back to Gusty.
"We...we want everypony to be safe. Without them losing everything."
Star Swirl stood, walking around to stand next to Gusty.
"You both care deeply for the ponies around you. That's one of the many reasons why you're suited for this. I'm sure there will be situations where you can find solutions that satisfy everypony, but this isn't one of them. If we're to unify Equestria for good, it will have to come with this price."
Celestia looked at the two ponies for several seconds before turning to her sister.
"Luna?"
Luna was crying again.
"I...I don't know Tia..."
Star Swirl looked at each of them.
"I know this is a lot to ask of you, but believe me when I say that you two could be the answer to a lot of prayers. Your village won't remember that they were like this. They won't feel any loss or pain."
Celestia had begun to cry too, the tears rolling down her cheeks as she tried to think.
"But...we will..."
Gusty sighed.
"If you fell that strongly, perhaps we should reconsider."
Luna wiped her tears away.
"Would we really bring peace?"
Everypony turned to Luna. Star Swirl slowly nodded.
"I believe so. The kingdoms have an unsteady treaty as it is. I fear it won't take much to tip us back into another war. But if we had something to bring us together, perhaps we could put these petty grievances behind us."
Luna nodded.
"And you can promise nopony will be hurt?"
Celestia stared at her sister in shock.
"Luna! You don't mean-"
Luna turned to Celestia as more tears welled up in her eyes.
"If war comes, we could lose them all. At least this way...they can still live."
Celestia's shock was evident. She stared at Luna as she began processing the outcomes. If they tried to avoid this, it would end badly.
Celetia slowly nodded.
"Only if it's our decision together."
Luna pulled her into a hug.
"Together."
They took each other’s hooves as they turned to face Star Swirl and Gusty, ready to take the next step.
Luna checked her wings, making sure every feather was in place.
"You look fine Luna."
Luna glanced at Celestia, already sitting properly.
"I've had them for years and still can't get them to behave."
She looked at Celestia in frustration.
"How do you keep them looking so nice?"
Celestia extended one of her wings, looking it over.
"I don't know. Maybe I'm just better at preening."
Luna frowned and went back to her own wings.
"Dumb feathers."
"If these ponies see you fidgeting constantly, they're going to think you have fleas or something."
Luna shook out her wings before letting them lay against her.
"If I have them, I'd imagine you gave them to me."
Celestia frowned at her.
"You're being awfully rude today. I had rather hoped you'd grow out of that by your age."
"It's not like you're that much older than me. Cut me some slack."
"The pony leaders won't. They're expecting to meet well-mannered alicorns."
Luna sighed, taking a seat next to Celestia.
"It's just... I keep second guessing everything. Did we make the right decision?"
Celestia looked down at the floor.
"I know this wasn't easy. But we've come this far together, and we need to keep moving forward. Everypony is counting on us."
Luna swallowed.
"That's a lot of responsibility for two ponies. We don't even have cutie marks to help guide us."
They both looked at their blank flanks. Celestia shook her head.
"We're just looking for our talents still. Besides, alicorns take longer than the average pony. Star Swirl didn't mind our lack of cutie marks."
"Where is that pony anyway? I thought he was only going to be a few minutes."
"Who knows. He seems rather...absent-minded at times."
"To say the least."
"But you can't deny his ability. I've never seen a unicorn with the kind of power he has."
"What a lovely compliment."
The sisters spun around to discover Star Swirl coming through the door.
"I just wanted to make sure you were ready to meet the leaders of the kingdoms."
Celestia straightened up and nodded.
"I'm ready."
Star Swirl glanced at Luna. She sighed and sat up.
"Me too."
Star Swirl nodded and disappeared again. He was gone for no more than a minute when the doors swung open to reveal him and three other ponies. Star Swirl stepped forward and motioned to the three.
"I am pleased to introduce Chancellor Puddinghead of the Earth Ponies, King Bullion of the Unicorns, and Commander Hurricane of the Pegasi."
Each pony stepped forward and bowed their head in acknowledgment. Star Swirl motioned to the alicorns.
"These are the sisters I was telling you about; Celestia and Luna."
Celestia and Luna bowed their heads, mimicking the others. Celestia raised her head and smiled.
"We're very pleased to meet you."
King Bullion stepped forward, looking both sisters over.
"I must say, Star Swirl wasn't exaggerating. I didn't know it was possible for there to be ponies like you."
Star Swirl chimed in.
"Alicorns."
Bullion nodded.
"Yes. Though I believe you two are younger than I imagined."
Chancellor Puddinghead came forward and nodded.
"Yes. I think we're all surprised by your youth. How old are you exactly? You both look to be in your teens at the latest."
Luna smiled.
"We might look that young, but in your years we're twenty-three and twenty-seven."
The three ponies looked at Star Swirl in shock. Commander Hurricane furrowed his brow.
"A curious race, wouldn't you say Star Swirl?"
Star Swirl nodded.
"Very. But that's what makes them the perfect candidates. They're young by their own standards, but old enough by ours to be respectable."
Puddinghead nodded.
"Of course. We're just a little...surprised."
Star Swirl nodded with a grumble and focus moved back to the sisters. Luna watched as Bullion walked around Celestia.
"Star Swirl here thinks you would be a good fit to rule Equestria. Do you think you're the right choice?"
Celestia didn't move. Luna could tell she was choosing her words carefully. She spoke slowly.
"I believe we can help unite the country. As to whether or not we're the right choice, that's entirely up to you three. Star Swirl has done his homework. Now it's time for you to consider us."
Luna nodded.
"We represent the best of every race; Unicorn, Earth Pony, and Pegasi. We don't cater to one kingdom or another. We're balanced between all of them."
Hurricane nodded.
"I like the sound of that."
Puddinghead cleared her throat.
"Do you mean to rule over us as well? We've been leaders for a long time. Surely we still hold some power?"
Luna looked at Celestia. How could they respond to that? But it seemed Celestia had an idea as she smiled, turning back to Puddinghead.
"Naturally you don't want to lose your power. We see ourselves more as...guardians of the realm and keepers of the peace. You still have leadership over your own kingdoms."
Her smile faded.
"But if you should cause trouble with each other, you won't hold that power for long. If we become the Princesses of Equestria, we will hold the final word over every one of you. Keep the peace, keep your power. Is that understood?"
The three ponies looked at her in shock for a moment. Luna felt the same. Had her sister just threatened them?!
It was silent for a few seconds. And then Hurricane laughed.
"She's got a pair! I don't know about you two, but I like them!"
Bullion nodded.
"Indeed. You make an excellent show of power. I'll be interested to see if you can back it up if necessary."
Puddinghead smiled.
"You both seem like strong mares. I think you're just what we need right now."
Star Swirl hurried forward.
"Excellent! I think that means we can go ahead with coronation plans, yes?"
He escorted the three ponies out, who had begun discussing responsibilities for the coming event. Star Swirl closed the door after them and sighed.
"That...was close."
He turned around, facing Celestia.
"That was quite the stunt to pull! What if they'd decided you were a power-hungry tyrant?!"
Celestia giggled.
"Come on Star Swirl. You know that they were testing us. They wanted to know if we were going to be their personal doormats."
Luna's brow arched. She hadn't picked up on that. But it seemed these two were in the know as Star Swirl smiled.
"Ah, so you did notice. Excellent. You're more perceptive than I give you credit for."
Luna lowered her gaze and sighed.
"I couldn't think of the right words to say. I'm sorry I wasn't more helpful."
Celestia wrapped a wing around her.
"It's okay. I'm sure you'll have plenty of chances to shine."
Luna nodded, allowing a small smile to form. Celestia was so confident in her new identity. She was definitely worthy of being a princess.
Her doubts festered as she considered the future. Would she be able to keep up with Celestia? Or was she always destined to be two steps behind her?
Celestia looked over the decorations, satisfied with their placement.
"Perfect!"
Luna looked around the room.
"Do we really need to have a party?"
"Of course we do! It's our anniversary!"
"Stop calling it that. You make us sound like a married couple."
"Well what do you call marking one year of being Princesses?"
Luna grumbled under her breath.
"An anniversary."
Celestia grinned.
"Equestria has had one year of peace under us! It's cause for celebration!"
"But it's going to be so crowded! Did you have to invite everypony ?!"
Celestia scoffed.
"I didn't invite everypony . Just the leaders. And their seconds. And Princess Amore with some of her Crystal Ponies."
Luna frowned as her sister continued.
"The Zebras. The Griffons. Melvin the manticore, as long as he behaves."
"So, it's going to be a full castle."
Celestia nodded her grin turning sheepish.
"I suppose I did invite a lot of guests."
Luna rolled her eyes.
"I'm going to see if Star Swirl has perfected time travel yet. Maybe he can save me from this night."
"Why do you have to be such a stick in the mud?"
"Why do you have to be so...constantly chipper?"
Celestia beamed at her.
"Because nothing could bring me down today."
Celestia returned to her inspection. She thought back over their time on the thrones. The first year had been eventful to say the least; they had a beautiful castle they'd designed themselves, they'd made contact with the Zebra tribe, and they'd prevented a war with the Griffons. They'd seen all of Equestria and familiarized themselves with the neighboring nations, ready to keep the peace and maintain their new alliances.
And then there was how well her studies were going! Star Swirl really was a wonderful teacher. He'd agreed to take over her and Luna's education now that they'd left the village. He had such a vast knowledge when it came to magic! THere was so much she could learn from a mind like his, despite his eccentricity.
As she checked a set of streamers, Celestia couldn't help but smile as she thought about the upcoming party. It would be so much fun! They'd made so many friends in the short time they'd been ruling and a majority of them were coming!
Her life had become even better than she could have ever imagined.
Her gaze drifted to Luna. Her sister seemed bored. A little sad even. It made Celestia worry at times. Was Luna not happy?
"Luna?"
Luna locked eyes with her.
"Yes?"
"Are you...okay?"
"Yeah. I'm just...not very excited for the party."
Celestia felt her smile fade a little.
"I would think you of all ponies would be excited about a party."
Luna nodded.
"I know, right? But...it just doesn't sound fun having to have a million creatures come up and say, 'good job' and 'keep it up' and what have you."
"Why is praise a bad thing?"
"Because...I don't feel like I've done enough."
Celestia stopped adjusting a bow and frowned. She approached her sister.
"You've done just as much as me for everypony so far. Don't downplay your importance like that! You befriended Melvin! You helped stop a war! And your magic lessons... Well I know you've been struggling lately, but it will click in no time!"
"Thanks."
Celestia sighed.
"Why do you feel like you're not helping?"
"I don't know... I just feel like I'm not."
"Well maybe that's true sometimes . But not constantly!"
"You take this stuff a lot more serious than I do."
Celestia booped her on the nose.
"I'm the older sister. I have to be the serious one. Sometimes I wish I were the younger one."
Luna shook her head as a small smile formed.
"You couldn't handle it."
They both giggled.
"Am I interrupting anything?"
They turned to see Star Swirl walking towards them. Celestia smiled.
"Not at all. We were just looking over everything before tonight."
"Ah! That's right. A whole year as the leaders of Equestria! You two have done well."
Luna waved a hoof at him.
"Oh, it was no trouble."
Celestia smirked at her sister.
"Are you going to be like this all night?"
Luna sighed.
"I'll behave myself tonight. I'm going to spend some time with Melvin now. I doubt I'll see him much, even if he is at the party."
Celestia nodded.
"Okay, but you'd better not be late."
Luna bowed.
"Of course not. I wouldn't want Her Majesty to be kept waiting."
Celestia frowned as Luna turned away with a giggle.
Luna giggled as she walked away, knowing that Celestia was annoyed by the show. She made her way to the courtyard, finding Melvin lounging by a fountain.
"Hey Melvin! Do you want to go for a flight?"
The manticore opened an eye.
"Can't I sleep?"
"Oh, come on! I'm bored."
"I'm resting up for the party."
"Ugh! Everypony and this dumb party!"
"Aren't you excited?"
"No! I just want to be alone honestly. Even Tia is too much right now. Ever since we took over, I feel like we are heading in different directions. Sure, we spend a lot of time together, but I feel like we want such different things."
"Well what do you want?"
Luna sat down, resting her head against the manticore.
"I don't know. I…I'd like to be equal.”
"Equal?"
“Yes. I just feel like Tia's outpacing me everywhere. And it's only gotten worse since we became the Princesses."
"Have you talked to her about it?"
Luna rolled her eyes.
"Oh yeah. ‘Hey sis! Can you stop being better than me in everything?’ That would go over well."
Melvin huffed.
"If you don't tell her, it will only get worse."
Luna stared at the manticore and sighed.
"I know. But...I have to try harder too. I can be regal and stuff too. And I know I could be better at magic. I mean, there's still basics I'm trying to master, but I’ll get there!"
Luna felt a tear roll down her cheek.
"I just...don't want to be left out. What if years from now everypony is like 'Oh look it's Princess Celestia! And there's her sister. Isn't it nice they made her a Princess too?'"
Melvin used his tail to wipe away the tear.
"You're overthinking it Luna. Celestia won't let you be forgotten.
Luna looked down at the ground.
"I know she wouldn't. But I won't either. I'll make sure I'm remembered, no matter what."
Melvin opened his eyes and stood up, stretching out his limbs.
"How about that flight? Flying always helps calm your nerves."
Luna looked up at the manticore and smiled.
"You always know how to make me feel better, don't you?"
Melvin smiled, extending his wings. Luna followed suit and they took off into the sky.
Luna's thoughts drifted as she glided over the Everfree Forest. It was so peaceful up here in the sky. All her worries melted away as she felt the breeze on her face and wings.
Melvin followed alongside her, equally content.
"You and Celestia may part when it comes to your goals, but you'll always be sisters. Just remember that."
Luna smiled at the manticore.
"I suppose you're right. As always."
Sisters. They'd always have that going for them, wouldn't they? They would be together no matter what. And they'd already been through a lot! Maybe Melvin had a point. Even if Luna lagged behind, it didn't mean she was lesser than her sister. That would be ridiculous, right?
Her focus shifted as she caught sight of ponies making their way through the forest.
"Looks like the first party guests will arrive shortly. I'd better head back."
She drifted over to Melvin and gave him a hug.
"Thanks Melvin."
She turned back towards the castle, picking up her speed. She didn't want to keep Celestia waiting.
Star Swirl paced back and forth as he examined the different work styles of the Princesses.
"Very good Celestia. You should have that spell down in no time."
"Luna, you should try aiming your horn in a parallel fashion."
"Excellent Celestia! You've been practicing."
"Not bad Luna, but you could put a little more power behind that one."
"Raise your horn a little higher Celestia! Perfect!"
"Luna? Are you trying to light the table on fire?"
Luna threw her head back.
"UGH!! Can you just let me practice you old goat?!"
Star Swirl and Celestia stared at her in shock. Luna sighed, rubbing her temples.
"I'm sorry. It's been a long day."
Star Swirl nodded.
"Yes, I think you're right. Perhaps we should call it a night."
Celestia pouted.
"I could still study."
Star Swirl nodded.
"You're welcome to continue your studies in your room if you wish."
Celestia collected a few books and left the study. Luna went to follow her.
"Ahem."
She flinched, slowly turning back to Star Swirl.
"Look...I'm sorry. I didn't mean to call you a goat."
"I've been called worse Luna. What I want to hear is why you're so stressed over this."
"I'm not stressed! I'm...tired."
"Tired?"
Star Swirl moved closer, examining her face.
"Hmm...you do look tired. Have you not been sleeping?"
"I have ! But my dreams...I don't know. It's like I'm walking through a hall of mirrors. And I keep seeing the most bizarre things through each one. It's so much to take in that I feel like my head is going to explode with all this stuff."
Star Swirl nodded.
"How long has this been going on?"
Luna shrugged.
"A few years. But they seem to happen more often now."
The wizard sighed.
"I wish I could tell you what was happening, but I'm not sure I rightfully know. Dreams are a strange thing."
Luna sighed too.
"You can say that again."
"I could try a sleeping spell on you if you'd like. It might help."
"No. I've tried a few already. I'll be okay. Just...don't expect as much out of me as Celestia."
Star Swirl chuckled.
"I never have. Your sister is more of a bookworm, like me."
Luna giggled.
"I'm glad somepony else has noticed. I guess I'll go make an attempt at a good night's sleep."
Star Swirl nodded to her as she turned and left. Once she was out of the room, he sighed.
"The wheels begin to turn."
Luna found herself in the hall of mirrors again. She walked down the hall, glancing into each one.
She didn't recognize the ponies she saw. Some seemed happy, some were scared, and some were just...there. And the scenarios varied from normal to downright strange. She saw ponies walking in parks, climbing mountains, growing or shrinking to odd sizes, and being chased by giant spiders. And that was just within the first few steps of the hallway!
"What is all of this supposed to mean?"
She continued down the hall, taking in each mirror. She came to a halt when she spotted a pony she recognized; Star Swirl!
She stood at the mirror, watching as Star Swirl was shedding his star-and-bell studded robes. He climbed a ladder to a diving board. Luna looked down to see a pool below him. What was he doing?
Star Swirl took a stance and jumped from the board, diving into the pool below.
And that's when the music started.
Star Swirl emerged from the depths and began a dance routine. Luna couldn't help but laugh. She found herself crying from the absurdity of the situation.
The hall began to fade as Luna's laughter continued to echo.
Luna sat at her desk reading while Celestia and Star Swirl were practicing a spell. She had to keep hiding her face. Every time she looked at Star Swirl she wanted to burst into laughter. It was taking all her concentration to do so. Literally. She wasn't even reading anymore after stifling her laughter for the fifth time.
She finally had to leave the room for fear of revealing the source of her outbursts.
"I'm going to...go for a flight. I shouldn't be long."
Celestia paused and nodded to her.
"Oh, okay. I'll see you in a little?"
Luna nodded as she held in one last fit of laughter.
She exited the study and made for the courtyard as fast as she could. Once she was out in the open, she took a deep breath.
"Damn, I've really got to learn to hold it in better."
She looked around the courtyard, relishing the quiet space. She felt most at ease when she was alone. The courtyard was a good place to come, but the skies would be even better.
Luna spread her wings and took off into the air, banking hard to the north. She hadn't been up towards the Canterlot Hills in some time.
There was a light breeze as the princess glided through the sky. She closed her eyes and sighed at the solitude.
"Perfect."
She was moving fast along the treeline, soon leaving the Everfree Forest behind her. The Hills were growing in the distance. They pressed right up to the mountains behind them. It really was a beautiful place.
Luna felt a tear roll down her cheek as she spotted a familiar spot; her village. Or at least where the village had been. The homes had been removed and relocated at the behest of Gusty. Something about the location being too saturated with alicorn magic.
Luna dipped lower towards the ground, curious to know if Gusty's claim was true. Sure enough, the Hills emanated a familiar feeling of magic. She'd have to let Celestia know about it.
Gusty and the rest of the village had moved on to another part of the land, though she'd refused to disclose where. Easier break for everypony she said. Luna and Celestia had already been devastated by the sacrifice the village unknowingly made, but for them to disappear from the Hills? That was a gut punch they hadn't expected.
Luna beat her wings, rising above the Hills. She drifted towards the mountain, its tall peak beckoning her to attempt the climb. She had no desire to test her altitude limits today though. Instead she would fly around the perimeter to the other side.
She followed the edge of the mountain, feeling the curve of the rock and air around her. The Canterlot Hills slowly disappeared as she made her way around the solitary peak. Soon she was on the eastern side and heading towards Foal Mountain . They'd never really explored over here before. It was exciting to see something new!
Foal Mountain was the tallest peak on its small range. It was nowhere near as tall as the the mountain behind Luna, but it was respectable. As she flew closer, she realized it was a lot bigger than she'd anticipated. Foal Mountain towered over her before long, dwarfing the young mare in comparison. Luna stared in wonder, taking in the mountain range as the setting sun hit its rocky face.
And that's when she heard a low growling.
Luna looked around but couldn't find the source of the sound. She slowed down until she was hovering, looking at the mountains.
"Is somepony there?"
She waited silently, listening for any sound at all. And then it came.
Another growl came from above. And then some softer hissing.
Luna looked up, realizing that the sounds were coming from higher on the mountains. She slowly began climbing, keeping close to the rock face. Whatever it was up there didn't sound happy.
She came to a small ledge and set herself down. It seemed that there was a ravine of some sort on the mountain, hidden from the world by the rock wall Luna was now balancing on. She peered over the edge, down into the ravine below.
A dragon was fending off several ponies!
The ponies were unlike any Luna had ever seen. Their bodies were dark grey, nearly matching the color of the mountain. Their eyes were a piercing yellow. But the biggest difference were the wings. They had bat wings!
Luna's eyes grew bigger as she realized she'd come across a group of bat ponies! She'd only ever read about the race in her books. They were thought to be extinct by this point. But here, right in front of her, were several! And they were fighting a dragon!
Luna leaned forward more, wanting to get a better look. Her hooves were right along the edge.
And one hoof dislodged a small rock, sending it down into the ravine. The fighting stopped as the dragon and bat ponies all looked up to the top of the wall.
Luna felt all their eyes lock on her. She forced a smile and laughed nervously.
"Umm...hello..."
Luna stood rigid; the eyes of the creatures locked on her.
The dragon's eyes broke away from her. Luna realized what was happening too late.
"Watch out!"
The dragon swiped its claws at the nearest bat ponies. Three of them dodged the attack, but the fourth was grazed by one of the claws. The bat pony cried out in pain, beginning to fall.
The dragon spread its wings and began beating them. It wasn't enough to take off, but it caused a wind strong enough to throw the bat ponies back towards the wall. Luna held on for dear life as the wind tried to carry her off.
When the dragon paused it's flapping, the bat ponies took to the sky. They shot past Luna, leaving her to stare after them. They quickly disappeared around the mountain. Luna let her gaze drift back to the dragon. She immediately felt her heart drop into her stomach.
The injured bat pony had been left behind. And the dragon was approaching it.
Luna didn't think as she jumped from the wall, speeding toward the bat pony. She landed in front of it, spreading her wings out to block the dragon.
"YOU WILL COME NO CLOSER BEAST!!"
Her Canterlot Voice echoed against the rocks. The dragon reared back, caught off guard by the volume of the pony in front of him.
"Great Vulcan! How can you be that loud?"
Luna glared up at the dragon.
"YOU WOULD DARE ATTACK A DEFENSELESS PONY?"
The dragon covered his head.
"Would you be quiet?! I can hear you just fine if you speak at a normal volume!"
"Yes, please. Some of us are rather sensitive to sound."
Luna looked at the bat pony. He was covering his ears. She blushed, embarrassed at the discomfort she'd caused.
"I...I'm sorry! I didn't mean to..."
The dragon blew a plume of smoke.
"Why are you here pony? This is not your concern."
Luna looked back at the dragon defiantly.
"It is my concern! I am a Princess of Equestria!"
The bat pony slowly stood up.
"Equestria? Is that what they've started calling it? I think I preferred when it didn't have a name."
The dragon nodded.
"That we can agree on."
Luna scowled at both of them.
"Well I didn't choose the name! I'm just a Princess!"
The bat pony shook his head.
"Well I didn't vote for you."
"You don't- Never mind that. Why were all of you fighting just now?"
The bat pony pointed up at the dragon.
"He started it. We came looking for some new caves and he has the nerve to say they're all his!"
The dragon growled.
"Not just mine! They belong to all the dragons that live in these mountains."
Luna looked up at the dragon.
"How many are you?"
"Twelve."
"And how many caves are there?"
"That's hardly the point."
"How many?"
"....Twenty. Twenty-five. Possibly thirty."
"In all?"
The bat pony interjected.
"That's just the eastern half of the range."
Luna shook her head at the dragon.
"Then why can't you share some of them with the bat ponies?"
"Because this is our side of the mountains!"
The bat pony stepped around Luna, glaring at the dragon.
"We only have ten caves on the western side! And they're getting crowded as it is!"
"You bat ponies multiply like rabbits. Have you no self-control? We only have young once every decade."
The bat pony tried to lift off, but his right wing refused to support him with the injury it bore.
"If I wasn't injured, I'd make sure you'd never sire an egg again!"
The dragon growled again, smoke beginning to emanate from his mouth.
Luna jumped between the two of them.
"Will you just STOP!!"
The last word echoed, making both creatures pause. The bat pony flicked his ears.
"I thought you were done yelling."
Luna turned to him.
"Not if you're going to start fighting again! Now stand back!"
"This isn't your fight kid. Let me by."
"Kid?! Don't mistake my looks for youth. I'm an alicorn."
"Well I'm a bat pony and that's a dragon. And our two races hate each other."
The dragon nodded.
"Agreed."
Luna looked between the two for a moment, trying to think. What would Celestia do now? She was already trying to be as diplomatic as she could be, but it didn't seem to be getting anywhere.
"Look...you can't just...we have to..."
She looked at the bat pony. He was nursing the wound on his wing. It clicked in Luna's head that his wound was partially her fault. She let out a sigh and looked up at the dragon.
"I have no quarrel with you, but he's injured. Will you allow us to leave so I can take him home?"
The dragon stared at her for a few seconds before nodding.
"Fine. But I don't want to see them back over here again."
Luna shook her head.
"I won't make that promise for them. And when I return, I expect to have a talk with both races in the same cave."
Dragon sneered at her.
"Why would I agree to that?"
Luna flew up and landed on the dragon's nose.
"Let me be clear. You will meet with me and the bat ponies. If you refuse, I will make sure these mountains come crumbling down."
The dragon glared at her. And Luna glared right back. After several intense seconds, she saw his eyes flicker.
"Very well. Now leave."
Luna smiled and glided back down to the bat pony.
"Come on. You're in no shape to fly on your own."
The bat pony stared at her.
"Why would you help me?"
"Because that's what you do for somepony who can't help themselves."
He chuckled.
"You've never met bat ponies before. Didn't you see how they took off without me?"
She nodded.
"I did. And I don't understand why they wouldn't help you."
"Because I'm dead weight. With this injury I won't be able to fly for at least a month. I can't very well expect anypony to take care of me."
Luna frowned.
"Why not? Don't you take care of the sick and elderly in your caves?"
"Well little things, yeah. But something like this? I'm as good as dead to them. I won't be able to contribute to the colony."
Luna's frown deepened.
"Well that's not going to do at all. Come on..."
Her frown disappeared.
"I'm so sorry. I never got your name."
The bat pony smiled.
"It's Fang."
Luna smiled back.
"Okay Fang. I'm taking you home."
She helped brace him for takeoff and looked over her shoulder. The dragon was still standing there. Luna flashed her smile.
"I look forward to meeting you again...."
"Grawn."
"Grawn. I hope our next meeting can be under better circumstances."
Grawn slowly nodded as the two ponies took to the air. Luna wobbled as she did her best to support Fang and herself. They worked in tandem, making their way to the western half of the mountains. Fang nodded up towards the summit of Foal Mountain.
"Our caves are closer to the top. I hope you're ready for a climb."
Luna nodded and they began to climb higher through the air.
It wasn't long before Luna spotted the caves. They were grouped together near the summit, snow decorating the edges of each entrance. Luna felt her smile grow as the anticipation built for meeting the rest of the bat ponies.
Luna shook her head, attempting to rid herself of any tiredness.
"I should have slept more."
Dusk smiled as they flew towards the dragon caves.
"You regular ponies aren't much for the night hours, eh?"
Luna nodded.
"We sleep at night."
Dusk shook her head.
"Bat ponies thrive in the darkness. We're a lot more sensitive to light."
"I'm sorry to drag you out here then. The sun must be unpleasant for you."
The bat pony shrugged.
"I'm in the same cave as you on this one. I would normally be asleep by now. So, we're both tired. The sun doesn't do much to worsen the feeling."
Luna chuckled.
"So, we're both tired and trying to negotiate peace with dragons?"
Dusk smiled.
"This should go well."
Luna looked ahead, spotting the first of the dragon caves.
And then she heard a growl from above them.
Dusk's eyes shot upward.
"We've got company!"
Luna looked up and gasped. A dragon was descending toward them rapidly!
Dusk went to dive toward the ground.
"We have to get low!"
Luna waved to her.
"Don't move! Just cover your ears!"
Dusk looked at her for a moment. Her eyes lit up as the words clicked. She covered her ears as Luna looked up at the dragon.
"I COMMAND THEE TO STOP!!"
The dragon slowed its descent.
"Oh great. You again?"
Luna blinked a few times as she looked at the dragon.
"Grawn?"
"Yes?"
Luna smiled.
"I told you I'd be back!"
He descended until his head was level with Luna.
"I didn't think you'd be foolish enough to actually show your face pony. What do you want?"
Luna motioned for Dusk to fly closer. The bat pony slowly drifted over to hover next to Luna. Luna held out a hoof.
"This is Dusk, leader of the bat ponies. We wish to discuss a truce with the dragons."
Grawn huffed, causing smoke to exit his nostrils.
"You want to discuss peace?"
"Yes."
"So, you wish to speak to Razer?"
"If they're the leader, then yes."
Grawn stared at them for a few seconds before smiling.
"Alright. It's your funeral."
Dusk glanced at Luna, her eyes filling with concern. Luna smiled and put a hoof on Dusk's shoulder.
"We'll be fine."
She looked at Grawn and nodded.
"Take us to Razer."
Grawn nodded and flew towards one of the caves. Luna and Dusk followed him, keeping an eye on the sky around them. Sure enough, more dragons began to appear as they approached the cave. There were about a dozen, just like Grawn had said. And Luna could see the entrances to at least twenty caves. There was more than enough room.
Grawn landed at the entrance and walked inside.
"Razer! You'll never believe what's out here."
A low rumble came from further in the cave.
"Oh, I can smell them from here. And I still don't believe it."
Luna watched as a dragon came slithering out from the darkness. He had to be ten times her size at least. She held in a cry of fear as Razer stood at his full height, nearly touching the top of the cave.
"And why have you brought these two to my cave?"
Grawn bowed his head.
"They wish to discuss peace."
Razer let out what Luna could only guess was a laugh. It echoed through the cave like a thunderstorm. Luna and Dusk covered their ears as the laughter continued. Razer lowered his head toward the ground.
"Why should there be peace? You bat ponies are the ones who started it. And we'll be the ones to finish it!"
Cheers drifted in from outside. It appeared there was an audience for the negotiations.
Dusk looked up at the dragon defiantly.
"We're running out of room for our ponies! We need another cave or two to live in. You have more than you need. Surely it wouldn't be too much to ask?"
Razer scratched his chin.
"We don't want the stink of bat ponies anywhere near here."
Luna stepped forward.
"What use are empty caves to you, Razer?"
He looked at Luna and smirked.
"Who said they were empty? Each of us has a horde. Some of us need extra room."
Luna's mouth hung open.
"Those caves have treasure in them?"
Razer nodded, turning to Dusk.
"We're running low on space too, you know. Dragons gather regularly. Some of us have been at it longer than others. I have four caves for my horde alone!"
Dusk frowned at the dragon.
"Couldn't you put it somewhere else?"
The ponies covered their ears as laughter echoed through the cave again.
"Asking a dragon to move his horde?! That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard! No pony could ever make a dragon do that!"
Luna straightened up and took a deep breath. Dusk kept her ears covered.
"Oh boy."
"RAZER!!"
Luna's voice echoed over Razer's laughter. The sudden noise made Razer pause. He looked at Luna with curiosity as she continued.
"DO NOT TAKE US FOR A COMMON PONY! YOU STAND IN THE PRESENCE OF A PRINCESS OF EQUESTRIA!! WE HAVE COME TO MAKE PEACE BETWEEN THE DRAGONS AND THE BAT PONIES AND WE WILL NOT LEAVE UNTIL PEACE IS MET!!"
Razer stared at Luna and smiled.
"Well Princess , what do you propose?"
Luna took another breath.
"You refuse to move your treasure?"
"Yes."
Luna turned to Dusk.
"You're not willing to leave the mountains?"
Dusk nodded.
"This has been our home for centuries."
Razer nodded too.
"For us as well."
Luna sighed.
"The bat ponies need room for their families. Is there really no space in all these caves?"
Razer shook his head.
"We're running out of room ourselves."
Dusk looked up at him.
"And what will you do when you run out? Will you attack us and take our home?"
Razer huffed, blowing a ring of smoke toward the ponies.
"Don't be stupid. We'll just dig more caves into the mountains."
That's when it clicked for Luna. A smile grew on her lips.
"You dig these caves yourself?"
Razer nodded. Luna danced in place.
"I think I have an idea!"
Luna looked at Dusk. The bat pony was giving her a funny look. Luna realized how silly she must look and recomposed herself.
"Would the dragons be willing to dig three new caves on Foal Mountain? If you provide those caves, the bat ponies will have no need for yours!"
Razer narrowed his eyes.
"And what do we get for our services?"
Luna looked at Dusk. Dusk shuffled her hooves.
"I'm afraid we don't really have anything to give."
Razer shook his head.
"Why should we help you then?"
Luna looked up at the dragon.
"Because it's what a friend would do."
Grawn scoffed from the entrance.
"Friends? We're not friends with bat ponies."
Luna looked back at him.
"I know there's nothing that bonds you together, but maybe it's time for that to change."
She turned to Dusk.
"What could the bat ponies do to help the dragons?"
Dusk thought for a moment.
"Well...do you ever hunt for treasure at night?"
Razer shrugged.
"Sometimes, but we tend to sleep most nights."
Dusk smiled.
"Not us! We're nocturnal. And we're good in dark places. We can locate gems easily in the dark! What if we offered to help you find more treasure from time to time?"
Razer seemed surprised.
"You'd...just help us?"
Dusk nodded.
"If you can really give us more space, I think I could convince some of my best bat ponies to help out when you need it. It's the least we could do for you giving us new homes."
Razer glanced at Dusk.
"How much of the treasure would you want?"
Dusk chuckled.
"We don't really keep treasure."
"You mean...you wouldn't want any of it? Not a single stone?"
Dusk shrugged.
"Unless you wanted to. But that's up to you really."
Razer looked back at Luna.
"And all we have to do is dig three caves?"
Luna smiled.
"Three caves. And they'd need to be done however the bat ponies want them."
Razer put a claw to his chin as he thought.
"I don't get it...why would you agree to help us for something that would take us barely a day to do? Something seems wrong with that."
Dusk smiled.
"It's not a matter of how long it takes you. It's a matter of what you're giving us. The bat ponies would have a new home and the dragons would grow their hordes."
Razer looked at Grawn.
"Well?"
Grawn shrugged.
"I guess it wouldn't be so bad being...friendly."
Razer smiled as he looked back to the ponies. He slowly held out a claw toward Dusk.
"I'm willing to put everything behind if you are."
Dusk held out her hoof, touching it to Razer's huge claw.
"I hope we can truly be friends from now on."
Luna tried to look regal. The excitement was too much for her though as she found herself dancing in place again.
Celestia sighed as she left Luna's room. It had been a stressful day to say the least.
When Luna hadn't returned last night, Celestia had begun to panic. She'd barely slept, choosing to pace around the castle instead. Star Swirl assured her that Luna would be fine, but it didn't do anything to quiet the uneasy feeling Celestia had.
When morning came, Celestia was determined to go look for her sister. She'd made a plan and was ready to go!
And that's when Luna showed up.
Celestia screamed for ten minutes straight about how irresponsible Luna was and how worried she'd been. Luna sat there and took it all.
When Celestia had finally stopped, Luna told her story about the dragons and the bat ponies. Star Swirl found it fascinating. Celestia's temper was cooled slightly as she couldn't help but feel proud of her sister for being diplomatic.
Luna had promptly gone to bed as she was exhausted from the whole adventure.
And now Celestia could relax.
"Celestia!"
She turned to see Star Swirl approaching her.
"Now that Luna is safely home, you can get ready for your duties today."
Celestia groaned.
"Duties? What am I doing today?"
"You're going to visit with the three kingdoms today. Or I suppose I should really call them the three cities now."
"All three of them?"
"Yes. And since Luna is out of commission, you'll need to step up and meet with everypony."
Celestia took a deep breath.
"Okay. When do we leave?"
Star Swirl smiled.
"Five minutes."
Celestia's eyes nearly popped out of her head.
"What?! I haven't even brushed my mane!"
She took off running as Star Swirl chuckled to himself.
Celestia blinked rapidly as her eyes adjusted again. Star Swirl's transportation spell always threw her for a loop. She looked around, taking in the city around her.
"It's amazing! What do the unicorns call it?"
Star Swirl looked around.
"I'm not sure if they've come up with one yet. I'm sure they'll come up with something pompous as always."
Celestia giggled.
"You don't hold your own race in high regard, do you?"
"On the contrary! I hold unicorns in very high regard. It's their personalities I can't stand."
They both chuckled.
"Look! It's Princess Celestia!"
Celestia watched as unicorns began coming down the street toward her and Star Swirl. Ponies were waving and shooting sparks from their horns as they greeted them.
"Princess Celestia! Star Swirl!"
The crowd parted as two familiar ponies came forward. Celestia smiled.
"King Bullion! Princess Platinum!"
Bullion shook his head.
"I renounced my title a year ago. It's Mayor Bullion now. Welcome to Manehattan!"
Celestia bowed her head.
"It's an honor to be in your city Mayor."
Her gaze turned to Platinum.
"So, I suppose you no longer go by Princess?"
Platinum smiled.
"That's right. I can't very well be a Princess when you and Luna are around."
She looked around the crowd.
"Did she not come with you?"
Celestia shook her head.
"She couldn't make it today. But she says hello!"
Platinum beamed.
"Well, you'll have to tell her about everything you see today! Come! We want to show you everything!"
Star Swirl chimed in.
"The King-I mean Mayor-and I have some things to discuss. Why don't you two go ahead and we'll catch up for lunch?"
Celestia nodded to her mentor and followed Platinum into the city.
Celestia settled into a chair and smiled.
"It's going to be lovely Platinum! I can picture it all so well. The unicorns have already done so much to make this island a home."
Platinum took a sip of her tea, settling into her own seat.
"I know it's nothing extravagant, but we hope to make this place a center for business. We've always had an edge in commerce compared to the other ponies."
Celestia sighed.
"Why is it always a comparison? Surely you can see every race is perfectly capable. Just because you can wield magic doesn't make you better than anypony."
Platinum nodded.
"Yes, I know. Just how you taught me that lack of a cutie mark doesn't mean lack of ability."
Celestia glanced down at her blank flank and nodded.
"One of these days Luna and I will figure out our true talents."
"Speaking of Luna, why couldn't she come?"
Celestia sighed and turned her gaze back to Platinum.
"She was negotiating a peace treaty between some dragons and bat ponies. It kept her up all night."
Platinum's eyes widened.
"That's a story I'd like to hear from her!"
Celestia smiled.
"I'm sure you will one day. I'm surprised I'm functioning as well as I am. I was up all night worrying about her."
"You weren't confident in the negotiations?"
"I didn't even know she was negotiating. I thought she just ran off."
"Oh. Well that would make one worry."
Celestia rubbed her eyes, finally beginning to feel the effect of her sleepless night. Platinum sighed.
"You seem to hold a lot more responsibility than Luna at times. Does she run off like that often?"
"What? No! It was a one-time...thing..."
Come to think of it, Luna did tend to disappear when they needed to do more important things.
Platinum had a small smile.
"I know that look. And I understand it all too well."
Celestia focused on her friend again.
"What look?"
"The one where you realize you're the responsible one. And that there's not much you can do about it. That's how I feel about my younger brothers."
Celestia shook her head.
"It's not that Luna isn't responsible, she just...goes about things differently."
Platinum nodded.
"I know. I've sensed that from meeting with you both before. You handle social functions much more...elegantly."
"Luna's not big on social functions."
"I can tell you from experience that social functions are a huge part of being royalty."
Celestia slowly nodded as Platinum continued.
"Look at today. We've been walking through the city and you've been so cordial with everypony. You act like each pony you talk to is the most important pony in the world! That's a real gift. You're always smiling and happy to interact with others. I don't mean to be rude, but Luna is almost your opposite."
Celestia shifted in her chair.
"I know she can be...rough around the edges, but you've seen her act like royalty before."
Platinum nodded.
"You're right. She has the ability, but not the talent. You do."
Celestia felt her anger beginning to boil, but decided to nip it in the bud. Her next words came out sharp and short.
"Well I think you're wrong Platinum."
Platinum raised a hoof.
"I apologize. I only wished to voice my opinion as a friend."
Celestia gave her a curt nod.
"And I appreciate that you felt you could approach me with your thoughts. But perhaps a change of subject is in order."
Platinum smiled.
"Of course. In fact, it's about time for lunch!"
She stood up and walked to the door.
"Where could Father and Star Swirl be?"
Platinum exited the room, leaving Celestia alone. The Princess took a deep breath as she felt a tear roll down her cheek.
Celestia knew she should feel upset for what Platinum had said, but she wasn't. What upset her was the fact she agreed with her friend. Luna acted like it was such an inconvenience being a Princess.
Not her though. She loved being a Princess more than anything. She was loved by everypony in Equestria. She had the power to protect them. It was as if she was a mother protecting her children. Her day in this new city had proven that to her. Everypony was so excited to see her and treated her with a level of respect and admiration that she'd never known before. And she loved it. She felt like she was on top of the world.
So why didn't Luna share in that feeling? Why couldn't she see how important their work was?
Celestia quickly wiped her tears away and took another breath, standing to follow Platinum.
Luna and Fang landed at the edge of the largest cave entrance. They were instantly surrounded by bat ponies. Luna looked around nervously as the ponies bore their fangs and hissed at her. Fang hissed back at them.
"Put those away! She saved me from the dragon."
A bat pony stepped forward. Luna guessed she was the leader of the group based on how she carried herself.
"You know our ways. If you got injured, that's your problem."
Luna frowned.
"Well that seems stupid."
The bat ponies around her looked shocked at her words. The leader narrowed her eyes, looking Luna over.
"And...who might you be?"
Luna stood tall as she answered.
"I'm Princess Luna, guardian of Equestria. I've come to return your comrade and help negotiate a peace between you and the dragons."
The bat ponies began laughing. The leader smirked at her.
"Peace? We can't have peace with those beasts. And I doubt we have much use for Fang here if he can't fly. We need all able-bodied bat ponies for patrols. What good is he to me if he's grounded?"
Fang spread his wings, flinching a little.
"I'll be fine in a day or two."
The leader arched her brow.
"Lift off."
Fang stood there for a moment before slowly lowering his wings.
"Fine. I can't. But I'm not useless."
"I'll decide if you're useless or not."
The leader turned back to Luna.
"You should have left him for the dragon. You can go now."
The leader turned and began walking away. Luna took a few steps forward.
"Hang on! I'm here to help!"
"We don't need your help Princess."
"Stop!"
The bat pony kept walking.
"Stop!!"
Fang flinched again.
"Dusk you'd better stop."
She didn't respond as she moved further into the cave, followed by her fellow bat ponies.
Luna took a deep breath. Fang covered his ears in anticipation.
"I COMMAND YOU TO STOP!!"
Her Canterlot Voice reverberated through the cave at an alarming volume, echoing against every rock, wall, and stalagmite. The bat ponies all squirmed as they covered their ears. Dusk turned back to Luna and Fang as the echoes continued.
"By the night! What do you want from us?!"
Luna walked further into the cave, coming within a few steps of Dusk.
"We are Princess Luna of Equestria, guardian of the land and keeper of the peace. We have witnessed firsthoof the ill feelings between the bat ponies and the dragons of Foal Mountain and wish to help resolve this conflict."
Dusk looked at the alicorn and scoffed.
"Resolve the conflict, eh? It will be resolved when we have enough room for our families and young ones."
Luna glared at the bat pony.
"Is that it? You need more space and you're willing to go to war for it?"
"It's not like those greedy lizards are going to give up the caves freely."
"Have you thought of asking them?"
Dusk was about to answer but stopped. She looked around at the other bat ponies. They seemed just as unsure. Luna rolled her eyes.
"You never thought to ask ?"
Dusk shuffled her hooves.
"It's not like they'd say 'yes' now. There's too much that's happened."
Luna nodded.
"Then you have to come to a compromise."
She looked around the cave.
"May I ask to see more of your home? I'm surprised you think you're running out of space. It seems pretty spacious to me ."
Dusk sighed and led the way around the corner.
"This is the front half of the cave. And this is the biggest cave we have too. The other ones are a lot smaller. They can fit maybe two or three families at most. This one should only have a dozen."
Luna turned the corner and nearly jumped at the sight of dozens of bat ponies.
"This is a dozen families?!"
Dusk shook her head.
"I said the cave should have a dozen families. This is closer to twenty."
"And the other caves?"
"Each have one family more than they should."
The bat ponies looked at Luna warily. A young foal grabbed onto its mother and hid behind her legs.
"Is that the scary monster that yelled Mommy?"
Luna realized her error in using her Canterlot Voice again. She must have terrified these ponies, making them hide in the furthest reaches of their cave. She stepped forward and bowed her head.
"Forgive me for causing such distress to all of you. I had no idea you were so many. Or how young some of you were. I'm not here as an enemy. I want to help."
The bat ponies looked at Dusk. She sighed and nodded.
"I know. It's weird, but true."
Luna raised her head and looked around.
"I never expected there'd be so many. With how crowded it's become, have you ever thought of leaving the caves?"
Dusk shook her head.
"The caves have been our home for centuries."
"Centuries? I'm surprised these caves aren't filled to the brim with bat ponies."
Dusk nodded.
"We've been fighting the dragons for a long time. Before any of us were born even. Our numbers dwindle while they haven't suffered a single loss."
"Surely somepony has tried for peace before?"
Dusk shook her head.
"Never. This would be the first."
Bat ponies began calling out to the two mares.
"Peace? We can't!"
"The dragons would sooner burn the mountain down than live in peace!"
"What would our ancestors think?"
Luna looked at the large group.
"I know this is a strange thing for you. You've lived lives filled with fear and violence. But that's not how life was meant to be. I want to help you. If there is peace, your children can grow up happy. You can enjoy existence."
None of the bat ponies seemed convinced. Dusk shook her head again.
"It's not a concept any of us can really accept Princess. It's never been done."
Luna frowned.
"Just because it hasn't been done doesn't mean it can't be done. I'm going to meet with the dragons and find out their end in this affair. Will you come with me?"
Dusk seemed surprised.
"What?! Go to the dragon caves? Nopony has ever gotten close enough and lived to tell about it."
Luna held out a hoof.
"Care to be the first?"
Whispers of 'don't do it' and 'no' came from the crowd. Dusk stared at Luna's hoof, mulling over the idea. She locked eyes with the Princess.
"You really think you can do it?"
Luna smiled and nodded.
"I believe I can."
Dusk sighed.
"I'm going to regret this."
She took Luna's hoof and shook it.
"The dragons unfortunately are more active during the day. So, we'll have to wait until daylight."
Luna's eyes widened as she realized how long she'd been gone.
"Oh no! I told my sister I wouldn't be gone long. She must be worried sick!"
Dusk put a hoof on Luna's shoulder.
"Would you please stay? I think we'd all feel better about tomorrow if you would."
Luna's thoughts shifted from Celestia to the bat ponies in front of her. Some looked terrified while others were beginning to look hopeful. She sighed, knowing she couldn't abandon them now.
"Of course. I made you a promise and I intend to keep it."
Dusk smiled.
"Well then you're in for a treat. Because nopony knows how to enjoy the night like us bat ponies."
The bat ponies began smiling and becoming livelier. They came forward to get a closer look at Luna but didn't invade her personal space. She smiled and greeted everypony.
Bat ponies began lighting lamps that put off a low, green light. Luna began to see more of the cave as the lights glowed. The bat ponies milled about, getting ready for the night.
The sound of two instruments caught Luna's ears. She turned around to see some of the bat ponies beginning to dance. She smiled and sat down to watch. Dusk sat next to her as the bat ponies began to bring life into the dark cave.
