A monster with a heart
Prologue
Load Full StoryNext ChapterThe monsters of Grogar were always known to be fearsome in there own right, and had the appearance to match. But few ever expected to find out that some of them were not like the rest.
One of them was Ulmara, she was not a typical monster, she was a " Primal" monster. A monster that was magically crafted personally by Grogar, she was a magical being with the aspects of other monsters and was a monster among monsters.
She was feared even from the other primal monsters, her strength and ability to turn invisible, mute the sound of her movements and resistances to magic made her especially dangerous.
Her appearance was that of a large bird, owl, and bat griffin like creature, and had a very thick coat of honey gold hair like feathers with black edges on most of her body with her underside copper gold with black edges.
Her thick coat acted as extremely tough armour, protecting her from most attacks and repelling even ballista bolts and cannon balls made of mythril.
She had a very large and tall spiky black Mohawk with gold edges that ran down her back and made up her tail that was the length of her body.
She had a giant pair of bat wings that were covered in black feathers with gold edges, and her back legs resembled that of a hawk. What was most out standing about her was her face and arms.
They were covered in pearl white feather like hair and where human like.
She had a very human like face that had beastly features, her ears were pointed and elongated like a bats. She had up curved black horns that were a foot long on her head, and the whites of her eyes were shiny solid black and had no pupils.
Her arms were also human like with 12 inch claws that were solid black and her teeth were 9 inch long razor sharp fangs.
Despite being made by Grogar, Ulmara detested him and wanted to get away from him. But because of a spell that was on her and the other primal monsters she couldn't directly act against him.
After she had heard about a unicorn called Gusty Winds. A pony that had fought with Grogar before , secretly she sought him out in an attempt to take Grogar down.
In a forest at a unknown location
Gusty was approaching a forest far into the unknown lands of the West. He had faced off against Grogar more than once before, but either couldn't best him or was halted by his monsters and was forced to retreat.
" Okay this is the location that was mentioned in the letter, I hope this pony really knows something that can help me against Grogar. " Gusty said as he pulled out a letter for his saddle bag and read it again, he received it from a anonymous sender. He had found it in his room in a village he was spending the night in, crumbled in a ball and left on his nightstand.
Heloe Gosty
"I hured you are hunting for way to beet Grogar. If you wants to, cast finding spell on this and a map it will take you to forest. Come alone at night, also me is not a pony so don't be scared when see me." was what was on the crumbled up very crudely written letter.
The words were written in charcoal and were misshapen and smudged, the condition of the penmanship showed it took some effort to even write this much.
" Hmm, the map shows that their a little ways in the forest, this doesn't seem to be a trap so might as well see this through. " Gusty thought as he watched the glowing dot that indicated the sender's location in the forest.
As he came upon a clearing in the woods near the dots location, the dot vanished from the map a moment later.
"Well that's not good, maybe this wasn't a good idea after all." Gusty said as he lit his horn, feeling a sense of danger.
Suddenly the forest became dead silent, not even the noise of a a cricket could be heard.
"Is you Gusty Winds the pony?" Came a sweet sounding voice from behind him , it had a slightly high and low double tone giving it a sing song quality.
Upon hearing the voice Gusty teleported and reappeared facing in the direction of the voice.
"Who's there! " Gusty called out into the dark forest. The only light he had in the dark forest was his horn and the light of the full moon while the shadows hid whatever was speaking.
" Calm down, me sent letter. " Replied the unnaturally sweet voice.
" Can you come out where I can see you, I would prefer to talk face to face. " Gusty said smiling as he kept his confidence, something he was known all around for.
" First... put out light on horn,... hurts me eyes. " Said the voice from the shadows.
" Okay, there now can you we talk friend? " Gusty said as he turned off his horn and smiled at where he thought the voice came from.
" .... Yes, now can... me must warn Gusty pony, me...is not pony so please don't run... me friendly. " Said the voice, sounding closer than before.
Suddenly Gusty heard heavy footsteps coming his way, and what stepped into the moonlight was a monster that he recognized.
" Y-your one of Grogar's monsters , I remember you we've fought before. " Gusty said smiling, keeping his nerve in front of his old foe.
" Yes... we have, sorry... Grogar made me. " Said the strange creature with a sad expression.
She by what he could tell was 4 times bigger and taller than a manticore, her face was stunningly beautiful even the beastly features on it look alluring.
Gusty noticed that she kept pausing occasionally as she spoke. Like she was thinking over how to say the words right. Luckily Gusty was wearing an amulet imbued with a powerful translation spell, so they could understand each other just fine.
"Huha , I took a risk coming out here to find a lead, this might be my only chance to find a way to beat Grogar." Gusty thought steeling himself.
He knew that the creature before him could easily take him out of it wanted to. He was more than aware of it's extraordinary strength, speed, and extremely strong magical resistance.
" So you know my name, what's yours? " Gusty asked smiling as he tried to build a friendly relation.
"Me name... is Ulmara, it nice to meet you." Ulmara said introducing herself as she sat down a few yards away from him.
" So...shall we talk, and sorry for my speech... me not to good with pony words. " Ulmara said giving what she thought was a friendly smile. But because she rarely smiled, it came off as more predatoral than friendly especially with her large fangs.
" It's all right I have this amulet so I can clearly understand what your saying. Want some fruit, I've always got plenty on me since I travel a lot sometimes." Gusty said as he walked a little closer to Ulmara and sat down on a log he pulled over with his magic.
He pulled out a sack from his saddle bag full of various kinds of fruits in it and took a apple and and orange out of it.
" Sure, thank you. " Ulmara said smiling as she took a few apples, oranges, and mangos from the bag. Placing all of them in her mouth, eating them in just one bite.
Seconds passed as they both sat and listened to the sounds of the forest. Gusty was feeling a bit awkward from the prolonged silence, while Ulmara seemed fine as she stared up into the sky admiring the star filled night .
" So since we're getting to know one another of like to ask something important...why would you one of Grogar's own creatures turn on him, if you don't mind." Gusty asked curious as to what were her reasons.
That got a deep a frown from Ulmara, causing Gusty to worry.
"He is... gruel and horrible? Ulmara said with disdain in her voice, not sure she said it right, but tried to convey her meaning all the same.
"Cruel, yes he is the word heartless and tyrant suit him well. " Gusty said smiling, chuckling a little at finding Ulmara's opinion on Grogar were similar to his.
"Yes...but me not like him...me want to be free of him " Ulmara said, emphasizing her words.
"Then why did you fight for him?" Gusty asked delicately.
" He place a powerful spell on me and the others that he saw as the strongest... he calls those his " children. " Ulmara said, shivering in disgust at the end.
" It compels the ones he creates to obey him and make it... impossible to attack him. But... only works when he speaks orders... directly, oh but me able to resist to degree. " Ulmara said smiling nervously, trying to reassure Gusty he was not in danger.
"Good to know, but you mentioned something about a way to beat Grogar, anything you know would be a big help. "Gusty said smiling, hoping to learn something about Grogar.
" Ah yes I know... secret to his power it his bell and the rune stones he wears. Ulmara said, remembering the bell and glowing gold gems that Grogar wore.
"I know that, what I need to know is how to beat him. " Gusty said while waving his hoofs in the air.
" That is what me getting to." Ulmara said raising her large clawed paw(hand) defensively.
"Bell is source of most his power...rune stones amplify his magic...the bell holds most of his power and it's secret is absorb the...enhanced magic of the rune stones makes him...stronger. Take bell away he loses most of his power.... and he won't be able to properly use the stones power to strengthen his magic...and me have way to take them away." Ulmara said showing a wide smile that would impress Discord.
"That's great! What is it some powerful scroll or is it another magical object of power?" Gusty said smiling, thrilled to know there really was a way to beat the father of monsters.
"It is this that is key to taking his power away." Ulmara said as she reached into the thick feather fur around her neck, revealing a small deep emerald green rune engraved key.
" That is literally a key...how is this going to beat Grogar. "Gusty asked dumbfounded, speaking in a flat tone as he looked up at Ulmara.
It is more than simple key...it the key to the clasp ring that holds the bell to the collar Grogar wears...bell can only be taken off by Grogar... but this key can also. It can...break the link between him and the... magical power of the bell and rune stones...stripping him of most of his power. Ulmara said smiling as she explained the significance of the little key.
" I see, take the bell and rune stones away and he can't boost his power, how did find out about this. " Gusty asked, fascinated by what he was hearing.
"Learned about bell, rune stones and key...from time around Grogar, took long time...found key hidden under brick in Grogar's... treasury... key matches the lock on his collar. "Ulmara said recalling how she found the key.
"This...this is amazing with this Equestria can finally be free of Grogar! Thank you Ulmara!" Gusty said excitedly, reaching for the key with his magic.
"Not so fast Gusty...me want something in return." Ulmara said, quickly closing her clawed paw around the key.
" What, I thought you were giving me the key. " Gusty said confused.
" Me will...but me want...insurance that me is not seen as threat to...Equestria and... me want Gusty's word that this will not be...traced back to me. " Ulmara said, her face showed that she felt scared.
Seeing this Gusty placed his hoof on Ulmara's large clawed hand reassuringly.
" You took a chance searching for a way to beat Grogar, and you trusted me with this information. You've more than earned my trust, I will make sure that Grogar won't know and I'll only tell of you after he is defeated it will be a legend told throughout the ages. " Gusty said smiling, showing he was genuine with his words.
"Ha! well that is nice of you, just don't mention my name in the legend...just in case." Ulmara said smiling, showing her fanged smile.
"Promise, cross my heart stick a cupcake in my eye!" Gusty said smiling as he went through the motion.
"Ahh...what is that? " Ulmara asked confused, cocking her head to the side.
"Hehe it's a pony thing. " Gusty said smiling as he rubbed his head, feeling a little embarrassed.
"Okay? " Ulmara said smiling back.
"Ponies are strange creatures." Ulmara thought smiling, amused by Gusty's antics.
"Well here is key...use it when you get chance to get near his bell...be careful, Gusty might only get one." Ulmara said as she let Gusty take the key into his magical grasp.
"Thank you Ulmara, where will you go after Grogar is defeated?" Gusty asked, placing the key in his saddle bag.
"Hmm, me think me will head to the...southern parts of Equestria... well me need to be on my way...good luck Gusty Winds the pony." Ulmara said as she stood up.
"Alright, and thank you again Ulmara may, we meet again." Gusty said smiling to the massive creature.
" May we meet again...friend. " Ulmara said as she got up and waved with a large wing, heading into the shadows and disappearing without a trace.
