I used my hand to shield my eyes from the sun. I had been inside for the past weekend playing different video games with my friends. I haven't left my house until now. The only reason I was out is because I have a job I need to go to. I barely got any sleep last night so I'm kind of cranky. People were walking by, rush hour really picking up by now. Every day I passed by a jewelry store, an old mom an' pop kind of shop. Sometimes they would do a small sale on a table right out the shop. Today happened to be one of those days. They were selling some bracelets, necklaces, and a few ear rings. What really caught my eye was a weird and familiar slate.
"Have an interest in the throw away?" I looked up to see a man reading the newspaper. He had on a blue polo shirt that all the employee's wear. The paper he was reading had the headline, "DISAPPEARING NERDS ARE AT AN ALL TIME HIGH." I tilted my head for a moment.
"A Throw away?" I asked him. This was the type of shop that didn't call anything a throw away. Something like this could still be turned into something useful. Nothing could be a throw away to them.
"Yeah, no matter what they did it would never break apart. Now they're just selling it for 20 bucks." I looked back down at the slate and back at the man. I pulled out a $20 bill and placed it on the table. I picked up the slate and placed it in my pocket. It was a small slate, easily the size of a small phone. It was when I was passing by an alleyway that I felt a tug. Not a physical one mind you; no, it was a just one of those feelings you get in your chest.
I followed the weird feeling down the alleyway and found something even weirder. It was a random double door. The black completely clashed with the white wall it was attached to. Red intrigant lines were carved into it. In the center of the door the carvings came together to form a circle. Slowly, I placed my hands on both sides of the door and push it open. I was met with nothing but empty blackness. I took a small step forward. The darkness looked like it went on for miles. It wasn't until I heard a creaking behind me that I knew something was wrong. Spinning around I saw, to my horror, the door had closed. I ran back to it, trying to pry it open. I started banging on the door yelling for help. Then, I heard another creak. Turning around I saw another door, identical to the previous one. It was slowly opening to the outside. I ran through it, only to see something that nearly made me cry.
Hills of dead grass covered the land. Sparse trees dotted area, all of them had the leaves caught on fire. I could hear the door behind me close as I fell to my knees. There wasn't a single building in sight.
"Well looky what we got 'ere." Said a raucous voice to my left. I looked over a jumped to my feet. A small 3'5" woman came up to me. She had a slightly long nose, her skin was pale green, and she wore what looked like leather armor. Her hair was a light orange. "What are ya so scared ofv'? I ain't gonna 'urt ya." She pulled out a dagger that looked like a short sword in her hands. "If'n ya give me all ya valuables that is." I pulled out a pocket knife I always keep on me. "What's that lil' thing gonna do t'me?" I ran up and thrusted my knife at her. She easily dodged out the way and kicked me in the shins. I fell to the ground, she quickly held the dagger to my throat. "You ain't gettin' outta this one. Now empty ya pockets." I put down my knife and slowly reached into my pockets. I pulled out my phone, wallet, pen, and the slate. She picked up everything and looked at them. The pen and wallet were useless to her and she threw them back at me. She examined my phone for a few moments. She started messing with the power button and turned it on by accident. "The bloody Tartarus is this shite?" She looked over to me, holding up my phone.
"It's a phone," I answered, "It can tell time and do a bunch of different things. I doubt it'll work here though." She growled lightly before pocketing it. She picked up the slate and examined it. While she was doing that I looked back at the door. It looked just like the first one. The only difference was that there was a small rectangular space in the center of the circle. It was the size of a... small...phone. I looked back at the woman, who was trying to bite the slate. "Hey, Give me back my slate real quick."
She glared at me, "Why should I? I'm t'one that stole it from you."
I rolled my eyes, "I want to see something. Maybe it could open up this door." She perked at that. Looking down at the slate then back to me, she tossed it over. I slipped the slate into the spot and waited. After a few seconds the slate started to glow in a rainbow light. Seven different color orbs came out of the slate. Six of them started to raise into the sky while one stayed where it was. The six that rose flew off in different directions. They seventh one flew forward and into my chest. A warm feeling enveloped me but disappeared just as quickly. I looked at the slate to find seven different locks wrapped around the door. I felt a bash on my head and I fell to the ground.
"NOW LOOK AT WHAT YOU'VE DON'! THE DOor is locked up tighter then... Her voice grew more distant before I finally fell unconscious.
