“Now hush darling. You know I can’t work with you sobbing away like that.” Rarity scored the crying Twilight Sparkle, who had actually just ended her relationship with Princess Luna.

“But Rarity, I don’t even want to go to this Masquerade Ball.” Twilight insisted, however to no avail.

“Twilight, I threw this entire ball together to try to make you feel better. Who knows, you may find a new special somepony there.” Rarity retorted, trying to hide her own frown. It was bad enough to see Twilight like this, but what if she was to find somepony, only to have her heart broken…again.

Twilight sighed and put her head on her crossed hooves in defeat. It was no use arguing with the social butterfly that Rarity was. It wasn’t also wasn’t something a friend like Twilight would do, refusing to go this ball, in which Rarity invited friends from all over Equestria. Maybe she could find a nice city pony from Manehatten or Baltimare….

“Ah-ha!” Rarity interrupted Twilight’s train of thought, “Come over here, would you dear? I just must see this on you before tonight.” She requested. Twilight grumbled something unintelligible as she walked over to Rarity, who eagerly threw the dress over her and made some last minute adjustments.

“Oh it looks so wonderful on you Twilight! Go admire yourself in that mirror…of course, I do still need to make a mask for you, don’t I? It is a masquerade ball…” Rarity answered her own question, talking to herself about design and getting it to correlate with the dress she so generously made for Twilight.

"Wow Rarity. This dress is amazing. You really do spoil me too much." Twilight complimented. Hopefully Rarity didn't notice the sad tone in her voice. Upon further thought, Twilight did come to think that the dress was rather nice, and it would look great on her tonight at the ball.

"Of course it is Twilight, I designed it especially for you." Rarity responded cheerfully from the other side of the room, who was entirely too busy working on the mask to go with Twilight's dress.

"Maybe I will find a new special somepony tonight at the ball." Twilight muttered to herself, looking out the window as the withdrawing sun.

Princess Celestia, co-ruler of Equestria strode down the marble hallways of the Canterlot Palace towards her sister’s private quarters.

“Luna! I have something to show you!” Celestia said cheerfully as she entered Luna’s simple bedroom. It was circular, slowly closing off as you went higher off. It was much more of a dome than a normal room. The floor was covered in a single, custom made dark-blue rug, befitting of the Princess of the Night. The walls were painted a similar color, although a lighter hue. There was a single bookcase, overstocked with scrolls and tomes over Equestrian history and laws. Princess Luna, it seems, is still not entirely caught up with modern time.

“Luna?” The pony in question was lying down on her bed, her face buried into the dark blue pillow. “Are  you still sad about what happened between you and Twilght?” Celestia asked, the worry obvious on her face.

“yes.” The reply was muffled, from Luna having buried herself into the pillows and sheets. It was obvious that she had been crying for some time.

“Luna, I’m sure Twilight meant only the best by en-“

“If she meant the best, she would not have done it in the first place!” Luna cried out in between sniffles.

“Come now Luna. Maybe this will cheer you up.” Celestia handed her a scroll which had yet to be opened. What Luna didn’t know is that this was Celestia's own copy. Several other prominent ponies in the city below them had gotten the same missive.

“’Tia…what…what is this?” Luna asked as she slowly read through the scroll.

“It’s an invitation to a ball. Surely you remember those.” Celestia replied, as understanding struck Luna, “Luna, it isn’t good for you to stay in like this. You should get out there and back on your hooves.”

“Will you be coming with us?” Luna asked, though it was more of a request, so she wasn’t completely alone; she still wasn’t sure about it.

“One of us has to be sober enough to handle court and raise the moon and sun.” Celestia thought to herself a moment, “No, I shall stay here. You need to go enjoy yourself.”

“Well…if you say so ‘Tia….” Luna hugged her sister tightly, but there was still doubt in her voice.

“I had a dress and mask brought up here for you. I hope you find them to your liking.” Celestia said and winked to her sister as she walked out. “And don’t forget to have fun!” She added, though something about her tone suggested that it was the end of the conversation and Luna was going.

Luna sighed as she stood up. Her mane was an absolute mess, and her eyes looked even worse. She groggily walked over to the washroom down the hall, her hooves making that distinctive "Clop....clop...clop.." as she went her way.

She spent about five minutes getting her main into its normal look, and put on a slight bit of make up to make her eyes look a little less red.

By the time Luna returned to her room, the dress had indeed been laid out across her bed, along with the mask her sister mentioned. Luna couldn't help but admire the dress. The sapphires inlaid into the seams made it seems to sparkle the same way her mane did. The dress itself, at the base, was the same dark blue as her mane. It seemed to fit her perfectly. The mask was the same color as her mane, and it sparkled the same way. The dress also seemed long enough to cover the end of her main, as well as suitable and comfortably hid her wings. She still wasn't entirely sure it was going to hide her identity, but if Celestia was so confident that it would make her feel better, then she would do it. For herself, and her sister.
