Chapter IV: Thief of the Heart

Magenta eyes slammed open and the woman quickly moved from the uncomfortable mattress to sit, sighing softly to herself she moved to slip on her dark purple boots which were right beside her bed. Shifting the sheets she shivered when the freezing cold air greeted her tan skin and she moved to pull on a lavender shirt as she was currently wearing nothing but underwear. Glaring at the wall she continued to redress herself before she moved to the bathroom to clean her face and brush her teeth.

“Who turned the damn thermostat down?” She grumbled to herself turning the thermostat up as high as it could go because of her anger with the device. “Living in a stupid snow filled empire…” Adagio grouched out finishing up her brushing as she moved to pull out a winter coat. The Crystal Empire was already much too freezing despite it not yet being winter.

“You’re up early.” A raspy voice said which belonged to her sister Aria. Glancing over at Aria she said nothing feeling too grumpy to entertain whatever game she was trying to play with her. Ever since she left Canterlot, Aria has not let up on her questioning about what she had been doing there. Finding some cereal Adagio poured herself a bowl of cheerios glad that the Empire had been giving the citizens tax breaks or she knew they would have been able to barely afford enough food for an entire month.

“Adagio...” Aria started shifting from the couch to watch her as she ate her cereal quickly. She could tell that Adagio was trying to leave the house as fast as she could but she wasn’t going to let her evade her. Feeling circled Adagio glared at the purple and teal haired woman when she walked to sit at the dining table next to her.

“What?” The siren eventually bit back as she scooped more milk and cereal into her mouth.

“Where did you get the money?” Aria questioned for what felt like the hundredth time. Sighing in irritation Adagio decided to come clean.

“I stole it from a bank.” She said in a deadly serious tone noticing that Aria did not seem shocked or surprised by this statement.

“Stop screwing around with me. I will pester you all day if I have too.” She replied crossing her arms as she leaned into the table. This made Adagio think of when the police interrogated people and that Aria would be a perfect fit for the bad cop role. Mostly though it was annoying her beyond belief to be interrogated like a criminal that she was not anymore. Growling Adagio lifted her gaze from her breakfast to Aria, “If I tell you will you stop bothering me.” She said earning a grin in response. Aria offered her hand to her sister which Adagio took her grip tightening so tight that it probably felt like she was trying to squeeze it off.

“I was meeting a contact in Canterlot. An old one mind you that I needed to get money from. They owed me Aria and no this was not illegal. I simply loaned him an exorbitant amount several years ago.”

Aria frowned at that, “Why were you being so secretive about this? Every time I asked you about Canterlot you were acting so jumpy.” She seemed more curious and confused than anything. Adagio sighed not wanting to tell her what had happened during her stay whatsoever. Feeling frustrated since she was usually much better at keeping her cool Adagio frowned at Aria.

“I just do not like you poking into my business.” She said with venom in her tone before she abruptly stood from the chair so she could throw her plastic bowl into the sink. Shaking her head at Adagio, Aria leaned back into her chair.

“You must be going through PMS because you’ve been a real bitch since you came back.” That was the last straw for the tall blonde who moved to point at Aria who knew she was testing her limits. She may not be their powerful leader anymore but she still commanded respect as the eldest.

“Aria, get off your ass and go to work now!” She yelled out in a tone that left no room for argument. Smiling despite her own irritation at being yelled and pointed at Aria gave her a mock salute.

“Exhibit A.” She mocked ducking when Adagio half-heartedly moved to slap her in the face. Their youngest sibling Sonata came in at this moment from the front door and she threw off her coat so she could tumble into Adagio. Grunting from the impact she blocked her face, amusement bubbling in her chest since Sonata thought they had been mock fighting. Sonata managed to get Adagio in a headlock before the taller woman slipped out of it. She smiled as she set her boot on Sonata’s rising and falling chest.

“Aw! No fair!” She called out saddened that she had been defeated so easily. “Stay down pup.” She said pretending Sonata was a dog to mess with her.

“If we’re done with the alpha act, I am going to work.” The second eldest said moving to take Sonata’s keys since she was still on the floor. Sonata frowned up at Adagio giving her puppy dog looks so she would free her. Doing just so since she had a slight soft spot for her sister, Adagio watched as the door slammed behind Aria.

“Ohhh, what did you do to piss her off?” The blue haired woman asked, dusting her working clothes off since she would need to wear them again the next day. Adagio shrugged in response, “When isn’t she angry about something?” She commented playing the fool to avoid having to reveal to Sonata why she was in Canterlot. They always made her feel like she was the bad guy even when she was trying to make certain they all survived. The two of them had really taken to the straight and narrow but Adagio was struggling to avoid the money they had gained through their past exploits.

“That’s true but she left without saying goodbye!” Sonata said with a slight whine leaning against the couch as she released her hair from the hat she was wearing. Adagio chuckled in reply, “Go to sleep Sonata and don’t worry about what your grumpy older sisters do.” Sonata shrugged at her with a smile playing on her lips.

“You should tell me about who you’re seeing at some point.” She remarked the statement hitting Adagio like a freight train. Feeling extremely confused by this she looked to Sonata but she had her back facing her as she went to get a drink.

“What are you talking about?” She could not help but ask finding that she was indeed not seeing anybody. After all, she could not possibly know about…

“Aww come on! You’d think I would know when one of my sisters got lucky! So I figured it was somebody you know in Canterlot.” Sonata said her voice brimming with excitement. This caused her to pause realizing she did not give Sonata enough credit because she could be very insightful and detail-oriented sometimes.

“I don’t know anyone in Canterlot like that.” She said in a testy tone which Sonata seemed completely unfazed by. Moving to lay on the couch Sonata laughed, “Okay, okay you don’t have to tell me who the lucky girl is.”

Feeling alarmed Adagio moved to the couch to look Sonata in the eyes, raising a brow Sonata munched on a candy bar looking up at her sister in confusion.

“What?” She questioned appreciating that Adagio’s form was blocking out the sun which had been blinding her through the blinds. “Where are you getting at?” Adagio asked crossing her arms as she hunched over her with threat in her voice. Rolling her similarly magenta colored eyes Sonata shook her head at her. Her voice was garbled from the candy as she spoke, “Nothing, but now I know that you did get with a lady if you’re so secretive about it.” Frowning at that, Adagio huffed shifting away in annoyance because what she had said was true.

“I did not sleep with anyone while I was in Canterlot!” Adagio fired back trying to silence Sonata who seemed to get the message just then.

“Alright, then maybe you should find someone…” However, towards the end of Sonata’s sentence Adagio fled the house to get away from her infuriating sisters and their ridiculous questions. Watching Adagio’s fleeing figure Sonata hummed to herself before she pulled out her phone to play some Candy Crush.

A train pulled up to the Crystal Point station and unbeknownst to the siren there within the multi-colored train was the last woman she wanted to see. She happened to miss the seven girls and boy who got off the train station as she walked through the snow in a hurry to a coffee shop. Stuffing her cold hands into her pocket Adagio slipped into line to get the warm coffee she desired. They typically did not spring for fast food or expensive drinks too often but with the morning she’s already had she felt deserved a pick-me-up. Looking up to the sign to make a decision Adagio shivered when an individual shoved past her, anger welling up in her chest she bit her tongue to avoid telling them off for being inconsiderate. She was a lit fuse most of the time she knew but she also knew how to behave in public.

“Welcome to Ponybucks, what can I get for you today?” A voice asked her which belonged to a chipper worker who was all smiles this morning. It only worked to lift her mood up only slightly as she ordered her drink watching as she wrote ‘Adagio’ on the cup with nice cursive lettering. There was even a small heart that she noticed which she caused the blonde to smirk when she caught the worker’s eyes. Winking at the girl, Adagio took the drink which she had quickly put together for her, their hands purposely touching which caused the girl to blush at her.

Moving away after that fun interaction, Adagio found a seat and she idly sipped the coffee while she looked outside. Besides all of the snow that was beautiful as it glittered under the sunlight it seemed to always look like that way here which made Adagio miss greenery such as trees that weren’t crystal, flora, and flowers. Sure flowers bloomed here that were a sight to see but the flowers here in the Empire were nothing like lilies or daisies, nor were there any of her favorites in the shops like geraniums. The specific violet flower that she had conjured up in her mind had unwittingly made her think of Twilight who she had been trying to put out of her thoughts.

Not much of that night had conjured up into her memories but slight moments did which seemed to signify that the night she had spent was indeed in the same bar Twilight and her friends had gone too, and yet somehow none of them but a drunken Twilight had noticed her. Next thing she knew they were laughing about some dorky fact Twilight had said but Adagio could have sworn she was so drunk she hadn’t even recognized Twilight, but then again when she thought about it Twilight was wearing a disguise so as to be left alone by the paparazzi and public who would love to snap pictures of a drunk and partying Princess. The real question then was why did her friends leave her unattended and what had Twilight done to charm her so? Had they had a good conversation because they had no idea of their intertwined past? In Adagio’s mind there was no way the two of them had something in common but in truth Adagio really did not know much about the Princess besides that she could be annoyingly optimistic and naïve. When pondering about it Twilight was a beautiful woman which she had to begrudgingly admit in her mind knowing she wouldn’t be able to admit it out loud. She had an amazing figure for someone who seemed to be the introverted and reserved type and she also had eyes that matched amethysts that Adagio had seen in the past. Realizing that she was thinking about Twilight Sparkle’s eyes she drank more of her coffee hoping the burn down her throat would get rid of the insanity that was her actually admiring Twilight.

“Why am I thinking about her anyway…” Adagio growled out nearly jumping when the girl that had taken her order had appeared in front of her. Offering her what she probably thought was a flirty smile she asked Adagio if she needed another drink. Refusing the offer since she did not want to spend more than she had she was surprised that she was willing to give her another cup on the house. Smiling in return Adagio adopted a sultry look which earned her a drink quicker than she could blink. Thanking the generous waitress Adagio drank more of her favorite coffee glad to know that flirting could still get her things she wanted. Glancing out the window again the drink got stuck in her throat causing Adagio to sputter, covering it up with a cough which hurt since it was hot coffee Adagio was glad to find cold water that had been set on the table. Taking a sip she steeled her nerves upon seeing Sunset Shimmer. She had not expected to see her here. Watching her discreetly she noticed that Sunset was walking with Rarity which meant the rest had to be somewhere. Worried that they were in town she hoped that she would be able to completely avoid them when she left.

They were visiting the Princess and Prince no doubt, Adagio thought knowing of Twilight’s relation to Prince Shining Armor immediately upon meeting him. She had met him upon bad circumstances but it was due to him that the Sirens were allowed citizenship within the Crystal Empire. Even if he looked at her like she was an ant he could step on.

Sighing Adagio got up from her seat not waving to the girl that had given her the extra drink as she left the establishment. Trudging through the snow covered streets Adagio kept her head down making certain she was a far enough distance when she saw more of the women who had stopped the Sirens from their domination of Canterlot. It had been unexpected since they had been laying in wait in the shadows but Twilight, Sunset, and the others had reacted quickly once they noticed how many they had entranced. The feeding had been the main objective but a lot had changed when she and the girls had found out they could make a mass amount of people become like sheep, doing their bidding without their free will. Shaking her head to herself she closed her eyes trying to forget about the rainbow sensation that had taken all of that away. It had been a dark place the Sirens had been creating but it was much like missing an part of themselves to be unable to sing anymore.

Darkened thoughts flooded her mind and she opened up her eyes to see the Crystal Heart. Somehow in her reminiscing she had walked all the way into the center of town a sort of auto pilot routine when she was feeling upset about something. She did not know what it was about the crystalline heart sculpture that enraptured her but she had been taken with it as soon as she had entered the city. It glowed with power but Adagio enjoyed the structure which was bigger than a horse and probably weighed a ton if someone were to try to lift it. Those with magic she knew could likely lift it with their telekinesis but it was something to think about other than her problems in life. Sighing which expelled into the air due to the cold temperature she hugged her arms glad she had grabbed a scarf on her way out of the house. It was in the lesser neighborhoods of the Empire but the kingdom in its entirety was astounding even if there were people going hungry within its walls. Adagio knew a lot about governments and their empires as long ago she and her sisters had seen many fall to strife in time, but now with the addition of Cadence and Twilight, as well as the Tree of Harmony. Life was actually peaceful in Equestria. Shaking her thoughts away, Adagio turned only to lock eyes with the very amethysts she had thought of. Heat flooded her face and chest upon seeing the Princess and she stood stock still trying to process how she had not noticed that they had walked up on her. She was an idiot for standing out here in the open in the freezing cold thinking about peace, governments, and Princesses that had ruined the only life she knew. Perhaps she put too much blame on other people.

"Hi Adagio." Sunset started as an awkward tension flooded the air. She was standing next to Twilight who had frozen in a similar stance. She was wearing a long violet coat with white fur and pink fur boots that matched her hair which had grown a lot from two years ago when Adagio had first seen the girls. Squinting at Sunset and the others she frowned kind of liking that she was making them all so uncomfortable. She had thought she had told Twilight to stay away from her and here she is standing in front of her with her friends gaping at her like a fish. A smile grew on her face at that because perhaps she could have fun with this if she was not too obvious.

"Hello Sunset, it's so nice to see you again." Adagio purred out in the most seductive velvety tone she could muster. Twilight did not have a visceral reaction but she walked closer which caused the taller woman to tense.

"It is?" Sunset questioned not taking notice of the reactions that Adagio was invoking in her friend. Starlight suddenly stepped forward seeming to perceive Adagio as a threat.

"You're that Siren they told me about." She said crossing her arms with a challenge in her violet eyes. Sensing this Adagio looked at her, "And who are you?" She asked with slight hostility truthfully having never seen or heard of Starlight. This earned another reaction from a shorter girl who was wearing a large hat and Adagio almost burst out laughing since the blue haired women was actually wearing a cape. It was unique and something about this was comical. Perhaps it was sinister but seeing them actually lifted her soured mood.

"I'm-" Starlight begins only for Twilight to interrupt them. "I'm sorry but we really need to hurry. Please excuse us Miss Dazzle." Twilight said interrupting whatever snappy comeback Starlight was going to offer. Slightly surprised by the formality Adagio glanced to the other girls who were either avoiding looking at her like Fluttershy or were giving her glares. They seem to hold grudges for a group that boasted about friendship, Adagio thought knowing she wasn't helping her situation by being rude.

Watching the women walk past her she noticed that Twilight was giving her nervous glances and Adagio could only watch them go in silence. A thought had suddenly occurred to her that Twilight seemed to act like she was attracted to her and it was easy for her to notice because of how Twilight's eyes would rake over her even though it would be perceived as wrong too be eyeing someone who was not your spouse. Maybe to her surprise Twilight had liked being the naughty one. The one to cheat and do things bad for once. It seemed so out of character for miss goody two shoes who never did wrong to anyone she came across if she could help it. Adagio then could only come to rationalize that Twilight must not be happy with her relationship and perhaps she needed some help with that. Her grin fell at that and Adagio knew she would not do that because she did not have it in her to do. She had been evil and cruel to many but to destroy a marriage well that was not something easy to stomach, and yet the feelings weighing in her gut nagged at her. She was unsure of what it was exactly but apart of her thought it was loneliness because what happened with Twilight was the first in a decade. Her past self had been too occupied with world domination and revenge against Starswirl that not once on those lonely nights when she stayed up did she think about finding a lover. Alas a one night stand was exactly that a one time event for the two people to remember or deeply regret and Adagio absolutely knew that it was the second option for Twilight. She likely despised Adagio for what she had done to her and she was probably cursing her name for taking away her innocence. At least that was what she imagined Twilight to say to her if they were ever to speak again, not that it would happen. Confusion rushed through her because a small part of her wanted to talk to Twilight and figure out what was happening to her. She was not naïve enough to think that would be a good idea but Adagio's troubled mind was disturbing to her. For whatever reason she liked how delicate Twilight had been with her and how she had made her laugh on one of her most somber of nights. A night she had been trying to drink it all away so she would not remember that she was a failure. Twilight's laughter rang in her ears and she smiled as pieces of the picture came together. She may not have known the woman she was with was Twilight Sparkle but she could no longer deny that she had liked what had happened in some way.

"I think I need a therapist because I am actually thinking fondly of her." Adagio said aloud as she walked towards the shopping center which she had planned to get groceries before the events before had transpired.

Chuckling the Siren tried to forget about seeing Twilight but she could only think about what she had already seen of her that night. Her skin, the nervousness, and sensuality of it all. Feeling weighed down by these thoughts Adagio fought away her blush as she shopped. She whistled a tune within the store glad it was comfortably warm inside as she plucked the necessities and a few extra items for her own enjoyment. Despite the inability to sing, her fondness for music did not go away so Adagio found a smile playing her lips when she spotted a particular album that she adored. At the house, they had an old cd player that still worked so getting a CD wouldn't be the worst of ideas. Grabbing a couple she waited in the line which was its usual mundane routine. Within a few hours of shopping and her thoughts finally leaving the Princess everything had returned to its comfortable normalcy at this point as Adagio carried the groceries but it all changed when a person ran into her knocking all of the bags and the basket she was walking down into the ground. Falling into the snowy ground Adagio groaned in pain. Suddenly shock shot through her when she saw that the person who had knocked her down was trying to mug her.

Thinking that she must have the worst luck in Equestria, Adagio fought back trying to kick whoever it was in the shin with her heeled boot. She managed to hit them in the leg but they were stronger than her. Punching her directly in the jaw Adagio let go with a scream which alerted nearby guards to what was happening. The mugger suddenly darted away and she lifted up from the ground shivering a little since she had been left in the snow. Sighing softly two guards stopped in front of her one of them nice enough to help her with the scattered bags while the other peppered her with questions about the assailant.

"I don't know! I was too busy getting mugged!" Adagio eventually shouted out irritation flooding through her since the guard reminded her of Shining Armor with his tone and haircut. Picking up the CDs, Adagio ran a hand through her hair to get rid of the snow that was melting in it.

"I'm sorry Miss, we'll try our best to get him. He's been after women and older women for weeks." He remarked and he was the one who had helped her so it worked to calm her down. "Thank you." Adagio said in a more relaxed and softer tone as she took a few deep breathes. She had never been mugged before so it shook her up a little bit. Blinking she raised a brow when the guard in blue offered his arm. "Can I walk you home Miss?" He questioned her with a mustached smile. He was much too old for her so she felt more comfortable accepting his offer however home was not where she wanted to go now.

"Could you take me to the castle instead?"

Author's Note

So writing Adagio's point of view was very enjoyable. I am writing this out in a fast pace so I apologize if there any issues I may have skimmed over. :)
