Chapter One: The Seed Is PlantedView OnlineRootsChapter One: The Seed Is PlantedGrass Roots awoke to the birds chirping, and the sun shining in his face. His eyes opened slowly, and he made his way out of his bed to get ready for the day. It was Friday, which meant tonight was Guy’s Night, meaning a night of fun for him and his pals. He smiled at the thought of that night before freshening up, and leaving for his booth. Walking down the streets of Ponyville, he thought about how much this town had been through. It was about six years ago when Twilight Sparkle came and shook things up, changing Ponyville and creating memories for the citizens. He thought about all the crazy things that happened, smiling at the randomness of it all. Speaking of randomness, a pink blur sped down Main Street towards the Everfree Forest. He chuckled, Pinkie Pie was up early today. The Elements were all very nice and gracious ponies. They were always helping folks out, and were generally appreciated by everypony. Of course, when he thought of the Elements, he thought of Applejack, the mare who had stolen his heart. He knew she’d never know who he was, but he still appreciated her and was in awe of her presence whenever she was at market. As he thought about everything, Grass Roots entered the market, seeing his fellow vendors setting up for the day. He did the same, cleaning his various fruits and deciding what today’s discount was. He decided on pineapple, and opened for the day. For the first hour or so, the market was quiet with just a few customers. By mid morning, everything was in full swing. He had sold some fruit, made some bits, and was still thinking, when all of the sudden a loud voice called from seemingly nowhere. “EVERYPONY LOOK OUT!” Grass Roots was turned around washing some peaches, not knowing what was going on, until he finally looked forward. There was a cart, the Apple Family cart, speeding down the hill, nopony controlling it. Everypony at the market hid, all except for two. Grass Roots, who was still confused, and a filly licking a lollipop, just enjoying her day. Time sped fast, and soon the cart was getting close to the filly. Grass Roots leaped from his stand and sprinted. Luckily, she was close to his stand, and gently nudged her out of the way. Unluckily, he was now in the way of the speeding cart. The last thing he saw was a close view of the cart, and then blackness took him. ——————————————————————— When he woke up, Grass Roots was in a lot of pain. He also noticed he was in a bed, but not his own. Slowly, he realized he was in a hospital. He wasn’t sure what happened, and tried to think back to what could’ve caused this. In the midst of his thinking, the door clicked and her turned to find a mare in a coat with a clipboard. “Good morning, sleepyhead”, the mare said gently ”, Glad to see that you’re awake. That was some hit you took”. He was confused, and his face showed it: “You don’t remember?”, she asked. He shook his head slowly, not wanting to move too much due to pain. “Well you were manning your stand, and a wild cart came rolling very fast. You saved a fillies life, but got yourself pretty banged up”, the mare said. It all came to him, and he had some questions. “Ma’am? Can I ask you a few questions?”, he asked faintly. “Of course you can, dear”, she said”, By the way, my name is Nurse Healing Heart, and please don’t call me ma’am, it makes me feel old”. She giggled at that, but quickly quieted down so he could ask. “I will Nurse, but I have to ask, who brought me to the hospital?”, Grass Roots asked. “That would be Ms. Applejack, dear. Well, not technically her. As soon as the dust settled on your little accident, she quickly rushed here, told us of the situation, and then our paramedics stretchered you here”, Healing Heart said as she checked his injury chart. “Oh dear”, she said gravely ,”You seem to have small sprains all over your body. The biggest injury you have is your right arm, you fell on it as the cart hit you and broke it”. He tried to move his arm, and sure enough there was little movement, and soon he saw the cast. Them his mind caught up to him, and his eyes slightly widened. “Wait”, he sputtered out, “WHO went and got the medics?”. “Applejack, dear”, Healing Heart repeated His heart began to beat slightly faster, and Nurse Healing Heart saw he’d changed slightly. “Are you alright?”, she asked with concern. “N-No, I’m fine. It’s just, uh, nothing. I don’t really like hospitals”, Grass Roots tried to lie. “Oh, I’m sorry dear. We’re going to do everything we can to help you heal fast. Anyway, I’m going to get some painkillers, you wait here”, Healing Heart said before trotting off. He was left to his thoughts once more, and his heart was racing. Applejack has gotten him help, which meant that she’d noticed him. There was a lot on his mind when Healing Heart came back in a few minutes later. “Alright dear, let’s get these in you”, she said. He took the pills and settled back into his bed. As he sat and thought, another nurse came in and whispered something into Healing Heart’s ear. “Well it seems you have a visitor, Grass Roots. They’ll be here in a moment”, she said to him. A minute later, Applejack came into the room. She had a look on her face that made him hurt a bit. Instead of the smile he’d seen all the time, there was a look of guilt and sadness on her face. “Uh, hi there mister”, Applejack said slowly, “Ah’m really sorry that this happened. Big Macintosh startled one of our cattle, and it latched itself to our cart. Well, about halfway to town, the cow broke free and sent our cart comin’ towards the market, and....Ah’m real sorry about what happened”. Grass Roots was a bit awestruck at her presence. The mare who’d never noticed him was here, speaking to him. To be fair, it was because her cart had injured him, but it was still big to him. “Uh, you ok there?”, Applejack asked worriedly. He shook himself from his daze, meeting her gaze. “Y-Yeah, I’m fine. It’s, uh, no big deal. It was an accident. I hope you don’t feel bad”, he said sincerely. “Ah do feel bad, sugarcube. Your booth got destroyed, and your all banged up. Ah saw how you saved that filly, that was mighty heroic of ya’ to do that”, she said perking up slightly at the end. “That means a lot coming from you, Ms. Applejack”, he said with a small smile. “Now, aren’t you polite? Ya’ don’t have to call me that, not after what happened”, She said while blushing slightly. Soon, the door opened to reveal Healing Heart, carrying an I.V. “Hello there Applejack, seeing our hero here?”, she said to the farmer. “Ah am, nurse. Ah just feel plum awful at all that’s happened. It’s not just his injuries, his booth was destroyed. Ah feel super bad for that”, Applejack said sadly. “Applejack, it wasn’t your fault. Don’t beat yourself up over it, ok?”, said Grass Roots. “Ok, sugarcube, I won’t. Anyway, Ah need to ask you something”, the farmer asked. “Sure, ask away”, he said back. “Ah hope Ah’m not sounding’ rude, but ah don’t actually...Well...Know your name”, Applejack asked with a embarrassed blush. Though it made him slightly sad, he wasn’t offended. “Oh, well my name is Grass Roots. I sell fruit”, he said. “Well, it’s nice to me ya Grass Roots. This may be the first time Ah’ve met ya, but Ah can tell that your a brave stallion. I’ll visit tomorrow, and we can talk more then, Ah’ve got some work ah need to get done. Take care, Grass Roots”, Applejack said, tipping her hat as she left. He was still in a daze as she strode off, and Healing Heart noticed. “I’d say that you think very highly of her, don’t you dear?”, she asked with a grin. He nodded, his shy demeanor telling her more than his words could. “Thought so”, she started, “I was once like this too, and she ended up being my wife. I know that you think highly of her, and from what it looks like, this is the first time you two have spoken. I think that from an accident, may bring a great purpose”, she said and then began to exit the room, “I’m going to let you rest, dear. Have a good night”. He said goodbye, and she turned out the light, leaving the stallion alone with the moon and himself. He drifted into slumber with a smile, there had been a change after all.
Chapter Two: NutrientsView OnlineRootsChapter Two: NutrientsGrass Roots awoke the next morning, not feeling better physically, but feeling uplifted mentally. Applejack had finally noticed, and seemingly enjoyed his presence. He wasn’t getting his hopes up, but at least she knew who he was. After about ten minutes of looking at the window, Nurse Healing Heart came into the room with a fresh I.V. bag and some painkillers. “Good morning, dear”, she said, “How are you feeling?”. “I feel about as fine as I can right now. Thank you for what you’ve done”, Grass Roots finished with a smile. “It’s my job, but thank you. It makes me happy to see our patients be happy”, Healing Heart said as she changed the I.V. He took the meds and Healing Heart left the room, leaving him to his thoughts. He sat there for a good hour or two, thinking mostly of Applejack, when his door opened to reveal his three best friends Noteworthy, Caramel, and Stitch. “Hello Roots, how are you feeling? That was a pretty rough hit”, Noteworthy asked. “I’m feeling decent, Notes. Thank you for asking”, Roots said smiling back. “It’s good to see that you’re positive, Roots. Celestia knows Ah couldn’t deal with what you’ve been through”, Caramel piped up sympathetically. “Well Mel, you’re tougher than am, so I think you’d be fine”, Roots said back. “Well, I for one think that he’s very brave. Saving a little filly like that isn’t easy, you know? Bravo, Roots!”, said Stitch. “Thanks, Stitches. It’s always good to hear your encouragement”, Roots laughed. He smiled at the three of them. They always knew how to cheer him up. Whether it be Noteworthy’s witty humor, Caramel’s infectious positivity, or Stitch’s flamboyant banter, it always brightened him up. “Say Roots”, Caramel spoke, “Ah heard Big Mac talkin’ about how it their cart than ran you over, and that Applejack had come to see you”. “Wait, really? Applejack came to see you?! That’s wonderful!”, Stitch said in his usual manner. “My my, it seems that our boy was finally noticed. So, how’d it feel?”, Noteworthy asked. Grass Roots looked very embarrassed, but spoke anyway. “If I’m honest, I was in a daze. I’ve thought so much of her for so long that hearing her say my name was like a dream come true. I’m not getting my hopes up, but it sure made me feel good”, he said with a bashful smile. “Oh my, that’s so fantastic! I’m so glad she finally noticed”, Stitch congratulated him. “Thanks Stitches, but she was just checking on me”, Roots said back. “Roots, Ah’ve know Applejack for quite a bit, and the way she looked this morning when she talked about you was very unlike her. Ah couldn’t read her, nopony could actually. Ah don’t like makin’ assumptions, but something’s up”, Caramel informed. Roots face changed to faintly hopeful expression. “Roots, my boy, I think things have changed for you. Remember what I told you? That good things come to those who wait? Well, the wait might be over”, Noteworthy encouraged him. He thought it over, and a small smile came on. “You might be right, guys”, he started, “ Anyway, how was Guy’s Night?”. ——————————————————————— His friends had certainly brightened Roots up after their visit. They told a hilarious story about Stitch and a waiter that nearly made Roots spit his water, and in the end they left laughing. They had been gone for about three hours when Healing Heart entered the room. “Hello Grass Roots, how are you feeling?”, she asked as she removed his current I.V. “I feel good, thank you. My friends were here to check up on me, so that was fun”, he said happily. “That’s great, dear”, Healing Heart said, “You know, I saw Ms. Applejack entering the lobby when I was on my way here”. He peeked up, causing the nurse to giggle. “She’ll be here any moment”, she said. It was at that time that the door opened, revealing Applejack. She smiled as she entered the room, filling Roots’ heart with light. “Howdy there, Grass Roots. Howdy, Nurse, how’s he doing?”, Applejack asked. “He’s doing fine, Ms. Applejack. Say, I have to tend to more patients, I’ll be back in a little while”, she winked at Grass Roots as she left. Applejack then sat beside his bed and began to speak. “Well, Ah hope you’re doin’ a little better than yesterday”, she said to him. “I feel a bit better, my friends were here earlier to check on me. They were full of laughs, as usual ”, he chucked. “Say now, tell me about your friends. They sound very funny”, Applejack asked of him. They talked for about twenty minutes, laughing about various wild stories, until Applejack spoke up about something. “Listen Grass Roots”, she said gently, “Ah talked with the market owner, and he gave some news Ah think you might want to hear”. “See, he said that due to the destruction of your booth, he was terminating the position. In other words, sugarcube, he fired you”, she said with disgust. Grass Roots looked very shocked. “Ah gave him a piece of mah mind, but he was very sure of himself. He said that your booth wasn’t a priority, and he was going to lay you off yesterday in person, but all of this happened. Ah’m sorry, Grass Roots”, Applejack apologized. “Why are you apologizing, Applejack? He was going to fire me anyway. Sure, it hurts seeing as how I’ve had that job for a long time, but it doesn’t bother me much”, he said calmly. “You’re a very strong stallion, taking this all in stride. Ah have a proposition for ya, if you’d like to hear”, Applejack said. He nodded, and she began. “Ah heard from your boss that you were always good for tending to fruit. One of our farmhands quit, and mah family decided to offer you his position after you recover. It’s the least we could do after all this happened”, Applejack said. “So what do you say, Grass Roots”, she asked, “You willin’ to work for us after you’re better?”. He thought it was a dream at first, but realized it was reality. After an awkward pause, he spoke. “I’d love to work for you, Applejack. I’ve always enjoyed your family’s apples, so making sure they grow right would be a pleasure for me”, he said back with a smile. “Ah’m glad you agreed, sugarcube. Ah have to say that ah was nervous to come here, and to ask you if you wanted to work. Ah still feel so bad, hurtin’ you like this. If there’s anything Ah can do, Ah’ll do it”, Applejack said honestly. Grass Roots nodded the spoke. “Well there’s one thing I’d like, actually”, Roots said. “Sure, what is it?”, she said asked. “My friends call me Roots, you can call me that too I’d you’d like”, he said with a grin. She smiled too, making him feel great. “Ah’d like that, Roots. Ah better get going, work has to get done. It was nice to see you again, Roots. Ah was actually hopin’ we could end up friends, looks Ah don’t have to worry anymore”, She admitted. He was over the moon when she said that, and quickly took to answering her. “I’d like nothing more, Applejack. I’ll be your friend”, he said happily. She smiled, tipped her hat, and walked out. Smiling, he looked outside to the outdoors, where the afternoon sun bathed a flower bed in sunlight, feeding them the nutrients they needed.
Chapter 3: Roots of FeelingsView OnlineRootsChapter 3: Roots of FeelingsApplejack trotted down the road towards Sweet Apple Acres, a relived smile spreading across her muzzle. Grass Roots was doing fine, and it was surprising how positive he was after all of this. Tomorrow was going to be interesting. It was all very strange, how a stallion could get hurt badly, lose his booth, and then get fired in a span of two days and still have a smile on his face. His positivity was very contagious, that was for sure. As she entered the farm, she spotted Big Macintosh and Caramel standing by the barn having a talk, and she decided to say hello. “Howdy, fellas!”, she called to them as she got closer. They looked towards her and smiled, waving at her as she got to them. “Hey there, boys, what’s goin’ on with y’all?”, she asked them: “Well, Ah was just telling Big Mac about my friend, Roots”, said Caramel. “Wait a minute, you know Grass Roots?”, Applejack asked with surprise. “Oh yeah, Ah’ve known him for years. He’s one of my best friends. Noteworthy, Stitch, and I all visited him today. He was looking positive, that’s for sure”, Caramel said back. “Ah see, well Ah visited him too. Ah did yesterday too, but he was in much better spirits today. He told me to not feel bad about all this. Ah tried, but Ah still do, honestly. Ah had to deliver some bad news to him, though”, she looked ashamed as she spoke. “What’s the bad news, AJ?”, Big Mac asked. “Well, see after his booth was destroyed, the owner of the market terminated the position”, Applejack sadly said. “They fired him?!”, Caramel asked loudly. “Yeah Mel, they did. That made me feel horrible, but he took it in stride. Ah then made him an offer. Last night, Ah spoke to Granny about all this, and she brought up how one of our farmhands quit, and suggested that we give Grass Roots the job”, Applejack explained. Caramel and Big Mac seemed very content with her story and the offer. “Ah think we should”, Big Mac spoke up, “Ah remember seeing him a few times, he really knows how to take care of fruit, always making sure they’re fresh, ripe, or clean. He’s perfect for this job”. “Ah agree with Mac, he deserves it”, said Caramel. “Well luckily for y’all, he accepted. Ah don’t actually know when he’ll be recovered, but Ah plan to visit everyday to check on him”, Applejack said. The two stallions nodded, and the three split off to their own work. After a few hours of bucking, cleaning apples, and sorting them, it was dinner time. As everypony sat at the table and enjoyed our meal, Granny Smith spoke up. “Ah have to ask you a question, Applejack, did Mr. Roots accept our offer?”, she asked her granddaughter. “He did, Granny. In fact, he was very positive despite his firing and circumstances. It was honestly a bit inspirin”, Applejack admitted. “He’s always been that way”, Caramel spoke up, “He barely lets anything get to him, and Ah’ve only known one thing that does get to him”. “What might that be, Caramel?”, Applejack asked. Caramel then remembered his friends secret, and thanked his lucky starts that he didn’t blurt it out. “Well, uh, I promised not to tell anypony. It’s very personal to him”, Caramel recovered. “Well alright, Ah ain’t gonna pressure you. It surprises me that something can get to a stallion that’s as strong as him”, Applejack said. Caramel nodded and dinner went on as usual. After the table was cleaned, Applejack found herself sitting at the table, thinking about Grass Roots. Her mind wandered to the way he looked at her, and she noticed that he always looked like he was in awe of her. She didn’t understand, so she decided that tomorrow, after her visit, she would visit Rarity. If there was any mare that knew about this kind of thing. ——————————————————————— “I just think she’s amazing, Notes. Everything about her is very lovely, and I mean everything”, Grass Roots said to Noteworthy. Noteworthy was visiting Roots in the mid morning of the next day, and they were discussing the recent presence of Applejack. “Man, I don’t know what’s gotten into you all of the sudden. I haven’t heard you talk like this in years. What’s in those painkillers, huh?”, Notes joked. “Very funny, Notes. I’m sorry if I seem a bit lovestruck, it’s just I never thought she’d know my name, let alone be my friend. It’s all very surreal to me”, Grass Roots admitted. Noteworthy laughed a little. “Yeah, I understand. I’m happy for you, Roots. Though, I’m sorry it had to happen like this”, Noteworthy said. “Why is everypony saying sorry? Sure, I bruised myself pretty bad and I lost my job, but some good came from it right? Not only with Applejack, but I get a better job too!”, Roots said excitedly. “What do you mean? You lost your job?”, Noteworthy asked. “Well, after I found out about my job, Applejack offered me a job working on her farm. I accepted, seeing as how I love their apples”, Roots explained. “Hold on a minute, why did you lose your job? I’m happy for you and everything, but why did your boss fire you?”, Noteworthy’s confusion was clear. “My booth got destroyed, and he terminated the position. He was actually going to fire me that day, but the accident happened. Applejack found that out, by the way, she went to him yesterday”, Roots explained. Noteworthy nodded, until they heard the room door opened, and in walked Applejack. “Howdy, Roots”, she said, then soon noticed Noteworthy, “Uh, hello there. Ah don’t believe Ah know you, who might you be?”. “My name is Noteworthy, I’m Roots’ best friend. I’ve heard a lot about you, Ms. Applejack”, Noteworthy politely said. “Shucks, you ain’t gotta call me that. Anyway, how are ya doin’ Roots? Feeling a little better?”, Applejack asked. “Yeah, I’m doing fine. Nurse Healing Heart says that I should be out of here by next week. That’s some good news, right?”, Roots said. “You bet it is! Good to know that you’re healing right. Anyway, I just wanted to see you for a second, Ah have some errands Ah need to run. Take care, you two!”, she said and then exited the room. When she was gone, Noteworthy looked at Grass Roots, and just like he’d expected, he had a big smile. “Well, aren’t you happy?”, Noteworthy asked his friend. “You bet I am, Notes”, Roots smiled. ——————————————————————— About an hour later, Applejack was in front of the Carousel Boutique. She walked into the shop and found Rarity sitting on her sofa, reading a book. “Well, hello Applejack! I didn’t expect you here, today. Tell me, how are you on this wonderful Sunday afternoon?”, Rarity asked. “Ah’m doin’ fine Rares, just needed to ask you something”, Applejack said a bit shyly. “Now, Applejack, you don’t need to be shy. I’m here for you and our other friends. Tell me, what is it you need to ask me about?”, the generous mare asked. “Well first, did you hear about the accident at the market two days ago?”, Applejack asked. “Yes, I do believe I did. The poor fruit vendor got ran over by a cart while protecting a foal. Very courageous of him, I must say”, Rarity said. “Yeah, well...That was mah cart. One of our cows got loose and hitched itself to it, then it got free and sent the cart towards the market, injuring Grass Roots and destroying his booth”, Applejack said sadly. “Oh my! Applejack, don’t feel bad about this, alright? It was an accident. By the way, how do you know his name? I’ve never seen you go anywhere near his booth before”, Rarity asked curiously. “Ah’ve been visiting him the hospital, just checking to see if he’s alright. He said today that he should be out soon. After his booth got destroyed, his boss fired him, so I offered him a job, which he accepted”, Applejack finished. “Well, Applejack, that’s very generous of you. I must ask, though, why come to me with this? Not that I’m complaining, I’m just a tad confused”, Rarity said. “Well, here’s the thing. The first time I went to see him, Ah saw this look in his eyes. It looked like he was in awe of me or somethin’. I don’t know if it was the accident, or if it was something else. Ah still see it in his eyes, even today”, Applejack explained. Rarity perked up and smiled at her friend. “Why are you lookin’ at me like that?”, Applejack asked in confusion. “Applejack, I think he’s infatuated with you”, Rarity said. This took Applejack by surprise. “Dear, it’s nothing to be surprised about. You’re a very good looking mare, what stallion wouldn’t find you attractive?”, Rarity said supportively. “Rares, Ah’m more surprised that he’d have a crush on me. I ain’t never seen him around before, so how would he know me?”, Applejack asked. “Does he have a green coat and yellow hair?”, Rarity asked. Applejack nodded. “Well then yes, I know who you’re talking about. As long as I’ve been here, he’s been here as well. I believe we went to school together. He’s a pretty good vendor. He’s never pushy or mean, he’s nice and takes care of his product”, Rarity explained. Applejack was really confused. If he had been here all this time, why didn’t she notice? “In fact”, Rarity began, “I believe you put him on a team during Twilight’s first Winter Wrap Up”. Applejack’s eyes widened a bit. She thought back to it, and she remembered seeing a stallion that looked similar to him. Green coat, yellow hair, and a root Cutie Mark. She then remembered that during the chaos, she ran past a stallion stuck in a ditch gutter, again bearing similar features to Grass Roots. “Oh my stars, Ah think Ah left him in a ditch during that”, Applejack sweat dropped. “Applejack, I think he may like you. If it’s awe that’s his eyes, then that proves it. I say when the time is right, you ask him about it”, Rarity suggested. “Hold on, Rarity! Ah don’t even know how Ah feel about him. Sure he’s strong minded stallion and he’s been nothing but polite, but Ah haven’t known him long enough to decide”, said Applejack. Rarity nodded, then an idea came to her head. “How about you and I go to see him together tomorrow? I have all my all order completed, so I have nothing to do”, Rarity suggested. “You sure, Rares? Ah don’t even know if he’ll remember you”, Applejack said. “Well, we were in school together for about twelve years. Maybe he will, maybe he won’t, but I just want to see this look you keep describing”, Rarity explained. Applejack thought about it, and then spoke. “Alright Rares, you can come. I don’t want you mentioning anything, though. Ah know how you are with romance and what not”, Applejack firmly said. “Oh thank you, Applejack! You have my word, I won’t mention a thing”, Rarity said. Applejack sighed; it was gonna be a very interesting Monday.
Chapter Four: A Generous VisitView OnlineRootsChapter Four: A Generous VisitIt was a very nice Monday, as Mondays go, in Ponyville. Grass Roots had gotten a visitor, his friend Stitch, in the afternoon. They were having a talk when Applejack and Rarity entered. “Hey there, Roots. Ah hope you don’t mind, but Ah brought my friend Rarity along. Ah told her about you and she wanted to say hello”, Applejack greeted. “Hello there, Grass Roots, I don’t know if you remember, but we went to school together”, Rarity greeted him. Grass Roots looked at her and remembered her. Rarity Belle, that was her alright. She was still glamorous, but even more now than before. “Well, I’ll be, it’s nice to see you Rarity. I knew you were an Element, but I didn’t expect you here”, Grass Roots fretted. “Well, darling, I just wanted to say that what you did was very heroic. You saved a fillies life. That was very brave”, Rarity complimented. “I know, that’s what I said!”, Stitch spoke up. The two mares looked at him, and noticed that he was dressed very flamboyantly. Rarity immediately noticed. “Oh my, you have very good fashion sense. I like the beret, it fits you very nicely”, Rarity complimented. “Why, thank you! My name is Stitch, and I know you are, Rarity”, He said excitedly. “Is it because I’m an Element, Mr. Stitch?”, Rarity asked. “Well of course, silly! However, I know you more for your fashion. I have to say, your designs are incredible!”, he said to the mare. Rarity giggled at his enthusiasm. “Why thank you! Anyway, how are you feeling Grass Roots? It looks as if you’ve been through the ringer”, Rarity asked. “Well, the doctor said I’ll be out within a week, so there’s that. I’m in quite a bit of pain, but not as much as the previous days. All of the company I’ve been getting makes me feel better, though”, he said. “That’s so sweet! Tell me, are you excited to work with Applejack? Sorry about your job, by the way”, Rarity asked. Applejack looked at her a bit, but then looked away as to not look suspicious. “It’s ok, Rarity. I was going to get fired anyway, so there’s no reason to be spiteful. As for working for Applejack and her family, I have to say it’s an honor. They grow the best apples in Equestria, and I’m happy to help them grow right. Plus, apples are my favorite fruit. It’s a win win, if you ask me”, Roots said as he nodded at Applejack. Rarity could now see the “look” that Applejack was talking about. He looked as if he was seeing a beautiful bird take flight, or a watching a meteor shower. It was clear to her, he had it bad. “Shucks, Roots, it’s the least Ah can do for you. Ah spoke with mah brother and Caramel, and they think you’re the perfect fit for the job. After hearing what you just said, I believe them even more”, Applejack said bashfully. “I’m glad you see like that, Applejack”, Roots said happily. The rest of the mares visit went very well. Stitch and Rarity hit it off pretty, seeing as how they both had a deep love of fashion. Applejack and Roots had nice conversation about apples. When the two mares and Stitch left, he spent the rest of the evening wistfully relaxing until he let sleep take him
Chapter Five: A New BeginningView OnlineRootsChapter Five: A New BeginningThe week flew by fast, and soon Grass Roots found himself at Sweet Apple Acres, arriving in the morning for his first day of work. He strolled through the gates, and took it all in. The orchard was beautiful, and the Apple Family home was beautifully aged. He saw other farmhands, working on various tasks. Then he heard a voice call his name. “Hey, Roots! Over here!”, a voice called from his left. He looked and saw Caramel and a big red stallion standing by the porch of the home. He smiled and made his way over. “It’s nice to see you, Roots! You excited for your first day?”, Caramel asked. “You bet, Mel. I’ve never been more excited for anything”, Roots happily proclaimed. Grass Roots then looked at the stallion beside Caramel, and gulped a bit. He sure was a big stallion. He looked familiar, but Grass Roots couldn’t quite place him. “Oh, where are my manners. Grass Roots, this here is Big Macintosh, Applejack’s Brother and the most hardworking stallion Ah’ve ever seen. Big Mac, this is Grass Roots. He’s the new farmhand Ah was tellin’ you about. He’s very determined, and gets the job done right every time”, Caramel introduced. “Ah remember you”, Big Mac said, “You were the fruit vendor, right?”. Grass Roots nodded, taken back by the stallions deep voice. “You always did a great job tending to the fruit, Ah’d see them every now and then. Glad to know that we have you on the team, Grass Roots”, Big Mac said happily. “Call me Roots, my friends call me it”, Roots said. “Alrighty, Roots. You can call me Big Mac”, the big red stallion said. Grass Roots nodded, and then the three heard the door open, and there stood Granny Smith. “Howdy there, boys. Say, aren’t you the stallion that AJ and Mel have been talkin’ bout?”, she asked as she pointed to the green stallion. “Yes ma’am, I am. Grass Roots is my name, but you can call me Roots if you’d like”, Roots politely said. “Applejack was right, you are polite. Ah like that, Roots. Anyway, Ah suppose Ah should tell you what yer gonna be doin”, Granny said to him. Grass Roots nodded, and she spoke. “Alrighty, so yer job is ta polish and sort the apples that we harvest. Caramel, why don’t you go show him his work space. Granny needs a nap”, Granny said with a yawn. Caramel nodded and led Grass Roots into the barn, where Roots saw a little filly polishing some golden delicious apples, smiling as she did. “Well hi there, Caramel! Who’s the stallion beside you?”, the yellow filly asked him. “Howdy Apple Bloom, this is Grass Roots, he’s the new farmhand. He’ll be polishing and sorting apples with you and the other workers”, Caramel explained. “Ah see, well it’s nice to meet Mr. Roots, mah name is Apple Bloom”, she said adorably. “It’s nice to meet you, Apple Bloom. You look like you’re hard at work”, Roots said to the filly. “You betcha! Ah love helpin’ out around mah farm, it’s what an Apple was born to do!”, she said. Roots and Caramel laughed a bit, and then Caramel said goodbye. “Say, Mr. Roots”, Apple Bloom said, “What does your Cutie Mark mean?”. “Well, my special talent is tending to fruit. My old job was a fruit vendor. I sold fruit for the market”, Roots said as he took a seat beside the filly. “That’s awesome! Mah special talent is helping ponies find their Cutie Marks!”, Apple Bloom said as she moved on to another golden delicious. “That’s a very big talent, and I have to say it’s very unique”, Roots complimented. They talked for two hours as they worked. Apple Bloom learned of the story of how Roots got his job, and Roots learned all about the Apple Family and the Cutie Mark Crusaders. He thought that Apple Bloom adorable, and was already appreciating his new job. Then, Applejack walked into the barn, a fresh basket of apples in tow. “Howdy everypony, how’s everything going?”, she asked the two. “It’s going great, AJ! Roots here is a very good polisher, Ah’ve never seen our apples look so shiny”, Apple Bloom said as she admired a red delicious. “You’re right, Bloom, Ah ain’t seen this much shine to an apple in mah life. Good job, Roots!”, Applejack complimented him. “It’s my pleasure, Applejack. Good apples need good care, especially these. Plus I had a good partner”, he said motioning to Apple Bloom. The filly giggled, making AJ smile. “Well, that’s nice. Say, don’t you have a certain colt to see, Apple Bloom?”, Applejack asked her sister. Apple Bloom suddenly got wide eyed. “Oh man, Snails! Ah gotta get goin!”, she leaped up, “It was great meeting you, Roots! Glad you’re here. Bye y’all!”. The two adults laughed as she sped away. “Ain’t she adorable? I swear, she’s so sweet she could give these apples a run for their money”, Applejack said with a laugh. “Yeah, she’s adorable”, Roots said as he pulled the basket closer, “So, Applejack, how’s the harvest been?”. She looked a bit crestfallen after he said that. “It’s...uh..Well, it’s not the strongest we’ve had. We have less than usual, and we really need more apples if we want to have enough money for winter. To be honest, it’s a bit stressful”, Applejack said sadly. “I’m sorry to hear that about the apples, Applejack. Is there anything I can do to help?”, Roots asked the farmer. Applejack thought for a moment, then spoke. “There’s not much any of us can do, sugarcube”, Applejack looked down at the ground. “Applejack, don’t be sad. It doesn’t suit you”, he said. After he said it, Roots blushes a bit. Applejack was a bit confused, and spoke up. “What do you mean, Roots?”, she asked him. “Well”, he said shyly, “I meant that a sad face on you isn’t what I’m used to seeing from you”. Applejack was still confused, so he explained more. “In the time of known you, I’ve mainly seen you happy. That’s just how I think of you, honestly”, he admitted. Applejack blushed a bit, and sat down. “What else do you think of me?”, she asked him. Roots was blushing hard now, and tried to find the words. “I-I think you’re really strong, Applejack. You’ve saved the world a lot, and you’ve done me and a ton of other ponies a good service. Through this whole thing with my accident, you’ve been nothing but kind to me. I appreciate that, Applejack”, he said honestly. Applejack smiled shyly, making him smile as well. “Roots, Ah’m glad you think of me like that. Makes me wish I got to know you sooner”, she admitted. “Well, I work here now. Maybe we can get to know each other a bit, you know. If you ever have free time?”, he boldly asked. “Ah’d like that, Roots. For now, however, it’s time to work. Ah’m gonna go finish the north orchard, and bring in the last batch of apples for the day. Should take me a few hours. In meantime, you keep doin’ what you do”, she got and began to walk towards the door, until she stopped and looked at him, “Ah’ll see you at dinner, ok?”. “Ok, Applejack”, he said back with a smile. “Please, call me AJ, mah friends call me that”, she laughed a bit. “Ok, AJ. I’ll see you later”, he said to her. She walked away, leaving Roots with a big smile. For the next few hours, Caramel and Big Mac brought in more baskets, and he handled them as such. It was soon dinner time, and Grass Roots found himself at the Apple Family table. They had tomato soup, with an apple pie for desert. There were laughs and stories all around, and overall it was a good night. As he was beginning to leave, Applejack caught up to him as he was walking out the door. “Say Roots”, she said, “Mind if we talk for a minute?”. “Sure, AJ, I don’t mind at all. What is it you want to talk about?”, Roots asked. “Well, Ah was wondering if you’d like to come to Pinkie Pie’s party on Saturday. We’re celebrating Lyra and Bon Bon’s one year wedding anniversary, and she said Ah could bring a guest. What do you say?”, Applejack asked. He was speechless, which Applejack noticed. “You alright, Roots?”, she asked. “Uh, yeah, I’m good. I’ll go with you, AJ. It’ll be good to get out and have fun. Not that this job fun or anything! I me—!”, he was stopped by Applejack’s hoof. “Ah know what you mean, sugarcube”, she said with a laugh, “Ah’m glad you wanna go. It’ll be a good time. Ah’ll see you tomorrow, alright? Take care, sugarcube”, she said and then trotted into to her room. Roots smiled again and made his way home, where he slept blissfully.
Chapter Six: Guy’s NightView OnlineRootsChapter Six: Guy’s NightGrass Roots’ first week as a farmhand went pretty well, and he was making some new friends. Whether it be Apple Bloom, Big Mac, or any of the other workers, he was well liked and appreciated for his efforts. Granny Smith was one heck of a cook, her apple pie was to die for. Roots was certainly enjoying himself. As Friday came, he grew excited for his first Guy’s Night since he got back from his accident. It was going to be great to see all his pals, they were always a blast to hang with. On that Friday, Grass Roots worked very well, and made the various apples truly look beautiful. It was about 4:30 when his shift ended, and saw Caramel sitting by the porch. “Hey Mel, we still up for Guy’s Night?”, Roots asked his friend. “You bet, Roots! We’ve missed you at the bar, so it’s gonna be extra fun tonight. Ah heard that the guys are antsy to see you, too.”, Caramel said happily. Just then, Big Mac and Applejack trotted up to them. Roots and AJ had been talking a bit for the week, telling stories and learning about each other. He’d always heard about her adventures, but to hear it from the mare herself was amazing. “Howdy fellas, what’s up?”, Applejack asked them. “Hey, AJ, Mel and I were talking about our Guy’s Night tonight”, Roots explained. “Well, don’t that sound fun. What do y’all do?”, Applejack asked. “We drink and tell stories down at the Berry Punch. It’s quite the night, Ah’ll tell you that”, Caramel added. Roots then noticed Big Mac, and had an idea. “Hey, Big Mac, why don’t you join us? I’m sure the guys wouldn’t mind”, Roots asked the big stallion. Big Mac thought about, then Applejack spoke up. “Say now, that’s a great idea. You should go with them, big brother”, she said to him. “Ah dunno, AJ”, Big Mac said hesitantly, “Ah’ve never gone out drinkin’ before”. “Come on, Mac. Ah promise it’ll be fun!”, Caramel pleaded. Big Mac thought about it, then spoke. “Alright, Ah’ll go”, he said, “Just let me put my yoke up, and Ah’ll be ready”. The other stallions cheered, while Applejack laughed: “Y’all have fun now, you hear? Don’t get too tipsy either. Good night, Roots. Ah’ll be seeing you tomorrow. Come here at 5:30, then we’ll go”, Applejack said before retiring for the night. Roots said goodnight, and when Mac came back they were off for the Berry Punch. It was a good fifteen minute walk to the pub, but they got there. “Well, Big Mac, welcome to our watering hole”, Caramel said as he pointed to the bar. It was an average looking bulging, and it had massive neon sign on the top of the owner, Berry Punch, sipping a martini. They went inside, and were instantly greeted by all the regulars. They welcomed back Roots with hellos, until they heard Noteworthy. “Hey, guys, over here! Come take a seat!”, Noteworthy shouted. They looked over and saw a table full of stallions. There was Noteworthy, Stitch, Time Turner, Lucky Clover, Comet Tail, and finally Thunderlane. They approached the booth and took their seats, to which Thunderlane greeted them. “Welcome back, Roots! We heard about everything you’ve been doing”, he said slyly, “Why don’t you tell us what that may be?”. Everypony at the table was staring at Big Mac, who was looking uncomfortable. Roots noticed, and spoke up. “Hey guys, I’ll do that later. For now, I want to you all to meet Big Mac, he decided to come with us. I hope that’s ok”, Roots said. “Of course it’s ok, mate. Why, we love new friends right fellas?”, Time Turner said to massive response. Big Mac felt a little less uncomfortable, but still kept to himself. They soon began ordering drinks, and quickly began to tell some stories. Noteworthy had been writing, Lucky Clover has gotten lucky with somepony, much to the table’s surprise. “Well I’ll be dipped, Lucky scored! Tell me who was it, Carrot Top? I know you’ve had your eyes on her for awhile now”, Thunderlane asked. “Ah lad, a gentleman never kisses and tells”, the Coltish stallion said has he sipped his brandy. There were some more stories, but it wasn’t until things got to Grass Roots that it got interesting. “So Roots”, Thunderlane said to him, “What’s this I hear about you getting a job at Sweet Apple Acres?”. The whole table perked up, because they knew it was a big deal. The only ones who didn’t were Big Mac and Caramel. “Well, after my accident, Applejack was really sorry and offered me a job. The reason being is that since my booth got destroyed, my boss terminated the position. I’ve been working there for about a week, and it’s best job ever”, he said with a smile. “Does that mean that Applejack has finally noticed you, lad?”, Lucky asked. This made Big Mac very curious, and he looked over to Roots. Roots noticed, and thought about what to do. “Say, Big Mac, can I talk to you outside for a bit?”, Roots asked carefully. “Eyup, Ah reckon you should”, Mac said with some confusing. They went outside, where the conversation began. “What was Lucky talkin’ bout, bout AJ noticin’ you?”, Mac asked with raised eyebrows. Roots sighed, and decided that he should tell the truth. “Mac, I want you to listen, because I mean no disrespect at all. You see, for the last six years, I’ve been...infatuated with Applejack. In my six years working as a vendor, she’d always come to market, but she’d never notice me. Before you ask, no, I didn’t throw myself in front of your cart in purpose. I had to save that filly, and in that moment that was my main concern. Anyway, I had it in my head that she’d never notice, and that’s how things would stay. The guys know about my crush, and that’s why they were shocked, because they know how long I’ve liked Applejack. If you hate me now, or if you want to fire me, I understand. I’m sorry if I’ve upset you”, Roots finished sadly. Mac sat there for a moment, drinking it in, before speaking. “Grass Roots”, he started, “Ah’ve know you for about a week now, and Ah’ve come to know you as a polite, hardworking stallion who gets enjoyment from making mah apples look good. You’re on honorable man, Roots, you really are”. He paused for a moment, leaving Roots unsure. “As for your crush on mah sister, Ah have no problem with it. Ah ain’t the overprotective brother that you might think I am, but Ah’m a little concerned. Ah support you, as long as you don’t break her heart”, Mac finished. Roots was stunned. He managed to speak after about a minute of silence. “Thank you, Mac. I’m glad I don’t have to worry. I’d never break your sister’s heart, Big Mac. If I did, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. I don’t think I’ll even get a chance too, honestly”, Roots said. “What do ya mean?”, Mac asked in confusion. “Well, Mac, I don’t think she likes me like that. We’re friends, but I think that’s all we’ll ever be”, Roots said sadly. Big Mac put his hoof on Roots’ shoulder. “Roots, Ah ain’t no fortune teller, but Ah believe you might have a chance. Ah ain’t never Applejack look at anypony the way she looks at you. She might not know it now, but Ah think she might like you back”, Mac said with a smile. Roots was a bit taken back by this, but he still smiled back. “Come on, Roots”, Mac said as he walked into the bar, “We got some fun to have. Roots smiled; it was gonna be a good night. ——————————————————————— That was probably the best Guy’s Night in history! Time Turner went home with the mailmare, Thunderlane beat a large stallion in a chug off, Lucky went home with another mare, Stitches told the funniest joke of all time, one that doesn’t bear repeating, and most shockingly, Big Mac got hit on by several mares, all of which respected his wishes just to drink. For Grass Roots, it was an important night for his potential relationship with Applejack, as he got Big Mac’s blessing. As he lay in his bed, slightly hazy from the margaritas, he slept soundly, awaiting tomorrow’s party.
