“I don’t suppose I’ve overdressed for the occasion?” She asked of him.

“Tea will be fine, thank you!” Octavia replied before closing the door behind her. Copper waited for her, walking leisurely alongside the taller woman. The hallway was a short path that led to the rest of the house’s main floor, with what looked to be the dining room to her immediate left. To her right was a living room space, a large tv and sofa positioned on opposite walls for easy watching she wagered. Various smells of cooked meats and veggies wafted down to her from the kitchen, which was further on down.
“You know, Copper, I’ve hardly ever been inside your home. It’s always been in the back yard I’ve talked to you and your family.” She noted as she followed him into the dining room. The plates were already arranged and with utensils partially laid out, one half still needing their silverware.
“Crazy when you think about how we’ve been neighbors for forever. But there’s been weirder circumstances out there.” He told her as he proceeded to set the table. “I remember once, Vinyl was practicing on tweaking her equipment outside. The bass blast from her speakers cracked all of dad’s glasses upstairs and made three different car alarms go off!”

The youth paused, then shook his head before looking at her. “I see I’m outclassed a bit here.” He noted, smiling as he followed her instruction. “Anything else that might need fixing?”
Octavia gave the table’s arrangement a once over, practiced eyes looking from each piece to the next. “Your silverware sizes are off, as each piece is supposed to be of the same length and width instead of a multitude of designs. The plates are off from the center by a few inches, particularly the one at the end of the table there.” She gestured with her index finger before continuing, “what sort of meat is your family cooking?”
“...I think beef?”
“Fully cooked, medium well, well done?”

“Did your father cook it with herbs? Spices?”
“Well, maybe, he could’ve-”
“Was the cow well fed? Perhaps of a rare variety?”
Copper’s utterly perplexed expression broke Octavia’s calm, ushering a fit of giggles out of her that made Copper sputter before laughing as he sat his utensils down. “Oh, I see how it is. We invite you for lunch and you decide now’s the right time to flash that classiness, huh?”
Octavia’s laughter eased up and she eyed her amused audience before answering. “Well, I could always flash something else, you know. Especially with this on.” Copper’s confused look got its answer when she made her chest bounce with a roll of her shoulders, causing his eyes to widen. “Nothing underneath, you know.” She whispered, winking at the befuddled boy.
“Food’s ready!” Copper’s father called, or at least Octavia assumed it was him, since there was only one other male in the house. Copper himself had to snap out of his stupor, coming to his senses and hastily finishing his task as his father entered the room. Tanner Spray, or just Tan as Octavia had learned he liked to be called, was a little on the burly side. His skin color was a dark one in contrast with his son and wife, a deep almost amber color that led credence to his name. His dark brown hair had a couple of grey streaks emerging in it, but he seemed to bear all the energy of a man ten years his junior. He wore a white chef’s smock over a button down t-shirt and khaki shorts, and going off his rounded figure, one could guess he was an excellent cook.
“It certainly smells delightful, Mr. Spray.” Octavia noted, giving a courteous bow of her head to the head of the household.
“Hah! That’s the beauty of fine cooking and practice, miss Melody! But please, call me Tan. Ain’t no need for misters and misses today!” He told her. His bright smile made her return one in kind before taking her seat beside Copper.
The meal itself wasn’t anything overly fancy, but the array of meat, vegetables, and a delicious dessert certainly suited the raven-haired woman. The talk during the lunch was pleasant, giving Octavia a peek into the family dynamics Copper grew up with. His father was a joyful soul, always bearing a laugh at a moment’s notice and looking to make light of any idea. Copper’s mother was a little stern, but cared a great deal about her son’s well-being. It made her smile to see Copper be quick to reassure his mom on his decision to go to college here in town, and that he’d try to find a place to live outside the house if it was affordable.
“Well, if you can’t find a spot, maybe miss Melody could help?” Tan’s suggestion made Octavia pause from a sip of her water, while Copper was flustered at first before scoffing.
“Dad, not really a big move to go one house over you know. Besides, in case you forgot, Octavia has a roommate already. I’d be kinda intruding.” Copper reasoned.
“Oh, right, that Vinyl Scratch girl.” Misty noted, gesturing with her fork. “I hardly ever see her, myself.”
“That’s because to see her, you often need to be awake when everyone else is asleep.” Octavia joked. “I only manage it because I live with her. But she isn’t all bad.”
“Well if not that, maybe Octavia here can give you tips on talking to girls again?” The question had Octavia raise her eyebrow while Copper’s cheeks colored and he ducked his head. “Time you get back in the field, son!”
“Dad, c’mon, not in front of Octavia.”
“I bet she could teach you all kinds of practical things. Turn you into a real charmer of the ladies!” Tan declared, not heeding his son’s objection. “Wasn’t there some gal you had your eye on? You were talking before about her.”
Copper’s cheeks darkened, his eyes darting to Octavia as she looked very curious. This was news to her, especially considering their...unique moments alone.
“Hey, look at that, we’ve got empty plates! Excuse me!” He declared suddenly, scooting his chair back and plucking up his plate and several of the other emptied ones, stepping into the kitchen. A moment later, one could hear the sound of water running in the sink, and Octavia turned her gaze to Copper’s mother who shook her head before giving her husband’s shoulder a light tap with the back of her hand.
“Honestly, Tanner. You have no tact.” Misty told him, making the man chuckle.
“Hey, it’s just a suggestion! Not like I’m marrying him off to the highest bidder.”
“It’s the first I’ve heard of this girl.” Octavia remarked, keeping her eyes on the pair before glancing at the doorway leading to the kitchen. “What has he said of her? Perhaps I’ve seen her around.”
“Oh, well, we have no name to go off of,” Misty told her, “but we know he’s got someone better in his mind now that his ex girlfriend, that Rosemary girl, is gone. I’m happy she is, she wore down poor Copper so much. He’s been so happy lately, it just has to be a girl in his life.”
“I’ve tried to get a name out, but he won’t budge on it. Says it’s his private business, and well, I respect that.” Tanner remarked. “I know he fancies someone though.”
Octavia searched her mind, thinking if there was any indicator to line up with what she was hearing. She was not the type to be overly suspicious, but she didn’t get to this point in life on easy assumptions. With her and Copper’s hidden relationship, of course he wouldn’t have told a soul about themselves. But if he did have a girl who had gotten his attention, be it at school or elsewhere, Octavia was going to get right to the bottom of it.
“And how do you know that?” Misty asked her husband.
“Guy talk. He’s told me a little bit about her. Haven’t seen anybody match up with what he said though, not at school.”
Octavia scratched that area off her mental list. “Any specifics?”
“Well…” Tanner glanced over his shoulder, looking to the doorway. The kitchen water was still running. “All I know is,” he turned back to Octavia, lowering to a conspiratory whisper, “he thinks she’s the most beautiful girl ever. A real gem. He says she turns heads everywhere she goes. So I thought maybe, y’know, a cheerleader or prom queen. But none of those girls talk much to Copper at all. He said she’s incredibly smart, a real talented girl, one he admires a lot. Oh yeah!” Tanner snapped his fingers. “She’s a musician! I remember. Got a heck of a thing for music.”
Octavia’s heartbeat eased, and she started connecting some dots. “A musician, hm? A girl who has the discipline to play music is a good sign, surely.”
“Yeah, what was it she played...a violin...or, you know the bigger violin-thing? Honey what’s it called?” Tanner turned to his wife.
Octavia answered for her. “A cello, Tan. I possess one myself. It’s not an easy instrument to wield, but good no less.” Internally, Octavia felt rather pleased. Intentional or not, Copper was enamored enough with her to brag on her to his parents. The illusion of it being someone his age was a good cover, but she could see right through it. “I’ll see if I hear of anything and let you two know if I come across her.”
Tan nodded as did Misty. “Of course we don’t mean to pry like that. It’s his life, after all.” Misty insisted. “Just we want to see our boy happy. He’s gone from my son to my young man so quickly.”
“I assure you, Misty, you’ve nothing to fear for our dear Copper.” Octavia told her, smiling from her thoughts on the youth. “From what I’ve seen, your son has excellent judgment skills. He can take care of things.”
It was at that time that Copper rejoined them, trying his best to look indignant at his parents as he stood by his seat with a huff. Octavia grinned into her drink as Tan offered an apologetic smile as did his wife.
“Well. I think if we’ve had enough dinner chat, I’m gonna go upstairs and relax. I’m still a bit sore from yesterday, helping Octavia.” Copper told them. “And for the record, when I feel ready to tell you two things like that, I will.”
“Of course honey/we’re sorry, son.” The pair said as one. Octavia waved a hand and looked to the young man beside her.
“I’ve never seen your room before. Indulge a woman’s curiosity, would you Copper?” She asked him, making him blink before nodding quickly, catching on as he met her gaze.
“Uh, sure! Just this way.” He told her, waiting for the black haired woman to get up before leading her upstairs to his room. He paused to look over his shoulder and called to his parents, “you two can finish the rest of the dishes like the grown tattletales you are!”
“Low blow son, but fair!” Tan called back, making Octavia snicker. She stayed close behind him, following him into his bedroom and closing the door behind her once they were both inside, clicking the lock in place. The musician had an expectation for Copper’s room to be a little haphazard, but to her surprise, he actually kept things quite clean and proper. No books out of place, the furniture clean and dusted, bed made. The window had the blinds pulled back, giving a view of her house just over the fence.
“Your mother and father are certainly a charming pair.” Octavia commented. Her speaking prompted Copper to move, stepping in front of her and holding his hands up.
“I am, so so sorry. They made it sound bad. I promise, Octavia, I’m not-” the deluge of apologies was held up as Octavia pressed a finger to his lips, smiling at him.
“Relax, Copper. I do admit it caught me off guard, but it didn’t take long to see what the situation was.” She told him before removing her finger to let him talk again. “Honestly, I’m rather flattered in a way. Bragging on me to your parents?”
“They wouldn’t stop asking, after Rosemary was gone. Y’know how parents can be.” He told her. “I said nothing but good things. But I kept anything telling away from them. I didn’t want to. Uh. Assume anything.”
“Assume? Like what?” Octavia asked.

“There hasn’t been.” Copper walked over to join her, making her look from the next door yard - her yard - to him again. His features were concerned, eyes searching hers. The flattery made Octavia’s lips lift into a smile, and she leaned down to kiss him.
