She’d had better days. And, honestly, this wasn’t even one of the worst she’d had so far. Being brought to your lowest point and getting humiliated is hard to match.
But that wasn’t to say what was happening now wasn’t exactly something she enjoyed.
“That low?” she asked, struggling to comprehend the score on her paperwork. “Oh come on, there has to be a way that I can make this up!”
Her teacher, an unassuming man in his late thirties, gave a sigh as he took the time to wipe his glasses on an old cardigan. “Ms. Tiara, I don’t have any extra credit to give, otherwise I would have allowed you access to it. I know this class hasn’t exactly been your best moment, but this is the grade I believe to be a fair assessment of your skills.”
“And you’re just going to screw me over because of this? Just because you’re a grumpy old-” she had to bite her tongue hard to prevent any further insults from streaming out her mouth like the flow of a landslide. It wasn’t fair, it wasn’t right, but it was definitely how she felt. It just wouldn’t be the proper thing to say. She took a breath, releasing a sigh before she spoke again. “... Sorry,” she murmured. “I didn’t mean to do that.”
“Being upset is alright, Ms. Tiara. It at least shows that you care about your efforts here.” Professor Marks looked over her work and took some time to appraise it, perhaps looking for something else to add. He wouldn’t add any additional points, would he? “I understand this is your major, correct?”
“Ye- yessir,” she said.
“Well, compare it to your other class grades so far, and see if maybe you need a major change. You wouldn’t be the first freshman to struggle in their major of choice. Don’t let it bring you down.”
“But I don’t want to fail!” she whined. “I wanna at least pass, what do I need to do to make that happen?”
“You can first take a deep breath. There’s a month and a half before you finals- plenty of time to right the ship and salvage the grade. That’s more than enough breathing room to achieve a passing grade, and then you can use the summer to reevaluate your options.”
“Alright- what do I need to do?”
Professor Marks took the time to think it over before extracting his phone from his side pocket and perusing through the numbers with the effort of a casual stroll. “Tell you what,” he mumbled, “I know a person who’s a teacher and studied in your major, she’s been a person I’ve contacted for other students before. If you’re willing to let me send her your number, I can arrange a meeting for you both and then that should give you a fighting chance. Sound good?”
It sounded good, but the method of making it wasn’t ideal. “I- my parents don’t like me just tossing my number around,” she said doubtfully. Being an heiress wasn’t something she was taught to take lightly; people knew the dollar amount of a last name too well in the world.
“Alright, fair point,” Marks replied. “Here, I’ll give Cheerilee your number and you can give her a call if you feel willing. She’s always been a big help to students when I’ve asked.”
“Yeah, that sounds great, just need to copy it-” the weight of the name suddenly feel upon her with the full force of an anvil and it was all Diamond could do to not stare and gape like an awestruck fool. “Wait, who?”
Unbelievable. I’ll feel like I’m in grade school again, I can’t go through that!
Yes, but if you fail, you’ll feel like an even bigger fool if you didn’t take help when you were offered. Which would you rather have?
It was another episode in her series of embarrassing monologues. Diamond Tiara found herself in the midst of these more than she’d like to admit, a constant battle against her old nature of pugnaciousness and general snobbery. She’d like to think that teenagerdom would have quelled the old urges, but then again, she still was a teenager. No wonder.
And having Mom around, too… Spoiled Rich wasn’t model mother material, and hardly a good example. Shaking her influence, particularly when they all still lived under the same roof, was something of a difficulty.
Diamond sat in her care outside the family mansion, trying to process her own thoughts before she went inside and dealt with the gladiator pit that was her family household. Servants everywhere, an overly genial father, and a spectacularly unsympathetic mother were sure to make juggling her various thoughts feel like a minefield and loathe was she to enter into it. It would be better to make up her mind here in the peace and quiet.
“OK, so… that old bat says I need tutoring. Fine, so what if he’s right? Doesn’t mean I have to do it,” she muttered. “But I do wanna pass… even if my tutor would be-”
And there was the problem. Not the teacher, not the family, not even her future, but her tutor. Someone who had far too many connections to her old life and a way of living that she’d rather forget. It wasn’t something she was trying to remember. Would being around Ms. Cheerilee make it all resurface? Especially if you keep calling her Ms. Cheerilee!
Would she be judged for it? Diamond remembered her time around that old group of people; to say it had been difficult to shake off her old habits was one thing. To make people believe the new ones were real had been even harder, a task in which she still felt like she’d failed. It had been awkward, to say the least. It wouldn’t be nice to have a reminder in the form of a tutor who had once been someone she called teacher.
“But still… would I rather fail?” It was again the same answer. It would be a difficult pill to swallow, but she’d have to do it. “And that means I’ve got to talk with Daddy. Great.” She thrust open the door and walked towards the door to her home, knowing it wouldn’t be a fun time.
“Good afternoon, Ms. Tiara!” the call from the doorman, from the same voice she’d known for all her life.
“Afternoon, Mr. Givens,” she said pleasantly, a far cry from her childhood boorishness. “Have you seen my Dad anywhere? I needed to talk to him.”
“I believe he’s out on the back patio, ma’am,” Givens answered. “Though do take care, as he has been walking through the house in rather adamant conversation on his mobile.”
“I’ll keep it in mind. Thanks!” Great, if he’s in a business call and I have to wait, I’ll lose my nerve!”
The walk to the patio took longer than it should have, and out under the cloudy grey of the late winter was her father, Filthy Rich, deep in conversation on a cell phone and looking weary of every enduring second.
“No, no, we can’t just invest without a clear plan, I don’t care if the guy looks confident!” he was saying, the expression on his face akin to trying to prevent a disaster. “Yes, startups are always a good buy, but I want a little research done! Can the idea be something that lasts and is worth the effort, or will it be a blip on the radar that disappears in a week? Give me a little more information, and I’ll make a judgement! But only then!”
He looked like he was wrapping up. “Uh… Daddy?”
Filthy Rich gave a start and looked over to the daughter he had yet to have spotted. “I’ll give you all a return call once you’ve made up your mind- only then, Frank! Now get to it!” Filthy Rich practically threw his phone into his pocket before coming over to his daughter to give an enthusiastic embrace, already beginning the first phase of the awkwardness. “And how’s my baby girl today? College still going well?”
Well, he cut right to it. “Haha… Umm, classes are OK, I’m enjoying it a lot,” she said slowly. “Daddy, can we talk for a bit?”
“Sure, sweetpea, is something wrong? Let your old Dad see it done!”
Oh jeez, please stop. “Daddy, I’m not in trouble or anything, I promise,” she began, “but one of my professors…”
“Oh no, who’s your old Dad have to buy off this time?”
“Dad!” She loved her father dearly, but to say he wasn’t embarrassing would be a lie. “No, I got the results back from my Political Science class today, and… well, it’s a little more than a month away before we’ll have our finals…”
“Say no more, say no more,” Filthy Rich said, already reaching for a checkbook. “How much does he want?”
“Oh my- Dad, stop with the money, please!” she said. “It was funny when I was a teenager, but not anymore! I want to earn this!”
“Alright, alright,” he said compliantly, his eyes still gleaming with the desire for another attempt at humor. “So what do you need?”
“Well, he- he said I should look into changing majors when the semester’s over,” she admitted, “but he thinks I should try to get some tutoring to help me get through the rest of the course. And- you know… not fail.”
“Alright, sounds like he has a plan to make things work! My kind of man, I could use him in investments.”
“And- Dad, I’m not joking when I say this- he recommended that I meet with Ms. Cheerilee.”
The silence fell down thick like a heavy blanket of snow.
“Ms. Cheerilee? As in your grade school teacher?” Filthy Rich asked. “As in one of the people your mother hates most?”
“Yeah. He says he’s recommended her before, so…” she gave a shrug and a smile. “Is it OK if I call her and see if she’ll help?”
Filthy Rich mulled it over for only a moment before giving a nod. “I’ll deal with your mother for you. Make sure to head this off before it becomes your issue.”
“What- really?”
“Yes, of course! Anything for my little girl!” he said. “Though if you still want to slip your professor a check-”
“Daddy!” Diamond threw her arms around her father and gave a tight squeeze, still thoroughly embarrassed but nevertheless pleased. “Thanks so much- I’ll pass this class, I promise!”
“Please do! It’ll at least make your mother consider shutting up when this is over.”
The pacing in the family room was unnecessary. Diamond knew it well enough, but it didn’t stop her from taking to the habit with an unusual gusto. Just what was she even afraid of? More embarrassment like what Dad offers? Derision like Mom? Myself, dipping back into bad habits? The list could go on. She was still rather amazed that her father had talked her mother into allowing such a thing.
The sound of chimes echoed through the house, the pleasant peal clearly audible in the comfortable room. The sound of footsteps walking to meet it, then the sound of voices mingling together- the both of them intimately familiar.
Oh my gosh, this is actually happening. Was being this nervous normal? She doubted it was. There were so many reasons to be- and to not be! But how was she supposed to deal with it all and actually have any semblance of sense?
“Diamond Tiara, Miss Cheerilee to see you,” Mr. Givens said, announcing the arrival of their guest to the young woman awaiting her in the family room.
As her former teacher walked in, a memory of earlier days, all it took was one look for Diamond to gaze upon her and come to a horrible, wonderful, terrifying, gut-clenching conclusion of appraisal that was a nightmare to actually deal with: Oh God help me, she’s HOT.
There was no reason for the thought to rise in her mind so strongly. At least, none that came to mind. Cheerilee was wearing casual attire, a soft white button-down and a simple, black A-line skirt that cut off at just below the knee. Her hair was not done up in any semblance of elegance, just a softness that fell to a little above her waist. No sign of sensuality or dressing to impress at all, yet somehow the entire thing was wonderfully attractive.
“Diamond! Oh my gosh, it’s so good to see you again!” The embrace was genuine and heartfelt, the young girl meeting her teacher halfway and somewhat enthusiastically falling into her arms, the two meeting as though old friends. “Look at you, I know it’s been years since we’ve talked last- you’re looking wonderful!”
Compliments had been a sticky point for her for years, and Diamond knew she was blushing a bit at her words. “Thanks,” she said, “it’s really good to see you again, Cheerilee. I’m sorry for-”
“Sorry for what? Oh goodness, not for needing some extra help in classes, I hope!” Cheerilee replied, waving away the words before they could even form. “Nonsense, I’m happy to help. Besides, it should be fun! I’ll want to hear how everything’s been going, and-”
“Hmph.” The sound of disapproval cut through the warmth of the reunion like a hot knife, and the two women turned to see the disapproving stare of Diamond’s mother looking down at them both from the threshold, a half-empty glass of wine in hand. “Cheerilee.”
Cheerilee’s happiness dulled in her eyes and she pulled away from Diamond to turn to the newcomer to the conversation. “Mrs. Rich,” she said slowly, not sure whether this was the beginnings of an argument or an attempt at friendliness.
“So you’ll be helping my daughter pass her courses,” Spoiled remarked. “That’s what Filthy told me.”
“Well- well it’ll be on her own effort, but I’m glad to be of assistance.”
“Hmph.” Another glare, then a quick slurp of wine. “Get to it, then,” she said, before walking down the hall and out of sight.
A pregnant pause, Diamond waiting for the sounds of her mother to truly disappear before returning to normalcy. “Come on, we’ll go upstairs. My room should be fine, right?” She took the older woman by the hand and led her along, trying not to let herself shiver.
At first, the awkward sense of formality remained during their work together, old habits taking their presumed place in this new order of things. But even with the small passage of time, a casual friendliness grew between them; two women together, no structure or hierarchy between them to hinder warmth and the night passed on in pleasantry.
Not to say that the work itself wasn’t difficult. As the night came to a close, Cheerilee mercifully ending the session before Diamond would find herself mentally drained. When the word came, it was all the young woman could do to not fall back in her seat and groan from the misery.
“I know it seems hard right now, but it’s not the end of the world,” Cheerilee reminded her. “Everyone struggles at something, and at least you’re trying.”
“I know, I just hate doing it.” Diamond sighed, knowing she would have to continue on with this work for a while. “Daddy wants me to stay in the major still, but I’m not sure. My professor suggested I try another one.”
“It wouldn’t be the worst idea. What do you want to do?”
Diamond grimaced. “That’s the thing- I don’t know! I know what Daddy wants for me, and Mom could care less, but I don’t know what I want for me.” Well, maybe not right NOW…
Cheerilee smiled, not as a teacher doting on a student but as a friend sympathizing with her struggles. “You’re still young,” she reminded her. “It’s alright to not know who you are just yet. Somehow I’m sure you’ll find out what you want from your life, even if it is at your own pace.”
“And if I don’t want to do anything but be a trophy wife?” Diamond’s figure would certainly allow for such a thing and she knew it.
Cheerilee grinned. “Then I’m sure all you’d have to do is go up to a man and say hello.”
Diamond laughed. Genuine laughter, a feeling that still felt fresh in her heart when it came. “So how’s it been for you? You still teaching down at the school?”
“Not a teacher, but still at school,” Cheerilee replied. “I was promoted to Dean of Students last summer, so I’ve spent more time behind a desk than I was hoping to. It’s better pay, but… I do miss teaching. It was nice to engage with them rather than having to be a disciplinarian.”
“No wonder you said yes to this tutoring job so quickly.”
Cheerilee giggled. “It might have had some influence on the decision,” she admitted. “And- I hope you don’t mind my saying so, I was curious to see how you’ve been taking care of yourself these past few years.”
“Huh?”
Cheerilee seemed almost shamefaced when she spoke again. “Well, when you were in my class… you were- well, quarrelsome. And always getting into fights with Sweetie Belle and her friends. I know you’d tried to grow out of it, but I wondered if college had helped make it easier or harder.”
Yes, fighting. That’s the last ‘F word’ Sweetie Belle and I did together. “… And how am I?” Diamond asked, somewhat curious herself. She knew it could be a struggle.
“You’re wonderful to be around,” Cheerilee said, “you’re certainly not perfect, but it’s been lovely to see what a wonderful young woman you’ve become.”
Diamond beamed with gratitude, giving Cheerilee a hug in response to such kind words. “Thanks for everything,” she said. “I hope you’ll keep coming over, it’s been great to spend some time with you.”
“I’d be glad to! It’s been great to catch up, I’ll want to hear how college has been going, you’ve probably got loads of things to say,” Cheerilee remarked, taking in the young woman. “You must certainly be making all the boy’s heads turn, what with how beautiful you look.”
Diamond grinned, wanting to make sure she knew. “I make everyone’s heads turn,” she boasted. “You remember me and Sweetie in high school?”
Cheerilee’s eyes went wide and her face flushed. “Oh my, I almost forgot! Such a nuisance, driving everyone batty!”
“And I’m always willing to do it again,” Diamond purred, letting her hands stroke along Cheerilee’s body. It was well-cared for, age giving her a feeling of well-crafted luxuriousness rather than a falsified beauty. Curves, too. Not spectacular, but definitely natural. “You know, I’m a bit curious. I figured you’d be married by now, I remember you were a popular teacher. Surely someone must’ve tried.”
The older woman rolled her eyes and gave a small, dry laugh that said plenty. “I had a few dates here and there, but never anything special. You know how it goes.”
“Oh? No man good enough for you?”
“A career woman’s intimidating, I guess. All that confidence is scary! It kept a lot of people away when I was younger. Now, they just want someone a little younger.” Cheerilee gave a smile. “It’s alright. I certainly don’t want for company, and I love my job. What more could I ask for?”
Anything you wanted. “Well, it’s definitely a shame,” Diamond drawled, making sure to take her time soaking in Cheerilee’s form. “They’ll never know what they missed out on. You’d be more than they could handle.”
Cheerilee was flushed for good, and gave a nervous laugh as she gave Diamond one last hug. “I’ll come on by Friday, does that sound alright? I’ll help you go over your material for the weekend and we’ll see how we do together.”
“That sounds great! I’ll see you then!” Diamond walked down with the older woman to the door and gave a wave of farewell, waiting until both she and Givens were out of sight before rushing up to her room. She had some thoughts she’d like to deal with.
“Your tutor?” It was definitely not what she’d expected to hear. “I mean, I sorta get it- I think. Like, is he hot?”
Diamond found herself lounging around on her bed, the screen of her phone filled with the view of Silver Spoon, one and only friend from younger days that she still held to. The weekend soon upon them, it was time to plan their next night out, though their usual session was being pushed to the wayside by Diamond’s distracted mind, and the thoughts she couldn’t quite push away.
Diamond sighed, knowing it was now revelation Number Two. “She’s super hot for sure, totally.”
“She?” Silver Spoon looked at her friend with a look of shock- one that quickly turned to exasperation. “Oh god, this isn’t going to be like you and Sweetie Belle, is it? Are you trying to make your Mom mad again or something?”
“Hey, I was- I wanted to try something new, that was not to make my Mom angry!” Diamond said indignantly. “That was healthy exploration and a chance to see what I liked and enjoyed.”
“Yeah, and it didn’t have anything to do with you and your Mom fighting about college choices or anything at the time, did it?” Silver Spoon challenged.
Diamond scowled. “OK, so maybe it was a little about getting back at Mom. But it was nice, even if it was only for a little while. And now I’ve got this chance, and I’m going to make it happen!”
“Yeah, but- Diamond, your tutor? Isn’t that a little weird?” Silver still looked doubtful. “I mean, is she your age, or is she older? Either way, the dynamics of it are pretty weird…”
Diamond wasn’t getting the support she wanted and she pouted. “Don’t be a spoilsport! I like her, I want her, and I’m gonna have her!” she cried. “Now I told you because I thought you’d be happy for me, but you’re sitting here just-”
“I’m just giving an opinion, that’s all!” Silver replied. “I figured you’d go for someone, like… different, that’s all. I guess younger?”
“Hmph.” It was acquiescence and Diamond knew it. “Either way, I’m gonna have her, so if she joins us for girl’s night out, just go along with it. Alright?”
“Alright, then,” Silver said reluctantly. “Where were you thinking of going? We went to Stars last week, but I heard they’re checking ID’s more carefully because somebody got caught there Sunday.”
“I still wanna go downtown, you wanna try for food before getting drinks? Like, say we go to Hall’s and then walk over to Dispensary?”
“Sure, we can start a little earlier than usual,” Silver said. “How about we meet at your house around eight?”
“Totally! I’ll see you then- and maybe with a friend,” Diamond smirked. “Hope you don’t mind.”
“OK.” Silver paused. “Diamond?”
“Yeah?”
Silver looked like she wanted to say something, the expression all over her face, but no word to define it coming to mind. She at last gave a longwinded sigh, saying, “Good luck.”
Diamond laughed. “I don’t need luck. I’m me.”
5:30 came and went. Diamond got a phonecall from Cheerilee that she was running late in traffic. It’ll be cutting it close if this doesn’t ease up.
Evening came down in force. 6:00 and counting. As she waited in the family room, her father came in as he struggled with a tie that seemed unwilling to be knotted. “Hey, sweetheart,” he said, “mind doing your old man a favor?”
“Daddy, you still can’t tie a tie?” she asked, laughing from the exasperation. “Honestly, you need to switch to bowties- and why didn’t you ask Mom?”
Filthy rolled his eyes. “She’s in a mood, Ms. Cheerilee coming over and all that. You know how she gets.”
‘How she gets’ was something that got on Diamond’s nerves, but she let the moment pass and aided her father. “Where are you headed to?”
“Yacht Club. Your old man is visiting with some old college friends tonight, might be back late. You going out with Silver Spoon once you’re done with your tutoring session?”
And some session it’ll be. “Yeah. And yes, I’ll be safe. I always am.”
Filthy grinned. “That’s my girl. Thanks for the help.”
“Next time wear a clip-on!” she called after him as he left. “Stubborn old mule.”
6:15. Then 6:30, 7:00 approaching ever closer. Please let Silver Spoon be late or something. Mom will be stuck in her room all night, all the staff have gone home for the night, please just let her be late. Finally, a knock at the door and the sound of it opening, Diamond feeling a slight tremor in the knowledge that there would be no backing down now. A thrill of excitement, and maybe a little more.
Cheerilee came into the family room in something of a rush, sorting through her phone and not paying attention to her surroundings. “Hi, Diamond, I’m so sorry for being late, traffic was horrible getting here and-” The moment her eyes left the screen of her phone and settled on her companion, she came to an immediate halt. “Umm… I feel underdressed.”
Diamond smiled. The minidress was sleek, shiny, and the perfect sort of outfit for late night adventures. Hot pink in color, short enough to be somewhat scandalous, and allowing the young woman’s enhanced assets to be hidden yet still well-displayed. It was a stark clash to Cheerilee’s button-down and low-cut skirt- though Diamond found the black boots a nice touch, maybe a sign of extra effort? And here we go. “You’re fine, Cheerilee! Honestly, I’m going out clubbing with Silver Spoon tonight, so when I wasn’t sure if you’d be here in time…”
“That’s… that’s fine,” Cheerilee replied, still seeming uncertain. “It’s certainly a lovely look for you.”
“You think so?” Diamond let herself be flaunted for a moment- just a few seconds so she could be taken in. She knew Cheerilee was watching, whether intentional or not. After all, how could she look away? “I know it seems a bit much, but it’s always a fun time. Maybe you’d want to join us?”
“Oh, I’d just get in the way of you young girls,” Cheerilee replied. “I wouldn’t want to ruin your fun.”
Diamond laughed, leading Cheerilee up the stairs to the awaiting bedroom. “Please. Girl’s Night Out is for the girls, and you’d definitely be a hit. I bet all the boys and girls go to you first!”
Cheerilee blushed and said nothing, allowing herself to be led along. When they reached Diamond’s room, she finally found the strength to mutter, “I’d be a little out of fashion.”
“Please! Just a bit of a wardrobe change and you’d be perfect. I’d help you get out of those clothes and into some of mine, we’re about the same size!” Diamond wheedled. “Besides, you’ve got a hard job, you deserve to have some fun!”
Cheerilee smiled and blushed yet again- her eyes glancing towards Diamond’s bust and then immediately away. It works every time. I love this dress.
“Well- let’s- let’s at least get to work for a little while,” Cheerilee said, looking into her bag and bringing out some work of her own. “So what did you get for coursework this weekend? Let’s go over it and see if we can at least get you a head start before the weekend begins.”
Diamond bided her time. Patience was a virtue she didn’t really have, but this sort of thing required timing. She would wait until Cheerilee was either distracted enough to need it, or relaxed enough to require being bothered. It would begin slowly, one motion before another. Diamond knew she’d get what she wanted, no matter what happened tonight.
Diamond glanced over at the older woman, drinking in her classic figure. Not as large as she was in the chest, nor did the skirt offer any compliments to her ass, but the body was beautiful and well-cared for. It would be an enjoyable time- and there it was, a flash of bare skin between skirt and boots. She’d start there, letting her hand sit gently on her thigh and giving a gentle, yet thoroughly unmistakable rub.
Cheerilee sputtered and died like an engine mid-flight, her words falling away as she looked down to see Diamond’s hand feeling her skin. “Umm… Diamond?”
“Uh-huh?” Diamond kept her gaze focused solely on Cheerilee’s a playful smile on her lips.
“That’s not your leg you’re rubbing, you know. It’s mine.”
“It isn’t? My mistake,” Diamond remarked, words apologetic though her fingers began to slip slowly underneath the edge of the skirt. “Your skin feels so smooth, though.”
“Diamond, you can stop anytime now.”
“But I like it. It feels nice,” she said, her hand now fully slipping beneath the skirt and going higher as she leaned in closer. “Don’t I feel nice?”
Cheerilee was no fool, and immediately backed away, pulling her chair away and rising to her feet. “OK, Ms. Tiara, I think this is a little questionable.”
“Why is it? We’re just a couple of girls. We’re not doing anything wrong,” Diamond said, rising up slowly so as to ensure the view was easily found. “You don’t need to feel bad at all, I don’t want that.”
“Uh-huh. I’m pretty sure I know what you want, Ms. Tiara, and I don’t think it’s a wise idea.”
“What do I want?” Diamond kept walking closer, keeping herself between Cheerilee and the door.
“I suspect you want to anger your mother by seducing me,” Cheerilee remarked, now pressed back against the wall and wondering whether the window was the only unblocked route of escape now. “At least for show.”
“No. Not quite,” Diamond said, inching ever closer to her prize. “I don’t care about my mother- but I want to feel every inch of your body… all over me.”
“Ms. Tiara, I don’t think that’s- appropriate!” Cheerilee said, stumbling over herself and falling back on the bed, the feeling of which against her skin made her eyes seem to bug out wildly. “I’m- I’m far too old for you, you’re too young for me.”
“I don’t care about that! I think you’re sexy,” Diamond said, continuing to press. “Call me Diamond, Cheerilee. You were fine with it before.”
“Diamond, this really isn’t the place to do this,” the older woman said hastily. “Maybe this is something we should talk over at another time, another place.”
Diamond pouted. “So you think I’m ugly, then! Don’t lie to me!”

Silver stood there still petrified for a moment longer, the spell only breaking when she realized she might have to prevent a full-scale murder from occurring. It was little guess as to where the noise came from, another series of sounds echoing from inside Diamond’s room. Spoiled Rich, with a quiet that surprised Silver to the core, opened the door to her daughter’s bedroom only the smallest sliver and bringing about only the smallest squeak of wooden movement; as if on cue, her eyes widened and nostrils flared like a raging bull.
