A thick layer of snow crunched under Cozy Glow when she landed. Chill bit into her hooves, but the flight training had left her warm and panting, especially in her winter jacket and cap, so she did not mind. She and Rumble, her training partner and very special somepony since a month or so, started walking back to the starting line. Earlier in her training session she had flown, but at this point she was tired, so she took the opportunity to catch her breath between each attempt. Her partner did not comment on it, even if he probably understood why. Cozy was silently thankful for that.
"You've almost got it!" Rumble said. "You got all the way around. That last attempt looked perfect until you were just about to pan out of the loop."
"So what did I do wrong, if it was so perfect?" Cozy asked.
Rumble stopped. "Okay, so when you do a loop like that, you've got to accelerate before going into the loop itself," Rumble said and moved a his hoof straight through the snow, leaving a streak. "Then you shift your wings and hold them still to actually do the loop. Remember to bend your back backwards too, so your body follows the trajectory." He drew a circle at the end of the streak. "But since you can't flap your wings in the loop, your speed will drop. So, right here," he tapped at the bottommost part of the circle, "Right when you pan out, you need to flap your wings hard to regain your speed and continue flying. It's the easy part; you've already gotten through the trick itself."
Cozy nodded. She had been practicing this simple loop for weeks now, and never gotten closer to actually doing it than this. "Okay. I've got it this time."
"Yeah, I think so too," he said and took off again. He would watch her trick from the side to see what she should improve on. "Okay, ready when you are!" he waved to her.
Cozy stepped in behind the starting line and stretched her wings. She took a deep breath, feeling the cold winter air clear out and refresh her throat. Her exhale left a small puff of smoke. Then she took off.
First she pushed herself to accelerate, keeping her body straight and streamlined. Then, when she approached where Rumble was standing, she closed her eyes. She did not need to see for the next part; in fact, doing this with open eyes always made her dizzy. She just needed to feel the wind shear through her feathers. With a small, controlled motion, she angled her wings slightly and felt her body lift and fall backwards. Following the motion, she bent her spine backwards too, following the flow of the loop. It felt weird, going against any logic for how flying should be done, but she knew this was what she had to do.
All in all, it barely took a second before she was done. As she faced forward again, she quickly snapped her wings and straightened the back again. The sudden rush of wind felt invigorating, tugging at her mane and tail.
Only now did she open her eyes, flare her wings open to gently tap down on the ground. It was the first time she had landed on all four hooves, as the various Cozy-sized imprints in the snow around her could confirm. "I did it. Oh golly I actually did it!" she all but squeaked as the realization finally hit home. She turned to Rumble, her whole face beaming. "You saw that? Was I great or was I great?"
"Hmm? Oh sorry, I must have looked away," Rumble said innocently. "Did I miss something?"
Cozy felt her good mood run right off of her. "WHAT!?" she roared and began marching right up to him. "YOU HAD ONE, AND I REPEAT, ONE, JOB AND THAT WAS JUST TO LOOK FORWARD FOR TWO SECONDS AND YOU COULDN'T EVEN DO THAT RIGHT!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?" She was a little smaller than him, so she had to tilt her head a little bit to properly shout the last few words straight into his face.
"Yes, I am," Rumble smirked. "You're too easy sometimes, Cozy."
Cozy now felt her anger run right off her. "Oh, ha, ha, ha," she grumbled. "Very funny." She pushed him a little with her forelegs, just to show that she did not appreciate being humiliated like that. She had a reputation of ruthlessness to uphold after all, even if he was her special somepony. She shuffled a little on her hooves, preparing a proper revenge.
"Don't be mad. Come on, you know I saw," Rumble said. "You really did it! Well done!"
"I suppose there is only one more thing to do now, then," she said sweetly.
Rumble nodded. "You should learn to do that with your eyes open. Then you have really mastered the trick."
"Good golly no, I didn't mean the trick," Cozy said with glee. "I meant this!" She grabbed the pile of snow she had collected between her forelegs and launched herself at Rumble, shoving it all in his face with enough force to send him tumbling onto his back, sputtering and flailing. "That will teach you to mess with me!" she roared triumphantly. "I thought you and all of Equestria had learnt not to underestimate me! But I'm still Cozy Glow!"
Rumble flipped back to his hooves and started gathering some snow in his hooves. "Well if that's how it is, I suppose it's up to me to save Equestria from you this time."
"Come then!" Cozy shouted and leaned down and forward, affording her a stabile stance, ready to fly forward against him or upwards and away. "First you, then Twilight!"
Rumble pounced, holding two lumps of snow in his hooves. Cozy threw herself upwards, only to find herself followed, overtaken, grabbed by the wings and then suddenly plummeting with a little dignified shriek that was soon muffled by the snow.
Duly noted: do not try to outfly the one who has been helping you train your flight for these last few months.
She felt a hoof press a lump of snow into the neck of her jacket. She jolted right back up with a yelp, turning every which way to try and reach it only to come up short every time.
"And so you have been defeated again," Rumble smirked.
"I WILL MURDER YOU FOR THIS!" Cozy roared, feeling the snow melt and slip against her coat, literally sending a chill down her spine. She quickly unbuttoned her jacket and all but threw it and the offending piece of snow away. She stood heaving in rage, thinking of just how she should punish this insolence. She fixed her soon-to-be ex-special somepony with a glare from the depths of Tartarus.
"But then who will help your flying? Or make that snowball up to you with a cup of hot cocoa?" Rumble asked.
"Murder canceled," Cozy chirped, her good mood restored. "But only if you make it just the way I like it."
"Freshly ground cocoa beans with cinnamon and a hint of cardamom topped heavily with whipped cream?" Rumble asked.
"And grated nutmeg on top," Cozy reminded, even if she knew he knew. "Don't forget the nutmeg."
"I'd never," Rumble said. "Let's go back in. That looks cold."
As he said that, a gust of wind whirled past them, carrying some snowflakes. Cozy shuddered and fluffed up her wings for warmth. Maybe throwing the jacket off had not been the best idea after all. "If you hadn't done that with the snowball I wouldn't be cold," Cozy huffed.
"If I hadn't done it, then all of Equestria would have fallen to you by now," Rumble retorted. "All is fair in love and war." He picked up her fallen jacket and threw it over his back.
"But if you really liked me, wouldn't you let your very special somepony have her dream?" Cozy asked innocently. The two went next to each other. She did not protest when he stepped just a little closer and extended a wing over her. She was cold, and if there was one pony she did trust enough to let that close, it was him. "Wouldn't you let her conquer all of Equestria, dismember Twilight, and then crown you her prince? We could rule with iron hooves and force everypony we didn't like to fight to the death for our amusement!"
"That sounds… lovely," Rumble said with less conviction than Cozy really thought her wonderful dream deserved. "But isn't it better to play for the long game? Wait until Twilight's guard is down, and then!" He slammed his hoof down hard on the garden path leading back into the Canterlot Castle. "Take her out when she least expects it?"
"I like the way you think! And the way you make hot cocoa!" Cozy said. "You'll make an excellent prince for me!"
"Thanks…" Rumble said, his cheeks flushing.
They went inside the castle through a discreet door and started back to Princess Twilight's private wing. Cozy lived there too, since she was Twilight's student. Now, however, she had the entire wing to herself, as Twilight was away in the Crystal Empire on some diplomatic matter or another. "I'll be right with you," Rumble said and took off into another door. Cozy knew it led to the kitchen where Rumble worked, being the castle's apprentice chef.
"See you soon!" Cozy said and proceeded up to her own room.
It had once been Luna's old study, but since Cozy moved in she had found some books more appropriate to her age. Classics like "Littlepip Longstockings", "Whispers in the Pillows" and "The Princess" by Marechiavelli now fought for a place on her shelves. There was also a large window where the sun was slowly beginning to set. She had been practicing for hours, only taking a small break for dinner. Soon she would be able to see the first faint stars. There had been plenty of star charts and planetariums when she moved in, but she had gradually replaced them with her own crayon drawings and hoof-crafted statuettes. She had always like arts and crafts a lot.
And, of course, she had a massive, Princess-sized bed, all to herself. It had been built inside the room once and was too large to move. All she had needed was a new cloud-mattress. Cozy put her hat on a hook next to her door and grabbed her favorite book. Fluttering her wings, she hopped up on the bed. She was still freezing slightly, so she crept down under the blanket and settled down on her stomach, the book between her forelegs.
She continued where she had left off last evening.
When a princess uses force, she acts like a beast. She must learn to act like two types of beasts: lions and foxes. A fox is defenseless against wolves; a lion is defenseless against traps. A princess must learn to act like both the fox and the lion: she must learn, like the lion, how to frighten off wolves and, like the fox, how to recognize the traps. In dealing with ponies, a princess must break her promises when they put her at a disadvantage and when the reasons for which she made the promises no longer exist. In any case, promises are never something on which a princess can rely, since ponies by nature are wretched and deceitful. A princess should be a master of deception.
Cozy all but drank in Marechiavelli's ancient wisdom. She reached for a crayon and underlined a couple of lines in that passage before she soldiered on with the rest of the text. It was not an easy book for her, with many strange words and long sentences, but she had never loved any book more than this one.
She read through the chapter and a little bit into the next one (Chapter XIX: That One should Avoid being Despised and Hated), before she heard a knock on the door. She bookmarked the page, just in case. "Come in!"
Rumble opened the door, balancing a tray with two steaming cups on his head. Cozy's mouth watered just seeing it. In his mouth he had her jacket which he quickly threw on the hook next to her door. "Come up here!" Cozy called and lifted up the blanket and gave an inviting flick of her wing. "We could read together and warm up!"
"Sounds great," Rumble said and set the tray down on her nightstand. "My very special somepony." Cozy all but crooned in satisfaction as he hopped up in her bed and laid down next to her, nuzzling the back of her neck and cheek quickly. He held the book in his hooves and Cozy held her cup of cocoa. They would switch for the next page, like they always did. Rumble started to read at her bookmark.
"A princess ought to reckon conspiracies of little account when her little ponies hold her in esteem; but when they are hostile to her, and bears hatred towards her, she ought to fear everything and everypony. And well-ordered states and wise princesses have taken every care not to drive the nobles to desperation, and to keep the common pony satisfied and contented, for this is one of the most important objects a princess can have. Among the best ordered and governed kingdoms of our times is Phrance, and in it are found many good institutions on which depend the liberty and security of the princess..."
She took a sip of the wonderful cocoa and shuffled a little closer to his warm, strong side. A wing extended over her back, the soft feathers sending a shiver of pleasure down her neck, spine and to the tip of her tail. It swished a little by instinct.
This was her heaven.
"That was so interesting!" Cozy said when they finally closed the book. "I feel like I'm learning more and more about how to be a proper Princess!"
"That's… good, I think?" Rumble said.
"Of course it is! It's not just about taking the throne, it's also about keeping it!" Cozy said. "And this will surely help me!" She pushed herself up from the bed and shook out her wings. They were a bit ruffled from all the flying she had done today. But a quick bath ought to take care of that. "I think it's about time to hit the clouds," she said. "But it's been really fun today!"
Rumble nodded and sat up. He looked critically at her ruffled wings. Cozy suddenly felt bashful. No pegasus wanted to be seen with her wings untidy. Glancing over, a lot of feathers were out of place, sticking out at odd angles and leaving strange gaps in her plumage. "I'm… going to clean that out too," she said.
"Clean?" Rumble asked quizzically. "With your hooves? Don't you preen your wings?"
"Well… no," Cozy admitted. "It takes too long and… nopony really taught me to. I tried once, and I pulled my feathers out instead."
"Oh… I see. Sorry," Rumble said. "But you really should try to learn. Your hooves can't get to all feathers, right?"
Cozy swallowed, her mouth suddenly dry.
She wanted to ask, but… preening was an intimate thing. Wouldn't he think it was weird, even if he was her special somepony? What if he didn't want to? She was supposed to be able to do this herself. What if he saw her as a crybaby filly? He helped her with her flying, he made her cocoa, he cooked for her, and he even read with her from a book he most likely didn't even like. How could she ask even more? She hated being dependent on others like that. Princesses were supposed to be strong, independent ponies.
But… if she promised herself she'd make it up somehow…? She needed help to learn this from somepony, and she did not want to pull out her feathers again.
"Hey…?" she started, feeling her cheeks flush from embarrassment. "Think… you could… you know…?"
”…what?” Rumble asked flatly.
”Golly, this is a little embarrassing, but..." Cozy felt herself blush and looked down on the blanket between her hooves. "Maybe you could teach me how to preen my wings and… stuff…” Cozy finally stammered.
Rumble's lingering silence made her look up. Just a quick glance through the bangs of her mane.
He looked bashful. And very red.
"Are… you sure you want me too… shouldn't another mare do that…?" Rumble asked without meeting her eyes. He too suddenly had developed a profound interest in her blanket.
"I don't know any other mares." Cozy said flatly. She grabbed her empty cup of cocoa. "And if you even suggest I ask Twilight, then I will break this over your thick head."
"But… me?" Rumble pointed at himself, finally looking at her.
"I get it if you don't want to," Cozy said quickly, though a pang went through her heart at the idea of rejection. Was this what it felt like for him when he asked her to be her special somepony?
"I want it if you do," Rumble said.
"I want it!" Cozy chirped, releasing a breath she did not realize she had been holding. "You show me tonight, and… I'll try for myself tomorrow, okay?"
"Okay. Sure!" Rumble said, suddenly looking a lot happier, if still flustered. "We'll start directly then!" He rose and went around her, sitting down just behind her back. She folded her tail away, wrapping it around her hindquarters. She felt a little nervous. It was not too common that other ponies touched her.
"So what should I do?" Cozy asked, glancing back.
"I'll show you how I do it, and you tell me if something feels wrong."
Cozy nodded. His hooves ran up her side and carefully extended her left wing. It tingled sweetly where he touched her. A pegasus' wings were a sensitive part of her body, crisscrossed with nerves that would help her read and react to the wind and air pressure in flight.
He stroked her wing a few times. Then…
"O-oh…!" she said, the surprise in her tone masking the small, sensual gasp that escaped her lips. Looking to her wing, she saw Rumble's head bent over her margin and felt how his tongue gently brushed over her small covert feathers while he used his soft, but firm lips to straighten them.
"Did I do something wrong?" he asked, looking up with worry.
Cozy shook her head. "No, not at all. Continue."
Rumble returned to his duties, slipping his tongue in between every individual little feather, straightening them all and cleaning them. The movements were not nearly strong enough to hurt, but certainly enough to make the nerves in her wings crackle with pleasure. It was like the tinniest of electric currents jumped from every little feather he touched and cleaned. Cozy sighed contently, any and all stress she might have had melting away.
He was soon done with the shorter, softer covert feathers in the middle of her wing. Those were mostly for warmth and streamlining her wing's shape in the air. Her longer feathers along the edge of the wings, the secondaries and primaries, were even more important. They were what gave her most of her wing area and their larger size made them even more sensitive to the wind. "Hmm…" Cozy grinned. "You should continue with my large feathers too."
"Are you-"
"Yes I’m sure!" she snapped. "Now go!"
"You asked for it…" Rumble whispered. Something with his voice made her grin with expectation. "Buckle up."
With one long lick along her wing margin, he pushed her wing upwards a little bit further, allowing him easy access to the long secondary feathers, closest to her side. She felt her wing shaking a little in his grasp, but she couldn't stop it. She lifted her hooves to her mouth to suppress a snicker of pleasure… this was shaping up to be much more rewarding than she had first thought.
For a few moments he just held her wing open, tantalizing her with his hot breath. Then he moved in and caught the base of a feather between her lips. His dexterous tongue plucked and pulled on its base, sending a cascade of sensations to her brain. "Mmmmm~" Cozy crooned silently in her throat. He strummed her just hard enough to coax a reaction from her. It felt like... like last spring when she went into season for the first time. Like her wing was just aching to be touched.
Also, just like with her heat, he refused to give her anything more. He just held her there, on the edge. His expression softened and he leaned forward. Cozy replied in kind.
It was an awkward angle, but Cozy could never had imagined this was how a kiss really felt like. She thought it was just a stupid, mushy thing for silly romantic books, but it was so much more. His lips on hers, the closeness of his body against her back. The wonderful tingling in her wings. This was… unlike anything she had ever felt before. She felt so close to him! And sitting like this made her little filly-place easy to see for the both of them. They both leaned forward to look, their faces practically glowing red in the darkness.
She had not realized how soaked she was. The flesh between her outer lips was moist and felt a little cool in the night air. The coat around her entrance was damp and sticky with her filly-juices. She pushed her hoof down, first sliding it over the hard little nub at the top of her hole, and then over the rosy lips themselves.
