The Tale of A Cruel World
Load Full StoryAs Daring gently opened the door of the amazingly preserved structure she noticed the internal walls were made of a metal she didn't recognize. This metal radiated an awful feeling, and when the dust was pushed away it still held a wicked shine.
Daring quickly checked the antechamber of the structure, there was no furniture, and the only item of notice was a pedestal made of a mix between the purple metal and a sickly red metal which gave off the same feeling of fear. On the pedestal was what looked like a button, which looked like a black and red hourglass, which was somehow worse than the metals. It was a mere representation of the true artifact, but just its visage radiated a great power.
'What kind of place is this? Welp, you only live once!' She gently pushed down the button, and the wall in front of her lifted, revealing a long hallway made of a simple grey brick.
'Perhaps the antechamber is meant to break an invader's courage. Can't stop me though!' Daring kept pushing on, keeping a keen eye for traps. The hallway was lit by lamps from below, and carvings lined he walls. Observing some of the first carvings, one of a massive slime-like creature in a crown, another a massive worm, and the last a massive amount of bipedal creatures staring down at a pony . All of these carvings had one similarity, a pony, with armor and bow, as well as some kind of tube like weapon, facing off against these foes.
Suddenly the door shut behind her, causing her to yelp and jump. Turning around she saw the eerie visage of the hourglass, which glowed a bright orange. Then a voice rung out, as if it was coming from within Daring's mind.
"Welcome traveler, you are in the Temple of Desolation, listen as I spin you the tale of a cruel, cruel world, The glow from the hourglass faded, and the slime-like being glowed.
"In the first age, this was the first battle, the time the shadows first lengthened to swallow the one who swore revenge against the Jungle Lord. The King Slime,a pathetic hunter to those prepared, compared to what lies ahead at least. He had easily slain the creature, gaining some strength from the slime's defeat." The glow transitioned to the worm, revealing its shriveled and starved form.
"The Scourge of the Desert fell next, but only after the one who swore vengeance gathered shards of the local Cnidrion population, using them as well as arrows and fallen stars to create weapons which would pierce the flesh of the Scourge as well as those beyond it. In his fury his arrows and bullets felled the beast, his power ever growing. .It was ironic really, when it was another worm which would almost seal his fate, but that is much later. Daring noticed the pattern easily, whatever glowed was what this voice would talk about, as well as the pony's power supposedly growing after defeating his foes.
"His conquest brought upon him the eyes of the goblins. But even with their sorcery and stalwart warriors, they fell at his hooves. The carvings continued revealing a disembodied eye, as well as another giant worm. Even though they were two separate carvings.
"The Eye that watched his progress appeared as he who hunts was looking into the festering infection simply known as the Corruption. Panicked, he who hunts had broken a third shadow orb releasing the infested worm, the Eater of Worlds. Yet somehow, someway, with his meager power at the time, he had slain both beasts. That was when I saw that he was truly a threat to everything I had built. However I could not interfere with the game.
'The game? Whoever built this place must have had some involvement with this "he who hunts", also, this guy seems like a crazy stallion. More carvings lit up each depicting a horrible beast.
"His crusade would pit him against the infection and blood hives, both of which would call the horrors of blood and pestilence. The advances of both infections would be halted when their hives were temporarily slain, but the infections would return to spread once more."
" The Dungeon fell next, its guardians falling silent as the demon Skeletron fell. He would proceed to take on the beasts of the Underworld, claiming more power and reforging a tool of the Dungeon into a weapon which would remain by his side, at the time it was known as the Phoenix Blaster. This would be the weapon of his conquest for some time, alongside other ranged weaponry, as was his specialty."
"He would then take on the Slime Gods. He would forge armor from their remains, as well as a mighty bow to pair with his gun. One of the images was different, with it having "he who hunts" standing on two hooves, some kind of weapon, apparently the Phoenix Blaster
Finally I knew what was coming when he fought the Wall, the being I used to seal the spirits of light and dark, sacrificing an innocent soul to summon the beast. My creation fought fiercely, almost overtaking him, but it wasn't enough. The spirits were released and his power began growing rapidly. Daring was about halfway down the hall when all the remaining carvings glowed brightly. The door at the end of the hall, also featuring the hourglass, had opened.
"The rest of my minions' tales have been recorded in the carvings, honestly I almost forgot how many there were when I built this place. I must prepare for he who hunts, Calamitas has fallen, permanently, I will not be winning this battle, for I, Jungle Lord Yharim, have lost the wager. Be careful traveler, and may Calamity give you peace." The carvings stopped glowing.
'So Yharim had wronged "he who hunts" who had went on a "crusade" as Yarim called it, to destroy him, and I can assume the "hunter" as I will call him, had won the battle, so what's in here. Daring had reached the door and had a clear view of the room before her. It was surprisingly simple, with wooden furnishings, as if it was a place to hide away from grandeur.
Looks like Yharim had a place of rest.
The only thing that made the room out of the ordinary was some kind of opaque container, like a sarcophagus. It bore the hourglass on its face, and was made of a shining gold like material, but had noticeable signs of breaking and decay from the ages past. Daring put a gentle hoof on the coffin, thinking.
'Is it Yharim, or is it-' Air shot out from hidden valves inside the coffin as the lid lifted. Daring jumped back as a pony sat up panting for breath. Both of their eyes met and Daring gasped at his eyes. They were two different colors, both shining with an unprecedented ferocity, but even then there were two different kinds of ferocity. The red shone with pure and unbridled rage, one that could slay anything before it. The other was vibrant green, and held a cold and merciless gaze, one not blinded by fury, but channeled and concentrated.
Then he spoke,
"Who are you?"
Author's Note
Hello everyone! I hope you enjoyed this little exposition dump of a prologue/first chapter. If you need to know this is a Terarria+Calamity mod crossover where the events of the mod occurred far before pony society as we see it. Also I hope some of you got the reference in the Chapter name.
Also if you think the story about "Hunter" taking on the Eye of Cthulhu and the Eater of Worlds at the same time is making him seem overpowered, just imagine him being this guy, because that is about the level of skill this guy has, and there is a story behind his skills as well.
Anyways, hope you all enjoyed, next time, we will be wathcing the duo meet and fight their way to the surface!
