What if that dream comes true? (Edited)
Twilight woke up quickly while breathing and sweating nervously. She looked around and noticed that she was still in her castle room. She looked to the right and saw Luna sleeping, hugging her. Twilight let out a sigh of relief, knowing that Luna had not retired and abandoned her.
When Twilight was about to go back to sleep, she was unsure. What if Luna and Celestia do retire one day? What if one day she and her friends have to rule Equestria? What if Luna leaves her and goes to a distant land? She needed time to reflect on that. Using her magic, she took off Luna’s hooves, which enveloped her. Twilight got up from the bed, and went to the balcony to reflect on the recent dream she had. Luna started with her hooves, looking for what was no longer in her embrace.
Twilight sat on the balcony sadly and put the front hooves on the balcony backer while looking at Ponyville. She knew that on the day Tirek was stealing magic, she told the three princesses that she wanted to have a duty as a princess, but she didn’t mean that Celestia and Luna would retire and she would rule Equestria. She already had a duty as a Princess of Friendship which was to spread the magic of friendship, solve Equestria problems, and being the handmare of the School of Friendship. She didn’t want to rule Equestria. Tears started to come out of her eyes as she closed her eyes. She knew it was just a dream, but what if it ever becomes real?
Twilight didn’t notice, but Luna had woken up and started looking for her, until she saw her on the balcony. Worried, she got up from the bed and went to her. “Love?”
Twilight’s ears cheered when she heard the voice of her love. She wiped away tears with a hoof and looked at Luna, trying to hide her sadness. “Hi, Luna.”
“Love, why are you awake?” asked Luna, concerned about her marefriend.
Twilight looked back at Ponyville, her smile falling. “I decided to watch the stars. I heard that they are very beautiful at this early hour.”
Luna didn’t seem to buy what Twilight said. She approached Twilight. “Love, is there something that is bothering you?”
Twilight felt tears come out of her eyes again, she didn’t know whether to tell. She feared that if she did, Luna would decide to do so, resulting in not having her around anymore. There was a silence.
Luna, noticing the silence, sat down next to Twilight. She realized that Twilight was crying, her ears lowered in sadness.
“Love? What happened? Why are you crying?” asked Luna. She felt heartbroken when she saw Twilight’s tears.
“I don’t know if I should tell you, Luna...” Twilight replied, still crying.
Luna hugged Twilight with a wing. “Twilight, I am your marefriend. You can tell me how you feel.”
“I know, Luna. But I’m afraid that if I say what I feel, you could end up doing it and leaving me alone, on the side or behind,” Twilight explained.
“Love, I would never leave you. And besides, what do you mean I can end up doing this?” asked Luna.
Twilight was still unsure and uncertain whether to tell or not, but she decided that she would tell only about the dream being bad. “Luna, I had a bad dream.”
Luna’s ears perked up in surprise. “Bad dream? But what did you dream about?”
“Luna, I don’t know if I should tell you about what that dream was like,” Twilight replied.
“But why not? Is it that bad that you don’t want to tell me?” asked Luna confused, stopping with the wing hug.
Twilight started to cry even more, just remembering what happened in the dream. “Yes, Luna. It is very bad…”
“Love, I already told you. You can tell me how you feel. Believe me, saving what you feel is not a good idea,” Luna said lovingly, placing a hoof comfortingly on Twilight’s back. “And I say that, from experience.”
Twilight looked at Luna, now surprised. “Have you saved what you feel once?”
“Yes, Twilight. And that was in the past,” Luna replied, now sad to remember.
“Luna, forgive me for making you remember the past,” said Twilight Sparkle, now sorry for making Luna remember her past.
“Twilight, don’t blame yourself. It’s all right. Thanks to you and your friends, I already forgave myself for what I did as Nightmare Moon,” said Luna with a smile.
“Really? But when?” asked Twilight, now curious.
“When you, your friends and the other ponies helped to defeat Tantabus.”
Twilight smiled a little just to remember. “Ah! So it was that night that you forgave yourself for everything you did in the past?”
“Yes, Twilight. But I couldn’t do it alone. You and your friends helped me and were with me during that moment and helped me to realize that making yourself suffer is not good,” Luna replied.
Twilight agreed with Luna. Making yourself suffer is not good. Because the more you make yourself suffer, the more guilt you have inside yourself. It is best to vent to someone. But Twilight doesn’t know if she should say what she felt, since her situation was different: she had no guilt inside, just sadness.
“So, Twilight? Could you tell me how was the dream?” asked Luna with a smile.
Twilight started to think. She decided she would tell. She looked at Luna and say, “Ok Luna. I’ll tell you.”
“How was the dream start?” asked Luna, taking the front hoof off the back of her purple alicorn.
“You and Celestia asked my friends, Spike and me to come to the castle. We ran to the castle. I was nervous and worried about why you and Celestia called us,” Twilight started.
Luna raised an eyebrow in a confused way. “But why did Celestia and I call you and the others to the castle?”
Twilight felt tears in her eyes again. “I’ll get there, Luna. Moving on, when we arrived, we saw you two sitting on their thrones. I approached you and Celestia and asked why you called us. At first, I thought that some creature would attack Equestria, or that Tirek or Cozy Glow came out of their prison in Tartarus. But Celestia said it wasn’t that and Equestria had been at peace for years,” Twilight continued, now would be the time for her to speak the worst part of the dream, she started to cry even more. “Then I calmed down and asked why you and Celestia called us. Celestia then replied that you and she talked and decided that… that…”
“Celestia and I decided what?” Luna encouraged, now worried when she saw that Twilight was crying a lot now.
“... It was time for you two to retire!” Twilight whined.
Luna was surprised by the answer. In the dream, did she and Celestia say they would retire? But that didn’t make any sense! She has retured to rule together with her sister a few years! Luna was about to speak, but Twilight continued to speak.
“Then, I asked why you two retire, and then, you said that you and Celestia deserved a break, since you were ruling for a thousand years!” Twilight cried.
“I asked whoever was going to rule Equestria in your place. Celestia replied that it would be me and my friends. I started to get very nervous and teleported a paper bag to breathe in it!” Twilight cried. “When my friends and I thought we had defeated King Sombra, he had destroyed the Tree of Harmony! But after King Sombra’s attack, instead of you two saying you weren’t going to retire, you two said you were going to retire only when I was ready!”
“Did anything else happen in the dream, Twilight?” asked Luna sadly.
“Yes. It also happened that you and Celestia went on vacation for a day, and my friends and I ruled for a day at the castle. And when the Summer Sun Celebration came, you said it would be the LAST Summer Sun Celebration, so when the time came for the celebration, I announced that the Two Sisters Festival! Discord pretended to be Grogar and, on top of that, gathered three villains for: Cozy, Chrysalis and Tirek, just to test me to see if I would be a good leader for Equestria, and after the trio’s petrification you two realized that I was ready. I was crowned the new ruler of Equestria, and you and Celestia joined your crowns to form my new crown! You moved to Silver Shoals! Luna, you practically moved away to live elsewhere in Equestria, which would mean that we would see each other infrequently!” Twilight wept even more. “The worst is what happened after twenty years. I became an adult alicorn, Spike turned into an adult dragon and my friends got old! I would practically outlive my friends!”
When Twilight finished talking about the dream, she hugged Luna while crying even more, afraid to lose Luna because of the supposed future retirement. Luna was surprised by everything Twilight said about the dream: of her and Celestia announcing their retirement, of her abandoning Twilight to live in a distant city, until Twilight ruling Equestria in her and Celestia places. She looked at Twilight and noticed the alicorn trembling while more tears gets out of her eyes and drunk down her cheeks. This made her heart broken. She never saw Twilight feel so sad and scared before. She returned the hug and stared lovingly stroking Twilight’s mane.
“Twilight, that was just a dream. It won’t happen,” said Luna.
“But what if it is a message from the future? What if my dream is talking about what will happen?” asked Twilight uncertainly.
“That was nothing but a bad dream, Twilight. Celestia and I will continue to rule Equestria and we will not retire,” said Luna.
“But what if you do retire one day? What if one day you and Celestia call us to the castle to announce your retirement and you move to another city?” asked Twilight, more tears started to come out of her eyes just imagine it happening.
“Twilight, Celestia may have been ruling Equestria for a thousand years, but she wouldn’t stop ruling Equestria just because it has been a thousand years since she was ruling,” Luna replied. “ And I returned to rule with my sister a few years, I don’t intend to retire.”
Twilight looked at Luna, still with tears in her eyes. “But Luna, in the dream you told me that you two deserve a break because you have been ruling Equestria for a thousand years.” She looked away as more tears came out of her eyes. “You two didn’t even look like the same princesses who ruled Equestria...”
“Twilight, you can rest easy. This is never going to happen,” Luna guaranteed with a smile. “We already know that you have three tasks as a Princess of Friendship: share the magic of friendship, solve friendship problems throughout Equestria, and your most recent task, which is to be the handmare of the Friendship School. We are not going to put one more task on you.”
“But Luna ...” Twilight tried to explain why the dream might happen, but she was interrupted by Luna.
“Twilight, trust me. We are not going to retire.” Luna cleared the tears of Twilight’s eyes with a hoof.
“But Luna, what if you ever retire?”
“Twilight, we are not going to retire. You can trust me.”
“Luna, I trust you. I just don’t trust the dream I had today. ”
“Twilight, this dream you had, will not determine Equestria’s fate.”
“But what if it determines?”
“It will not determine, Twilight. For the love I feel for you, I can assure you: We will continue together, Celestia and I will not retire and move to another city, and I will not abandon you.”
Twilight smiled a little with Luna’s words. “Really?”
Luna nodded as she smiled. “An-uh. Bad dreams, but also known as nightmares, are nothing more than a manifestation of the negative feelings we feel.”
“So it wasn’t a prediction for the future?” asked Twilight with a hopeful smile.
“No, Twilight. It was just a nightmare,” Luna replied.
“Well, if it was just a nightmare and not a prediction for the future, I am more relaxed.”
Luna stopped hugging Twilight with her hooves and stood up. “Shall we go back to sleep, love?”
“Yes, I already vented what I felt and I feel much better,” Twilight replied, also standing up.
Twilight and Luna entered the Castle’s Friendship room, approached the bed, lay down, covered their necks, hugged each other with their hooves and went back to sleep, with smiles on their faces, knowing that what Twilight dreamed was just a nightmare and that it would never come true.
