Under the Stars

I first noticed the letter on my desk when I returned from the library, sitting atop my research notes from my latest quantum superposition project. Quantum superposition is an interesting field to research; of course there isn't any stable proof of the concept, for it is merely theory. The theory goes like this: any two quantum states can be added together and the result will be another quantum state, which is entirely valid. A prime example is the Starswirl Equation, which is linear and describes a physical phenomenon. This means that any combination of solutions to aforementioned linear equations is also a solution of itself. Quantum mechanics follows this principle, and according to my research, what Starswirl the Bearded stated was mostly correct.

Upon walking over to my desk and scanning my notes, my eyes fell upon the said letter. I picked it up in my magic and nearly cast it aside before I noticed that it was addressed to none other than myself. Curiosity overtook my thoughts, prompting me to open the letter and pay it a read. It read:

Dear Twilight,

Please meet me out on the balcony tonight around nine of the clock.

Yours,

Luna.

"Of the clock." Ha! Typical Luna. She was always one to use older Equestrian dialect, given that she was not yet fully accustomed to modern pony culture. I wondered why she wanted to meet me tonight. It was probably something to do with being a princess, some advice or something like that. That was always a constant, but it was necessary. One can't learn everything on their own; you need friends and mentors for guidance and support. And I was lucky enough to have the three best mentors and six best friends a pony could ask for, and I knew they'd be there for me every step of the way.

Yet, my heart wished that this wouldn't merely be a counseling session. My heart wanted Luna to reach out, to tell me she cared about me and loved me like nopony else. I knew that something like that wouldn't happen, so I tried my hardest to force those feelings deep down from whence they came. I also knew that I had feelings for the Princess of the Night, ever since that fateful day on Nightmare Night all those years ago.

At least that's where I attest my feelings to have begun. I had denied it up until the Tantabus incident; that was when I knew I had fallen rather hard for her. She looked so cute when asleep, and in the shared dream, it pained me greatly to see her in such a depressed state. Everything about her was cute or beautiful, from her adorably cerulean eyes to her flowing mane to her perfect flank. I wanted so deeply to love and be loved by her that the butterflies I had forced down had begun to surface as eight o'clock rolled around, then eight thirty, and finally the time came.

"Hi, Luna," I greeted as I alighted onto her balcony.

"Good evening," she replied. "Are you ready to start the night?"

My heart leapt at her statement on a streak of false hope. She probably just meant that as a way of asking if I was ready to start a counseling session. Holding back any romantic thoughts, I nodded in reply.

"Follow me," Luna said as she spread her wings and lifted off into the night sky. I obliged the mare, following soon after. The night air felt great beneath my wings, and I even did some maneuvers for the fun of it before joining Luna on the cloud she landed on. The cloud was about five hundred feet from the surface, offering an unparalleled view of the night sky which to my surprise was starless.

"You are probably wondering why I brought you up here," she asked as I landed next to her. Again I nodded, too lost within my own mind to say much of anything to the alicorn next to me.

She sighed a heavy sigh, as if the weight of the world had fallen on her shoulders. I made to speak, but before I could, her beautiful cerulean eyes looked deep into mine. "I wanted to show you this."

Her majestic horn lit up, and the sky was suddenly painted with bright stars, shining their light down onto the two of us and the landscape below. The display evoked a gasp from me, shocked at both how quickly she performed the task of painting the stars and how beautiful the stars were, just like those in her flowing mane.

"Friend Twilight, there is something else I wish to tell you," Luna said, her voice nervous and barely a whisper. Her horn lit up once more, prompting several more stars to appear above us in the shape of a large heart. My heart now decided to begin pounding in my chest so loudly I inwardly wondered if the mare beside me could hear it beating.

"Twilight, you've been such a good friend to me," she began, turning once more to face me. "You've been my first real friend since my return from banishment. And ever since that fateful night on which we became friends, I couldn't help but acknowledge the fact that I..." Her voice trailed off, and she turned away from me.

"You... what?" I asked, curiosity once more taking over.

"I love you, Twilight Sparkle," she whispered.

My face lit up with a smile, and I felt a surge of happiness so great that I nearly cried. She did love me! I turned her head back towards me with a hoof, staring once more into her beautiful eyes and smiling a shy but happy smile. "I love you too, Luna."

"R-really?" she asked, surprised.

"Yes, really. I can relate; I've had a crush on you for quite some time." This evoked a laugh from both of us, and soon after I found myself leaning against my newfound love, sighing contentedly. She reached out and put a wing around me, pulling me in closer. Never had I been so happy.

"Did I do it right?" she asked.

"You did it perfectly, Luna. I have never been happier."

She then kissed me between the ears, evoking a satisfied purring noise. All I felt was love, and I knew that if I could, I'd spend eternity here stargazing with Luna.
