//-------------------------------------------------------// Where Your Heart Is -by SunTwi06- //-------------------------------------------------------// //-------------------------------------------------------// Finding Time To Mend a Heart //-------------------------------------------------------// Finding Time To Mend a Heart A soft knock broke the silence surrounding Fluttershy’s humble abode. Lowering the volume of the T.V., lifting herself off the couch, Fluttershy slowly walks toward the door. The window to the right offered a clear view of the orange sky outside her house. It was already past sunset, far too late for visitors at this hour. Not that she ever got many visitors to begin with. Regardless, it was not Fluttershy’s nature to brush them off. Taking a deep breath, Fluttershy stretched her body and reached for the door handle. Opening the door, she was greeted by none other than one of her old friends: Rainbow Dash, dressed in a rainbow-styled t-shirt and short-shorts. Fluttershy’s heart skipped a bit, though she was far from upset to see her here of all days. “Oh, R-Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy greeted. She outstretched her arms offering a platonic hug, which Rainbow Dash accepted, though rather weakly. Fluttershy was curious, there was something off about her friend. Still, her happiness in seeing her brushed off any concern she had, at least for the time being. “I’m glad you could come visit,” Fluttershy continued, shyly. “Yeah, me too,” Rainbow Dash said, fidgeting. “Hey, can we go to your room? There’s something bothering me, and I prefer we talk privately.” Rainbow Dash’s choice of words sounded rather serious, even though Fluttershy didn’t doubt her friend for a second. Regardless, something felt off with her tone increasing Fluttershy’s concerns. She moves to the side, stretching her arms out as a gesture for Rainbow Dash to enter. “I have snacks in the kitchen,” Fluttershy offered. “Can I get you anything?” “Nah, I ate on the way,” Rainbow Dash chuckled, brushing it off. “Thanks anyway.” “Are you sure? It’s no trouble at all.” “Fluttershy, thanks. But I just want to talk.” The moment Rainbow Dash opened her mouth, she fell silent and looked around. “This isn’t a bad time, is it?” “Oh, n-no, no! This is a perfect time,” Fluttershy waved her hands, reassuring. “There’s never a bad time for us.” Something very nice about Fluttershy’s smile, as Rainbow Dash returned the favor. Though it was clear the smile was forced. Eventually, they climb up the stairs to Fluttershy’s bedroom, close the door behind them, and took a seat on her bed. “Sorry if this is too sudden,” Rainbow Dash spoke. “But… I didn’t know who else to turn to.” Tilting her head to the right, Fluttershy gave Rainbow Dash an understanding smile toward her predicament, realizing the source of her uneasiness. “Ah, I see… You need help with ideas for Soarin’, right? I know you two have been dating for a while.” True to the word, Rainbow Dash and Soarin’ have been dating for a while. Since the day she worked up enough courage to ask Soarin’ to their high school dance months ago, the two were nearly inseparable, two teenage lovebirds happy with one another during the second semester of senior year. They would go out often every other Saturday Night, and on occasion, Rainbow Dash would treat Soarin’ with something special, even if meant just buying him a trinket as a gift. It seemed these two really had it made. But there was one flaw Rainbow Dash had been working on: Her tendency with wanting to know what Soarin’ was up to. Fluttershy could hardly blame Rainbow Dash, since up till Soarin’ she never dated anybody before. Either way, Fluttershy was always there for her and always offered to help whenever Rainbow Dash needed it. Of course, she admits she was a little jealous he was the one receiving gifts and affection. Not that Fluttershy couldn’t be happy for her, and why wouldn’t she? They’ve been the best of friends since they were kids. But of course, Fluttershy herself had a secret: Rainbow Dash mattered more to her than life itself, more than just a normal friendship. As far back as she could recall, Fluttershy had a one-sided crush on Rainbow Dash. She did her best to draw her attention during her awkward years in middle schools, but it was all in vain as it went over her head. As time progressed, she gave up entirely thinking it was fruitless to get her to notice her friend’s feelings. Nevertheless, Fluttershy’s love for Rainbow Dash remained intact. To that end, she made a pact for herself: Even if she couldn’t be the love of Rainbow’s life, she would devote herself as best friend and help her anyway she could. No matter how big or small the matter was, even if it meant sacrificing her own happiness, just for Fluttershy to be beside Rainbow Dash is more than enough. It was then she noticed the glum manner on Rainbow Dash’s face, scratching the back of her head while facing downward. “Yeah… Fluttershy, that’s kinda what I want to talk to you about.” “Oh? And what’s that?” Fluttershy asked, curiously. “I don’t know how to put it, but… Soarin’ and I… That is… Me and Soarin’… We’re… We’re no longer together.” Fluttershy’s smile began to sink, her eyes changed as her expression grew. “W-What? Rainbow Dash, what happened? I thought you two were so happy!” “Yeah, well… That’s why I’m here.” Rainbow Dash reached into her pocket for her phone. Fluttershy watched attentively, as her friend scrolled down to her more recent conversation with Soarin’. “You should read this,” Rainbow Dash said, passing the phone. “And I mean the ‘entire’ conversation. I’m not asking you to listen to just my side; I need you to hear both sides. You’re the only girl I know who reads people better than I do. Maybe you can help me figure out what I did wrong.” And so, Fluttershy started reading… The whole conversation, in her eyes, was biblical. The texts sunk into venomous territory with every exchange, until at last she made it to Soarin’s final message: “I’m sorry Dashie, but I don’t think there is anything we can do to fix this. My scholarship, this new internship, I can’t just throw it all way. I know it’s a lot to take in, but this was the hardest decision I had to make, for both of us. I don’t want to hurt you, but I think we’d be better off just friends. Please don’t be mad.” The sad realization set in. True, Fluttershy had her own selfish fantasies of being with Rainbow Dash. But even she never wished for her relationship with Soarin’ to end this way, the worst way to break up with anyone. But since she couldn’t tell Rainbow Dash of her feelings, all she could do was try to understand the severity of the situation. “So… He just left you? Just like that?” “Over a dumb text!” Rainbow Dash remarked, bitterly. “I don’t understand men, Fluttershy. I thought for sure he was the one. I want to believe he had a good reason to throw in the towel. Perhaps I’d feel the same way if an opportunity like that came toward me. But no matter how hard I comprehend it, no matter how hard I try, it just feels unfair!” Feeling sympathetic over Rainbow’s frustration, Fluttershy placed a gentle hand on her friend’s shoulder. “Rainbow Dash, what happened between you two isn’t your fault. You shouldn’t feel guilty over one text.” “You know, when we first started dating, everything seemed to fall into place,” Rainbow Dash explained. “I thought he was a guy who saw me for ‘who’ I am, someone he would embrace without question. At least, that’s who I thought he was. But he barely speaks to me. He didn’t even ‘try’ to make this work!” The more Rainbow Dash talked, the angrier her face became. But quickly, it disappeared in the blink of an eye as she took a deep breath. “I feel… Hurt.” “Rainbow Dash, I—” “I should’ve seen this coming a mile away! Soarin’s too good for the likes of me; I should’ve known he would do this to me since Day One. But it feels like a million bees stinging my heart, after all these months he casts me aside like an old hat!” The whole time Fluttershy listened to Rainbow Dash’s rant, she never left her side. Eventually, she walked toward her, her one true yet unrequited love, and hugged her as tightly as she could. Leaning towards her left ear, behind her back, she felt Rainbow’s steady heartbeat, but it was slow… Melancholic… Grieving. “I understand your pain, Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy whispered softly, closing her eyes. “More than you realize…” “But you must realize deep within your heart it was probably the hardest decision for him too. I may not know Soarin’ as well as you did, but he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy to toy with a girl’s heart. I’m sure his feelings were real, that much is certain. But… Life always stabs you in the back, right?” A weak laugh escaped Fluttershy’s lips, a vain attempt to life Rainbow Dash’s spirits. For obvious reasons, it did nothing to cheer her up. Still, Fluttershy would do anything to make the pain go away, just as Rainbow Dash did everything to help her in return during her moments of anguish. After all, she was the one who mattered to her, the one who meant more to her than any of the friends she ever had. All her life, Fluttershy wanted to at least return the favor. Longing for nothing more than to make her embrace last for eternity, to finally confess to Rainbow Dash in this very moment. But… She knew she would be putting herself before her best friend and, given the circumstances, it would be in very poor taste. That thought lingered in her mind, since the beginning, the overwhelming fear of rejection. The sole reason she’s disputed whether or not to tell the truth. She felt that same sentimentality overwhelm her, but she didn’t know whether she harbored those true feelings or not. Looking back, Fluttershy had those doubts she tried holding Rainbow’s hand back in the 8th grade. From her point of view, she was just the girl next door, someone who didn’t have a chance of having someone like Rainbow Dash. Suddenly, Fluttershy felt something wet hit her hand, snapping her back to reality. Opening her eyes, she noticed Rainbow Dash was crying, trying to hold back from sobbing in front of her friend but it was completely fruitless. “I don’t blame him, Fluttershy,” Rainbow Dash said, wiping her tears. “I’d just be in his way. Besides, there are plenty of other girls prettier than me…” There was no doubt on Fluttershy’s mind: Rainbow Dash was clearly suffering from a guilt trip. Something needed to be said, to stop this self-loathing before it completely clouds her judgment. Fluttershy took a deep breath, before settling with a vague statement, holding some hint of her own truth. “I don’t know if this helps…” Fluttershy informed, smiling sadly. “But I have a feeling there ‘is’ someone who would do anything to be with you. A very nice person.” For a brief moment, Rainbow Dash stopped crying. Seeing her through rapid tears, Fluttershy’s words were as genuine as her hug. But her frown returns as she looks out the window, toward the partly cloudy skies. It seemed she was still searching for a sign of her current situation. “If that’s true, I must’ve pushed them away by now,” Rainbow Dash reason. “I don’t think there is, though.” A disappointed sigh escaped Fluttershy, as she shook her head. Her mind screaming ‘Confess! Confess!’, but she knew in her heart this was not the time or place. She didn’t want to give the impression she’d say so out of pity, despite the contrary. “This probably won’t work, but maybe… I could—” Before she could finish her thought, a single idea came to mind. She had no clue if it would soothe the troubled waters, but better to try and fail than ‘never’ try at all. “H-Hey, Rainbow Dash?” She said softly, tapping her shoulder. Rainbow Dash slowly turned her head, her eyes facing Fluttershy attentively. “I understand you’re sad, and the last thing I want is to see you suffer. Anyways, I have some money I’ve been saving in my piggy bank and I was thinking… Why don’t we go to Equestria Land tomorrow? That’s always fun.” “Equestria Land?” Rainbow Dash questioned, tilting her head. “As in, the ‘amusement park’, Equestria Land? You do know that place is expensive, right?” “It’s okay, Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy smiled, walking toward her closet. “We haven’t been there since middle school. Does that scary maze bring back memories? I certainly enjoyed it.” “If I remember correctly,” Rainbow Dash smirked. “’I’ enjoyed the maze; you chickened out last time.” Fluttershy giggled nervously, reminded of her last attempt to go in the maze… But she bailed after taking two steps. “O-Oh yeah, I did. But I’m not scared anymore! I’d love to give it another try.” Rainbow Dash kept her smile, though it was forlorn with a brooding feeling. Once again, she turned away as Fluttershy looked on. “Fluttershy, you’re my best friend. You work too hard to waste your money on me. We can just chill out here and that would be more than enough.” Hearing this gave Fluttershy goosebumps, as she realized how warm her cheeks felt. Rainbow Dash always had ways of making her feel special, even unintentionally. But she promised that as her best friend she would find a way to make it the best day of Rainbow Dash's life. It wouldn’t matter if she earned her love or not; the only thing Fluttershy wants is to see Rainbow Dash’s smile. Just the way she used to do for her, whenever Fluttershy was afraid and isolated. Now, this was her chance to prove she’s no longer the same little girl who gets scared easily. This was her chance to be that reliable friend Rainbow Dash needs. “C’mon, Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy tried. “You and I both know how easily bored you get when there’s nothing to do and there’s no better time to have fun than tomorrow. Just you and me, no Soarin’, no drama, and no tears. Just the two of us having mindless fun, just like back in the days when we vomit after riding those big rollercoasters. Won’t you go with me? Please?” Turning around, Rainbow Dash was face-to-face with the biggest, wide-eyed, cutesy face Fluttershy has ever mustered. Not wanting to crush Fluttershy’s spirits, not that she really had anything better to do, Rainbow Dash sighs with a partial smile. “Oh, alright,” Rainbow Dash relented. “I suppose there’s no harm if it gets my mind off things. But those tickets aren’t exactly a dollar, you know. You sure you want to do this?” “Mr. Piggy is feeling awful generous today, so no worries.” Rainbow Dash chuckled, as Fluttershy giggled at her own joke. “Fluttershy, heh-heh… Never say that again.” “Hey, I got you to laugh! That’s the Rainbow Dash I know!” “Yea, yea! You win!” “Admit it, I got you good. Come on…” Rainbow Dash’s smile grew, as Fluttershy lit with joy. No words could describe how happy Fluttershy felt seeing that smile. A shame about Soarin’, as nice a guy as he seemed, he had no idea what he was missing. The girls’ moment grew silent as they stared into each other’s eyes, possibly reminiscing the various childhood memories they had when they were kids. With school over, those simpler times would soon end. But tomorrow… Tomorrow wasn’t that day. “So… I guess I’ll have to be up bright and early to wake you on time?” Rainbow Dash inquired, playfully. “I know how often you oversleep.” “Being cute takes effort, you know,” Fluttershy retorted. “Beauty sleep makes girls prettier; you should try it.” “Nah… Too cool for ‘pretty’. But thanks for the offer.” Rising off the bed, though Rainbow Dash was still beat from the breakup, Fluttershy noticed her friend was feeling better, if not slightly. “Fluttershy… Thanks,” Rainbow Dash uttered. “I mean it. You’re the one good friend I can depend on when everything goes wrong in my life.” “I’d like to be more than just a good friend,” Fluttershy thought. She wanted to say it out loud, her heart demanding for her to speak out… But reluctantly, she held back. Now just wasn’t the right time. “You’ve done the same for me,” Fluttershy insisted, warmly. “If you’d like to stay over, you’re more than welcome.” “No, it’s fine,” Rainbow Dash shook her head. “I’m not exactly back to normal just yet. I have tons of issues on my mind; I don’t want to ruin your night. At least any more than as far as I could.” “I really don’t mind, Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy frowned, pitifully. “Friends are supposed to be for one another. What type of friend would tell you to suck it up?” “Applejack,” Rainbow Dash chuckled. “Oh yes, she can be… upfront. But truly, are you ‘sure’ you don’t want to stay?” On the inside, Fluttershy was practically begging: “Please stay with me in my arms! I love you, Rainbow Dash!” “I’m sure, Fluttershy. But don’t you worry, the girl you’ve today will leave tomorrow. I’ll save that for after we’ve had our… Fun time.” Rainbow Dash meant it as a joke, that much Fluttershy knew. But she also knew it made her feel worse. As much as she longed to say something, she reluctantly bit her tongue and nodded. Fluttershy had to accept that when her friend set her mind to something, she hardly changed it. Rising from her bed, Fluttershy walks toward Rainbow Dash, giving her the tightest hug, one she could ever give. “Thank you for trusting me enough to tell me this, Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy said. “If you ever start having those nasty thoughts again, you can always come to me. Please don’t be too mad at Soarin’. He’s a good guy, I’m sure he knows what he did was awful. Just know he wouldn’t have done it without good reason, okay?” “Y-Yeah, of course,” Rainbow Dash muttered. “Um… Fluttershy…? My breathing’s starting to get shallow here…” Fluttershy’s eyes widen, as she immediately released her. “Oh, s-sorry about that!” “Don’t worry about it, I’m fine. Just not so used to being someone’s teddy bear.” Fluttershy breathed a sigh of relief, her friend’s tone was soft and forgiving. She could listen to that all night. “So… I’ll see you tomorrow?” “Hmm… Oh yes, of course! See you tomorrow!” Rainbow Dash smiled, as she turned away and walked out of the room. Fluttershy watched from upstairs, as her friend left the house before closing her door. She turns toward her stuffed bunny on the bed, her most prized possession. She remembered that day: When Rainbow Dash won that stuffed animal for her during the elementary school carnival, when they were in 5th grade. Fluttershy always felt a sense of comfort when she held it during bed, as if a part of Rainbow Dash were with her. She hopped along the bed, grabbing her stuffed bunny, as she gazed at the dusky sky above her. Giving her just enough time to wonder… Wishing… Yearning… Fluttershy would do everything within her power to ensure Rainbow Dash had the best day of her life. She promised tomorrow would be special, to show her best friend how much she cares for her… Maybe realize how much she loves her. Of course, Fluttershy always had trouble when it comes to waking up early. But that wouldn’t be a problem, so long as that means spending more time with Rainbow Dash. Hugging the stuffed bunny to her chest, laying it by her side, eventually Fluttershy fell asleep, comfortably conjuring the best dream she could muster… Just her and Rainbow Dash… Forever… //-------------------------------------------------------// Breakfast at Fluttershy's //-------------------------------------------------------// Breakfast at Fluttershy's “Fluttershy? Fluttershy? Time to get up…” Fluttershy stirred from her deep slumber, hearing a voice calling to her like an angel. “Rainbow Dash? Are you here? Summer vacation’s started, so you couldn’t be… Could you?” In her groggy state-of-mind, Fluttershy felt lost trying to put a finger on what she planned. She recalled something about Rainbow Dash, something involving the two of them doing something together. But it was summer, the last thing she wanted to do was get out of bed. “Mmmph…” Fluttershy managed to say. “C’mon, Fluttershy!” Rainbow Dash sang quietly, before shaking one of her arms. “You need to get out of bed. We made plans, remember?” Suddenly, Fluttershy’s eyes shot open and she remembered it all. Their special trip to an amusement park, just for two. “Oh no! Today’s her special day and I slept in!” Fluttershy thought, panicking. “Darn it, Fluttershy, you ruined her morning!” “Uh… Fluttershy?” Rainbow Dash asked, awkwardly. “R-Rainbow Dash!” Fluttershy exclaimed, drowsily. “I’m so sorry! I swear I went to sleep at a decent hour!” Rainbow Dash, however, was far from peeved. On the contrary, when she made eye contact with Fluttershy, a slight smile formed as if she discovered her cute side. “I know,” Rainbow Dash nodded. “I figured you needed a wake-up call, just in case.” Fluttershy turned her heard toward the clock, which read 7:05 am on display. The morning sun, still rising, gave her room a slight glow. She felt nothing but relief – having realized she did wake up at a reasonable hour. “I’m sorry, Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy mumbled. “You just startled me a little; you didn’t need to wake up early for me. This is your day.” “It’s alright, I know how you are,” Rainbow nodded, her smile fading. “Honestly, I couldn’t sleep well last night, anyway.” Fluttershy placed a hand on Dash’s shoulder, her friend turning toward her. “Still thinking about ‘he who should not be named’?” “Yeah, look…” Rainbow began, hesitantly. “I know you said I shouldn’t think about him, but… This is really hard for me.” Fluttershy understood all too well, having thought about Rainbow Dash so much she barely slept. Back in middle school, they were inseparable 24/7, even when they were kids. But the last thing Fluttershy wanted to do was make Rainbow Dash feel miserable. She would blame herself if she made her best friend feel that way. A selfish ambition, this much she knew. But Fluttershy refused to let it weigh her down, for Rainbow Dash is still her best friend and her well-being means more than her own. Feeling the past drifting her away, Fluttershy worked up a silly smile toward Rainbow Dash. “Well, let’s not let that ruin your day,” Fluttershy commanded, playfully. “Today’s your big day and we’re going to have lots of fun, I just know it.” Even though they are completely different, folks were right when they say Fluttershy shares a likeness to Pinkie Pie. Though she would like to think it’s because they are both determined. Even if not on a daily basis, Fluttershy’s demeanor is the first thing that would calm everyone around her. More than enough to make Rainbow Dash smile. “Thank you, Fluttershy. That means a lot to me.” Fluttershy hopped out of bed with newfound energy. “Just need to take a quick shower and we’ll be on our way.” “I doubt it,” Rainbow Dash smirked. “We both know you like long showers.” “R-Right, of course,” Fluttershy blushed, scratching the back of her head. “Um… Could I maybe have some privacy, place?” “Oh, uh, yeah sure. I’ll just grab a bite downstairs; take your time, the park doesn’t open for a couple hours.” Fluttershy giggled. The more time they had to learn from one another, the more Rainbow Dash developed a way to use words purposely to comfort her friend. If Fluttershy were the Element of Kindness, Rainbow Dash, by default, was the Element of Comfort. The duo were dependable for one another, perhaps more than either realized. As Rainbow Dash left the room, walking downstairs, Fluttershy approached the bathroom and closed the door. She turns the shower on, twisting the handle and with one hand tests the water for the right temperature. When it was just right, Fluttershy discards her evening wear to the side and cautiously steps onto the shower mat. Fluttershy felt the drowsiness leave her body once the hot water contacted her face. New energy brimmed with her, her mind running rabid of every possibility of her and her friend together. Riding roller coasters, running the obstacle course, possibly traversing the haunted house together… On that note, Fluttershy couldn’t deny that image gave her chills. Growing up, she never loved haunted houses since she’s been a scaredy-cat since birth. But she knew she had to face her fears at some point in her life. This summer marked the conclusion to her pre-adult life. Though her feelings for Rainbow Dash remain unrequited, should she succeed at overcoming her greatest fear, maybe then it will cut one final thread to her chapter. This summer, Fluttershy was ready and she’d face her fears for Rainbow Dash. After all, she was always there to push Fluttershy through hard times and she’s grown as not just a woman, but a person. If she didn’t own up to her fears now, she’ll never be able to face Rainbow Dash again. And then… Her thoughts went to Soarin’, officially Rainbow Dash’s ex-boyfriend. Now to be fair, what Soarin’ did was unforgivable, not so much breaking up with her friend but the fact he couldn’t say so to her face. Yet in spite of what she thought, she knew better to get in between and cause further drama… Though her inner rage said otherwise. “Even if he was forced to choose, why would Soarin’ ditch a perfect, loving, and sweet friend like Rainbow Dash?” Then again, maybe this was a blessing in disguise… For her. But for Fluttershy, it had to be the ‘right time’ at the ‘right place’. Turning the water off, Fluttershy grabbed a towel off the rack and dried all the excess water off her smooth skin. Quickly running to her room, careful not to slip, she quickly throws an outfit together: A long green dress, a pair of blue sandals, and, of course, a cloche hat she often wore on hot summer days. As she got dressed, she giggled to herself over how worked up she was. Still, when push comes to shove, there was nothing that could change her mind. Not that she ever had the mind for it, of course. “Okay, Rainbow Dash!” Fluttershy called out, dashing down the stairs. “Sorry I took so long; I just had to—” Fluttershy skid to a halt and stared with her eyes wide. There was Rainbow Dash, in front of the stove… Cooking. She wore a cooking apron, likely brought from home, and she was cooking eggs and sausage while whistling a tune. “Rainbow Dash!” Fluttershy frowned, disappointingly. “What are you doing?” “Uh… Cooking breakfast?” Rainbow Dash replied. “Kinda do that a lot.” “No, no, no!” Fluttershy interjected, rushing to her side. “This is your special day. Why are ‘you’ cooking breakfast?” “I dunno, just felt like making myself useful around here.” Fluttershy couldn’t help but smile. On one hand, Rainbow Dash cooking them breakfast was very sweet of her, to the point she could be an angel. But on the other hand, it made Fluttershy feel guilty to let her friend do all the cooking. “Is there anything I can do to help?” Fluttershy asked. “You can’t be the only one doing all the work.” “Well…” Rainbow pondered, for a moment. “These eggs could use a little salt. They’re almost ready.” “Okay!” Fluttershy said, eagerly. She grabs the saltshaker from the table, approaches the stove and shook the salt… A little too hard. So hard, in fact, she drowned the eggs much to Rainbow Dash’s surprise. On any other day, Rainbow Dash would chew out her friend for ruining a good meal… But after her meltdown last night, that was no way to treat a friend who’s always been loyal to her. What she did, however, was take the salt from her hand. “I think that’s enough,” Rainbow chuckled, giving a thumbs up. “Good job!” “Yay!” Fluttershy beamed. “Oh, Rainbow Dash?” “Hmm?” “I just want to thank you for your help. Not just this morning, but every time you come over my house. You do so much for me, you know?” Fluttershy smiled toward Rainbow Dash, but in her mind she felt guilty. So guilty, her curiosity took over. “Was Soarin’ ever jealous of me?” Fluttershy thought. “Nonsense! It’s no trouble at all,” Rainbow Dash assured, placing the eggs on the plates. “We still got time before ‘Equestria Land’ opens, anyway. No rush.” “What makes you think I was rushing?” Fluttershy asked, innocently. Rainbow Dash turned to Fluttershy, an eyebrow raised. “Well, for one, your dress is on backwards, and wrong side-out.” “Oh!” She interjected, looking down at her dress. “I’ll fix it later. Right now, I’m kind of hungry.” “Well then, let’s eat!” Rainbow Dash proclaimed, with dramatic fanfare. True, the image of over-salted eggs put Rainbow Dash off, but she would do anything to please Fluttershy. At least she was nearly close to forgetting about… Soarin’. In that moment, she started to recall the agonizing, heart-wrenching details from yesterday. This didn't go unnoticed, as Fluttershy noticed her friend’s smile disappear. “Hey, what’s wrong?” “Hmm? Oh, no, forget about it,” Rainbow shook her head. “Come on, let’s eat.” “It doesn’t seem like nothing. Rainbow, you’re not thinking about ‘he who should not be named’, are you?” Rainbow Dash kept quiet, but there was no fooling a friend who knows her so well. “Look Fluttershy, I promise it’s not your fault. Like I said, I have a lot on my mind.” Walking to the fridge, Fluttershy pulls out a carton of orange juice, and pours two glasses, one for Rainbow Dash and one for herself. The taste was sweet and delicious, just enough to help take Rainbow Dash’s mind off those terrible thoughts. “I understand it’s hard, Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy assured, with her most cheerful smile. “But it’s best to forget about him for the time being. This is your special day and he’s not going to ruin it for you.” That smile… The one thing that kept Rainbow Dash in line from giving in to her negative emotions. Inhaling sharply, trying to down thoughts of Soarin’, her mind returned to the fun day they had to look forward to. Sitting at the table and grabbing her glass, Rainbow Dash turns to Fluttershy with a small, decent smile. “Thanks, Fluttershy,” Rainbow Dash thanked, taking a sip. “You do so much for me, you know?” “Aw, d-don’t be silly,” Fluttershy blushed, turning away. “W-What are f-friends for?” Rainbow Dash may not have noticed Fluttershy’s cheeks burning like they were on fire, but her smile grew. Even if her love for Soarin’ eventually nulls out, her friendship with Fluttershy still holds strong. She could never ask for a better friend in her life, as she ate every last egg to the yolk without an objection. //-------------------------------------------------------// Conquering Fears and Mixed Emotions //-------------------------------------------------------// Conquering Fears and Mixed Emotions It was still daybreak as bus rolled through town square, two friends were anxious for all the things to do. While Rainbow Dash gazed out the window watching the sights, Fluttershy’s eyes were all on her. Just when she was about to reach out and hold her hand, her fear overtook her. She wanted to talk, to say even ‘one’ syllable, but she found it hard to speak… Especially about her feelings. Just as when she ready, the bus pulled to a stop. “LAST STOP!” The bus driver called out. Fluttershy stood up and allowed Rainbow Dash to slide out her spot, doing her best to hide the blush on her cheeks. Stepping off the bus first, Rainbow Dash waited for Fluttershy as she thanked the driver, offered a small tip, and climbed down the steps till the girls were side by side. They walked together, making their way toward a nearby bench, where they would sit down and figure out what to do first. For the first hour, the two girls went on a couple rides together until Rainbow Dash spotted the haunted house. Under different circumstances, Fluttershy would either run away or insist she shouldn’t go. However, she made a promise to herself to spend the entire day with Rainbow Dash, even if it means mustering the courage within and pushed forward to an attraction clearly out of her comfort zone. Unfortunately, this proved to be a mistake the moment they went through the doors. She quickly took hold Rainbow Dash’s arm, quivering as they slowly enter the haunted house. “R-Rainbow Dash?” Fluttershy shuttered. “I-I-I-I’m having s-s-s-second thoughts. C-Can w-we t-try something else? T-This place… Is-s-s… Scary…” The former shook her head but threw a look of light pity. “Sorry Fluttershy, no turning back now. You’re a big girl now, right?” But Fluttershy felt less like a big girl, deep down she knew she was still that same crybaby from elementary school. Plus, that wasn’t the only feeling she felt apart from looking for a chance to leave. Among other things, she really… Really… Really had to use the bathroom. “Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy moaned, desperately. “I gotta pee.” “Now? You should’ve gone before we went in,” Rainbow Dash reminded. Rainbow couldn’t resist chuckling over her companion’s dilemma, even if it did come off as somewhat vile. Not the first time this ever happened on their ventures. “I didn’t think I’d have to go this b-badly!” Fluttershy exclaimed, fidgeting. They soon reached the one area where all the scary monsters randomly pop out, as sound effects simulated the roars and moans the ghosts and goblins would make. They’d pop out of gravestones, behind makeshift trees, and even from the ceiling. It didn’t help the fact this part of the Haunted House was in the dark. The more Fluttershy thought of when the next monster would pop out, the worst her anxiety felt. “I knew it… I really am all talk… I can’t even go through one haunted house with so much as a yelp. Who’d want a big chicken like me for a girlfriend? I’ve always been a coward… Always have… Always will be… Rainbow Dash deserves better…” But as they pressed on, Fluttershy felt a firm grasp over her hand. Fluttershy turned to notice Rainbow Dash hold onto her. She gave her friend a reassuring nod, as the two strolled through the haunted house with burning courage in their hearts. Rainbow Dash never left her side; nothing could persuade Fluttershy to leave. So long as her friend was always by her side from the beginning, something she always held dear to her heart, Fluttershy would go through with it. After all, they were together and that’s all that matters. Her negativity vanishing, positivity shined within her once again. She knew she could do it, confession or otherwise. Her whole life had built up to this pivotal moment in her life. Even if she never expected a ‘yes’, at least they had each other and would have closure. Fluttershy returned the gesture with her adorable smile, facing forward with a determined gaze. Still, she couldn’t help but ponder what happens next. “I can do this,” She whispered to herself. She kept repeating those four words over and over, trying to fight off the terrifying atmosphere. In that very moment, one of the monsters popped out. “I can’t do this!” Fluttershy shrieked. Fluttershy ran as fast as her feet could carry her, not thinking for one moment nor realize she was still holding Rainbow Dash’s hand. She could feel the butterflies in her stomach, gripping onto Rainbow Dash out of safety, praying she could get out of that house as fast as she could. Fluttershy barely had recollection of what the house looked like because her eyes were closed the entire time. All she remembered were the screams, the chills, and the somersaults her stomach performed as she moved. She couldn’t lie, she ‘really’ needed to pee more than ever. She could feel her bladder ready to pop like an overinflated balloon and all before they even left. She dropped upon her knees, feeling that pressure intensify, unable to get off the ground as she was paralyzed by intense fear. Rainbow Dash lifted her up by the hand, offering a proud grin. “You did it, Fluttershy,” Rainbow commended. “You overcame your fears and made it through the whole house!” “Y-yeah,” Fluttershy giggled. “But I owe it all to you. I always feel safer when I’m with you.” Without hesitating, Fluttershy hugged Rainbow Dash. She couldn’t resist; she was too good for her. Others may chew her out for being chicken, but not Rainbow Dash. She alone gave her confidence to face her fears and because of her Fluttershy endured the house to the bitter end. She suddenly realized what she was doing and released her hug. “S-Sorry! I don’t know what came over me, I just…” In that moment, that feeling in her gut made her eyes widen, reminding her why she rushed out of that house. “Oh… Sweet mercy… I have to pee!” With that awkward declaration, Fluttershy dashed away through the exit, which revealed a small gift shop for the attendees, and desperately searched for the restroom. Along the way, she noticed a few knick-knacks on display and while some were being sold across the park, there were t-shirts left unseen by the public. “Perhaps Rainbow and I could do some shopping before we leave,” Fluttershy thought. Spotting the girl’s bathroom, Fluttershy made a beeline and dashed inside. Meanwhile, as she waited, Rainbow Dash waltzed around the entire gift shop. Shifting her focus to the right, she noticed several pictures of people of their haunted house experience. Rainbow Dash had a brief retrospect of her childhood, remembering being calm and collected after entering the Haunted House. Fluttershy, on the other hand, held onto her like a lost child, never letting go. She chuckled at that moment, ironic how it was Fluttershy’s idea to do this house in the first place. But that didn’t bother her; on the contrary, that experience made it all the more endearing. Rainbow Dash would do anything to make that memory last forever. The last day of their childhood and Fluttershy finally conquered one of her fears. The least she could do is buy Fluttershy a little memento, so she never forgets this day. Digging through her pocket, she grabs her wallet and approached the cashier. “Hey there,” She greeted, drawing a $20. “One photo of that girl and I, please.” Taking the money, the cashier, a goth chick with a nose ring took one look at the photo and chuckled. “Teasing your girlfriend with that picture?” “Huh?” Rainbow Dash asked, surprised at the remark. “Oh, no, no! Just friends. Good friends, but friends… Seriously.” “Really?” The cashier frowned. “You two looked like you were made for each other. Didn’t catch that look in her eyes?” “Just… Give me the picture!” “Whatever…” Rainbow Dash grabs the picture and slips it into a frame, which she places in her bag for safe keeping. “Look… We’re not into each other that much. We’ve been best friends since we were kids. Besides, if she ‘really’ like me, wouldn’t she have said so by now?” The cashier just stared daggers, as if she could pierce through Rainbow Dash’s soul. The kind of look that says, ‘Are you serious?’, which Rainbow Dash found ‘very’ uncomfortable. “And she didn’t clue in on the fact she wants you to make the first move?” “I’m sure she would’ve given me ideas in the first place. Even if that wasn’t the case, I’m pretty sure I would’ve noticed.” “Right…” The cashier sighed, disappointed. “Just… Try to clear it up with her sometime. If she finds out and you didn’t tell her… You’re both going to be miserable for the rest of your lives.” Rainbow Dash turned away, but she already felt the cashier’s words weigh down. “… Maybe I will,” She thought. At that moment, Rainbow Dash drew out her phone absentmindedly. Her eyes widen noticing several missed calls on her phone, which she wouldn’t have known because her phone was on silent. Even worse: They all came from Soarin’. The heart emoji was still there, but she didn’t care to edit it out. But that’s not even what got her attention. Apparently, Soarin’ had been trying to call her… Repeatedly. Rainbow Dash already knew this day would come. She knew Fluttershy would be unhappy if she spoke a word to Soarin’, one day after having her heart broken. Still, Rainbow Dash was under an obligation that he wouldn’t call her without probable cause. Driven by curiosity, Rainbow Dash had to know what’s going on. She made to punch the recent call… But then stopped. Should Rainbow Dash even answer him? After all, Soarin’ broke her heart and Rainbow Dash didn’t want to think about him. But… He ‘did’ try to reach out to her. Maybe there was some truth behind his actions, and she would miss out. Clearly, ignoring him has done her no good, so the least she could do is at least hear him out. Having made up her mind, taking a deep breath… Rainbow Dash dialed the number. One ring… Two rings… “Rainbow Dash!” Soarin’ exclaimed, in relief. “Boy, am I glad you’re okay. I came over to your house, but you already left. I almost thought you did the unthinkable.” As Rainbow Dash listened silently, she could sense genuine concern in his voice. If he was telling the truth, perhaps he still sees her as the young woman he actually cares about. Rainbow Dash felt relieved learning this, she almost forgot she was on the phone. “Rainbow Dash? Are you there?” “Uh, yeah… Hey! Course, I’m alright. Just needed a day for myself; get so restless when I’m doing nothing, you know?” “Oh yes, of course,” Soarin’ acknowledged. “… This is about… Um… The other day… Isn’t it?” “Yea,” Rainbow Dash answered, coolly. Awkward silence ensued, both parties waiting for each other to speak. For one full minute, neither one of them did. “Hello?” Soarin’ spoke, breaking the silence. “Yeah, I’m still here,” Rainbow Dash confirmed. “Oh, good,” Soarin said, awkwardly. “Look… I want to apologize. Everything I said, over that text… That was wrong. I know what you’re gonna say… And you’re right! You’re right… I should’ve told you face-to-face. I needed to be the man you wanted me to be, but I was too afraid to see how you’d react. Especially for how much time we spent together.” A cold feeling swept over Rainbow Dash, consuming her heart. Soarin’ seriously believed an ‘apology’ would fix what happened between them. No… It didn’t. He drove the stake first and there was no holding back. “Soarin’… I don’t want your apology,” Rainbow Dash replied, trying not to be mad. “Not now. What you said, over the phone, was the nastiest thing to happen to me. I felt we had something special, and you just threw it away… Like it didn’t matter anymore.” “That’s the problem, we did matter!” Soarin’ shouted, shakily. “I-I-I was in love with you, nothing’s changed! It’s just… I ‘had to’ end it, We were going to be so far away from one another—” “STOP! Just… Stop!” Rainbow shouted. “You broke up with me because you ‘had to’? After everything we went through, you weren’t even gonna try?!” It was then Rainbow Dash noticed several heads turn toward her. She started to blush with a shy frown. “What are you looking at?! I’m TRYING to have a conversation!!!” Not wanting any trouble, everyone immediately resumed their business while Rainbow Dash took a deep breath. There was an awkward silence on the other end, till Soarin’s voice began to crack. “I’m… I’m sorry, I… This is a bad time. I’ll call you back later.” The conversation ended with those final words. Rainbow Dash loathed herself, realizing what she did. If she didn’t hate herself before, this awkward moment sealed the deal. She had no idea what came over her. She had every right to be angry with Soarin’, he was the one who broke up with her leaving her hurt and shattering her trust. She hoped he’d call back, if only to have a talk without snapping at him. But the phone never rang… He never called back… And Rainbow Dash blew it, literally… //-------------------------------------------------------// The Breaking Point //-------------------------------------------------------// The Breaking Point Rainbow Dash had no time to pity herself. She put her phone in her pocket just when Fluttershy emerged from the bathroom. Wiping her hands, having just washed, she turned to Rainbow Dash as the shoppers moved about. The latter’s meltdown quickly fell away, as she tried her best poker face. “So… Feeling better?” Rainbow Dash inquired. “Y-Yea, all better,” Fluttershy nodded. “I actually feel pretty great; I was pretty brave, right?” “Eh… I’m not so sure about that.” “What do you mean?” Rainbow Dash reached into the paper back, revealing the frame. “You looked like you were having a heart attack,” Rainbow Dash teased. “H-Hey! That’s just mean, Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy pouted, playfully. “Besides, you didn’t seem so cool the first time around. “Alright, alright, you got me there,” Rainbow Dash admits, moving a head to her shoulder. “But seriously: I’m really glad we did this. Nobody could pull it off like you.” “R-Rainbow Dash…” Fluttershy blushed. “You’re e-embarrassing me.” “Aw, you know it’s fair if I tease you a bit. Hey, wanna shop around? I actually want to see if any of the stores got something new since last time. “Actually… That sounds wonderful!” In the end, all either of them bought were matching blue t-shirts, each proudly proclaiming, “I Survived The Haunted House Of Doom!”. As Fluttershy puts her shirt in a shopping bag, Rainbow Dash noticed how large it looked compared to her size. Fluttershy caught her staring as she held the shirt close to her. “Feel it, it’s comfy,” Fluttershy smiled, cheerfully. “I’m using it as a pajama shirt.” Rainbow Dash raised her eyebrow as if to say, ‘Really?’. But she did so anyway, brushing one hand along the material. She had to admit the shirt was comfortable, cotton-soft like a cloud if she could ever imagine feeling one. Still, there was one thing that bothered her. “I hate to ask this but… Why?” Rainbow Dash asked. “Isn’t the whole point of buying this shirt is to ‘prove’ you overcame your fear?” “W-Well, I didn’t buy it to brag,” Fluttershy admitted, shyly. “I bought it for myself.” “What do you mean?” Fluttershy’s smile faded slightly, but still remained. More importantly, it was still as close to genuine happiness Rainbow Dash ever saw in her friend. “Okay… You got me,” Fluttershy began, fixing her hair. “For most of my life, I’ve always been afraid of the haunted house. When I was little, when I’d watch people go inside, I’d hear them scream at the top of their lungs. The last thing I ever wanted to do was go inside. I’d chicken out before I even get to the entrance and I’d be content staying in my shell.” As Fluttershy continued, she clutched the bag with the shirt inside. Holding it close as if it were some form of comfort. “So, I was thinking, whenever I go to bed and I have this shirt on, I can remind myself that I’m strong enough to face my fears directly. To always remind myself that even a girl like me can be brave, to be strong for another tomorrow.” “Wow, Fluttershy, that was beautiful… And sappy at the same time,” Rainbow Dash grinned. “Well, it’s all thanks to you,” Fluttershy smiled. “Can we stop for lunch now? I’m hungry.” “Is that right?” Rainbow asked, with a sly grin. “Hmph…” Fluttershy huffed. “It’s not like I eat a lot.” “Oh, you don’t… Well, we’ll have to fix that, won’t we?” The two of them laughed it off, as they left the gift shop. Eventually, they reach a good stand where all sorts of unhealthy foods were sold. In spot of how many times her stomach swung back-and-forth, Fluttershy was famished. While she ordered a simple salad and drink, Rainbow Dash ordered a burger, with large fries and medium drink. She offered to pay, but Fluttershy shoved her hand away. “I’m paying,” She informed, with a firm smile. “But—” “C’mon, it’s your special day.” “Yes, you’ve told me numerous times. But I have money, I can pay for my—” But Rainbow Dash never finished when Fluttershy slid a few more bills to the stand operator. “Too late,” Fluttershy smiled. Rainbow Dash sighed, as her meal was passed to her. “You know Fluttershy, there’s such a thing as being ‘too’ kind.” “Mm-hmm… I know.” Blissfully smiling, Fluttershy ate her salad as some dressing, in this case Ranch, smeared her lips before swallowing. Rainbow Dash had to stifle a giggle, but it was funny. They took their seat at a nearby table, eating their meal as Rainbow Dash took a look around. It truly was a beautiful day; the sky was clear and very little clouds. The park itself is naturally crowded; tons of people moved about. The sounds of joy, from both children and adults alike, filled the landscape, the rollercoasters zooming side to side and the chimes and dings of the carnival games echoed across the park. And yet, despite the loud noise and constant bumping, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy kept their attention towards one another. Rainbow Dash took a brief glance at her half-eaten burger before facing her best friend. “Fluttershy,” Dash finally said. “Thank you, for today. It’s been really great.” “You’re welcome,” Fluttershy said, blushing. “I’m just glad to see you happy.” “I’m grateful for coming here, the park is great. But, if there’s one thing that really makes me happy, it’s spending time with an amazing friend like you… Just like the good old days. I admit I’ve been feeling alone since… Well, you know…?” Rainbow Dash slouched back, relaxing her body, and placing her hands on the table. Fluttershy leans forward with her hand atop hers. “Don’t say that, Rainbow Dash. You’re never alone, so long as I’m here for you.” Rainbow Dash’s grin faltered, as if what Fluttershy said hit a sour note. “But… What if the day comes when we leave each other? I haven’t figured out what I wanted to do. I mean… I’m afraid that we might break apart and—” “Rainbow Dash, I couldn’t care less what excuses you-know-who made up. Breaking away only works if we allow it to. No matter what happens, I will always stick with you. Who knows? We can live with each other, maybe… Make even more friends.” Rainbow Dash was fond of this aspect Fluttershy developed, the one which grew whenever there was a problem to face. Whenever Dash worried for her future, her friend’s smile would always put her back on track. But she also knew not even Fluttershy can predict the future, especially when it concerns their friendship. Still, there was one thing that was absolutely certain: They would remain close to each other, no matter what. “What more could I ever ask for?” Rainbow Dash asked. She wanted to tell Fluttershy about the phone call; truth is that conversation was stuck on her mind. Despite everything, Soarin’ went through all the trouble trying to apologize and she threw it in his face. She let her emotions overcome her logic, again, and now it was up to her to make amends. If anything, Rainbow Dash could live with being friends with Soarin’. He was kind, smart, and surprisingly witty. There was no reason to believe he’d ever lie to her. Perhaps, if she had just given him the chance to explain himself, maybe they could’ve patched things up… But again, she took everything he said and threw it in his face. Still… Was there even a slim chance they could date again? No one said the offer was on the table, but either way Rainbow Dash would veto that choice. Because deep down, she knows what Soarin’ is like: Once he sets his mind to something, there was little to do to either change his mind or stop him from doing it again. Even if this were never planned, she wouldn’t allow him the benefit of the doubt. She wouldn’t cloud her judgment with Fluttershy, not with her cheerfulness, her dorky side, or even that inviting warmth… That was all Rainbow Dash needed to keep going. But the question still came: Could she like her that way? She said it herself that she would’ve caught on, but still Rainbow Dash couldn’t stop thinking what the clerk said. “Maybe she wanted me to make the first move…?” Rainbow Dash thought. “Now that I think about it, was Fluttershy ever in a relationship? Did she ever share her first kiss with anybody?” Rainbow Dash never once recalled Fluttershy being the flirty type. She was always so quiet, introverted, to herself. Yet she has noticed Fluttershy has been acting… Unusual lately. Her curiosity finally got the better of her as she could no longer keep her mouth shut. “Fluttershy?” Rainbow Dash spoke, breaking the silence. “Hmm?” Fluttershy turned. “This is going to sound like a dumb question, but… Bear with me. Have you ever, um… Ever had a boyfriend?” The moment that question was brought up, Fluttershy’s eyes went wide and her plastic fork fell to the ground. “W-W-What?” “Have you ever had a boyfriend?” Rainbow repeated, firmly. “Sorry for the sudden question, just a thought.” Cocking her head back, a bright blush appeared on Fluttershy’s face. “T-Thought?” Fluttershy tried to feign innocence, to no avail. “What thought is that Rainbow Dash? Please, tell me!” “… You know what?” Rainbow Dash chuckled. “Never mind, forget it. Sorry I asked.” Fluttershy sighed, as if disappointed. She had no idea what Rainbow Dash was implying, yet hoped she’d receive the answer she wanted. She just couldn’t muster the courage to carry this subject, instead she threw away the rest of her food seeing as her fork was on the ground. “So… Ready for more rides?” Rainbow Dash just ate the last bite of her burger, as she threw the bag away. “Sure. Where do you want to go next? Fluttershy put a single finger on her chin, pondering. “Hmm… How about the haunted barn? It’s awful hot out here, and I here it’s cooler in there.” “And darker,” Rainbow grinned, mischievously. “And spookier…” “Hmm… Nice try, but it won’t work. I’ve already conquered my fears and I have the shirt to prove it!” “Curses, foiled again!” Rainbow Dash joked. The two had a good laugh as they headed, strolling toward the Haunted Barn attraction. They were both really anxious with each passing step. They were just halfway to the haunted barn when Fluttershy spoke up. “The answer is ‘no’, by the way.” “What?” “The question from before; I’ve never been in a relationship.” “Never? Huh… Well, I know we haven’t really spoken about it. But if it makes you uncomfortable, I totally understand—” “N-No. It’s okay… I want to talk about it. What do you want to know?” “Well… First off, there’s nothing to be ashamed of,” Rainbow Dash reassured. “The way I see it: The less relationships you have before finding The One, the less heartbreaking you have to go through. Sometimes, there’s nothing wrong with deciding to have a relationship at all.” “Oh? And why is that?” Fluttershy asked. “Because then… The less chance you have of making mistakes… And nobody can ever hurt you.” “I see, well,” Fluttershy giggled, nervously. “If you know me, I’ve never really been the outgoing type…” Fluttershy’s hands gently assumed a position along the top of her chest.” “My c-chest isn’t… Booming as the boys would say. I would never call myself stunning; I can never keep up with certain subjects.” The more Fluttershy tried to talk, the anxious she got. So much she scratched the back of her head, trying to think what else to say. But the more she thought, the more frustrated she got. “W-Why is she hearing this from me now!? This is her day, not mine! But she’s the only one paying attention, everyone else either laughs or just assumes I want attention.” Rainbow Dash gently placed both her hands on Fluttershy’s shoulders, facing her with compassionate eyes. “Don’t ever think like that, Fluttershy. You are the most beautiful girl I’ve ever met. This whole romance thing may not work out for me, but it’s as you said, there are a ton of guys who would love to be around a girl like you… A very nice guy.” “That’s comforting… You pity me, Rainbow Dash. If you ever truly loved me, you’d have told me this long ago.” Rainbow Dash watched her closely, her eyes showing concern. That’s when she notice the tears welling up in Fluttershy’s eyes. “Why is she crying?” Rainbow thought, panicking. “Was it something I said?” Fluttershy, meanwhile, did everything she could to wipe away the tears. But the steamed like there was no tomorrow. But even with her vision blurred, she could see Rainbow Dash so clearly. She could see… She was deeply concerned. “Fluttershy, what’s the matter?” Rainbow Dash asked. <> Shutting herself in one of the bathroom stalls. Fluttershy covered her mouth, desperately trying to muffle her crying. She looked at her dress, which matched her hair color, a dress she saved so much to buy it. Months and weeks poured into buying that dress alone. She could make out the faint echo of the music beyond the stall, but her crying was more than enough to overpower the tone. Even after calming down, she stood from the toilet seat and left the stall to check herself in the mirror. For once in her life, she was beyond devastated. Her hair was entirely curled in a coral-style that took months to prep and her mascara was so messy and stained her face resembled a black waterfall. She wiped the glossy lipstick off her lips, as she stared at herself. After a while, she turned away from her reflection. The dance was ending, and her friends were probably wondering where she ran off to. They wanted nothing more than to see that bright, cheerful smile Fluttershy was known for. She was aware of their affection for her; in fact, her self-confidence had been building up more than she anticipated in years. But none of that could atone for the fact she never felt courage. All that time, all the effort into her evening, gone to waste. All she ever wanted was to spend the whole night with Rainbow Dash, to dance with her, and hold her close in her arms. How does she repay her efforts? Fluttershy arrived at the dance only to find her dancing with him… Soarin’. Some boy who appears handsome, probably much better than Fluttershy, even with all her make-up. “Why couldn’t I be with her?” Fluttershy asked herself. She wanted to explode, even in front of anybody, but she suppressed it… She buried it. All she could do was reach in her purse, pull out a bottle and wipe off the ruined mascara just to clean the reminder of her failure. While it did come off as disingenuous, it appeared authentic enough. The floor had died down, by the time Fluttershy left the bathroom. A light hung over Rainbow Dash and Soarin’, there she could see them… Kissing one another, so passionately. Fluttershy could only watch silently, just as she always does. Watching rub his arms all over firm, soft body and she returns the favor, their lips interlocked for what seemed like an eternity. Eventually, Fluttershy turned away, telling herself to just move on like nothing ever happened… At all. <> “Fluttershy? What’s the matter?” Rainbow Dash asked. “Talk to me; tell me what’s wrong.” Her suppressed anger was breaking lose, Fluttershy could feel the sorrow begging to be unleashed. She knew it was inevitable, even after all those years. She hoped it would last much longer… But realized, she could no longer hold it. “I LOVED YOU, RAINBOW DASH!!!” Fluttershy exploded. “YOU WERE ALL I EVER THOUGHT ABOUT SINCE MIDDLE SCHOOL!!!” Fluttershy’s outburst had Rainbow Dash moving back in surprise. The poor girl did all she could to restrain herself, but it was all too much… It was all for nothing. After all these years, Fluttershy could no longer keep it together. “Y-YOU JUST HAD TO FORCE ME TO SAY IT, DIDN’T YOU?! THE DAY AFTER YOU BREAK-UP, YOU FINALLY GIVE ME A MOMENT’S NOTICE! LIKE YOU ONLY WANT TO TALK TO ME WHEN IT’S CONVIENT FOR YOU!!” To say Rainbow Dash was emotionally punched was a huge understatement. Fluttershy’s outburst made her reel with shock, this was true… But then she started putting the pieces together. The memories… What they witnessed together… It all came full circle. “Fluttershy… You…” Rainbow Dash stuttered, searching for words. “I’m sorry…” Rainbow Dash reached out to hold her hand, but Fluttershy swat it away. “NO! DON’T YOU DARE PITY ME!” She screamed, tears streaming. “YOU THINK ‘I’M SORRY’ WILL EVER MAKE UP FOR WHAT YOU PUT ME THROUGH?! Is that all you can even say? ‘You’re sorry’? You’re sorry I put too much salt in your eggs, when you wanted to cook your own breakfast? You’re sorry that I had the silly idea to have us walk the Haunted House when you knew I hated it?” “And I suppose… I suppose you want to tell me you’re sorry your life is so miserable because Soarin’ couldn’t stand the look on your face if he told you the truth, he breaks up with you through a text… A TEXT!!! But why should I care? I don’t care! You never felt for me like you did for him, why should it matter now? Do whatever you want, cry about it for all I care, just leave me alone!” Fluttershy turned away and sprang for the exit. “Fluttershy!” Rainbow Dash shouted. “Fluttershy, wait!” She ran after her sorrowful friend in a flash. It didn’t take long to catch up with her, grabbing her hand and hugging her tightly preventing her from going anywhere. Fluttershy struggled to pry herself loose, to the point her new t-shirt flew out of her bag, but it was all fruitless. Rainbow Dash had Fluttershy in her grasp, and she was determined not to let go. “Fluttershy… Please…” Rainbow whimpered, pleading. “Just tell me what’s the matter. I’ll listen, I promise.” Fluttershy looked up, seeing the tears in Rainbow’s eyes. Seeing this quelled whatever rage remained within her. “Why did you do this Fluttershy?!” Her thoughts raced. “Why, on her special day of days when it was going so perfectly?! You just couldn’t tell her casually; you just had to freak out! She didn’t deserve to hear how she broke your heart, but no you had to resort to… To…” Eventually, Fluttershy relaxed in Rainbow’s arms, calming down and taking deep breathes as she turned back to Rainbow Dash. “Rainbow Dash…” She sobbed. “I-I’m sorry! This was all my fault! We had one special day together and I ruined it! I-I-I don’t blame y-you if you n-never s-speak to me ever again! I-I-I understand if y-you just ignored me, just like everyone else did in middle school!” “Shh…” Rainbow Dash cooed. “It’s alright, you did nothing wrong. It was never you… It was me… I did this to you…” Despite that, she knew that wasn’t enough. All those years of false happiness and suppressed rage were finally out, all because Rainbow didn’t see it from the start. All Fluttershy could do was cry, despite Rainbow’s efforts to comfort her anyway she could. Even after all that, it would never take away the pain Rainbow Dash indirectly inflicted on her one true friend. There was only one thing she could do now. She held Fluttershy’s head to her cheek, leaned against her ear, and said the three most comforting words hardly anybody could ever say… “I love you…” //-------------------------------------------------------// Enchanted Evening //-------------------------------------------------------// Enchanted Evening Fluttershy gripped her rubber ball with all her strength, as much as she could muster in complete concentration. With a deep breath, she proceeds to squeeze is before winding back to make the pitch. Screaming through the air, the ball smacked itself into the right corner. But this time, it made a dent in the can, knocking it down with the greatest of ease. With one can knocked down, the rest toppled to the floor like dominoes. It was a sight to behold for Fluttershy, she could hardly breathe. After enduring a lifetime of disappointment, Fluttershy finally received her happiness. To name this a perfect achievement would be overstating things; nevertheless, Fluttershy was happy. “Congratulations!” The operator shouts, through grinning teeth. “Pick your prize!” “Yay!” Fluttershy cheered, gleefully. Fluttershy latched onto Rainbow Dash, holding onto her in a loving manner. “Which one do you like, Rainbow Dash?” Rainbow Dash shifts her gaze toward the following three prizes: A small teddy bear on the upper left, a fox in the center, and a turtle just to the right. “Don’t matter to me, Fluttershy,” Rainbow shrugged. “I trust you’ll like whichever you get.” Unfortunately, that answer wouldn’t satisfy Fluttershy, as she playfully pouts. “C’mon, pick your favorite. Please?” “All right, all right,” Rainbow Dash chuckled, eyeing the choices. “The turtle is cute… But not as cute as you.” “Oh, Dash,” Fluttershy conceded, spinning around. The Game Operator grabs the toy, passing it to Fluttershy. Even though Rainbow Dash was annoyed, nothing made her satisfied more than seeing Fluttershy happy. For once in her life, Fluttershy had beaten a game that was almost impossible. It wasn’t much, but it felt empowering. Especially since she now opened up to Rainbow Dash about her feelings, now they could spend more time together. “I’m gonna call you Mr. Turtle,” Fluttershy declared, hugging it. Her new reward, Mr. Turtle, not as soft as Mr. Bunny, but so fulfilling just the same. <> The sun slowly dipped into a dusky glow, as Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy walked hand-in-hand. Fluttershy looked at her phone, which read 6:24 pm just around quitting time. Early outbursts aside, this was perhaps one of Fluttershy’s best days ever. Not just because she spent a full day with Rainbow Dash, but because she finally professed her love to her. But suddenly, the Ferris Wheel was in the midst of her eyesight. It shined against the sunset, a truly breathtaking sight. “Hey, Rainbow Dash?” Rainbow Dash turned to her with a bright and warming smile. But then, Rainbow’s smile faded into concern when she saw tears in Fluttershy’s eyes. “You okay?” “Never great, silly,” Fluttershy said, happily. “It’s just… I’ve never felt happier in my entire life.” Fluttershy meant every word, not of hint of insincerity on her face. In a playful manner, Rainbow Dash grabbed Fluttershy’s hand and spun her around in a swift circle. Fluttershy was enjoying herself… But remembering her plan, she stops and points toward the Ferris Wheel. “Can we ride one more thing today? Pretty please?” Had Rainbow Dash been honest, the last ride she’d ever go on is the Ferris Wheel. There were plenty of amazing rides the park can offer. But then again, even if there were more exciting rides, she would hardly choose them over an easygoing ride on the Ferris Wheel with the most loving, caring girl anybody could ever ask for. Rainbow Dash nodded, grabbed her by the hand and pulls her along. “Whoa! Slow down, Rainbow Dash!” Fluttershy giggled, playfully. The girls wasted no time reaching the last booth on the ride. It slowly rode high enough to see the setting sun in the night sky, rewarding the girls with an admirable view above. For these two friends, it was truly a sight to behold. “Here, Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy whispered, presenting the turtle. “I want you to have Mr. Turtle.” Rainbow Dash felt mixed over her offer. She knew Fluttershy was being nice though, she lacked the comprehension over it. Of course, Rainbow Dash wanted to know why she won that prize, specifically the turtle. In Dash’s mind, that turtle was a sense of accomplishment she earned, so why give it to Rainbow Dash? Her confusion must have given it away for Fluttershy’s eager smile shifted into a more mellow, earnest, gentle grin. “Don’t worry, he’s yours. You earned him; like how you already earned me.” “So… You wouldn’t mind if I changed his name?” Rainbow Dash asked, raising an eyebrow. “Anything you want.” Reluctantly taking the turtle from Fluttershy’s grasp, Rainbow Dash gazed into its black-dotted eyes, then to the loving eyes of her longtime friend. “Fluttershy, you are—” “The bestest friend you ever made?” Fluttershy finished. “I know. Now you have something to remember whenever you wake up at daybreak, like… When we first met.” When Fluttershy mentioned that, as the booth stopped at the very top of the Ferris Wheel, and the evening sun reflected off Fluttershy’s face, Rainbow was speechless before the orange glow bouncing off her. Finally, she couldn’t hold it anymore, leaning in to plant another kiss along Fluttershy’s lips which she returned without hesitation. Emotions stirred everywhere, as Rainbow caressed one hand along Fluttershy’s cheeks, then along the shoulders, and brushed down along her body. The moans were muffled in their embrace until the booth started to go down and they separated. “You’re wrong,” Rainbow Dash chuckled. “You’re not just my best friend; you are the best girl that ever existed in the entire universe. I love you, Fluttershy.” Hearing this, Fluttershy grabbed Rainbow Dash in a huge embrace. She didn’t want to release her; she wished today would last forever. It was ironic all the same, considering the earlier plans she had for her best friend. Perhaps by coincidence, she tried to be as selfish as Soarin’. If her being selfish was bad now, Fluttershy didn’t want to be right. “I’ve always loved you,” Fluttershy reminded. “I can hardly remember a time we were separated. Perhaps Soarin’ is your destined soulmate, but I’m very happy you chose to be with me.” “You say that like you’re worth less than him,” Rainbow Dash whispered. “Last I checked, you didn’t want to leave me. Honestly, I should be ashamed I made you impatient.” “Please, I couldn’t care less about who should be with who anymore. We can play this all day long, but no matter wins, you’re worth move than any other boy I’ve met.” “And you’re the girl that was meant for me, took me a while to figure that out.” Pretty soon, the ride came back down, the couple departed from the Ferris Wheel, and then eventually made their way towards the exit line. Tightly clutching Mr. Turtle, Rainbow Dash moved her right arm around Fluttershy’s waist. “Fluttershy, this has been the best day ever and I love you for planning this for me.” There were many times Fluttershy felt less than nothing, hardly bringing herself to leave her bed. Though those days still exist, they became rather rare. But either way, today was Fluttershy’s moment more than Rainbow’s. True, her earlier plans had gone up in smoke, but karma paid her back in the best possible way. “I love you more,” Fluttershy smirked, proudly. “I just hate that your special day has to end. “Well, that’s life,” Rainbow Dash shrugged. “But today was the most fun I’ve had in my life. You convinced me to come here, not just for the rides, but to finally come clean about your true feelings… And I’m proud of you for that.” Just then, Fluttershy was overwhelmed with an incredibly bright blush. “Y-Yeah. Sorry, for losing it back there.” “Don’t sweat it. If it’s any consolation, now you won’t lose it again.” “Yea…” A cute yawn escaped Fluttershy’s lips, as they pass through the park gates back into the city. Their hands grasped; they slowly walk their way home together happily discussing various topics even planning dates. Along the way, they slowly embraced the face they were officially a couple. It was piling so much upon Fluttershy, she nearly felt the urge to faint. By the time they arrived, the day was nearing its end, and they were just inches away from Fluttershy’s house. The light emitting from the lampposts bounced along their skin. “Well, I guess this wraps up today,” Fluttershy said, slightly disappointed. “Back in this little place we call Earth.” Rainbow Dash merely shook her head, chuckling with a smile toward her girlfriend. “You know? Nothing is ever truly over, so long as we choose to make it that way.” “Huh?” “Well, I was just thinking… My folks are away and won’t be back for the rest of the weekend. I was thinking… I could come in with you, if you’d like.” In an instant, every dirty thought coursed through Fluttershy as her body temperature skyrockets to infinity. “A-Are you t-talking about—” “A sleepover!” Rainbow finished, winking. “A sleepover!” Fluttershy cheered. “Why didn’t I think of that before? But wait…” While Fluttershy’s cheeks reddened with relief, a concern was brought up over Rainbow’s innocent idea. “Aren’t you worried you didn’t bring anything? Like nightwear or toiletries or…” “Don’t worry about it, we’ll improvise. Come on!” The two girls rushed for the house, with Fluttershy practically pulling her inside so quickly the door seemed to close on its own, clicked and sealed. They took their seat onto the couch, beaming with expectation. “So, what do you wanna do first?” Fluttershy inquired. “Well…” Rainbow Dash thought, stroking her chin. “How about a movie?” “That sounds wonderful! What sounds good to you?” “Hmm… How about a little something for Nostalgia’s sake? Do you still have that old DVD?” Fluttershy felt suspicious, but she giggled as it all came together. “Of all the new movies we could enjoy together, you choose something that old. Why?” “The real question is: Why not?” Fluttershy went over and took the aforementioned disc, which conveniently sat at the very top of the DVD rack. After setting the television feature, slid the disc into the DVD player, and skipping all the commercials toward the menu, the movie itself played on command as they gathered on the couch. Rainbow Dash tils her head upwards to face Fluttershy, as they snuggled warmly under the furry blanket. They used to do this during every sleepover, the early years when they knew nothing of responsibility. But today, this was a magical moment. It could be the reason Fluttershy endlessly stared into Rainbow Dash’s eyes, no words just letting her mind wander. Either way, Rainbow Dash didn’t mind as she enjoyed the view. “Hello, Earth to Fluttershy?” Rainbow playfully cooed. One snap of her fingers along Fluttershy’s ear and she jolted back to reality. “Oh! Y-Yeah,” Fluttershy smirked. “Sorry, I wasn’t paying attention.” Rainbow Dash then ran her hand along Fluttershy’s right cheek, the caress of the fingertips startling Fluttershy, as if she were sensing an out-of-this-world experience. “Spacing out, are we?” Rainbow asked, smirking. “Nothing I would call spacing out,” Fluttershy replied. “The view is… Breathtaking…” “You had me at ‘breathtaking’.” “What about the movie?” “Hmm… This is better.” Their lips made contact once again, sparking like the positive and negative energy of a battery filled with passion. Fluttershy lovingly wrapped her arm around her lover’s back, stroking her shoulder blades as Rainbow moaned. Rainbow Dash slowly kissed her way past her friend’s lips, coursing along her neck as Fluttershy began to sigh, her eyes closed enjoying the moment. Soon, Rainbow Dash leaned a little close, tilting down toward her center, one hand slowly tilting one strap of the dress… And fell on her. Fluttershy gasped from the tumble, the blanket covering them up, leaving them looking deep into each other’s eyes. “Rainbow Dash,” Fluttershy whispered. “I-I want you… I want you t-to…” “Yes…?” Rainbow asked, smiling. Rainbow Dash was wondering if Fluttershy was ready for the unthinkable, leaning forward for one more kiss… “I… I-I want you… To dance with me!” It was dumb luck her rational side came back forefront, her blushing face betraying any ideas she was thinking. As embarrassing as this was, Rainbow Dash was aware such things should be ready when they could fully trust each other, and they’ve had all the time to spend together. Besides, if Rainbow was frustrated, she did not show any anger, but she understood. Fluttershy felt relived their time hasn’t come so long as they were very understanding. “That sounds wonderful, Flutters,” Rainbow Dash nodded. “Flutters?” Fluttershy asked, stifling a laugh. “What kind of name is ‘Flutters’?” Rainbow Dash got up, sweeping Fluttershy off the ground. She stole a kiss from here but stopped there. “A special name for the sweetest girl in the whole wide world,” Rainbow answered. Smiling, Fluttershy drew her phone from her pocket. “Would you mind if I choose the song?” “Go ahead,” Rainbow shook her head. “Whatever you want.” Though the bass wasn’t loud as the music, in this case playing their tango, eventually the gentle melodies took over. A romantic pop tune fills the room with warmth, as they slow-dance with one another. To her surprise, Fluttershy had the courage to play that very same song, that echoed in the school bathrooms where she spent the night crying. The last thing she ever wanted was to remember the song; however, she wasn’t sad. In fact, this song filled her with a new joy, as if she had forgotten that depressing memory all together. “Rainbow Dash? Do you know why I chose this song?” As a matter of fact, Rainbow Dash did remember the reason. She frowned, but out of concern more than frustration. Fluttershy was unaware her smile was a tad strained. “This song is familiar,” Rainbow Dash admitted. “I don’t get it.” And it was in that moment Fluttershy realized… Maybe she was rushing things. Here she was thinking she’s ready to let the past go, not realizing she was focusing on herself and possibly not how Rainbow Dash felt. “I-I’m sorry,” Fluttershy lamented, remorsefully. “I-I-I-I was just…” “Shh,” Rainbow Dash cooed, gently. “It’s okay, I’m not mad. I just want to know one thing: Why this song?” Fluttershy knew there was no walking out of this conversation, sooner or later Rainbow Dash was bound to know. She never meant to guilt Rainbow Dash all the same, but it was more than enough to make her emotional state snap like a toothpick. She took a deep breath and looked her friend in the eye. “I wanted to forget this song for so long,” Fluttershy revealed, tearing up. “It used to me so much, I only—Y-You had no idea h-h-h-how m-m-m-much it hurt to see you with him. I-I-I personally asked the D.J. to play that song because I-I-I knew it was your favorite and I wanted to b-be with on t-t-that floor when it played. And now, here we are together, and I just wanted those bad memories to end. I-I didn’t think it would harm you t-t-too. Please don’t be mad at me.” Rainbow Dash moved her hands toward Fluttershy’s face, wiping away the tears as gentle as she could. Now that she sees herself in her girlfriend’s reflection, deep within those eyes, she realized… She was crying too, as if the guilt truly had arrived. “No, please don’t cry!” Fluttershy begged. “Not today of all days; I-I’m so sorry.” But despite the pain, Rainbow Dash just smiled at her. “I’m not crying because I’m hearing this song.” “Huh?” Rainbow Dash brushed a hand across Fluttershy’s back, startling her a bit. “It’s just… I’m so lucky to have you.” Fluttershy sniffed, returning the smile at long last. “S-Same.” As they made another slow turn, Rainbow Dash gently takes the phone from the counter and unlocks it. “How’s about I pick the next song? A song just for us.” “Rainbow Dash, I… I would love it, very much!” Rainbow Dash, the phone in hand, flips through a random playlist of romance songs. It took her a while, but eventually she found a song that was just right for the two. Wrapping her arms around Fluttershy’s waist, they proceed to slow-dance together. All that remained was the graceful melody that filled the house, Fluttershy feeling much better hearing this tune. So much, she found herself dancing with her through the living room, up the stairs, toward her bedroom, which Rainbow opened herself as they danced. Eventually they danced for so long, the girls found themselves tuckered out. “Wow!” Fluttershy sighed, sitting on the bed. “I know, right?” Rainbow asked, taking some deep breaths. “You are just full of surprises.” Fluttershy smiles as she settle down along the bed, as Rainbow Dash sat herself up, takes her cellphone from her short pockets and places it on the bedside desk. It was getting late and they figured they might as well get comfortable for bed. She reaches her arms through her t-shirt, fumbles with the straps along her shoulders, and finally unhooks the garment before loosening it through her shit and casually tossing it aside. Then, she unzips her short-shorts and slides them down, till all she had was her t-shirt and panties with lightning bolts. “Hope you don’t mind, Flutters. Figured since it’s just the two of us—” Rainbow Dash didn’t finish when she suddenly caught something tossed toward her. She looks down and in her grasp is Fluttershy’s dress she wore during their trip to the park… Among several other articles. Rainbow looks up and sees her lover was lying comfortable in bed, the bedsheets covering every portion of her body except her smiling face, the bits of her pink hair covering her eyes. It didn’t take long to see what Fluttershy had done, as Rainbow Dash slowly slides herself into bed till, they were side-to-side. Fluttershy merely smiling towards her friend the whole time. “You know I’m all about going fast,” Rainbow continued. “But if you’re not comfortable with this—” “Shh…” Fluttershy interrupts, putting a finger on her lips. “Take me…” No words were needed as Rainbow Dash nodded, the two leaning their heads for a passionate kiss as they wrapped their arms around each other, and Rainbow caressed around Fluttershy’s exposed canvas. Rainbow then pulls the sheets over them, fumbling and moaning as they made love that would last a lifetime. The sheets shuffled about till Rainbow’s arm emerges, her removed t-shirt in her grip, which she casually lets it fall toward the floor. Then she reaches over to the bed lamp and switches off the lights, leaving the two love birds ‘dancing in the dark’. <> Several hours had passed, as the lovely young couple were lying in bed after a passionate display. They were asleep together, Rainbow nestling comfortably atop of Fluttershy and her soft ‘pillows’. After everything that’s happened, this was the perfect end to a perfect day. As they were dozing, Fluttershy’s face said it all: Pure satisfaction. Moans were loose as a body stirred, that being Rainbow Dash. The young teen lets out a yawn, as she rubs the sleep from her eyes and looks over toward Fluttershy with a warm smile. “Hey, Fluttershy?” Rainbow Dash yawned. “Hmm?” Fluttershy opened one eye. “I’m gonna go downstairs and grab a midnight snack. Got a case of the munchies.” “You’re starting to sound an awful lot like me.” “Coming from you… That’s the best thing I’ve heard.” Rainbow kisses Fluttershy on the neck, as Fluttershy giggles. She watches as Rainbow Dash rose from the bed, her bare back exposed and initially in nothing but the panties which she adjust. She kneels down and picks up her discarded T-Shirt, slipping it back on before leaving the bedroom to head downstairs. While she waited, Fluttershy rolls over and checks her clock. The time read 11:50 pm, they lost count over how long they’ve both made love and went to sleep but that didn’t matter… This night was just perfect. Fluttershy was about to turn and rest her eyes when she hears a vibrating noise from her desk. She turns and notices Rainbow’s cellphone glowing. While still under the sheets, she takes the phone and notices one voice message. She recognized the one name it came from, a glare forming on her face. “Soarin’…” Fluttershy whispered, harshly. //-------------------------------------------------------// The Story Of Our Lives //-------------------------------------------------------// The Story Of Our Lives Soarin’… There was no mistake, that same name with the heart emoji beside it. As soon as Fluttershy saw the message, she went straight to the bathroom and slipped on a nightgown hanging on the door. The nerve of him, Fluttershy felt, trying to reach out to Rainbow Dash after all this time. If Rainbow Dash knew of this, it would ruin the moment they built together. “Why couldn’t you just leave well enough alone?” Fluttershy thought. Still, Fluttershy felt she was obligated to at least answer the message. After all, Soarin’ did reach out to Rainbow Dash’s phone for a reason. Knowing Rainbow Dash was downstairs and not knowing how long she would take, she had to act fast. But this would be quick, she assured herself, if anything he needed a dose of reality over his actions. Fluttershy pushes Soarin’s name, selects his cell phone number, and then she waits… One ring… Two rings… Three rings… Click. “Hello?” It was silent, as Soarin’s voice echoed in the room. At first, Fluttershy had no idea what to do nor planned on how to handle this. She takes a deep breath and finally answered. “Hello Soarin’.” “Oh! Uh… Hi, Fluttershy! How are you?” Soarin’s tone betrayed the hint that he was suddenly nervous, but she wasn’t feeling sympathetic right now. Still, she knew it was rude not to answer the question. “I’m doing fine, thank you for asking,” Fluttershy responds, grimly. “How are you?” “Doing, er… Great! Pretty great!” Soarin’s assured, somewhat strained. “Anyways, is Rainbow Dash there? There’s so much I need to explain and well… I just had to call her back.” “She’s downstairs grabbing a bite in the kitchen. She’ll be back later.” If Fluttershy could predict how Soarin’ is feeling at this moment, he seemed to have realized she knew what happened as a regretful sigh is heard. “She’s told you everything, didn’t she?” Fluttershy did not answer, another sigh followed. “Look Fluttershy, I know you hate me right now. I understand… I know Rainbow Dash is far from happy with me and she should be. I’d be mad at myself too. But as her friend, you need to know I—” “You better have a darn good reason, Soarin’!” Fluttershy interrupts. “Did you really think you can get away with this? Do you have any idea what just put Rainbow through? Do you have any clue that she even loved you?!” “That’s the problem… Initially, I wasn’t really ‘in love’ with her, not at first. Truth is I was just looking to take ‘any’ girl to the dance because I didn’t feel comfortable going by myself. But then I met her and when she asked to dance with her, I realized I had fallen for her. We were happy together for a while, but then it just… Ended. I felt nothing after that.” “You just let her on?” “Yeah… I did. But it wasn’t out of malice, I promise you. Honestly, I thought our dates would bring the magic back, perhaps bringing us closer together. I wanted to be happy, I really wanted to, but even after everything we did together… All of it… I still felt unsatisfied. It was then I concluded that she was just ‘a’ girl, not the girl for me. Rainbow Dash doesn’t know about this… But I started hating myself because I didn’t know what else to do.” As Soarin’ spoke on, his attempts at justifying his actions, Fluttershy kept breathing back and forth. Trying to keep her anger in check, while trying to avoid alerting Rainbow Dash. But as one could imagine, she was just reaching her breaking point. “Y-You are something, Soarin!” Fluttershy muttered. “I mean what do you want me to say? That everything’s just fine, put on a happy face, and smile? Rainbow Dash opened her heart to you! She gave everything you asked of her and this is how you repay her? And to add insult, you blow her off with a text message!” “Fluttershy—” “I’m not finished! I wanted to stick up for you, I truly did. You never seemed the type of guy to run away from responsibility. But after these past few days, you taught me that you never really know someone until—” “I did it for you!!!” Soarin’ suddenly shouted. Fluttershy’s rant stopped right in its tracks, her eyes widen at those five words. “You… Did… What?” Fluttershy could hear Soarin’ sharply inhale, holding his breath before breathing out to calm himself. “I’m sorry, Fluttershy. I shouldn’t have yelled… But I really did have a good reason and it was never to break her heart. It’s because of you… You were my only way out.” Fluttershy didn’t quite understand where Soarin’ was going nor could grasp the meaning of this riddle. “What do you mean by that?” At first, all Fluttershy could hear was silence on the other end. Her anger suddenly tones into mere confusion, if not concern. “Soarin’? Are you still there?” Fluttershy heard another deep breath on the other line. “Yeah, I’m still here…” Soarin’ confirmed. “Do you really want to know?” “Yes… Please explain,” Fluttershy urged. “Just tell me the truth.” “It’s like this…” Soarin’ exhaled. “One of my pals told me everything about… The incident. It took a lot of prodding before they spat it out.” “E-Everything?” “Everything… Down to the last detail. I was told how pitiful you were, when my friend found you crying in the bathroom stalls. Fluttershy, why didn't you say something? I never meant to steal her from you; I never knew why you were so inseparable with Rainbow Dash. I will admit… I always knew you two were different from all the other girls.” All Fluttershy could do is sigh, any trace of anger for Soarin’ dwindled little by little. “I’m sorry, Soarin’… I didn’t mean to put you on the spot. I admit I get a little carried away, especially for those I care about.” “Perhaps, but my mistakes are still inexcusable. Keeping her around like this was the biggest mistake I’ve ever made. I should have told you both sooner and to your face… Like a man.” “Thank you, Soarin’,” She mumbled, forgivingly. “Thank for giving me this chance to hear you out.” “You deserve more than that, Fluttershy,” Soarin’ confessed. “Thank you for understanding.” A short period of silence passed as both parties were waiting for one another to say something, eventually it got rather awkward. “So… Are we cool?” Soarin’ asked, breaking the silence. “Huh? Oh! Oh, yes! Of course!” “… You’re not saying that to me feel better, right?” Fluttershy absentmindedly twirled a piece of her hair with one finger. Being mean was not in her nature, lying in general did more harm than good. Especially after that outburst toward Rainbow Dash earlier, she was not doing that again. “Soarin, if you must know,” Fluttershy began, taking a deep breath. “You broke Rainbow Dash’s heart with that message; I can never let you forget that. I will always be upset with you, disappointed even. But… I understand why you did it. I don’t agree with it, but I do understand.” “That’s all I can ask for, thanks,” Soarin’ said. “So, what’s your game plan? Speaking from experience: Don’t let this chance slip by… Or, you might regret it for the rest of your life.” “Well, actually,” Fluttershy giggled, nervously. “We kinda-sorta already got together just now.” “… Seriously?!” “Yea… Sorry.” More silence followed, as if Soarin’ was just breathing it in. Fluttershy merely presumed the poor guy needed more time to think. She couldn’t very well fault him for that, he did used to date Rainbow Dash after all. “Well… I’m glad to hear it,” Soarin’ finally said. “You deserve her, as she deserves you. Especially since you girls have known each other… Well, I don’t even know how long.” “That means a lot hearing that from you,” Fluttershy remarked, truthfully. “Yeah… Just never expected you to snatch her up so quickly. But I’m still happy for you, both of you.” Fluttershy heard a yawn on the other end, she assumed Soarin’ was just getting tired. “Anyways, it’s getting late and I should be going,” Soarin’ yawned. “If you two wanna hang out sometime, does next week work?” “I can always ask her and let you know,” Fluttershy replied. “Thanks… Oh, and Fluttershy?” “Yeah?” “Look… I know I’ve done a lot to lose Rainbow Dash’s trust and I know it’ll probably take a long time before we actually speak again. But, even so, I wasn’t lying when I said I still want to be her friend. She’s a good person, with a very good heart, and that’s what I’ve always liked about her. Can you… Can you find it in your heart to forgive a foolish guy like me? Please?” “Of course, Soarin’ and she’ll forgive you too. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, not in a week or month or even years… But she’ll forgive you, just give her some time. Good night.” “Good night.” Soarin’ hung up first, eventually Fluttershy did the same. In all honesty, Fluttershy was shocked to hear him end the conversation so genuinely. Perhaps Soarin’ truly was trying to atone for his mistake or maybe, he didn’t want to ruin Fluttershy’s night. Either way, her resentment for Soarin’ vanished without a trace. Today marked a very special day, not just for Fluttershy but for Rainbow Dash. In fact, just calling it a special day would be underselling yet even so Fluttershy could think of no other word even if she tried. Not that she would attempt to think for much longer. But this time, another feeling stirred within her. One that lightened her mood like a firecracker: She finally confessed to Rainbow Dash and despite all the tension she was pleased to know Rainbow felt the same. She enjoyed every second of it, everything she ever needed. Giggling, she jumped on her bed, rolling around the sheets in excitement. It was then she noticed Mr. Turtle, lying on the pillow, and seemingly staring right at her. It filled her with a sense of pride looking at it, only to discover something she couldn’t solve for a long time. Grabbing Mr. Turtle, she placed him on her lap along with Mr. Bunny. It may be silly since she practically gave the turtle to Rainbow Dash but seeing the two stuffed animals together was symbolism that the two could finally be together. Before she could dwell any further, she heard footsteps climbing up to her room and quickly pulled the sheets over her. Rainbow Dash soon entered the room, two cups of chocolate pudding in each hand. “Though I’d bring something sweet for the sweetest girl in the world,” Rainbow smiled. Rainbow walked over to Fluttershy, embracing her, almost spilling the pudding. But neither one minded. “I love you so much, Rainbow,” Fluttershy cooed. “You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” “You’re the light of my life, Fluttershy,” Rainbow Dash confess. “And I mean it every single day.” The duo leaned in for a kiss, but before they could go any further, Fluttershy’s eyes caught the digital clock from Rainbow Dash’s reflection in her eyes. It was morning now; a new day had only just begun. It caught her by surprise, such a disappointing convenience. “Aww… How can today already be over?” Fluttershy whined. “I was really having fun.” Rainbow Dash, however, could care less. She gently moved her hand across Fluttershy’s face, staring deep in those beautiful, deep aqua eyes. Like staring into an ocean sparkling under the sunrise. “It’s okay, Fluttershy; I had a wonderful time.” “I know… I just wish every day of your life is as great as this one.” Rainbow pondered on that thought for a moment, as her smile returned. “What if I were to say that you could?” Fluttershy giggled, though the question confused her. “Rainbow, we can’t go to the park every single day…” “No… But it’s not what made today so special.” It finally clicked. It was never about the park; it was all about her. Fluttershy felt stupid for not getting it, spending all her time on making it Rainbow’s day and not hers. A tornado of emotions surrounded her, filling her with the desire to dance with her new girlfriend again. Even when she felt the urge to cry, her smile remained. “So…” Rainbow continued, studying Fluttershy. “Think we can finish where we left off?” “I love you, Rainbow Dash!” Fluttershy cried, smiling. “I love you—MMPH!” Rainbow never finished the sentence when she was tackled on the bed. Fluttershy held her down, kissing her so passionately, tasting the chocolate still on her love’s lips. They kept making out for what felt like an eternity, as the moans of pleasure and compassion echoed in the room. One day may have ended, but their passion would remain for as long as they wanted it too. Calling yesterday the most special of days would be an understatement. What they felt that day was too much to describe this newfound love which they vowed to cherish for a lifetime. As they made love, already plans were forming in Rainbow’s head on where she wanted to go. Plans for another great day, for weeks to come… For years… //-------------------------------------------------------// First Times, The Best of Times //-------------------------------------------------------// First Times, The Best of Times Sitting along a bench, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy spent a whole hour in awkward silence. After that moment to take a breather, enough time to assess their thoughts, Rainbow Dash helped her friend up and walked beside her. Fluttershy kept close but kept her head down the whole time. Eventually, they stop at an ice cream stand, Rainbow Dash ordering some ice cream and handed one to Fluttershy. “Feeling better?” Rainbow Dash, asked. While Fluttershy did appreciate the ice cream cone, she remained silent except for one sound: “Hmm…” The duo walked over to their picnic, enjoying their soft serve under the sun’s bask. Rainbow Dash was close to finished, but Fluttershy could hardly bring herself to eat her treat. It pained Rainbow Dash as she watched it melt under the sun. She knew Fluttershy had a deep love for ice cream and it was during this moment Rainbow Dash realized: She really messed up. If only she wasn’t so blind to how much Fluttershy loved her. Fluttershy gazed at the ground in a forlorn manner, feeling Rainbow Dash’s gaze toward her. But she didn’t reward it by sharing the look. All she could inside was shame, embarrassment, and selfishness. The storm inside her mind brewed childhood memories, though she already dried away the tears long ago. On the contrary, Rainbow Dash knew what she was thinking. They’ve known each other since kindergarten, right from the get-go. But this was the second time Rainbow Dash underestimated her. Whenever Fluttershy was picked on, Dash would at least pick up on the situation and rush to her aid. But now she sees she shattered her friend’s heart, a thousand times over. “Why couldn’t I love who deserved it?” Rainbow Dash asked, to herself. "Why do I keep pretending to be someone I'm not?" No matter how many times she repeated the question in her mind, she never found the answer nor came close to understanding it. Rainbow Dash stood up from her side of the seat and sat next to Fluttershy. Moving close to her, the former wraps an arm around the latter, sitting in awkward silence. While Fluttershy held no objection towards the gesture, she didn’t acknowledge Rainbow Dash. “You know I’m not angry, right?” Rainbow Dash asked. “You should know you did nothing wrong? And I’m staying with you?” Though Fluttershy remained silent, she did shift her eyes a bit at least showing she heard her. “…Y-Yea…” Fluttershy finally spoke. “Fluttershy,” Rainbow Dash swallowed. “I know it’s not easy; you have every right to hate me. But please… Please look at me.” Reluctantly obliging her request, Fluttershy turned to Rainbow Dash with a dejected frown. The same one Fluttershy carried whenever she was bullied. Rainbow Dash would do anything to see her true smile again. Fluttershy did nothing but look into Rainbow Dash’s eyes. Every minute she took to find an answer, it only harkened back to her early outburst. The closest thing a monster can get to hurting the ones they love. She saw the mark she gave Rainbow Dash, cringing the more she looked. Fluttershy turned the other way, knowing her friend deserved better. There was no other person in the world as selfish as her, even by her own standards. “How could she ever forgive me…?” <> The early afternoon soon hit the park. Though the t-shirt was a tad dirty, it was safely tucked in the bag. Fluttershy had no need for it, though. It only served as a reminder of her cowardice. Had Fluttershy been honest from the very beginning, none of this would come to pass. “I-I’m sorry,” Fluttershy whimpered again. “I’m so… So sorry…” Rainbow Dash moved closer, hugging Fluttershy in the tightest embrace she could muster, rocking her as comfortably as she could, a move that slightly worked. “Shh… It’s alright. It’s not your fault—” “But it’s true,” Fluttershy whimpered, with a high-pitched voice. “Today was your day; I took that away from you.” Gently holding her chin up, Rainbow Dash held Fluttershy’s face so she could see her. To look softly into those melancholy eyes. Fluttershy did all she could to avert those eyes, but she couldn’t turn away from her friend. “I’m sorry,” She meekly whispered. “For being such a failure…” SMACK! Rainbow Dash gave Fluttershy a slight peck on the lips, the latter’s eyes widen in surprise. Her mouth gaped, as pure joy filled her heart. What little sadness there was left, her emotions felt like the sun breaking through a cloudy veil and all the rain clouds dissipate. Her whole life built up to this one moment, never giving a thought it would ever occur. And yet, it did happen… Unlike anything Fluttershy ever experienced till today. It filled her with the most wonderful joy she desired to last. “I am, too,” Rainbow Dash whispered. “I was foolish to ignore your feelings; I’m the one who was terrible towards you.” “N-No! It’s not your fault, Rainbow Dash!” Fluttershy screamed, in her thoughts. “Today is your day! This is a joyous occasion!” Fluttershy did her best to convey this message, but something different came out entirely. “Don’t beat yourself up, Rainbow Dash!” She ordered, in a dominant voice. “You helped me so much… And I love you for it. Just like… Back then… <> “Fluttershy! Could you come here?” Three years old and barely moving, Fluttershy walked into the room in her usual shy manner, only to stand face-to-face with a strange woman at the front door. This was the first time she ever met a grown-up who wasn’t her parents and even with that friendly smile, Fluttershy bashfully hid in the safety of her mother’s embrace. “No need to be scared, Fluttershy,” Her mother cooed, holding her hand. “This is our new neighbor. Would you please say ‘hi’?” Fluttershy barely looked at the stranger, slowly walking forward. “It’s okay,” The woman assured. “I won’t bite.” The little girl reached her hand out, touching her shin out of innocent curiosity. She lifts her head up, seeing that the woman was laughing with the brightest smile imaginable. “H-Hi…” Fluttershy spoke, quietly. “It’s nice to meet you, Fluttershy,” The woman responded, patting her little head. The woman then reached into her coat pocket, revealing a small chocolate bar. “Would you like some?” Fluttershy slowly nodded, gently taking the candy bar. She carefully unwraps the corner of the tinfoil and takes a tiny bite of the chocolate. It was smooth, rich, and creamy, making her taste buds jump. “T-Thank you,” Fluttershy smiled. “You’re welcome,” The woman giggled. The woman soon turned toward the yard, as the sun glared before her. “Rainbow Dash! You can come out now!” On command, a little toddler approached with a bright smile. She was as small as Fluttershy, who never met anyone like her. The girl before her was dressed in a thunderbolt t-shirt with a pair of blue overalls. “Hewwo!” The little toddler exclaimed, reaching out. “I’m Rainbow Dush!” But even with the little girl’s friendly gesture, Fluttershy was terrified. She kept close to her mother, hiding behind her leg. Rainbow Dash was confused, for every step she took Fluttershy stepped further away. Fluttershy’s mother only gave Rainbow Dash a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry, she’s just a teensy bit shy,” Fluttershy’s mother said, turning to her daughter. “And don’t you worry, sweetie. Rainbow Dash is a friend; she just wants to play with you.” Fluttershy glanced at her mother, then Rainbow Dash, back-and-forth multiple times. Walking cautiously forward, with her mother’s encouragement, Fluttershy stood face-to-face with Rainbow Dash. Though she still kept her head down, while twirling her fingers anxiously. “H-h-hi,” She squeaked. “I’m F-Fluttershy. Are y-you really a-a fweind?” “Yeah!” Rainbow Dash shouted, hugging her tightly. “We are best fweinds now, Fluttershy!” The mothers happily laughed, while their daughters became well-acquainted with one another. “Y-Yay!” Fluttershy replied, happily. “L-Let’s pway together!” <> “Ow!” Immediately, Rainbow Dash came to a screeching halt. Some years later, while they were playing tag one day, Fluttershy was it as Rainbow Dash ran.. But as she tried to catch her friend, Fluttershy fell down and scraped her knee along the pavement of the sidewalk. Rainbow Dash turned and rushed to her, quietly wincing while her friend’s knee bled. Tears swelled in her eyes, as she sucked the air through her teeth and cradled her knee while sitting down. “Owwwwww!” “Fluttershy!” Bending down, Rainbow Dash examined her friend’s scraped knee. It wasn’t major or serious, but it would require a few days to heal. Fluttershy did all she could to wipe away her tears, but she the crying never stopped. It was one trait she loathed about herself, wishing to do something to make it end but it never came to pass. “Fluttershy, are you okay?” Rainbow Dash asked. Fluttershy didn’t speak, she just shook her head with her eyes closed. She thought Rainbow Dash would belittle her for crying, yet no mockery came. Instead, Rainbow Dash looked at her as if trying to figure out what to do for her. It was her sympathy that took Fluttershy by surprise. She expected her friend to insult her, tell her to suck it up, or leave altogether. But not Rainbow Dash, she was genuinely concerned for her. Rainbow Dash carried her back to the house, which was slow due to Fluttershy’s injury. In the bathroom, Fluttershy sat on the toilet seat while Rainbow Dash checked the medicine cabinet. She took out a clean washcloth, lathered it in warm water, and gently scrubbed the spot where the scrape was. “Ow!” Fluttershy cried. “Shh… Just give me a second,” Rainbow Dash muttered. She scrubbed away the blood, cleaning the wound without risking infection. Then she finished it off with a band-aid along the scrape, just big enough to cover the whole wound. “There,” Rainbow Dash sighed, placing a hand on Fluttershy’s shoulder. “All better?” After she finished sniffing, Fluttershy stopped crying and felt herself lit up. Which led to hugging Rainbow Dash so tightly, her eyes nearly popped out “T-Thank you, Rainbow Dash!” Fluttershy giggled. “You’re the best friend in the whole world!” “F-Fluttershy!” Rainbow stammered, gasping. “You-re c-c-c-crushing my spine!” But Fluttershy still held on for about a minute or so before she eventually released, to Rainbow Dash’s relief. She took a few deep breathes, grateful her friend didn’t break any bones. The girl can be pretty strong without realizing it. “You are the greatest friend I could ever have,” Fluttershy smiled. “Yeah, maybe,” Rainbow Dash sighed. “Say, how about we watch some T.V. or something? Don’t want my best friend getting hurt again, do we?” “W-We can play some more,” Fluttershy argued. “I promise to be extra special careful next time." Rainbow Dash thought about it and she hated to disappoint Fluttershy. But considering Fluttershy would be ‘it’ the entire time and given she’s slow enough even without injury, there’d be no satisfaction if it were just Rainbow Dash having fun. Reluctantly, she shook her head. “Nah, I’m pretty beat anyway. How’s about we grab some snacks? I’ll even let you pick.: “Oh… Okay!” Fluttershy nodded. They walked down to the kitchen, Rainbow Dash in the lead and Fluttershy following behind. Briefly, Fluttershy slowly moved her hand towards Rainbow Dash’s, all the while trying to keep calm around her friend. She had felt weird around her friend for who knows how long. It was a good sort of weird, but nothing changed Fluttershy’s demeanor about her feelings toward her best friend. She questioned these feelings all the same, but never found an answer… And she would continue to wonder for years to come. <> “Fluttershy?” Rainbow Dash shook her shoulder. “Fluttershy? You okay?” Immediately, Fluttershy shifted away from her childhood memories, regaining her will to smile. But to say she was happy is a severe understatement; her face lit with such joy her cheeks almost touched her eyes. “I-I’m fine, Rainbow Dash!” Fluttershy nodded. “Y… You’re not doing all this to cheer me up… Are you?” Instead of uttering a word, Rainbow Dash responds with another kiss. Only this time, this was a more passionate kiss, a deep one. Fluttershy was surprised, but she found solace. Succumbing to her friend’s embrace, her arms wrapped around her, they silently held onto each other. Blissfully rocking back-and-forth, Fluttershy passionately moaned as she caressed Rainbow Dash’s tongue with her own. True, the aftertaste of Rainbow’s burger remained, but Fluttershy didn’t care. Eventually, their lips parted, and Rainbow Dash’s smile was bigger than even Fluttershy’s. “W-Wow!” The only word Fluttershy could utter, while she giggled like a schoolgirl. “That was… Paradise.” “Pretty good for your first time, right?” Rainbow Dash chuckled. “Well, I’ve seen it and… Well…” Fluttershy joked. “Hey, Fluttershy?” Fluttershy stopped for a moment, as Rainbow Dash stared forlornly into the ground, her fingers in her pants pockets. Then she slowly looks up. “I owe you a really big apology, for going with Soarin’, I mean… I can’t imagine what you went through. For years, I’ve been over your place and come to you for advice, never realizing you were suffering more than me. I wish I knew about it sooner…” “O-Oh, let’s just forget about it!” Fluttershy exclaimed, her smile softens. “All I ever want is to see you smile, I know it wasn’t your fault what happened. I should have told you in the first place.” As they talked, Fluttershy gazed at the night sky, as the stars began to appear. “The important thing is we have no secrets anymore. Right?” Rainbow Dash gripped Fluttershy’s hand even tighter, but not to the point it could break. “No more secrets, I promise,” Rainbow Dash assured. “I love you, Fluttershy. I mean it. I was a moron not to realize these feelings sooner.” “That makes two of us,” Fluttershy giggled. “Two outcasts against the world.” “So true… So, should I be happy he’s single now?” “Would you hate my guts if I said yes?” At that moment, Rainbow Dash fell over laughing, pulling Fluttershy along and turning it into a loving embrace. If there was one thing about Fluttershy, she had a way of being funny without trying. “Come on, there’s still some rides we didn’t go on. And we still have the whole afternoon together, right?” Fluttershy nodded. For the rest of the afternoon, that’s exactly what they did. Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash… Together…
