Finally, at long last, a break. Adagio Dazzle tossed her hair and straightened out her posture, stretching and rolling her shoulders until all the stiffness and tension melted away. As much as possible, that was, without a masseuse. She would have to make an appointment once she was back in Canterlot. Or, better yet, she could text Sonata and have her book the appointment in her stead. They were overdue for a spa day, anyway.
“Honestly,” she grumbled to herself, readjusting the strap of her rucksack on her shoulder as she fished around for the key-card to her room, “if I get a stiff neck I’m suing that degenerate school. Stuffing ladies into a mini-van for two hours… ugh,” she rolled her eyes inwardly as she retrieved the small sheet of plastic and began inspecting the numbered doors on either side of the long hallway.
Adagio often enjoyed away games; not that she would openly admit that, of course; but there was always a rush of excitement. She felt like a little kid: staying up the night before to lay out her uniform, carefully selecting outfits to wear for the team’s inevitable victory dinner— especially now that she was team captain. Their win was almost guaranteed. That was, of course, if she didn’t wake up with a crick in her neck. She grumbled again, furrowing her brows.
“Twelve… Fourteen… Ah- fifteen,” she smiled, “here we are.” Adagio let out a breath and swiped her card through the reader before pushing it open. She didn’t mind having a room to herself away from her team. To be completely honest, she preferred it. There had always been something about low-life gossip that made her skin crawl, and so the last thing she wanted to do was associate herself with— well— low-lives.
She allowed the door to click behind her and wandered into the room, taking it all in. She dropped her bag at the foot of the bed closest to her and turned to look herself over in the full-length mirror. She toyed with her hair, twirling the locks by the side of her face around her fingers to adjust the curl. Once she was pleased with what she saw, she shot her reflection a wink and blew herself a kiss.
Just as she straightened herself out, the door clicked to her right. In stepped a much shorter girl, huffing and heaving a large duffel bag, practically stumbling over the thing. She did her best to maneuver herself in order to hold the door open with her foot, just long enough to swing the bag into the room, allowing the momentum to carry it just shy of where Adagio stood. Adagio blinked, stroking her thumb against her finger with an arched brow.
The other girl was bent over, one hand currently pressing against her knee to keep herself up-right. With the other, she wiped the sweat that had gathered at her brows and allowed herself to let out another deep huff of breath.
“Ahem,” Adagio cleared her throat, immediately capturing her attention, “may I help you?”
“Oh!” She piped up, stepping into the room as she came to full height finally. “No, no! I’m good. The bag’s just a little heavy is all.”
Adagio clicked her tongue and narrowed her eyes. “That isn’t what I meant.”
Seemingly unphased, the girl continued to close the distance between them, once again collecting the straps to heave her bag into the air. Adagio could swear her face was turning purple.
“Oh for the love of…” She tutted, practically snatching the bag from her to carry it over to the room’s other bed and dropping it onto the mattress. “There. Try to pack lighter next time.”
The shorter girl found herself flustered, scratching at her warmed cheek as she let out a nervous chuckle. “S-sorry. Thank you, though! I wasn’t expecting-...” she trailed off as Adagio stepped back in front of the mirror to adjust her hair once more. “I, uhm. I wasn’t expecting to be sharing a room with anybody. I’m Sugar Belle! It’s nice to meet you.”
She extended her hand towards Adagio who only glanced at it from the corner of her eye before standing up straight once again. She turned on her heel to stand at the side of her bed, collecting her own bag as she went, refusing to so much as spare a glance in the other girl’s direction. “I know who you are. Sugar Belle: Wing Attack. Captain of the West High Knights girl’s netball team,” only then did she raise her eyes to meet Sugar Belle’s own, “your reputation precedes you.”
“O-oh!” She stuttered, side-stepping towards her side of the room, eyeing the other girl carefully. “I’m surprised you actually knew my name.”
“Please, I’m not some amateur just because I’m on a high school netball team.” Adagio looked up from her bag as she fished out a fresh shirt. “I always make sure to research my enemies.” As a tense pause hung in the air, Adagio took it as an opportunity to release her hair from her high ponytail, shaking her head as her curls fell loose and running her fingers over her scalp. She let out a pleasured sigh and tucked her scrunchie into the side pocket of her bag before reaching down to pull her shirt up and over her head.
Sugar Belle let out an indignant gasp, averting her eyes violently and cupping a hand against the side of her face. “You, uhm. You’re very forward.”
Adagio arched a brow, a teasing grin tugging at the corners of her mouth as she practically stared the flustered girl down. She gave a shrug, not that the other teen would see, and folded her shirt away. “I have to get changed in front of my team and cheer squad before practice. You learn to get over your nerves.”
“Y-you’re a cheerleader?”
“Mh,” Adagio nodded as Sugar Belle peeked at her from between parted fingers. She rifled through her bag for a pair of clean underwear and tucked it against her chest along with her other fresh clothes. “Head cheerleader, of the Canterlot High Sirens.”
Sugar Belle blinked and hesitantly dropped her hands to trace circles over the fabric of her bedspread before kneeling onto the mattress. “Wow… That’s actually really impressive.”
“Hm?”
“Well, I mean, it must be hard to captain two separate teams. Not to mention the physical prowess that takes. I know I get tuckered out after a few practice matches.” The smaller girl chuckled, only to clear her through and rub the back of her head bashfully when Adagio didn’t return her sense of humor. “So, uhm. What’re your plans?”
Adagio combed through her hair with her fingers once more before she stepped toward the hotel room’s much smaller bathroom. “My team and I were cooped up in a minivan for hours. I stink and my shoulders are killing me, so I was going to have a shower.” She paused for a moment to throw a sly smirk in the other girl’s direction, “feel free to join me, if you’d like.”
When the other girl’s face turned a dark shade of red, and Adagio could see the mental gymnastics flipping through Sugar Belle’s brain as she tried to find any kind of response, the taller girl let out an amused laugh. “It was a joke cutie. Try not to hurt yourself.” With a wink, she ducked into the bathroom and closed the door behind her.
She let out a steep breath and rested her back against the chilled wooden door. Competition was about mind games just as much as it was about physically outsmarting your opponent. This was an act of intimidation: something Adagio knew all too well about. She pressed a calming hand to her chest and dumped her clothes onto the lid of the toilet as she slipped out of her bra and stepped out of her skirt as it fell to the floor around her ankles. She let out a low moan of delight as she stretched her arms upwards, closing her eyes as her joints popped and relaxed.
She rolled her shoulders and turned on the water, dipping her hand under the shower head to test the temperature. She was aiming for cold, but not freezing. Once she was satisfied she turned back to the counter top to slip off her bracelets and watched in the mirror, the way her collar bones moved under her skin as she reached up to unfasten the clip of her necklace. She tucked a curl behind her ear and smiled.
Adagio hummed to herself as she let the cold water run over her head and shoulders, allowing her shivering frame to adjust to the water before she moved on to washing herself. As she lathered soap onto her hands she began thinking of strategies for tomorrow's game; fake outs and who would be the best to pass to under pressure. Which of her teammates was the most skilled at adapting to new strategies and who she could rely on to keep their head on straight. After she had already washed the shampoo out of her hair, she began thinking about the opposite team and what their strategies may be. But, she scoffed to herself, she supposed she could find that out for herself. After all, their captain was just next door.
Once she was clean, Adagio turned off the shower and wrapped a towel around her body before going to work on her hair with another. She always hated the aftermath of washing her hair. It was thick and curly and misbehaved no matter what kind of hair-care or de-tangling serum she tried. She could only grunt in frustration and fish around the cabinets for a blow-dryer. “Hm…” her lips drew into a line, brows knitting in frustration, “honestly? First they fudge the booking and don’t even think to put a hair-dryer… Who runs this place?”
She dried herself off quickly and slipped into her fresh clothes, only buttoning up her blouse half-way so as to still see the plain, white vest underneath. She brought her damp hair over her shoulder and stepped back into the hotel room with a sigh. If she couldn’t dry her hair properly, she could at least brush it out.
Her narrowed eyes rose from the floor to glance up at Sugar Belle, who was now sitting on her own bed and flipping through her phone. “Oh… you’re still here?” Adagio tucked her skirt and other dirty clothes away into her bag, alongside her shirt, and sifted through it for her brush. Sugar Belle pulled a single earbud from her ear and adjusted her position on her mattress so that she was sitting up straight, back against her propped-up pillows.
“Ah- uhm. You’re quick,” she chuckled lightly. Adagio queried a brow. Sugar Belle didn’t elaborate.
“I would have thought you’d be out gallivanting with your teammates before tomorrow. Not in the mood?”
“Oh- yeah, no.” Sugar Belle’s shoulders slumped a bit and she dropped her phone beside her to hug her thighs, “everyone was pretty tired, so. They were heading to bed the last I checked.”
“I see.” Adagio paused, tightening the grip on her brush handle before dragging it through her messy locks. “Probably better that way anyway, am I right?” She scoffed, “being around my teammates too long drives me crazy.”
“W-what do you mean?”
“Well, I might be their captain but that certainly doesn’t make me their friend.” Adagio stated, pointing her brush at the other girl before going back to working through her hair. She resigned to split it into sections and work layers at a time, shifting the tamer, drier layers to the other shoulder. “Practice is one thing but associating with them? Please.” She scoffed.
Sugar Belle fidgeted and tucked her legs into a basket, shifting to face Adagio now. She looked at her with narrowed eyes and gave a small, almost inquisitive, frown. “You really think like that? That’s a little harsh, don’t you think?”
Adagio shrugged. “And whoever said I was nice?”
Sugar Belle opened her mouth to speak but promptly closed it again to wring her hands nervously. “I just thought, since you were captain that-”
“I’m captain because I have talent; not because of some popularity contest.” Adagio tossed her hair and collected her towel to run it over the dripping ends, “please don’t tell me that’s how your team decides things. That would be disappointing.”
“Well- of course not-” Sugar Belle sputtered, brows narrowing at the other girl. Adagio grinned. “I just thought that a captain should be someone who inspires their team and rallies them- you know- who builds up the team’s morale; not someone who thinks they’re better than them.”
The taller girl raised her brows and puckered her lips for a moment before setting her brush down on her night stand. “Whoever said that? All I said was that being on a team with them didn’t automatically make us friends. It’s a tad unfair to put words in my mouth, no?”
“I-” Sugar Belle began, but all words died on her tongue when she tried to think of a coherent response. She deflated, defeated, and Adagio smirked once again.
She grabbed the straps of her bag and dropped it onto the floor at the foot of her bed, before sitting down on her mattress properly for the first time. The springs creaked under her weight. She grimaced and clicked her tongue. “Honestly, if you weren’t so fun to tease I would have already been on my way to complain to the management about the state of this place.”
Sugar Belle let out a puff of breath to blow a ringlet out of her face. “So… what’s it like being a cheerleader?”
“Oh, I wasn’t aware we were playing twenty questions.” Sugar Belle’s lips pursed into a line. Adagio shook her head and rolled her eyes. “It’s fun. Beyond the looks and expectation for perfection, that is. There’s a lot of pressure to look a certain way and to act a certain way, but past all of the superficial bullshit, it’s fun.”
The shorter girl smiled and appeared to brighten up. Adagio felt herself blush a little; she was cute, after all— that she couldn’t deny. “So you aren’t superficial. See? I knew you were nice.”
Adagio scoffed and shifted to imitate the other girl, tucking her own legs into a basket and turned to face her properly. “Is that so? You think you have me all figured out, hm?”
“Maybe,” she giggled. “I think I’d like to get to know you.”
Adagio paused briefly and read over the situation in her mind: the pros and cons of letting this… whatever it was, to continue. “Alright. Ask away.”
The goal was simple enough. Either mess with the other girl to the point where she felt uncomfortable enough to be off her game tomorrow, or to make her feel bad enough to throw the game altogether.
“What made you want to join the netball team if you were already a cheerleader? Do you just really like sports?”
Adagio was confident enough in her acting ability that she could definitely fake a family tragedy.
“Well,” Adagio sighed, “I was diagnosed with having anger issues in freshman year and so the guidance counsellor advised me to find some kind of extracurricular to help me vent out that anger.” She flexed her fingers and adjusted her nails, “but, after sending both my taekwondo and kickboxing instructors to the ER, I was told I had to take up a ‘team sport’ if I wanted to keep my position on the squad.”
Violence. Yes, violence was good. Intimidation was a key element to winning.
Sugar Belle’s brows narrowed for a moment before she cleared her throat. “Oh. Well, uhm. I-I see.” She tugged on the collar of her shirt, “So… Do you, uhm, have a boyfriend? I mean- you always see cheerleaders in the movies dating the quarterback, and I always thought that was really cliche- but I’ve never actually meta cheerleader, so. Well, I mean, had a proper conversation with one.” She shrugged. “The girls at my school aren’t exactly the most… approachable.” She sucked a breath in between her teeth.
Well. It seemed she was playing offence. Adagio could deal with that. Oh, yes; she could deal with that.
She shook her head and leaned back on her hands, straightening out her legs so that they came over the edge of her bed. “No. The boys at CHS are neanderthals.” She counted off on her fingers, “The pretty ones are either gay or stupid, the sort-of attractive ones are misogynists, and the ugly ones are, well… ugly.” Adagio shrugged, “Plus I’m a lesbian, so.”
Sugar Belle visibly tensed, blinking her eyes wide as her mouth fell open. “O-oh! Uhm,” she swallowed and scratched at the back of her head, dropping her eyes to avoid Adagio’s watchful stare. The taller girl smirked, amused just to watch Sugar Belle squirm. “Sorry for just assuming. Do you have a girlfriend, then?”
“I don’t, no.” Adagio pulled herself forward to sit upright and shrugged. “But I’m not looking for one either,” she raised her eyes and flashed a wicked grin across the room, “so don’t get any ideas, cutie.” Adagio punctuated the taunt with a wink. She watched as Sugar Belle swallowed down her words and assumed her narrowed features was a give away, of her trying to knit together some kind of witty response or a polite, well-intended joke.
“So how do you know then? I mean- if you don’t have a girlfriend now, did you, at some point?”
Well… that was unexpected, Adagio blinked. She peered at the question, raising her chin a bit and fixing her jaw. “I’ve always hated that question,” she stated matter-of-factly, tone stooping as low as the accusation itself. “How did you know that you like boys? Did you give one hand-job and decide that was what you wanted to do for the rest of your life- or did you just know?” Adagio watched as the other girl grew smaller, drawing in on herself with every venom-dipped word. She flexed her brows. “I don’t need to have had sexual relations with someone else to know how I feel. My emotions aren’t that shallow.”
“I-I didn’t mean-”
“Of course you ‘didn’t mean’. No one ever does, do they?” Adagio scoffed, “next time you think about asking a question like that, do some introspective thinking.”
Sugar Belle finally looked up to open her mouth and closed it again. “I just-...” her lips pursed and Adagio could see how they drew against her teeth as the other girl rolled her jaw. Sugar Belle rubbed her thumb against her palm to calm herself, flustered under Adagio’s unwavering glare. “I don’t know.”
“You don’t-...” The taller girl paused, blinking for a moment before she widened her shoulders. “You don’t know what?”
“I don’t know if I like boys, okay?” Sugar Belle dropped her eyes again and rubbed her palm harder. “You just seem like you have yourself together and-... Well, honestly, you’re the first girl I’ve ever met that… Well, you know.”
Adagio sighed and closed her eyes, pressing her index finger to the centre of her forehead. “Well congratulations on meeting a lesbian for the first time.”
“N-no! That’s just it,” she shook her head, “I mean you’re the first girl I’ve met who… who seems okay with admitting it.” She let out a breath. “The cheerleaders at my school are…” Sugar Belle paused, mulling over the words in her mouth, “bitches. Uhm- pardon my french.”
Adagio raised her brows and folded her arms over her chest, puckering her lips as she waited for the other girl to elaborate.
“They aren’t nice.”
“Neither am I.”
“Well, no. But you aren’t mean.”
Adagio scoffed. “That’s what you think?”
Sugar Belle furrowed her brows with a frown. “You’re opinionated, sure, and headstrong- but you aren’t mean or-... vindictive.” She averted her eyes, cheeks warming in a light blush. “At least, that’s what I think. I guess I just wanted to believe that not every pretty girl was out to spite-…” she paused to shake her head, “never mind.”
“You think I’m pretty?” Adagio gave a playful smirk, raising a questioning brow as her eyes traced over the other girl’s frame. “That’s cute.”
Sugar Belle let out a grunt and closed her eyes, refusing to look at the smug expression she no doubt knew the other girl was throwing her way. “Anyway,” she continued, “I can’t exactly talk about this kind of thing with my team. You know how other girls would react-... I’d probably get accused of-”
“-sexual harassment? Watching them change in the locker room? Trying to ‘convert them’?” Adagio shrugged, “Yes; I know what you mean.” She leaned forward a bit and dropped her hands to the edge of the bed. “So you want to have girl-talk?”
“I want to know how to know. I want-” the smaller girl averted her eyes again, shifting instead to sit on her legs, “-I want to just be able to look at myself in the mirror and know if what I feel is love or if it’s just…”
Adagio waved her off and sighed. “I get it. You don’t need to elaborate.” She ran her tongue over her bottom lip. “So you’re bi-curious?”
“I guess.”
Adagio looked down at her knees and rolled her shoulders, sucking in a deep breath before she raised her head to let it back out. “So, what do you want?”
“Huh-?”
“Do you want to make out with me?”
“U-uhm-”
“Or do you want to just talk things out?”
Sugar Belle’s face burned a dark red and she waved her hands out in front of her as if to stop the other girl pressing any further. “I, uhm-...” she shook her head, “sorry this is just a lot really fast, uhm,” she pursed her lips and stared at the other girl with pointed eyes. “You really are Adagio Dazzle, huh?”
Adagio gave a lopsided smirk and tilted her head upwards slightly, raising her brows as her lips parted to flash a toothy grin. “You’ve done your own research?”
“I’m not an amateur just because I’m on a high school netball team.”
“Hm,” Adagio scoffed, amused, “cheeky.”
There was a tension in the air— but it wasn’t unwelcome; wasn’t bad. It was just tension. Adagio pushed herself from her bed to kneel beside Sugar Belle on her own, giving the other girl more than enough room to move to stop her if she so desired. But she didn’t. Adagio smiled. She pulled one leg closer into her pelvis as she left her other to hang off of the side of the bed, keeping herself up-right with her arm against the mattress. “How does this feel?”
Sugar Belle stiffened and sat straighter. “It uhm-... it feels nice.”
She moved to set her hand atop the other girl’s, pausing when she flinched, but intertwining their fingers as she felt Sugar Belle relax under her touch. “And this?”
“That’s n-nice too,” she found herself smiling.
She was cute. Really cute, Adagio thought to herself, almost embarrassed at the way butterflies fought against her resolve. She fixed a ringlet of hair that had fallen into the other girls face and tucked it behind her ear, and she could have sworn the heat that radiated from Sugar Belle’s cheeks was enough to keep a small house warm through the winter. Or maybe just her, on a spring night, in a hotel, the night before a school netball game. She wanted to laugh, but she knew she couldn’t. She didn’t want Sugar Belle to get the wrong idea.
But… was it the wrong idea? After all, wasn’t she only doing this to gain the upper hand for tomorrow’s match?
“A-Adagio?”
The taller girl blinked her eyes back into focus and looked into Sugar Belle’s cherry-red stare. She hadn’t even realised she’d been staring herself until the other girl smiled.
She dropped her voice to a whisper and cupped the other girl’s cheek. “And this?”
“I like it.”
Adagio found herself leaning forward and stroked her thumb over Sugar Belle’s skin, the other girl’s eyes fluttering closed as she readied herself. Adagio watched as her eyes twitched beneath their lids, trying her best to stay calm; to resist the urge to open them again, lest she ruin the moment. Adagio pressed her lips against the other girl’s and allowed her own eyes to close, relishing in the way she could feel Sugar Belle’s pulse pounding through every inch of her being. She smiled, and she felt Sugar Belle pull away with a sharp breath.
“How was that?” Adagio arched a brow and pulled her hand away to tuck her hair behind her own ear.
“Can we-... can we do that again? Uhm-”
Without hesitation Adagio brought their lips together again, pulling Sugar Belle into it as she hooked her hand around the back of her neck. She felt the other girl squeak against her but revelled in the way she instantly melted into the kiss, setting her own hands on Adagio’s shoulder’s and giving them a small squeeze. Adagio gave a squeeze of her own and opened her mouth slightly, pressing her lips against Sugar Belle’s once again as she tilted her head into the kiss. Sugar Belle reciprocated the action and opened her mouth to allow Adagio’s tongue to meet her own. She leaned forward and slid a hand down to rest over Adagio’s chest; over her heart; and the taller girl felt the way she smiled against her mouth.
Her heart didn’t race. It didn’t flutter or pound; it simply beat. Sugar Belle found a comfort in that.
The two girls continued on, breathing through their noses and occasionally pausing in their retreat to catch a deep breath here and there before coming together once again, repeating the action until it became second nature.
“How’s this?” Adagio would ask in a whisper.
“This is good,” Sugar Belle would reply, just as quietly.
The taller girl brought her hands to rest on Sugar Belle’s hips as the other girl manoeuvred to sit back against the headboard of the bed, and Adagio slipped between her propped-up legs, kissing her more prevalently. Harder. Sugar Belle cupped Adagio’s face and let out a quiet moan, face relaxing in delight as the taller girl pressed against her hips.
Once again, Adagio allowed her hands to explore; running them up along Sugar Belle’s sides, she grinned, before pulling them back to give a squeeze to her knees. Her fingers gently traced over the skin of her thighs, travelling up and under her skirt slowly; Sugar Belle’s breath hitched in her throat.
Adagio pulled back and wiped off her mouth with the pad of her thumb, raising her brows in delighted surprise. She moved to shift off of the bed and went back to the foot of her own to retrieve a pair of pyjamas from her bag. “Well,” she grinned, undoing the buttons on her blouse and pulling it over her head once it was loose enough, “I think that’s enough for tonight.”
The other girl stared at her, dumb founded and love-sick, not quite able to processes what had just happened until she reached up to touch her own lips with trembling fingers. “I-”
“You’re quite the kisser, but we have a big game tomorrow, and it’s getting late.”
Sugar Belle swallowed thickly and licked her lips, trying to savour the taste of Adagio that lingered there. “Uhm- right. So, uh. Tomorrow night-”
Adagio flashed a smirk and ran her tongue over her own lips, just over her teeth. “This is as far as we’re going tonight. But,” she raised a brow, pulling her hair from the collar of her pyjama top as she slipped it over her head, “depending on how things go tomorrow, I might want to take a little something else as a trophy, too.”
Sugar Belle gulped.
Adagio climbed into her own bed and turned off the lamp, facing away from the other girl to hide her own blush and spreading grin. “Goodnight, cutie. Good luck on the court tomorrow.”
Sugar Belle stared at Adagio’s back for a long time, trying to get her heart rate to come down before she even dared to move. She swallowed again, clutching the fabric of her shirt, and breathed in the scent of the other girl. “G-goodnight, Adagio.”
There was a comfortable silence, despite what had just happened before, and Sugar Belle followed Adagio’s lead to get ready for bed. It was while she was tossing her own shirt into her duffel bag that the older girl piped up again.
“You know…” Adagio spoke gently, “if you’re so uncomfortable…” her lips pursed as she tried to force out her next few words, “have you ever considered transferring? It might… make things easier for you. Make you more comfortable.”
She knew Adagio wasn’t looking for an answer. It was more a concerned suggestion; something to think about; and she knew, by God, that she would think about it.
Monday rolled around before long and Adagio let out an exasperated huff as two other teens sat across from her at their usual lunch table. “You’re late,” she sighed, flexing her fingers to inspect her handiwork, only to go back in to finish off her pinkie with the small bottle of nail polish she had sat beside her lunch tray.
“Sorry Dagiiii,” Sonata sing-songed, tapping her palms against the tabletop. When Adagio shot her a glare, hovering her nail polish brush over her hand, Sonata gave a sheepish smile and pulled her own hands into her lap.
Aria raised a brow and rested her elbow against the table, pressing her cheek against her knuckles as she watched the other girl finish off her work. “You seem in a good mood. How did the game go on Saturday? Did you lose?”
Adagio scoffed and plopped the lid back onto her nail polish. “Please. Me? Lose? Don’t be ridiculous.” She stretched out both hands to, once again, look over her work and grinned, leaning her elbows onto the table and resting her chin atop her freshly painted fingers. “I did lose one thing, though.”
“Huh? What the hell does that mean?” The two opposite Adagio looked between each other quizzically and shot her a questioning look. As the oldest girl rose to her feet, she collected her bag from where she had sat it beside her, on her side of the bench. “Adagio?”
“I’ve got to run.” Adagio tossed her hair over her shoulder and waved the two goodbye, pulling her bag over one shoulder as she rounded the table. “Like I said, you’re late. My team wants to talk about our next league match up. I have a good feeling about this year.”
Sonata spun in her seat and fixed her with a look. “Dagi, where’s your scrunchie? Did you lose it at the hotel or something? Is that what you lost?”
Visions flashed in the forefront of Adagio’s mind. Hot flashes of bare skin and heated kisses; teeth and fingers and hands. “Hm,” she paused in her stride only to shoot an apologetic look in Sonata’s direction, “yeah, that’s it. Sorry, ‘Nat.”
“It’s alright! I have other spares I can give you.”
“That’s great.” She pretended to check her watch and pointed her thumb towards the cafeteria doors, straightening out her skirt and giving her bag strap a squeeze with her other hand, “I really have to go, though. I’ll catch you at cheer practice. Aria, stop being a dweeb.”
Adagio didn’t wait for the other girl to reply with her own insult as she finally turned to leave, once again tossing her ponytail over her shoulder with a snicker. As she walked, she allowed herself to breathe, pressing her fingers against her lips gently as she found herself giggling. Honestly, it was ridiculous.
She’d set out to win, and she had; but she couldn’t stop thinking about every wink and blown kiss she’d sent in the other girl’s direction every time her team had scored against her. She half-wondered if Sugar Belle had thrown the game, and how she should have felt if that were true. But all she could do was giggle, shaking her head pitifully as she tried to fight the blush that warmed her cheeks.
She’d set out to win, and she had; but she couldn't wait to face off against the West High Knights again. She just hoped that the hotel would mess up their booking again, too. Maybe she would just have to make sure they did.
After all; she was Adagio, undefeated.
