Magical Shenanigans. That’s all that it could be described as. Sunset Shimmer’s farewell present to her friends at graduation had been six stones. “Mined and quarried from the Dragon Lands by unicorns skilled in gem mining with the aid of dragons to find the most magically entuned gemstones. These six gems will, even after I’ve returned to Equestria, allow you all to continue to use your powers.”
Tears. Hugs. Pictures. Lots of pictures. All at the mirror. Where it all began. The girls had insisted, Rarity’s dad had taken the pictures, and Principal Celestia had said a tearful farewell to a wonderful student. And then everything went to hell. The second Sunset’s foot disappeared through the mirror, the statue and mirror exploded. Shards of it blasted past the girls, who only just managed to remain mostly unharmed thanks to Rarity’s shield.
First, there was the fire. It wasn’t normal fire, it was blue. Like the flame burning at the center of a match. It was everywhere that the statue once stood. Then the wind picked up. The blue fire raged, spreading to the grass around the courtyard, licking at windows, clothes, hair, anything within its reach. Students dove for cover, thankfully avoiding getting burned. After the wind came the rain. Lots of rain. An absolute deluge of rain that filled the crater where the mirror once stood. The rain gave way to rumbling ground, causing the water to bubble and jump. Everyone was thankful there was no ruptures in the earth.
Then the screaming. From Twilight. Her friends rushed to her side as the young girl clutched her head, screaming in pain, thrashing, and rolling, curling into a tight ball. Anything she could think of to make it stop. And it did. She went flat, her eyes rolling into the back of her head as she passed out. The other girls all stood around her, not touching her, just watching her. Cranky Doodle, the gym teacher, ran over after fixing his wig and checked her pulse. He was trained for this, sort of. His nod signaled she was fine. Then the fire came again. Only this time, it wasn’t in the new pool.
Quick thinking from Rarity saved everyone. A massive diamond shaped wall appeared in the air above them as a ball of fire crashed into it, spreading quickly as an unseen wind picked up. Rarity strained to keep her wall above the school, but it was immediately clear that it was going to take a lot out of her. Especially when the water hit it. More rain, much more than before, was pounding the middle of the shield. Through the fire and the wind. All eyes turned up towards it, a collective gasp escaping the crowd. Rarity followed their gaze and her eyes went wide.
Fire, wind, and rain falling from the sky… those she could deal with. When the gigantic ball of rock slammed into the shield, she only just managed to keep it up as the ball, the flames, the water, and the wind completely vanished. Several of the students tried to talk, only for no sound to come. One even threw a rock at the school, missing the window. There was no clink of stone on stone. Pinkie Pie’s head shot up and she turned towards the street, staring. One by one, students, teachers and her friends turned as well.
Walking towards them, wearing no clothing at all, was a man. Or was it a woman? The breasts gracing the chest was confusing them due to the dangling rod between its legs. As was the tail swaying behind it. A few of the teachers shielded their students, but Celestia’s eyes were on Pinkie Pie. Princess Twilight said her friend Pinkie Pie had a sort of sixth sense, her Pinkie Sense. She could sense when things were going to happen. Sometimes where they were going to happen. The ones to watch out for were Doozies. Multiple things happening to Pinkie Pie at once.
The Principal watched her student and her eyes went wide as Pinkie’s hair went flat. No longer was it bubbly and exciting. Princess Twilight had a word for that too. Pinkamena. Not excited, not happy. Sad, or angry. Or terrified. Turning her eyes to the thing walking towards them, she did the one thing she never thought she’d do.
Not many teachers at CHS carried firearms. None of them, in fact. Not even the security guards, who had proved useless ever since magic was introduced. But Celestia had always kept her own skills with them sharp. She even had one in her desk. Just in case of a school wide emergency that required it. Ever since Sunset Shimmer had made her announcement that she was returning home, to Equestria, she’d started carrying it. With one of their defenders leaving, everyone needed to pitch in.
Drawing the pistol, she aimed at the thing that had Pinkie worried. She didn’t fire though. It paused, staring at her. Was it staring? She finally noticed it didn’t have a face. Then… it did. A disgusting grin split across its head, from ear to ear, like a mouth was literally ripping the head in half to appear. No teeth. For around three seconds. Then wicked looking, razor sharp teeth appeared in the mouth.
A single eye appeared, where any normal eye should be. It was completely black, devoid of light or life. Then a single pin prick of light appeared in it before spreading, splitting the eye in a slit of white. This thing… whatever it was… was evil. Nothing but. Celestia fired, hitting it square in the head. It fell backwards, dropping like a stone. She wasn’t going to let it hurt her students.
Suddenly, it lunged forward, bypassing all of them. Claws appeared on the ends of its hands. Wicked, sharp things. Meant for ripping flesh to shreds and tearing through bone. Celestia heard Luna scream. She heard her students, her six brave students, running to help her. Then nothing. No pain, no tearing agony. No sound.
It all came back to her a moment later. The creature was gone, in its place a cape. No… not a cape. A coat. A long coat with shredded ends. Resting on the back of the coat was a sword. A big sword. Following the coat down, she froze. The outstretched claw of the creature was still twitching, only a few inches from her foot. A sound like metal sliding over cloth brought her attention to the sword. As it drew, it slid clean from its sheath, its silver blade raising into the air. Celestia followed its path down as it slammed home into the face of the creature.
An ear splitting scream ripped through the air… and Canterlot High School exploded.
“What the hell was that!?” Rainbow shouted. She, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Applejack, Fluttershy and Twilight were all at Twilight’s house, in Twilight’s room, in their school clothes. At noon. They should have been at school, but there was no school. There was no Canterlot High anymore. Some thing had blown it up.
Twilight pulled out the journal Sunset had left her and flipped it open. The first blank page she came to, she wrote a quick message into.
“Did Sunset make it home?” All of them sat and waited, staring at the journal. Silence filled the room, save for the ticking of Twilight’s clock. It seemed to drag on forever. Suddenly, without warning, causing all of the girls to practically jump out of their clothes, the journal vibrated. They all stared as the message came back.
“Sunset made it home just fine. She’s reconciling with Princess Celestia, sorry, former Princess Celestia, she’s retired now. Thank you all so much for…”
“The mirror is gone” Rainbow didn’t even bother with punctuation. She snagged up the journal the moment they knew Sunset was safe. “We were all gathered around it when it exploded. We don’t know why, we don’t know what caused it, we don’t even know how it exploded but it exploded. It would have killed a bunch of students if Rarity hadn’t worked so quick to put bubbles around everyone. But then there was this plume of fire, and lots of rain, and crazy wind, and boulders falling from the sky, and then more fire and more rain and more wind… and then some evil thing showed up and Celestia shot it which was totally cool but scary too. But that didn’t stop it, only seemed to piss it off. Then some crazy strong guy showed up and made mince meat out of it. I think. We all wound up at Twilight’s house.”
The journal was silent for a while, likely Twilight reading Rainbow’s note, passing the message off to Sunset and the other, now former, Princesses and her friends, who were also going over it. It finally buzzed and everyone watched their reply.
“This is Princess Celestia. Whatever you do, don’t interact with the creatures or the one fighting them.”
Her message was short and to the point. Don’t interfere, don’t interact, and don’t get in the way. Stay put, stay safe. Twilight took the journal back from Rainbow.
“What are we going to do about the mirror? Sunset said she’d come back and visit us some day.”
Princess Celestia’s response was quick. “We will see what we can do on our end. For now, be patient and be safe. Twilight and Sunset will keep in touch via the journal. One of you must keep it at all times and bring us updates. My sister and I may not be the rulers of Equestria anymore, but we still care about the friends of our subjects.”
“So… we need to stay here. And stay safe. But she didn’t tell us who that was or what that thing was.” Rainbow said and Applejack gripped her friend’s shoulder.
“At least we have a game-plan now.”
