Plaid Stripes and Pistachio both have families that aren't supportive of their sexualities. They want to have dates to the upcoming Grand Galloping Gala, but they don't want to lead anypony on that they're not interested in, and they don't want to invite somepony that their parents wouldn't be happy with. Solution? They start a fake relationship with each other.
