Flight, And A Very Puzzled BonBon

Bon-Bon stared at the strangest contraption ever to grace ponykind. What in Celestia's name was this?! It had a pair of long, straight things across what she assumed to be its roof, attached to a narrow and long body. It had three windows on each side, one of which was mounted on a door. On the vehicle's front end were a pair of long, straight blades, such as those on an airship. These blades were connected to a cone, which was connected to the front before the large window that faced forwards. Towards the back was another set of straight things, whose back portion moved up and down like a lever. Above it was something tall and straight, also capable of movement. What is this thing?

Lyra was beaming with pride at this new contraption, whatever it may be. "Isn't it great, Bon-Bon?" Holding a pamphlet labelled 'Owner's Manual' in her yellow-gold aura, she trotted around the front of the vehicle and to the left side, opening the door with an audible 'pop.'

Bon-Bon nervously glanced around. What have you done now, Lyra? With another 'pop,' the right-hoof door opened, and much to her surprise, Bon-Bon saw her lover sitting in a seat inside the vehicle in front of a complex panel with an incomprehensible amount of levers, wheels, switches, dials, gauges... It was so much that it nearly caused her mind to overload. Sure, she was a SMILE agent, but never in her career had she seen something such as this.

Lyra motioned for her to get in, and Bon-Bon obliged, albeit reluctantly. The seats were surprisingly comfy, but that made the panel no less confusing. "Lyra, are you sure you know what all this does?"

Lyra laughed. "Of course! I read the owner's manual and I'm pretty sure I know what I'm doing."

Well, that was reassuring. A million more questions bubbled up to the forefront of Bon-Bon's mind, but through her confusion she could merely nod. Over in the left seat, Lyra held the manual aloft and began reading things off aloud. She took in her aura a silver key, and inserted it into a keyhole. "Oh, close your door," she said as she flipped a switch, causing a hum to reverberate from the machine that grew slightly louder.

Bon-Bon reached out with a hoof and closed the door, growing more and more worried by the minute. She watched as Lyra turned the key, and with a shake, a rattle, and a roar, the great contraption sputtered to life. Noise filled the ears of the two ponies as the vehicle roared like some monstrous beast. "It's so loud!" Bon-Bon said over the din of the machine.

"What?" was the only reply.

"I said it's-" Suddenly the noise became muffled. "Loud," she finished. Glancing up, she saw that her companion had cast a hearing protection spell inside the cabin, a welcome sign indeed. "Thanks, Lyra."

"Yeah, nothing in the manual said it would be that loud," the other mare replied. "I figured we ought to protect our ears."

"Smart."

"Now how do I make it go?" Once more, the green unicorn began to flip through the pages of the manual until she found what she was looking for, and once she did she stretched a hoof towards a black lever. She pushed it in and the noise grew louder, the contraption beginning to slowly move through the grassy field. It bounced along happily, skipping over bumps in the soil and through the grass.

"Alright, you made it go, now how do you make it turn?"

Flipping through the manual once more, Lyra slammed a hoof onto one of the pedals on the floor which Bon-Bon had failed to notice. The input caused the thing to veer to the left, catching Bon-Bon off guard. "What in the name of Celestia is this thing supposed to do?" she asked.

"Fly."

"How? Watch where your going!" Bon-Bon aggressively pressed the right pedal, and the thing veered to the right just in time to clear an abnormally large rock. She held pressure and the thing turned around completely, only to be set straight by a counter movement.

"Like this." Lyra glanced up from the manual to look outside the machine. Upon assuring that the area around them was clear, she reached for the red lever beside the black one and pushed it in all the way, followed by the transfer of her right forehoof to the control wheel. She then reached for the black lever once more, pushing that in as far as it would go. The thing clattered to life again, the roar growing louder and louder as several gauges moved their needles upwards. The grassy hillside now sped by, the machine lifting its front off the ground. Then, with a gentle yank of the control wheel, the ground began to fall away.

Bon-Bon couldn't tear her glance away from the window. Being an earth pony, never had she known what flying felt like. It felt like she was on top of the world! No wonder pegasi liked it so much! The only thing that made her jolt was the sudden dip to the right as her companion turned the machine to the right, towards a few clouds. She leveled off and continued forward flight, passing through the clouds in no time.

A blue pegasus suddenly appeared off the left side, prompting Lyra to open the window. "Hey!" she shouted. "Race you!"

"You're on!" the pegasus replied.

"Three, two, one!" Lyra shouted. Bon-Bon watched as the pegasus accelerated at a mind-boggling rate. Lyra made the machine accelerate as well, and it wasn't long before the pegasus flashed by again, being left in the dust. Lyra laughed and rolled the machine over in celebration before slowing down so her lover could enjoy the feeling of flight.

She'd have to thank Twilight for putting this thing together, that's for sure.

Bon-Bon trotted into the bedroom to find Lyra crashed out on the bed, the covers a total mess. "Aw, looks like somepony was pretty darn tired," she whispered as she crawled in next to her. She noticed the unicorn drooling adorably on the pillow, and reached out to caress her cheek with a hoof. She was sleep talking, muttering something about a 'Skyhawk' and racing Rainbow Dash. Sounded like a good dream indeed, but what was a Skyhawk?

Then came a phrase that made Bon-Bon's heart melt. "I love you, Bon-Bon," Lyra whispered, leaning in to kiss her marefriend. Bon-Bon took Lyra in her embrace and held her there lovingly, returning the kiss even though she figured Lyra thought it was imaginary. As Bon-Bon drifted off to Luna's dream realm, she whispered into her lover's ear.

"I love you too, Lyra."
