Prologue: The Death of Johnny Joestar
Load Full StoryNext Chapter(Shakedown Road: November 12th, 1901)
“I won’t use the Holy Corpse anymore! It will just bring misfortune to someone somewhere.” A man with tears running down his face; could be seen riding on top of a brown horse, clutched in his arms and sitting on a brown suitcase was a small child, whose skin appeared folded like that of origami paper. This man was Jonathan “Johnny” Joestar, and the boy he carried in his arms was his son, George Joestar.
Johnny looked down at his son, his face riddled with guilt as he watched the boy's skin continue to fold like paper. In his desperate attempt to save his wife from the disease that afflicted her, using the Holy Corpse had transferred the disease to his son, and Johnny knew that he had no one to blame but himself. He was the cause for his son’s current predicament, and he knew what he had to do to atone for it.
“George Joestar. I’m glad that I was able to meet you,” Johnny muttered, a small smile appearing on his face as he held his son tightly. “This is… enough for me. I couldn’t exchange that for anything. I have found my happiness… That cannot be replaced!”
With his final words to his child spoken, Johnny raised his right arm up and pointed his index finger at his son’s head. Suddenly, the fingernail of his index finger floated up and began to rotate around said finger, causing a blue circular flow of energy to surround his hand. As the nail continued to spin, a pink, ghostly figure could be seen forming behind Johnny, looking at the child Johnny held with its yellow eyes.
“It will be exchanged for something of equivalent value.” Said Johnny, before closing his eyes. “But I have something here that I couldn’t exchange for anything.”
The moment those words slipped from his mouth, the nail circling around his finger shot forward with the power of a bullet, piercing easily through the skull of George’s head. The moment the bullet made contact, Johnny’s body suddenly became rigged and his eyes widened as a gasp erupted from his mouth. Slowly the skin of Johnny’s body began to fold like paper, while that of his son’s slowly returned to normal, and just as the blond jockey’s skin fully took the form of folded paper, he felt an intense pain rush through his skull, and it was one he was quite familiar with as well.
After all…“KABOSH!” It was the feeling of a bullet being shot into his head, and not just any bullet…
...But the bullet that he had shot into his son’s head, being transferred into and piercing through his own skull, due to the power of Holy Corpse that was inside of the suitcase he held.
The feeling of bullet shooting through his skull caused Johnny to lose his grip of his son and the suitcase, and the body of the jockey fell off his horse and slammed down onto the hard ground below. The moment he hit the floor Johnny could feel the life slowly leaving his body, his vision becoming fuzzier and his breath becoming more and more shallow.
As his consciousness fades, his body functions shutting down and his eyesight rendered useless, Johnny was completely oblivious to something rising from underneath the Gingko leaves he landed on. In yet another moment, from out of nowhere, a large boulder appeared five meters over the head of Johnny and began descending. Oblivious to the fact that the rock was mere moments from crushing his skull into paste, Johnny Joestar only had one single thought going through his mind:
“Rina… George… I love you both, and I’m sorry…”
“SPLAT!!!” On this day, November 11, 1901, on Shakedown Road in the town of Morioh, Japan, Johnny Joestar has died at the age of 29. The cause of death: His head crushed by a boulder.
(Unknown)
“...nny…tar.”
“...johnny… joestar.”
“Johnny Joestar.”
A soft groan could be heard filling the air, signifying the awakening of the person that it was coming from. His eyes slowly opened, everything in front of him looked blurry for a few moments, but eventually; Johnny Joestar found himself staring up at an orange colored sky.
“...What…?” Johnny muttered, placing one of his hands over his face. The blond-haired male lifted himself up into a sitting position, before he began to get a better look of his surroundings, and his eyes slowly widened at what he was seeing. The jockey found himself sitting in the middle of a wasteland, filled with dead trees and brown and green patches of grass, and in the distance was a lake of water, and when he looked behind him, he found himself looking at a train resting motionless on the tracks.
“This… this is where…!” Johnny stuttered, not believing what his eyes were showing him.
“It was in this location that you suffered a great loss, but as well you had learned the true power behind The Spin.” A voice coming from his front rang in Johnny’s ear, and swiftly the blond jockey turned his head and looked forward, only to be met with the sight of the lake.
“Who's there!” Johnny shouted, sweat forming across his broad as he raised his right hand. “Show yourself!”
“Still your heart Johnny Joestar, for I am not your foe. You know who I am, as it was through your usage of my former body, that you arrived in this location.” Those words, the calming presence that they radiated, caused Johnny’s hand to lower slowly, as an expression of realization formed on his face. “...It’s you isn’t it?” Johnny said, his voice coming out softly. “You're the Saint... that the Holy Corpse came from…”
Standing behind Johnny, away from his peripheral vision stood a man with brown hair, his eyes covered in dark shadows and garbed only with a white cloth around his waist and what appeared to be a crown of thorns atop his head.
“Using the Holy Corpse for the purpose of healing your family, while a noble in its intention, was still a selfish act. You were willing to cause another to suffer the same illness that harmed those you love.” The Saint said, the tone in his voice never changing from its calm sound.
Johnny, upon hearing those words, gained a sorrowful expression as a frown formed from his lips. “Is that why I’m here then? To be punished for making an incredible selfish action without caring who it hurts?” Johnny questioned, his belief being that it was the reason he was here.
“...No. While it was true that your action of using the Holy Corpse was one of selfishness, the action that you took which resulted in your death was one of selflessness, therefore you shall not be punished.” Said the Saint.
An expression of confusion appeared on the Joestar’s face, as if he was here because he was to be condemned for using the Corpse, then why was he here.
“As you wonder why you are here, Johnny Joestar, I have a question that I wish to ask of you, and the answer that you give will determine what shall happen next.” Said the Saint.
“...So whatever I say will determine what happens to me?” Questioned Johnny, his gaze turning to the ground. “...Ask away. I mean, what more do I have to lose.”
“...If you were to tell you that I could send you to another world… would you like to experience it?”
“...what?” That was the only thing that Johnny Joestar could say, as his mind was trying to process the words that he was hearing, these words that spoke about sending him to another world. “...Send me to another world, you mean another dimension? Like the power of Valentine’s stand?”
“...No, what I speak of, sending you to another world, is not the same as the power of D4C; to travel across dimensions. What I propose to you... is that you will be sent to a world in which you never existed. The events of this world would be foreign to you, as would some of the people you would meet,” The Saint said. “At the same time, there are those who you will meet that are familiar to you…”
“People… who are familiar to me…?” Johnny whispered, a single person coming to his mind before any other. “Does that mean… will Gyro... be in this world?”
The idea of seeing Gyro again, seeing the Gyro that he had met during the Steel Ball run, his friend who taught him the spin and helped him to learn how to walk again, was something that filled Johnny with overwhelming happiness. A happiness that he only ever felt with his Rina and George.
“...I can neither confirm nor deny this possibility, but before making your decision you must understand something, Johnny Joestar. While some of the people you shall meet may become your allies, there will also be some who will become your enemies and will not hesitate to kill you at any moment.” Said the Saint. “Just as in your previous life; danger surrounded you, so will it surround you and the allies you make. If you choose to enter this world, no guarantee can be granted that you shall not die once again.”
Johnny allowed the words of the Saint to stew in his mind, processing what he had just heard and began to weigh the pros of the offer to the cons. On the side of the pros, not only would he be able to live again, albeit in a world different from his own, but the possibility of seeing Gyro again was something to him that made it worth it in of itself. On the sides of the cons; however, Johnny mewled over what the Saint had said, that some of the people he would recognize would be his enemies, causing the jockey to remember the foes he made during the Steel Ball Race all those years ago.
“So, that means Funny Valentine could be alive in this world that I can go to. Not to mention that means anyone that Gyro and I killed could be there as well.” Thought Johnny, remembering the enemies he had fought against. “Not to mention… Rina and George won’t be there…”
The thought of never seeing his wife and son caused a heavy feeling to build in his chest, remembering that it was his actions that caused him to be separated from his family. Part of him wanted to ask for maybe get a chance to return to his original world, to have a second chance at being with them, but he knew that wasn’t possible. Johnny had died, and even if he could go to another world with Rina and George in it, it wouldn’t be his Rena and George inhabiting it, just lookalikes of time.
After pondering in his thoughts for a few more moments, the blond-haired man felt tears well up; in his eyes as he closed them, allowing a sigh to escape his lips. “...If I’m going to be honest, the thing that I want most right now is to go back to ‘My Family’... my wife and son who I would do anything to protect and make sure survived even if I didn’t. I want nothing more than to be with them…,” Johnny stated, feeling the tears running down his face as he spoke. “But I know that I can’t… I can’t be with them anymore; so, I accept your offer, but if I could ask just one request from you, just one request and nothing more…”
Slowly, Johnny stood up from the ground he sat upon, lifting his head up towards the sky and opening his eyes to stare up at its orange color. His mind was made up, as he spoke
“Please… let them have a happy life.”
“...”
“...”
“...”
“Even though what you truly desire is to be with your family, you understand that it is impossible to return to them and simply plead for them to live happily, even if you cannot experience that with them.” Said the Saint, how unknowing to Johnny, had a smile adorn his face.
The saint placed a hand on Johnny Joestar’s shoulder, said hand having a subtle glow radiating from it for a moment, before fading away. “Despite the deeds of your past; I can see that, at your core, you are a good man Johnny Joestar. Begin your new life knowing that your family will live a long life, and that your bloodline shall live on.” Said the Saint.
Johnny’s eyes widened in shock from the Saint’s words, before an overwhelming feeling of sleepiness began to engulf his consciousness. He could hear words being spoken but, was unable to make out what was said as his feeling of sleepiness grew stronger. Just before he was completely consumed by it, a single word managed to slip past his lips.
“Thank you.”
(Unknown)
“Lick. Lick. Lick.” A groan erupted from Johnny’s mouth as he began to awaken from his sleep, the cause for this being that he felt something rubbing against the side of his head. The blond jockey pulled himself up into a sitting position and opened his eyes, his eyes needing a moment to focus, to allow Johnny to see that he was staring at a horse. A moment later, his eyes widened slightly as he recognized it as a white and black spotted Appaloosa Horse, one of which he was very familiar with.
“...Slow Dancer? Is that you girl?” Johnny said, disbelief laced in his voice.
The Appaloosa horse let out a snort from her, as if confirming Johnny’s suspension; before she bent her head down and rubbed her muzzle against Johnny’s face, which brought a small smile to the jockey’s face. “I’m happy to see you too girl, it’s been a really long time.” He said, glancing at his surroundings. “Though, where are we right now.”
Lifting himself up to his feet, Johnny took the moment to look around at his surroundings and given the number of tall trees around him that the sun peaked out from, he summarized that he was in a forest. When he turned his gaze towards the ground, Johnny saw what looked like a brown knapsack made of leather sitting a few feet away from him and walked over to it, bending down to pluck it from the ground.
“What’s this doing here, looks brand new.” Johnny said, opening it up and reaching inside. “Given that it has some weight in it, its gotta have some in it.”
Feeling his fingers rub up against something, Johnny grasped the object and pulled it out, seeing that it was the back of a small mirror. “A mirror, maybe this bag belongs to a woman or something?” Johnny muttered, flipping the mirror around.
Johnny flipped the mirror around to see if the glass on it had any cracks in it, but when the jockey’s eyes made visual contact with the glass; and he saw his reflection, they slowly began to widen from shock at what he saw…
...In the reflection of the mirror, was the face of Johnny Joestar when he was at the age of 17 years old, the age that he sustained the injury to his spine that had rendered him a crippled man.
“WHAT… WHAT THE HELL!!?”
...A New Bizarre Adventure…
Is About to Begin.
