Taco Salads (A SonTavia Romance)
“So where are we going today?,” Sonata asked as she climbed into the passenger side of her girlfriend's car.
Octavia Melody smiled and leaned across the seat to give Sonata Dusk a kiss on the lips. A kiss which Sonata was all too eager to return.
“I was thinking,” Octavia said as she pulled away. “Lunch, then we could just hang out at my house. Parents are out for most of the day”
Sonata leaned back into her seat. “‘Business’ meeting again? Or some kind of big elbow rubbing event.”
Octavia nonchalantly shrugged. “I think more of the latter. Anyways,” she put the car into drive, “where to, my lady?”
Sonata smirked. “Lady? Lady Sonata… Has a nice ring to it.
“Oh stop it, you!” Octavia giggled. “Anyways, if I know my girlfriend as well as I do, which I do! I’d say maybe-
“I am hurt!” Sonata put a hand to her chest. “That you would assume that just because my favorite thing to eat is a taco, that’s what I’d want!”
“So,” Octavia hummed, “you rather we go somewhere else!”
Sonata tried to protest, but with a huff, and growling stomach, she relented.
“No.”
Octavia smiled. “Still,” she said as she made the necessary turns to the drive through Mexican restaurant. “One of these days, you’re going to turn into a taco.”
“Hey!” Sonata protested. “I’ll have you know, I eat more than tacos... Burritos are okay.”
With a shrug, they pulled up into the parking lot, and got behind the cars. It wasn’t necessarily a busy day, although the line was long enough where, if you had the choice, you’d much rather go inside to order. However, the two girls much preferred this way as, one, decreased the states from anyone who either knew Octavia’s parents, or anyone else that may have had issues with their relationship. Secondly, it was nice just the two of them alone, together, holding hands over the radio as they talked or shared whatever was on their minds or wanted to know if each other.
That particular day, Octavia asked, “If I may why tacos? As a favorite food I mean. Nothing against it, but, is there some particular reason you like them so much?”
“Um,” Sonata contemplated. “Honestly, I don’t know. I mean, what’s not to like about them? There anything more to it than that?”
“Well no.” Octavia assured.”Was just a curious question. Didn’t know if there was some reason.”
“Well, I mean,” Sonata began. “Is there any particular reason your favorite color is red instead of green?”
“Fair point.” Octavia nodded. “But sometimes there can be memories link to a particular kind of food you like.”
“Oh?” Sonata looked up curiously. “Actually, now that you mention it, I don’t think I’ve ever asked you what your favorite type of food is.”
Octavia tapped on the steering wheel and looked away. “Um, well, it may sound silly-
“Sillier than dating a hundred year old fish who tried to take over the world?” Sonata deadpanned.
“Okay then.” Octavia laughed and relaxed. “Wellbeing truthful, I’m rather fond of a fresh caesar salad.”
“What’s that?” Sonata asked tilting her head.
“Well, in its simplest form,” Octavia explained, “it’s a baked chicken salad with Italian dressing.” She hummed at the thought. “ But if you want the real deal, it’s also comes with croutons and shredded mozzarella cheese. However, if I can help it, I’ll add fresh tomatoes and cucumbers.”
“That actually sounds tasty.” Sonata admitted.
Octavia raised an eyebrow. “You don’t think it’s strange I like some “vegetables’ over a greasy burger?” She cringed. “Then again, when you have an experience of telling Vinyl that and she calls it, ‘‘rabbit food’...
Sonata burst out laughing.
“I mean it!” Octavia cringed.
“Sorry!” Sonata apologized, giving Octavia shoulders a squeeze. “But it sounds kind of cute.”
Octavia gave a so-so motion with her hands. “I guess.”
“So, why then?”
Octavia looked at sonata quizidly.
“I mean, you asked me if there’s a reason I liked tacos, so it only seems fair to ask if there’s a reason you like salads, particularly this ceaser one, over anything else.”
“Well,” Octavia began, “I guess it was because it was served after my first concert recital.” She fawned over the memories. “It was part of a package deal with the concert along with all the other band kids. Of course, being a school recital, it meant the main course was little more than cafeteria food. So I guess the salad stood out more in my memory as my favorite part.”
“Radical!” Sonata beamed as they reached the ordering window.
“Hello!” the person on the other end spoke through the speakers. “Order when ready.”
Sonata looked to the ground. “You know, if you’re in the mood for a bit of preparation, maybe we could instead swing by the supermarket and pick up some salad making kits? I mean, it would also something we could do together when we get home?” For added effect, she rubbed Octavia’s hand.
Octavia turned to her. “You sure? I wouldn’t mind-
Sonata held up a hand. “You’re right. I think I am starting to turn into a taco. You better hurry and save me?”
Beaming, Octavia answered the underpaid worker, “Thanks, but, we’ve changed our minds. Sorry.”
They pulled out of the line, went to the store, and purchased all the ingredients. That said, Sonata salad became more of a chicken taco salad, the two had a wonderful evening together.
With that, they pulled out of the line, and went to the grocery store and, under Octavia’s guidance, bought what they needed.
The rest of their day was spent in Octavia’s kitchen, chopping, mixing, baking, laughing, smiling, and occasionally throwing food at each other. Although they kept the ladder to just the lettuce leaves so as to not have to waste time cleaning up.
Once they were done, standing with their elbows on the kitchen counter next to each other, looking down at their hard work, Sonata tried a caesar salad for the first time?”
“How is it?” Octavia asked, forkful in her own mouth.
“Not bad.” Sonata admitted after a third bite. “We should do this more often. Maybe next time, we can try making something like a taco salad if such a thing exists.”
“Can’t say that it doesn't.” Octavia happily rolled her eyes.
“The best part,” Sonata smiled, scooting over something where their sides were pressed together. “I get to do it with you.”
Octavia had no words to that. A tingling sensation running up her spine at Sonata’s contact. Turning her head to face her girlfriend, the two stares longingly at each other for a minute. At one point, their hands locked with each other, which was shortly followed by a deep and passionate kiss.
