Mansion Magic Spooktacular!
"You can't seriously expect me to believe in an honest-to-goodness haunted house, can you?" Twilight asked with a sigh.
She and Trixie were en route out of town, following a set of directions scribbled in the front-page of Trixie's notebook. It was late evening, the time when the sun was just beginning to light the rest of the sky aflame as it fell behind the mountains, and the street-lights had only minutes ago snapped to life, casting spatters of warm light through the blanket of approaching night.
"No," Trixie said, smirking, "I don't expect you to believe it. Just that you'll stay there for the night."
Twilight sighed again and tilted her head to the side with a grumpy, scrunched-up mouth.
"And why am I expected to do that, exactly?"
"Simple," Trixie said, her grin gleaming in the fading sunlight. "It's the largest private collection of magical literature anyone's donated in centuries. There are rooms full of ancient books, old spells and forgotten enchantments... it's practically an inviation do spend the evening, wouldn't you say?"
Twilight crossed her arms with a grumble.
"Maybe," she said, eventually, muttering it quietly. "I mean... they're probably reprints, anyway."
"We'll leave that as a matter for examination," Trixie said. She gave Twilight a patronizing pat on the head and giggled as Twilight frowned on cue. "Has Trixie ever told you that you're adorable when you're angry?"
"Trixie has been telling me a lot of things lately," Twilight said, huffing and doing her best to ignore Trixie's aura of self-satisfaction, which emanated off her like the glow from a... glowing thing. Dang it. Even Twilight's similes suffered when she was distracted like this. Stupid, slightly-more-than-attractive Trixie... what were they supposed to be doing again?
"Come on," Trixie said. She put a hand in the back-pocket of Twilight's jeans and gave her bottom a squeeze. Despite Twilight's glare, the hand remained distinctly placed as the pair of them migrated down the out-of-town trail towards the mildly-mysterious mansion looming in the distance. By the time they got there, Twilight had practically gotten used to the squeezes—maybe even liked them a little.
It was only as Trixie removed her hand and used it to open the ominous antique set of locks on the mansion's foreboding entrance that she noticed it—the scale, that is. A little blue thing, clinging to her hand like a tuft of down to a baby bird. Though it stuck when she pulled at it, after a little more finicking, the thin, hard thing came lose, feeling in her hand rather like a shimmery sequin from one of Rarity's seemingly never-ending supply. She considered it for a moment in the dimming light, then tucked it into her pocket for safekeeping. It'd look nice glued to a walnut with a pair of googly-eyes, in any case.
And though she'd done her best to remain staunch in the name of stern and understandable science the whole way, Twilight's nervous shiver was noticeable enough to give Trixie another persistent grin as the two of them entered the unlit abode.
The door creaked loudly as it fell closed behind them.
They were in for the long haul now—or, one night, at least.
Somewhere, in the many overlapping patches of darkness, Twilight thought she heard a faint hissing, following her as she walked with Trixie down the mansion's introductory hallway. But when she listened closer to pick the noise out, it seemed to disappear.
Leave it to Trixie to begin playing games before the night have even started... Twilight ignored what little other hissings seemed to wriggle at the periphery of her perception, steeling herself with a reminder that Trixie was mostly bark and no bite. All Twilight had to do was weather the first set of juvenile halloween hijinks, and in fact see if the literature collection existed at all. If it did, she could look forward to an evening of studying, occasionally harangued by Trixie in the background, as it would be at least polite to let her hang around. But if there were no books... well, Twilight had been on the receiving end of pranks between frenemies for a little too long. Maybe it was time for her to cook up a deceiving concoction of her own accord. She did oh so love the look of wrung-out salty sourness that appeared on Trixie's face when she was the butt of a joke, instead of being the one butting other people. If nothing else, the rest of the evening could server as acceptable fodder for brainstorming suitable retaliation.
Of course, this was all assuming quite a bit on Twilight's part. Not least of which was the fact that even Trixie would struggle to surrender the advantage of having a location all to one's self before entering and escorting through the premises at night. There was a lot you could do, for example, with just a bucket of water and a slightly ajar door...
"Twilight," Trixie said, her voice piercing a veil of mental fog almost as thick as the clouds drowning the sunlight. "Are you paying attention? I was saying we're almost to the collection."
Twilight blinked and stared at Trixie like she'd been caught peeking through the cookie jar.
Trixie let out a loud huff.
"Don't tell me you're not even interested in perusing the professor's posthumous estate! Trixie made special care to invite you because she was sure you'd be overjoyed at an opportunity to study such archaic literature."
While Twilight's face sank, Trixie's lower lip quivered, and her eyes sparkled as she began to sniffle.
"Trixie just wanted to do a favour for her best—for one of her best friends." Trixie stared with her watery eyes down towards the floor, a chipped-and-scratched wood that had almost enough dust to serve as a rug.
Twilight's imaginary retaliations collapsed in her head. Suddenly she was worrying for nothing, a big jerk who'd ruined a potentially rewarding evening studying with a friend.
"Oh," Twilight said. She reached out a hand and put it on Trixie's shoulder, giving her a few squeezes in an attempt at reassurance. "I'm sorry, Trixie. You're right. I wasn't... I let myself get distracted." Twilight gave a small, soft smile, which was enough to get Trixie to lift her head a little, still sniffling, but with a tiny smile of her own. "I promise I'll pay attention from now on. You said we were almost to the books?"
Trixie nodded and wiped a tiny drop of water off her cheek with one hand. Behind her back, invisible to Twilight, two of her fingers were crossed.
"Thank you," Trixie said, tucking both hands into her pockets. "Trixie appreciates your apology."
"That's what friends are for, right?"
A bolt of lightning flashed down from the sky outside, illuminating the hallway windows and the interior of the mansion hallway like a brilliant set of stagelights, just for a moment, before everything returned back to almost pitch darkness, only just bright enough to see a few feet ahead of you.
As she turned the handle to the study entrance, Trixie smiled a private, devilish smile.
"Right," she said, barely loud enough for Twilight to hear. "That's what friends are for."
Because Twilight was behind her, she didn't see the look on Trixie's face, nor did she notice the rapid flick of Trixie's tongue, seemingly forked into two, darting out of her mouth before turning back just as quickly.
Twilight did begin to hear the hissing again, but like last time, she told herself to ignore it. Ignore it and follow Trixie into the study, where all her questions would be answered...
The door shut behind her with a snap, despite the fact that neither she nor Trixie had pulled it closed.
In the dark, the only thing visible was Trixie's shimmering, fanged smile...
"First, Trixie wants you to apologize for doubting for even a second that there was not an overflowing book repository here for your perusal."
Alright. It was going to be one of those nights. Twilight conceded she'd technically sealed her own fate by openly admitting she didn't trust Trixie entirely... but that was common practice between them by now. If she'd said otherwise, Trixie would know instantly she was lying.
Twilight let out a long, exhausted sigh, which blew up a hefty scattering of dust, clinging one moment to the faded covers of ancient volumes, the next, fluttering about at eye level and dancing in the lamp-light like miniature insects spiralling toward heaven.
Yes, they had gotten a lamp out. Finally. It escaped Twilight why they hadn't brought one in the first place. The fixture in use now was only a result of Twilight's conjuring, and thank Celestia she had a spell for summoning lanterns tucked away just for such an occasion... Trixie had been no help, of course. 'Just read in the dark. It's a more intimate experience that way.' Tsk.
"Alright," Twilight said, after weathering Trixie's stubborn stare as long as she could tolerate. It began to wear on you after a while, like a spinning stone wheel grinding away at a hunk of granite... "Fine. You were right. There were books here."
"And?" Trixie raised an eyebrow and tilted her nose up slightly, a masterful execution of the 'just snooty enough to let you know you're worth less than dirt' look. If there was one thing Trixie knew how to savour, it was the flavour of a beleaguered apology from one of her friends—and Twilight's were her favorites, of course. A little lavender sundae with whipped cream on top. And a cherry. With sprinkles. Yes.
Twilight let out another long sigh. Not that she could read Trixie's thoughts or anything—it was easy to tell what Trixie was thinking about almost all of the time.
Herself.
"And I'm... sorry." Ugh. It tasted bitter, like a lime covered in tumeric.
"What was that?" Trixie asked. She crooned her head to one side, sticking an ear in Twilight's direction. "I'm sorry, Trixie couldn't quite hear you over the complete silence of all these old, dusty books that are definitely here..."
"I said I'm sorry!" Twilight said with a huff. "Come on, are we going to do this all night? I want to start reading some of these!"
"Oh, very well. As long as you express proper gratitude towards Trixie for delivering such a treasure trove to your proverbial doorstep, we can be on with the remainder of our evening."
Twilight had already sat down cracked the spine of the first text in front of her. She looked up at Trixie and raised an eyebrow.
"By 'express proper gratitude', you mean..."
Trixie felt a little giggle in her chest, but she swallowed it and kept her face staunch, disapproving, almost expressionless. Yes, Twilight, that was exactly what she'd meant, but it was no fun if things were obvious that fast...
Trixie took a moment to gather herself, then stared dead-eyed at Twilight, the most humourless face she could muster.
"A 'thank you' is customary," Trixie said, her tone ice cold. "But perhaps that would be asking too much."
Twilight's stern exterior crumpled. Maybe she'd been too hard on Trixie. It was, after all, an incredibly kind thing of her, to share such a large, unexplored literary resource. Maybe it was just the dusty shelves and creaky old floor-boards putting her in a bad mood. Maybe she needed to go a bit easier on Trixie for a little while. They were friends, after all. "I'm sorry, Trixie," Twilight closed the book she'd been ready to get into and stood up from the old oak desk it was resting on. She went to Trixie's side and put a hand on her shoulder—which, after a moment of silent approval, transformed easily into a hug, Twilight wrapping both arms around Trixie's waist and squeezing her just tight enough to get a little 'umph' out of her; to feel the warmth of her body, again, just a little, and for Twilight's breath to 'accidentally' tickle the back of Trixie's neck.
Trixie's willpower was formidable, but she couldn't hide the shiver it gave her. Luckily, Twilight was too focused on apologetics to notice.
"It's alright," Trixie said. Somehow the night was only beginning, and yet she felt a swirling in her head, an unfamiliar, syrupy voice luring her forward into a tantalizing wreath of shadows.

"Yes, Trixie?"
The night had crept on, as nights do, into the early sort of itself, when shadows were longer than they ever ought to be, and if you looked out the window you couldn't tell the difference between the darkness fifty feet away and th edarkness right next to you. Twilight was sure she remembered a set of stone statues set in array around the mansion, but now she couldn't spot a single spot of them, solid head nor hair, and she was beginning to consider asking Trixie if they'd ever been there in the first place. Passages she was scanning for relevant sections blurred together, and often she found she'd be reading the same page twice, often three times, unable to tell the words apart even though they were exactly the same. Reading fatigue, even more consuming as the scripts danced between different dialects and variants of archaic sigils. Twilight's head felt heavy and fuzzy at the same time, and she hadn't brought any coffee.
Then there was Trixie sidling up next to her, with a handful of something warm pressed against the small of Twilight's back. It felt like the start of a sensuous massage, and Twilight let out another sigh, this one decidedly less beleagured. Trixie patted her on the shoulder as she brought the source of the warmth around, a steaming cup of something with an aroma too varied to be the pungent singular sting of a blackened coffee bean.
Twilight inhaled deeply, and the rich scents painted her senses, a bouquet of warm-water flavours milked from the depths of a tea-bag. Watching Trixie set the steaming saucer on the desk brightened Twilight's face with a smile, and a patch of smog in her head seemed to clear.
"Oh," Twilight said. Again, she'd assumed the worst, and the guilt that followed was a heavy pang in her stomach. She wondered if it was possible to unlearn a year's old habit in a single night. "Thank you," she said quietly.
Trixie smiled and nodded to her.
"I thought you could use something to help you stay awake. Are you really planning to go through all of those?" Trixie eyed the giant stack of tomes Twilight had piled up on the desk. "Tonight?"
Twilight sat up in her chair, greeted immediately by the muted shouts of her spine, being crouched over for the better part of an hour.
"No," she said meekly. "Just... there's so much interesting material, it's hard to stop reading."
"Even if it's just as hard to keep your eyes open?"
Twilight sighed and rolled the eyes in question. She picked up her cup of tea and sniffed in the rich steam. Her eyes felt slightly less heavy, though her resolve remained unwavering regardless of the state of her body's fatigue. She took a sip of the tea, and it was delicious: she caught a hint of pomegranite, with an outline of citrus. Puzzling out the flavours in her head was more fun than asking about them.
"You know," Trixie said, moving quietly to Twilight's other side, "Trixie couldn't help but notice, as she came in, there were several secluded study rooms no doubt teeming with forgotten literature." Trixie's hand had worked its way onto Twilight's shoulder without seemingly any awareness of it doing so, and was now gently squeezing, working the hidden soreness out of Twilight's muscles and easing her along with the tea.
"Mhmmm... that feels nice." Twilight closed her eyes and leaned her head back, prompting Trixie's hand to climb higher, to the base of her neck, where Twilight's moans doubled in intensity. "Oooh..."
"Would you like Trixie to show you to one of the room's in question?" Trixie said, slurring her speech slightly, lapping her tongue insidiously just at the edge of Twilight's ear.
"Oh... y-yes... please..." Twilight shook her head, coming too suddenly, Trixie's hand reorienting itself simultaneous, so the two of them were just next to each other, nothing sinister or unbecoming between them.
Just the sensation of Trixie's fingers left over on Twilight's skin, the little electric tickles she could feel ebbing into her memory.
"Very well. Follow Trixie, and we'll show you exactly what you're looking for."
"Thank you..." Twilight's voice seem to come from far-away inside her chest, as though she was watching herself speak through a lens, able to tilt and sway the feel of the observation, but not the outcome itself. She was standing already, watching herself stand, taking the tea on its saucer and following Trixie, to the end of the giant library and down a dank hallway, lined with seemingly identical rooms on every side... one or more of which supposedly held the additionally enchanted stores even more teeming with ancient magic for Twilight to examine.
Regardless of the certainty of the situation, the potential payoff was too powerful to resist. Twilight felt like a dream she would later describe to herself in detail. Walking behind Trixie found her eyes falling halfway to the floor, for some reason watching the miniature bounces of Trixie's taut and toned butt bobbing in her skin-tight jeans. Twilight's own clothes felt surprisingly too tight, as though they'd grown smaller on her skin over the course of studying. Was that possible, or was it just a mood, the heat sweltering in the back of Twilight's head creeping in to insidious places.
"Here we are," came Trixie's voice from as far away as the rest of reality. Twilight dragged herself back in by sheer force of will, occupying her body fully at last, even though the outlines of reality did feel a bit fuzzy and insubstantial. It was very good tea, and she couldn't wait to drink some more once she was sitting down again...
"Thank you," Twilight said. She rubbed a hand against her forehead. "I'm feeling a little off all of a sudden..."
"Why don't just sit down for a little bit? I'm sure you'll feel much better." Trixie's hand was on Twilight's, pulling her forward into the murky room, even more unlit than the library, how was Twilight supposed to get any studying done when she couldn't see—
"Here you are," Trixie said. She shoved Twilight into the seat of the desk that sat somehow at the center of the room, piled around with scribbled papers and pieces of parchment that looked as though they'd been ripped from scores of texts in different scripts.
Twilight was sitting down. Her tea was in front of her, though she could barely make it out. And Trixie was...
Gone, behind her, smiling as she shut the door.
"Have fun..." she whispered, just before the click.
Twilight sat for a moment. Then she took a sip of her tea.
It tasted very good.
It was important to note that Trixie was relatively certain no immediate harm would come to Twilight, shut away in such a small room with the vestige of phantoms lurking around her.
Almost one-hundred percent, as a matter of fact.
The tea, for example, had just been that: tea. Trixie put special attention into eking out the deepest flavour from the 'bed-time blend' she'd selected, hoping to get Twilight a little on the sleepy and suggestive side... but there was nothing untowards about that. Simple suggestion, hardly admissable as evidence anywhere important...
There was, however, the matter of the little statuette she'd snatched up prior to inviting Twilight over for the evening. The one that had inspired the whole affair, and was presently practically burning a hole in the pocket of Trixie's robe... her hand curled around it naturally, the low, reptillian hind-brain satisfaction of holding something solid. She knew how gorgeous it looked out in the light, but even in the shadows, she was sure she there were new curves and particulars to the carving she had missed out on. It felt warm in her hand as she drew it out of her pocket, only cooling as she spread her palm open and studied it there, resting on a solid base that felt heavy, like stone, but light and glossy, like a polished volcanic shard. The curves seemed to take in the glimmer of the evening stars even through the sheen of the dusty curtains.
It was, in so many words, a snake.
Not one like Trixie had seen before—none of the snakes she knew stood up straight on their curled haunches, with arms and hands and bounding breasts. From down the hallway, Trixie could make out a faint moan in Twilight's voice.
Her fanged smile crept even wider.
Now there is the matter of magical texts, and that is where no one can ever be certain of things turning out one way or another. When you insert intent into the matter, especially left-over intent the remnant of a magical someone-or-other over a thousand years old, unaccounted happenstance are practically guaranteed. Twilight Sparkle knew all about this, and she would have told it to you if she was in any condition to do so.
The tea, as already explained, was nothing more than tea. That part perhaps Twilight knew, in the back of her head, whatever part of her was content to play along with Trixie's sudden insistence that she relocate, no matter how intriguing the volumes hidden away in this corner of the mansion might have been... there was the whole night to explore, wasn't there, and then some, as long as the mansion didn't vanish into a crack in the earth any time soon. Twilight fostered a minute suspicion in the back of her mind, more or less always present in some form or another, that at some point, the entire thing would collapse like a stage-show in primary school, all the book-cases would become clumsily-painted bits of staging, caricatured props, and Twilight would be at the center of a thousand pointing hands laughing in disbelief that she'd ever believed a word out of Trixie's mouth in the first place.
That inhibition had gotten her nipped twice already though. Maybe, at the end of the day, friendship meant not a lot more than forgiving what was in the past and making the best of the future.
So far, at least, Trixie had been true to her word. Twilight had scoured more unreadable combinations of arcane script that her brain would have been able to imagine on its own, even with the assistance of a lot of caffeine and a very large volume on ancient Equestrian. Not much had emerged yet in terms of actual, usable knowledge, but her thirst for the inscrutable had been whetted properly, and there was no way anyone, even someone as cunning as The Amazing Trixie could be capable of cobbling together that convincing a set of texts. Twilight had her hands on the genuine article, and therefore something even older and more awash in mystic energy than ever before.
Again, chiding herself for doubting Trixie, Twilight let her hands rest shakily on the cover of one of the forgotten books. The dust that scattered under her fingertips was like the first, wheezy breath from the dry-wracked lungs of a thousand-year old ghost, and enough to cause the hair on the back of Twilight's neck to stand on end. Though there was no one else in the room with her, she was certain the metaphor had come along with a real, genuine sound of someone wheezing.
The place was old though. Very old. Heck, Twilight heard her own place make similar noises at night when she was up too late reading, uh... 'anatomy' textbooks... It was probably just the room settling. Or a book falling into place as a spiderweb collapsed. Or...
"No," Twilight said out loud, "that's definitely an arm."
A translucent one, like a chain of smoke and vapour, reaching out of the wall just to Twilight's right and over the desk, towards her blouse.
Twilight was dressed as though she'd come straight from school, shades-of-purple button-up blouse and a skirt to match. She didn't consider an evening of reading to be an occasion for dressing up, and besides which, wouldn't have found anything more fasionable in her closet if she'd searched anyway. Who was she trying to impress... Trixie?
The arm, meanwhile, made its acquaintance with Twilight's shoulder. The fingers touched her skin, trailing on the surface like normal human hands, before sinking into her flesh, giving the sensation that her entire arm had been chilled with a bucket of ice-water from the inside. It wasn't terrible, or painful—almost invigorating, in a kind of 'dunk your head in a bucket during summer' sort of a way. But it did leave the lingering sensation that she'd been... well... Twilight checked again, tilting her body from side to side. She was, in fact, stuck firmly to the seat of her chair. An old wooden one, not too comfortable for long periods of reading, or even short periods of sitting. But an uncomfortable butt was, at present, the least of Twilight's worries.
"Listen," she said, hoping that whatever the apparitions intentions were, it at least spoke some of the local dialect. "Let's be reasonable about this. We've just met, and I'm only here to look at these old books." Twilight did her best to ignore the sensation of a second hand, which had appeared from the opposite wall and was dancing around the back of her neck like someone blowing little breaths onto her skin. It made her whole body shiver, another combined sensation she couldn't identify as fear or arousal. "I'd, uh... reallylikeitifyouandicouldgoouttogether—"
"Slowly. Deep breath."
Twilight swallowed a large chestful of air as directed.
"Right," she said. "I just wanted to say, uh." Pause. "I'd really like it, if, uh." Pause. "You were my... you know." Pause. "Girlfriend." Pause. Pause. Very long pause.
Trixie grabbed Twilight's face with both hands and smiled at her.
"I'd like that too."
Smooch.
Twilight wondered what she was supposed to do to signal a feminine swooning now that she couldn't raise one leg up. She settled for letting herself fall forward and rest against Trixie's chest, using her like a big sturdy pillow. That felt right.
The kiss, like Trixie's attentions earlier, could have gone on forever, but it ended before the moment of 'now' stretched out too long, when Twilight could still catch her breath but also remember a time when she couldn't. Her mouth felt moist again, Trixie's tongue dancing around having done its work.
"Are you okay sleeping here tonight?" Trixie asked.
"Yes," Twilight said, then turned her head sharply with a sour expression, as though she'd just heard the question after answering. "Here? Like, in this room? There isn't even a couch to—"
"Not here, silly," Trixie interrupted. She flicked her tongue out at Twilight, leaving it to dangle in the air for a moment before snapping back between her fangs. "This place is gigantic. Spacious bedrooms. We'll be really comfy."
"Oh," Twilight said. She felt silly. Maybe she ought to give herself a nice night's sleep before assuming her intellect was operating at full capacity. There were a lot of differences between being a girl and a snake girl, for example...
"Don't worry," Trixie said. "Just follow me." A pause. Smirk. "It's what you're best at."
Twilight hissed, her eyes narrowing sharply in Trixie's direction.
And even though both of them had technically changed quite a bit, somehow, things felt about the same as ever.
Well.
Maybe with slightly more sex, then.
