Starlight And The Lone Crafter
Learning the Basics
Previous ChapterStarlight groaned in protest as she woke up from the light of the morning sun which started to seep in through the windows of the cabin. Rubbing her sleep filled eyes, Starlight forced herself to get up and moved to a siting position on the oddly comfortable bed. Looking up she saw that Silver was already up and rummaging through on of the chests as though he was looking for something.
"What are you looking for?" She asked as she stood up.
"Found it," Silver said. Pulling out what looked like a book and turned to her. "This book is a guide for new adventurers who want to go out and explore. The information that it provides should give you a basic understanding of the world and how to survive in it."
Silver walked over to Starlight and handed her the book. "Go ahead and read it. I'll go outside and get some things set up." He turned and walked over to the door. Before opening one of the doors he turned to Starlight. "When you're done reading come outside and we'll put what you've learned to the test."
With that the crafter left the Cabin and closed the door. Starlight looked at the book and read the title, 'Beginner's Guide to the Worlds of Minecraft.' Raising an eyebrow she shrugged and sat down on a nearby chair and started reading.
Two Hours Later
After having finished reading the guide book Starlight opened the doors of the cabin and walked out. Looking around she saw that there were two piles of blocks set up a ways from the front of the cabin. Looking at the piles she saw that one of the piles consisted of oak wood logs while the other pile was cobblestone. She didn't see Silver anywhere and was thinking of looking for him when he suddenly appeared from around the corner of the cabin at the left side.
"I take it you finished the book?" He asked as he walked up to Starlight.
She nodded and the pair walked over to where the two piles were set up. Once they got up to the piles Silver turned to Starlight.
"Alright, now that you have an understanding of how things work why don't we start with the first steps in surviving out in the wilderness." He pointed over to the log pile. "Your first task is to gather some wood and use it to make a crafting table and later some tools." He then pointed towards the pile of cobblestone. "Once you've done that go and harvest some cobblestone and make some stone tools."
He then moved his hands behind his back, "So, do you have any questions?"
Starlight looked between the two piles before looking at the crafter with a raised eyebrow, "Wouldn't I need an ax to begin with?"
Silver chuckled as he shook his head. "Sorry, but I'm not going to be helping you with that. I find that personal experience can be the best teacher when it comes to crafting and gathering resources. I'm sure you'll be able to figure it out." He then turned and walked away. "I'll come back later and check on your progress. Once you've figured out how to craft we'll move on to building."
With that he waved his hand as he walked around to the back of his cabin and disappeared, leaving a very annoyed Starlight standing between the two piles of blocks. She then turned and glared at the log pile.
"Great, so he's expecting me to be able to break these blocks with my bare hands." She closed her eyes in defeat as she sighed. "Well, I guess I'll have to follow his advise and figure out how to do this."
She walked over to the log pile and grabbed at one of the blocks to try and pick it up. She quickly found that it wouldn't budge after making at least three attempts to move it to no effect. She then punched the block out of sheer frustration when she noticed something interesting happened. She knelt down to the block and proceeded to knock on it a few times and watched as what looked like cracks forming on the block and when she stopped the cracks disappeared.
Upon seeing this Starlight proceeded to repeatedly knock on the block until the cracks reached the point to where the block finally broke and a smaller version popped up in its place. Picking up the block she started to go over what she had read and successfully made a crafting table. She then harvested two more oak blocks and proceeded to craft some planks and turn some of them into sticks. Once that was done she went ahead and crafted herself a wood ax and proceeded to chop the rest of the wood, all the while finding the process to be slightly faster than when she did it by hand. After having collected all of the wood blocks and tuning them into planks and sticks she turned to the pile of cobblestone.
Okay, if I remember correctly I need a pickax if I'm going to mine this cobblestone.
Turning back to the crafting table Starlight proceeded to make herself a wooden pickax. Upon completion she walked over to the cobblestone pile and mined three blocks before turning back to the crafting table and crafting a stone pickax. As she figured, the stone pickax proved to be even more effective than the wooden one and soon she had finished mining what was left of the pile.
By the time she was done Silver came back from whatever tasks he was doing back behind his home. He saw that Starlight had completed her task and proceeded to walk up to her.
"Looks like you've figured out what to do," he said with a grin, "nice job."
Starlight smirked at the praise. "So what's next."
"The next thing that you need to do once you've got your basic resources is to build a shelter." Silver replied. He then pointed to two chests that were in front of his cabin. "Feel free to look in the chests over there and pick up any blocks that you want to use. Once you've taken what you feel you need go ahead and build yourself a house. I'll be going around back to take care of a few more things. I'll come by later to check on your progress."
With that he once again made his way to the back of the cabin and disappeared. Shrugging Starlight did as he said and walked over to the chests and found them filled with both planks and cobblestone. Figuring that these would be the only blocks that she would be able to use she set out to build her own house.
By the time Silver came back around he saw that Starlight had built a simple oak wood shack with some openings with fence posts being used as windows. He smiled once more as he made his way to the shack. Opening the door he saw that the floor was made of cobblestone and as he looked around he caught sight of Starlight in the process of placing done her crafting table as well as some chests and a furnace.
"Nice shack you built." he commented, causing Starlight to jump. She then turned and glared an the now chuckling crafter. "Don't surprise me like that."
"Sorry about that," Silver apologized while still chuckling, "Anyway, it looks like you've gotten all of the basics of survival taken care of." He then looked outside and noticed that the sun was beginning to set. "Looks like it's about to get dark. How about we call it a day and get something to eat. Would you like to move your bed into your new home or do you want to stay in my cabin?"
Starlight thought for a moment as she looked around her small shack. "I think I'd prefer your cabin," she replied, "I think I'll just use this for storage and crafting rather than living in it. Also after what happened yesterday I think it'll be safer in case mobs decide to come over again."
Silver nodded in understanding. "I see, well then let's head on inside. I do believe that I have a few books that have tips on how to build some unique homes. I think tomorrow we'll get started on farming followed by some combat training if we have time."
With that the two left the small shack and walked back to the cabin to get something to eat and prepare for the next day.
At the edge of the nearby forest a lone figure watched from behind a tree as the pair reentered the cabin. He had watched everything that the girl had done and was somewhat disappointed that nothing particularly interesting had happened while she went about learning the basics of survival. He was about to consider that this was a waste of time when he heard the boy mention combat training. Deciding that this would be something that his master would be interested in the spy sat down next to the tree while keeping himself from being seen from the pair inside of the cabin and proceeded to take a nap.
Author's Note
Took me a while to figure out how I wanted this chapter to go and now here we are. Not much to say about this chapter, but I think I've done a decent job on it. And now it seems that our main character's now have someone spying on them. The next chapter will be a bit more interesting as there will be some sword fighting involved, though it will start with a short bit of farming. Let me know what you guys think about this chapter, and possibly the story overall. It may be a while until I get the next chapter in so be patient as I get it done. Anyway I hope you've enjoyed the story thus far and look forward to the next chapter.
