If she’s dating somepony else, then that gossip will be tasty no matter how it resolves. And secondly, Twilight has finally found a source of romance other than her brother. Though she denies it and downplays it and shrugs it off as not-dating, Twilight’s clearly smitten with this stallion.
It’s the blush. The way her eyes smile, sort of. And the way that she hasn’t stopped chattering about him for several minutes yet.
“What does he do?” Shining asks, breaking her train.
“Oh, uh.” Twilight looks away. “He’s one of my Castle Guards.”
Cadance glances back at Sir Flamingo. Is Spirit her nickname for Sir Flamingo? When Twilight says he’s a Pegasus, is that a secret code for mare-plowing thoroughbred Earth Pony?
Shining shakes his head. “Oh, Twilight. That’s really not a great idea.”
Twilight scowls. “I knew you’d say that. That’s why I didn’t want to make a big deal about it.”
“I know you like him, and he sounds sweet, but it’s not very responsible for a pony in a position of—”
“Well, who else am I supposed to date?” Twilight asks, suddenly, nostrils flaring. She stomps the flagstones beneath her hooves. “There are no Princes in Ponyville, you know. I’m in a position of authority over every pony, you know. Not everypony gets to fall in love with their childhood sweetheart—”
“You know,” Cadance says, trying to ease some tension before somepony gets her feelings hurt. “I’m technically in a position of power over you, mister.” She pokes Shining in the rump. “Our marriage is irresponsible. Should we be keeping our illegal, scandalous relationship . . . secret?” she whispers with a smirk.
Shining gulps. “Well. Um.” He takes a slow breath and smiles gently. Apologetically. “Okay. I get it. Just . . . be careful, okay?”
Twilight rolls her eyes and resumes walking toward the palace, muttering to herself, “It’s nothing serious.”
Shining wisely lets her get a couple steps ahead, but Cadance hurries to keep up.
“You might have fooled Shining, Twilight, but I want details.” Before Twilight can protest, Cadance nods her head behind them at her personal Guard. “I expect some scandalous stories later, when we’ve got some privacy.”
Twilight doesn’t bother trying to deny anything. Instead she takes a breath and says, “Actually, Cadance . . . Speaking of privacy, can—” Twilight pauses and frowns. “Can I have some time with my brother? In private? Maybe after dinner.”
Cadance slows to a stop. She doesn’t even have to run the numbers. She already knows she’s going to let Twilight try whatever she wants with Shining. If Cadance says no, Twilight will ask why not, and then the whole thing will come out into the open, and Cadance really hopes it won’t come to that.
She glances over her shoulder. Steward is standing behind them, at a polite distance, expressionless. She hopes it won’t come to him, either.
“Er—if you’re rather not, that’s fine,” Twilight says. “I don’t want to—”
“It’s okay,” Cadance reassures her with a smile. She loves Twilight. She really does. Twilight has another stallion to long for, now. And she trusts her husband. He quite naturally doesn’t feel that way for his little sister. Not like he used to. Nothing’s going to happen. “Please be nice. He’d come and visit more frequently if he had the time. It’s not his fault.”
“That’s not—Well. Thanks.”
Cadance leans close and kisses Twilight’s forehead, just like she did when a much younger Twilight was distressed. It always calmed her down, but today it doesn’t. “But first,” Cadance says, trying to lighten the mood, “dinner. And then cakes.”
Twilight perks up. “Yay!”
Dinner is delicious, and so are the cakes. Twilight is as friendly and cheerful as ever. She jokes with Shining and Cadance, gossips about Ponyville, and listens intently when Shining and Cadance share their hard-earned wisdom from being married. Twilight reveals his birthday present, an interesting-looking book on military history that Shining hasn’t read before. It’s all very nice and uneventful. Cadance is content to let them carry the evening and focus on one another.
So while Twilight and Shining are catching up, she tries to decipher Sir Flamingo and his relationship with Twilight. At the start of the meal he took his position near the entrance, his attention flicking from Twilight to her brother to the exits and back, and hasn’t moved since. As far as Cadance can tell, Twilight never once even glances in the direction of her Guard. He was right. Twilight barely notices him. And Twilight has a special somepony back in Ponyville. Curious.
When Cadance looks back she notes with a start that Sir Flamingo is watching her. Rather than look away like any normal pony, he holds her gaze, and Cadance is surprised to find herself looking away first. No one else sees, thankfully. Throughout the rest of the evening Cadance finds herself glancing at him again and again, but never catches him looking back.
“It’s so nice here,” Twilight is saying. “Somehow you’ve made a crystal castle feel—I dunno. Cozy?” She sighs. “My castle still feels cold sometimes.”
“Are you sure you can’t stay longer, Twily?” Shining asks.
“I really can’t,” Twilight says. “There’s this filly living at the castle right now. I’m supposed to be figuring out a life for her, or something. I really don’t think I should leave her in the barracks any longer. I’ve been hearing unsettling rumors. Hey—” she says, spearing a forkful of cake and pointing it at them, “you guys don’t want a filly, do you?”
Shining coughs and sets down his fork before he can drop it.
Cadance catches his eye and says, “Do you wanna?”
He shakes his head. “You’re the mother.”
Twilight perks up, her mouth full of cake. “Mmrr?”
Cadance smiles at Twilight. “Shining and I are having a baby. We’ll have our own filly.”
Twilight’s eyes bulge for a second, and her magic fizzles, dropping her fork. “Rry?” she asks.
Shining blushes and rubs the back of his neck, but he’s got a goofy smile on his face. He nods.
Twilight gasps and chokes on her cake.
“Twilight!” Cadance exclaims, jumping out of her chair.
Twilight thwacks herself in the chest, coughs cake crumbs everywhere, waves off her Guard, inhales again, coughs again, then squeals, “You’re having a baby! Cadey! Ahhh!” Twilight scrambles from her chair and throws herself at Shining and Cadance. The three of them topple into a pile of limbs and wings and chairs.
“I’m gonna be an aunt! I’m gonna have a niece! You’re gonna have a baby!” Twilight sings, squeezing them both. “Oh, sweet Celestia! Congratulations!”
“Twilight—” Shining gasps.
“Can’t—urp—can’t breathe!” Cadance wheezes.
Twilight gasps and lets go, leaps back. “Oh! I’m so sorry. Did I hurt you? Oh! You have to be more careful! What are you doing out and about? Shining!” she scolds. “Why are you letting her out of bed? You should be waiting on her at all times!”
“I already do, basically,” Shining grumbles.
Cadance climbs to her hooves and dusts herself off. “It’s okay, Twilight. I’m not that fragile. And I don’t need to be waited on.”
“Oh, right. Of course not.” Twilight dances anxiously from hoof to hoof then rushes up to Cadance’s side and asks, breathlessly, “Can I feel?”
“Sure.”
Twilight hovers her hoof over Cadance’s belly, hesitates, and carefully touches her. After a few moments she frowns. “I don’t feel anything,” Twilight says, quietly. “What does that mean? Is something wrong?”
“It’s far too soon for that, Little Shake,” Cadance says. “Right now you’re just groping me. Try again in a few months.” She tousles Twilight’s mane a little and smiles. Sometimes Cadance forgets how young Twilight still is.
“Oh.” A pause. Twilight pulls her hoof back and scratches the back of her neck. “I, uh, I guess I don’t really know that much about . . . all of that.” She looks at the ground. “I’ve never really thought about it.”
“Not even with your Pegasus friend back home?” Shining asks.
Twilight sputters and stammers, “Well—That’s just—You see—”
Shining laughs.
Twilight rights her chair and sits with a thump. “Wow. A baby. You’re going to be parents. That’s—it’s so—”
“Wonderful?” Shining prompts, beaming.
“Yeah. Wonderful.”
Cadance doesn’t need her magic to feel the clouds settling over Twilight’s mood, now that reality starts setting in. A baby is a milestone, and Twilight is still miles away, even if this Spirit stallion winds up being the one. Never mind that Twilight’s far too young to be worrying about foals. Cadance can see the spiral starting. But before she can say anything, Shining steps up to Twilight and puts a hoof on her shoulder.
“Twilight, it’s okay. There’s no rush, you know.”
Twilight looks up at him, blinks, then looks at her lap, rubbing her hooves. “W—well,” she stammers. “Congratulations. I love you guys. And I can’t wait to meet your little foal.”
“Neither can we,” Shining says.
“Thank you, Twilight,” Cadance says, plastering a smile on her face.
Twilight mirrors it.
Shining grins like an idiot.
Twilight takes another deep breath. Any hope that Twilight would give up her incestuous pursuits upon hearing of her impending aunthood is quickly dashed. Avoiding eye contact with Cadance, she casually asks Shining if they can chat a little, in private.
That was an hour ago, and Shiny still hasn’t returned.
Now, in her bedroom, lying on her side, Cadance has since spent most of her time staring at the wall, trying not to imagine just what Twilight wants to talk to Shining about—what she wants to do with Shining. Twilight is tenacious and doesn’t give up without a fight. It doesn’t help that Shining Armor can’t easily say no to his sister. And Cadance is cursed with an imagination that often gets away from her:

She slides off her bed, surprised at how shaky her legs are, and heads for the door.
Before she can reach for the doorknob it rattles and opens. The silhouette of a stallion appears, trying to be quiet. Built like a Castle Guard.

“Cadence?” the stallion asks.
Shining.
Cadance exhales with relief, and watches Shining peer into the dark of their room, his eyes still adjusting. Head lowered, ears flat, dull expression on his face. Not how the recently-fucked would look, but also not how a birthday pony should look. Something has happened.
When he sees Cadance he freezes, then stands upright and forces a smile and asks, “Honey. Still up?”
“Of course. I couldn’t let my birthday boy go to bed without giving him his present.” She can feel the stress radiating off of him. Whatever happened, it’s been an emotional night for him. He needs her. She touches his chest, then reaches around him for a hug. “ . . . Shiny?”
He hugs back, melts into her embrace. “Sorry, babe. I’m just tired.”
“You poor stallion. Exhausted already? You must be getting old.”
He smiles weakly and shrugs. “That’s what happens on a birthday.”
“How is Twilight?” Cadance asks.
“She’s—” he purses his lips, aware he’s this close to lying to her. “Well, she’s not great. I think she’s having a tough time as a Princess. And she’s a little nervous about your pregnancy. But it’s okay. We talked.”
“What’s wrong?” she asks, and then, when he doesn’t answer, “Shining?”
He hesitates. “Cadance, dear. I know we promised to be open with each other, but the things she shared in confidence—I’m sorry. I can’t break her confidence. Even for you.”
“Shining, you’re not the only pony that cares about her. I know more about her mistakes than you could imagine. I want to help, if I can.”
“It’s not that simple—”
“What did she do?”
He exhales. “She kissed me.” He looks away, unable to meet her eyes, even though he’s not at fault.
Cadance deflates. At least Twilight is still predictable.
“Please don’t be mad at her,” he says.
“Oh?” she huffs. “Should I be happy at her instead? Or mad at somepony else?”
“It’s nopony’s fault. You of all ponies should know you can’t control your feelings.”
“But she can control how she acts on those feelings.”
“But—”
“Did she come to apologise? To clear the air? Or did she try to seduce a husband, a brother, and a father-to-be?”
Shining kicks at the floor. “She only just found out that last bit.”
Cadance takes another calming breath. “Somepony has to set boundaries. Sneaking around like this? Trying to take advantage of you when you’re alone? This isn’t healthy.”
“I told her—”
“Did you tell her no?”
“I was nicer about it.”
“I’ll talk to her. Filly to filly. We can work this out without hurting anypony’s feelings, but she needs to move on with her own love life.”
“Cadance,” Shining says, gently putting his hoof on her shoulder. He looks into her eyes and says with polite authority, “I have already worked this out. She needs time to herself, not ponies ganging up on her.”
Cadance scoffs, shrugs free of his hoof. “Nopony is ganging up on her. I’m not going to yell at her.” She gulps, feeling a little guilty herself now. “I’m worried about her. She may need some filly time, and you can’t give her that.”
He shakes his head, and falls back onto the bed. “I guess not. Please be nice to her. You can get pretty possessive when it suits you.”
She rolls her eyes, then holds her hoof up. “I’ll just talk to her,” she says, before realizing this is the hoof she has just covered in her juices. She stomps it back down before he can notice. “I promise.”
Shining exhales, and faces the ceiling. “I had no idea she still felt this way,” he admits.
Shining is a wonderful pony. He has a head for strategies and games. He can command an army with the same care and patience he shows in his private life. And he’ll make a loving, nurturing father. But sometimes Cadance wonders if he doesn’t need some sense slapped into him. “Really.”
He shrugs. “I thought she’d grown out of it.”
“Shiny . . . ” Cadance sighs. “Fillies never grow out of their first love. Most find another stallion, and their feelings change as they grow older, but a mare never forgets her first.” She looks over her shoulder, imagining where Twilight’s bedroom is in relation to theirs, where Twilight is probably hiding. “And Twilight hasn’t found somepony else. Certainly nopony as kind and loving and considerate as you.”
This brings a smile to Shining’s face. “Thanks.”
Cadance crawls onto the bed and settles beside him. “Hey,” she says, smiling at him.
“Hey,” he says, a genuine smile finally appearing. He reaches out to stroke her chin, then her stomach.
She kisses him, and he kisses back. Gently at first, but then desperately. Cadance almost laughs. For all her qualities, Twilight doesn’t have that firsthoof experience with adult Shining. Even if Twilight did try something, there’s no way she could steal Shining away. She’s an amateur. She needs time alone with him and has to abuse his unconditional love for her.

She bites, eliciting a gasp. “Or . . . is it the two of us having our wicked, naughty way with you?”

How to Discipline Your Little Sister
Cadance marches to up Twilight’s room and knocks. It doesn’t matter how late it is; Twilight won’t be asleep yet anyways. “Twilight? We need to talk.”
No response.
Cadance purses her lips. Twilight is almost certainly inside. Probably sulking. Improper behavior or otherwise, nopony likes being rejected, especially by someone as special as Shining Armor, and it’s even worse because Twilight can’t simply hate him and move on.
She says, softly, “Twilight, I’m coming in.”
Just as she reaches for the handle, Twilight’s magic blooms and sizzles over the door, unlocking and opening it for Cadance.
Cadance steps inside. At first the room looks empty, except for Sir Flamingo, standing still by the door. “Twilight?” she asks, looking around.
Twilight’s voice mumbles, “Are you here to tell me to leave?”
“Oh, Twilight. Of course not,” she says, stepping inside. It’s a mess. The blankets are on the floor in a pile. Her clothes hang out of her luggage, shoved up against a far wall. She’s completely ignored the closet and armoire. It’s familiar enough that Cadance can’t help but smile. Filly Twilight always was messy.
Cadance closes the door behind her, wondering where exactly Twilight is hiding. “I’m here to talk.”
“You’re—you’re not mad at me?” Twilight asks.
“I’m not mad at you,” Cadance lies, peeking in the ensuite bathroom and checking the armoire. She can’t see Twilight, but she can feel her presence. Twilight’s emotions are somewhat similar to Shining’s: shame, regret, frustration. Repressed arousal. Cadance looks questioningly at Sir Flamingo, but he stands resolute. How unhelpful.
“You should be. Do you know what I did earlier?”
There! Cadance spots a flash of purple and pink mane between the closet doors. Twilight is hiding in possibly the silliest place ever. “You kissed my husband.”
“I kissed my brother,” Twilight corrects, glaring at the floor. “And now he hates me.”
“He doesn’t hate you, Twilight. He loves you. Just . . . not the same way he loves me.”
Twilight huffs, then reaches forward, tries to squeeze herself out from her little nook. Cadance steps back, giving her room. She shimmies her shoulders free and falls forward, landing with a dull thud on the carpet, and climbs to all fours.
“I’m not in the mood,” Twilight sniffs, walking past her to her dresser. “It was just a kiss. I won’t do it again. There. No need to worry.”
Cadance shakes her head in disbelief. “Twilight, you can’t try to fuck my husband and then complain that you’re not in the mood.”
Twilight gasps, whirls around and stares at Cadance with big eyes. “I didn’t . . . ” The denial fades into a mumble. Suddenly she can’t look at Cadance. Twilight knows that she can’t hide how she really feels from Cadance, and that she’s a terrible liar anyways. After a few seconds she says, “I’m sorry.”
“You asked Shining to give you a baby.”
A small nod. “I’m sorry.”
Cadance sighs. “This happened last year, too. You showed up, put the moves on Shining, then hurried home. Yes, of course I knew,” she says, when Twilight looks startled. “We tell each other everything.”
“Oh. Um. I’m sorry.”
“Why? Why ask him that? Why would you think he’d pick up and leave his life?”
“I wasn’t planning on it. It just popped out. I’m sorry!”
“Stop—” Cadance snaps, before taking a deep breath. “Stop saying you’re sorry. Just tell me what happened.”
Twilight stares at the floor, wringing her forehooves. For a few moments she doesn’t say anything. Finally she takes a deep breath, then sets her face and asks, “Did he ever tell you what we did?”
“He said you kissed him—”
“I mean years ago. When we were brother and sister.” She cocks an arrogant eyebrow. “Before he met you.”
Of course he told Cadance. Obviously. It’s been years. Still, Cadance doesn’t mind letting Twilight talk herself into a corner. It’s the only way she’ll learn. “Let me guess: you used to kiss him then, too?”
“Yes. We kissed. He had hormones, and I loved him. It happened so naturally. We kissed as often we could get away with it. When our parents left us alone, or after they went to bed. Sometimes when they were in the other room I would tease him, and he couldn’t do anything about it.” She smiles a tiny smile. “We didn’t even know we were supposed to use our tongues at first.”
Shining and Twilight are curled together on her cute little bedspread, surrounded by stuffed animals. Twilight giggles when he kisses her cheek, then gasps when he licks her neck. His body is so warm.
It’s all Cadance can do to keep a straight face. She can’t stop the adorable imagery Twilight evokes. It’s cute now, but Cadance knows where it leads.

Twilight circles around him, steps up beside him, and bumps his hip with hers. “You know, Shiny,” she whispers in his ear, watching Cadance as she says it, “I actually have thought about it. A lot. One day I’d like to have a little filly, too.”
Shining gasps so hard Cadance worries he’s about to pass out, flicking his tail down and standing up straight.
Twilight slides her gaze over to Cadance and asks, casually, “My birthday is coming up soon. Will you both come to visit me then? I’ll make sure we have plenty of cakes.”
Cadance just laughs. “We’ll be there.”
