He sighed, Governing the Roman Empire, it was hell, papers, more papers, and more papers came time after time, the
Senate helped in no way, they just gave him title after title trying to please him to escape his possible wrath, but even so, he was satisfied with everything he achieved so far, even though it was very tedious at times, and much more difficult than his former job as governor, these were the consequences for his victory against Pompey....
He sighed again as he finished writing another sheet and set it aside.
He missed the times of glory, when he led the army to victory, or in defeat, it didn't matter, it could be dangerous, it could be disturbing, but it was exciting, to fight, to lead, to win.
No, he didn't like war, even though it was part of most of his life, fighting was an easy and glorious way to achieve riches and recognition, and now that he has accomplished much more than a few could only dream of acquiring....
He needed to continue with the work, the people of Rome depended on him now, they loved the reforms he did, which were obvious things he wanted to do for a long time.
Reform would please and help the poor of the rich who took advantage with their massive farmlands, greater inspection of grain supply's, full citizenship for the Gauls and many other reforms that obviously drove senators crazy even if necessary, improved the calendar and managed to put the Senate on a tight leash.
His life was great and very successful, but he still had huge ambitions, he was already preparing new expeditions to the Rhine and Parthia, Rome was gigantic, but he believed that he could still increase its power and territories.
However....
Some things has been bothering him....
Spurrina, one of the priests, kept alerting him weekly to 'Beware the ides of march!'......
Why? that was the same month when he was leaving Rome, but was something going to happen? a rebellion? Sudden invasion? He did not know....
And recently, Cassius was also acting very strange, one of his inner circle and trusted advisor, when they had a meeting, he stuttered, trembled, and looked totally pale.
Caesar didn't know why he acted in such a way, maybe he had an illness, or he was worried about the future campaign , or even he could be looking forward to governing future provinces....
Something was wrong, Really wrong, but he didn't know what.
A door banging open, and a door creep slowly closing, Caesar, quickly lowered the paper from his desk and looked to the side to see who had come in, looking closely, he recognized the person, and slowly smiled, rising from his table and walking slowly until the new arrival with open arms.
"Calpurnia! My love!"
The figure would smile, it was Caesar's wife, and one of the few things that soothed him in moments of anger and frustration, she walked over to him and hugged him, both happy to be in each other's arms.
"Sorry for being late... the market was very crowded"
Caesar then came out of the embrace looking at her with a disapproving expression on his face,.
"Calpur, we have servants for that! You don’t need to take more of your time to stay in these huddled places."
She just chuckled with that, shaking her head from side to side negatively.
"Caesar, just because we are rich does not mean that we have to stand around like those fat senators, I like to walk around the city and keep in shape!"
The dictator laughed as he kissed his wife's forehead as they walked into the living room of the residence.
"You never changed, never since the day I bumped you at the entrance to the Senate"
He said as they sat and he ran his hand through her hair with a warm smile, while she just looked at him unimpressed
"What do you want now?"
His smile was immediately undone, with him looking to the side in shame and chuckling.
"You wound me."
She would return with a laugh
"I Know you very well Gaius Julius Caesar, flattery will not work"
I Hate when she does that
He would sigh and start scratching the back of his neck in shame.
"Our honeymoon will have to be postponed....."
Her smile would immediately disappear, and her face would close in an expression of sadness
"W-why...? You promised me that when the civil war be over and if everything calmed down we would have a few weeks of vacation, twice already! And your expedition will be a few weeks by now!"
A guilty expression would pass over Caesar's face as his wife hugged herself, he would put his hand on her shoulder and squeeze for comfort.
"I am sorry dear.... Its because the Senate summoned me to another meeting on the issue of debt abolition... again... and it cannot be postponed anymore...."
She would sigh and hug him, holding back the crying and sniffling a little, Caesar would return, still feeling enormous guilt for not giving the attention she deserved.
"I-i know they need you.... I-i.... J-just wanted a l-little m-more time with you...."
He would hug her tighter while she cried, kissing her head
"Shhh, i know, i know."
Caesar walked the streets of Rome on his way to the Senate with his Pretorian Guard while cursing himself, He was an absent husband, and he knew it, but Rome needed him aswell....
That was what he kept saying to himself, and the east campaign could no longer be delayed, he had already planned for months, and even if he loved spending more time with her, he needed keep his priorities first and pleasure second.
While he was still in his thoughts during the walk, he overheard someone pushing alot of people while passing through the surrounding crowd with force, that caught the attention of the Praetorians, who kept themselves around Caesar forming a perimeter, and blocked the passage of the intruder.
"Caesar! Caesar! I have something important to you!"
He gave a slight sigh, obviously, what was left? another one bringing some advice? or some poorly studied reform for him to make? or maybe just another letter from a nobleman asking for favors... who knows.....
"I am busy now friend, sorry but later i-"
"It is of urge importance! it is for you read, and you only!"
He mentally sighted but needed, signaling to the Pretorians to make room for him to pass, where he delivered a papyrus letter.
"No one but you, can read this."
And when he caught it, he nooded to the man, the Pretorians pushed the man away while Caesar started walking again, ignoring the man's protests, and handing the papyrus to one of his guards.
"Remind me to read later."
Little did Caesar know, that that letter could have saved his life, explaining all the conspiracy that was going on and how deep it was.
Caesar was at the entrance of the Senate building, ordering as every meeting, his guards to stay at the entrance of the building, since as meetings are prohibited weapons, they should stay out.
What he found strange, was that of his right arm, Marc Antony, had been left out, he did not know where he was, however, he threw those thoughts aside, and entered the senate, and that was not the only thing he was wondering, many senators were acting...
Strange.....
They were very tense, he knew that the abolition of debts was not popular, and that some started one argument in the entrance, but that took it to another level, he thought while laughing lightly.
He sat in his special chair in the middle of the ones assigned to the Consuls (Governors of Rome), signaling for the debate to initialize.
However, again, they began to act strangely, his friend, Cassius, slowly stood up and walked towards him, like many other senators, who walked slowly, and stood all around him.
And then, one of them, Tillius, asked a very strange and sudden question
"Will you pardon my brother?"
He looked with a raised eyebrow, his brother was an Ex-Pompeian, who fought at the behest of his greatest enemy, and who fled at the end of the war, he hesitated a little, but looked at him and replied.
"Your brother has shown no contrition, or remorse whatsoever, then, no, i won't pardon your brother anytime soon."
What he didn't realize, was that it was just a distraction, without him being able to do anything, his cloak was pulled hard from behind, and a cut was made on his shoulder, making him grunt in pain.
Holding the attacker's arm, he looked back and could see who his attacker was.
It was Casca, his childhood friend, with a dagger, trying to stab him in the back.
He was in total shock, his best friend, childhood friend, and brother-in-arms, tried to kill him.
"CASCA??? WHAT ARE YOU DOING???"
He screamed, they stayed like that for a while, in a tug-of-war, Caesar trying to get loose and Casca, holding him still while trying to pierce Caesar's belly, the whole senate was in total shock, no one doing anything, just looking at it, all gaping, in a trance, until Casca shouted something in Greek.
"Adelfós! Voíthisé me!" (Brother! Help me!)
This broke the trance, Tietidus, then ran to help Casca, causing the Senate to explode with movement, many senators ran shouting Caesar's name, only to be stopped by the conspirators who formed a perimeter to not let anyone help him.
Caesar broke free, and fell from his chair, in front of Cassius, one who was part of his personal circle, his best friend, who quickly made a quick cut on his face, making him stagger backwards, holding his cut face still in huge shock.
He then bumped into Tillius who then stabbed him between the ribs, then reeling again, he was stabbed again, and again, and again, falling more and more to the ground with each new stab.
Everyone he forgave for a better future for Rome, betrayed him, everything he built, fought, all those policies he did for the people, everything was collapsing around him, he didn’t die in glory, he didn’t die along with the various soldiers that he failed in many of his battles, that tormented him for decades.....
And neither besides his dear wife....
Calpurnia....
I'm sorry.....
His world darkened, and he faded from consciousness.
Caesar woke up.
It hurts a lot, his body looked like it had been pierced by thousands of spears and had miraculously survived to tell the story, he struggled to open his eyes, but he couldn't, his body just didn't want to answer, then, voices .
"Who is he...?"
He couldn't reason properly, but he could still understand the voices,
I died?
"A likely officer, though, I have never seen him in my life."
How?? didn't they recognize him? Are they Gauls....?
No..... Gauls don't understand Latin....
"But it's one of ours, look at the uniform! and he has wings! Different from the other tribes!"
What?? Wings?
And then, he felt huge pain in a disproportionate part of his back that he had never felt before, they were touching it.
"We better take him to the Centurion Flash Magnus, he will know what to do."
Flash Magnus? Who...
But he couldn't hear anymore, because the voices start to distort, and he lost consciousness again, still not knowing what the future held for him.
