Happy Birthday, Twilight!
Sweet Twilight (dun dun dun)
"Is everything in place?" I ask the guardspony who was assisting me secure a large banner in place. Today, everything has to be right. Today is her birthday. Today there is no room for error.
"Everything is good to go for tonight's party, Your Majesty," the guard replies with a salute.
"Outstanding. Now I really hope she likes it."
"Oh? What's this?" A new voice causes me to turn around just as I finish securing the banner. I find that it belongs to Celestia, my older sister and Princess of Equestria. She looks around the room, admiring the decorations. "You've done a good job here, Luna."
"Thank you, Tia," I reply. "I wish to make today special for her."
"Oh, don't you fret too much. I'm sure she'll love it."
"Of course." I glance at the time, seeing that it is well past when I had intended to wake my marefriend. Whoops, slight mishap. Perhaps this can be amended. With a curt farewell, I spread my wings and glide beneath the ceilings of the castle to the room I share with her, alighting in front of the door. I take a deep breath and open it slowly, as not to disturb her. I find her still asleep, the covers half on. Her wings are spread, the feathers ruffled. She's snoring ever so softly, a small bit of drool on the pillow.
The sight of her sleeping self is the most adorable thing I have ever laid my eyes on. I almost feel bad for waking her, yet still I trot over to her side of the bed and stretch a hoof over her figure, rubbing her back. "Good morning, love," I whisper into her ear.
She yawns and stretches, eyelids slowly opening to reveal her beautifully violet eyes. "Good morning, Lulu," she yawns, blinking her eyes a few times to clear her vision.
"Happy birthday, Twilight," I say with a smile, holding out my hoof and helping her to her hooves. She yawns a thank-you, smiling in reply as I lead her to the balcony. She leans into me, sighing contentedly as I begin to preen her wings. We stay together on the balcony for some time, enjoying each other's company and taking turns preening each other's wings. Soon we head inside for breakfast, and when she sees the decorations, Twilight locks me in a tight embrace.
"Oh, Luna, it's beautiful!" she exclaims. "Thank you so much!"
I'm incredibly happy that she likes it so much. That's all I want; for her to enjoy her special day. She and I have a hearty breakfast together before spending the day in the gardens. As we lay beneath the shade of a tree with our wings around each other, I realise just how grateful I am to have her in my life.
She rolls over and faces me, a smile on her muzzle. "Aren't clouds fascinating? I mean, they a visible mass of liquid droplets, floating up there, positioned just so by the pegasi. I wonder what it must be like to map out the clouds. I would love to organise them someday."
I nod in acknowledgement. "It must be a lot of work. True, the pegasus ponies do have quite a knack for it, don't they?"
"Of course." She rolls back over, sighing as she scoots closer to me.
"I love you, Twilight. You mean the world to me." I wrap my wing around her, holding her close.
"I love you too, Luna. You're the best."
I lift her in my aura onto my chest, placing her hooves in mine. Suddenly she leans in, kissing me right on the muzzle. She pulls away after a short while, gazing into my eyes. I smile at her before laying her down beside me again, once more wrapping my wing around her. I could easily spend eternity with her like this, yet there is still that party we have planned...
Around dinner time, we sit down in the decorated room to her favourite meal, Celestia and Twilight's friends having joined us as well. The party is in full swing, music provided courtesy of Vinyl Scratch, professional disk jockey. We all hold flutes of cider aloft in our magic auras, giving a toast to Twilight in celebration of her special day. "To Twilight!" Celestia and I exclaim.
"Happy birthday, Twilight," Celestia says, smiling at her faithful student.
"Happy birthday!" I echo.
"Thanks, you two," Twilight replies. "Thank you so much."
We pass the time by talking about everything from books to royal duties, and soon it is time for the next event planned for this lovely day. Personally, I didn't plan it, but Celestia insisted it would be fun, so I decided to go along with it. However, I find myself dreading karaoke.
My goodness, can Minuette sing! She sings beautifully, but not as good as my Twilight. As she finishes the song with Lyra and Pinkie Pie, I am handed the microphone. I motion for Vinyl, who is at my side in seconds. I whisper in her ear what song I wish to sing, and she nods, suppressing a laugh. A few brief moments after she trots off, the song's opening bass notes begin, followed by climaxing trumpets. The lights dim, and a pattern is soon formed on the dance floor. I sing my way through the first verse, reaching the bridge. This is where Twilight joins me on stage, and takes my hoof in hers, joining in song.
"Hooves, touching hooves,
Reaching out...
Touching me, touching youuuu....."
Soon the entire hall is echoing with voices, singing the refrain. What they don't know is that I altered the lyrics a tiny bit, yet Twilight hears them, blushing in response. We're in the second verse now, the entire room singing along at the top of their lungs. We all sway to the rhythm, singing the refrain once more. During the instrumental break, I say to the audience, "This time, let us replace the word Mareoline with Twilight!"
And that is exactly what happens.
A few more rounds of karaoke later, and the dance floor is opened. Ponies dance to the beat of popular songs for hours, dancing the night away. After a line dance to the hit song Hoofloose, Vinyl gets on the mike. "Alright everypony," the blue-maned DJ says. "This is our last song for tonight!" She sets a record on the table and the song begins, the light pattern slowing down. I find Twilight, and bow to her, spreading my wings. "Doest thou wish to dance?" I ask.
"Oh, Luna, of course!" she enthusiastically replies. I take her hoof and lead her out to the dance floor, where we engage in a slow waltz. We make a pattern on the floor, suddenly surrounded by everypony in attendance.
"You know," I whisper, "I've always wanted to slow dance with you."
"I love you so much, Luna," she says as she strokes my cheek with a wing. "Thank you for making today so special."
"I love you too, Twilight. Forever and always." And soon we are locked in a passionate kiss, savouring every moment...
