Celestia sat Twilight down, they were in the garden of the castle to have a talk while having a nice lunch.
"Now listen closely. I don't want to say more than I have to...But since you're the next ruler of Equestria you deserve to know this." she took a deep breathe as she pulled out a banged up book. Twilight cocked her head as she opened the book. It wasn't like any book she had seen in the library, even when she was in the restricted section. It kind of looked like an old fairy tale book. Its dark purple cover had this strange shine to it, despite its obvious age.

"Why does it look like that?" she mumbled, studying the cover some more before snapping out of her trance. Celestia flicked her eyes over to Twilight and then over to the few guards. She waved her hoof, shooing them away.
"Now let me tell you the story..."

Another day of school for...but this was no normal day, it was the day every alicorn goes through, graduation day. It was the day you were sent somewhere to spread the land. Even if Zero was no alicorn she still had to attend, she was known as the failure of all of the school, or even the kingdom. She wasn't able to get her wings. While she had a cutiemark, she didn't quite know what it meant, as it was just a large black "X".

She didn't mind having to go. She had a bit of a plan..she had recently developed a spell that sucks the magic from a pony. And she was going to use it on her dear 'friends'. If she gathered enough magic from them she would be able to truly make herself an alicorn. Then she would reign upon what would soon become Equestria.
"Sunbright!" she called out for her sister, the eldest.

Sunbright walked in, she was a tall, luscious, pink haired pony. Her crystal blue eyes looked at her younger sister
"What is it now?" she sighed, folding her wings with a frown. "I don'y have time for you to be constantly pestering me. I have more important things to do." she grumbled. Zero blinked slowly, rolling her eyes.
"I just need help getting ready, jeez, no need to be such a dick head about it." she snapped, lifting her saddle bag with her her blue magic.

Her older sister rolled mumbled a few things under her breathe.
"What do you need help with?" she walked into the room, looking around at the mess.
"Just my hair..Since you've always been good with doing my hair." she smiled, trying to lighten the mood.

Years had passed since Zero and Sunbright's last interaction. Zero had established a new land, just for her, Equestria. She was the only alicorn so she was superior to everypony else. She had made a new friend though, she was a small orange earth pony, an absolutely stunning one might I add.

Zero walked with her marefriend, a wing wrapped around her.
"Apple Pearl.." she began, leaning towards her face with a loving smile "I love you.."
The smaller pony smiled and nuzzled Zero
"Awe, I love you too.." she grinned, giving her an affectionate kiss on the cheek..

Those kind of nights were always her favorite.

But they didn't last long.

Apple Pearl had died.

Zero kept cooped up in the basement of the castle. She cried and cried. Just never ending grief. She couldn't handle it. But she managed to stay alive. That's because she had met a new friend. The Pony of Shadows. Now normally when you hear that name you'd think of the one that Stygian had become, but this was so much more powerful. The dark power it gave had eventually engulfed her, leaving nothing but an evil empty shell. This would have been the magic that created Nightmare Moon, now reformed to Princess Luna.

She used her dark magic to reign terror over Equestria, even killing her sister, Sun Bright, in the process. Many had lost hope, they believed that nothing could save them, Especially when Zero went off and violently murdered anypony who defied her law. She would usually gut them or crush their heads. That was until her eldest daughter, Lunar Rain stood up against her. They had a violent fight, Lunar almost lost her life but was able to defeat her mother by sealing her away in a gemstone, which she soon locked away in the caves under Canterlot. About every twenty years the decedents of Zero must keep her away by gathering up half of their magic and at least one alicorn must be there to help with the ritual.

Nobody is sure where Lunar Rain went after that. Or any of her children for that fact, many say that they eventually died off. But others have said otherwise, saying that they have met or seen them....

"And that's all that's in here.." Celestia finished, setting the book down. "The rest of the pages were burnt by me and Luna to keep others from finding dark spells.." Twilight looked up at her mentor
"What will happen when you and Luna retire and can't go help with the ritual? Would I have to go? I don't know if I could exactly do that" She went on, rambling about how she wasn't ready.

"Twilight, Listen..you won't have to do any of that.." she assured, running a hoof through her ~~lovers~~ students hair.
"You'll be perfectly fine. We'll be able to go for you," she pulled the smaller pony to her side, nuzzling her head with a small smile. "We'll go until we die...that's the only thing you won't have to do for us until we die..and that'll be a long time away.."

After the events that took place during lunch Twilight couldn't get the idea that she'd have to preform such magic in the future, she knew it would be awhile until the sisters passed but...how would she even be able to do that magic, let alone get over their death! All she knew is that she would get out of it somehow...And that's why she was under the damned Canterlot castle, in those caves she was in with Cadance all that time ago.

Twilight looked around for the area and saw it... Large grey-ish pillars towering over her...
