The Dangers of Dying
The Dnagers of Dying
Load Full StoryTwilight sniffed to herself, sitting on her bed. Her face was stained with tears from the crying she had just finished. And she couldn't take it anymore. She had learned that by becoming an Alicorn, she become powerful. But she wasn't immortal- yet. In a few days, she would be. By the time her friends die of age, she would be. And she would have to live an eternity without them. Twilight did not want that. Right now she was mortal.
"H-hey Spike?" she called out weakly.
"Yeah?" came a reply from the hall.
"Can you- sorry. May you get me some cyanide please?" Twilight asked. There was a silence behind the doors. Twilight shook her head, stopping when she remembered Spike couldn't see her. "It's for a science experiment. Actually, bring the chemistry set to the library please. And maybe some cookies and milk."
Spike let out a relieved sigh. "Sure thing Twilight! I'll see you there." Twilight had been acting odd most of the day, after Celestia let loose the "out living your best friends" bit. He was concerned that Twilight would try to hurt herself out of grief. Now, it seemed like she was going to distract herself with simple science.
Twilight heard footsteps move away. She didn't bother wiping away her tears. She instead, tried to think of every book she's read. She had read every book in town. So no need to delay. She stifled a sob and put on a smile. She headed to the library.
"Hey Twilight. I got you some chocolate chip cookies, and fresh milk. They're on the coffee table beside your big fireplace chair." Spike smiled. He set the chemistry set on a nearby table. "Do you need anything else?"
Twilight shook her head as she sat down in the chair. "No. I'm good."
Spike gave a nod, and walked to leave. He stopped as he reached the door way. "Celestia sent a new book for you."
Twilight sat up. "New book?"
"Yeah! Let me go get it for you real quick." Spike quickly left. A few minutes later, he returned with a book. He set it gently on the coffee table. "She said it would help sooo... bye!" Spike quickly ran out of the room.
Twilight arched an eyebrow. Using her magic, she filled a beaker with chemicals, making cyanide. She set it beside her, and munched on a cookie. "The- wait what?" Twilight peered closely at the cover. "'The' de-dan- 'Dnagers of Dying'. What!?" She cracked the book open.
Good day chum! Chances are you're wanting to kill yourself.
Twilight stopped. For some odd reason, she read it in an overly British accent. She shook her head and continued reading,
Good day chum! Chances are you're wanting to kill yourself. So, let me explain the dnagers of dying. First off, demons. Confused? Let me explain. For what ever reason you wish to kick the bucket, don't. You may become a slave or servant to a demon, or something. That's reasonable, right? Right.
Twilight looked at the book with skepticism. She didn't want a silly book to read last..
Now then, probably should separate this into chapters. "Hold on to your patootie, we're going in!"
Twilight pulled away from the book. It just spoke. "I- D-did you just speak?" The book said nothing. "Do you speak if I read you?" Again, the book said nothing.
Twilight cleared her throat and continued reading. After, a talking book was interesting.
Chapter One: Why?
Yes, that chapter title has a single question. And now "You must question it yourself. Why do you wish to die? What purpose? What reason? Because I don't care. Yes, you heard me right. Or read me right, I guess. Unless I'm reading this to you myself. Which would be odd. As I'm long gone from age. Anyway, we're- I'm- getting off topic." What reason have you for wanting to kill yourself? To protect someone else? Because nobody cares? Or because you think people are better off without you? "Because if you don't have the will to live, you shouldn't have the will to die." Just saying. Or writing.
Twilight munched on a cookie. "So... You speak if I'm reading you. But only certain parts? Or is that random?" She reached for her drink with her magic. The door clicked open. Twilight paid no attention. "Who even wrote you?" For some odd reason, she found she wanted to live a bit longer, to finish the book. She raised the glass to her lips, only to get tackled and knocked out of her chair by Spike.
"Don't do it Twilight!"
The two rolled across the ground. "Hey! What's the big idea... Spike?" Twilight had landed flat on her back, with Spike on top of her. This gave who the perfect view of his tearful eyes.
"Please don't do it, Twilight. Please." Spike's voice came out begging. "Please don't." His face was full of sadness. "Please..."
Twilight hugged Spike, sitting up. Her face was of concern and confusion as Spike sobbed into her chest. She looked around the room while patting Spike on the back. "There there." After a few minutes, she pulled away from Spike, gently rubbing his back. He was still sitting in her lap. "There there. Spike? What did I do that made you so sad?" She tilted Spike's head up, so she could see his face.
"You- *hic* you- *hic*-" Spike tried a few more times to speak, before pointing behind himself, towards the fireplace. Twilight tilted her head to look, and saw the beaker of cyanide. It had spilt over and had ruined the carpet.
"Oh... I honestly did not mean to reach for that." Twilight let out an awkward chuckle. "Sorry for scaring you Spike. I really didn't mean to."
Spike let out a few sniffs, before looking at the mess as well. He then turned back to face Twilight. "D-does that mean you're not killing yourself?"
Twilight stared. Then sighed. "You wanna read this book with me?"
"Twilight. Answer me."
Twilight let out another sigh. "I can't right now, because I'm not sure." She looked away. "Now you answer me."
Spike for a moment was confused, before realizing she was referring to reading the book with her. He softly let out a sigh. If Twilight was going to... off herself, they may as well do something they enjoy. "Fine. But you better stay alive long enough for us to have some cake afterwards."
Twilight kissed his forehead. "Okay Spike. Okay." She went back in her chair, setting Spike next to her.
"But regardless of will, the question is, Why?" Is there a loved one who has died, whom you can't live without? Or is there someone who will die soon, who loves you greatly, and you can't bear to see them die?
Spike stared wide eyed at the talking book.
Please take a moment and consider. There is so very little time for them left, but they wish to spend the last of their days with you. "I know this is hard for you to accept. But if you perish, your own friends will be saddened. And-"
The book suddenly snapped shut and flew into the fire place. A fiery version of Sombra formed. "You didn't- Oh ho hoho! You have change your mind, and we didn't even make it through the first chaptre!" The flaming Sombra transformed into the book once more, and flew out the window with a loud shatter.
Twilight and Spike stared. "I-" Twilight started, before Spike gave her a bear-hug. The two remained silent for a minute.
"...You're not?" Spike finally asked, his voice full of hope.
"I won't." Twilight answered. The hug tightened. "Come on. We should get some sleep."
"...Can I sleep with you tonight?" Spike asked.
"Yes. Yes you can." Twilight answered. Twilight and Spike got off the chair, when the wall blew up.
Standing in the destroyed wall were the three alicorns, Cadence, Luna, and Celestia.
"WHERE ART THOU, MURDEROUS BOOK DEMON!?" Luna shouted in the royal Canterlot voice.
Cadence ran up to Twilight. "Oh I'm so glad you're alright!"
Celestia's horn was lit with fire. "The demon seems to have left."
Twilight stared wide-eyed. "WHAT IS GOING ON!?" she screamed in a mix of confusion and shock. She then held up her hoof. "Actually, I don't want to know. Come on Spike, it's bedtime, and we don't need the mood ruined." Twilight walked out of the library with her assistant.
"The three alicorns stood stand-YEESH I start speaking and you try to kill me!" The book in the flame form jumped down from a bookshelf, dodging the attacks of magic. "Will. You. Stop FOR FIVE MINUTES? Thank you."
The book exploded into dust, which took the shape of a white horse. The horse had-for some strange reason- a red bowtie over a white scarf. He had splatters of color on his flank, along with red hearts. On his legs were stockings of grey that reached his knees. On his face was a scar and glasses. "Thank you! I'm not a book demon! Well, I slightly am but at this point I'm teleporting." With a poof, he vanished. A bag of potato chips were left.
"Search for the demon. He might try to kill Twi-" Celestia began.
"The Braytish demon saved me!" Twilight shouted from down the hall. "Now LEAVE! We're trying to sleep!"
Celestia looked at the other Alicorns, who shrugged. "Sister, We- I believe we should leave." Luna said. She looked towards the broken wall. "Not it!" she shouted, before flying out.
"Not it!" Cadence shouted, quickly following.
Celestia glared as they left. "Really? We still need to figure out what the demon-"
"I'll send you a report tomorrow! NOW GO!" Came Twilight's shout.
