Shining Armor tiptoed around the kitchen of the house. His eyes ricocheted from corner to corner, despite the darkness keeping them impossibly black. Even after shutting the door slowly enough to not disturb anyone in the house, he took no chances.
Looking back to the little window cut in the house's side door, the teenaged unicorn only saw the faintest hint of the curling red-yellow and violet locks of his date through the swirling glass panes. For a minute he froze, certain that he saw a spatter of purple sparks in the corner next to the refrigerator. But, only the darkness and the cooing of pigeons answered him, much as he strained to find out any weird shapes.
After a while, Shining’s shoulders sagged in relief. Surely the possibility of an intruder was silly. This house was off the main Canterlot paths, he’d made sure only he and Cadance returned to the spot, and they were all unicorns - they all knew how to defend themselves. Yet his alertness remained, ready to meet any challenge should it arise. Even as a teenager, he’d faced so many insurmountable challenges in the School for Gifted Unicorns, many involving winning the heart of Cadance.
But for now, with their first date over, he had only one massively large obstacle to overcome to get to his room and sleep off his first public date in peace. One more persistent, more tenacious, more predatorial than any Everfree creature.
And yet there she was in the once-dark living room, her white horn snapping up the lamps. The chandelier was only half as bright as her smile though. “My wonderful son, how was Cadance?” Twilight Velvet cooed, settling herself further in the plush chair.

“A good mage is always prepared, Shiny.” Velvet crossed one hoof over her maw so Shining couldn’t see her salacious grin grow. “And your friends weren’t complaining.”
“They’d have to take their eyes off your cutie-mark to do that!”

“Wiping them out with your first fireball spell might be where the problem started!”
“What? I offered them reincarnations for next time when they complained.”

“Telling my two friends~? Mom, what did you do?” Shining asked her sternly.

“Wait, that was you? Mom.. you were the one who wanted me to talk to Cadance? A-and go through with all that polo game championship rallies, even though I was so scared of Gaffer?” Shining’s brain poured over the implications. “But why? The impact almost made the spherical ice in the glass jar jump out of their clear prison. “Shining, I am very aware of how little children take advice from their parents! Just now, I’m pretty positive that I’ve had to tell Twilight to go to bed and leave the hayseed cakes alone for the third-” A flurry of scampering hooves in the kitchen behind them made Velvet's eyebrows rise in frustration “-make that fourth time today! And I didn’t want your chance to fade away because your Mom was prodding you toward it!”
“But now, I’m not even sure if it was me that Cadance was attracted to in the end, or…. Or…” Shining’s head lowered to the floor. “Or if it was pity.”
The firm yet soundless stamps to his position didn’t make Shining budge. “Now you listen here, mister.” Shining never knew Velvet had so authoritative a voice - usually, Serious Canterlot Voices were a Dad thing - until he looked up to the two pools of amethyst flame staring back at him. “Anything you and Cadance become - and you are her special somepony now, never forget that - will be because of the effort you both put into this. Pity has nothing to do with it; your perseverance got you Cadance, and it’ll keep her. Remember the sonnet we read, Shining.”
“That one by Shale Silverstride?” Shining remembered it, yes. But he thought he’d outgrown them, and being called on to recite it made him blush. “C’mon, Mom, I’m a high-schooler now-”
“Some things are timeless, Shining, and Cadance is Princess of one of them. Now. Repeat. The poem.” Velvet’s head cocked when Shining let out several half-hearted murmurs. “Don’t worry, I’ll help you.”
Taking Shining's forehooves in her own, Velvet led him to the sofa next to the glass table. The ice in the pitcher clinked as Velvet drew two glasses through the frothy brew. Bringing Shining his glass, Velvet sat down next to her son. Patiently, she waited until his glass was halfway to being drained before speaking.
“This balloon will only take you halfway there: to your long-sought home of harmony…” Velvet started.
Shining continued on, his warm grin growing with each word spoken. “To friends you meet in land and air, and the countless days you’ll all roam free. They’ll walk awhile with thee and share their fears, their hopes, their twisting trails….”
“And in return, true magic will sprout, richer than any gem you’ll seek out.”
“But this balloon will only take you halfway there, to all the wonders once found at home.” Shining slowly looked up to see a solitary tear run down Velvet’s face. He wiped it away as they finished. “For the last few steps…”
“...you'll have to take them alone.” Velvet gratefully said. For a while, they sat in pleasant silence, uncaring of the craft ice dwindling to the size of marbles in their frosted cups. Shining took in the warm and understanding air his mother radiated out to him. Velvet took in the tireless, humble look that flashed back into Shining’s eyes - just like that of her husband, only a floor away and yet perfectly reflected in the strong stallion before her.
“And you’re saying my route leads me to Cadance.”
“Yes, Shiny! Yes it does! “ Velvet downed her glass in one gulp, shivered quickly over the coldness prickling at her nerves, and stood up on the couch! “And that wonderful sugar rush showed me how! Let’s go!”

“Uh, Mom?” Shining warily asked, looking at the raised Old Ponish script of the words Ogres and Oubliettesstaring back at him from that box. “What is this for?”
“Well, Shining, your talk of how I’d intruded on your friends little game didn’t go unheeded by me! So I got a box set of my own, and learned it back to front! Took a while, especially since…”
Then Velvet brought up the side of the game box to Shining’s eyes. Those blue orbs of Shining suddenly widened upon seeing the added moniker on this box’s labeling. “This is the Robins and Queens Edition of O&O! The one with the Magical Virtual Reality runes! There's only five of these in the world, Mom, how’’d you get it?”
The twinkle in Velvet’s eyes intensified. So did the mischief in her grin. “Shining, that game of yours is a far hotter topic than you think. So’s the Fire Sky Firework Troupe showpony. I learned both quite recently.“

Now the color fled Shining's face. If it was possible for his coat to look whiter, it did at that moment. “Seriously, Mom? Does Dad know about this?”
“What is it son?” The fatigue in Night Light’s voice didn’t distract from the curiosity. It was one of the reasons Shining didn’t jump. Now Shining and Cadance were an item, and Shining still felt short of breath, scared, withdrawn. Only now, it was because it felt like all he’d gained over the last year felt so fragile.
From that uncertainty, though, came a new feeling. It showed when Cadance stopped his babbling about the heat of their dinner by kissing away the anxiety. Then again with his mom, her every lewd crack followed up with surprises like the O&O game she’d brought out. Shining supposed that such affection around him was so common he’d taken it for granted. Well, no more. He thought.
“Alright, Mom. What do you have in mind?”
Velvet’s horn flashed with light, and the familiar setting of Shining’s room disappeared just as the game box’s lid opened. “Well, we’ll only need three scenes for this act, so this’ll be a great way to hash out both our problems with connectivity.” Soon, the light transforming Shining’s room washed over both ponies in the center of it too. “Real connectivity, Shiny. Honestly, I’m surprised I never used this sooner, but we can fix that today too.”
The scrubbed plaster of Shining’s walls gave way to shining hickory wood. Oaken tables sprang up where the bed used to be, several ponies and griffins - made of pewter - nipping at drinks at each corner. And the scene of all the greatest Ogres and Oubliettes stories, the tavern bar, sprang up behind Shining, nearly bisecting next to the door exiting his room.
“Well, Mom.” Shining said. “I’ll try to help you through it as an expert. May the better pony…” He turned to empty air, as Velvet seemed to have vanished in this bustling bar. “...win?”
Then a voice finally broke through the din. Despite how it makes Shining’s teeth rattled in his skull, not a single one of the pewter bar-goers’ ears perked up to address it.
“Our tale begins with but two pones,

If they wish to beat the Queen alone, on this day in Everwood Forest…”
This time Shining realized what that voice meant. “Neat! Probably for the best that you’re the game-master, Mom.” He checked out his hooves, now covered in the same forest-green barding as his torso and head. “Where do I go? I’m sure this Robin is here somewhere.”
“Oh sweetie, it’s what you need to do to get the Robin here that matters.“
Shining felt his body temperature drop a hundred degrees. Turning around, he saw his mother at long last, smack-dab behind the bar. The bard’s costume Velvet was in was very eye-catching: an arrow-brimmed hat, a poofy plum shirt and sinfully tight leather pants with a part of wooden pipes dangling off her waist.
Silently, Shining cursed himself for eyeing up his own mother so licentiously. Then he realized what her presence here meant. “If you're not the game-master, who is?”
“You’ll find out quite soon enough, so-Shining!” the disembodied game-master spoke again. “For now, know you’ve gotta get the bard on your side to continue your tale with pride!”
“Come again?”
“Oh, I’m certain your mother will make sure of that!” the voice said, in a tone that finally made Shining’s eyes widen. “Whoops, sorry.”
Shining dragged a hoof down his snout. “Please please please don’t tell me that’s dad.”
Velvet giggled. “Okay! I won’t, my son.” she coyly replied. “What I will tell you is this - I’ve called up The Robin myself, to answer the call of adventure! But I hate leaving a job half finished, Shining! I’ve got to complete my own little song - the one I made for my husband back home! And only one thing can help me focus.“
“What is it, mom?”
