Chapters Sunset's Love Life - Holidays Together
Of Tradition and Hearth Warming
Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle, a couple who had been through a lot together but any of their friends could see it looked like they were destined for each other.
Life was fairly simple in their household as college went on, they had time in the mornings to enjoy each other's embrace and eat a healthy breakfast before heading out and they were never far apart during college due to studying the same course. This also meant they could keep each other right and make sure they were both keeping up with work but also leaving time to relax and unwind. This was helped by the maintained friendship with their old classmates from Canterlot High who had been through the wringer as much as they had.
Weekends were almost always reserved for the group to hang out together. At the park, the mall or anywhere else they could meet. They always had stories to tell of their own relationships and college hardships. But as a whole the friends were always there to comfort and console each other if something ever went wrong. Pinkie Pie was always bubbly and full of energy, her girlfriend Vinyl Scratch happy to sit back and let her take charge of the conversation. Applejack and Rarity always seemed to have different takes on events that occurred and Rainbow Dash often didn't let her girlfriend Fluttershy get a word in, not that she would have much to say on the matter.
But on a brisk Monday morning, no early rise for college was needed as it was finished for the holidays. Snow gently fell outside sparkling like glitter, the cold morning air chilled those unfortunate enough to be caught in it and those who remained indoors preferred the comfort of their bed and warm blankets to anything else that morning.
Sunset woke up that morning with her lavender lover snuggled into her chest as was so often the case. Twilight was certainly independent and liked to keep an air of intelligence around her friends, but at home she was the meek little geek Sunset fell in love with and happy to cuddle her Sunny.
Sunset smiled and a glance at the clock which told her it was 10 AM, about time they were out of bed she thought. She shook Twilight gently and gave her a small peck on the nose.
"Twilight, I think it's time we got out of bed."
Twilight stirred and her eyes opened seeing the familiar face of her girlfriend in front of her.
With a yawn she responded. "Alright Sunny, what time is it?"
"It's 10 AM, I know we don't have college for a few weeks but it would still be nice to get things done, not that I have any problem with snuggling you all day"
The two got out of bed and showered before dressing in lounge wear, they had no plans to go anywhere that day so the morning was reserved for being together. Sunset looked out the window at the decorations being hung by the local workers to begin making the city look more festive in time for Christmas. She sighed with a forlorn look which Twilight immediately caught.
"Sunset, what's wrong?"
"I've never had a real holiday celebration, that's all. All these lights, the decorations it's all great but I've never had anyone to share it with. I also kinda miss some of the old pony traditions we had back in Equestria, we celebrated a holiday called Hearths Warming. It celebrates the day that the three pony tribes came together in harmony for the first time and drove away the wicked windigos that almost froze their entire land. That moment was when they all together founded Equestria and they celebrated every year after to remember their unity."
"Wow Sunset, Equestrian traditions are very interesting, well if you miss it so much why don't you go back for a bit? You told me once that the Equestrian calendar is different to ours, so maybe you could celebrate both Hearth's Warming and Christmas. I'm sure Princess Twilight would be happy to accommodate you and I'd be OK with the girls here by myself."
"I wouldn't want to be part of a celebration of unity without my one true love, so unless you came with me I don't think that would be possible."
"Why not? Surely a Princess could put up 2 people...well I guess we'd be ponies technically. Long enough for us to celebrate your holidays."
Sunset thought for a moment. "Well if I remember my Equestrian dates right, Hearth's Warming eve would be about 2 days before Christmas Day. So if we celebrated it we could come back home in time for Christmas Eve and I'm sure we'll have something planned for the next day. Do you really want to come with me though? I don't want to pull you into a world you're not familliar with and completely transform your physical shape if you aren't comfortable with it."
"Sunset, I'd love to." Twilight finished with a peck on Sunset's cheek.
Sunset grabbed her book and began to write.
"Hey Twilight, It's Sunset. I've been feeling a bit homesick again, but this time I want to do something about it. I was wondering if you would have any problem with 2 extra guests for Hearth's Warming this year. Our Twilight has agreed to come with me to Equestria to celebrate and then we can come back to our world for our holiday of Christmas."
Within minutes the book vibrated and a response was given.
"Wow Sunset, I'd love to. My brother and his wife Cadence will be staying on Hearth's Warming Eve with their little foal Flurry Heart, with you and the other me there we'll be one big happy family. Oh and of course Starlight will be here too, no doubt with Trixie."
"Thanks Twilight, we'll be there next week."
Sunset closed the book and smiled at Twilight.
"Well she said yes, next week we'll go back to CHS and use the portal, it should take us into her castle right away."
"That's great sunset, but there is one problem I foresee. If she looks like me in this world, then presumably even without wings I'll look like her in Equestria. That could confuse people who don't know about the other world and explaining it to everyone would be a nightmare. As far as I know only Princess Twilight and her friends know about the portal at all."
"The Princesses know too, and I'd presume their immediate family as a result. But I'm sure we can come up with something once we get there. Magic is much more prevalent in Equestria and Princess Twilight probably knows a spell or two that could change your appearance just enough to still be you but also not literally be her doppelganger."
Twilight smiled. "Well I Look forward to it."
That day was mostly spent watching TV and snacking while tackling a little coursework they had to do over the holidays. Sunset was a bit grumpy asking why they had to do work when they should be relaxing while Twilight was more than happy to keep her mind sharp. After letting Twilight, who had become quite the kitchen wizard cook a delicious dinner they retired to bed together.

The week seemed to fly in with Sunset being anxious and excited to finally return to Equestria after so long. She could've gone back any time she wanted but she never had a real reason to until now and bringing her girlfriend along would make the trip even better.
They had prepared small bags with a few things like scarves and hats that they may need on the other side, but otherwise had nothing else to stop them. As they approached the portal Twilight stopped.
"Wait Sunset."
"What's up Twi?"
"I just need a minute, I mean I'm about to go through an interdimensional portal to a world of ponies where I myself will become a pony! I'm kind of freaking out a little."
Sunset silenced her with a kiss. "Easy Twilight, it'll be alright, I'll be here the whole time. Don't worry about a thing."
Twilight took a deep breath and clasped Sunset's hand as the two walked through the portal and arrived in a room familliar to Sunset. The blue crystalline walls and purple carpet told her all she needed to know, this was Princess Twilight's castle. And there to greet them was the Princess herself.
"Sunset! It's so great to see you again."
Her eyes quickly darted over to see a mirror image of herself though lacking wings and with distinct black glasses, on her hind legs about to fall over. Sunset and Princess Twilight caught her and helped her onto all fours.
Sunset chuckled. "Don't worry it took me a while to get used to being on all fours again after spending so long in our world the last time I came here."
Twilight blushed but regained her composure.
"Nice to see you again Princess, I fear that people seeing a mirror image of you as a unicorn might confuse them but other than that I'm more than happy to be here."
Princess Twilight smiled "I actually already thought of that. Could you hold still for a moment?"
Twilight then felt herself get enveloped by magic and suddenly her coat darkened into a deep dark violet color, her mane and tail shifted to contain more pink than blue with darker purple streaks and at a glance, she didn't look too different to the demon that haunted her nightmares for years. A glance at herself in the mirror made her recoil in shock.
"Ahh! I look like...like...no, please no." She then fainted.
Princess Twilight was confused. "Why did she faint? All i did was change her appearance a little."
Sunset knew the problem. "Twilight I know it wasn't intentional, but you made her look like Midnight Sparkle, the demon form that she took when the Equestrian magic corrupted her at the friendship games years ago. Even now she still has an occasional nightmare about it."
"I had no idea, I'm so sorry."
The unconscious unicorn stirred and was helped up by Princess Twilight.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't know."
"No It's fine. I Actually kinda like the c-color." She said through gritted teeth.
"I can change you to a different color if it would be any better. I know now that this reminds you of that day. I may not have been there but I heard what happened, from Sunset and from you. You are not that monster anymore, and as long as you have Sunset you never will be."
"Thank you, but I'm fine like this. In fact if i'm going to make an attempt to finally overcome my fear. Call me by her name. While I'm here, I shall be known as Midnight."
Sunset gasped. "Are you sure honey?"
"Positive Sunset, I need to get over my fears and this could be a good chance. If I get used to her colors on my body, then perhaps I can finally move on and realize that while she is part of me, she won't overtake me again."
Sunset smiled at her and nuzzled her. "Well then Midnight, shall we take a walk into town? I want to show you my world."
Twilight smiled as the two made their way out of the castle.
All through the town was blanketed by a light fall of snow. Midnight recognized many of the ponies in the town as there were people in her world who looked just like them. Most of them however were fully grown and working jobs or even owning their own businesses. She found it hard to believe that the two girls who became CHS' first openly gay couple could have pony counterparts running a sweet shop, and yet here was Lyra and Bon Bon. Or that in Equestria Vinyl had ended up with Octavia after all and the two shared a home where they produced music together. She also met the pony counterparts of all her friends who of course knew she wasn't their Twilight, but treated her as a friend all the same.
The whole time through the town however Midnight noticed Sunset wouldn't take her eyes off the building of Ponyville and all the ponies in the streets. She barely took a second to even look at Midnight.
Sugarcube Corner was packed with a line that stretched out the door so they decided instead to visit Bon Bon's sweet shop to get a bite to eat. The two hoped she would have something warm as they were freezing cold from being outside all day.
"Hello, I'm Bon Bon. What can I get for you?"
Sunset shivered as she spoke "You g-got anything warm?"
Bon Bon thought for a minute. "Well usually I don't like to go into my personal stores for customers but I do live above the shop. Would you like some Hot Cocoa?"
Midnight smiled at her "We would love s-some thank you."
Sunset had the forethought to bring some bits with her but Bon Bon refused them.
"But why? We're customers, don't you want us to pay?"
"It's cold out, the least I could do is let you warm up with some of my cocoa, and you two remind me of myself and Lyra, you're cute together. You are together right? I don't want to assume anything."
Midnight giggled "Well thanks, and yes we are together." She confirmed as much by kissing Sunset's muzzle.
Bon Bon smiled. "If you really want to be paying customers I've got some nice fresh chocolates just made this morning that you could buy."
Sunset placed some bits on the counter "We'll take them thank you."
After saying goodbye to Bon Bon they made their way back to the castle and spent the rest of the day chatting with Princess Twilight and staying warm by the library's fire. Hearth's Warming Eve was tomorrow night and Twilight informed them her family and friends would be arriving tomorrow morning. Midnight and Sunset were shown their room together. But as they lay in bed Sunset asleep within moments, Midnight lay awake thinking.
She noticed Sunset being almost overly friendly towards the Princess, accepting nuzzles and hugs, nuzzling back more than once. Maybe it was a common form of affection here but she didn't know that, she could swear Sunset was inches away from kissing Princess Twilight's cheek at one point too. Suddenly a voice within her spoke up from the darkness.
"Don't you see, she clearly cares more for that pony than she ever did for you. She only stayed with you because she felt guilty about leaving Equestria and wanted to stay in your world, and you were the closest thing to the Princess that she could have. She doesn't care for you and never has, you were just a proxy for the real girl she loved."
Midnight grew angrier with every thought, no matter how hard she tried to reason otherwise, this voice kept telling her Sunset never loved her in the first place. Was it right? How could she know. She was tired and decided to sleep and deal with it in the morning.

The next morning Sunset had already awoke and helped Princess Twilight to decorate the castle while Midnight lay in bed not knowing what to believe anymore. As the day went on she was able to hold a facade and keep a straight face managing to convince Twilight and Sunset that there was nothing wrong.
The door opened around the middle of the day and a white stallion popped his head inside.
"Hey everybody, hope we're not too late." Shining armor walked in with Cadence behind him and Flurry Heart dressed as a star floating in magic beside her. Twilight immediately hugged her siblings and nuzzled her niece before showing them where they would be staying. Sunset followed having plenty to converse about with Twilight it seemed.
Part of Midnight tried to reason that she was being paranoid, Sunset did love her and there's no way she would betray her love just to be with the Princess. Right? Another part of her however kept nagging at her that Sunset never loved her and that Sunset was always using her as a proxy.
That evening it all came crashing down. As they enjoyed a nice meal together Sunset conversed with Twilight the whole time never speaking to Midnight at all. After the meal Midnight excused herself and began crying over a balcony outside their room. Sunset had followed her back fearing something was wrong.
"Honey, what's wrong?"
Something snapped inside Twilight Sparkle, she angrily turned and glared at Sunset.
"What's wrong? What's wrong!? What's wrong is you've been staring at that pony hussy ever since we got here, you've barely taken a minute to ask how I feel after our first day here and I feel like you're just using me because you know you can't have her."
Sunset tried to calm her down. "It's not like that, I haven't seen The Princess in a long time, talking in person is different from just using the book, you know you'd rather see your friends than just text them all the time back home."
"Home? I doubt my world was ever your true home. You always wanted to come back here and be with her since she saved you didn't you? You never cared about me. You just used me."
"Twilight you're being unreasonable, of course I love you. Princess Twilight is just a friend, nothing more."
"Yeah, that's why you nuzzled her in the library the other night. Well I've had it! If you want her, then you can have her, you clearly don't need me!"
Twilight bolted out the front door where she ran into the freezing night intending to go as far away from Sunset as her hooves would take her.
Sunset collapsed onto her stomach and cried. "What have I done? She's right, I was ignoring her, I should've seen the signs. I love her, why can't she see that? This whole trip was a mistake."
Princess Twilight upon hearing crying walked in and placed a wing over Sunset. Sunset batted it away in a fit of rage.
"Go away!"
"Sunset what's wrong?"
Sunset tried to calm down enough to speak. "Midnight just ran away, out the front door. I saw her through the window. She thought I was just using her as a proxy for you and that I didn't love her. I've been paying too much attention to Equestria and to you since I got here because it's been a long time but I didn't pay attention to her and how she felt. She seemed alright but something snapped in her. I love her with all my heart and I never want to lose her, I hope my stupidity didn't drive her away for good."
Twilight gasped. "Sunset it's evening time in the winter, she'll freeze to death out there, you have to go after her quickly!"
Sunset stood up and dried her tears, with determination in her eyes she galloped as fast as she could out of the castle and followed the hoof tracks to find her girlfriend. Eventually the tracks stopped but she noticed a light on upstairs in Bon Bon's sweet shop, she hoped they had seen something.
A knock on the door confirmed her worst fears, Twilight had fainted in the snow and Lyra had spotted her and brought her in, she had mild hypothermia and was laid in a warm blanked on their couch. Sunset lay over her and cried.
"Oh Midnight, I'm so stupid. I should've seen you were unhappy, I should've done something. I can't lose you I just can't, you're the only one for me, you always were and always will be. I don't care what your brain is telling you, it's wrong. I love you."
Sunset's own body heat combined with the blanket warmed Twilight enough to wake up.
As soon as she saw Sunset she scowled slightly, but then she saw she was in an unfamilliar place and realized she mustve fainted in the snow and Sunset followed her.
"Sunset, why did you come after me? I told you if you want The Princess then take her."
"Midnight stop being stupid. This isn't like you. I love you and only you, I don't know whats telling you I never cared for you but it's lying, I've always loved you."
"How do I know you're not just saying that to keep in my good books?"
"Look into my eyes, do I look like I'm lying to you?"
Midnight looked, and saw a face filled with tears and regret. If Sunset didn't care for her she wouldn't have risked her own life to find her, and she certainly wouldn't be crying because she knows she did something wrong. The nagging voice was still there trying to tell her Sunset was acting, but a new force rose within her. Love, true love that she hadn't felt in a long time, and it was clearly for the pony in front of her. The nagging stopped, and she could think clearly again.
"Oh Sunset, I should've trusted you, I'm so sorry I ran away and made you risk your life for me." Twilight began crying too.
They embraced with a kiss and a hug while the two onlookers just smiled at the couple.
Bon Bon spoke up. "You'll find with any relationship there's always insecurities, bumps on the road and even arguments. But a true bond of love will overcome anything."
Lyra smiled at her. "Yup, if you stick together nothing can come between you."
Sunset decided it would perhaps not be wise to venture out into the snow again so with all her might she focused and was able to teleport the two back to the castle.
The pair smiled as they saw Princess Twilight with her family and friends placing presents under the tree for the morning and drinking hot cocoa. They gladly accepted some for themselves as they never left each others side that night.

The morning came and Spike was racing around the castle trying to wake everyone. Twilight had insisted that presents wouldn't be opened until everyone was up that morning.
Everyone sleepily walked into the living area where the tree had been set up with all the presents beneath it. A tradition Midnight knew about as it was the same as Christmas.
Midnight spoke first. "Wow the decorations look great, I didn't really get a good look before. We didn't bring you guys anything though sorry, I guess in all the hype for Sunset seeing Princess Twilight again we kinda forgot."
"Didn't we?" Said Sunset with a smirk.
She levitated presents from under the tree for Twilight, Spike, Starlight, Trixie, Shining Armor and Cadence and of course Flurry Heart. Twilight was given a book about the traditions in Sunset's world, Spike a large ruby, Starlight and Trixie recieved matching scarves. Shining and Cadence were given a day pass to Ponyville Spa that Twilight had given Sunset on her last visit but she never used. Flurry Heart recieved a small plush pony, orange in color like Sunset. She squeezed it tight and flew over to give Sunset and Midnight a hug each.
"I know you normally like to organize everything honey, but I thought since we were going to visit my friends that I should be the one to make sure we had everything ready this time."
Midnight smiled at Sunset and kissed her on the cheek.
"I guess I must be rubbing off on you Sunny."
The two didn't go without recieving their own gifts however. Twilight giving them matching scarves too, however these were enchanted by alicorn magic to change size and shape in the other world. Cadence had planned to give a hoof stitched blanket to Twilight but she insisted it went to Sunset and Midnight instead, Twilight also enchanted it so it would resize through the portal. Even Starlight upon hearing Sunset was coming to visit baked them a traditional Hearth's Warming cake.
"Trixie was a great assistant while Starlight baked that you know." She arrogantly proclaimed.
"If by Assistant you mean sneaking tiny bits of the mixture into your mouth and licking the spoon, then yes you were." Starlight answered back with a smirk.
"Trixie has no idea what you're talking about." She sheepishly said, sinking away beside Starlight.
The whole room erupted in laughter. Sunset and Midnight decided to take a walk outside as Twilight, Starlight and Cadence began preparing a feast for them all. Trixie was using her tricks to entertain Flurry Heart while Spike and Shining Armor began discussing something none of the ladies had any interest in hearing.
"Probably talking about Hoofball or something." Cadence said giggling.
Outside, properly attired this time with scarves and hats. Midnight and Sunset walked through the decorated town, a few others were outside their own homes building snow ponies and throwing snowballs. A stray snowball almost collided with Midnight but she managed to catch it with her magic at the last second and fired it back hitting a young colt in the face. He stood up laughing and apologized for almost hitting them.
"Wow Midnight, back home you're barely able to use your magic, and yet you seem to have no problem here in Equestria."
"I've been feeling a little stronger recently in terms of my magic, I don't know why. Can we sit down somewhere, I have to tell you something."
They found a bench and sat together.
"What's up sweetie?" Sunset inquired.
"Well you know we had a fight and I snapped at you. I'm still sorry for that by the way. But over the last day or two I've felt this presence inside me, it's strong and it kept telling me you never loved me. I think i was just about able to overcome it and see the truth in Bon Bon's living room that night but I'm afraid the voice will come back. The worst part is, I recognize the voice. I heard it once before, when the magic corrupted me at the friendship games. I-I think Midnight Sparkle might be trying to take over again."
Sunset looked genuinely concerned at her girlfriend beside her who was by this point in tears. She enveloped her in a hug and spoke softly.
"Midnight. No, Twilight. It's ok. I'll be here through whatever hardships come your way, we're a couple and I won't leave you over something like that. If she is trying to take over then we can fight her together just like we did back then."
Midnight sniffed, "T-thanks Sunny. I'm glad you're here for me."
They decided to head back to the castle where they were directed to the dining room and in front of them lay a vast assortment of foods. A large Casserole, all sorts of vegetables and plenty of different varieties of jams and chutneys as well as traditional bread stuffing. Everyone plated up their own food and began eating. There was plenty for all and plenty of leftovers stored away for the immediate future. Two large pies, one apple and one cherry were cooling in the kitchen as the ponies made their way to the living area. They were stuffed but they all knew they would find a little extra room somewhere for some dessert later.
"Man I couldn't eat another bite" Sunset said picking her teeth
Flurry heart had been given a small amount of food along with some baby food so as to not upset her stomach and was currently being fed by Cadence. Trixie and Starlight had fallen asleep. Shining Armor was staring starry eyed at his daughter while Twilight just beamed at the whole room. Midnight of course was cuddled up to Sunset.
Midnight spoke. "I've had a great time, and I'd love to come back someday for a visit certainly. I'm sure Sunset wouldn't mind either."
"I'd love to honey and I'm glad you had a good time. It's a shame we've got to leave tomorrow morning I've been enjoying my time here."
"True Sunny, but we have other friends to celebrate with remember?"
"Yeah I know. Doesn't stop me wishing for a little more time here."
"Well let's make the most of our time here while we have it." Midnight finished kissing her girlfriend's muzzle. The two began to kiss passionately before a giggle from Cadence reminded them they were presently with company.
"Oh don't mind us you two lovebirds. It's just so nice to see a couple truly in love."
After a slice of pie each. Everyone retired to their rooms for the night.
Midnight however didn't fare to well in the land of dreams, with the haunting visage of Midnight Sparkle giving her quite the nightmare.
"Why are you fighting me? You know I'm who you want to be deep down, I'm stronger than anyone in our world, embrace my power and none could stop us. You could learn everything your heart desired and conquer every land that you wanted to."
"No, stop! Maybe once I would've done anything for knowledge, but I've changed, I'm not you anymore and you are not me!"
Midnight's form dissipated and was to be replaced by a striking blue alicorn with a black blotch on her flank containing a moon and stars for a cutie mark.
"I know young Twilight that you are not of this world, but that doesn't mean I shouldn't give you guidance while you are here. Tell me, what troubles you?"
"I'm sure Princess Twilight told you about what I did at the friendship games in my world. The demon that corrupted me never truly left, no matter what I do I can't get rid of her."
"I know too the pain of regret, of taking a form that represents the worst of your qualities and almost dooming an entire world. Once upon a time I was known as Nightmare Moon, and she would still haunt me to this day had Princess Twilight not convinced me to embrace her and forgive myself. She is part of me, part I would discard given the chance, but also part I had to embrace. This demon may not be who you truly are, but she is part of you, and she will haunt your dreams forever unless you accept that and forgive yourself for what happened."
"Wait a minute." Twilight thought "You're Luna right? Sunset told me about the beautiful night skies you crafted for this world. She never mentioned you had a dark past though."
"Sadly she was not born when I was first vanquished, nor was she in this world when I returned. She likely didn't know of it."
"If a great pony like you can accept your dark past and forgive yourself for a brighter future, why can't I?"
"It is not easy young one, but in time I'm sure you can manage it. You have a light beside you to brighten up even the darkest of midnights after all." The sleeping form of Sunset materialized in her dream, a vision from Luna.
"You're right,It might take a while. But I'm sure I can overcome this with Sunset by my side. Thank you Princess Luna."
Luna smiled and disappeared into the dreamscape. Twilight slept peacefully until the morning.
In the morning Sunset was already awake and staring into her eyes.
"Morning sleepy head, sleep well?"
"Not at first, I had a nightmare about Midnight Sparkle. But then Princess Luna came into my dream and told me all about how she was a monster once too, and she forgave herself and embraced that part of her moving on to a better future. She said you wouldn't have known about it though."
"I didn't. I knew she was around when I came through the portal once and Twilight brought me to reconcile with Celestia. I never knew Celestia had a sister. But the topic of her past never came up."
"Well I hope I can overcome her influence someday."
"You'll never have to face her alone, remember that. You have me and all our friends and we'll never let you down."
The two grabbed a quick breakfast before packing away their presents and heading back through the portal. Once they adjusted to being human again Sunset checked her phone which had re-appeared and confirmed time and date as 10 AM December 24th. Christmas Eve.
Sunset's Love Life - Holidays Together
The two returned to their apartment glad that the walk there allowed them to adjust to being human again stretching their legs and getting used to their different center of gravity.
"So Twi, how was your first experience in Equestria?"
"It was. Eventful. I'm sorry we had that massive fight, I could've died out there. I guess it's a good thing I have someone like you who cares so much for me. If you're worried about not wanting to return then don't. I'll go back with you anytime you want me to. Just maybe come up with a different name, and color scheme. The less I have to be reminded of that demon the better."
"It was your idea to keep the colors, and you came up with the name. I guess it was too much too soon to think that you could handle it. Equestria's natural magic may have amplified her power which is why she was able to influence you. But over here that shouldn't be a problem, I hope."
Smiling hand in hand they entered their apartment and saw that it had been decorated for them. A large Christmas Tree stood in the corner with tinsel, holly and lights all around the walls glowing red and green. A note was left on their small table in the living room.
"Dear Sunset and Twilight. We thought you might want some festive cheer from home once you returned. So we decorated your apartment for you, thanks again for giving Applejack a spare key. Once you come back let me know so we can talk. We have something to discuss with you. Much Love: Rarity"
"To think they did this for us. Its so great to have such good friends." Sunset said smiling all the while.
Twilight took in the decorations and smiled too.
"A little traditional perhaps, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Though I do wonder what they wanted to talk about. Maybe we should call Rarity."
"Great idea Twi, I'll do it now."
Sunset picked up her phone and called Rarity.
"Well, It's about time you two got back. Honestly I was hoping you would be back in time so as to not leave this to the last second."
"Slow down Rarity, what are you talking about?"
"We had a discussion. First off, is Twilight going to her parents for christmas?"
Sunset put the phone on speaker
"You're on speaker Rarity, Twilight are you going home for Christmas?"
"Nope, I was invited for a boxing day dinner but Christmas Day is completely free. Why did you want to know Rarity?"
"None of us are returning home either, and we decided since we're basically one big family anyway that we should spend Christmas Day together. We thought your apartment with its huge living room would be the perfect place, If you'll acommodate 6 friends for a day that is."
Twilight inquired "But what about a Christmas Dinner?"
"Twilight darling from what I hear you're quite the whiz in that kitchen, and with Applejack and Pinkie Pie there I'm sure you can come up with something delectable."
"What do you think Twi? Wanna play host to our pals?"
"Sunny, I think they could be more like family to us than our real family sometimes. Of course I'd be happy to."
"It's settled then, I'll let the others know. We'll be round bright and early, let's say 8 AM? Should give us plenty of time to enjoy the company, open presents and let our chefs prepare their masterpiece."
"We're hardly chefs Rarity, and Applejack won't be with you all the time, there may come a day when she has a meeting, or an extra class and you have to fend for yourself. It could be beneficial to learn to cook something."
"When that time comes I'm sure I'll be fine, anyway I'll see you tomorrow then darlings!"
With that Rarity hung up and the two were left to plan the next day.
"Ok first problem. I got presents for our friends in Equestria but I totally forgot about our friends here. We can't have them for Christmas without something to give them." Sunset said sighing.
"And this is why you should leave organizing things to me. Back left corner of the closet in our room."
Sunset checked the directed location and sure enough found 6 wrapped presents each labelled with the name of one of their friends.
"When did you have time to do this?"
"The time you fell asleep watching that Christmas movie about a week ago. I walked to the mall, got the presents and got a bus back." Twilight finished, winking at Sunset.
"You always have everything planned out Twilight, and that's why I love you."
Sunset placed the presents under the tree and kissed Twilight on the cheek.
"Ok problem number two, we don't have everything for a Christmas Dinner in the house."
As if on cue Sunset recieved a text from Applejack. "I'm bringing a big turkey for us to cook, but you'll need to provide the rest of the dinner sorry."
"We can go shopping once we're done planning here, thankfully the supermarket is still open till the early evening and we just need stuffing, vegetables and potatoes."
"Would be nice to have a vegitarian option too, I don't eat meat as you well know and I'm sure Fluttershy wouldnt mind it either."
"No problem, I can whip up a vegetable casserole for anyone who wants it. Do we have room in the fridge for leftovers? There's probably not going to be much with 8 hungry gals at the table. Especially with Applejack and Rainbow Dash, I swear those two eat like hor-"
Twilight caught herself before she finished her analogy. Sunset just laughed at her.
"It's fine Twilight, I've heard it plenty of times before and I don't take offense to it. The farm horses of this world do tend to eat a lot more than ponies in Equestria do."
The two girls wrapped up warm and went out into the brisk afternoon heading to the supermarket. There weren't many people out and about aside from a few who looked like they left Christmas shopping to the last second and were darting around every store on the street. After buying their supplies they headed back home before the snowfall became to much to handle. They shook off the leftover snow and hung their coats to dry while Sunset turned the heat on.
"It's a shame we can't light a fire Sunny, It would make the perfect Christmas backdrop."
"Yeah. Maybe someday we'll have an actual house of our own, where we can light a fire. hang the decorations and have all the girls round like a big family."
"I don't think your family ever came up in conversation Sunset. Care to explain?"
"Not much to say. Mom passed in childbirth and Dad raised me as best he could. He saw my talents and practically begged Celestia to let me into her school. I aced the entrance exam but of course you know what happened there. I got mad and I thought she was keeping magic secrets from me. Holding on to power she was going to someday entrust to someone and I thought at the time it should've been me. I fled through the portal and never looked back. Princess Celestia said my dad was very sad. But I did see him one more time awhile back. He was suffering from a rare disease and passed away in Canterlot Hospital. I thought I'd be best staying in this world so I wouldn't be constantly reminded that I was alone."
Sunset began to tear up, but a lavender hand on her shoulder made her turn her tear filled eyes upwards and see the smiling face of her girlfriend beside her.
"You aren't alone, and you never will be. You have our friends who won't let you down, and you have me, even if we have some horrific fight and break apart, I'll always be your friend. But I don't think that will ever happen. I love you far too much for that."
Sunset, tears streaming down her face hugged Twilight tight and Twilight in turn held her close, comforting her as best she could.
"Don't be afraid to cry Sunny. Everyone does it now and then. Especially with your empathy being amplified by that geode I'm surprised and proud that you hold yourself together so well. But even tough girls cry."
Sunset giggled through the tears.
"T-thanks Twi, but I'm not a tough girl, not anymore. I'm just happy to be me."
"I still think you're tough Sunset, it's not a bad thing to be resilient sometimes. I'm just glad that we get to see the real you underneath. And that I get to see a side of you even our friends don't know about."
The clock read 10 PM, the two had been cuddling for a long time, longer than either thought. After Twilight quickly put away the groceries she had brought home earlier they changed into pajamas and went to bed.
"Hey Twi?"
"Yeah Sunny, what's up?"
"Do you mind if I'm the little spoon tonight? I'm not feeling great and I'd like to be held."
Smiling with a light chuckle Twilight said "Sure Sunny, I don't mind."
Sunset cuddled her head into Twilight's neck and fell asleep almost immediately with Twilight's slender arms around her. Twilight set an alarm for 7 AM the next morning so they would have enough time to prepare themselves before kissing Sunset's forehead and yawning loudly.
"Goodnight Sweetie."
She fell asleep and both girls dreamed of nothing but sweetness the whole night long.
Sunset's Love Life - Holidays Together
At 7 AM the next morning the alarm went off. Both Sunset and Twilight woke up and showered dressing appropriately in lounge wear complete with festive t-shirts. At 8 AM a knock on the door signalled the arrival of Rarity and Applejack, a few moments later Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy came followed finally by Pinkie Pie and Vinyl Scratch. Each girl threw off their coats and revealed festive sweaters underneath. All manner of Santa Claus, reindeer and elves adorned their attire. Rarity and Applejack even had reindeer hairbands.
The girls all settled wherever they could. Large cushions had been set out for those who didn't get a chair or the couch. Rainbow Dash agreed to distribute the presents which were all placed under the tree.
"So how are we doing this? One at a time or just give everyone their presents and let er rip?" Dash asked the group.
Sunset thought for a moment. "Well it would be nice to slow down and let everyone appreciate their gifts. But I think we should just give them all out at once."
"Can do Sunset!"
Rainbow Dash's geode glowed and in a blur of rainbow there was a small pile of presents next to each girl.
Rarity was the first to open her presents. She received an assortment of hair accessories, perfumes and a silver necklace with a jewel in the center.
"These are all wonderful, thanks so much girls."
Applejack went next receiving a new toolbox, a new set of rather expensive looking high quality tools, a cookbook and a pair of earmuffs with an apple on each ear.
"Mighty kind of y'all to be so generous, thanks a million."
Rainbow Dash received a new pair of sneakers, a voucher for her favorite music streaming service, a new soccer ball and her own pair of earmuffs with a cloud and rainbow colored lightning bolt symbol on the ears.
"Cool presents guys, thanks a lot. I needed a new pair of these."
Fluttershy was given a letter confirming a very generous donation to Canterlot's animal shelter. Along with a reindeer outfit for her bunny rabbit Angel, a new bag and what seemed to be a theme of the day, earmuffs marked with butterflies on the ears.
"Wow, thanks so much everyone. I appreciate the shelter donation too. I wish more people would be as generous as you guys, they deserve it."
Next came Pinkie Pie who was given some pouches of confetti, a small clip on storage pouch, a book titled "Unique Baking for the Unique Baker" and her own pair of balloon marked earmuffs.
"You guys are the best, this book looks super fun! I'll be sure to make good use of the pouch too. Nothing like pocket confetti for a quick getaway."
Vinyl got some new CDs, a voucher for the same music streaming service as Rainbow Dash, a new pair of wireless earbuds and a pair of earmuffs marked with a double quaver music note.
"Awesome presents guys, to think I'd probably be at home alone munching leftover pizza if I hadn't met my gal Pinkie and made some kick butt friends. Thanks a bunch."
Finally came the hosts of the day.
First Twilight opened her gifts which contained a detective novel, a set of chef's knives, a cookbook and a pair of earmuffs marked with a pink eight pointed star and white sparkles.
"I love them, but who made all the earmuffs?"
Producing her own diamond marked earmuffs from a bag Rarity piped up. "Who do you think darling?"
Everyone laughed as Sunset opened her presents last of all.
She received a new game called Ultimate Cage Fighter 3, a brand new pair of leather boots, a new leather jacket and her own earmuffs marked with her sun symbol.
"I don't know what to say guys, thank you so much. These are all great. But why don't we remember that its the giving and not the receiving that matters most."
All the girls nodded in agreement and each of them re-examined their own presents, chatting among themselves about each other's presents. Shortly afterwards Twilight and Applejack took to the kitchen to start preparing their Christmas Dinner. Extra plates had been brought over to acommodate everyone and Pinkie had agreed to bake a unique dish she had come across online.
"It's called Christmas Pudding, apparently it's a sweet dessert made using all kinds of spices and dried fruit, it sounds super yummy and I'd love to give it a try! I brought everything with me and once Applejack and Twilight are out of the kitchen I'll start preparing it."
The TV was turned on to an old Christmas cartoon they had seen a hundred times over the years.
Sunset was the first to comment. "They always play the classics at Christmas don't they?"
"Yep." Responded Rainbow Dash "and they're just as cheesy every single year."
By this point Fluttershy had lay her head on Rainbow Dash's lap on the couch while the other girls awwed at her.
"It's nice to see that we're all happy in our personal relationships as well as being friends." Sunset said.
Vinyl spoke up "This kinda thing would've been alien to me awhile back, but I gotta admit seeing friends together just makes me all the happier that I got someone too. It's always nice to know you got a special someone as well as friends to look out for you."
Vinyl then kissed Pinkie on the cheek who giggled sweetly before responding.
"Sometimes it's nice to just kick back from the crazy and relax with that special someone. Of course our relationship is anything but relaxed I can tell ya that much." She laughed while Vinyl blushed.
"Pinks, what goes on at home ain't none of their business."
"I'm just teasing ya Vinyl." She said with a wink.
"Hey, how's dinner coming" Rainbow Dash hollered into the kitchen area.
"It'l be awhile yet, y'all know a full turkey takes a good bit of preparation and cookin'" Applejack shouted back.
"But If you're that impatient to grab some grub I brought some of granny's home made mince pies, they're in my bag."
The girls proceeded to enjoy the strange sweet pies. Applejack had no idea where the recipe came from but Granny Smith told her they were brought to Canterlot by far off travelers years ago when she was still young.
The girls started playing videogames together to pass the time, they decided nothing too competitive given the spirit of the holidays so they settled for a party board game that ended up getting a little more competitive than they bargained for with Fluttershy eventually winning by a hair, Sunset and Rainbow Dash looked ready to tear each other to pieces before Rarity and Pinkie stepped between them.
"The stupid game is rigged! If it rolled me a good number on that last turn i could've won!" Rainbow Dash shouted.
"Well you didn't have to use that item to slow me down! You only stopped me so your girlfriend could win!" Yelled back Sunset.
"Calm down you two. It's Christmas, a time for celebration and togetherness, you lost a videogame. so what? It's not the end of the world." Rarity tried to reason.
"Yeah, you don't want to fight on Christmas, that'd be silly." Pinkie added.
The two took a deep breath and apologized.
"Sorry things got a little heated Sunset. I guess I can be a little competitive."
"Yeah I know what you mean Dash, I'm the same way. Didn't Fluttershy tell you what happened the first time I invited her round to one of my game streams? She kicked my butt and I let her play the game on her own while I watched afterwards."
Fluttershy just smiled at the two. "Everyone's good at something I guess."
Soon after the meal was ready, Pinkie had prepared her pudding and left it in to cook while everyone else sat wherever they could find space and grabbed a plate. The food was all placed on their small living room table and everyone was free to dig in, though Applejack did have control of the turkey cutting so people didn't go overboard and leave none for the rest of the group. Everyone piled their plates high with all the food they wanted, Sunset and Fluttershy both enjoyed Twilight's vegetable casserole by the end of the meal everyone was absolutely stuffed and the TV was again turned on to an old Christmas movie.
Sunset commented "Is this really the only thing they show at Christmas? All these old movies? There's gotta be something better on."
Rainbow Dash laughed "Sorry Sunset but there's never anything on at Christmas besides the classics."
"If you ask me, Christmas is more about spending time with your friends and family than watching TV anyway." Fluttershy said.
Everyone agreed and pulled together into a big group hug.
Applejack had an idea. "Hey why don't we get a big Christmas photo of all of us together? This probably won't be the only time we spend the holidays with each other and I think it'd be nice to make some memories together."
"Oh absolutely darling." Rarity responded. "Being with you girls has given me moments I know I'll never forget."
Pinkie smiled. "Mhm, me too. I know I'll never forget you girls we've been through a lot together and we've got a lot of years ahead of us to make more memories."
"Yeah you girls are the coolest people I know, all the great times we had at CHS and now we're in the same college together. I don't think anything could break us apart." Rainbow Dash finished.
Rarity set up her phone camera with a timer and placed it on the table giving the girls time to come together in shot and smile for the camera.
"I definitely want that framed." Sunset said smiling.
Pinkie Pie took her pudding out of the oven and allowed it to cool before serving a piece to everyone who wanted it with some fresh cream.
"So what do you think?"
"It's great Pinkie." Sunset said smiling
Vinyl gave Pinkie a peck on the cheek and followed up. "Yeah Pinks, It's amazing."
After approval from everyone else they debated what to do next.
Sunset inquired, "Do any of you girls actually want to go home tonight? We have plenty of spare sleeping bags in a closet. You guys said we should keep them here in case of impromptu sleepovers."
"Aren't we a little old for that now Sunset dear?" Rarity said smirking
Applejack grabbed her girlfriend's hand. "Shoot Rares, ya ain't never too old to sleep over at a friend's place. Just cause we aren't in high school anymore doesn't mean we can't still stick together."
"I suppose you're right darling." Rarity said grasping Applejack's hand.
The girls all decided to stay over and rather than break out sleeping bags like the old times, they just fell asleep in whatever chair, couch or floor they felt comfortable in while Sunset and Twilight grabbed spare blankets for them all from the closet.
"Well Sunny, I think we did good today. Everyone was happy and we spent time together, that's what the holidays are about."
"Yep, although I'll admit I'm not particularly looking forward to tomorrow. You're dragging me to dinner with your parents."
"Hey, they could be your future in-laws, who knows Sunset."
"Maybe some day, but right now." She interrupted herself with a yawn and placed an arm around Twilight. "I just want to Sleep. It's been a long day."
"Hey you sat on your butt all day, your biggest achievement was being about 5 seconds away from getting into a scrap with Rainbow Dash. It was myself and Applejack that did the hard work today."
"Don't forget Pinkie and her amazing pudding."
They took one final glance at the living area. Fluttershy was cuddled into Rainbow Dash's chest. Rarity the same with Applejack, and Pinkie and Vinyl each had their arms around the other, It was a magical sight to behold.
"They look so peaceful. Let's go to our own bed Sunny I'm getting tired too."
The two girls climbed into bed together and hand in hand drifted off to sleep.
Sunset's Love Life - Holidays Together
The morning came and Twilight was the first to awaken. What she didn't notice was a small wisp of Equestrian magic sneaking through a gap in the door and into her head. Her eyes flashed a deep purple momentarily as she washed up and brushed her hair. She failed to notice it and went on with tying her hair in a ponytail and getting dressed, leaving Sunset to sleep peacefully.
The others woke one by one and each headed home together. Applejack insisted on helping Twilight with the dishes from the previous evening and once all their work was finished she headed home with Rarity in tow. Twilight glanced at her phone as it read 10:30. Her parents wanted her to be at their house for dinner by 2 PM so she knew Sunset would need to be woken soon.
She walked into their bedroom smiling sweetly. "Sunny, wake up."
After receiving a response of a grunt and a snore before Sunset fell back to sleep she yanked the covers off.
"Sunset! Wake up!"
Sunset startled fell out of bed and bonked her head on a nearby dresser.
"Owww. OK I'm up already!"
Twilight giggled. "Come on silly, you have to get ready, we're going to my parents house in a few hours for dinner remember?"
"I just hit my head, and all you care about is a stupid dinner? Cut me some slack Twi."
Twilight just stood there laughing at Sunset's misfortune for a moment longer before offering her a hand up.
"Oh come on, maybe it was a bit extreme but it was still hilarious Sunset."
"Not to me it wasn't."
Sunset washed up and chose an appropriate outfit. By the time the two of them were fully dressed and ready the time was 12:30 PM so they decided to begin walking to Twilight's parent's house.
Twilight kept thinking back to Sunset hitting her head and almost burst out laughing again. She thought to herself. "Why was that so funny? I shouldn't be laughing at Sunset getting hurt but I can't help it."
A voice within her head spoke softly.
"You laugh because she is weak, and you are strong. The strong mock the weak that's how it's always been."
"Perhaps I am stronger than her, it's not something I really thought about, but I am slightly taller and my magic is far stronger. Maybe when we get home I'll remind her who the alpha of our relationship is."
The reached the house and knocked the door being greeted by Shining Armor.
"Twily! And Sunset. You made it, come on in, it's freezing out there." Shining gave his sister a big hug who reluctantly returned it. Sunset was beginning to get suspicious.
They entered the house to see Twilight's mother cooking in the kitchen with her father and Cadence relaxing in the living room. Cadence notably a little plump around the mid section.
Sunset was the first to notice. "Hey Cadence, you look a bit uhh, chubby there. Something you want to tell us?"
"So you noticed. Yep Shiny and I are having a baby."
"Wow, how far along are you?"
"5 months. It's been a long time since we've seen each other Sunset."
"Well I'm sure you'll be a great mother. Isn't that right Twi?"
Twilight scowled momentarily but put a quick smile on. "Yeah you'll be great Cadence."
"Look at them, so happy together. Why cant I feel like that with Sunset? Every day is as boring as the last, even during the holidays. Someone needs to take charge."
"And that someone is you Twilight." said the voice in her head. "Embrace my magic, and you can do whatever you please to her or anyone else."
Twilight smiled and the next couple of hours were uneventful.
Dinner was plated up and everyone ate their fill with plenty of Ice Cream in the freezer for dessert. After dinner Twilight spoke to her mother. "Hey mom, you mind if we head up to my old room?"
"Don't do anything too frisky you two." She winked back.
"Come on Sunny." Sunset followed Twilight up to her old room a little wary. Twilight closed the door behind them and locked it shut. Before tackling Sunset to the bed and kissing her roughly.
"Woah Twi, take it easy girl. What's got you so riled up?"
"Sunset, you never take charge. You never do anything without consulting me first. If I didn't know any better I'd say you were being rather submissive. If you needed me to take charge of our relationship. All you had to do was ask." Twilight's voice became more sultry with every word.
Magic bound Sunset preventing her from moving. While Twilight kissed her passionately and nibbled on her neck. She released the magic hold allowing Sunset to move again.
"They'll get suspicious if we spend too much time up here, but don't worry Sunny. I've got plenty of plans when we get home." Twilight laughed almost menacingly.
Sunset was scared. This was not her Twilight, and as she gazed deep into Twilight's eyes she saw what she feared most. Her eyes had become a deep purple with traces of black and the smallest hint of a green flame adorning the pupil. Soon Twilight wouldn't be in control. Sunset knew something had to be done.
Sunset excused herself from the family to use the bathroom. But secretly she texted her friends to meet them at the park in an hour. Upon returning she spoke to Twilight's parents.
"Thank you for the wonderful meal, I'd love to stay longer but I'm a little tired, and I'm sure Twilight wants to get home don't you honey?"
"Oh yes Sunset let's head home."
Midnight Sparkle couldn't believe her luck. All she had to do was wait till they got home, take over again and steal the geode magic. With the magic of 2 Geodes she could easily overpower the rest of the group and claim their power too. "Twilight is such a sweet little angel, it's a shame I need her body as my vessel."
"Hey Twilight." Sunset said as they walked. "Do you wanna take a walk in the park first? I think it'd be nice."
"Sure Sunny, whatever you want." Midnight said keeping up the facade that Twilight was in control.
Once they got there however, the girls were waiting.
"Oh hey girls." Midnight said. "Why are you all here?"
Sunset then pushed her aside and ran to the group.
"Cut the crap Midnight, we know you've taken Twilight and we want her back!" Sunset growled angrily.
"Well I was hoping to keep this going a little longer, but I suppose needs must."
Twilight's body rose into the air transforming into the familiar form of Midnight Sparkle.
"I should really be thanking you Sunset, that trip to Equestria revitalized the magic and allowed me to take form again. I'll give you one chance. Stand by my side and share my magic, together we can rule this world and any other!
Or there's option number 2. Stand by your stupid friends and have your magic taken by force."
"We won't let you win!" Rainbow Dash shouted.
"We ain't stopping till Twilight's back to normal!" Added Applejack
"Our dear Twilight is nothing like you, you're a demon from her past that she's moved on from." Rarity said
"Yeah, so why don't you just stay gone!" Fluttershy yelled.
"We won't quit till Twilight is safe and happy again. And till you're down and out!" Yelled Pinkie.
The geodes glowed and their magic manifested into a rainbow of color which combined with Sunset's magic, Raising her into the air and transforming her into the form of Daydream Shimmer.
"If we must defeat you a thousand times, then we shall."
"STOP!" Yelled a familiar voice. Twilight had broken free from Midnight's control.
"What are you doing stupid girl! Stay back!"
"No! You're right, I am weak. But with my friends by my side I can be strong. You're a part of me, a part I wish I could be rid of, but one I can't deny. You're lonely, jealous even. You see all these relationships around you and wish it could be you instead of me. I feel sorry for you Midnight, you don't deserve to be mistreated because of one bad mistake, you might be a manifestation of magic but that doesn't make you evil. You have feeling just like anyone else. Well you won't control me any more. I choose to embrace your power, you are part of me, and you are a part of my world as much as any one of my friends."
Midnight Sparkle sobbed within Twilight's mind. "I was created by your innermost desires, I grew jealous that you achieved your goals and had gained a lover without my power. I wanted to help you, but I thought I had to take over for you to be happy. I'm sorry."
"It's ok, you'll never be alone again Midnight."
Twilight pushed Midnight Sparkle into her mind and returned to normal. Sunset doing the same.
"Sunset I'm so sorry, I saw everything she did and heard everything she had planned. She can't control me anymore. She's part of me and she always will be. But now at least I know she won't try to hurt you."
Twilight cried her eyes out embracing Sunset. Sunset hugged back.
"It's OK Twi, I knew from the minute we walked into your parent's house something was wrong. I knew it wasn't you and I knew I had to be careful. I admit I didn't expect her to control you without taking her own form, but I knew if she tried anything your body didn't want that you could stop her. I love you and I always will, you have your friends and most importantly you have me."
Sunset pulled Twilight's glasses off, wiped away her tears and kissed her passionately, the pair falling over onto the soft grass.
"I think that's our cue to leave wouldn't ya say gals?" Applejack noted.
The girls nodded in agreement and left for home again.
"Sunset, I think we should get home too. This last week has been memorable, and horrible. But I know these experiences have made us stronger not weaker. I'll always love you too."
Once the pair returned home Twilight walked up to Sunset rather nervously.
"Umm, Sunny. There's something I want to try with you."
"What's that Twi?"
"I-I think I'm finally ready. Ready for the next level of our relationship."
"Twilight, I know a lot has happened recently to bring us closer than ever, but are you absolutely sure?"
"I'm sure Sunset. I want this to be magical between us."
They climbed into bed together and sealed their night with a loving kiss, and an act reserved for those with a deep care and passion for each other.

New Year, New Experiences
The next few days saw an unbridled passion between Sunset and Twilight follow their every move. They had become closer than ever as a result of the past week and knew now that nothing could come between them. No matter how hard they fought, or how dark things got. They would always have each other.
As the calendar marked December 31st the two girls had planned to celebrate with their friends. Canterlot City did a beautiful fireworks display to bring in the new year and while it was always broadcast on TV, this year the girls had everything planned out ahead of time to see them live.
A Large hill overlooking Canterlot City just on the outskirts would be the perfect spot to set up a blanket and have the 8 friends see the majesty of the fireworks in person. Rarity was able to procure a large blanket and Rainbow Dash had somehow managed to obtain some alcohol, the rumors being it involved Fluttershy's brother Zephyr Breeze but neither girl said a thing.
"I've watched the display with my parents on TV every year without fail but this will be my first time seeing them in person." Twilight noted.
Sunset smiled at her. "Same here, and I'm glad we have our friends to celebrate with. After everything we've been through this year, moving in together, our first few months of college and now this whole last week. I think bringing in a new year can only be good for us."
Twilight smiled back. "Hey. It may not have been perfect but it did bring us closer together. I know we've only been officially dating for about a year now. But the time we spent as friends before that makes it feel like we've been together forever."
Sunset smirked and thought to herself. "Well if you say what I hope you will at the fireworks display. We can be together forever."
They packed some snacks into a backpack and put on their coats ready to leave for the hill before Sunset stopped.
"Wait Twi I forgot something, be right back."
Sunset ran into their room and produced from the back of the wardrobe a small black velvet box. She hid it in her pocket before returning to Twilight.
"Alright let's go."
The Christmas decor still lit up the streets and likely would for a least another week before the city took it down. It added a brightness to the evening that made the pair smile as they walked hand in hand to the hillside.
The girls were waiting and the blanket had been laid out with some drinks being opened already. The fireworks weren't due to start for another hour but they decided to meet earlier so they could hang out for a bit.
"Sunset and Twilight, so glad you could make it to our little get together." Rarity said smiling.
After a few drinks Twilight needed the bathroom and thankfully there were public restrooms not far. She left to use it and Sunset took the opportunity to tell the girls her plan.
"Hey girls. I have something planned tonight but I'm a little nervous about it. I'm going to propose."
Rarity almost fainted. Applejack caught her and gently lay her down on her own lap. Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy both looked shocked while Vinyl gave a huge grin and Pinkie a somehow even bigger grin.
"Well I think y'all can see what Rarity thinks. I think it's a great idea. This would be the final thing to bond you two together forever." Applejack said smiling.
Rainbow Dash was a little skeptical. "You two have only been dating for like, a year though. Isn't it a little too soon?"
"We've been through more in the span of a few years than most couples go through in their entire lives. I saved her from herself. We fought demons together, even as friends we were inseparable. We may only have been dating officially for about a year but we've been together far longer than that. Plus the things that happened between us in Equestria and here only made our bond grow stronger."
The most unlikely source of encouragement placed a white hand on her shoulder. Vinyl gave her a big smile.
"Look, I might not have been part of the group for as long as the rest of you. But anyone at CHS with a functioning pair of eyes could see you two were meant for each other the minute she transferred. She stood close to you anytime she had the chance to and I'd say she might've loved you before you even thought about having feelings for her. She'll say yes, she's gotta."
"Thanks Vinyl, you're right, we are meant to be together, and with this I hope we can be."
Rarity regained her composure and spoke. "But darling you're still in college, you cant exactly have married life while still studying can you?"
"The engagement can last as long as it needs to. I don't want to marry her right away, that will come when the time is right. Probably after we've finished college. I just want her to know that I never want to leave her side, and that I'll be hers now and forever."
Twilight returned and the girls chatted among themselves before Twilight noticed the time was 23:55.
"Girls! The fireworks will be up in 5 minutes. We need to get in a comfortable spot to see them."
The girls sat closer to their lovers and watched the night sky counting down when the time came.
"10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1. Happy New Year!" They all cheered as fireworks lit up the night sky. All of them embracing their partners with a loving kiss to bring in the new year. All except Sunset who turned to Twilight and produced the small box.
"Twilight Sparkle. We've been friends for years now, dating for around a year, and lovers for a few months since. I love you and I always will. No matter what tries to come between us I will stand by your side until the very end if it means you and I can be happy together. You're my whole world, and I never want to lose you, or to leave you. That's why I want you to know that I'll be yours forever, but I gotta ask you for the same thing." She opened the box to reveal a simple gold ring with a pink gemstone. "Twilight Sparkle, will you marry me?"
Twilight's jaw dropped, she stammered for a moment struggling to find the right words to say. But eventually she settled on.
"Yes, I will marry you Sunset Shimmer."
"We don't need a big fancy wedding, and I think we'd be wiser to wait till after college is done anyway. But with this ring I declare that I Sunset Shimmer will be yours now and forever."
"And I the same to you Sunset."
The two girls kissed as one final firework lit up the sky with a large heart shaped explosion. They knew this wasn't the end. It was a new beginning.
