//-------------------------------------------------------// A Chance of Rain -by Rainy Daze- //-------------------------------------------------------// //-------------------------------------------------------// Today's the Day //-------------------------------------------------------// Today's the Day Rainy was awoken by the bustling of ponies outside her window. She was lodging in a small room above the market square and had yet to adjust. She crawled to the other side of the bed and gently lifted the corner of the curtain to peer outside. She looked out with squinted eyes, noticed the overcast sky and quickly widened her gaze. It was still early, the sun had barely begun to rise and with the cloud cover it could easily be mistaken for evening. Rainy felt a mental sigh of relief, welcoming the weather she had grown accustomed back home. The warmer climate of Ponyville was beautiful in its own way but Rainy would always prefer a cloud filled sky. She turned back and slumped down to the floor, stretched her legs and arms with a yawn, and walked over to the breakfast tray, where her oats were waiting after their overnight soak. She prepared them into a quick oatmeal breakfast with blueberries and maple syrup. It was after the last spoonful the realisation had sunk in. Today was the day. She looked at the flyer on poking out beneath her tray, and felt a sinking feeling that dragged her mood down. The only way she was going to get through this was to just swallow her anxieties and force herself outside. Then take it one step at a time. She grabbed her hat and scarf, took a deep breath and made her way through the door. She hula hooped her scarf around her neck as she trotted down the stairs, as she passed by the innkeeper pony with whom she exchanged a meek smile before exiting with haste. She hurried down the cobbled street with a restrained cantor, panning her gaze to make sure she wasn’t sticking out too much. Thankfully the merchant ponies were all preoccupied setting up their stalls. Out of the market she passed by town hall where there was none but one bespectacled pony unlocking the front door. Rainy noticed this at the exact wrong moment as the pony happened to turn and see her. With the key still in her mouth she waved to the anxious pony. “Good morning!” Rainy spoke before she could think. A slightly too long “Hi.” Was all that came out, and she immediately followed by biting her bottom lip in a grimace. Then the thoughts crept to the front of her mind. “You sounded so awkward!”, “You’re meant to say ‘good morning’ back!”, “You weren’t loud enough, how was she supposed to hear you ?” Once she was clear of Ponyville proper she began to gallop down the country road. As if she could run away from her worries. She attempted to turn her attention to her surroundings. The autumn leaves stood out against the dim grey canvass of sky and every so often she could feel the crunch of one that had fallen beneath her hoof. There were tiny puddles down the length of the road with even larger ones to the side trailing into little streams down the embankment. “It must have rained last night.” She thought, sad that she had missed her namesake weather while she slept. She noticed a lack of birds chirping in the trees, and began to worry that her near-gallop would disturb the sleeping creatures. She quickly slowed down to an amble; paying close attention to the weight of her hooves with each step. Her stare fixed to the ground to make sure she didn’t accidentally snap a twig and startle anyone. With that she almost didn’t realise she was already at her destination: Sweet Feather Sanctuary. You could forgive her for barely noticing where she was. There was no sign to mark the entrance, nor any defining border at all. Rainy only recognised the sanctuary from her earlier, less successful attempts to complete her business here. She stood under an incongruous palm tree, taking in the surprisingly immense sanctuary. There were plenty of resting animals to see in their hammocks, nests, and burrows but not the pony she had come to speak with. Then she spotted the slightest movement of a door being opened by the waterfall. Out came a yellow pony, with full, bulging saddle bags hanging low from her back. She shut the door behind her and made way to begin her duties. She hadn’t noticed Rainy in the distance. Rainy thought of calling out to her, something to at least make her presence known. But naturally opted against it. Instead she sauntered across the open meadow toward her unsuspecting target. Rainy was still treading lightly from before, and Fluttershy was preoccupied with her charges. Leaving them each a special breakfast to aid in their recovery. Eventually they came upon a moderate cave; Fluttershy set down a large bag and unwrapped it, revealing a bundle of roots, berries and an assortment of grasses. “Good morning.” Cooed Fluttershy. “I have your favourite breakfast here for you.” She finished. A rustling was heard preceding the outcome of a large black bear, who immediately swooped up Fluttershy into a tight embrace. “Oh I missed you too. But come on now, it’s time to eat your breakfast.” The bear gently set down his caretaker, locking eyes with Rainy as he did. He looked back to Fluttershy and let out an inquisitive growl. “Who’s my new friend? What do you- Oh.” She said, turning to face behind her. “Uhh, hello there, can I help you with something?” She said with a smile, bringing the rest of her body around to face Rainy. “Yeah, sorry, I’m here about-” She rummaged around in the crevices of her scarf to find the flyer. “I thought I had it-” The flyer drops down and floats to Fluttershy on the breeze. She looked down and read the familiar words: ‘Winter Volunteer Wanted. Please enquire at Sweet Feather Sanctuary by the first week of autumn for training.’ “Oh I was worried no one was going to respond.” Said Fluttershy with delight. She looked up with a smile and endearing eyes. “When can you start?” Rainy was dumbstruck. She had expected some sort of vetting process, an interview at least. She hadn’t even asked for a name. “I uh- Whenever you need I suppose.” Replied Rainy. “Oh that’s wonderful. We can get started right away.” Said Fluttershy, approaching Rainy, eyes closed with a smile. “Don’t you need to-” Fluttershy trotted past Rainy. “Oh sorry, did you say something?”. Fluttershy turned back. Without thought Rainy replied. “No. Nothing.” Fluttershy smiled as Rainy proceeded to catch up with her. The two ponies trod along the beaten path through the forest. Each devoting their attention to the wild scenery surrounding them. Occasionally making awkward eye contact as they peered their gaze to look at the other side which they brushed off with amused smiles. Rainy wondered if she should try and make conversation, but things felt good the way they were. Their brisk pace brought them to a clearing, and Fluttershy guided Rainy to the store room she’d come out from before. Fluttershy opened the door for Rainy and followed her in. She walked past to a makeshift desk made from a stack of crates with a cloth tarp drawn over it. “So, this is where we keep all the supplies the animals need. There’s a chart over here on the back wall that shows where everything goes.” From a shelf she fished out a light green saddle bag, with Fluttershy’s cutie mark embroidered on the pouches, albeit much more luminescent and vibrant and in a striking high-quality thread. “This should be able to hold everything you’ll need, your to-do-list is already inside but I’ll help you out for the first few days of course.” She said while filling the bags with medicines and food. She handed the filled bag to Rainy who quickly threw it on. “Perfect!” Sang Fluttershy, who then clopped over to the door, with Rainy following suit. The pair trod through the sanctuary and Rainy received her first taste of training. Although, she was acting mostly as a pack mule as it were. Fluttershy explained that “It’s probably best you just observe for now. A lot of these critters are very nervous around new ponies and some of their treatments are very complicated if you haven’t had experience with them before.” Rainy could sense that Fluttershy was more anxious about a new pony taking care of her critters than the animals themselves. There was a slight nervousness in her voice, and she never took her eyes off the burrowed mice they were leaving food out for as she spoke. They finally began engaging in small talk as they travelled between duties. “So, would you like to tell me your name? It’s okay if you don’t.” Asked Fluttershy. Rainy was puzzled by the end of her question, but responded with haste. “Rainy, Rainy Day. But you can just call me Rainy if you like.” Fluttershy softly replied. “Oh that’s a wonderful name. You must be new to Ponyville?” Rainy felt struck, as she’d been caught committing a crime. “Uhh yeah. How could you tell?” The two stopped as Fluttershy flew up to feed some bird hatchlings. “I remember what it was like to be new here and also your accent is very unique.” She floated back to the ground. “I don’t suppose you’re from Trottingham are you?” She said with a curious look. “Uh, north of Trottingham actually. Trotland. Ponies there kinda really care about the difference.” Fluttershy’s eyes widened with embarrassment. “Oh no, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to insult you.” Rainy’s eyes too widened in embarrassment. “Oh no, it’s not a big deal honestly, no one really cares that much. It’s just a sort of joke back home.” Fluttershy let out a sigh of relief. “Oh phew. I was worried I might have offended you.” Rainy responded in kind. “I was worried I made you feel bad.” The two ponies stared at each other for a second, then began giggling. “I think you’ll get on just fine here.” //-------------------------------------------------------// Getting to Know //-------------------------------------------------------// Getting to Know The first day of training went by like a passing breeze. Once the ice had been broken Rainy and Fluttershy got along like a house like a house on fire. All Rainy had to do was watch her mentor with diligence. Fluttershy minded her student. “The first thing you need to learn is just how to be with them.” She smiled, petting the stroking the raccoon after dropping some medicine into his mouth. “They need to feel safe, and calm at all times." The raccoon's face started to squirm and he clutched his stomach. “Shhh, there there, it’s okay. Now sometimes they’ll start to feel a little distressed no matter what you do but that’s okay. You just need to be patient with them and assure them that it’ll be alright.” She continued stroking the sickly critter, letting him squeeze her hoof. Rainy was amazed at how intuitive it all was. It made remembering everything feel so easy. She thought she would take her weeks to pick up on everything, especially with the many and sometimes very exotic animals the sanctuary was home to. It helped that Fluttershy’s talk-throughs were a good reinforcement. They continued their chit-chat between charges. Fluttershy recounted a few of her past adventures with her friends which Rainy was more than familiar with but was happy to get it straight from the horse’s mouth. “So, what brings you to Ponyville?” Said Fluttershy, as they approached a burrow of hares. Rainy cringed a little inside, she wasn’t exactly jumping to tell her exactly what her practically pathetic reasons for travelling halfway across Equestria were. Then again, she knew that hiding the truth was a pointless endeavour. Nevertheless she replied with a compromise. “I guess you could say I was looking for a change of scenery.” Ending with a sheepish smile. Fluttershy gave an understanding look to Rainy and then turned away. “Seems like everypony is moving around these days.” She turned back to Rainy. “I remember when I made the decision to leave Cloudsdale. My parents kept asking me why I wanted to leave but I didn’t really have an answer for them.” She took a pause. “I knew why I wanted to go, but it felt like I was being so selfish. I love my family but back then I struggled a lot with expressing myself.” “Yeah I know what you mean.” Said Rainy. Fluttershy looked puzzled and Rainy thought she made a terrible mistake. “I mean I felt like that too when I was young.” She rushed. “I guess I still do sometimes.” She said with a nervous grin. Fluttershy finished her business with the newborn leverets and giggled. “I can see that.” She said to Rainy and the two carried on. Fluttershy looked to the sky. “I think my parents were worried I was going to be one of those pegasi who just fly away from home and never settle down.” She said making an exaggerated gesture in the air. Rainy thought for minutes inside a moment about that. A little smirk grew on Fluttershy’s face. “If you knew what I was like back then you'd probably find that funny.” Rainy pictured herself tugging at her scarf in nervousness. She was already fairly familiar with Fluttershy’s past. “It was the same back home.” She said following Fluttershy along the dirt path. “Not many ponies ever move away from Trottingham; Trotland’s even worse for that.” She looked down. Fluttershy was looking into the trees. “It’s funny, I’ve been all over Equestria but I’ve never been to Trottingham.” She said looking back to Rainy. Rainy looked up with a smirk. “There’s really not much reason to.” She said with earnest humour. Fluttershy smiled, and they came upon part of the stream far down from the waterfall. The water was rushing down but calm, letting out a soothing air of white noise. Rainy gasped with excitement. “I love streams.” She said. “I think they’re my favourite part of the forest, they’re just so… nice.” She felt stupid by the end of that sentence, but Fluttershy looked at her with a subtle delight. They wandered over to a paddling of ducks in the water, and Fluttershy called out for one, who swam up to the bank. She cradled the bird out and showed Rainy the broken wing. “These bandages can get loose over time especially when someone doesn’t follow their instructions to stay out of the water.” Said Fluttershy sounding slightly fed up. “You need to change them regularly so they stay taught and prevent the wing from twitching.” She said, removing the bandages with care then wrapping fresh ones around the fractured wing. “He's been here a little over a week so she should be ready to leave soon once she feels ready.” She said stroking the duck down to his tail feathers. Rainy felt phantom sensations down her own wing. She’d never broken a bone before and was very sensitive to certain body traumas. Fluttershy looked to the sky, and noted the position of the sun. “Oh my, it’s noon already.” She looked back to Rainy. “I think it’s about time we had a break don’t you? Believe me, you don’t want to take on this much work without a little rest.” She said with reminiscently. “Uhh, sure but I don't think I've really earned it have I? I am just watching you do everything after all.” Said Rainy in a glib tone. “Nonsense, this is a lot to take in all at once. It took me a long time to figure it all out.” Fluttershy cooed, beginning to walk back to the storage closet expecting Rainy to follow. Rainy trotted along after Fluttershy. “Well you didn’t have such a great teacher did you?” Fluttershy pondered that. “Oh no, that’s not entirely true. When I started I only had what the animals could communicate to me but they don’t always think like ponies do. They’re not always able to say something as exact as ‘I’ve broken a bone.’ or ‘I have a thorn stuck in my paw.’ Most of them can’t really understand the idea of illness. So early on I would just bring them to Dr. Fauna.” Rainy was amazed. “I thought you just always knew how to care for animals.” Fluttershy looked curious. “Well it doesn’t take much to know that every creature just wants a little kindness. But bandages and medicine are another thing entirely.” They came to the central pond of the sanctuary and Fluttershy ushered Rainy into the surprisingly spacious if not imposing stone room. Fluttershy walked behind her makeshift desk and held up a grocery bag. “I wasn’t expecting company today but thankfully we have plenty of food for the animals. I hope you like salads.” She said with a smile. “What pony doesn’t?” Replied Rainy, sauntering to the table. The two ponies sat on opposite ends of the pile of crates in disguise and shared lunch. Eventually, Rainy was subjected to something more akin to the interview she had expected from this visit. “So tell me Rainy, what made you want to volunteer? Said Fluttershy, taking a drink of water. Rainy answered honestly. “I’ve always loved animals.” She said. “In Trotland we don’t really keep wild creatures out of our towns like in other places, so I was always around animals growing up.” Fluttershy was intrigued. “I’ve never heard about that before.” “It’s not the same even down in Trottingham.” Said Rainy. “Most people don’t know much about Trotland. It's almost like it tries to stay secret. It’s all forests and mountains that make the villages feel like they’re hidden away or completely inaccessible.” Rainy continued. “It’s not a bad place to live though. Like I said the wildlife is amazing and all the creatures feel free and happy there." She looked down and smiled, then tilted back up. "I had a pet dog growing up. Her name was Storm Cloud.” Rainy looked into Fluttershy’s eyes. “Pegasi and weather names am I right?” Fluttershy giggled. “My father worked in the weather factory back in Cloudsdale. I know exactly what you mean.” Rainy rolled her eyes and shook her head. “My parents were both weather ponies. I never understood the appeal.” There was a slight pause, and then Fluttershy spoke. “What is it you do then?” Rainy dodged the question as if it were a bullet. “Oh wait! What was I? Oh yeah, Storm Cloud! You would have loved her; she was the most playful dog I’d ever seen. She adored ponies, she'd cuddle up with just about anybody.” Fluttershy smiled. “She sounds lovely.” Rainy smiled in kind. “Yeah, she really was.” They finished eating and tidied up. Then resupplied their saddle bags with what was needed for their rounds. Flluttershy talked her through their next tasks. “We’ll be dealing with some carnivores next but don’t worry, they’re just like any other creature we’ve taken care of.” Assured Fluttershy. They began the trip through the woods yet again. Rainy’s sides were beginning to twinge in pain from the hefty bags, now filled with more jars than food like before. She noticed that both her and Fluttershy’s bags were bulging. “So you usually have to do this all by yourself?” She asked. “Hmm?” Fluttershy then noticed Rainy gesturing to the saddle bags. “Oh yes well, it has been a bit busier this year but you’re the first volunteer I’ve had.” “You’ve never had any help before?” Asked Rainy, very confused. Fluttershy was amused. “Oh no of course not. My friends have come to help whenever I’ve needed, the sanctuary wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them.” She said with reminiscence in her voice. “Last winter was especially bad. There was an awful blizzard that displaced a lot of animals from their homes and they all came here.” Rainy’s heart raced with excitement. She was hearing about a completely new story of Fluttershy’s exploits. “Thankfully, with the help of my friends I was able to- Oh!” She exclaimed. “Looks like we’re here.” She gestured to a large hole covered by the dangling roots of a tree in the knoll. Fluttershy approached, gesturing for Rainy to hold back. She poked her head into the blackness. “Hi there precious, how are we feeling today?” Nothing was heard. Fluttershy peaked in closer. “Hi baby.” She spoke very softly. “Shh, shh it’s okay I know it feels bad but I have a student today and I was really hoping she could see how to take care of you.” She whispered. “Okay that’s just fine don’t you worry.” She came back out to Rainy. “I’m afraid she’s very embarrassed about being seen in this condition. She needs a minute to collect herself.” The two ponies stood with bated breath. Each staring silently into the darkness and then, before their eyes came out a limping wolf with her front left paw splinted. “I’m so proud of her.” Fluttershy whispered. Rainy felt her heart stirring as well. Fluttershy walked over and inspected the damage. “Her leg was broken very badly, Dr Fauna worked on it for hours.” She spoke quietly with the wolf, and walked back over to Rainy. “We need to give her something for the pain.” She said with a soreness. “She also needs something to help with the anxiety. She’s been a lone wolf all her life and doesn’t like not being able to defend herself.” She looked back to the hurt animal. “She said it’s okay for you to help.” Rainy’s heart sank. She was honoured by the prospect. “What do I do?” She asked. “Just walk over very calmly and I’ll do all the rest.” Said Fluttershy. They approached the aching wolf who stared down Rainy the whole time. Her heart was pounding, worried she might make a mistake. Her gaze was fixed to Fluttershy even as she fished out jars of Rainy’s bag. Fluttershy took a needle out from her own pouch and prepared the solution. “It’ll just be a little pinch and then it’ll all be over.” She said. Without realising, Rainy nodded in reassurance, causing the wolf to relax slightly. “My, you aren’t as tense as you usually are.” Said Fluttershy as she administered the injection. “There you go you can get back to resting now, we’ll bring you your dinner in the evening.” The wolf nuzzled at Fluttershy’s head, tussling her mane. “What’s that? Oh.” She looked to Rainy. “She wants to thank you too.” She smiled. Rainy was dumbstruck. She couldn’t keep her smile in. She instinctively stepped forward and received the same appreciation as Fluttershy, ending with the wolf shaking off Rainy’s scarf which had become draped over her head. The two ponies helped her back to her bed mat and let her be, and began their way to the next animal in need. Rainy was taking very deep but quiet breaths as they walked along. Fluttershy was worried she’d thrown her pupil into the deep end too soon. “Is everything okay?” Rainy responded without question. “That was one of the best things I have ever done." //-------------------------------------------------------// A Rainy Evening //-------------------------------------------------------// A Rainy Evening Evening was fast approaching and the pair of pegasi wandered back to the would-be office of Sweet Feather Sanctuary for the final time. They had just finished delivering meals for all the animals staying overnight. Neither were very tired but each were happy to finally be rid of full saddle bags for the night. The sky was a very dark grey, as if all the clouds from the morning had just stayed in place getting heavier and heavier. “Looks like it’ll rain tonight.” Fluttershy exclaimed. “We’d better finish up soon. The road back to Ponyville is no fun in a storm.” They entered the stone room and Rainy proceeded to take off her saddle bag and place it back where she'd seen Fluttershy fetch it from earlier. “Oh no, you don’t have to do that.” She cried. “Keep it! It’s the least I can offer to my first volunteer.” Rainy was over the moon, she loved surprise gifts. “Are you sure? I mean it has your cutie mark on it, isn’t it yours?” Rainy asked, feeling confused. “Oh no I’ve been using this old thing for years now.” She gestured at her own bag. “When I told my friend Rarity I was looking for a volunteer she wanted to design a whole uniform for them.” She rolled her eyes. “I told her that a uniform wasn’t the most practical idea for a sanctuary worker but she insisted.” She picked up the bag and handed it back to Rainy. “We settled on this as a compromise.” She said looking into Rainy’s eyes. Rainy graciously accepted the gift and Fluttershy draped it over Rainy’s back. She poked her wings out from under the strap and rested them over the pouches. She gave Fluttershy a nervous look. “I don’t like my wings being smushed.” Ending with an awkward smile. Then, she remembered. “Oh and thank you, really. This is one of the nicest things anyone’s ever gotten me.” She said with a touched look. “I’ll make it up to you I promise.” Fluttershy put her hoof on Rainy’s shoulder. “Honestly Rainy you don’t need to worry about that. Now come on it’ll be dark soon.” She said making her way to the door. Rainy followed closely. “I mean it’s not everyday you get a bespoke item from the famous designer Rarity.” She said trying to be casual. “I don’t think I've ever owned anything this posh.” She said thinking of the random patterned patches and loose threads of her scarf. She’d even been wearing the same faded lilac knit cap since she was a filly. She looked again at the bag, admiring the quality. The fabric was thick and durable but soft to the touch. The colours were vivid but subtle and the embroidery shone even in the dim light of a cloudy evening. “It’s really such a wonderful gift Fluttershy I can’t thank you enough.” “I’ll have to tell Rarity how much you like it the next time she visits.” She smiled. The two mares were now coming up on the edge of the sanctuary. Fluttershy looked back as they crossed onto the road with the slightest hint of concern in her eyes. Rainy wondered why she might be looking back and began to worry over the idea that Fluttershy was anxious about her disrupting the sanctuary’s routine. “I always lose sleep on nights like this.” Said Fluttershy. Rainy was confused. “I know they can handle a bit of bad weather but I just wish I could be there to make sure they’re okay.” Rainy felt a weight come off her shoulders and let out a sigh of relief. She looked to her mentor and saw her head hanging low. Rainy felt so sorry for her; a day was all it took to see just how important those animals were to her. She wanted to help her but she couldn’t really find what the problem was. She thought for a moment and realised there was nothing to say. Fluttershy would always find some reason to worry over her animals. She admired that in a way. “You inspire me Fluttershy” Said Rainy. “I’ve never seen anypony who would dedicate themselves to something like you do.” She took a deep breath. “I honestly don’t think you could do any more than you already have.” She said, looking to her mentor. Fluttershy poked her head up and looked at her student. “Thank you Rainy.” The worry vanished from her face. “That’s very kind of you to say.” “Don’t mention it.” Rainy smiled. The two ponies were keeping a steady pace down the road back to Ponyville, and a thought popped into Fluttershy’s head. “What are you doing for dinner tonight?” She said in a perky tone. “I was probably just gonna have some porridge in my room” Rainy replied. “Would you like to go out instead? My treat!” Fluttershy asked with a smile. Rainy was flabbergasted. She had no idea this was coming and had many questions on her mind but there was no way she was going to turn down such an offer. “Uhh sure! Wh-what were you thinking?” She stuttered, resisting the urge to smack her forehead. “What do you like?” Fluttershy enquired. Rainy didn’t know what to say. She had somewhat peculiar eating habits that she often felt judged for. She awkwardly asked. “Does anywhere do breakfast food?” Fluttershy thought and answered. “I think the Hay Burger does in the morning; I’m not sure if they’ll serve it now but we could try?” She asked with optimism. “I can’t wait!” Rainy said with glee before a drop of rain fell on her nose. “Oh.” Fluttershy felt the spattering of rain as well. “Maybe we should pick up the pace.” The two ponies began a gallop down the road, hooves splashing in the small puddles growing in the mud. Their coats were quickly saturated as the rain fell harder and harder. Rainy could barely see where she was running, all she could make out was the bright yellow pony in front of her. Her best bet was to stick as close to Fluttershy as she could. The wind began to blow them from the side, whipping Fluttershy’s mane into her face. At least she knew she hadn’t lost her guide in the storm. They soon came upon the outskirts of Ponyville which emanated a light orange glow in the dark. They clopped along the cobblestone paths as other ponies rushed about to take shelter; the rain was fast becoming a downpour. Fluttershy cried out to Rainy. “It’s just down this street!” Rainy followed her as close as she could, she could feel her wings brush against Fluttershy’s but could barely hear her as the rain smashed against the stone, ringing out like a snare drum. Finally they arrived at the Hay Burger. They took shelter under an awning above the door, both ponies completely drenched. Fluttershy’s tail had been dragging in the mud, thankfully the rain had washed it out. She squelched the water out of the lengths of her tail and mane. “I should really think about wearing my tail up.” Rainy plucked a few loose pink hairs off of her muzzle. “You might want to consider your mane as well.” She said with a jovial smile. Fluttershy blushed. The curls of Rainy’s mane were in complete disarray, she flattened them down with her hooves as best she could. She suddenly remembered the bags beneath her wings and was sure they'd be ruined. Luckily her wings had kept them bone dry. Both ponies shook themselves off and wiped their hooves before finally entering. Rainy held the door open for Fluttershy and they each trotted in out of the torrential weather. Rainy hung her hat and scarf on a stand to dry. She followed Fluttershy to a booth by a window. They settled in across from each other, Rainy scooting right up against the cold glass of the window pane, her breath fogging it up. She stared outside. “This looks nice.” Fluttershy was already looking at the menu. “Doesn’t it just? I’m not sure what to get.” Rainy turned around and realised she should follow Fluttershy’s lead. She sifted through the menus in the holder to find their breakfast items. Thankfully they had the one special she wanted: blueberry pancakes. A wide grin spread across her face. “Well I know what I’m getting.” She said looking up from her menu. ‘I just hope they’re still serving breakfast.’ she thought. Fluttershy set down her menu as she decided and looked at Rainy with a smile. “I’m so happy you decided to volunteer Rainy.” Rainy was glad to feel like she was on good terms with Fluttershy, but she had some niggling questions at the back of her mind. “I was wondering actually, how am I your first volunteer? I mean you’re Fluttershy. I would have thought you’d have ponies filling up the sanctuary looking for a chance to meet you.” Fluttershy was confused, and gave Rainy a very matter of fact answer. “I only put up one flyer.” Rainy looked at her completely bewildered and fluttershy giggled. “I only needed one volunteer.” Rainy remembered the day she found the flyer on a board in town square. It was practically buckling under the weight of posters and flyers pasted and pinned over each other. All save for a postcard sized flyer asking for volunteers stuck to an otherwise bare spot in the bottom corner. ‘That’s so her.’ She thought. Rainy opened her mouth to speak just as a server pony came to their table. “Good evenin’ girls, Ah’m Gingham Frill, I’ll be your server tonight. What can Ah get ya?” Asked the bubbly pony. Rainy and Fluttershy looked at each other, neither knowing who should order first. “I’ll have-” They spoke in unison and laughed. Fluttershy interjected. “I’ll go first, I think we could be here for hours otherwise.” She joked. “Could I have the spice pumpkin soup please?” She asked very politely. “Certainly, and you hon’? Rainy was worried she would look stupid but ordered her desire anyway. “Can I get the blueberry pancakes please?” She said demurely. “Of course sweetie. Drinks?” Fluttershy replied. “Just water for me please.” “I’ll have a cup of tea if that’s okay.” Said Rainy. “That’s perfect girls, your food’ll be ready soon, Ah’ll be back with your drinks in just a minute.” Said Gingham as she pocketed her pad and pencil in the pouch of her apron. “Tell me more about yourself Rainy.” Said Fluttershy as soon as the waitress had left. Rainy was caught completely off guard, she had no idea what to say. “What would you like to know?” She asked, afraid of what she might say. “Anything you want. I don’t want you feeling uncomfortable.” Fluttershy said in a sweet voice. ‘If only you knew.’ Rainy thought. “Well...” She looked up at Fluttershy, smiling and awaiting. She searched her mind for anything about herself that was worth talking about, but there was only one thing she could think of. “...I’m really happy I’ve met you Fluttershy.” The words came out with a surprising ease. Fluttershy’s heart sank, Rainy sounded as though she’d never met a pony in her life, and Fluttershy was the first to find her. “You’re so sweet Rainy.” She giggled. “Although that can’t be all there is to know about you can it?” Rainy realised that Fluttershy was determined to find out at least one new thing about her, and conceited defeat. “I don’t really know if there’s much to hear about me.” She said, eyes pacing slowly from side to side. She looked down at the menu she was fidgeting. “I grew up in a small village in the north-east of Trotland. It’s right in the middle of a huge forest but it’s pretty close to the seaside.” Gingham returned with their drinks on a tray. “One glass a’ water..” She set down the glass in front of Fluttershy. “...And one cup ‘a tea, piping hot; to keep ya warm. Ah’ll be back with your food in just a bit you two.” “Oh, you were saying?” Said Fluttershy in the most polite voice. Rainy scoured her head for another cliché. “I have a big sister, Sunny. She’s a unicorn. She takes after our dad and I take after mum.” She said attempting a chattier cadence. She dropped two sugar cubes in her tea and attempted a sip, but it was too hot for her liking. “I like to read, but I’m a bit behind since I can’t seem to find a library in Ponyville.” She said dumbfounded. “Oh no there is though.” Fluttershy chimed in. “A lot of ponies didn’t realise at first but Twilight’s old castle library has always been open for anypony to use.” She said cheerfully. “Oh I had no idea.” Rainy responded. “I know, they should really work on their advertising.” Rainy tried to stifle her laughter behind a grin but finally let out a hearty chuckle. “Thank you, thank you, you're too kind.” Blushed Fluttershy. There was a prolonged silence. The two mares sat merely enjoying each other’s company as the storm raged outside. Gingham approached the table again, this time with a bowl of soup and a stack of pancakes. “Looks like we’re all havin’ a good time here.” The mares smiled. Gingham served the food. “One spiced pumpkin soup…” She laid the bowl down. “...And one stack of blueberry pancakes. Enjoy your dinner girls.” She said with a smile and left. Fluttershy looked down at the creamy bowl of soup in front of her, steam rising in thick wisps up into her nose. She took a deep whiff. “Oh that smells wonderful.” Rainy’s mouth watered at the sight of the syrup drizzled delight before her. She plucked a single blueberry to enjoy which bursted with flavour. “Gosh I love blueberries so much.” She remarked. Fluttershy blew on a spoonful of her soup with a gentle, sustained breath, and finally swallowed a mouthful. There was no indication that she’d enjoyed it save for the tiniest of smiles between slurps. Rainy on the other hoof couldn’t hold back the pleasure she took in her meal. Each forkful nearly stuffing her face with an adequate amount of each ingredient. She quickly remembered her present company and reserved her behaviour accordingly. Still, she finished long before Fluttershy. Thankfully her tea had cooled enough for her to begin drinking. “Those must have been some very good pancakes.” Fluttershy observed. Rainy responded with a mortified grin. “I really like blueberries.” Rainy patiently waited for Fluttershy to finish. The two ponies sat across from each other, basking in the warm light of the lamps shining in from outside. The pattering of rain against the window the only sound in the silence. Rainy wiped the condensation from the glass to see through. The streets were covered in an inch of water, each raindrop let out an amazing splash as it hit the ground. She could see the inn down the street and thought that at least it wouldn’t be another long walk in the dripping wet to get back. Finally, she just stared, sipping her tea, looking out at the kinetic painting of the night. “Not what many ponies would call a lovely evening is it?” Fluttershy said. “I would.” Said Rainy turning back. “I would agree.” Replied Fluttershy leaning in. “All finished here girls?” Gingham unknowingly butted in. “Oh yes. Thank you, that was wonderful, wasn't it Rainy?” Fluttershy asked. “It was perfect.” Rainy smiled. “Glad to hear it, can I get y'all anythin’ else?” She asked. “I wouldn’t mind sticking around and sharing a pot of tea. How about you?” Author's Note This chapter was by far the most frustrating to write; it took the longest and went through a moderate rewriting phase. I'm still not quite sure about it but I'm publishing it in hopes of getting more feedback to help improve my writing. Either way I hope you've enjoyed it and feel free to comment! //-------------------------------------------------------// It's a Magical Place //-------------------------------------------------------// It's a Magical Place Rainy and Fluttershy sat in their booth. Gingham Frill had just brought them a pot of tea to share. “Good thing you girls got here when ya did. I don't think anybody else’ll be comin’ tonight.” She set down the teapot. “You two enjoy now.” She smiled and sashayed away. Fluttershy and Rainy thanked her as she left. The storm had grown worse, the wind whined with each gust that blew by. Fluttershy delicately poured herself a full cup and sweetened it with three sugar cubes. Rainy took the pot and poured one out for herself, finishing with two lumps of sugar. “Now where was I? Oh yes! So I flew calmly over to him, and he yelled something about ‘preparing to meet my doom’ but I wasn’t phased by it. I just asked him why he was chasing us.” She took a tiny sip of tea. “Leave it to Rainbow Dash to never try something like that.” She smiled. “Well Ahuizotl had the saddest story. Daring Do and Caballerron had been stealing the artifacts he was tasked with protecting, and all the other guardians were so upset with him. To make a long story short; we all came to an understanding.” Rainy sat dumbstruck, she’d been on the edge of her seat so long that she let her own cup of tea was barely tepid. “Now he’s a best-selling author of his own!” Fluttershy exclaimed gleefully. “He’s done so well for himself.” She said with pride. Rainy composed herself. “I’ve never heard about you meeting Daring Do before.” She said with awe. “I still keep in touch with Ahuizotl and Caballeron. They’ve become quite good friends actually.” She smiled, then sighed. “That was one of the last big adventures I had before the coronation.” She took a longer sip of her tea. “Times like that are few and far between these days. Of all my friends you’d think I’d be the least likely to miss it.” “Uh, I wouldn’t know.” Said Rainy, stalling at practically every syllable. She remembered the tea in her hooves and drank its whole contents in two long gulps. She poured herself a refill as Fluttershy spoke. “Of course not.” Fluttershy smiled. “Every now and then there’s some little occurrence here in Ponyville I’ve even been called out again by the map a few times but things have definitely quieted down lately.” She looked deep into her student’s eyes. “You don’t really notice these changes as they happen; it takes a while, then you look back and realise how different everything is.” Rainy felt those words deep in her heart. “You’ve thought about this a lot haven’t you?” “Yeah.” Fluttershy replied. She took a sip of her tea and said no more. “I sort of had the same thing back home.” Said Rainy, lacking confidence. “But all I realised was that everything stayed the same.” “You always want what you don’t have I suppose.” Fluttershy interjected, Rainy nearly shot her head up in surprise. Fluttershy was smiling, her mood apparently lifted. “I worry I spend too much time thinking about what could be different. Sometimes I wonder if Twilight would be happier back in Ponyville, working as a librarian in a new Golden Oaks.” She sipped her tea. “But then I think about someone like Rarity and how she always wanted to ‘shine all over Equestria.’” She smirked at herself. “More often than not, one pony can help you understand another. Even as our lives became so different my friends still helped me learn that change was a good thing for all of us.” “How?” Rainy was very intrigued. “They were all doing what they wanted to do with their lives. Rainbow Dash wanted to be a Wonderbolt since she was a filly, Pinkie wanted to be with Cheese Sandwich and Applejack is with her family.” She finished her cup. “Do you understand?” Rainy sat in her chair worrying over the question like a schoolpony. “I... I think so.” She said. “Did Twilight always want to rule Equestria?” She asked with a genuine curiosity. Fluttershy took a moment. “She always wanted to do the right thing.” Rainy was remarkably satisfied with that answer, but she noticed there was one pony unaccounted for. “What about you?” “Well I have the sanctuary.” When she spoke her voice had its usual brightness, but her face was listless. Rainy quickly developed her own thoughts on the benefits of change. “I suppose you get to wait and see what new changes will come, and hopefully they’ll be exactly what you need.” Rainy spoke the words with complete candor. Fluttershy smiled. “Exactly.” She looked at Rainy. “Like this.” Rainy wondered exactly what she meant by that, but was cut off as Fluttershy continued speaking. “I think I have a story you’ll really enjoy.” The two ponies laughed vigorously at Fluttershy’s anecdote, she wiped a tear from her eye. “So." She giggled. "That was my last Heath’s Warming!” She practically fell onto the table clutching her sides. Rainy leaned forward and put her head on the table to muffle her loud laughter. “I can’t believe all that went on right under the princess’s nose.” She poked her head up, but covered her face with both hooves. They were both managing to repress their howling for now. “If only she’d been sticking it around the right places!” The raucous laughter began again. Fluttershy had capsized onto her side and Rainy pressed her hoof to her mouth to try and stifle her outburst to no avail. “I just hope she doesn’t decree it an official holiday tradition.” Rainy joked. Fluttershy’s eyes widened in feigned fear, receiving a laugh from Rainy in return. Once the energy had subsided Fluttershy inspected the teapot, now empty. “How about another?” She asked. “Still my treat!” Rainy nodded her head affirmatively. “Great, I'll go get a refill.” Fluttershy left the table with the empty pot, and quickly returned with a full replacement. She sat back in their booth and courteously poured a cup for Rainy and then herself. Rainy held her cup tightly, enjoying the feel of the warmth in her hooves. The two ponies sat quietly, with nothing but a pot of tea and the sound of rain pelting against the window between them. Fluttershy stirred a splash of milk into her tea. “I’m not sure this storm’s going to get better anytime soon.” She blew the rising steam from her cup and lifted it for a sip. “Thank goodness this place stays open so late.” She looked around. The diner was empty save for two pegasi, Gingham Frill and ostensibly the chef. “Although it does feel awkward to be the only ponies in here.” She looked back at Rainy with lips sealed in a display of self-consciousness. Rainy smiled at Fluttershy’s open display of emotion. She took a small sip of her tea, hoping to make it last. “I don’t suppose you live close by, do you ?” Fluttershy let out a deep exhale that became a chuckle. “Nope.” She looked at Rainy with a resigned but humourful expression. Rainy thought the situation was far more grim than Fluttershy meant and wore this worry on her face. “I’ll be fine Rainy there’s no need to worry.” She reached her hoof over the table to Rainy’s and looked at her as if to say ‘I can handle a little rain sweetie.’ Rainy looked down into her cup, focusing on the dancing vapour emanating from the tea. “I just wish I had room to offer you; I’m only down the street.” She looked out the window and rubbed out a small circle in the mist, the inn was now even harder to make out in detail. All she had to know it was there was the faint orange glow of the lamplight above the door. Fluttershy chimed in. “I don’t think you’ll fare much better than me on the walk home tonight.” Rainy looked back. “It’s not so bad being stuck here with me is it?” She said with a coy disposition. Rainy wasn’t going to be victim to such an obvious ploy. “You stop that now Fluttershy. I’m not falling for that again.” She took a big gulp of her tea, anticipating that she would likely waste it again if she didn't drink it quickly. Fluttershy giggled. “I’m sorry, I can’t resist.” She smiled. “I don’t meet many new people and everyone in Ponyville seems to have gotten used to the fact that I’m not as shy as I used to be.” She took a long sip of her tea. “Whenever I travel I’ll sometimes meet someone who read Twilight’s book and thinks they have to tread so lightly around me; it’s actually quite funny.” She looked down wistfully. “I can’t believe how much I’ve changed since then.” The mention of the book distressed Rainy. She wished she had her scarf to tug on. She almost didn’t notice that Fluttershy had continued speaking. “It might be time to put out another one.” She posited. “We’ve done so much more since the first and maybe I won’t be hounded for not changing enough.” She said quite glibly. She shook out the irritation and looked calmer. “Then again Twilight is very busy and I don’t really see the rest of my friends being all that interested in chancing a repeat of the last incident.” She trailed off into a chuckle. “I shouldn’t laugh but you should’ve seen them. Rarity went completely off the walls, Applejack ran away from home and Rainbow Dash… Hmm, well she actually got off easy now that I think about it.” She squinted her eyes in a grumpy expression. “And each of us had our share of strange ponies who thought they had this right to us based on a silly book… I suppose Applejack got the worst of that though.” She looked at a sullen Rainy. “Is everything okay?” Rainy thought about what Fluttershy had said, the ponies she was talking about, and how she might as well be one of them. She looked up at the pony she respected and thought about how much her opinion meant to her, and how wrong it was to be doing this.To be having such a good time under these false pretences. It wasn't lying exactly but it felt like it. She was about to open her mouth, then hesitated, then carried on. “I… I read your book.” She was completely despondent. Feeling like she’d confessed to some mortal sin. She fixed her stare to the table, unable to look at Fluttershy. “So?” Fluttershy asked. “I mean I suspected as much.” She said in a soothing tone. “You did?” Rainy looked up, her sullen expression remaining. “Well there were a few clues dear. You acted a little strange whenever I brought up something about my adventures, you were ‘inspired’ by a day of watching me pat a few animals with tummy aches on the back, and…” A little smirk grew on her face. “...You have this... thing you do with your scarf. You even make the same face when you're not wearing it.” Rainy’s face turned red with embarrassment. “You might have been doing it whenever I brought up my past.” Fluttershy looked away, as if she herself was embarrassed. " For a moment, there was silence. “I’m sorry.” The words spilled out of Rainy’s mouth. “For what?” Rainy had been thinking about this all day. How wrong it all was, what a weirdo she was, how pathetic she was. “I’m just like all those other weirdos you were complaining about.” She paused, Fluttershy was just about to say something before Rainy continued. “I didn’t mean to, I promise it’s not like that. I just thought…” She let out a heavy sigh. “...I just thought that maybe this town… had something about it.” She squeezed herself into the corner of the booth and looked out the window. “I tried everything back home but I never found anything that worked. The whole time I was there it just felt wrong. No one ever leaves because they’re just content to live the same way they always have and never change anything.” She paused. “I thought here it would be different. So much magic happened here. I just thought that maybe seeing it for myself would help somehow.” Rainy paused and Fluttershy opened her mouth but Rainy had one last thing to say. “I don’t know what I was thinking.” The words tapered out into mumbles by the end. “It is magical isn’t it?” Fluttershy looked at the dour pony across from her. “I’ve always felt that there’s something special about Ponyville” She scooted along the bench to be opposite Rainy. “I think certain places do have a special energy and that they can conflict with our own sometimes.” She placed her hoof on Rainy’s arm. “I felt like that about Cloudsdale.” She had her own sullen look now. “Some places just don’t allow for certain ponies to flourish like they’re meant to. I had to come here to do that, I wouldn’t have been able to do it back home.” Rainy didn’t have anything to say. She was trying her hardest to just stop thinking. “When my friends started moving on, I thought the magic went with them.” She tugged on Rainy’s arm to get her attention. “But you proved to me that it’s still here. There are still so many new and wonderful experiences to have, and it doesn’t matter if a silly old book is what brings them here.” Rainy looked at her mentor. “You’re still my friend Rainy. " Rainy felt the dread flush out of her chest and the worry pour from her mind. Fluttershy made everything feel okay. "You're really good at this kindness thing." She joked. "I can't believe how much better I feel." Fluttershy smiled. "I'm glad to hear it." She picked up her cup. "I would hate to lose my only volunteer on her first day." She took a sip and noticed Rainy's exaggerated surly expression once she lowered the cup. "I'm sorry." She blushed. Rainy smiled and they both chuckled. "This was one heck of a night." //-------------------------------------------------------// Breakfast at Gingham's //-------------------------------------------------------// Breakfast at Gingham's It was now late into the evening and both Fluttershy and Rainy decided it was time to brave the storm and head home. Fluttershy paid the check at the counter while Rainy collected her scarf and hat from the stand. “Hope you two had a lovely evenin’.” Said Gingham to Fluttershy. “It was wonderful, thank you.” Fluttershy replied sweetly before making her way to the door. “You all set?” Fluttershy asked, approaching Rainy. Rainy smiled and nodded. “I guess we’re doing this then.” She smiled feebly, Rainy responded in kind. She went to open the door and the ponies were bid adieu by the pony who’d been serving them. “You girls come back anytime now!” Gingham waved to her customers. The two ponies looked back and smiled. “I’m sure we will.” Said Fluttershy, looking at Rainy. The two pegasi walked out of the diner to the awaiting storm and prepared themselves beneath the awning. Rainy pulled her hat down snug and wrapped her scarf round tightly. Lastly she made sure to protect her new saddle bag with cover from her wings. “Same time at the sanctuary tomorrow, okay?” Fluttershy reminded her volunteer. “I’ll be there, don't worry.” Rainy replied. She looked down the street and could see her destination through the spitting rainfall. She looked at Fluttershy and tried to alleviate the tension. “Looks like it’s let up a little.” She said feebly. It may have been true but it wouldn’t change the fact that Fluttershy had a long walk in the storm ahead of her. “I’ll be fine Rainy, honest.” Fluttershy assured her. “Thank you for tonight, it was really lovely.” She was unsure if her last word was appropriate but meant it all the same. “Don’t mention it. Now you should be getting to bed, we have an early day tomorrow.” Fluttershy said in a soothing tone. “Okay I’ll jus-” Fluttershy hugged her friend, and Rainy reciprocated, after a brief moment of shock. “Run along home now.” Her words were almost sickly-sweet. “O- Okay.” Rainy was extremely flustered by the sudden affection. She did as her friend told her and began a gallop down the street. Fluttershy stayed back and waved her friend goodbye, even though she wouldn’t see. Rainy was no stranger to a trip in a storm. Back home inclement weather was the norm. She rushed down the empty street, hooves sounding off as they clipped the stone, nothing but a dim lamp in the distance as her guide. She followed it through squinted eyes and found her way back easily enough. She looked back at the Hay Burger to see that Fluttershy was gone, and promptly entered the inn. “Oh dearie, get in here, come on! How long you been out in that storm, you’ve been gone all day?!” The inn pony rushed out from behind her podium to help Rainy. Rainy didn’t want a fuss being made over her. “It’s okay I was just at the Hay Burger, I was only out in the rain for a minute.” “It’s a doozy of a storm tonight, just a minute and you can still come down with something.” The inn pony said very matronly. “You head straight to your room and bundle up, I’ll get the kettle going for a cup of tea.” Rainy’s eyes spread wide across her face, she had had enough tea for the night. “Um, that’s okay honest. I think we went through two pots back there.” She laughed nervously. “Ooh, ‘we’ ya say?” She smiled. Rainy looked bashful. “Oh I won’t pry, don't worry, now off to bed with you.” She practically shooed Rainy up the stairs. Rainy climbed the remaining two flights to the third floor where her room was. She turned the knob to her humble lodgings and threw off her hat and scarf onto the stand by the door. She took off her new bags with care and set them down on the table. She quickly closed the door and got her towel from the radiator to dry off starting with her face, chest, body and lastly, legs. She surveyed her room from the centre, was satisfied she hadn’t forgotten anything and immediately fell face first into her bed. She wanted to let out a scream into her pillow but couldn’t find the energy to do it. It felt like she was now an outside observer to the events of her day. She scrutinised every little detail from when she left the inn to when she and Fluttershy departed. The agonising embarrassment from all of her mishaps was all she thought about for her few final waking moments of the night, as she quickly fell asleep face down in her pillow. The next day came bright and early, unlike Rainy. The purple pegasus was in a particularly prickly mood from sleeping on her front side all night. She’d forgotten to draw the curtains before bed and was practically disgusted by the sunshine pouring into her room, thankfully this was incentive enough to get her up. She crawled across her bed to the window and looked outside. The rainwater sparkled in the sunshine and the air was fuming with the scent of morning dew, the ambience was very refreshing and helped kick-start Rainy’s brain. She turned around and got out of bed to have some breakfast. “Darn.” Rainy exclaimed angrily. She had forgotten to soak a bowl of oats overnight and she wasn’t set up to cook them in her room. She sighed in defeat and looked at the time on her clock. ‘It’s only seven o’clock.’ She thought, and then remembered there was a diner serving breakfast right up the street from her. “I have time.” She exclaimed with excitement. She grabbed her hat and scarf in a dash for the door, then remembered her new bags. She rushed back in to grab them and was out the door again, throwing the items on as she clopped down the stairs. “Early start again?” Said the inn pony coming out from the parlour doorway. Rainy felt a rush of confidence flow through her body and out of her mouth. “Big day ahead of me!” She spoke the words with a smile and was out the door. It was a straight shot to the diner and the trip was much less eventful this time. Water pooled in the seams between the cobblestones and all of Ponyville seemed to glisten in the sun. Rainy wasn’t the biggest fan of sunny days but she could still appreciate this. The rain had dampened everything through the night and made it all appear a few shades darker which she felt complimented the sunshine better. The flowers in the street and window boxes seemed more vibrant and vivid with little droplets hanging off their petals. Rainy would have splashed through a few of the puddles were she not about to go inside again. She trotted beneath the awning where a few drops of rain fell down onto the nape of her tail sending a shiver up her back. She wiped the wetness off her feet and opened the door accompanied by the ring of a bell. The diner was a much busier than the night before; mostly elderly ponies catching the early bird special. She wandered over to a stool at the counter and was greeted by a familiar face. “Well good mornin’ missy!” Said the bubbly Gingham. “Glad to see ya back so soon, what can Ah get ya?” She pulled her pad and pencil from the pouch in her apron. “Don’t suppose you want another round o’ pancakes do ya?” She said jovially. Rainy did but she knew it would leave her loggy for the rest of the morning. She smiled at Gingham. “I do but I have a busy day ahead so I probably shouldn’t.” “Aw well don’t you fret, this here menu’s chock-full o’ health food perfect for fuelin' a busy day thanks to your’s truly.” She smiled with pride holding a one-sheet menu. “Might Ah recommend the ‘banana-rama oatmeal delight’? It’s got rustic steel-cut oats, sliced bananas, cinnamon, an incy bit o’ brown sugar all topped off with a dollop o’ fat-free yoghurt.” Rainy could tell Gingham really wanted her to try the dish, it sounded delicious regardless. “I’d love to try it.” “Hoowee! That’s what Ah like to hear, Ah’ll have it right out for ya!” She didn’t even write it down, she just spun around and made her way into the kitchen. Rainy looked round the diner. She was sat right next to a display cabinet of muffins and deserts. She noticed that most of the other diners were eating the likes of hash browns, eggs benedict and even the occasional hayburger. Her wait wasn’t long as Gingham quickly returned with a white bowl and a spoon. “Here ya go hun’! One banana-rama delight!” She set it down on the counter in front of Rainy. “Thank you so much for orderin’ it darlin’, Ah only get to make whatever’s on the healthy menu.” “It looks delightful.” Rainy gave her a pleased smile. Gingham stood with her hooves held together in anticipation of Rainy’s reaction. She grabbed the spoon poking out from the porridge and procured a bite with every ingredient. Delightful was the right word. “This is delicious Gingham-” She realised she might be acting a little too familiar. “Aw shucks darlin’ you’re too kind.” She rested over the counter. “Don’t believe Ah got your name last night?” “Rainy Day, but you can call me Rainy.” She said modestly. “Pleased to make your acquaintance.” Gingham smiled. “Ah ain’t seen you ‘round here before. An’ your accent almost sticks out worse than mine! Where ya from if ya don’t mind me askin’?” ‘Just say Trottingham.’ Rainy thought to herself. “Trottingham.” She said in a half-truth. Gingham looked puzzled. “Really? Ah woulda pegged you for a Trotland pony, what with the tartan scarf an’ all.” She said sounding very astute. “Not many ponies know about Trotland.” She finished with a nervous chuckle, feeling like she’d been caught in a lie. She quelled her anxieties with spoonfuls of porridge. “Well those ponies are missing out if ya ask me. Ah can’t get enough o’ that plaid y’all got there. It ain’t too dissimilar to gingham don’t ya know.” Gingham said with great excitement. Rainy was amazed that someone was actually interested in Trotland fashion. She swallowed the porridge in her mouth to speak. “I’ve never met anyone who knew even that much about Trotland before.” “Ah’m a pony of what ya might call eclectic tastes. Everybody always said so back home.” She smiled which then became a pondering look. “Well actually they weren’t exactly usin’ words like ‘eclectic’ but that’s what they meant.” She looked cheerful. “I get what you mean, believe me.” She said with a mutual understanding. She spooned up her last mouthful of porridge and swallowed. “That was just lovely, thank you so much.” Rainy said with delight. “Why thank you sweetie. It’s good to hear somepony appreciate my health food.” Her eyes peered as if she were looking at someone behind her. “What’s this busy day you have ahead got in store for you then?” Rainy felt happy to share. “Oh I’m volunteering at Fluttershy’s animal shelter.” Gingham looked as though she’d just cracked an intensely difficult code. “Oh o’course, you two were in here last night together. Ah just thought that maybe you two were uhm… ya know, on a sorta…” Rainy was puzzled for a moment before realising what Gingham was hinting at. “Oh no! It’s not like that. She was just treating me to dinner after my first day of work, honestly it’s nothing like that.” Rainy was flushed with embarrassment. Gingham scrunched her mouth and squinted her eyes before releasing her face to a more casual expression. “If ya say so! Ah’m not one to speculate about such things. Rainy felt relieved. “So you’re volunteerin’ at Fluttershy’s sanctuary? Ah’m an apprentice over at her friend Rarity’s boutique!” “Oh, so you work for Rarity?” Rainy enquired. Gingham looked slightly disparaged but she brushed it off with a smile. “Me workin’ for Rarity? Wouldn’t that be somethin’!” She chuckled. “Naw, Ah’m just part of an apprenticeship programme she’s runnin’ out o’ her home boutique. Supposedly she does review each an’ every application personally, bless her. Can’t be easy work what with her runnin’ boutiques all over Equestria.” Rainy was impressed. “You must have done amazing work to get her attention.” Gingham blushed. “Oh you flatterer. Ah was worried my ideas weren’t gonna fit to her tastes; It wouldn’t be the first time, so Ah was pretty surprised when Ah got in.” Rainy thought about the matter for a second. “I suppose sometimes it’s better to stand out when everyone else is clear;y trying to fit in.” She said, almost reluctantly. “Ain’t that the truth! ‘Be yourself’ that’s always been mah motto! Looks like we got that in common.” Rainy smiled nervously. Gingham looked round the diner and sighed. “Ah better be gettin’ back to work. Ah’ll just leave your bill, feel free to stick around though.” She winked and went about bussing tables. Rainy wished she could stay but always liked to be more than early for anything she was expected at. She left the money for the bill and left a generous tip for Gingham. She trotted out of the diner and made her way through Ponyville to Sweet Feathers. //-------------------------------------------------------// Hearth and Home //-------------------------------------------------------// Hearth and Home Rainy clopped along the road to Sweet Feathers at a modest pace. The leaves strewn along the ground were all soaked and matted to the dirt, depriving Rainy of their satisfying crunch beneath her hooves. The clear sky shimmered in the many puddles down the embankments. She entered the thicket that led to the sanctuary, with shafts of light coming through the canopy that pulsed and dissipated as the gentle breeze shook the trees. The long grass felt cold brushing against her legs. She came upon the clearing to the waterfall and saw Fluttershy floating down like a falling leaf to the stream’s edge. She caught a glimpse of Rainy and waved from a distance. Rainy waved back and flapped her wings for take off to shorten the trip across the stream. She landed delicately on the edge of its bank and gave Fluttershy a chirpy greeting. “Good morning!” “Good morning!” Replied Fluttershy in kind with a sweet smile. “I see we’re an early bird today.” “I like to make sure I’ll be on time when someone expects me.” Said Rainy avoiding eye contact with Fluttershy. “Perfect, we can just get started a little sooner then!” She said with glee. “Let’s get all packed up and we can start the breakfast deliveries.” Fluttershy said, turning toward the supply room. Rainy followed with diligence. Fluttershy pushed open the large wooden door and walked over to a shelf. She began to scoop little amounts of food pellets into tiny paper bags. “Could you pack the saddle pouches while I do this please?” She mumbled, still holding the scooper in her mouth. Rainy nevertheless understood the request and approached the table of crates and threw her own bag on top next to Fluttershy’s. She went about filling the pouches with each bag Fluttershy had completed. The room felt different from yesterday. She seemed to take in more details this time, noticing that the tarp covering the crates was practically falling off one edge and the ends cascaded over the floor in crumpled piles. The jars on the shelves were all crooked, knocked over, many were even empty. The only section still in order seemed to be the medicines and first-aid supplies. Quickly the bags were packed and the ponies were on their way. The schedule was the same as yesterday’s, Fluttershy mentioned that none of the animals were likely to leave soon amidst last night’s poor weather. Rainy had taken to the sanctuary’s routine like a duck to water and they quickly finished with most of the animals roosting in the immediate area. Last on the the list was the otter den which Rainy approached with great enthusiasm which seemed to unnerve the critters inside. Her heart sank as she realised they were refusing to come out. Fluttershy came over once she realised what the situation was. “I know you’re eager but some of these critters still have to get used to having a new pony around.” She placed her hoof on Rainy’s shoulder. “Don’t feel bad you’re not doing anything wrong, these things just take time.” Rainy took the reassurance to heart and nodded in agreement. “Come on out you two, it’s only me and a new friend.” Fluttershy cooed. The two ponies were welcomed to the sight of the two otters, one with a slight bump on her belly. Fluttershy poured out their food. “They’re expecting.” She said with excitement spread across her face. Rainy smiled in kind. “That’s so precious, how far along is she?” Rainy enquired. Following Fluttershy as they began to walk back to the supply room. “It’s hard to say since she was already pregnant when she came but I’m thinking a month and a half or so. We should have a litter of pups in just a couple of weeks.” Fluttershy’s face beamed. Rainy and Fluttershy finished the rest of their work without incident. Some of the animals had even already begun to remember Rainy and were very accommodating to their new caretaker. The two ponies swapped stories as they travelled back and forth to resupply with mutual enthusiasm. Fluttershy’s were of adventures big and small, the latter of which Rainy appreciated given the meagre nature of her tales from back home. The wolf from the day before was in much higher spirits which warmed Rainy’s heart to see. She was even treated to a few licks right in the face from her. She remarked that she was 'Just a bigger version of Storm Cloud.' Eventually the day was done and the two friends headed back to drop off the supplies and be on their way home. Rainy followed Fluttershy as they trudged through the doorway of the supply room. Fluttershy let out a sigh as she entered, Rainy assumed it must have just been from exhaustion. Fluttershy threw her bag onto the table and emptied its contents, empty feeders and bags mostly. Rainy did the same and proceeded to go about putting the items back in their place by going to the back wall to consult the directory. “Oh no you don’t need to worry about that, I’ll take care of it.” Called Fluttershy from behind. Rainy turned with a sense of shock. “Are you sure? I don’t mind.” She responded. “I let it get like this in the first place, it’s not your mess to clean.” Fluttershy said with a diffidence. Rainy walked over to her. “I don’t mind Fluttershy, honest. I actually kinda love tidying, it’s like... satisfying you know?” She smiled. “Besides two ponies’ll get it done in no time.” Fluttershy smiled and nodded in agreement and they set about reorganising the disarrayed room. “I meant to tell you, I’m taking some of the animals to the friendship school for a class tomorrow and I was wondering if you wouldn’t mind helping me take them there?” Asked Fluttershy as she swept up a pile of disused baggies. “Huh?” Rainy was writing a label for a food jar, she released the pen from the grip of her mouth. “Anything you say boss.” She raised her hoof in exaggerated salute and Fluttershy giggled. “Thank you Rainy, you can just take the rest of the day off until I get back from teaching.” Said Fluttershy. They continued their work and Rainy took it upon herself to make small additions to the room’s planning. She added labels to the jars, grouped items together in old milk crates, and neatly boxed the tarp over the crates among many other small details. “Oh my.” Gasped Fluttershy at the immaculate display. “Where did you learn to do that with the table cloth?” She asked, closely admiring the new neatness of the 'table'. Rainy took pride in her work. “I may or may not have been a hostess back home.” She said with a feigned modesty. Fluttershy was beside herself with gratitude. “I can’t remember the last time the place was this clean. Thank you so much.” Rainy blushed. “It’s nothing honestly.” Fluttershy felt a need to show her thanks and hugged her new friend. “I couldn't ask for a better volunteer.” Rainy blushed even more. “Come on now you’ve spent more than enough time here today.” The pair of pegasi proceeded to prepare for the trip home. Rainy threw her new bags over her back and wrapped her scarf round tight in preparation for the chilly autumn evening. The sky was a bright orange, with blue mixing in at the periphery as the sun began to set. There still wasn't a cloud to be seen. The road to town had dried slightly as the day passed but it was cold to the touch. Rainy and Fluttershy shared the walk for a short while before Fluttershy broke off to return home. She mentioned having plans with a friend for dinner. “I’ll see you tomorrow!” Cried Fluttershy as she trotted down the alternate path at the edge of town. “Bright and early!” Rainy cried out in kind. She passed through the streets of Ponyville with a calm gait. She felt mellow, which was a welcome treat. There were more ponies walking around tonight, leaving her feeling a little self-conscious. Soon enough she’d arrived at the inn. She went into the reception room, a large and welcoming space lit by a gently roaring fire. It had a rustic charm, old-fashioned wallpaper, slightly gaudy picture frames, and antique furniture; all well maintained. There was a familiar silver maned pony sat on the chaise lounge reading a newspaper. Rainy sat in the armchair by the window, she took in a deep breath of the warm air which felt strange going down her throat having just come out of the cold. There was quiet for all but the crackling fire and rustling of newspaper. The Mayor looked up from her paper once Rainy had settled and gave a polite smile. Rainy responded in kind. “Lovely night isn’t it?” She asked. Rainy rushed to formulate a reply in her head. “Oh, yeah.” She fumbled out. “Couldn’t agree more." The Mayor softly replied. “I love a crisp autumn evening, only wish I could be out to enjoy it more.” She peered over her paper. “I’m always going back and forth from somewhere or another.” She said with a jovially dour expression. Rainy wondered what to say. “Oh, I’m sorry.” She said, with a rising intonation, almost like a question. The Mayor smiled. “Just part of the job, keeps me on my hooves at least.” She set her paper down beside her to look at the pony she was conversing with. “Oh! I remember you, you're that pony I saw outside town hall the other morning.” Rainy faltered to respond, her head preoccupied with the memory of her embarrassing attempt at a greeting from that encounter. “Uhh…” “I don’t believe we’ve met before, I’m Mayor Mare and you are?” She smiled awaiting a reply. ‘At least I can answer that.’ Rainy thought. “Rainy, Rainy Day.” She answered. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Miss Day. What brings you to Ponyville?” The Mayor asked. Rainy racked her brain to find a concise explanation. She must have taken too long or shown her distress more than she thought since the Mayor quickly retracted on her question. “My apologies, I don’t mean to intrude. I just try to get to know everypony in town, if only a little bit. Part of being a good mayor if you ask me.” The Mayor said feeling like she’d put her hoof in her mouth. Rainy rushed to correct her. “No, no I’m sorry, it’s not like that! I’m just not the best speaker. I’m volunteering at Sweet Feathers.” The Mayor had an insightful smile on her face. “Oh I’m sure that’s a match made in heaven.” Rainy wondered what she meant by that. “I know she’s really come out of her shell but to me, Fluttershy will always be that timid filly I met all those years ago.” She giggled. “Oh it must have been days after she first arrived before I even got her name. How does that story go again...” ‘Oh. I see what she means. Two introverted ponies trying to work together. Hilarious.’ Rainy thought to herself. She almost missed that the Mayor had continued speaking. “...And then I finally realised that she was saying ‘Fluttershy’! I don’t think I’ve met a pony with a voice so quiet since. To think, all that just to get her name.” She let out a hearty chuckle. “Sorry I do go on a bit. You said you were volunteering at her animal sanctuary?” Asked the Mayor. “Well, I only started yesterday, I just got back from there actually.” Rainy thought for something interesting to say but failed to find any. Thankfully she was saved by the inn pony’s abrupt entrance. “Sorry to leave ya waiting there Mayor Mare I oughtta keep the books more organised don’t ya know.” She chuckled, trotting through the cased opening to the parlour. “Looks like we’ll be fairly open come Nightmare Night so I can get all your relations separate rooms if ya like?” “That’s wonderful Hearth. If you could book that for me that would be lovely.” Said the Mayor. “Consider it done Miss Mayor, anything else I can do for ya now?” Hearth asked. The Mayor got out from her seat. “Oh no that’s everything thank you. I do apologise but I must be off, Ponyville never rests these days.” “Oh don’t I know it! Sorry again for keepin’ ya.” Said Hearth as she escorted the Mayor out the parlour. “It’s quite all right Hearth, Miss Day here has kept me company.” She turned back to look at Rainy. “It was lovely meeting you dear.” Rainy smiled. “You too, Miss Mayor.” Hearth ushered the Mayor to the door. “Oh and give my best to Humble won’t you?” “I will Miss Mayor, see ya later now!” Chirped Hearth. She quickly returned to the parlour. “Sorry dearie, were ya wanting something to eat now?” She asked Rainy. “Uhm, yeah just a bowl of porridge please if that’s okay?” Rainy replied. Hearth smiled. “Sure thing sweetie I’ll get the other half on it right away.” She left the parlour for the kitchen. Rainy sat in her seat, admiring the soft glow of the fire. She noticed some of the photographs framed on the mantle. A few looked old and faded but in a place of prominence she saw a large shot of what must have been the whole town at the time. Rainy noted Fluttershy and her friends featured front and centre. ‘Princess Twilight doesn’t even have her wings.’ She thought. “That’s Humble working on your dinner sweetie.” Said Hearth as she entered the parlour, she picked up the newspaper from the chaise, folded it neatly and set it down on the coffee table before stoking the fire. Rainy saw a tired look in Hearth’s eyes. She hadn’t had a proper conversation with her host in the week she’d been staying at her inn. Her stomach churned with tremendous guilt at the thought. It was enough to cause her to blurt out the first thing she could think of. “Your husband’s name is Humble?” Hearth spun round with surprise. It was clear she was caught off-guard by Rainy's sudden loquacity. Still she was happy to oblige. “Oh you haven’t met him have you? Well sure that’s how the inn got its name!” Rainy quickly realised the connection, while also feeling more guilt churning in her stomach. She hadn’t known either of her hosts’ full names yet. “Ohh ‘The Humble Hearth’ I see.” She smiled. Hearth smiled back. “Owned and operated by Hearth Keeper and Humble Abode.” She said as she sat down on the sofa across from Rainy. “It’s good to hear you talk dear.” Rainy responded with an awkward smile. “Sorry, I can’t help but worry about a young girl in a new town. I always worry about our younger guests, especially when they’ve come as far as yourself.” She rolled her eyes. “Humble says I border on intruding on other ponies' business but I just want to let them know I’m here if they need someone.” Rainy respected Hearth’s caring nature. She had an embarrassed smile on her face. “I may have looked a little strange when you did it but I always appreciated your smiles in the morning.” Hearth’s heart was warmed by the sentiment. “I knew you were a good one when I first saw ya! You remind me of the kinda ponies we used to get way back when. Didn’t used to get these tourist types, ‘course that all changed when that castle came up out of the ground and then there’s that friendship school!” She emphasised with an exaggerated gesture. “Don’t get me wrong, business is business I know, I just get a little nostalgic sometimes.” Rainy was intrigued. “How do you mean?” Hearth responded with gusto. “Oh I don’t know. It was a little more… spontaneous would be the word I suppose. Ya can tell when someone’s just here for the sights and attractions. Used to be I had no idea what somepony’s business was until I spoke to them. Ya had merchant ponies coming to sell their wares, postal ponies staying the night before the trip home, your ponies who travelled just for travelling’s sake. Used to get the best stories from all of them.” ‘How do I remind her of any of those ponies.’ Rainy wondered in her head. “My favourite will always be the ones who stayed before settling into town. Felt like I was getting the first pick of the newcomers.” She smiled. “We had Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie when they first moved here don’t ya know!” Rainy was surprised. “No I didn’t.” “Mm-hmm. ‘Course it’s all different these days. It’s a lot easier to move in for the few ponies that do and most of the new faces that stick around are students at the school so they all got rooms there.” Hearth seemed to trail off. Rainy didn’t know what to say. She just felt sorry. “You never know.” Hearth looked up. “It might change again.” It looked as though Hearth’s spirits were raised, if only a little. “I suppose it always comes when ya least expect it!” She got up from her chair. “Anyway I’ve been yammering on long enough don’t ya think? I’ll go see how Humble’s getting on with your dinner. You want me to send that up to your room dear?” “No.” Rainy replied immediately. “I’ll stay here if you don’t mind?”
