1.2 - Cognition

The soft beeping of a heart monitor slowly is what slowly brought me back to the land of the living. To say I was surprised would probably be an understatement, with the number of gashes and cuts I had received I was certain I was on a one-way trip to the afterlife.

But then again, they did have magic on hand so I guess anything is up for grabs really.

My eyes began to crack open, but instantly I shut them in pain when the shearing light of day practically boiled my eyeballs. Taking a few seconds to adjust my eyes slowly to the light shining through the window I started taking stock of my surroundings.

Looking around told me I was definitely in some form of hospital room, the various medical equipment I couldn't be asked to identify gave it way. Even more obvious was that I had been placed in a child's room. The wall was littered with various cutesy paintings, each showing scenes of undistinct foals prancing around a field of flowers.

Looking down at myself confirmed the unfortunate fact that my body was still that of a foal. I had kinda hoped that whole thing had just been some kind of nightmare after I...

After I...

A shiver ran down my spine as I pushed those memories away, it wasn't the time to have a panic attack. Instead, I quickly looked for something to distract myself and soon found myself scurrying towards the end of the bed to grab a clipboard that was likely some kind of medical diagnosis. It would be good to see what kind of ideas they had bouncing around in their heads, maybe I could play off one to avoid any kind of questions.

My hand reached out towards the clipboard and then my brain skipped a step when I couldn't pick up the clipboard in my han-

Right. Not a human, a pony, ponies don't get finger and rhumbs... just stumpy hooves. Needed to remember that.

Taking a quick calming breath I took a look at my pink fur-wrapped hooves. Rubbing one of my hooves on the other I found that my fur felt wonderfully soft, like I was touching a really soft mattress except not as squishy.

Shaking those thoughts out of my mind I looked back at the clipboard wondering exactly how I was supposed to use my hooves to hold things? I thought about it for around a minute before giving up and defaulting to the obviously superior option.

Why use hooves when you had magic fucking powers?

Staring intently at the clipboard I tried thinking back to that desperate fight with the timberwolf. It had all been rather quick but from what I remembered I had simply been desperate for some kind of weapon and something had... flipped for lack of a better word, in my head. All of a sudden it had felt like I had a third arm and it had been connected to the rock.

So I did that, I focused on wanting to hold that clipboard. Above all else, I needed that clipboard. There was nothing more important than my current need to bring that clipboard closer to me so I ca-

Abruptly I found myself rocking back, covering my nose in pain. Opening my eyes I could see the clipboard was floating in front of me, held within a faded red aura.

A smile broke out on my lips, perfect.

Bringing the clipboard slightly closer, I started reading. Unfortunately, I literally couldn't make out anything of importance in the jumble of horrible handwriting and nonsensical seeming medical jargon. My smile slipped from my face and I put the useless thing back where I found it before falling onto my back and staring up at the ceiling.

Christ, what was I gonna do? They would obviously have questions and I didn't even know how much time I had left before they checked up on me. There was no way I was gonna be honest with them, I was already getting ideas with what little magic I could do and some of those probably wouldn't be very "legal".

Of course, that's when the door quietly swings open and a large, to my eyes anyway, white pony with a striking pink mane made her way into my room. She was busy looking at a clipboard that was wrapped up in one of her hooves somehow without causing her any balance problems.

Briefly, her eyes glanced up at me before almost immediately snapping back down to the clipboard in her hoof. Then she seemed to pause for a second before dropping her clipboard noisily onto the floor. I flinched a little at the noise, which she saw, and then began to spout and mumble apologies about.

"Oh my Celestia, I'm so sorry dear I thought you were still asleep! We didn't think you'd be awake already oh sweet Celestia I'm so sorry hun!"

Irritated with her babbling I just waved a hoof at her and grunted.

"Is'fine" I paused for a second as what came out was not my voice but a small squeaky voice that I couldn't almost call cute if it didn't give me a feeling of wrongness when it came out of my mouth. A shiver went down my spine at the brief reminder that this wasn't my body, but some the body of a small pony.

I flinched slightly as I felt something soft run gently down my back, looking up I saw the nurse pony looking at me with a face full of concern and pity. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't just a little bit irritated by that.

"Shhh, it's okay hun. Your safe here okay?" She paused, probably waiting for some kind of response. I gave her a brief nod if only to assure her and make sure she doesn't pester me about it. She smiles brightly at me and then begins talking again.

"Well sweetheart, would you mind if I asked you a couple of questions? I bet you are still pretty tired so I promise I will be real quick okay?" She said with a beaming smile pointed at me.

I fidgeted in place, well aware that this was the moment whether or not I got asked a question I just wouldn't be able to answer. I was never the best of liars and I wasn't sure I'd be able to come up with something that would satisfy the nurse.

Thinking quickly I came with a fairly easy plan of action. Don't say anything, or at least don't say anything for the questions I didn't want to answer.

Looking up to the nurse pony I gave a small, hesitant nod.

God, I hoped they wouldn't put me with some kind of foster family or something. It might be easier if they just shove me into some kind of orphanage instead.
