Spring had arrived and it was my final year in high school. Graduation was less than a month away and all I could think of was graduating, getting away from CHS and hopefully getting a job somewhere that I wouldn't have to be around many people. I had no plans on going to college and I had already been contemplating working in the oil fields out to the east of Dodge Junction. If not there, I'd likely apply at the local call center because talking to people on the phone isn't nearly as unnerving as having to talk to people face to face.
One thing that was coming up for most everyone was the spring formal, the biggest and most romantic dance of the school year. While most students were looking forward to it, it wasn't really even on my radar. Many students would be taking their special someone, some single students were going hoping to maybe find a special someone but me? I simply didn't care to go. I had never gone to any of the dances and even if I would have, I'd be too shy to even approach a girl and ask her for a dance, much less trying to grow close to anyone.
While I had never had any desire to go to a dance, two weeks before the event I began hearing a voice in my mind telling me to go. I had had those voices in my mind before and one time it told me not to go out of town and because I listened to it, I wound up avoiding being involved in a multi-car pileup on the highway. Of course that was over something completely different. That was involving something that could be life or death while this simply involved going to a dance.
Finally after six days of hearing this voice non-stop, I finally decided to buy a ticket to go to the dance and then went out to rent a tuxedo for the dance. This was one thing that would set me back financially but I knew that it was something that had to be done. Once I got it rented, the voice relented somewhat but it was still clearly there and it was annoying the hell out of me.
When the day arrived for the dance, I didn't feel the same sense of enthusiasm that other students at CHS felt. For them, it was an exciting event while for me it was simply something I was doing to shut up the voice in the back of my head. I spent a fair amount of the day watching sports to clear my mind before getting ready to go.
When the time to go came, I was fully dressed and headed off to the school. As I was headed there, I began to get nervous. I had never went to any of the dances and knew I would likely wind up being asked why I went and that was something that I was in absolutely no mood to deal with. Dealing with the people I went to school with on a daily basis was enough of a pain but at an event I had never gone to before, it would likely be all the worse.
When I arrived and head in, it was as one would expect a formal dance. Fancy decorations, everyone dressed to the nines and no fast dance music playing. The atmosphere was full of romance and attempts to find romance. Those were things that I had only seen on the TV and that was just in passing when I was looking for something better to watch, which would be almost anything.
I took a seat in an area where there were not many people, a place where I could more or less just blend into the surroundings and hope that no one would question me over my presence. It wouldn't be long until one of the most popular students, Flash Sentry, would approach me and gasp, "Luke, what are you doing here? You never come to dances."
Flash was probably the only nice popular guy so I figured I'd at least answer him, "Oh I just decided I needed a change of pace."
"Well it is good to see you here." he replied.
He then went off to mingle with some of the more popular girls, leaving me to my solitude. I watched where he headed and it was to hang out with those popular girls, the ones in that band called the Rainbooms. I never had really interacted with any of them much outside of when we had to work together on class projects. With them though was Pinkie's fraternal twin sister, Marble Pie.
I had also worked with her on a class project once and while I had always been the shy type and described as anti-social by some, her shyness made me look like a social butterfly. With her, it was a matter of Pinkie always doing the talking for her as she would simply say "Mhmm."
I'll admit, the very first time I interacted with her and she did that, I found it incredibly annoying but after interacting with her a few more times, I began to find it cute. Out of all the girls, if there was one that I would ever even think about maybe asking to dance, it would be her. There were two things that prevented me from doing so though. One thing was my fear of rejection and the other was Pinkie. Yes Pinkie was a bubbly, fun loving girl but she was also very protective of her and what if she worried I may do something to her or that I simply wasn't good enough for her?
Ultimately though I would be shocked when I saw Flash point in my direction and then Pinkie and Marble headed in my direction. I immediately began to wonder if maybe Flash thought that perhaps Marble and I would be good for one another. When the two approached me Pinkie immediately gave me the same cheerful greeting she does everyone, "Oh hi Luke, how's it going?"
I replied, "Oh it's going alright, how about you?"
She then decided to introduce her sister, "Luke, I don't know if you know her or not but this is my baby sister Marble who is just a few minutes younger than me." She then turned to Marble and continued, "It's really nice to see Luke here isn't it?"
Marble replied, "Mhmm."
That night Marble looked stunning. Like she does at school, she wore her hair to where it covered one side of her face but the dress she was wearing was stunning. It was purple, a purple that matched those beautiful eyes of hers. The dress was a bit snug, revealing her figure and the one thing that I tried my hardest to not let anyone see me looking at were her breasts. Given that she always wore oversized shirts I never knew how large they were but her dress revealed their size and I will say this, they are big and sexy.
I would then be surprised when Pinkie would add, "Luke, Marble wants to dance!"
She then turned to Marble causing her to reply, "Mhmm!"
Marble and I then went out to the dance floor right as a slow song began to play. She quickly grabbed a hold of me and we began to dance. I stood only a bit taller than her so we were gazing into one another's eyes. I was very nervous, wondering if she really did want to dance with me or if she was doing so because Pinkie wanted her to. I couldn't just dance with her in complete silence so I decided to try and begin a conversation,
"Nice day, isn't it?"
"Mhmm!"
Given her answer and everything I knew about her, I knew the only way to really have a back and forth conversation with her was to ask yes or no questions.
"So are you looking forward to graduation?"
"Mhmm."
I paused for a moment trying to think of everything I could and discuss with her through such a limited way in doing so. I knew it would be tough on me since I'm the type that likes to have detailed conversations with the very few friends I have and those I associate with in general.
"So are you doing well in your classes?"
"Mhmm."
"So do you plan on leaving Canterlot after you graduate?"
She shook her head no and I continued, "I'm thinking of leaving town and going to Dodge Junction to work in the oil fields." She immediately gave me a frown and shook her head no again. I then continued, "Or I might work at the local call center."
She then gave me a smile, "Mhmm!"
I wasn't sure why she reacted so negatively to when I brought up moving to Dodge Junction to work in the oil fields and then more positively when I brought up the call center. Before we knew it the song was over but Marble kept a tight hold on me and as the next song began, another slow one, we began to dance to it as well.
During that second song, she gazed deeply into my eyes and I was very quickly lost in them. I had always found her eyes beautiful and did often make eye contact with her, even from afar. Soon she would begin to smile and gave off a gentle hum. It was at that moment that I began to wonder if this was much more than her only dancing with me because Pinkie suggested it.
As this was crossing my mind, she tightened her hold on me further and had pressed us completely up against one another. I decided to reciprocate the action until we were holding one another equally as tight. Our faces were close together, so close that we could feel the breath of the other. I had always found Marble attractive and as we continued to dance, song after song, I began to wonder if maybe she didn't find me attractive as well.
After what was likely three hours of non-stop dancing on our part, the music stopped and then an announcement was made. They began to announce the royalty for the dance. This was something that I was completely unfamiliar with given I had never been to any school dance. I remembered how the whole place went quiet when they announced,
"The spring formal queen is Marble Pie and the spring formal king is Luke!"
The whole place erupted in cheers and I felt myself being squeezed tightly by Marble. I immediate thought was, "That has to be some sort of mistake! I'm not even popular, how could I possibly win this?"
They then announced that it was time for the song for the queen and king. The moment it started out, I knew it was an incredibly romantic song. As the lyrics began Marble developed what looked like a loving smile and I immediately felt the same thing developing on my face. During the middle of the song when it got slower and the lyrics got the sappiest, she began to move in for a kiss.
I was shocked that she would do this right in the school gymnasium, especially given how shy she was. Just before our lips met, we parted them so that our tongues could meet. As our lips met, it felt like a slice of heaven. Her lips tasted sweet and once our tongues began their love dance, it was all the sweeter.
As we deepened our kiss, we had our eyes closed but I could tell that everyone else was standing to the side watching us dance. I wasn't sure exactly what kind of thoughts were running through her mind but the moment our lips met, I fell for her. I developed feelings of love for the girl who talked so little and I had this feeling that she had likely developed the same feelings for me. Given her nature, if that was the case, I wasn't sure how she'd tell me but I knew that she'd likely have her own special way.
As it was getting later into the song, she broke the kiss and looked lovingly into my eyes. I returned the loving look and would be shocked by what I would hear next, "Luke, I love you. Would you be my boyfriend?"
I was in a state of shock because all almost everyone had ever heard from her was, "Mhmm." I realized that she must truly have strong feelings of love for her to come out and say it. I then replied, "I love you too Marble and yes I'll be your boyfriend."
We then engaged in a deep, passionate kiss with everyone watching. Everyone began to cheer loudly but neither one of us thought much of it. What mattered to the two of us was one another. When the song finally ended, we decided to leave the dance floor and immediately went to where her sister and Flash Sentry were there waiting with huge smiles on their faces.
The first to say anything was Pinkie, "Marble, do you have a boyfriend now?"
She exclaimed, "Mhmm!"
I then turned to Flash and asked, "Did you two set it up to where we'd win king and queen? Were you two behind this?"
Both Flash and Pinkie had smiles on their faces, which Marble and I both knew meant that they did. I felt like we didn't really earn it but when I saw Marble rush Pinkie and give her a tight embrace, that no longer mattered to me. What mattered was that Marble was happy. Flash would then say, "You know Luke, I have a feeling you two will be the perfect couple. I know neither of you are real big on interacting with others but you'll have one another and that will be more than enough for both of you."
I replied, "You're right man, you're right. As long as her and I have one another, we'll be happy."
By this point they finally began to play some faster music so Marble and I took a seat and put our arms around one another. We turned to where we were facing one another and just sat there, smiling at one another. I wasn't exactly sure what the future would hold for us but I did know one thing, as long as we had one another, we would be happy.
