He’d never truly realized how disconcerting silence could be until the only sounds left were those of his hoofsteps reverberating against the empty castle walls. He had been told to wait in the royal corridor a good fifteen minutes ago, meaning the Princess of Friendship was now ten minutes late for the meeting he thought he’d scheduled well in advance. His anxiety was beginning to skyrocket from the anticipation, and the silence wasn’t making it any better. Had he messed up on one of the forms he’d needed to get a hearing with Princess Twilight? Was there some kind of mix-up, and now he’d have to come back another day? He had to admit, it was kind of surprising that the Princess was meeting with him at all, but now that he thought about it, was she just going to turn him down once she found out that he was just a regular, not-so-important stallion?
Before his jitters could lead him any further down the rabbit hole of his own self-doubt, however, the large double doors of the royal throne room slowly began to open, revealing a teenage dragon emerging from the other side. “Princess Twilight is ready to see you Mister… Uh… ‘My OC’?”
The dragon then looked up at the golden brown stallion with an eyebrow raised in confusion, but the pony, however, exhaled a deep breath of relief, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. “Oh, thank goodness. Yup! That’s me! My OC!”
“Any uh… story behind that name?”
“Yeah, my parents were both fanfic writers. You see, they both really wanted to create the perfect original character, and here I am! Not that I’m perfect or anything. Just a regular stallion from Ponyville!”
“...Your parents named you ‘My OC’?”
“Yeah, but you can call me Orange. Otherwise the joke would get old super quick.”
The dragon squinted his eyes, scratching his head as if he were trying (and failing) to understand what the joke was supposed to be, but with a shrug of his shoulders, he pushed the large door open further, inviting the stallion into the throne room. “Alright. Princess Twilight’s ready to see you now.”
Orange bowed his head with a humble grin and slowly began trotting down a long red carpet, leading him straight to the Princess’s throne at the other end of the room. She looked so different from when she first moved to Ponyville, now with slightly longer legs and a lengthy, flowing mane, but he couldn’t help but smile knowing that this was still the same Twilight as always. He’d never actually met her in person (or in pony, idfk), but he’d always admired her ever since he was a colt and heard the stories of how she defeated Nightmare Moon. Now she had taken the place of Princess Celestia herself, and he was beyond thrilled to finally get the chance to meet her face to face.
“Hello, there!” the Princess said with painfully forced joyfulness. “You’ll have to forgive me. Spike told me what your name was earlier, but I think I might have misheard him. Let’s just do some introductions real quick. My name is Twilight Sparkle, and your name is…?”
Twilight was obviously doing her best to smile, but even her best attempts couldn’t hide the cringe in her face. “Oh, don’t worry about it! Ponies get my name wrong all the time. My name is My OC, but you can call me Orange!”
“Er… Orange?”
“Yeah, it’s related to my character. I promise.”
Twilight continued to stare at the stallion with her head tilted to the side, waiting for a punchline, but after a few moments of waiting uncomfortably, she finally realized that there was no punchline. This wasn’t a joke. At least, if it was, it was created by people who severely lacked creativity.
“O-oh! OK, Orange. What can I do to help you?”
Finally, the moment he’d been waiting for his whole life. “Well, you see, Princess… the reason I go by the name Orange is because I love honey!”
“OK!”
“And honey is orange!”
“...Yes, it is!”
“And I was hoping you could help me get all the honey I could ever eat!”
“...Uhhhhhh… I don’t know if I’d be able to help you with that…”
Orange chuckled into his hooves at Twilight’s predictable response. He knew something like this would come up, which was why he’d already come up with the perfect plan that would be sure to impress Twilight with his forethought and preparedness. He’d spent his whole life dreaming of this moment, after all, and he wasn’t about to let this precious opportunity slip away from him quite so easily.
“Actually,” he began, “I think you can!” Twilight’s face contorted into an uncomfortable grimace, but once she heard his plan, she’d realize that he was actually a genius. “You see, Princess, I know of a place that has limitless storages of honey, and I just need your help with one simple thing.”
“OK…? And what would that be?”
“You just have to make me really small!” Twilight squinted her eyes similar to how Spike did earlier, which obviously meant that she was completely blown away by the brilliance of his plan. “If you can make me the size of a bee, then I can go to one of their hives and enjoy all the honey I could ever eat! It’s a win-win for everypony!”
"Win-win?” Twilight asked, her face scrunching up with skepticism. “Wait... How does this benefit anypony but you?"
Orange looked around the room for an answer as a drawn-out "Uhhhhhhhhhhhh" filled the awkward silence. "Because… well… I mean… I really love honey?"
Again, the alicorn waited in silence for a punchline, but when she was sure that this wasn’t a joke, she simply let out a heavy sigh, giving the stallion the most sympathetic look she could. “Well, I certainly admire your tenacity in seeking a meeting with me today. However, about your request--”
Before she could continue any further, however, a gryphon in heavy armor charged through the double doors, flying urgently with panic written all over his face. Orange couldn’t help but frown upon seeing the meeting he’d been waiting for for weeks interrupted after just a few minutes, but if it were something this serious, he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t at least a little curious as to what was going on.
“Your highness!”
“Yes, Gallus? What seems to be the problem?”
Gallus then descended to the floor, bowing his head both in reverence as well as to catch his breath. “It’s the bugbear again! It’s wreaking havoc in Canterlot as we speak!”
“What?! How does this keep happening?!” Twilight then brought her hoof to her chin, looking off to the corner of the throne room as she lost herself in deep concentration. “If only there were somepony who could keep an eye on it.”
“Princess,” Gallus continued, “this may seem out of line, but would it really be that big a deal if we just… squished it?”
“WHAT?!”
“Of course, I don’t mean to offend--”
“You’re telling us to murder it!”
“But… it is dangerous, Princess.”
“Yeah, and so were gryphons until we sent friendship to Griffonstone! What, should we have just squished you guys too?”
“I--I’m sorry, Your Highness. I spoke out of line.”
“Did you want us to murder Grandpa Gruff, Gallus?! Would that have made you happy?! Because it would have made me happy!”
Finally, the royal guard lifted his head with contempt in his eyes. "With all due respect, Princess, some things just aren't meant to be friends with us. You might as well ask us to spread friendship to, I dunno, mosquitoes or something!"
Suddenly, Twilight's eyes went wide. "Or bees?" she said hurriedly.
"Well, I, uh, what--" Gallus stammered before giving up and nodding. "Yeah, I guess?"
"Ah-HAH! And if I can teach bees friendship, then you won't squish the bugbear?"
"I'm already not going to, because those are your orders. But it's already destroyed three--"
"Thank you, Gallus! That will be all. You are dismissed."
After a few moments with his mouth slack-jawed in confusion, Gallus sighed heavily and left the throne room in a hurry, mumbling something about “too many Royal Guardsponies dying” or something stupid that had nothing to do with honey.
Orange himself wasn't sure what just happened, but when Twilight turned towards him with a sly, deviant grin on her face, he could already feel it in his bones.
Whatever this was... it was gonna be amazing.
“Thanks for bringing us here, Fluttershy,” Twilight said, followed by a light nod from the yellow pegasus.
“Oh, it’s no problem. This is by far the most active beehive in all of Ponyville, so if you’re looking to start spreading relations to the hornet colonies, this would most definitely be the best place to start, and don’t worry. I’ve already let them know you were coming.”
Orange was only half-listening to the two mares as they exchanged formalities, more focused instead on the egg-shaped cavern hanging off of a nearby tree branch. The stallion licked his lips of any excess drool pooling out of his mouth, ignoring the swarms of bugs zipping in and out of the hive’s opening as he fantasized about the treasure within. He was so close to living out his childhood dream. Soon, his parents would realize that having a Sonic the Hedgehog cutie mark didn’t automatically mean that his entire worth in life was being someone else’s original character.
In just a few, painstakingly long moments, he would do what he was meant to do. This was his destiny.
“I only wish you could have been the one picked out for this mission,” Twilight continued, trying not to look Orange in the eye.
“Oh, no!” Fluttershy replied. “This kind of mission requires somepony to stay within the hive for as long as possible! With the amount of bees that work together to keep a colony running--and that’s not including how many don’t make it through Winter Wrap Up--I would expect that Orange would probably need to live here, at least for a little while. I’m just surprised that you got somepony willing to do the job.”
Twilight again glanced at the stallion licking his lip before turning back towards her pegasus friend. “Trust me. He wasn’t my first choice. Are you sure you don’t wanna just try?”
“I’d love to, Twilight. I really would, but I need to make sure all my animals are taken care of. I’m sure your new friend would be perfect for the job, though. Just look how excited he is!”
A short glance from Twilight revealed Orange, transfixed on the nearby hive, with a long strand of drool running from the corner of his mouth to the dirt below.
“He’s only doing it for the honey!!” Twilight shouted.
“Did somepony say honey?”
“Not now, Orange! We’re talking!”
Fluttershy switched glances between Orange and Twilight, shrugging her shoulders in defeat. “I honestly don’t know what to say, Twilight. I may not be the best judge of character, but if Orange is going to spend his life as a bee, I think we should support that decision, especially if it ends up helping all of Equestria.”
“How is he going to do that?! Last I checked, earth ponies aren’t exactly the best at flying, let alone being useful to an entire hornet colony!” Fluttershy immediately cringed, discreetly pointing in Orange’s direction, and following the direction of her hoof, she noticed that Orange was actually paying attention, making Twilight flinch in surprise. “Ack! I mean, not that there’s anything wrong with earth ponies. I’m sure you’re good at lots of things!”
“Princess Twilight?”
“I promise I don’t think that earth ponies are the inferior subspecies! I have lots of earth pony friends, you know!”
“Princess Twilight!”
“Look, all I’m saying is that maybe we should stop and consider why the overall GDP produced by unicorns is higher on average. Just saying there’s two sides to every story.”
“Princess Twilight!!” The alicorn then stopped talking long enough to notice the impatient look on the stallion’s face as he gently nudged his head towards the beehive. “Am I good? Can I go now?”
The princess shrunk into her shoulders, blushing profusely while avoiding the judgmental eyes of her pegasus friend who also contributed plenty to Equestria’s GDP. Then, coughing awkwardly into her hoof, she regained her composure enough to gently reply, “Yes. Let me just prepare the miniaturization spell really quick, and then we’ll have Fluttershy introduce you to the queen of the hive.”
Orange’s smile practically broke through his cheeks. As Twilight’s horn began to glow a bright shade of magenta, the golden brown stallion jumped up and down, laughing giddily while imagining what his new life would look like. Would the bees let him eat to his heart’s content before getting down to foreign affairs? Would they be so grateful to have a new visitor that they would shower him with honey the moment he set hoof in their hive? That’s how Orange had always imagined the situation playing out in his head, that bees produced honey specifically for the enjoyment of ponies, and they were lucky just to have somepony who valued their craft as much as he did. There was no way he could be wrong about something this important, right?
“Here it goes! This might sting a little!”
“Heheh. Bee joke.”
Only it wasn’t a bee joke. In the next moment, Orange’s entire body was hit with a spell that crushed his atoms together, causing him to yell out in pain as his bones and organs caved in, filling him with an agony he’d never experienced. It was so alarming that he didn’t even realize that his voice was ascending in pitch or that the individual blades of grass were now curving around his hooves. By the time he finally had the strength to open his eyes again, both Fluttershy and Twilight had disappeared, and he was suddenly surrounded by a forest that hadn’t been there a minute ago.
“Orange?”
“Ow! My ears! F[copyright Hasbro]k that hurts!” The stallion quickly put his hooves over his ears to block out the sudden booming sounds coming from above, glancing up towards the sky once he was finished grimacing. There, standing above him was Princess Twilight, only she had turned into a giantess that completely blocked out the sun, her eyebrow raised as she looked around for the tiny earth pony.
“There you are! Oops. I forgot that your tiny eardrums probably can’t handle the volume of a regular voice anymore, aaaaand I’m probably making things worse for you right now, aren’t I? Here. Let me fix that real quick.”
Orange was now rolling on the floor, screaming as loudly as he could with his tiny voice. Then, with another zap from Twilight’s horn, all the pain hitting his eardrums disappeared almost instantaneously, giving the stallion a moment of reprieve to catch his breath. When he signed up to be a friendship ambassador, the last thing he expected was to go through all this torture right off the bat, but hopefully once he met this hornet queen, this would all turn out to be worth it.
“How’s that? Do you feel better now?”
“Yeah,” Orange replied, massaging his ringing ears. “I think I’m ready to get this over with now, if that’s OK.”
Twilight then turned her attention towards Fluttershy, who happily nodded before hovering her way over to the beehive hanging from the nearest tree. “Oh, Beeanca~! We’re ready for you now!”
The stallion held his breath, waiting patiently for what seemed like minutes, even though it must have only been a few brief moments. Just as vague notions that bee time might be different from pony time prodded at the edges of his thoughts, however, he saw a speck leaving the entrance of the beehive above him. His eyes were too small to see the microscopic organism from how far away he was, but suddenly, he could feel himself floating into the air, kicking his legs wildly as his body rapidly levitated upwards towards the beehive.
Finally, once he stopped looking at the ground that had been pulled away from him so abruptly, he lifted his head to make eye contact with the most beautiful creature he’d ever seen. She had black irises, long antennae, and enchanting translucent wings that seemed to sparkle from the sunlight as she fluttered in the air, but most importantly was the way she smiled at him, making his heart nearly freeze while his face began to steam. This was the representative he was to meet, the one responsible for the majority of honey production in Equestria, and he suddenly regretted not dressing up for the occasion.
“Orange,” Twilight began, motioning towards the hornet, “this is Queen Beeanca.”
“Oh, please,” she responded, flashing a toothy grin. “I’m no queen yet. I’m only eighteen days old, after all! I’m Princess Beeanca. It’s nice to meet you.”
The bee princess curtsied, but all Orange could do was stare, slack-jawed and wide-eyed once he finally realized that he was floating in front of actual royalty. He shook his head. Now that he was the friendship ambassador for all of ponykind, it was his mission to ensure positive relations between Equestria and the hornet colonies. All the honey in the world depended on it!
“N-nice to meet you!” he blurted out, bowing his head humbly. His hooves were trembling in midair, and to make matters even more awkward, the princess was starting to giggle at him. Could this have possibly been any more embarrassing?
“Well, now that formalities are out of the way, why don’t I introduce you to the hive?” Orange lifted his head, looking around at the three girls who all seemed to nod in agreement. This was it. Time to do his job, and if he was lucky, it wouldn’t be long until he was swimming in beautiful, sticky, nonsexual fluids. Finally, Beeanca fluttered her way back to the entrance, and with the magical aura around his body leading him along, he promptly followed behind her, getting probably the first view of a beehive’s interior ever seen by ponykind.
Amazing, however, didn’t even begin to describe the splendor before him. It was unlike anything he’d ever imagined! Normally, when he thought of bees, he thought of small, pudgy bugs that were basically brainless dots sitting on flowers. Now that he was their size, though, they were suddenly all beautiful, bipedal babes with big, b-cup boobs. And there were billions of them!
“Whoa…”
The princess snickered, clapping her hands to get the attention of the girls around her. “Alright, everybuzzy! Gather ‘round! We’ve got a visitor!”
Suddenly, the giant conveyor belt of waifus stopped altogether, gasping femininely upon turning their heads towards the equine newcomer. Orange took a step back as his cheeks flushed red, but almost immediately, a throng of hornets swarmed around him, giggling loudly and trying to speak over one another.
“Are you a pony?”
“How’d you get so small?”
“What are you doing here?”
“Do you like honey?”
“How big is your di--”
“Alright! Alright! Give him some space, ladies!” Princess Beeanca quickly intervened, holding out her hands before the bee girls accidentally backed him out of the hive altogether. “This is the new ambassador of friendship that Fluttershy was telling me about earlier. He’s here to establish positive relations between ponykind and all the hives in Equestria, so I want you all on your best beehavior, OK?”
“Yes, ma’am!” they all replied in unison with a salute.
“Good. You’re dismissed. Back to work!”
With a nod, all the hornets returned to their individual jobs, picking up right where they left off and once again filling the hive with a productive buzz that left him floored. Then, once it was just the two of them, Beeanca turned to her guest and motioned for him to follow.
“Come on. I’ll introduce you to some of our VIB’s.”
“...OK, this is getting a little weird.”
Just as the princess took one step forward, she quickly halted, turning around with a suspicious eyebrow raised. “What do you mean?”
“I dunno. It just feels like everything you’ve said so far has been a bee pun. In fact, I’m pretty sure you’re doing it intentionally at this point.”
Beeanca put her hands to her hips. “Well, what did you expect? We’re not ponies, after all.”
“Yeah, but… it just feels a little forced. Like, I think you might be trying a little too hard. Just saying.”
Suddenly, the princess was leaning forward, flittering her wings angrily as her eyebrows furrowed. “Oh, like your culture is any better? ‘Hey, everypony! We just discovered new land! What should we call it?’ ‘Guhhhh how about Fillydelphia? Hurr durr.’”
Orange rolled his eyes. Of course, he could go on arguing forever, but even his pride wouldn’t keep him from the main focus of the mission: honey.
“Sorry,” he mumbled. “Anyway, I’d love to meet more of your friends.”
Finally, the princess’s glare softened into a triumphant smile as she once again raised her shoulders with confidence. “Glad to hear it. This way!”
As Beeanca guided the stallion deeper into the hive, he had more and more time to look at all the production happening around him. Finally, he could be in a place with other organisms like him whose entire life revolved around honey, but he couldn’t help a certain thought that was floating around in his mind. Before he could think about it any further, however, the princess led him to another member of the colony, wearing a black and yellow jacket and violently shaking a billow of pollen off of her body.
“There you are,” Beeanca said, motioning towards the worker bee. “Next, I’d like to introduce you to Yellow Jackie. She’s our leading nectar collector.”
“Hey, there!” Orange replied, trying to sound as enthusiastic as possible. “It’s nice to meet… you…” Just as the stallion began to speak, however, the hornet started dancing out of nowhere, waggling her abdomen and turning in circles. The two of them continued to stare as the worker bee spun elegantly, but as the princess put her hands to her mouth in shock, Orange suddenly broke out into a fit of laughter. “Hahahaha! What--haha--is with that dance?”
Then, once Yellow Jackie had finished dancing, the two of them looked incredulously back at the stallion with horrified expressions. “That was a status report,” Beeanca said sadly. “We just had over one hundred bees stomped to death by yaks.”
“Oh… Uh… Damn yaks, am I right? Heheh.”
The two continued to stare awkwardly until Yellow Jackie finally laughed it off. “Who’s your friend, Princess?”
“This is Orange. He’s here to establish friendly relationships beetween ponies and the hornets.”
“Orange, eh? That’s a pony name if I ever heard one.”
The earth pony scoffed. “Oh, that’s rich. Coming from someone named ‘Yellow Jackie’.”
“Alright already!” Beeanca snapped. “I get it! We’ve all got bee-related names! Maybe it’s because we’re--I dunno--f[bzz]king bees?”
Just as tensions began to heat up, however, another group of bees flew into the hive, all wearing the same outfit and covered from head to toe in pollen. More importantly, though, just like the other two, they were all beautiful women, further confusing Orange about what he thought he knew of bee culture.
“Hey, Princess!” one of them exclaimed, rushing up to Beeanca. “I’m guessing Yellow Jackie has already told you about--Oooooo!! Who’s your friend?”
At this point, the princess began to grimace, switching looks between Orange and the worker bees. “Er… This is a representative of Equestria. We’re trying to establish positive relations. Orange, I’d like to introduce you to Antennifer, Pollenanna and Hornetasha.”
The three waifus waved their fingers seductively towards the earth pony, causing him to finally turn towards Beeanca with an eyebrow raised. “Hey, question…”
“Yeah?”
“So, I’m seeing a lot of girls here. Are there any males in this hive?” The princess and worker bees then all turned towards each other, mirroring the same blank stare, but once the initial pause was over, they all quickly bent over, wrapping their arms around their thorax as they laughed hysterically. “What? What happened?”
“I’m sorry,” Beeanca said, wiping a tear from her eye, “but you really think that we’d allow men to do a woman’s job?”
Antennifer chuckled again. “The only thing boys are good for is…” Then, without finishing her sentence, she put her arms out in front of her and bounced her pelvis forward, making grunting sounds with each thrust.
“Speaking of which,” Hornetasha said with a sly grin forming on her lips. “When are you gonna…”
Orange didn’t hear what came next, seeing as how she held her hand over her lips as she whispered into Beeanca’s antennae, but once the princess heard, she immediately gasped, covering her mouth with her hands before pushing her friend playfully. “Hornetasha! Not in front of Orange!”
“What?” the stallion asked. “What happened?”
“Oh, it’s nothing,” Beeanca replied. “It’s just, since our last queen passed away a little sooner than expected, it kinda pushed me into the role of queen beefore I was ready. Now I’m basically supposed to fulfill all the respective duties, which also includes… er… finding a husband.”
“Yeah, but apparently none of the drones are good enough for her,” Yellow Jackie chided. “If she doesn’t find a suitor, this hive might not be around for a second generation.”
The princess immediately looked away with a blush, twiddling her thumbs bashfully while a sudden awkward silence filled the air around them. Orange waited patiently for a punchline, but when it never came, he finally understood how serious this issue really was. We were talking about honey here! If this was really the busiest hive in all of Equestria, what did that mean for the future of honey production if she couldn’t find a mate? This may have been a friendship mission, but if it meant saving this hive, Orange would do whatever it took to make sure that it survived for as long as possible.
“Princess!” the stallion exclaimed, grabbing Beeanca by the hands, making her reflexively gasp. “I promise I’ll help your hive in any way you need! If you need a suitor, I’ll do anything I can to make sure you can fulfill your job as queen of this hive!”
The princess blushed, standing frozen while her jaw tried to put together coherent sounds. Orange still wasn’t sure if he had said something offensive again, but he needed to make sure that she knew how serious he was about relations with the hornet colonies. And honey.
The worker bees around her, though, began chuckling and wiggling their eyebrows. “Ooooooo!”
“SHUT THE F[bzz]K UP!”
“So, uhh…” Suddenly, upon hearing the stallion speak, Beeanca quickly recomposed herself and turned towards the pony representative, wearing a smile that contrasted to her demeanor from two seconds ago. “I don’t mean to rush. I know you’re a busy bee and all, but uh… Where do you keep the honey?”
Beeanca tilted her head to the side, somewhat caught off guard by the unusual question. Once she looked back at her worker bees for input, however, they all made what Orange could only interpret as crude bee gestures, not that he would know for sure either way, though. He definitely wasn’t about to make any more hasty assumptions after the whole yak thing.
“That’s actually our next stop!” she said, trying to act confident aside from the pink shade of her cheeks. “Come on. I’ll show you.”
Orange couldn’t put a hoof on the exact reason, but Beeanca was acting strange somehow, even for a bee. Still, though, he followed behind her as she began to lead him away from the worker bees, all of whom were whooping wildly.
The entire time the two of them walked, neither one said a word to each other, mostly because Orange was trying to keep himself from saying anything awkward again. Beeanca, though, had no real reason to feel self-conscious about anything. Was she angry at him for some reason? Actually, now that he thought about it, there were a plethora of reasons for her to be mad at him already, creating a sudden lump in the stallion’s throat. Had he jeopardized diplomatic relations with ponies already? Was Equestria suddenly going to have to go without honey all because of his big, stupid mouth?
No. He had to save this mission while he still could.
Finally, the two of them arrived at a room in the back of the hive, the only room he could see that actually had a door in contrast to the hexagon-shaped bedrooms of the worker bees. “Well,” Beeanca began, grabbing hold of the doorknob, “here we are!”
Orange gulped. This was it, the honeycomb hideout. He had to rein in his expectations, mentally preparing himself for what could possibly end up being the most alluring, mouth-watering image he’d ever seen. Then, once the door opened and the stallion made his way into the room, his jaw dropped…
...but not for the reason he was expecting.
*Slam! Click!*
Orange quickly turned around. “Uhh… Beeanca?”
This wasn’t what he expected at all! He was so sure that this room would be the storage room for the liters and gallons of honey that bees produced every single day, but rather than vast pools of liquid nectar, everything around him was… empty. He was literally brought to a room with nothing in it save for a couple mops and a garbage can. As he looked incredulously into the hornet’s black irises, however, all he saw was the sinister smile of a girl turning the door’s lock and casually walking towards him.
“Beeanca? W-where’s the honey?”
The princess giggled, squatting down and lifting up the stallion’s chin with her finger. “You didn’t really come up here to establish friendly relations with the hornets, did you, Orange?”
Shoot! How did she know?! If word of this got back to Princess Twilight, there was no telling what kind of consequences he’d have to deal with when he came back home! He’d heard horror stories of prison in Equestria. They didn’t have any honey for the ponies who went there! He couldn’t lose his composure this quickly, though.
