A quiet day in the Crystal Kingdom was about all that Shining Armor could ask for and having finally found one he intended on relaxing in a private room waiting for his lovely wife to arrive and join him for some tea and donuts. Sitting there all by his lonesome though was not very fun and the tea hadn’t arrived yet so he couldn’t really do much. It was at least ten minutes before Cadance finally arrived and when she did his heart soared like it did every time he saw her.
She gave him that look that said, ‘we have some free time and nopony to interrupt us.’
That was a look he very much enjoyed. As she came to his side and sat down he found her leaning over and kissing his cheek. “Looks like somepony’s been waiting.”
Shining Armor laughed. “Nah, just relaxing on our day off.”
“Relaxing is nice, but I can think of a few more interesting activities we can do.”
Their eyes met and Shining felt his heart racing. In a private room, with a beautiful wife, and on their day off, yeah they could probably find a few more interesting things than relaxing to do. In fact he was about to suggest something when there came a knock at the door. Due to the number of accidental interruptions in the past it became common courtesy and law to knock on every closed door before entering. Less a pony find their respective rulers up to various athletically challenging positions.
The door opened and the servant came in. A crystal pony wearing a maid uniform. On her back she held a plate with two cups of tea and a box of donuts. They looked precariously balanced but somehow the servants were masters of balancing acts… actually Cadance was also a master of such things but in different ways.
The maid set the plate down and bowed. She retreated silently and left the room. Well they could at least enjoy a nice cup of tea before getting up to any marital business he figured.
As he lifted the cup of tea to his lips Cadance’s horn lit up and a pink aura stopped the cup from moving any further. Instead slowly setting it down. She looked at it with narrowed eyes. “Now who in their right mind would try this with a princess of love around?”
Shining felt lost. “Um… what?”
She shook her head. “You don’t see it do you? Someone slipped a love potion into your cup of tea. Honestly, of all the dirty pranks that could be pulled on our day off this is probably the least successful and most insulting.”
Shining swallowed. “O-oh… but wait, those only make you fall in love with the pony you first see after drinking it right? That would be you.”
Cadance nodded. “Yes, and when they are successful the affected ponies eyes light up pink and I can even see their heart strings surge forth toward the new crush. Of course it is completely ineffective if the pony already has romantic feelings for the first pony they see so hence, the least successful since you already love me.”
Shining laughed. “Well at least we caught it before it did any harm.”
Cadance set the cup further away from them onto the other side of the table. “None of the rest of the food or drink is tampered with, so let’s share this one.” She took a sip of her cup of tea before levitating it over to Shining’s lips. He took a drink, mildly spicy and very sweet with a hint of orange. Yes, this was good tea.
Shining smiled. “Maybe they were trying to help us get a little more in the mood.”
Cadance rolled her eyes. “And why would someone do that?”
“Do you think the people want us to have more babies?”
Cadance’s eyes opened wide. “Unless you’re the one going through a year of pregnancy and giving birth this time, the answer is no.”
Shining laughed. “I was joking. I think we’re okay with just one Flurry. Though… a boy might be nice.”
Cadance lifted a hoof and brushed his cheek. “Later, we have all the time in the world for making babies, love.”
The door opened and they both looked over at once. The knocking rule was broken. Of course seeing Twilight Sparkle standing here was perfectly fine. Cadance lowered her hoof and stood up. “Twilight, how are you doing?”
Twilight walked in. “I’m doing great, just here for some research about crystal ponies. Also to read. I have a goal to read every single book in the Crystal Kingdom’s library before the year is up.”
Shining Armor coughed. “But that’s hundreds of thousands of books!”
Twilight smiled. “Yep, and I’m one quarter of the way through. Took me four months so I think if I schedule my reading time I might just succeed.” Twilight walked over and took a seat in front of the table. “So how are you two doing?”
Cadance went over to the door that Twilight had left open and began closing it with her hoof. “We’re doing wonderful, it’s our day off so we’re just trying to enjoy ourselves.”
Shining added, “and each other.”
Cadance made a sour expression. “Shining, not in front of Twilight. She’s still innocent.”
Twilight wasn’t looking at Cadance as she spoke. “I actually had a question for you, Shining.” She glanced down at the cup of tea. “Oh, wait I know this one.” She lifted it up and took a drink of it. A big drink. “Orange, Spice, and honey? I love the tea here.”
Shining watched with patience as Twilight finished the tea before setting it down and saying, “Oh no, was that yours? I uh… I’m a bit thirsty.”
Shining Armor waived a hoof. “It’s fine, I was sharing this one with Cadance over here anyway. That one was-“ he froze. That one had a love potion in it.
Cadance seemed to draw the same conclusion as she looked at Shining with a raised eyebrow. “Um… Twilight, do you feel okay?”
Twilight shrugged. “Same as usual. Oh right, the question, can I sneak into the dark library for a quick peek at some old texts? I think there’s a secret entrance in the library.”
Shining Armor let out a sigh. “Well… it’s uh, yeah sure, knock yourself out, Twily.”
“Thank you, Shiney, I’ll see you both later if I get the time.” With that said, Twilight’s horn lit up and she teleported out of the room.
Shining armor looked at Cadance. “You know, that love potion didn’t affect her at all and she was looking at me the whole time.”
Cadance swallowed. “Yep… should we just-“
“Ignore that fact with every fiber of our being, yes.”
“I was going to say invite her for tea in our room.”
Shining looked over at her with panic racing in his heart. Cadance laughed. “I was kidding, like I said she is far too innocent for something like that. We’ll just happily ignore it… for now.”
It was his day off, but now he was not even remotely in the mood for any extra activity with his wife. Instead he wanted to find the nearest barrel of cider and stick his head in. At least this day couldn’t get any worse. Except…
Shining asked, “Who put the love potion in there?”
Cadance giggled. “Who me? Couldn’t be.”
He shot her a glare. “Seriously?”
“I thought it would be funny, and oh boy was I correct in the most surprising of ways.”
Correction, the day just got worse.
