A Battlefield of Love and Music
Sugarcoat walked around the ample garden of her house overseeing that everything was going smoothly. Overall, the ambient of the party was precisely how she liked it: vivid, entertaining, and cordial. The party itself was a small affair she wanted to throw to celebrate their graduation. After the eventful Friendship Games the two schools, Crystal Prep and Canterlot High, had gone through, they came out with their feuds forgotten given everything that had happened.
Nearly tearing the veil between two dimensions and unleashing a magical apocalypse across her world and heavens know what onto Equestria (or magical pony land as she liked to call it) was a very good reason to put any old grudges to rest. Approaching Sunny Flare, she hugged the girl from behind.
“Enjoying the party?” She asked after startling the girl, nearly making her spit out her beverage.
Sunny coughed. “Y-Yes! You surely didn’t get stingy with costs, huh?” She half-asked, half-praised as she looked around seeing a few classmates and Canterlot High Students chatting, playing, and generally enjoying themselves as they mingled. “Say, how much did it cost you, anyway? I know your dad is, like, stinking rich but surely all this did a number on his wallet.”
“Eh, not much. All I had to do was ask. He’s never said no to anything I ask of him before as long as I behave,” Sugarcoat replied. “Besides, this is a double party for me!”
“Double party?” Sunny asked, confused.
Sugarcoat nodded. “Yup. For our graduation and cuz that cunt of Abacus Finch finally got what she deserved.”
“Shit, they got her?” Sunny asked, surprised.
“It’s all very hush-hush still, but yeah. She was trying to cross the border when they got her. Fuck, I kinda wished she’d end up in a whorehouse or on the streets sucking cocks on public restrooms after everything she did to us and Twilight.”
Sunny raised her glass. “Cheers to that. Now, you ready for the next party?”
“You know I am! Can’t believe Lemon got permission from her parents! A mansion all to ourselves. We’ll be able to drink and fuck and drink and do whatever we want for an entire week!”
“And fuck!” Sunny giggled causing her friend to join her. “Won’t take more of your time. I’ll go search for Sunset or the other girls once I’m done taking a few shots,” she motioned her glass. “Too bad drinks ain’t spiked.”
“You know how my dad is. Just enough to get us to enjoy some alcohol but never to get us tipsy. I’m surprised he allowed that much given there’s boys around. Buuut since I’m making sure no-one tries to put weird stuff in the drinks, I guess that’s fair. Cya, Sunny!” She waved a hand leaving her friend behind. If there was one downside to her party, apart from the lack of alcohol, it was that she was short one friend to make her party complete. But Sour Sweet was out of town and there was nothing to be done about it. Trixie and Rarity were also absent. They had come and left early, the former had a magic show to attend to and had come to steal a few free snacks a bottle or two of cider, whilst the latter had to leave due to a family trip that she wouldn’t miss.
But even with those blemishes, she was enjoying herself simply by seeing her friends and classmates interact. Pointdexter and Sandalwood were having a match of table tennis with Trender and Neon, Polimmere was chatting with Photo Finish, even the usually reclusive Fluttershy and Wallflower Blush were exchanging ideas and stories with Orange Shape and Fauna Touch. All in all, a perfect party everything considered.
As she walked around the place she spotted a lonesome figure. She decided to approach and sit beside her. “Heeeeey there, sexy, what’s a young, succulent, ready-to-fuck thing like you sitting all alone?”
“Waiting for a fucking comedian to come and ruin my snacking time, apparently,” Lemon replied and both girls shared a laugh. Popping a fried shrimp with crackers and sauce over it into her mouth, she continued. “Everything alright, Sugartits?”
“Shhh!” Sugarcoat hushed her, looking around nervously. “Not here, remember? Not everyone is into a circle of girls casually fucking each other’s brains out, you know? Save the nicknames for later.”
“Nah, babe, just wanting to mess with the party girl a little. You didn’t my question, though,” Lemon replied, a shit-eating grin spread across her lips.
“I’d tell you to go fuck yourself but you’d probably do it, you skank,” they shared a short chuckle before continuing. “Where’s your girl? It’s a damn rarity to see any of you apart at all.”
“Ladies room,” replied Lemon before eating another shrimp. “Freaking delicious, I gotta get the recipe for these, mmhhhmm~” she moaned as she munched. “She’s also gonna brink back a few drinks after she’s done. Too bad we can’t get plastered.”
“And risk a wild Fluttershy!? No thank you. I wouldn’t want to be at her mercy unless I’m nearly tripping over myself, too,” she shuddered. “Got a few words with Sunny a few minutes ago. Everything set for our trip?”
Lemon nodded. “Yup! Everything’s in order and will be once my parents hire a gardener to trim the bushes and all’s done. I still need the confirmation of a few of the girls, but we can count AJ and Pinkie out. They’re gonna follow the bitchlings on their tour.”
“Damn,” Sugarcoat sighed. “Well, as long as they enjoy it everything’s okay.” She reached for a snack and was about to it when she saw her friend freeze and drop the one she’d picked. Looking at her face, she found Lemon’s expression slowly morph from surprise, to disbelief, to disgust, and finally to scorn in less than two seconds. “Lemon, what’s wrong?”
“What’s that bitch doing here?” Lemon muttered, barely loud enough for Sugarcoat to hear her.
The party host was taken aback. It was the first time she’d heard Lemon use the word bitch with such anger and vitriol packed behind her usually playful and friendly voice. Looking at what she was trying to fulminate with her gaze, she found a girl chatting with a couple of Canterlot and Crystal guests. She didn’t know the girl personally, but she knew who she was due to her talent. “Octavia Melody? You have a beef to pick up with her or something?”
“More like she has one with me. And trust me, after the shit she’s tried to pull, the feeling is mutual,” Lemon replied. “She’s Vinyl’s… Was Vinyl’s roommate. They were good friends since they met and because they both moved into the city from far away, they shared one of the dorms Canterlot High sponsors.”
“I’m sensing a big old but in that story there. Why does she hate you then? Did you snub her during a competition?” Sugarcoat asked.
“Something like that,” Lemon chuckled darkly. “The competition was love and the battlefield was Vinyl’s heart. I won without even trying.”
“Get out of here,” Sugarcoat replied, out of words. “She has the hots for Vinyl? I mean, I can see why, but she’s salty because Vinyl chose you?”
“It’s… complicated,” Lemon let out a sigh, her eyes never leaving the figure of her hated foe.
“So I guess inviting her to any of our private parties is a no go, right?” Sugarcoat prodded playfully.
“Invite her and I swear I’ll pull on your ponytails so hard your scalp will bleed,” Lemon replied without an ounce of patience.
“Kidding. I was just kidding. Man, girl, what the fuck has she done to make you think that way? You’re the nicest and sweetest among us, I mean, that’s not much of a compliment, but at least it’s something,” said the glasses-wearing girl as she protected her precious ponytails.
“Oh, I don’t know, maybe every fucked up shit she’s done ever since we met? I tried, Gods above know I tried to befriend her. The first time we got to be alone she called a stuck up bitch that had stolen the love of her life away from her! Like, what the fuck? And later when I told Vinyl about it, she didn’t believe me!”
“Hold up, you got into a fight?”
“Fuck no!” Exclaimed Lemon Zest. “And do precisely what that holier than thou slut wanted? Nah, I swallowed my pride and played along. Vinyl is too damn nice for her own good and I love her for it. I took in every insult, every petty action like trying to make me trip over or suggest to my girl I was cheating on her with my Ex, every single little thing she tried to do to disrupt us and stood my fucking ground, not giving an inch.”
“And you… didn’t slap her teeth out?” Sugarcoat asked, surprised at her friend’s level of self-control just to spite the cello-playing girl.
“We’ve come face to face many times. Twice we nearly exchanged fists, but Vinyl saved her sorry ass before that happened. After the second time, Vinyl believed me about Octavia because she’d been insisting that I was bad for her and all that crap. She had the nards to confess to her outside my fucking door, for fucks sake!” She said, practically snarling the last words. “But my girl shut her down gently, despite everything that’s happened she still considers that black-haired crone her friend.”
“Want me to ditch her out of the party?” Sugarcoat asked, now sharing some of the anger her friend was experiencing. All was fair in war and love, right? But that trying to swoop someone else’s significant other from their feet like that wasn’t cool unless it was a rescue from a toxic relationship.
“No. Let her stay. This will likely the last time any of us will have to constantly deal with her. If she tries anything stupid, I’ll stop her. Don’t worry, I won’t start a fight… I promised Vinyl I would never, ever throw the first punch against her friend.” Lemon confessed solemnly.
“And if she throws it?” Sugarcoat asked, her worry about having to contain a potential fight on her otherwise perfect, tranquil party somewhat diminished by the love her friend showed for her girlfriend. More so because she knew Lemon was not the kind of girl to let shit like that slide and to enter guns blazing against her problems.
“...I’ll do my best to keep my cool… no promises if that happens. We cool?”
“We cool,” she stood up and patted Lemon’s shoulder a few times. “Gotta check somewhere else, ‘kay?”
“Sure. I’ll even stay right here to avoid crossing that bitch,” she said a moment before Octavia turned in her direction, her smile fading instantly as she turned around again with her head held high. “Riiiight here. Yup. Not gonna move a fucking inch.”
Reassured by her friend, Sugarcoat returned to her business and moved to greet Sunset and Twilight. Alone, Lemon tried to enjoy the delicious shrimps but seeing Octavia had soured her mood to the point of finding them stale to her mouth. Letting out a defeated groan, she decided to wait for her girlfriend’s return.
While she waited, two figures approached her and one tapped her gently on her shoulder. Looking back, she found Fluttershy with a girl she’d only seen in passing. “Ah, Fluttershy. Who’s your friend?”
“Blush. Wallflower Blush,” she giggled.
It was then that Lemon noticed the red cheeks of the green-skinned girl and the funny smell coming off from both of them. “Seriously, Fluttershy? Joints?”
Fluttershy blushed. “I blame Tree Hugger for getting me into weed. But I only smoke a little and only what I’ve grown myself,” she presented a joint. “Want a try? My friend Wallflower really likes it.”
Lemon examined the slightly stoned girl and chuckled. “Hard pass. Don’t want to end up like that.”
“It’s pretty weak but packs a lot of flavor and calms your nerves. I grew it myself with the seeds she harvested. She’s a lightweight and can’t hold her own,” she giggled while Wallflower agreed, nodding her head.
“Damn, in that case, let me hit that up. I need something to avoid grinding my teeth down for the moment,” taking the offered lit joint, she turned their way and took a good chunk of it before handing it back. “Fruity,” she said exhaling the smoke. “Wow, it really works. I feel better already. Thanks, girls.”
Fluttershy and Wallflower nodded and moved away, offering their homegrown joints to anyone willing to try them. Turning back to watch Octavia, she found the girl was gone. “...come on, how’s that fair? I turned for, like, five seconds tops!” She groaned before stealthily leaving her seat; her promise to not move forgotten as the ‘predator’ was on the prowl, no doubt searching for white-skinned, blue-haired prey. “Sorry, Sugartits,” she muttered before slipping away, moving quickly in search of the cellist.
As she moved through the small groupings, always doing her best to not make it obvious she was heading to the bathroom where her beloved was, she kept an eye open in case she caught a glimpse of Octavia. She moved to the outside garden, the shortest route to the bathroom without making it obvious. Any other day and in other circumstances, she’d give not the tiniest flying fuck about causing a scene, but right now she was a guest and she really didn’t want to embarrass her girlfriend.
All she wanted to do was reach Vinyl, tell her about Octavia, and try to convince her to simply leave or stick together for the rest of the party if she wanted to stay. So focused she was on her plan that she nearly tripped over as someone gently collided against her back.
“Sorry! Didn’t see you there,” she apologized, ready to move on.
“Yeah, no surprise there, Zest. Then again, you tend to be quite blind to what’s around you,” an elegant, almost dignified voice said.
Lemon stopped immediately and turned to face the owner of that voice at the speed of light. “Octavia,” she muttered, giving her a forced smile capable of bending titanium. “Fancy meeting you here. I didn’t know you were here, how are you doing?”
“Spare me your falsehoods, Zest. If I wanted to hear lies I’d listen to politicians,” crossing her arms, their gazes never breaking off, she pressed on taking an upright, firm stance before the green-haired girl. “Where’s my Vinyl?”
Lemon clenched a fist and could feel a vein in her forehead engorge. “‘Your’ Vinyl. Wow. Last time I checked Vinyl was a human being, not a thing you could call ownership over, Tavi~”
“You know damn well what I meant by that, Zest,” Octavia replied, squinting her eyes and pursing a lip. “And who gave you the right to call me that? Only my Vinyl can call me that,” seeing the smile on Lemon’s face nearly break, she smiled and took a step forward. “Then again, you wouldn’t understand the meaning behind it. It’s something deep and special between the two of us. Something unbreakable, dare I say. It is something you could never comprehend, Zest. I’ll ask you again,” she now stood in front of her hated foe, slightly looking up at the girl a couple of inches taller than her. “Where. Is. MY. Vinny~?”
Lemon saw red for a moment but was able to contain herself before doing what she'd regret doing later (although she’d thoroughly enjoy it at that moment). Being nearly eye to eye, with her being only a couple of inches taller than Octavia, she didn’t have to lean down, but she still did a slow but exaggerated lean to indicate her smaller stature. “Listen, Octavia, whatever you and Vinyl share and have, that deep bond of friendship you share? I get it. I respect it. But that’s the thing. It’s a bond of friendship without romantic meaning to her. Even after all the crap you’ve tried to pull against me, against us, she still considers you her close friend.”
Pressing her face further until they were mere inches apart, she continued. “So for all of our sakes. Get the fuck over it. We never fought for her. I never stole her from you. There was no battle, no scheming, no backstabbing. Vinyl chose me, not you, and you have to live up with it.”
“You think I’m going to believe that?” Octavia rebuked, her voice laced with the thickest of poisons. “That you simply met up at the Friendship Games, decided to hang out for a few months, and suddenly you’re in love? No. I don’t buy it. My intelligence will not be insulted by such a foolish ploy. You did something to her to reject me, didn’t you? You fucking Crystal Prep hooligans, always scheming, always backstabbing, always trying to ruin people’s lives. Everything was perfect before you showed your slime, slut-face, and enchanted my beloved Vinny away from me!”
“She. Never. Loved you!” She said quietly but firmly. “She never suspected you had those sort of feelings for her! She never saw you in a romantic way! You’re her best friend, Octavia. That’s what you are to her, not her lover. Never her lover. And NEVER more than her friend. Why the fuck can’t you understand that!?” She snarled. “I didn’t have to do anything! From the very first moment we met, I tried to be nothing but cordial towards you, and you spit in my face! I tried for her, but you wouldn’t budge, wouldn’t see the reality of things.”
Pulling back, she continued. “What do you want me to say? That I used voodoo hoodoo, said alakazam and BAM, Vinyl fell in love with me!? Because if that is what you believe happened, I feel sorry for you. Even if, even IF I could use whatever bullshit magical powers that seem to plague Canterlot High, I would never do something so fucking lowly, Octavia.”
“And yet you stole the love of my life away from me without mercy, you fucking cunt!” Octavia shouted, the music came to a halt, and every head in the vicinity turned their direction. “I love her with all my heart! I’ve loved her since I met her! We’ve been together for years, supporting each other! I was there when she cried because she would never sing! I was there when she nearly broke an arm in a car accident! She was there for me when I botched my first recital! She was there when my mother died! I deserve her love, not you! YOU STOLE HER AWAY FROM ME!” She yelled at the top of her lungs.
“Funny,” Lemon chuckled, the fire in her belly extending all over her body, barely contained. But for Vinyl… for her, she’d be the big woman and do the right thing. “You claim I stole her away from you. But how could I steal something that never belonged to you in the first place?”
Turning to leave before really doing something she’d regret later, Lemon opted to go find her girlfriend instead. So consumed by her focus to not succumb to her rage she never noticed a gray hand reach out to grab her by the wrist. She felt the squeeze around her wrist before a hard pull followed by a shove forced her to turn around.
The last thing Lemon Zest could see in her blurred vision was an enraged Octavia, her face red with anger and glaring death onto her.
*SSSLAAAAPPP!!!*
The echo of the mother of all slaps resonated through the now silent backyard of Sugarcoat. No one gasped. No one said anything. No one breathed. The world itself halted for a split second, deafened by the strike delivered with hatred and vilest, purest, blackest intent from Octavia’s outstretched hand onto Lemon Zest’s cheek.
The only other sound that was heard was the drop of a set of headphones hitting the soft grass and rolling for a few seconds before settling down.
Lemon Zest didn’t cry, she didn’t even feel the hit until her cheek was burning, pulsating with a kind of pain familiar but at the same time utterly alien to her. She incorporated herself to stand straight; firm, resolute, proud, unmoving, and most important of all, pissed as all fuck. The burning pain in her cheek vanished, she ignored the thin line of blood that escaped and drooled down the corner of her mouth, and she couldn’t taste the metallic flavor of her blood in her mouth.
The audience took an unconscious step back, their hearts pounding and agitated for some reason they couldn’t comprehend. Everyone that witnessed it would later swear they saw fire coming from the two, sparks forming violently as their auras clashed. They would also, quite deliberately, forget to mention how they almost pissed themselves in fear when they saw Lemon Zest spit out a wad of reddish saliva to the ground before smiling at Octavia.
“You fucking asked for it,” Lemon whispered, her voice reaching every onlooker at the same time. She didn’t feel pain, for that pathetic little itch coming from her red cheek was nothing compared to the roaring supervolcano erupting inside her. And before Octavia could react, she returned the gesture in kind.
The slap delivered was comparable to the one she’d received. Octavia’s head was forced to turn to her right, yet her eyes never blinked, showed pain, or broke the stalemate held by their clashing gazes. Returning her head facing forward, she spat some of her bloodied spit to the grass below and then returned the slap.

The DJ and the Cellist exchanged hard, hateful, angry slaps over and over again in turns; never flinching, crying, or giving more than a puff of hot air with each strike received. Their cheeks had turned vivid red and drops of blood flowed slowly from their mouths. Suddenly, Octavia pulled back, dodging a slap before spitting at Lemon’s face. The DJ managed to step aside, evading it, but she was too slow to stop Octavia as the girl lunged forward. Grabbing her by the hair and the edge of her shirt, Octavia pulled with all her might.
“YOU BITCH!” The cellist shouted, tearing a gash on Lemon’s clothes while forcing her head back as she pulled on her hair. But even that wasn’t enough to make Lemon cry out in pain. Instead, she felt two hands reaching her: one on her shoulder and the other on the back of her head. The first squeezed her joint, nearly causing her to loosen her grip over the pink-skinned bitch’s hair while the other took a handful of her hair and pulled back.
“TWO CAN PLAY THAT GAME, YAH DAFT CUNT!” Lemon shouted, unable to look at her foe’s eyes but filling her voice with all the anger boiling in her belly.
Finally, the crowd began to react, at first with gasps and then by forming a circle around them, giving them a wide berth for them to fight and to avoid getting mixed in the crossfire. All except the two figures at the center.
“Alright, simmer down yah’ll! Applejack shouted as she ran to the two musicians currently trying to remove the scalp of the other.
“For fucks sakes, what brought this up!?” Rainbow asked, rushing alongside her friend.
Some among the crowd began to voice their disappointment as the two new arrivals tried to end the fight, none more vocal than a certain siren. “BOOO! BOOOOOOOO, I SAY! Let them fight! Let them fight! I wanna see someone get their ass handed to them!” Aria shouted, flipping a finger at Applejack and Rainbow Dash.
Applejack flipped a finger back at Aria. “Shut yer noise hole, love!” She managed to say before grabbing Lemon Zest from behind and squeezing Octavia’s hand, forcing her to release her hair without hurting. “What in the blazes’ gotten in yer heads!?”
“Whoa! Easy! Easy!” Rainbow yelled, imitating Applejack behind Octavia. The two girls managed to pull them apart while they raged, thrashed against them, and drooled angrily.
“LET ME GO! That bitch needs to pay for what she’s done to me and my Vinyl!” Octavia barked.
“She’s not your fucking property, Cuntavia!” Lemon snarled back. Just then, Indigo Zap arrived to stand in between the two. “Indy! What the fuck!? Applejack, let me go! I’m going to break her fucking fingers! Let’s see how she likes playing the cello then!”
“Simmer down, girl! Simmer down! Don’t make me pony up!” Applejack warned and that seemed to do the trick. “Now, calm down, both of you!”
“FINE!” Octavia shouted. “You can let go of me now, Dash. Unlike certain barbarians, I know better than strike an undefended foe… nor am I an impudent bitch.”
“Funny you say that because I saw you throw the first slap!” Sonata yelled from the back.
“AFTER she taunted me!” Octavia glared at the siren, making her yelp and jump behind Pinkie for protection. “Let me go, Rainbow… please, I just want to put this behind me.”
Rainbow Dash gave the other two a look and they nodded. Letting her go, ready to stop her if she lunged at Indigo to reach Lemon again, she stepped back. She was surprised when Octavia merely pulled a handkerchief from one of her pockets to clean the blood away. When she was done, she glared at Lemon and tossed her open bloodied handkerchief at her. She smirked upon seeing the rage on her eyes and knew she understood the gesture. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must freshen up before leaving this party. Sorry for the inconvenience.”
Lemon watched Octavia head to the bathroom while the crowd murmured and slowly began to dissolve, some grateful but most disappointed the fight had ended without any fanfare. After a few steps, however, Octavia stopped and looked down at her side. Following her gaze, she found the reason she’d stopped. “...My headphones…”
“...” Octavia heard her say, glanced at her, then at the headphones, then back at her. Her smile went wide, full of malicious intent.
Indigo was the only one that took notice in time to say anything while Lemon’s eyes went wide and heart stopped for a moment. “OCTAVIA, NO!” She shouted, lunging at the cellist in a vain attempt to stop her. Her scream served to drag everyone’s attention back. But it was too late, she was too slow to stop Octavia and could only watch her raise her right leg and then drive it down, stomping on Lemon’s headphones. The impact tore them into four different pieces that scattered around the grass. Not content with that, Octavia began to stomp over the remains over and over until the headphones were left decidedly broken and beyond the point of any sort of repair.
“Looks like I stepped on some trash. Be a dear and throw it away, will you?” Octavia said, cruelly. “At least I didn’t step on excrement. Same thing in the end.”
Applejack let go of Lemon Zest, the girl nearly dropping to her knees as her eyes, wide as they could be, as she stared at her destroyed headphones. Tears began to swell in her eyes, her lips quivering as she tried to mutter something but no sound came from her mouth.
“You fucking idiot…” Indigo said to Octavia, glaring at her. “Go fuck yourself, Octavia!” She said before storming off, standing next to Sugarcoat who was standing holding her cellphone up, recording everything.
Rainbow and Applejack exchanged glances, nodded, and stepped back. They didn’t know what was going on or why lemon had reacted that way over her headphones, but they didn’t question it. As they moved, the circle had reformed giving the two girls ample room. Suddenly, Lemon gritted her teeth and stared death upon the cellist.
Octavia huffed and spat on the headphones. “Why are you crying over some useless junk? You can always buy another set.”
“RRRRRAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!” Lemon roared, launching straight at Octavia. Her battle cry made almost everyone present recoil in fear, even the sirens took a step back as the cry reminded them of the fearsome amazons. Octavia was affected too, as, by the time she reacted to the incoming danger, it was already too late for her to do anything about it. She tackled the grey-skinned woman with all her might, driving her back and plunging both of them on the grass.
“CUNT! G-Get off of me, you fucking co--!” Octavia was interrupted by a hard slap across her face, followed shortly by a punch to her ribs. “GAAAAH! You bitch!” She cursed before driving her knee up trying to hit Lemon’s crotch. Fortunately for the DJ, she missed her mark but hit hr lower back.
“GRAAAAGGHH!” Lemon cried in a mix of pain and rage. The pain vanished in a moment before Octavia managed to grab her by the hair and pull her to the side. She latched onto Octavia’s hair, pulling at it fiercely with the intention of harming her as much as she could. They rolled around the ground for a time, trading hard slaps, kicks, knee strikes, punches, and a few headbutts here and there whenever possible. Letting go of their hold, they rolled away from each other with Octavia staggering to her feet and Lemon Zest doing a roll to then jump to hers. Before they could charge again, Bon Bon, Lyra, Sunset, Rainbow, and Applejack intervened, the last two convinced by their friend to join her intercepted them.
